Charity King - Dick Smith

2010-12-21T21:41:00.001-08:00

Australia's Top End of Town gives handsomely to charity, unlike Dick Smith however, they seem to do it privately.

That squeaky little man is at it again - this time he's slamming the wealthy in Australia. "appalling and greedy" In what must be seen as Smith's Annual Publicity Stunt - the man's a walking brand - "People who are worth well over a hundred million dollars - for some reason they don't give anything." BOLLOCKS SMITH!

We are so over you and Trixie trying to pull the wool over our eyes. The fact is that Australia's Top End of Town gives handsomely to charity . . . THEY JUST DO IT PRIVATELY

Mr Smith, it's called philanthropy - this annual stunt you do is called publicity and has nothing what so ever to do with charity. Must who are capable of giving do so in a well thought out, quiet manner. Charity!

Bank bosses seem to have been singled out by Smith, who two weeks ago wrote to the chief executives of the nation's Big Four financial institutions urging them to give away a fifth of their income.

Commonwealth CEO Sir Ralph Norris wrote back, telling Smith that "he gives to charity privately."

Not making a lot of sense, Smith told reporters at Sydney's Wayside Chapel"What's disgusting is there are some incredibly wealthy people around, people who are billionaires"

"People who are worth well over a hundred million dollars - for some reason they don't give anything.

"The press release I sent out mentions how our wealthy are appalling and greedy. And that's pretty right."

Shut the F_ck up Smith, the none response has more to do with a lack of respect for you and yours. Tomorrow there will still be homeless and billionaires - the only thing you have achieved is more publicity for Brand SMITH!

A survey by ANRA and American Express has revealed 40 per cent of people will not make a donation this year, compared to 35 per cent in 2009, not a bad result considering the GFC fallout and ongoing financial strains.

Unfortunately we realise the irony of writing this post - wieghing up a FU vs more publicity for the wee man, clearly we chose FU

Australia: Asylum seekers kept in dark

2010-11-28T14:00:00.000-08:00

Australian Immigration Authorities are not informing asylum-seekers for months of their failed refugee assessments.

The tactic seems to be an intentional tactic to avoid adding to tensions in Australia's overcrowded and increasingly chaotic detention centres. In what has been described as a "systematic" and illegal practice, the Immigration Department has delayed notifying failed asylum-seekers their claims have been rejected, in some cases for almost five months.

News of the practice comes just weeks after the High Court ruled there were serious deficiencies in the way the Immigration Department was processing asylum claims and significantly expanded the role of the courts to increase oversight of refugee assessment decisions. It also comes on the back of a series of protests and suicides in detention centres, caused in part by long delays in resolving people's cases. Last night there were a total of 5746 asylum-seekers in detention, including 2786 on Christmas Island. MORE

From: Organic Producer

Subject: Sale of Macro to Woolies

It’s good news that Macro is not sold off to a major retailer, who may not continue with the vision. Keeping it in the fold with a new direction from an experienced retailer (Tammy) may be the answer Macro needs.

For our family Macro holds very precious sentiments, Macro was where we began our journey into organics.

Michael, it is good that you dare speak up, many just go with the flow - at least shit stirring may get Macro back on track and supporting it’s organic suppliers. Too many opportunists have come on board recently, with nothing but financial self interest, losing the organic mantra in this business is the worst we could do.

Thanks for believing in us when you were there, there was never any bull, always straight down the line, no game playing just wysiwyg, the best gameplan so far as I am concerned, we had real hope at commercialism. I hope Tammy running the show will turn Macro around.

Michael, thanks for giving the organic industry a big toot and a big heart - it needs all the help it can get.

keep up the precious work ....

Newscorp vs Google

2009-12-17T13:45:00.000-08:00

Murdoch vs Google: Newscorp 1 – Google 0

Internet giant Google released new tools that allows publishers more control over the Google Search Engine.

Rupert Murdoch must be having a good old chuckle right about now.

The News Corp. chairman appears to have won a small victory against Google, which it has criticized for giving Internet users free access to the publisher's premium paid content. In the past two days, Google has released new tools that give publishers more control over how people view their online stories through its search engine.

On the 14th December, it launched "First Click," a program that allows publishers to limit users' free access to no more than five paid articles per day.

"Some publishers have asked: Should we put up pay walls or keep our articles in Google News and Google Search? In fact, they can do both--the two aren't mutually exclusive," wrote Josh Cohen, a senior business product manager at Google.

On 15th December, Google released another new feature that allows publishers to opt out of Google News. This latest concession, however, may turn out to be a symbolic gesture to publishers. "It's not likely most users will notice any difference as a result of the change, unless a large number of publishers decide to abandon Google News," says David Coursey of PC World.

Still, others think the move is a significant initial victory for publishers. "By playing hardball, Murdoch appears to have got the Google to blink," says Rory Cellan-Jones of BBC News.

Murdoch has reportedly been in talks with Microsoft over a deal in which the tech company would pay News Corp. to index its news content on the Bing search engine. The media mogul has also threatened to "de-list" News Corp.'s content from Google.

Cellan-Jones summarized the latest Google-Murdoch intrigue this way: "Round One to Murdoch then--but there's a long way to go in this contest."

090403 - Marching Orders

2009-04-08T15:38:00.001-07:00

(AU) With the First Homer Buyers Grant stimulating the biggeebers out of the bottom end of the real estate market, the stock market sputtering out noticeable gains and less notable declines; have we seen a slowing of the recession we almost had?

Far from it, while First Home Buyers have given some real bounce to the real estate sector, they are simply driving up home prices in regions that in 2007-08 witnessed drops of 40% in values. Robert Henry of Statewide Realty, St Marys, in Sydney's outer west (43% price drop) has noted that " taking into account the drop we've seen over the past 3 years, clawing back 30% in value through First Home Buyers is hardly a resurgence"

The concern is that the consumers that can least afford debt at the moment and the initial cause of this current downturn are once again stimulating the economy. We note that Westpac has a Fixed Term Home Loan (10 years) at 4.8%, responsible banking?

It would be easy to flipantly smile this away as more doomsaying, we are Still in the midst of volatile financial times and while it is expected the share market will fluctuate, easing on and of the go button, the housing market is not built for short term gain. Mortgagees commit for an average of 25 years.

President Barack Obama: 'We are in the midst of crisis'

2009-01-20T15:48:00.000-08:00

Can Barack Obama truly change the hearts & minds of Americans, indeed can he affect the outlook of rednecks worldwide?

Michael Courtenay

Anne Davies Washington Correspondent
January 21, 2009 - 5:11AM

Before a vast crowd of two million, President Barack Hussein Obama has been sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America, fulfilling the dream of the civil rights leader Martin Luther King that African Americans would one day be able to aspire to the highest office in the land.

"Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred," Mr Obama said. "Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

"Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America," he said.

"What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

Lite White . . . Australia, the lucky country?

2008-11-24T21:44:00.000-08:00

Has our White Australia Policy simply been watered down, a few decades of dancing around, rewording, policy renaming, a large amount of denial: The fact remains that Australians are essentially mean spirited & xenophobic.

We have the tenacity to label ourselves Diggers, the Spirit to profoundly state our beginnings and the gaul to Rewrite the accepted description of a Refugee. As a nation we rallied behind John Howard after the Tampa Episode, we heaped praise upon our small minded, mean spirited government, bestowing the greatest praise . . . We re elected them.

Is it a myth that we are the lucky country, perhaps when you close the door this hard on humanity it has bugger all to do with luck. We are after all able to sit quite comfortably and state that we are far better off than many in this world (mostly the people we won't let in) Pointing out atrocities in Africa, wars in the Middle East, carnage in Timor. Maybe we really are more civilised but haven't we missed the point . . . ALL of these people are our brother, all of these people deserve our compassion, all of these people are us (not metaphorically, not attempting to introduce buddhism) we are not unique, we are simply human, all of us?

Our Citizenship Test, is an apparent homage to our national identity, or perhaps not, is knowing the name of our Greatest Cricketer really a testament to a mans desire to adopt a country?

Much of the blame is shouldered by our politicians, unfortunately they simply do and have done our bidding.

As a white anglo australian I have been ashamed for far too long at the insensitive, uncompassionate behavior that this country has denied for my entire lifetime (4 decades) The white australia policy was bad enough, compare the small print of the white australia policy and it is not so startling that we haven't really come so far.

Mr Rudd & Co: why haven't the liberal parties immigration policies be humanised by your government?
