Make Punctuation Centers Using Clothespins

This is a fun learning center that could be made practically for free with household materials. If you go to your local hardware store and smile : ) The employees will often give you paint sticks for free. If you have any clothespins in a craft bin (or visit a dollar type of store), you can find clothespins.

This fun center is a great way to get students to practice punctuation.

Using a permanent marker, write a variety of punctuation marks. This is great for differentiation. A comma, period, exclamation point, or question mark should be written on each clothespin.

Types Of Sentences To Include For Your Learning Center:

(The Sentences Should Be Written On Paint Sticks Or Laminated Paper Strips)

Have sentences that are combined with a conjunction but just need a comma next to the conjunction.
Include sentences that only need an end punctuation.
Add sentences that have an introductory phrase that requires a comma after the phrase--there are so many types--- (Since then, As a result, etc.)

Differentiate the type of punctuation task based on a student's writing ability.

Using simple, inexpensive cups helps turn those tricky, abstract math concepts into things students can actually touch and move. 1. The Coordinate Plane Cup Challenge: Graphing Practice Made Easy 🚀

The relationship between an ordered pair and its graph on a coordinate plane can be difficult for some students. This game makes that practice quick and engaging.

Getting the Game Ready:

Grab up to 10 cups. On the outside of one cup, draw a simple graph (like a single point, a line, or maybe even a ray).
On another cup, write the corresponding ordered pair (like (3, -2)) or the matching equation (like $y=2x+1$ ).
The goal is for students to find the matching pair and stack the correct ordered pair cup under the graph cup. Students can take turns matching the ordered pairs with their graphs.

The Setup for Expanded Notation:

Use any type of cup and a permanent marker to write three different forms of the same number onto three separate cups:
- Numerical Form (e.g., 4.35)
- Word Form (e.g., Four and Thirty-Five Hundredths)
- Expanded Form (e.g., $4 \times 1 + 3 \times 0.1 + 5 \times 0.01$ )
When students stack three matching cups, they will be practicing numbers in three different formats and building a deeper understanding of decimal relationships.

Decimal Order	Allows students to physically compare sizes.

How to Create These Decimal Blocks

You can easily source your materials! Many resale stores sell large building blocks. After a nice cleaning, they're as good as new. For around $15, you can purchase a new set of jumbo blocks at a local department store, making this a true budget-friendly resource.

Here are the three simple steps to create each block face:

Visual Representation: Using a permanent marker (black works best!), draw a long tenth rectangle. Shade in part of the rectangle to represent the value (e.g., shade one section for $0.1$ , two for $0.2$ , three for $0.3$ , and so on).
Numerical Form: On another side of the same block, write down the decimal's numerical equivalent (e.g., 0.3).
Word Form: On a third side, write down the decimal in word form (e.g., Three-Tenths).

Repeat this process for all tenths ( $0.1$ through $1.0$ ).

Here are some possible tasks you can assign to groups or individuals using the decimal blocks:

Display Board Learning Center

Sometimes space is a concern. For this reason, I keep portable literacy and math center games in my collection. I cut my display boards in half horizontally. I am able to make two learning centers with just one board. . Velcro is attached to the back of each pin to easily remove and reattach each bowling pin. For this center, I place question cards behind the bowling pins using paper clips. I can interchange the cards and reuse the boards with any subject. Pop-up books are coming next week.

To play strike, students must answer the question correctly to knock down a pin. This is a small group game. Students take turns answering questions. If the question is answered correctly, the student takes down a bowling pin. Each student takes a turn answering a question. The student with the most pins at the end of the game wins. This game is for two players.

I love math, but I did not always feel this way. It was not until things began to "click" that my world opened, and I began to view math in a new way.

A love of math and deep understanding are at the heart of inquiry-based instruction. Inquiry-based instruction is a type of instruction where students investigate and draw conclusions about information.

Sometimes manipulatives get lost in the shuffle during instruction, or they are reserved for students that do not grasp math concepts. Using manipulatives with all students is crucial and is a great way to introduce a math concept. It encourages deeper understander rather than only memorizing math steps.

To teach math in an inquiry-based way, create scenarios similar to science labs. Put manipulatives on the desk in front of a small group of a small group of students along with an index card with a question for thought. Students make their predictions first, then they use the manipulatives to determine if their assumptions are correct or not.

I asked a group of students, "How many eighths fraction pieces are needed to create one whole?"

Some of the students were immediately able to say 8/8ths energetically while others said, "Six out of eight pieces". Once the students used their manipulatives to find out the answer, they created more equivalent fractions and discovered patterns in what is needed in order to create a whole. By the end of the lesson, everyone understood the concept.

Have you ever thought about making learning sheets with students. I created the pretend garden shown above with construction paper and white cardstock. Using makers, I colored each vegetable.

I glued (only the edges) of brown paper onto blue paper. Slits were cut along

the curved brown lines to create pockets.

How Can You Use This With Students?

Slits were cut along the curved lines. The root vegetables were tucked into each slit to pull out.

Put words onto the vegetables. Students can only harvest the vegetables that have words that only have a certain sound.
Review social studies words urban and rural. In a small group, students can simulate being farmers.
With younger students, write letters or numbers on each vegetables. Students can only harvest the vegetable that has a letter that makes a certain sound.
