NCFL celebrated National Family Literacy Month yesterday with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH).The Verizon Foundation made this wonderful event possible!

Staff from NCFL arrived early to help set up for the event.

Families from local Toyota Family Literacy Program sites were invited to be part of the celebration.

Recap: LTAB

Do you know what PSM, MSDP and DASD stand for? Neither do we!

But the 13 teams participating in this year’s Louisville Technology Acronym Bee did. This was NCFL’s 7th year to host the LTAB—a spelling bee of sorts using technology acronyms and a testament to creative fundraisers for literacy. This year’s competition was sponsored for the second year in a row by Republic Bank.

Road trip: Better World Books

Emily Kirkpatrick and Lisa Avetisian from NCFL set off for the Better World Books (BWB) facility near South Bend, Indiana, last week. We’ve put together a little summary of their trip. Enjoy!

One of BWB’s new books bins. Fun fact: BWB has saved more than 29,860,000 books from being thrown into landfills.

1 million minutes!

Pitney Bowes Inc., the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and NCFL are applauding youth across the country for collectively reading more than 1 million minutes in the 2009 “Fast Break To Reading” program. Starting in June, the national literacy initiative encouraged young students to read throughout the WNBA season and track their minutes online.

Reading Tips

National Family Literacy Day is coming up November 1. But every day is a good day to read with your family! Here are some tips to help improve reading skills from NCFL.

• Reading is a skill that gets better with practice. Make reading fun. It is not all about drill.

• Encourage reading everywhere! Have your child read street signs and T-shirts. Get him to help with cooking (reading recipes, labels and shopping lists). Have your child keep track of family activities on a calendar.

Help Celebrate National Day on Writing (October 20)

NCFL is a partner in the National Gallery of Writing, an online exhibition of writing hosted by the National Council of Teachers of English. The pieces will be unveiled on October 20, 2009, as part of The National Day on Writing, an initiative that celebrates the variety and importance of writing in daily life.

Tune in Sunday: NCFL, Byron Pitts on CBS Sunday Morning

As announced earlier this week, Byron Pitts has released his memoir, Step Out on Nothing: How Faith and Family Helped Me Conquer Life’s Challenges, about his struggles with illiteracy. This Sunday, October 4, a story about Byron and others who have faced literacy challenges and overcome them is scheduled to run on the CBS Sunday Morning show. NCFL’s own Emily Kirkpatrick was interviewed about literacy in America and the work NCFL is doing to help combat the illiteracy epidemic. Don’t forget to tune in!
