The Vanishing Glass ~ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Pug's Harry Potter Reading Challenge '17

2017-08-14T20:15:00.000-07:00

Your host this week is our guest, Poppi, who is a foster pug with APARN. She has 3 questions from The Vanishing Glass for you.

1. Who makes Aunt Petunia a cup of strong sweet tea?

2. Who all goes on the trip to the zoo?

3. What does the snake call Harry?

This weeks free bookmark will have the lovely design to the left on it. The background is Harry's cupboard. Dario the pug takes the place of Harry, with the boa constrictor flicking it's tongue at him. Dario appears to be dreaming of all the presidents Dudley received on that fateful birthday. At the top is the chapter stars featured in each of the House colors.

This chapter is now closed for answers, please visit the main page to answer the currently open questions!

Your host this week is the queen of sass and class herself, Miss Willo, and she has 5 trivia questions for you from The Boy Who Lived. She wants to make sure you read carefully (or are forced to go track down those pesky answers).

1. What kind of owl fluttered past the window?
A large tawny owl

2. What does Mr. Dursley not approve of?
Imagination

3. Who did Professor McGonagall blame for the shooting stars?
Dedalus Diggle

4. How many hands does Professor Dumbledore's watch have?
Twelve hands

5. What is Professor Dumbledore's scar of?
A perfect map of the London Underground

And here is this weeks prize! A person who participates in the challenge by answering the trivia questions correctly in the comments, will have their name drawn to win! See official rules here.

This upcycled metal bookmark is dye sublimated with a special image for the first chapter of the 2017 Pug's Harry Potter Reading Challenge.

It features Oreo the pug who passed away a short time ago and inspired bringing back the Pug's Harry Potter Reading Challenge. Oreo is surrounded by elements from the first chapter of the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone; Professor Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall, Rubeus Hagrid, Privet Drive, an owl, the chapter stars, a spider web, and Harry Potter himself.

If you would like to purchase this bookmark, you can do so here.

The Return of the Pug's Harry Potter Reading Challenge

2017-07-31T12:45:00.001-07:00

Oreo from a previous challenge

I'm excited to announce the return of the Pug's Harry Potter Reading Challenge!
It's been a number of years since the pugs challenged us last to read Harry Potter. Our number one challenger and expert picture poser was Oreo. Sadly, just two days ago Oreo left to run free at the Rainbow Bridge, but we know he is here in spirit with us! In his honor and to bring back some fun in our lives, here we are again to read the fantastic little book series.

The landscape has changed a good deal since I posted last, namely the fact that our bookstore is going stronger than ever! And we now make custom fan gear! In that we will be making a a special design for each chapter of our Pugs Harry Potter Reading Challenge, we will give away a bookmark with each design on it. You can purchase the design on other items (and as a bookmark) at our store. I'll post the design later this week.

The way it will work is thus:
Each week, starting August 7th, we will post 3 questions from a chapter of the book. So next week our questions will come from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Boy Who Lived. We will be using the new illustrated version of the book when we come up with the questions (pictured below with Willo). Each person will leave their answers in the comments. Is it an honor system? Yes, yes it is. For each question answered correctly, the persons name will be entered into a drawing for the bookmark. (Yes, that's 3 chances each one.) We will announce the winner and answers the day before the new questions. If it's confusing - don't worry! You'll get the hang of it!

Just make sure to read the first chapter of the first book this week! Enjoy!

I'd bet my white stripe that Dumbledore wrote the school song:

Teach us something please,

Whether we be old and bald

Or young with scabby knees,

With some interesting stuff,

For now they're bare and full of air,

Quoted from Pottermore:
"Where exactly the Hogwarts Express came from has never been conclusively proven, although it is a fact that there are secret records at the Ministry of Magic detailing a mass operation involving one hundred and sixty-seven Memory Charms and the largest ever mass Concealment Charm performed in Britain. The morning after these alleged crimes, a gleaming scarlet steam engine and carriages astounded the villagers of Hogsmeade (who had also not realised they had a railway station), while several bemused Muggle railway workers down in Crewe spent the rest of the year grappling with the uncomfortable feeling that they had mislaid something important."

1/3 cup root beer

1 tbsp Butterscotch syrup/topping

1. Pour dash of cinnamon sugar in a glass (at least 16 ounces)

1/2 cup half and half cream
1/8 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
Butterscotch
Ginger Ale

DIRECTIONS:

· Prepare Sauce

Combine butter, brown sugar, half and half cream and salt in a small saucepan and simmer gently for five minutes. Stir in vanilla and let cool.

Place a tablespoon of butterscotch in a glass, top off with ginger ale to fill. Add 1/4 cup sauce and serve!

Day 3's Butterbeer

Recipe #13 (From an article on MSN)
Ingredients:
4 tablespoon butter
1/4 cup sugar
2 cup warm milk
1 x scant tablespoon vanilla
Pinch salt
Directions:

1. Heat butter in saucepan and melt, stirring until butter bubbles

2. Add sugar and stir slowly over medium heat until medium brown in color

3. Heat milk in microwave and pour into blender

4. Blend on low and slowly add sugar mixture

5. Add vanilla and salt

Day 4 Recipe (Also from the MSN article)

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups milk
2 teaspoons honey
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons sugar
2 teaspoons hot chocolate powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 ounce butterscotch schnapps
Directions:

1. Melt butter and honey together

2. Add milk, sugar, vanilla, and butterscotch schnapps

3. Microwave or heat on stovetop until warm

4. Mix in hot chocolate powder and cinnamon

Day 5 - Frozen Butterbeer by Jessica at Bake Me Away

1 liter cream soda
1 cup heavy cream
butterscotch sauce to taste (I’m guessing I used ~1/3 cup)

Pour the soda into a large shallow dish (I used a 9×13 plastic container). Place in the freezer for 30 minutes. Remove from freezer and if the soda has started to freeze around the edges, break up and rake the frozen bits to the center with a fork. Put the container back in the freezer for another 30 minutes. Keep repeating this process (it’s just like making a granita!) until the soda is very slushy. You’ll want to be able to drink it through a straw. This took about 3 hours starting with room temperature soda, but could take less if your soda is chilled and if you have a colder freezer.

When the soda is almost ready, make the topping. Beat the heavy cream until it is lightened, but still loose. (Think beer foam instead of whipped cream.) Whisk in enough butterscotch to give the cream a definite butterscotch flavor. I’m staying at a dorm right now and didn’t bring measuring spoons with me, but am going to guess that I used about 1/3 cup. You can see here how much is missing from the 12.25 oz jar! But really, go by your own personal taste.
To serve, spoon or pour the slushy soda into clear cups or glasses. Spoon the foamy topping on top. You can drink it with or without a straw! (the latter will give you a nice ‘stache)
Another way to make this could be to freeze the cream soda in ice cube trays, then toss the cubes in a blender. (If you try this, let me know.) Of course, an even easier alternative would be to make the non-frozen version by (do I need to say this?) not freezing the soda.

The Mugged Pug

2012-08-11T14:43:00.000-07:00

Penned By: Darrel and Sally Odgers

Shuffle, the Australian pug is having a really bad day. His owner, Walter Barkly, has gone off for the weekend and left him with the annoying neighbor, Uptown Lord Setter, a hyper-active red setter. When Shuffle decides to walk home his day goes from bad to worse when he gets mugged and lands in the pound. The local human police sergeant springs him and takes him back to his place where Dog Detective, Jack Russel, lives. Jack of course immediately takes Shuffle's mugging case. Will Jack and his sidekick Foxie, a fox terrier, be in time to catch the culprit before he flees town?

My 7 year old niece loves this book series! Of course, the fact that 2 of her dogs have been a Jack Russel (Patch) and a toy fox terrier (Foxie) couldn't possibly have anything to do with it.

Quote: "Most dogs lie with their noses on their paws. Pugs have their noses in a different place. Therefore, pugs lie with their jaws on their paws. This is a fact."

Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism

2012-08-07T23:49:00.000-07:00

Penned By: Georgia Byng

Petula the pug has a grumpy and mean-spirited owner who feeds her only chocolate cookies. Inexplicably, her tummy always hurts which makes her grumpy and mean-spirited too. But she wants to follow her nature and be a sweet and adventurous little pug. Petula seizes her chance when she makes friends with the hypnotist Molly Moon. Molly's just discovering her power's of hypnotism which starts a grand adventure that sends the two half way around the world. They're now living the high life where they each get all they could ever dream of. A life of fame and fortune may not be all it's cracked up to be though and it seems someone sinister is keeping a close eye on them. A choice will have to be made; the world or true friendship?

This series is so much fun and of course our favorite character is Petula the pug! The author did a wonderful job of capturing pugginess!

Quote: "Petula still had a tummyache, but she liked this girl so much she made her way up the stairs for a stroke. She wagged her tail, which was a lovely sensation, because she hadn't wagged it for weeks."

Unlovable

2012-08-07T07:13:00.000-07:00

Penned By: Dan Yaccarino

This is one of my all time favorite books. One of the kids in my after school program introduced it to me because of my pugs. I think I love it so much because it epitomizes how a pug makes you feel. This can be a cold hard world but if you have the love of a pug nothing else matters.

Alfred is a pug with a fantastic bed and nice yard. However, all the nice things in the world don't make up for having friends which is something this poor little puggie just doesn't have. That is until a new neighbor moves in and they bcome friends sight unseen. Alfred loves his new found friendship but he wasn't exactly honest with Rex....

The simple illustrations of this book never fail to make me cry!

Quote: "But what was it that made him unlovable?"

Pugs, pugs, and more pugs!

2012-08-05T22:27:00.002-07:00

If you're a follower over on my Facebook page you know that I made an announcement that LitPool will be returning this week in full force with a special theme! I'm sorry for my long absence but with a new job and all the poor blog just got put on the back burner but I hope to be back in full force with a regular 3-5 posts a week.

On to the theme! As many of you are likely aware I have two obsessions, books and pugs. And as evidenced by the Pug's Harry Potter Reading Challenge the two are not mutually exclusive! Every summer the local pug rescue, Arizona Pug Adoption and Rescue Network (APARN), runs Arizona's Cutest Pug Contest. The prizes are 12 coveted spots in Arizona's Cutest Pug Calendar and first prize is being declared Arizona's Cutest Pug! The real prize though, is all the money that is raised for Arizona's pugs in need. Every $1 vote over the 12 weeks goes directly to help pay for the pugs that APARN rescues.

In the past my pug's Oreo (the black) and Willo (the fawn) have made it into the calendar. This year it's my pug Leo's (the brindle) turn and he has had an excellent run! If you would like to learn more about him and his competitors in the contest check out his Facebook page.

So, what's the theme already? Well, you see, it's calendar week! In honor of the 16 pugs still in the contest I'm posting a blog a day on a "pug" fiction book. At the end will be the return of an updated and much more challenging Pug's Harry Potter Reading Challenge 2012!

So if you like pugs why don't you head on over to APARN's contest and vote for a cute one! If you think they are just pugly, head on over to APARN's website and let those cute little puggies prove you wrong! Still not convinced? Stick around on LitPool these week and check out pugs in fiction!

And now a special message from Leo the Brindle Pug:
