Released in 2007, it has since been discountinued and I'm frantically stalking the internet for remaining bottles to hoard.

{ Noshing } on Sweet Potatoes. They're sweet enough as is for my tastebuds so I skip the brown sugar and go for sour cream with a few pinches of cayenne. Holy delish. Also loving french fry versions with organic ketchup - so tomato-y!

{ Reading } "Gay Men Don't Get Fat" , a hilarious little book from window dresser extraordinaire Simon Doonan.

{ Listening } to The Hunger Games Soundtrack. I haven't read the books or watched the movie but the songs are rocking my world. (Via my new fave, Spotify.)

Hello dears, it's been a while, no?

After 16 days away from home, 17,000 miles traveled, 55 hours in transit time, 4 Cracker Barrels, my 1st TN Easter in 6 years, and one very special wedding - I made it back to Chicago. And finally, to the blog. But only for a moment as we're off again to... VEGAS! (I may never get back on the right time zone for sleep ;)

Although being gone so much at once can be stressful (terrified I'll forget to pay a bill or something important) truth be told, it's been good for me to decompress from my regular life and responsibilities. Taking a break from my usual hobbies has made me enjoy more of actual life lately, to be more present. So I'm going to enjoy it a little while longer. In the meantime, here are some updates and happenings.

I've become addicted to Instagram (finally for Android!)
Afternoon tea is my new favorite experience.
Can't stop wearing my neon happy bracelet
Spotify is rocking my world (click here to jam to my 2012 faves!)
Bought this dress (in mint) in Hong Kong, so light and airy for summer.
Totally want to sip on this all spring
The summer clothes came out of storage and winter went back in, yes!

Hong Kong: Skyline

I'm currently in Hong Kong and sharing photo's and stories from my last trip. Catch up on the last few posts here.

The skyline in Hong Kong is a spectacular sight. In my opinion, the best views are from Victoria Harbor and The Peak. (A bit touristy perhaps but why mess with a good thing?) The harbor gives you a ground level view while The Peak allows for a 'top of the world' experience where it seems like you see nothing but tiny lights for miles and miles. I was awestruck. My visit to The Peak happened at dusk which allowed for some almost night shots that I'm quite fond of (if I do say so myself). Every night at 8pm a laser light show happens and it's really neat experience from both vantage points!

Hong Kong: The Big Buddha

I'm currently in Hong Kong and sharing photo's and stories from my last trip. Catch up on the last few posts here.

The Big Buddha is one of my most favorite attractions in Hong Kong. For starters, he's massive and I am completely captivated by it. In order to reach the Buddha, you must take a tram (I opted for the glass bottom version, so cool!) and as he comes into view what starts as a small statue in the distance becomes a larger than life sculpture atop a mountain. I took more pictures of the Buddha than anything else on my trip, by far. The details are just so neat and there's a calm in his open palm. A few of these hang by my desk at work to remind me to be peaceful, purposeful and compassionate. (I'm not Buddhist but I do enjoy learning about other religions and philosophy's - this is a great summary of Buddhism beliefs if you're interested.)

If you light a lamp for somebody, it will also brighten your path.

You would have thought I'd never seen a designer store before but for some reason in Hong Kong they seem bigger and better than ever. Maybe it was the line outside of Louis Vuitton on a random weekday afternoon that intrigued me... Malls and shopping centers are massive and bustling with people. In other words, there's a great shopping energy flowing around!

The longest mall escalator I've ever seen.

Ah, the yellow skirt, so refreshing for spring. And so many ways to wear it! My pair of yellow sandals are nearly worn out after years of being my favorite go-with-everything warm weather shoe. I plan on using the same philosophy this summer by incorporating a flowy yellow skirt into the lineup as my new neutral. Look how adorable with denim! What are you craving lately?

Well, another SPD has come and gone and I'm kind of sad about it (that tends to happen when dress-up/costume holiday's are over.) One might think that 12 hours of celebrating should be enough to last me until next year but to keep the fun going just a bit longer I thought I'd share some blog appropriate pictures of our very green day. The weather was amaaayzing - nearly 80 degrees, hence the river looked greener than ever. (Other than changing the colors of these photos to black and white I didn't alter the green at all, it really is that bright! If you've never see it check this out.) Sunshine and Saturday meant more pedestrians and bigger crowds than usual but the city handled it well by just closing down the busiest streets. (Don't ever say Chicago doesn't know how to celebrate!) And of course we consumed green beer and made a pizza pit stop. All in all I'd call that good times celebrating St. Patrick (Swazye) Day! Do you celebrate SPD in your city? I never did in Tennessee and I'm pretty sure it'll be a requirement for any future living locations.

Chicago Fashion Foundation's 5th Annual Scholarship Event

As you may have noticed things around the blog have become a bit blah lately. That's because I've been spending loads of time preparing for the Chicago Fashion Foundation's 5th Annual Scholarship Event and Fashion Show that took place last week! Ten Chicago based aspiring design students presented their interpretations of Chicago's street style to a crowd of over 350 fashion industry professional and enthusiasts at the Chicago Cultural Center. The scholarship competition and runway show hosted by the VH1's "House of Consignment" star Corri McFadden also featured looks from past finalists, "Project Runway" contestant Peach Carr's latest collection, a multitude of fashionable items up for grabs in a silent auction and a best dressed award handed out courtesy of the ladies of Style Block. The designs this year were spectacular and it's a quite treat to see them grow from inspiration board to runway ready! Take a peek at the action...

I picked up these pants at Target on a grocery run last weekend (love it when that happens!) and couldn't decide between the black or brown version, so I just got both. Since then I've been wearing different versions of this outfit like it's going out of style - as above, with a belted cardigan, a cowboy boot vibe and even with just a graphic tee. To summarize, I'm groovin' on these pants and at $23 how could I not?? They cover the printed denim trend, are super versatile and the fit is amazing for the price (can't go wrong with a 98% cotton/ 2% spandex blend). (Plus, you can afford 8 pairs for the price of these.) I'm also having a major moment with these JewelMint earrings which was pointed out when hubby stated that I've worn them over and over lately. He likes the art deco look, I like that they look like zippers. Either way, they're fab. And if it appears that I'm wearing more makeup than usual, I am... because I was on TV this day! We were promoting the Chicago Fashion Foundation event on WGN (which you can check out here) and I'll have some pictures from the big night to share with you tomorrow - good times!

Deer and Pouf Decor: 2 Things I Adore!

It's been ages since I've put much thought into our home decor. After almost 2 years of thinking we're selling, moving or somethingfortheloveofcoconut I had put off any effort into updating our condo, even in the smallest way, waiting to see what might transpire. Turns out, we're still here and I'm sooo ready for an update. Even though I'm still working on the master plan for the living room, I made two purchases over the weekend that I'm absolutely thrilled with (and eagerly awaiting their delivery!) that I just had to share. The pouf has been on my wishlist for months - after hemming and hawing and refusing to pay $200 for one my genius husband suggested ebay et voila!, pouf be mine. The deer, however, was an instantaneous decision that I fell upon while browsing rugs. My heart skipped a beat at the sight (you know I love me some deer!) and after Retail Me Not came through with a coupon code (never, ever, ever pay full price!) sweet Deer* also became mine. I'm giddy at the thought of both. My mom (avid reader of this blog and many others) shared this article with me about being happy at home and it all made perfect sense. Besides, I know I'll love these items no matter where we might live in the near or distant future.

*Names for Deer are in the works and I would love your input. Looking for something light and sweet but not to sugary. (Naming inanimate objects is one of my "things", my first car was called Francois if you must know. :)

P.S. I know it's been more of a blah, less of a blog around here lately but things should be calming down and getting back to normal with the Chicago Fashion Foundation event behind me (it went great!). Thanks for your patience dear readers!

10 Years Ago Today...

Nashville, TN - March 1st, 2002

Ten years ago today I got lost in Nashville trying to find my friend Summer at a recording studio on Music Row. I pulled over and parked in front of a courtyard apartment building until she could come find me.

She arrived and said "This guy I know lives there, we should go say hi."

To which I said, "No, I'm hungry and moody, let's just go eat."

She was having none of it so we went in to say hello. The guy offered me a frozen pizza that I refused then invited himself to dinner with us. We spent the rest of the evening pretending to be music executives while Summer worked her magic at a recording artist conference. (People kept asking if we were brother and sister... awkward - we just met!) Then we danced salsa until the wee hours of the morning. At the end of the night he asked to borrow my phone, I let him, he called himself from it and that's how he got my number which he called the very next day to set up our first date. And the rest is history so they say...

Why did I post a photo of me with Summer you ask? Well who do you think was behind the camera silly? It's the only one I have from that night and I love it so - we owned the world and my life was about to change more than I could ever imagine. Happy 10 Year Day We Met Anniversary Alex!!

Feeling Down Today

My dog in Tennessee passed away yesterday - sweet Callie Marie. Pausing to remember our ice cream evenings, pool side lounging and her funny elbow kisses. She was the prettiest puppy you've ever seen, a darn good guard dog and had the deepest people eyes. (And was featured in an outfit post here once before.) Ah, pets are the best. Hug your fur-babies today. Back to regular programming tomorrow.

Speaking of being busy, one of the big things on my plate right now is gearing up for the Chicago Fashion Foundation's 5th Annual Scholarship Event and Fashion Show. Taking place on March 7th at the Chicago Cultural Center and hosted by eDrop-off owner and VH1 'House of Consigment' star Corri McFadden, this is going to be our biggest event to date! Themed to Street Style: Chicago Fashion through Chicago Communities, ten promising design students will present their garments and compete for the grand prize - scholarship awards and the coveted title of Chicago's Future in Fashion. (I got a sneak peak at the fittings on Monday - these designers are on fire!) If you're in the area, I'd like to invite you to attend. Favorite Face Washes

Let's talk face wash, foams, scrubs and suds! I rotate between a few favorites, here's the scoop.

Sad fact: I still get breakouts and I'm not getting any younger. Denial ain't nothing but a river in Egypt... so I might as well kill two issues with one cleanser that contains anti-aging and anti-blemish properties. (Can I get a "woot!"?) On top of that, my skin is super oily so when it needs extra exfoliation I love Olay's pore minimizing scrub. It's fresh scent and gentle suds make my skin feel squeaky clean. To make matters more bogus, sometimes my face feels dry despite my oil producing pores. To keep a healthy balance I use Purity in the morning - the non drying and hydrating formula and feel ahmayzing with the Clarisonic Mia. (I love the Neutrogena with the Mia as well but I avoid any cleansers with exfoliating beads or scrubs, as they feel too harsh paired together.)

What are you skin care issues and how do you solve them? Am I the only one who chuckles at products made for 'normal' skin? I guess I'm just jealous!

It seems like simplifying (or a version of it...streamlining, minimizing, downsizing) is the word on everyone's lips lately. We're busier than ever - which can be a blessing and a curse. My word of the year is 'cleansing' and I'm reminding myself of that before I take on any new projects, commitments, accept invitations or make product purchases. That's not to say I'm going hermit, just the way I remember to focus on what matters and why it matters. Since many of us are in the same busy boat so I thought it might be nice to share some sites and stories that I'm enjoying and have been helpful for me recently.

Michael Hyatt - Intentional Leadership

I really can't say enough about Michael and his site so here's a bit to get you going:

Start by Creating a Life Plan. How can we get to where we want to be if we don't even know what we want? It's not about how to get more done, it's about doing what's important to your plan and forgetting the rest.
Make sure you're signed up for the daily email. It's the first one I read in the mornings. Subjects range from leadership, productivity, and social media among other things and I'm always enlightened.
If you're a list maker you'll love this. I recently started the 'priority tag' method and it's changing my productivity immensely.

Makeunder My Life

Jess is a wonder woman in my book - a Chicago based jewelry designer, blogger and business consultant. Though our path's haven't crossed in person yet I hope that day comes soon and after browsing MML I'm sure you'll wish for that, too. Love Spell Pendant

You guys have heard of JewelMint right? The subscription jewelry line that offers new pieces of jewelry every month for $29.99 per piece? Before I go further, hang in there, this might get wordy but it'll be worth it...
(If you're really pressed for time skip down to the bullet points for the cliff notes version, I've got your back busy ladies. But otherwise, I hope you'll settle in for a minute.)

It's easy to fall into the trap of cheap accessories. And while cheap pieces aren't bad, they're often exactly that. Fading, breaking, lost stones, etc. "Ah, I'll just toss it." we say. But as I'm declaring this my year of the 'cleanse' I'm trying hard to rid myself and my home of junk. I've been debating over ordering from JewelMint for a while now - one, because when I normally pay 'the cost of lunch' for a new necklace or bracelet, $29.99 seemed pricey. And two, because I wasn't sure the quality would be worth it. (Another celebrity's name attached to a less than stellar product...) (This line is designed by actress Kate Bosworth and stylist Cher Coulter.)

But, I received my first JewelMint order over the weekend and was more than pleasantly surprised. I say pleasantly surprised because I consider myself pretty critical of products in general. After all, I get paid (in my full time job) to figuratively pick apart apparel products and analyze the details to negotiate for the best cost, quality, etc. So you can see why I might be a picky consumer. However, after my first experience with JewelMint I have nothing but great things to say. Starting from viewing the individual video's per piece (more on that below) things felt right. Then the package arrived - black and sleek and mysterious. I opened the box revealing my first awesome piece and was thrilled with the weight, sturdiness, security of clasps and overall quality. More than anything, it's so easy. I do love shopping but I rarely make enough time to do it properly. It's so nice (and thrilling) to be able to have a new showroom emailed to me each month and make a selection from high quality, on trend pieces. In fact, my favorite realization was that each piece has qualities making it unique and special, yet feel like something you've had for ages.
