Dabur, Vatika Coconut Hair Oil

Sunday night something wonderful and rare happened to me, I was left with the car! Yay! Armed with a few dollars, the car and my boredom of staying home all the time, I went to the first place I could think, ASIAN MARKET!!! Whoo-hoo! In actuality, I was left with the car so I could take it to a Mexican llantera shop to change the tire.

Believe it or not, being in an Asian market makes me feel at home. I find comfort and closeness to the people and food there. Strange, I know.

During the Plantation era of Hawai'i, beginning around the early 1850's, the Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Puerto Rican, Portuguese, Spanish and Filipinos all came to work in the sugar cane, pineapple, macadamia and coffee fields.

In fact, it was on the Plantation fields where "Pidgin" was born. Pidgin English is a dialect used by the local people of Hawaii. It is not the same as the native language of our people, which is Hawaiian. Pidgin is a culmination of English and other languages that was spoken on the Plantation fields by the workers to help communicate with one another. A Japanese man could talk to the Puerto Rican man, a Spaniard could talk to a Korean, so on-so forth. As hard as I try, I don't think I'll ever kick my pidgin accent. Although my boyfriend is getting better at understanding what I'm saying, I still need to translate once in awhile.

Needless to say our own Hawaiian culture was heavily influenced by others during this time, especially the food. I miss local Hawaiian food terribly!!! I'm salivating just thinking about it.

I tend to get side-tracked and go off on a tangent, sorry about that. That was a nice little history lesson though, wouldn't you say?

Anyways, I finally made it to Asiana Market.

Many of the people I see here, look like they could've been my neighbors in Pearl City and Kalihi and most of the ingredients to the dishes I grew up with are not found in American supermarkets so I immediately identify with everything and everyone in any Asian market. I get especially giddy because I get to see my desi (Indian) folk! I am the biggest dork when it comes to that, my boyfriend is so shame to walk around with me. Haha! I also get a kick out of the innocent signs and advertisements as well.

After walking around the store for a bit, I came across the Indian Beauty section. The smells of the different incense, powders and oils were incredible, I imagine the entire country smells like this. Looking around for bit I saw a selection of hair oils. There were about 3 or 4 different brands. I immediately recognized, Dabur. I had two bottles of Dabur, Amla Hair Oil when I was living in Hawaii. I'm not sure why it didn't make it to Phoenix with me but I really do miss them, so I decided to buy another one. One bottle in particular jumped out at me!

Dabur's, Vatika Coconut Hair Oil's ingredients include Amla, henna, coconut oil, lemon, neem and rosemary, just to name a few. All chosen carefully to provide natural nourishment for hair and to help improve scalp condition and control dandruff. Hair is stronger, thicker and shinier.

I couldn't help but want it and with a price tag of less than $2.00, I was sold.

My hair is naturally course, frizzy and dry or "Coconut husk." as my mom and I would joke. Last night I washed my hair and decided to try my new hair oil. I added a few drops to my palm and rubbed my hands together to get the oil nice and warm. I applied it to my damp hair and combed through. I personally love the smell. It's not too overpowering, as the Amla hair oil can be. The next day I checked my hair and it seems calmer and a lot shinier. So far so good! I'm going to continue to use my new oil for the next month or so and give a review.

Remembering 9/11

Today I reflect on the innocent lives lost on September 11th 2001. I remember you. The tragic events of that day, changed America and the world forever. The lives that were lost & sacrificed can never be replaced. I hope that you are resting in peace and that your families & friends have found comfort and strength in your absence. My thoughts and prayers also go out to our soldiers and their families who have also lost their lives since then.

May we never forget to love others and to love ourselves not just today but everyday. May we speak kind words and do good deeds. Life is short and precious. I am so grateful for everything I am blessed with. For the health and well-being of my family and friends and for the life I still enjoy today. Take some time to remember those who were lost and tell someone that you love them.

Jewelry and Makeup and Snakes, Oh-My!!

While working on my "Serpents and Women" post, I looked at a lot of pictures of snakes and realized that some people will never be able to bring themselves to own, touch or even look at a snake. Take my grandma for instance, she refuses to look at a snake, even if it's a picture or a small toy. So if you don't fancy a beautiful boa (constrictor) draped across your shoulders, like my grandma, why not wear a powerful, statement snake ring? Or a dainty snake necklace? There's no reason why women can't channel the serpent goddess in their everyday lives!

Trinkets & Baubles

I love being inspired and I couldn't help but be inspired by these creatures! Their colors, patterns and texture made me think of all sorts of makeup color combinations, jewelry, fashion and a whole bunch of other amazing ideas!

The styles are choices are endless! No matter your age, color or price range, there is something for everyone.

Bollywood & Hollywood

Snake jewelry has been a hot trend in Hollywood and Bollywood for years and shows no signs of slowly down. Movie stars, models, singers and celebutantes have all been spotted with these gorgeous baubles! Rings, necklaces, cuffs, bracelets and earrings are everywhere. Adorning everyone from Lady Gaga to Angelina. This snake trend is here to stay.

Philanthropy

There is a lot that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have accomplished together but who would've thought jewelry designers were among that list!? The power couple collaborated with Asprey to create the luxurious line named "The Protector". Inspired by the snake, Jolie considers the snake to a "the protector" of her family. Proceeds from the collection will generously be donated to the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, an organization co-founded by Jolie to provide funds and raise awareness towards children who have been victims of catastrophic events. How cool is that?!

Snake skin Manicures

I came across snake skin manicures on the internet and thought it was brilliant! To get a full mani/pedi done in a salon can run you anywhere from $150-$300, I don't know about you but this is a little out of my budget! If you have the patience though, you can do this in the comfort of your own home. There are up to 170 possible hue and accent color combinations. This is so sheik, I love it!

The snake skin used for this has been shed naturally by a healthy, living snake. No snakes are harmed for this, so please, "live and let live.". Don't know anyone who has a snake? Serpents and Women

Minoan Snake Goddess

What are your first thoughts when you think of a snake? "Gross". "Slithery", maybe. How about, "scary", Ooh I know, "poisonous" or better yet..."creepy?". Chances are the word "feminine" doesn't cross your mind. However, throughout time, snakes are thought to have been the familiars of women. In the bible, Eve was temped in the Garden of Eden by a snake to eat the forbidden fruit of knowledge. In ancient Egypt, Cleopatra committed suicide by allowing an Asp to bite her. Ancient civilizations and cultures around the globe, in one way or another, have their own feelings about this. Telling different legends and myths about these serpentine creatures, and not just that they were snakes but that they were women as well. They are as much feared as they are revered and respected.

I find this fascinating because I love snakes. Maybe it's because growing up, there were no snakes in Hawaii. I only ever saw them on TV and once in Las Vegas. I find them mysterious, beautiful and quite frankly, frightening. You cannot deny the lure they have. Whether they're at the zoo, in a cage, slithering along the highway or draped on someone's shoulders, people stop and look. The same could be said about women. If there's a beautiful woman around, people will stop and look.

Now I do not claim to know everything. I've tried my best to be as accurate as possible with names, cultures, events etc... As they say in Hula, "A'ohe pau ka 'ike i ka halau ho'okahi." or "Not all knowledge is found in one school/source." I'm sure there are many variations and other stories or legends as well. My intention is not to offend anyone either. If you have any stories, please share them in the comments below!

So what are these similarities?

We women are complex creatures. A vast and deep ocean of thoughts, emotions, character, charms and mystery. As Oscar Wilde so wisely said, "Women are meant to be loved, not understood." We are creators and the bearers of life.

Aboriginal "Rainbow Snake"

Snakes were often thought of as creators as well and were a common feature in creation myths. Many people of Africa and Australia had myths of a Rainbow Snake, which was either Mother Earth, giving birth to all animals or a Water-God whose witherings created rivers, creeks and oceans. Greek cosmological myth speaks of Ophion, the snake who incubated the primordial egg from which all things were born. In Egyptian myth, the state of existence before creation was symbolized as Amduat, a many coiled serpent from which Ra, the sun god and all creation rose. In Chinese mythology, Nüwa, a snake with the head of a woman, created the first humans, one by one with clay but this took too much time and strength. To conserve energy, she dipped a rope in clay and flicked it so blobs of clay landed everywhere, each blob became an individual human. The first humans she created became high-class, the second ones became low-class.

The Gorgon, Medusa

However, where we are the creators we are also the destroyers. The Gorgons, in Greek mythology, were beautiful snake women. The most famous and recognized was Medusa. Cursed after angering the Goddess Athena, her gaze could turn any man to stone. In Judeo-Christian belief, Eve was tempted by the snake in the Garden of Eden to eat the forbidden fruit of knowledge, therefore responsible for the fall of man. Was Eve tempted or just willing to listen to a creature we are thought to be so connected to? Maybe we'll discuss that one some other time....

We are tempting and dangerous. I think few would disagree, except maybe my male gay friends, that there is nothing as tempting or beautiful as a woman. There is no question that we have a certain sensual aura and power around us. A women's sensual appeal has inspired the poets for centuries. George Washington once said, "When once the woman has tempted us and we have tasted the forbidden fruit, there is no such thing as checking our appetites, whatever the consequence might be." Forbidden fruit, the serpent and Eve...maybe we are one in the same.

Beautiful & Dangerous

We understand that our sensuality is like a force of fire. Depending on it's use, can either warm our beds and relationships, light up a dark room or burn our house down. We have a constant ebb and flow of sensual energy that flows through our heavenly curves and radiates outward. Some women may not know it, or have not "tapped" into it yet, but believe me it's there.

Knowledge & Power

Lord Shiva & Quetzalcoatl

Recurrent themes seem to suggest that serpents represented great knowledge and a divine sexual power. In ancient Rome, young women took gifts of barley cake to the sacred serpent to assure their own reproductive powers and the fertility of the earth. In Hindu belief, Lord Shiva, the auspicious one, wears snakes as a garland around his neck. Symbolizing wisdom and eternity. Quetzalcoātl, the feathered serpent, was worshiped by the Aztecs, Toltecs and other Mesoamerica tribes. He was the creator and destroyer of various world periods. He was also the god of wind, water and fertility. The existence of his worship can be seen throughout Central and parts of South America, where serpent motifs are frequent. Many native tribes of North America also worshiped the snake. Navajo, Hopi, Natchez, Zuni are just a few who have a long history with snakes.

A Nagini Princess

We are maidens. Young and fair. In Indian myth, Nāga and Nāgini were human-snake hybrids, specifically the King Cobra, who lived in jewel-encrusted underground or underwater paradises and who had been perpetually at war with Garuda, the sun god. They have continued to inspire legends and stories throughout thousands of years, but it is the women of this race, who have captured the imagination the most. These serpent princesses were said to be strikingly beautiful and able to turn at will, into a cobra or half-snake/half-human form. A precious gem was said to be embedded in their skull which gave them magical powers.

A fierce guardian and protector

We are mothers. The moment a child is born, so is a mother is born. She never existed before, she was only a women. Mothers are held in the highest esteem. "God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers." is my favorite quote from a Jewish proverb.

A farmer in India, while tilling his field, manages to kill a nest of young serpents. The mother, on her return, sees the dead snakes and becomes furious. She bites the farmer, his wife and their children in their sleep, killing them all. The farmer's eldest daughter, already married and living out of town takes some time for the mother serpent to get to. When she finally arrives, she finds the daughter in the middle of worshiping an image of a snake, asking for forgiveness for mistakes made by her family. Seeing this, the mother snake feel sorry for what she did and left her in peace. The daughter's prayers were so powerful her family was brought back to life. This was the beginning of Nag Panchami, an annual Hindu festival in which snakes are venerated and worshiped by hundreds of people, seeking protection from their wrath. Snakes are bathed in milk and fields are forbidden to be plowed. There are also many other variations to the origins of Nag Panchami.

Unfortunately, many around the world do not have the same respect and love for mothers. By the same token, there are many mothers out there who do not understand what a big responsibility they have and, in my opinion, should not be mothers.

We are lovers. Ever the hopeless-romantics, we love hard and hurt deep. As some would say, "A whole women's life is a history of her affections." Stories of magical serpents and love span around the globe. After all, except for Antarctica, they are found on every continent. The Chinese tell the legend of, "Lady White Snake". A cautionary tale of love between a mortal man and a snake woman. There are many different endings and variations to the story but it's popularity has grown throughout the years. Movies, books, comics and even a Chinese opera have all told the tale. Personally, I would love to see the opera! Read more about her story here.

We are healers... and poisoners. While a woman, with all her compassion, affection, love, patience and kindness, can also be cunning, spiteful and vindictive. "Hell hath no fury, like a women scorned." -William Congreve. Another one of my favorites, hehe. Snakes were also thought to be sneaky, spiteful, even cunning. It's natural for most people to think of snakes as poisonous. Truth is only about 10 percent of snakes worldwide are actually poisonous. Their venom has the power to poison or heal, like a woman's.

"Cobra Wine, anyone?"

In Asian countries such as, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia, drinking the blood and bile of a snake, particularly the cobra, is believed to increase sexual virility. The blood is usually mixed with some type of liquor. While not commonly thought of as food in most cultures, in some cultures the consumption of snake is acceptable or even considered a delicacy, prized for it's pharmaceutical effect of warming the heart. The liver is especially sought after. In some Asian countries, the use of snakes in alcohol is also acceptable. The snake or snakes is usually left to steep in a jar or container of alcohol. It is claimed to make the liquor stronger and therefore more expensive. One example is the Habu snake, used in some Okinawan liquor called Awamori, also known as "Habu sake".

Snake blood and bile

Snake wine is an alcoholic beverage produced by infusing whole snakes in rice wine or grain alcohol. The drink was first recorded to have been consumed in China during the Western Zhou dynasty.

On the other side of the spectrum, to Westerners, snake consumption is not as accepted. Only thought as necessary to survival.

Unfortunately there aren't any stories or myths about snakes in Hawaiian culture as we do not have snakes on our islands. Although we do tell tales of Mo'o or lizards, who ironically, were mostly women. I will definitely write about those legends soon!

Throughout the history of mankind, snakes have been the familiars of women. Mysterious, beautiful and sensual. Maidens and mothers. Poisoners and healers. Clever and wise. Tempting and dangerous. Sneaky and terrifying. Familiar yet exotic. Whether it be the hypnotic way we move or the sensual outline of our curves. Our skin cool like water and our fiery tongues. Or perhaps it's just the ability we have to terrify men. Whatever the case, snakes don't scare women, because they are women. (figuratively)

Best Hair Tips From Around The World

You'll notice that I am very much inspired by InStyle magazine. I absolutely love InStyle! I try my best though, to add my own thoughts, experiences and knowledge to each post.

Aside from my love of makeup, I am always looking for better, healthier, simpler and lets be honest, cheaper ways to style and care for my hair.

"Really, Mom? Coconut husk!"

I have struggled to love my natural hair my whole life and still do today. I was always afraid of being called "bush-wacked" in school (kids can be so mean!). I inherited my mom's hair, which is naturally curly, frizzy and hard to grow. My mom and I would joke that we had "coconut husk" hair, lol! Growing up I my mom and I would chemically relax, use large velcro rollers (which work quite well), blow-dry and even use the household iron for our hair. Now for me, blow-drying was a struggle. My hair is so thick, my arms would tire quickly and I'd end up hot, sweaty and frustrated with only half my hair straightened. I later discovered the straightening iron and I've been using it ever since.

However, as we all know heat is not always our hairs best friend, because of this I am in a constant tug-o-war. On one end I'm not completely comfortable with my natural hair so I straighten, which I like, but that weakens and breaks the ends. Combined with my very slow hair growth-rate, it ends up taking a very long time to get my hair to grow out! By the time my hair gets to my bra strap, I'm fed up and end up chopping it all off and the vicious cycle starts over. It's frustrating.

So in light of my constant search, I find lots of amazing tips, tricks and articles that I'd love to share! What I love most about most of the tips in this post, is the fact that they are natural ingredients, some of which you can find in your own kitchen or local supermarket. The list is a bit long as we travel around the world but here we go....

Colombia - Avocado Hair Mask

Combine 2 egg whites with half a mashed-up avocado. Apply mixture to hair and leave for 15 minutes. Wash and condition normally. It's fast, inexpensive and a natural way to keep hair silky smooth.

Brazil - Coconut Hair Cocktail

Once a week, apply a cocoa-butter treatment mask to hair and let sit for half an hour, then rinse with coconut water. The combination leaves hair soft and incredible moisturized. Not to mention you'll smell delicious!

Argentina - Hydrate with Aloe Vera

Women in Argentina associate long hair with sensuality and glamour. To maintain a healthy scalp, add moisture and keep strands long, apply aloe vera directly to your scalp or add it to your favorite shampoo.

Guyana - Sardines for Shiny Hair

If you don't already love sardines, it may be hard to start enjoying but you're in luck! Trout, herring, albacore tuna, mahi mahi, swordfish and salmon are all excellent sources for omega-3 fatty acids. Adding fish to your diet will help stimulate hair growth and keep your locks shiny and radiant. Still can't bring yourself to eat fish, not to worry, omega-3 is also found in walnuts, flaxseed, cauliflower and cooked soybeans!

Mexico - Gelatin Hair Mask

South of the border they fight frizz with a blend of 1tbsp. of unflavored gelatin, 1 cup of water and 1 tsp. of cider vinegar. Massage the gel-like mixture through shampooed hair, leave in for 5 minutes, then rinse. It's a practice passed down through generations.

Jamaica - Ditch the Blow Dryer

In the dead of summer using a blow dryer can feel like a blowtorch to your head. Take a cue from the ladies of Jamaica and use rollers! After shampooing and conditioning, set hair with rollers and air dry. You'll end up with lush, bouncy, flowing curls minus the heat stroke.

Puerto Rico - Work With Your Hair

"The island is humid and windy and women here spend a lot of time at the beach", says stylist Elizabeth Rosado. "Instead of fighting their natural texture, we help them embrace it with soft layers." Choose long, face flattering layers like Jennifer Lopez.

Canada - Cold Rinse

The dry, harsh weather in Canada can make hair thirsty and unruly. To combat this, try an "Arctic Rinse". After taking a shower, rinse your hair with cold water. This instantly seals your cuticles, closing up the shaft so it reflects natural light easier. Your hair will have optimal shine and radiance!

Spain - Lived in Highlights

When it comes to hair, women in Spain have a "less is more" approach. Instead of drastic changes that require regular touch-ups, they opt for sunny highlights with an uneven starting point so that regrowth isn't as noticeable.

Ireland - Slide Cutting

Irish women are prone to pouffy hair do to it's naturally course and kinky texture. To help with this, these women ask their stylist for the "slide-cutting" technique. This is used to remove the bulk of the hair without losing the line of cut. It creates softness and movement.

Scotland - Tea Rinse

A chamomile tea rinse keeps blonde hair from fading. Simply boil the flowers for a few minutes, cool and strain. Then spritz the mixture on dry hair.

England - Fight the Frizz

Due to the wet and foggy climate, British girls have a real challenge on their hands when it comes to hair. Before running out the door, rub some anti-frizz serum through your hair and never leave the house without anti-humidity hairspray. You never know when the weather will turn foul!

France - Hydrate while you sleep

The lovely ladies of France know a thing or two about beauty sleep. Overnight treatments are very popular here. To add moisture many women will rub shea butter cream on their scalp before a shampoo. Another nighttime ritual, vitamins. Take herbal supplements to nourish hair from the inside out.

Germany - Oktoberfest Rinse

If there is any country who knows beer, it's Germany. But aside from the obvious Oktoberfest, beer is also used as a hair rinse. After shampooing, pour flat, warm beer on your hair and work through. Rinse with lukewarm water. Or you can combine half a liter of beer and warm water in a spray bottle. Spritz hair and leave on for 20 minutes then rinse. Do this weekly to keep strands strong and glossy.

Italy - The Olive Oil Hair Diet

Like a secret family recipe, olive oil has been a passed down from generation to generation in Italy in some families. Take a tablespoon of olive oil and comb through your hair. Doing this once a week will keep your strands nourished, conditioned and improve elasticity. It's also a great way to help fight frizz!

Czech Republic- Pump Up the Volume

Czech women tend to have fine hair so it's all about volume. A national popular choice is the Kérastase Volumactive line. From the shampoo to the styling products, they all give fool proof body.

Romania - Sweeten your Conditioner

To boost highlights like a Romanian, add 1tbsp of honey to your favorite conditioner. Your highlights will shimmer!

South Africa - Whirl your Hair Straight

Before the days of chemical relaxers and flatirons, South African women used a process known as whirling to straighten their hair. To achieve this, wrap wet hair tightly around your scalp and place a stocking over your head to hold it place. Use a blow-dryer to remove 80 percent of the moisture, then remove the stocking and wrap hair in the other direction. Dry hair completely. Take the stocking off and brush out, your hair should be straight as a board.

Egypt - Castor Oil Cocktail

"In Cairo, where my family is from, a popular hair treatment is castor oil mixed with crushed garlic," says N.Y.C colorist Rita Hazan. "Add a drop of lavender essential oils to the combination and apply to dry hair, leave overnight. Rinse in the morning and you'll have lush, hydrated hair." Castor oil also promotes hair growth! You can also combine with almond oil to give it a sweet smell.

India - Amla Oil Cocktail

If there is any country that could boast having the most gorgeous and abundant hair, it would be hands down, India. With over a billion people, there are many tricks to keeping hair healthy. One of which is Amla oil. Apply a small amount of oil onto hair, massage scalp and comb through. Leave on for 20 minutes then rinse. You could also wrap your hair with a warm towel and leave on for a half and hour then rinse. Your hair will shine like never before!

Greece - Sun and Sand Protection

Before hitting the beach, Greek women use olive oil to slick their hair back into a ponytail. This protects against dehydration from the sun and salt water.

United Arab Emirates - Undercover Glamour

Although many women there wear the traditional abaya's that cover their hair, they still visit salon's regularly for blowouts and styling. Now that's a commitment to fashion I can appreciate! Having your hair covered, with a hat, scarf or abaya will help shield you from the sun and air pollutants. It's also a great way to make a fashion statement, keep your blow-outs lasting longer and maintain the overall health of your hair.

Rather than racing to wash their hair after a swim at the beach, Aussie gals use the piecey texture that salt water provides to create tousled waves. What do you expect of a country completely surrounded by the ocean?! No ocean nearby? Grab a spray bottle, add a few teaspoons of course sea salt, a few drops of your favorite essential oil and fill with warm water. Shake and spray onto hair and braid loosely. When hair dries, take out the braid and comb with your fingers for instant beach hair!

Thailand - Coconut Milk Shampoo

A local recipe that's been used for years is coconut milk shampoo. Simply grate and squeeze the coconut to get the milk, which you heat on the stove until the oil separates. Spoon out the oil and let cool before applying to your hair as shampoo. It provides moisture, softness and shine.

Vietnam - Lush Lotus Treatment

Prevent breakage with a boket, or lotus tree treatment. The lotus, which grows in Southeast Asia, is the secret to strong shiny hair. For a homemade remedy, steep the leaves and use the liquid as a cleanser. Then grind the pods to a thick, buttery consistency and use as a conditioner.

Japan - Camellia Oil &Wooden Comb

Japanese women throughout the centuries have gone through numerous hairstyles, from the elaborate updos to long and straight to the crazy colors and styles you see today. An ancient Geisha secret was to keep their wooden comb in a jar of camellia oil then comb hair until smooth and silky. Those ladies knew what they were doing! It is much better to comb through tangles and wet hair than to use a synthetic brush. You could also massage your scalp with camellia oil using your fingertips for 10 minutes or apply oil to hair generously and wrap with a warm towel for 20 minutes. Rinse and condition.

China - Fruit Cocktail

A favorite of the Chinese ladies was the Chinese Honey Locust fruit. Boil the fruit of the honey locust tree, when cooled, rub the fruit between hands to produce a perfumed lather and shampoo hair. When ready to comb hair, use a wooden comb that's been soaking in Pomelo seed juice to make hair smooth and silky. An Asian market or Chinese herbal shop is your best bet to finding these exotic fruit.

Hawaii - Awapuhi Wash

For centuries, Hawaiian's have used the awapuhi, or ginger flower, to moisturize hair and skin. This is a secret that I told from my aunties while growing up. Simply take the flower and massage till a liquid is produced, apply to hair and wash. Rinse with cool water.

Tahiti - Tiare Monoi

As much as they are recognized your their sensuality and fast hip-shaking. Tahitians are also known for their beautiful, golden skin and hair. Not only does it help moisturize and soften but monoi has been used for years to protect from the effects of sun, wind and sea salt. Use as a pre-shampoo oil treatment or add a few drops to your next hot bath.

Bollywood Love

It's no secret that I love Bollywood....well, that's not entirely true. I love India. In every way. Whenever I feel down or mad I'll put on some Indian music, watch a Bollywood movie, google pictures, visit the only India market in Hawaii, or pick up some lunch with my sisters at the Taj Mahal Cafe. It is something that truly makes me happy and lifts my spirit.

Growing up I took an interest in many cultures aside from my own. Mexico, Egypt, Native American tribes, Japan and much more but strangely, never India. The closest I had ever come to the Indian culture were my 2 Indian math/science teachers in high school and even then, I was not interested. It was in Hilo, Hawaii for the Merrie Monarch Festival that I was shown the Bollywood movie "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" by my Aunty and cousin. It was very similar to the musicals I grew up watching so I immediately took a liking. The movie was funny, cheeky, emotional and filled with music. I cried like a baby at the end. Since then, I wanted more. I wanted to know everything about Bollywood and India. So I went out there and searched for everything I could find, bought books, tried the food, rented the movies, googled for pictures, I even went to "Bollywood Nights" to try and make friends.

Through my efforts, I have learned so much and it is something that I treasure. I went to a few more Bollywood nights, a Diwali festival and even a Krishna Temple. I found my favorite Indian food dishes, ordered my own sari, salwar kameez & lehenga choli from India. I started a substancial collection of Bollywood movies and I've made some good friends as well. One of those friends is getting married in October! My first Indian wedding that I am invited to...and I won't be able to make it. I am still recovering from this.

I am fortunate that my youngest sister shares the same love and enthusiasm as I do. She has been by my side the entire time, sharing the experiences and memories with me. I miss that.

I hope to one day visit this beautiful country and experience it first hand for myself. In fact, before even considering moving to Arizona, I was planning a trip to India. It didn't quite work out the way I planned but that has not deterred me. I will make it there one day.

So, don't be surprised with all the Indian/Bollywood love I show here. There will be lots of it and hopefully there are other's out there who share the same love and zest for India as I do.

A year ago today I left home for the first time. Ideally that's when I should have started this blog. You know, to record and document every thing, every feeling and every moment that passed. That would've been optimal and normally this would've been the outcome of my procrastination but as it turns out, I had no idea that you could blog or should I say that I could blog. So here we are, my very first post a year later.

Every few weeks or so we have a party at our house. The amount of new people I am constantly meeting is amazing to me. I mean, come on...I'm from an island! Everyone knows someone who is someone's aunty's, friend's, cousin's, second nephew, once removed. I realize that formula might not be that bad but the point is, you could be related. A potentially huge problem when you're dating back home by the way. All I have to say is know your genealogy. Marrying your cousin is awkward. (oh yeah, it's happened!) Anyways, when meeting someone at these parties for the first time our conversation usually goes something like this.

"Hi, I'm so and so..."

"Hi, I'm Kanani."

"Ka...ne....? Sorry."

"Kanani. I know it's different. It's ok, I won't be offended if you don't remember."

"That's a nice name, I've never heard it before. What is it?"

"Aww thanks, it's Hawaiian."

"Hawaiian?! That's so cool. Are you visiting?"

"No, I live here."

"WHY WOULD YOU MOVE TO ARIZONA FROM HAWAII?!"

From there I would continue onto what has become an almost script-like explanation of my journey from Hawaii to Arizona. I love talking about where I'm from and I'm so flattered to hear how much people love Hawaii. How much they want to sit on the beach and watch the sunset. It makes me realize all over again how amazing it was to grow up where I did. However, it also makes me see how unique I am as well. Everyday I find something that I do different from most others. Before moving here, I ate white rice everyday with every meal. That's now been replaced with Mexican rice, which is so 'ono! (Hawaiian for delicious!). I call flip-flops, "slippers". I had to get into the habit of wearing shoes in the house, a big no-no back home. My friends think it's funny how I say, "stomach" or "cold". I wear socks with my slippers and the list goes on! My boyfriend gets a kick out of my "poor" English. I actually thought I spoke very well but apparently I still can't kick my pigeon dialect.

Although I laugh about it now, I struggled with it in the beginning. As anyone would I think. I pressured myself into trying to fit in, when I really should have celebrated my differences. I feel so much more comfortable in my own skin now than before and with no family or close friends around, I really had to learn how to stand on m own and feel confident. Something I don't think I could have experienced if I didn't leave the comfort and safety of home. So why did I leave? Well, it wasn't easy. Growing up I always said I was never going to leave Hawaii. I was gonna get married, raise kids and be set for life. I was pretty stubborn about it but after a few disappointing events, I needed something different. Then I met someone, well...I got back in touch with someone and he completely changed my world for the better. So what were these turn of events and who changed my life, you say?... We'll save that one for another post (It's quite an interesting story).

Yes, I miss my family terribly. I miss my friends, I miss dancing hula, I miss my home but I know that everything will be ok. I know that I am doing something wonderful for myself. If you have the chance to travel and experience something new, don't hesitate to try! The change and growth you see in yourself is incredible. I am growing and learning in ways I never could have done if I didn't get out there in the world. I'm happy I made the decision to leave and I'm sharing Hawaii everywhere I go.

10 Ways to Look More Polished

Since we are already on the subject of looking professional, especially at work, I found an old article from InStyle magazine that I saved and thought I'd share it with you all! I've added and changed a few things from the original article but I hope you enjoy.

Manage your Mani/Pedi

Whether it's from the constant tapping on keyboards, your blackberry or gardening. Having chipped, dirty nails is a sure fire way to look lazy. Mani/Pedi's can cost anywhere from $15 and up. If you choose to color your nails, bring your own nail polish. It's a lot more sanitary! While most salon's don't charge for nail polish, a French manicures will usually cost you a few more bucks.. If you can't afford to splurge on Mani/Pedi's in salons, have a girls night and paint each others nails! Pedicures....optional.

Don't Forget your Signature Scent

Smell is the strongest sense associated with a memory. I think everyone will agree. Every time I smell Tres Flores and shoe polish I think of my papa immediately. It takes me back to childhood. So while you're out there making yourself unforgettable to others, (in a good way, I hope!) why not wear your signature perfume?!

Skip the Scrunchie

The next time you pull your hair into a pony tail, instead of reaching for the same hair tie or scrunchie, why not use a beautiful faux tortoise barrette and channel some Jackie Kennedy? Remember to keep it classic and simple. What's that? You say you have a niece that just joined the Cheerleading squad? Perfect. Give your scrunchie's to her.

Lose the Shine

When makeup artists use the word "polished" they don't mean oily. They mean a clean, finished look that is neither dewy or too powdered. If there's one makeup product to splurge on, it's your foundation. M.A.C, NARS, Makeup Forever and many other brands have wonderful choices for all skin types. Don't hesitate to ask any makeup artist, they should be able to help you. If you have oily skin like I do. Use a primer before applying foundation, "set" your foundation with a good powder and carry oil-absorbing sheets to help soak up any oil throughout the day. Don't have any oil-absorbing sheets? Use the toilet seat sanitary covers, they work just as well!

Practice your Posture

You don't need to be erect and stiff to be taken seriously. In fact, I think if you walk around like that, you look silly. The goal is to be poised and natural. Try standing with your feet 4 to 6 inches apart, then imagine a balloon tied to the top of your head pulling everything up. A good way to limber up those back muscles in to lay on the floor and make a "snow angel" motion with your hands. I am so guilty of bad posture! So don't feel like your the only one.

Find Your Beauty Routine

Find a good go-to eye and lip combo. You want colors that are pretty, modern and that compliment your features. Try to stay away from anything too trendy. Save that for the club! A great way to shave off a few minutes in your daily routine is to find makeup products that do double-duty. I personally love, love, love Benefits cosmetics! They have lip/cheek stains that look beautiful and they come in a travel-size so you can throw them in your purse and touch-up your face throughout the day!

Plan Ahead

Everyone nowadays is busy, but don't make that an excuse for grown-out roots, split-ends and unruly brows. Put a little money aside and schedule an appointment once a month for professional services. This helps you get organized, nab the most convenient times for you and avoid those days your favorite stylist goes on vacation. Get your hair waxed, colored and cut and you'll not only look more put together but you'll feel better! When you feel good, you look good!

Travel-size

Your daily routine can wreck havoc on your hair. The commute to work or school, rain, sun, wind, humidity or that freak dust storm (we seem to having lots of those in Phoenix!) can ruin anyone's hairdo. Keep travel-sized hair tools and products with you for quick touch-ups. Now I'm not saying you should carry around a blow-dryer in your purse, unless you want to, but if you have a desk or locker at work/school why not keep an extra one in there?

Wake Up In Time To Get Ready

Now... I am the worst at waking up in the morning. Unless it's something I really can't wait for, I'm a total grump. In a perfect world, we'd all be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at the start of the day but alas, we're not. To help with the early mornings, try to wake up with positive thoughts. Take a cue from the Dalai Lama, who reflects for a few minutes, on all the positive things he is blessed with. Don't hit the snooze button either. Take time in the morning hours to read, eat a delicious breakfast, excercise, drink a cup a freshly brewed coffee. When you think about it, rising early is more beneficial!

COLORS

Admit it, not everyone can pull off certain colors. Or maybe you've already found that color that others complement you on but don't want to wear it. Whether it be your skin-tone, features, hair color, eye color etc...there are colors that will complement you and make you look even more fabulous! After high school I was really into Metal and wore black...all the time. I hated bright colors. Eventually I grew out of that and started experimenting with different colors. I found that people loved when I wore red and blue, it looked good on me! Now my boyfriend thinks the colors I pick are too bright! The point is, if you're not quite comfortable wearing color yet, try a just a pop of color! A purse, your shoes, a funky eye shadow or bright lipstick. Just remember you want it to complement you. Be fearless! As Carson Kressley of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy says, "Don't be afraid of color, Lord knows I'm not!"

A modern girl's guide to business attire and grooming

Sweaty palms, anxiety, nervousness, that knot in your gut.....you know what I'm talking about. Yes, the job interview. There are few things in life that make me as anxious as preparing and waiting for that day. This is definitely not my strength. I'm used to auditioning. Some stage makeup, flowers in my hair, a bathing suit top and pareu (sarong) bottom and basically "show me what you got". Dancing around trying to outdo the girl next to you in front of a group of people who just watch. That, I could see being nervous about! I could emcee an hour long hula show at Ala Moana Shopping Center if I needed to. There's just something about being one on one that freaks me out!

"Not appropriate? I wore my best bra!"

So in light of my upcoming interview as a bank teller. I have done some searching for appropriate business attire, since clearly my coconut bra will not do. Personally, I just think they haven't given it a chance. Now ladies don't confuse club attire with business attire, and just because that juicy couture velour track suit cost an arm and a leg does not mean it's appropriate for work!

Remember that every work place is different and some business' are more lenient than others. If in doubt, check first.

The Do's & Don'ts!

Do shop for basics that you can mix 'n match. A tailored business suit, pencil skirts, dress pants and crisp collared shirts in basic colors such as black, grey, navy blue, white and beige are a good start to building your work wardrobe.

Don't wear jeans, baggy clothes, sweat pants, short-shorts, shoulder-bearing tops, anything see-through or anything that bears your midriff.

Do buy comfortable shoes that match well with your clothing. Spiked heels, slippers or sandals are usually not appropriate. Check with your company's dress code if in doubt. Closed-toed and covered heels are always welcome.

Don't pile on the jewelry! Nice diamond or pearl stud earrings are acceptable in business settings. Nose, tongue or any other type of facial jewelry are almost never allowed.

Do cover any visible tattoos. (I actually have tattoos on my wrist and one behind my left ear. I didn't take into consideration how much this would affect me in my later years. I have to cover them all the time. Just something to think about if you're thinking of getting inked.)

Don't show up wrinkled! Nothing looks worse than someone who is wrinkled at work. If you don't have time to iron, throw your clothes in the dryer for 20 minutes. It won't completely get rid of the wrinkles but it will "relax" them.

Do keep hair clean, neat and out of your face. If you are thinking of dyeing your hair something funky, make sure it is allowed by your management.

Don't show the girls! Yes, I mean boobies. I mean if you have 'em, great! At work, not the time to let 'em hang loose.

Do keep fingernails & toenails clean and maintained. Not only will you look nice and polished but you don't have to worry about someone staring at that dirt under your nail.

Don't overdo it with the perfume. Yes we all want to smell loverly (Yes, I meant to say loverly. Yes, I know it's not a word) but we don't want anyone to leave our presence nauseous.

Camilla Belle, fresh-faced & beautiful

Do have fresh and clean makeup. Even if you're not the makeup type of girl. Wearing mascara and lipstick can still give you that "made up" look without a full face of makeup.

Don't bring in that huge leather black bad into work. Keep it simple with a small purse or work handbag. It's also a good idea to keep it neutral colors. Yes, your purple animal print hobo bag will have to stay home.

Do change up your wardrobe with beautiful dresses. Just remember to keep it classy. Unless you can cover up with a nice cardigan or jacket, anything strapless, showing cleavage or your bare back is a no-no.

Don't let the world know what kind of panties you are wearing! Visible underwear is a HUGE fashion faux-pas, no matter what setting. Seamless underwear and a slip are essential to any woman's closet.

Do smile!! A smile is the perfect accessory to any outfit.

These are pretty standard rules for most business'. I don't necessarily agree with them, in fact I've broken many of my own tips that I'm offering! However it is important to dress appropriately. "Time and Place", as my high school teacher constantly reminded us. I've gone from previously working with a coconut bra and Tahitian skirt, to M.A.C cosmetics, where they allow visible tattoo's and piercings, to (hopefully) a career as a banker where my skirt can't be more than 2 inches higher than my knees! Hopefully this has helped someone as it helped me.
