Free rear car seat belt installation

Owners of locally-made cars not already fitted with rear seat belts will get them installed for free.

This is being worked out with the manufacturers, banks and insurance companies and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) is expected to be inked soon said the Transpor Minister.

A source in a major local car manufacturer said the signing ceremony would take place tomorrow. Details on where to get the cars fitted with free rear seat belts would be announced later. The ruling came into force yesterday making it mandatory for rear seat passengers to wear seat belts.However, no summons for the offence will be issued until the end of August. The ruling is only effective for cars registered after January 1995.

Owners of cars without rear seat belts have three years to get them installed. Perodua Kancil and Kenari cars manufactured in 1998 and until mid-2004 will be exempted from the compulsory backseat belt rule. Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said this was because the models produced during this period did not have anchorage points for rear seat belts.

All this will be a waste if there is no enforcement involve and we have yet see any move to make it compulsory on the public transport or commercial vehicles.

Singaporean "STOP RACING RECKLESSLY" on Malaysia roads.

In the wee hours of the morning was how three Singaporean drivers allegedly got their kicks.

Occupants of the Toyota Vios, a man and two women, survived the crash with minor injuries. — NANYANG SIANG PAU

But on Sunday morning, their greed for speed killed one innocent motorcyclist in Johor Baru.

One of the three Singapore-registered cars hit a road divider and the driver lost control of the vehicle.

His car, a red Toyota Vios, flipped over and crashed into the back of a motorcyclist, killing him instantly.

NEAR CHECKPOINT

China Press reported that the incident took place around 2.15am, just 3km from the immigration checkpoint.

The dead man, Mr Li Ming Hui, 29, a Malaysian software engineer, was on his way home from work in Singapore when the incident happened.

At that time, Mr Li had been waiting for the lights to turn green before making a right turn.

It was then that the car suddenly slammed into him from behind.

The collision crushed the motorcyclist.

The car driver and his two female passengers, all in their 20s, survived the accident.

The driver had a broken arm, while one of the women sustained broken bones in her hand.

It appears the story is being repeated worldwide, soaring gas prices move drivers onto two wheels and in turn, motorcycle fatalities increase substantially.

In the case of Malaysia, the increase of a 120,000 extra motorcyclists on the road in the first six months this year is being blamed for an additional 218 motorcyclist deaths during the period of January to June this year, compared to the same time last year.
Every year, some 400,000 new motorcycles are registered.
“Fatal accidents involving motorcyclists have increased for the first six months this year compared to the same period last year even though cases of serious accidents have decreased," said Malaysia’s Road Safety Department Director-General.
“Among the reason why this is happening is because more road users are now using motorcycles due to the increase of petrol. People who traveled by car before are now traveling by motorcycle.”

Toyota-Subaru RWD Coupe Spied

Earlier today we took a look at a rather shot-in-the-dark rendering of the upcoming rear-wheel-drive coupe from Toyota and Subaru. Our friendly neighborhood spy photographers at CarPix must have been tuned in, as they’ve come back this evening with the first-ever real images of the car–at least in prototype form.

The vehicle captured in these photographs is clearly using a Subaru’s Legacy as its base but it looks as if the front and rear clips, wheelbase, and interior have all been modified from stock. There are a pair of Recaro bucket seats that hint at a strongly sporting nature, as well as a strangely visible Toyota emblem in the rear seat area. The heavy white camouflage covering most of the car’s body may obscure much of the coachwork, but it does indicate that there is something worth hiding (re: not just more Legacy) underneath.

We’re told that news of the coupe’s powerplant has also leaked out, with a 2.0-liter boxer four making about 220 horsepower specified. A six-speed gearbox is also said to be part of the package. Perhaps the most exciting part of the new ToyBaru however is in its alleged price, which is said to start just south of $20,000. Consider our interest piqued.

Malaysia Proton ties with Japan Mitsubishi Motors again

MALAYSIA’S national carmaker Proton on Friday announced it has inked an agreement to develop a new vehicle with its former Japanese partner Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

Under the ambitious scheme, Proton, which is in need of advanced technology and auto designs in order to remain competitive, will use Mitsubishi expertise to develop a new model, it said in a statement to the stock exchange.

It said the alliance would also allow the two companies to improve component quality for Proton vehicles, and explore options for exports and contract assembly.

Mitsubishi Motors was a former Proton shareholder and helped the state-controlled firm make its first cars more than two decades ago. It sold its stake in 2004.

For Mitsubishi Motors, Japan’s fourth-biggest carmaker, the deal would provide a springboard to expand its business in Malaysia, Southeast Asia’s biggest passenger car market.

However, their previous talks with Volkswagen and General Motors have collapsed, with the stumbling block reputed to be demands for a stake in Proton. The Mitsubishi deal does not include any ownership changes.

With this move we could see Mitsubishi inspired Proton “Lancer” in future is possible.

AutoUnleashed had me blinded with an article on a blinged out Mercedes Benz SL600. Unveiled at the SEMA Show this year by DUB Magazine, the Benz was decked out with over 200,000 Swarkovski crystals and Bavarian White Mammoth seat covers. The aftermarket modification was done by the custom car accessory company Garson/D.A.D to highlight the company’s Mercedes accessories.

Since the SEMA show was held in Las Vegas from November 4-7, 2007 I guess this much sparkle and shine fits in just perfect. The one must have accessory for anyone even just looking at this car: Sunglasses!

Not only did the crystals cover every square inch of the cars exterior, but were also prominent inside covering parts of the center console, door trim and even the rear view mirror.

Bling Bling.. Yes.. But Bling Bling for the wife… not you!

2009 Mazda RX-8 has arrived stateside, and soon you’ll be able to see one in the vivid sheetmetal flesh, Mazda tells us.

The 2009 version marks the middle of the current sportscar’s life cycle. The exterior’s been touched up a little bit, with new front and rear bumpers and taillights. Bigger exhaust pipes jut out from the rear end, and five-spoke wheels are supposed to remind you of the shape of the RX-8’s hallmark rotary engine blades. The exterior changes mark more structural changes underneath the skin, where the RX-8 gets tower strut bracing and a better rear-suspension geometry. Mazda’s also extending the warranty on the rotary engine to a hybrid-like eight years or 100,000 miles, perhaps to reassure buyers that the offbeat engine will stand the test of time (and feet).

Inside the 2009 Mazda RX-8, a new instrument panel, new seats and a new steering wheel are installed, along with a kitschy tachometer that has a moving redline depending on engine temperature.

Lastly, Mazda’s tuned an R3 sport package for the 2009 RX-8. The special package gets Bilstein shocks, foam stuffing for various crossmembers for extra rigidity, new side sills and a rear spoiler, as well as 19-inch wheels. A 300-watt Bose audio system is standard, as are Bluetooth, Recaro sport seats, a leather parking brake handle and keyless entry and start.

At the 2008 British Motor Show as the Lotus Evora, and Lotus is beaming over its little eaglet. The Evora will be the most grown up and accessible Lotus in the British manufacturer’s lineup.

To illustrate, the automaker claims it will fit two American males in the front seats (did they just call us fat?). It’s a mid-engine, 2+2 coupe (a convertible is planned) with 3.5L V6 sourced from Toyota but elevated by Lotus above its humble origins to produce 276 horsepower. The car weighs just 2,976 lbs., which might be a lot for a Lotus but is well below the average weight of most cars.

The interior is unlike any you’ve seen from this automaker, which is to say that occupying one won’t be like staying in a hostel compared to a four-star hotel. You’ve got leather all around, a nav system, and Lotus promises ingress and egress have been vastly improved over its other models.

The Evora will be built on a new assembly line at the company’s assembly plant in Hethel, England at the rate of 2,000 annually, but has been designed to meet safety and emissions requirements around the world. That many cars for so many markets means the Evora will be exclusive, although we don’t expect Lotus to leave money on the table if there’s big demand for its new, softer, more accessible sports car. Other vehicles will also eventually be built on the Evora’s new aluminum chassis, which is called the Versatile Vehicle Architecture (VVA) and was first seen on the Lotus APX Concept. It can be stretched, widened and carry a vehicle weighing over 4,000 lbs. One new Lotus is enough for now.

A few years back EVO was easily the worlds best ca, really impressed with it then. Now there is a new king, appeared just a concept car designed to show off Lotus race prep capabilities.

It was meant to be their vision of a GT racer using the Exige chassis, but they didn’t seem to have any further plans for it. They ultimately called it the Exige 300R. At the time it looked to me that the car would do the show circuit as a fancy Lotus concept car and that’d be the end of it. A damn shame that would have been if my thoughts were correct. Here are some of the specs:

1580 LBS
Full dry carbon widebody
400hp DTM spec 3.0L V6
Hewland sequential transmission
Motec M8, Ohlins custom suspension, AP brakes, etc.

Now, a high revving 400hp 6cyl and a sequential transmission in a 1580 package–that just sounds like an insane death machine. How insane you ask?

Till now most speedsters know the HKS carbon Evo is the fastest time attack car known to man and nearly sure that no car has ever beat it, anywhere. It has run something like 54 seconds flat at Tsukuba, which is simply untouchable. Then I read this: “The Exige 300RR also garnered quite a stellar competition history. It’s the only car to win the 12hr Merdeka Millennium Endurance race back to back (2005 & 2006). In 2007, it won the HKS Time Attack challenge in Malaysia, against the all conquering HKS CT230. The car even competed in individual FIA GT and Super GT events in 2005, making it the only race vehicle to have competed in both championships. The car was retired from racing in 2008 by it owners, Proton Cars.”

So it turns out that the car ended up getting quite a bit of use after all! And best of all, this one-off Lotus racer is actually for sale. All for a bargain price of only 290,000 Euro (or about $448,000). See for yourself on race-cars.com.

Honda NSX fans needn’t fret, this odd looking cut-and-shut S2000 isn’t previewing any of the rumoured NSX’s replacement’s styling. What it is thought to be though is an early test mule out pounding around the Nurburgring to test driveline and engine components.

Well, we all knew Honda wouldn’t let Nissan and Toyota enter the supercar market without some serious competition. Unlike the previous mid-engined NSX this mule is running a front-mid engine, with its powerplant placed well behind the front wheels to ensure excellent weight distribution. This should also allow the new NSX to offer 2+2 cabin accommodation, broadening its appeal – particularly in the USA. What that engine is remains very much rumours and conjecture. There’s talk of a high-revving naturally aspirated V10, which would fit in very comfortably with Honda’s Type R philosophy.

Chevrolet Aveo 2009 outlook

The new Chevrolet Aveo with 5 doors has been on sale in Europe for a few months now and the 3-door hatchback is ready to join its bigger brother in June. Chevrolet returned to Europe when GM re-branded Daewoo to Chevrolet in 2003 and now, for the first time for a modern Chevy, production has moved to Europe. It is not the first time Chevrolet builds its cars in Poland though, back in 1927 Chevrolet already had a plant in Warsaw, the capital of Poland.

GM’s Warsaw, Poland plant aims to build 60,000 Aveo’s in 2008 and 100,000 in 2009. All these Aveo’s are destined for the European market, or as Wayne Brennon, Executive Director of Chevrolet Europe puts it: “We are proud to build Chevrolet models in the European Union for European customers.”

Eric Stevens, GM Europe Vice President, Manufacturing: “We are using the same recipe here that has lead General Motors to the pinnacle of global success in the past 100 years – to build our products in the markets where they are sold.” This approach has already led to a 8% market share in the Ukraine and Uzbekistan is following in its footsteps where GM hopes to build 250,000 units annually in the mid term.

“But this is just the beginning,” says Wayne Brannon. “In 2006, our production portfolio covered only 28 percent of all vehicle segments. By means of a thorough overhaul and expansion of the product range, we will have increased our market share to 65 percent by 2012 in those areas where we are present.”

BMW GINA concept

BMW has given us a preview of future vehicle construction and design with the unveiling of the new GINA Light Visionary concept car. The car’s new name stands for ‘Geometry and Functions In “N” Adaptions,’ and its design showcases a number of future-oriented production and functionality concepts.

The GINA has an almost seamless outer textile skin that stretches across a movable metal substructure. The car’s front and sides, including the doors, create one single uninterrupted, seamless whole that converges to form a structural unit.

To create this flexible body, the GINA has dispensed with the usual body elements found on production vehicles such as front apron, bonnet, side panels, doors, wheel arches, roof, trunk lid and rear deck. Instead, a new structure with a minimum amount of components has taken their place.

The special fabric is supported by a metal wire structure. At specific points, the high-strength metal is enhanced by carbon struts with a higher flexibility. The design of the frame has also been optimized to support the aspects of crash-safety, stiffness and ride handling, entirely without an outer surface.

The driver can move parts of the substructure by means of electro-hydraulic controls. This will also change the shape of the outer skin, which can thus be adapted to suit the current situation, the driver’s requirements and can also enhance the car’s functional range. The most striking example of this is the headlight design. In normal position, when the headlights are not active they are hidden under the special fabric cover. As soon as the driver turns on the lights, the contour of the front end changes.

BMW has a tradition of revealing its future technologies with eccentric concept vehicles and the new construction methods previewed in the GINA could make it to production one day. However, for now, the GINA is strictly a research model designed to present new ideas.

The Audi A1 supermini will go on sale in March 2010, a secret company document has revealed.

The engineering papers, which were sensationally leaked out of Ingolstadt, detail the Audi A1’s new line-up of four-cylinder launch engines.

The petrol model range begins with an 86bhp, 1.2-litre petrol engine. Further up there’ll be a naturally aspirated 1.4-litre petrol with 122bhp and a high-performance, turbocharged version of the same unit that will yield 170bhp.

New diesel engines include a 1.6-litre common rail injection with 90bhp or a range-topping 2.0-litre common rail unit.

Audi is making no comment about the leaked document, but sources say an internal investigation has been launched.

New System for In-Car Hydrogen Production

A company has developed a system that allows a car to produce its own Hydrogen, which could be used for powering a fuel cell. The system — by way of a device called the Metal-Steam combustor — separates Hydrogen out of heated water using metals like Magnesium and Aluminum.

The basic idea behind the technology is relatively simple: the tip of the metal coil is inserted into the Metal-Steam combustor together with water where it will be heated to very high temperatures. The metal atoms will bond to the Oxygen from the water, creating metal oxide. As a result, the Hydrogen molecules are free, and will be sent into the engine alongside the steam. The solid waste product of the process, in the form of metal oxide, will later be collected in the fuel station and recycled for further use by the metal industry.

Mercedes Fuel Cell car concepts

Mercedes A-Class F-Cell looks like any other Mercedes A-Class yet this really is a car for the next generation. The F-Cell is hydrogen powered meaning no harmful gasses are emitted when driving the vehicle.

The technology that drives this car consists of an electric motor, batteries and two hydrogen tanks. Mercedes have done away with the petrol engine and fuel tank.

Built as if it’s a proper production model this A-Class contains 10 years of development in Hydrogen technology at Mercedes. Mercedes hopes to have hydrogen-powered cars on general sale by 2015. Hydrogen technology still has some way to go with 60mph coming in at over 15 seconds as the electric motor producing only 87bhp.

There has a number of attempts on water-powered cars, but it looks like Japan’s Genepax has now made some real progress on that front, with it recently taking the wraps off its Water Energy System fuel cell prototype.

The key to that system, it seems, is its membrane electrode assembly (or MEA), which contains a material that’s capable of breaking down water into hydrogen and oxygen through a chemical reaction. Not surprisingly, the company isn’t getting much more specific than that, with it only saying that it’s adopted a “well-known process to produce hydrogen from water to the MEA.”

Currently, that system costs on the order of ¥2,000,000 (or about $18,700 — not including the car), but company says that if it can get it into mass production that could be cut to ¥500,000 or less (or just under $5,000).

The car has an energy generator that extracts hydrogen from water that is poured into the car’s tank. The generator then releases electrons that produce electric power to run the car. Genepax, the company that invented the technology, aims to collaborate with Japanese manufacturers to mass produce it.

Oriental-Hyundai Sdn Bhd, the local distributor of Hyundai models, expects its latest Elantra sports edition to capture between 10 and 15 percent market share.

The new variant, introduced by its marketing arm, Kah Bintang Auto Sdn Bhd, features original Incus bodykit parts for the front, rear and side skirtings.

For car performance enthusiasts, an original Incus stainless steel, twin tail-pipe, dual exhaust system tuned to deliver better power and torque are also available.
Wong said the company would also introduce the Accent Corazon 2 sports edition, which would be equipped with the latest bodykit from Corazon — a leading brand in customised automotive parts in the Japanese domestic market and overseas.
Separately, Oriental-Hyundai also announced its collaboration with Lo Gas SRL of Italy to introduce natural gas vehicle (NGV) kits.

“The alliance is to combat the high petrol price for the benefit of our customers. Malaysia is blessed with an abundant natural gas reserves.
“Thus, there is an opportunity to promote and diversify the use of the natural gas not just as a power source in the industrial and utilities sector, but also as an alternative fuel vehicles,” he said.

To-date, about 200 units of NGV (Natural Gas Vehicles) Kits have been installed in Hyundai cars sold by Kah Bintang, resulting in significant savings for the end-users, considering that gas is priced at only RM0.68 per litre vis-à-vis petrol of RM2.70 per litre (prices as of 20 June 2008). Estimates by NGV users state a consumption figure of between 6-8 sen per km for a 1.5 litre car.

Kelantan State on Cheaper fuel

The Kelantan state government says it has received offers for cheaper, imported NGV (natural gas for vehicle) and (LPG) liquefied petroleum gas from overseas companies as part of its move to lighten the burden of the people following the increased fuel prices.However, the overseas producers of the fuel have requested the state government to get the Approval Permit (AP) to import the fuel, the chairman of the state committee for Economic, Finance and Social Planning, Datuk Husam Musa said. — BERNAMA

Petronas

Its other project is Petronas NGV Sdn Bhd, which owns 90 stations with NGV facilities and has plans to increase the number of stations to 200 by 2010. Established in 1992, the NGV is sold at 68 sen per litre and Petronas has forked out RM500 million in subsidies.

Taxi Rates

The situation became worse ever since the government raised the fuel price last month, triggering a free-for-all situation as more and more cabbies decide to do away with the meter and quote their own rates according to their whims and fancies. The argument that NGV (Natural Gas for Vehicles) is cheaper and, therefore, the price increase does not affect them no longer holds water as they claim that it makes no difference at all.

Currently, NGV is offered at 68sen per litre while petrol is at RM2.70 per litre.Taxi drivers claim that before the petrol increase, a full tank of NGV would cost RM8.30 to RM8.50.

“That would take us a distance of 150km to 160km. However, with the recent increase in petrol price, even NGV seems to have gone up in terms of volume,” taxi driver Rahim Kechik said.

Rahim said it now cost him RM10 to RM10.50 to get a full tank of NGV – yet the mileage remained the same.

Petronas Dagangan Bhd had recently clarified in a letter to StarMetro that the NGV price had not been increased.The statement reiterated that Petronas conducted scheduled servicing of its gas processing plant as part of its periodic maintenance exercise.

This has resulted in a richer gas content, based on the reading from their Chromatograph Analyzer. The statement said when gas content was richer, it had more weight and volume and, in turn, provided better mileage.

Interesting note:
According on of the taxi driver , at least 85% of cabbies in KL are not using meters. Cabbies prefer to wait at one designated spot and return to wait again. They charge a higher rate as they usually come back empty to the spot.
