Take note:  a co-ed baby shower involves a different kind of planning than your typical “women only” event.  Not that different is a bad thing – you can still expect to have tons of fun, save for the girly and frilly decorations and invitations. A baby shower isn’t a baby shower, until you have played at least one fun and entertaining game!  While some moms-to-be scoff at the idea of embarrassing games (like how many toilet paper squares will fit around her belly) there are some games that everyone can enjoy – without teasing the mom-to-be!  The classic game of Pictionary is just that – with very few items needed this game is basically free to play and will get everyone involved on your list.

What do you need?  Well you can either get an easel, a large pad of drawing paper and a marker from a craft store (this will give the mom something to take home for memories) or you can use an erasable whiteboard and markers from an office supply store.  Then head over to our Baby Pictionary word list and read the rules, gather some ideas for words or print up our free Pictionary word list.

Of course, you’ll need some door prizes for the winning team.  We suggest giving the same item to everyone on the winning team, such as pretty baby shower candles for them to remember the day by!

I recently heard about gender reveal parties after Erica and I were brainstorming up baby shower ideas (for our articles, no one in the office is pregnant…yet).  So after some extensive research, I learned everything there is to know about a gender reveal party.  I think it’s a great way to announce the sex of your baby to friends and family, and even for the new parents to find out too:  ask the ultrasound technician to seal the picture in an envelope, then give it to a baker and ask for a cake or cupcakes to be dyed pink or blue and covered with frosting – or those delicious looking cookies in the picture. I think it’s a bit more challenging to come up with themes for a baby gender reveal party.  At least ones completely specific to the gender reveal idea.  Below I’ve listed a few ideas that I found online (Pinterest is a great help!) and one other the girls and I came up with ourselves.

Girl vs. Boy Theme – A traditional blue and pink color palette seems to be the most popular.  Invite guests to pick a “team” and wear the color to show support! Hand out pins (something even cuter I found was lips and mustaches on sticks!), decorate desserts in pink or blue, and take votes on the baby’s sex.

What’s it Gonna Bee? – I particularly like this theme the best, especially because we have such a great selection of baby shower favors that you can coordinate with it!  Stick with a bumblebee-inspired color scheme of black and yellow, and give favors like our personalized honey jars or “Sweet as Can Bee” honey pots or honey-scented beehive candles.

Whooo Wants to Know? – I love owls! Our Baby Owl Canvas Signature Guest Book will be the perfect keepsake for the mommy and daddy-to-be, and our blue or pink owl candles will be an adorable gift for your guests.

Baby Mystery/Scavenger Hunt – This will be especially fun if you’re expecting a lot of kids to attend. Instead of a murder mystery party, create clues or a scavenger hunt to lead guests to the gender of the baby.  An easier alternative is something similar to an egg hunt, where one egg will hold the gender of the baby.

Zebra Photo Frame Baby Shower Favors

1. Animal Prints – If the mommy to be is planning to decorate the nursery in baby animals, jungle theme, King of the Jungle, or any of the variations of animals – think

out of the box and celebrate with a grown up version of the theme.  While giving the mom to be a stuffed animal may be appropriate for her baby, giving your guests a stuffed animal as their favor is not.  Decorations could include decoupaged vases in wild animal prints, marble zebra brownies, tortoise shell candles, gem confetti in the colors of animals (think black and clear for zebras or gold, brown and black for cheetahs, yellow and white for a giraffe).  Give out fun and functional favors such as these zebra print photo frames (on left), animal inspired lip gloss, or a printed compact mirror.

The Book Party - use children’s books as centerpieces and as a guide to your decor and food for this party.  For example, prop up “Green Eggs and Ham” next to Deviled eggs tinted with green filling and sides of ham.  The book Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs can be perched next to a bowl of mini meatballs, Goodnight Moon the popular bedtime story with children can be served with mini moon pies.  The possibilities are endless!  Go to your local library or bookstore and check out what great stories can be incorporated into the food.  Make sure to get a cake in the shape of books and ask your guests to donate a book to the wishing well.  Stack books in the center of the tables as centerpieces.  For favors, I would suggest our Over the Moon Vintage Moon Bookmarks – they look like miniature books plus they have a useful bookmark inside! This is a great gender neutral theme.

4. “A Star Is Born” Hollywood Theme – Glamorous and charming, this theme can be played up for a boy or a girl.  Think Hollywood inspired star decor, stars, cameras, feathers, fans, movie reels, “special delivery” storks, glitter covered baby bottles or pacifiers can be strung up, movie ticket invitations, a “coming soon” preview film (if you’re handy with video editing) can even be shown to your guests as entertainment.  And like every good movie premier, treat your guests like royalty with swag bags – give them boxes of popcorn, star themed wine stoppers, or little clipboard shaped photo frames.

5.  “Feathering The Nest” – Vintage bird or owl themed shower is perfect for a boy or a girl.  This is perfect for spring, summer and outdoor soirees.  Little wooden birds or owls can line the tables as centerpieces.  You can cut banners into the shape of the animal of your choice and hand them from trees or around the tables.  Birds nests can serve as candy dishes or flower holders.  A birdcage can serve as a card holder or wishing well.  Rustic feeling, with this theme you can incorporate a lot of natural elements such as flowers, twigs, antique glasses, and it can be mixed with any color scheme for a boy or a girl.

Centerpieces - Fill up large vases with buttons of all shapes and sizes, and tie the tops with big bows.  You can use remaining buttons to sprinkle on your table settings.

Games - Fill a jar with buttons, and have guests guess how many.  Winner gets a door prize!  You can also play bingo with buttons as chips.  Fun!

Food - Decorate cookies, cupcakes and your cake to look like buttons.  They’ll be too cute to eat!

If you’re sticking to a particular color scheme, like blue or pink, try to find buttons in different shades of the color.  But I love the mixing and matching of different pastel colors, like the ones on the place card frame mentioned above.  It works for both a boy and a girl!  I know if I ever have to host a baby shower, this theme will definitely be considered.

So I’ll admit:  I’ve been a little stumped on blog ideas for Little Things Baby.  While searching the internet for something interesting today, I came across something I’ve never heard of before:  a fruit stroller!  Now I’ve seen people cut the watermelon in half and fill it up with fruit, but I was completely impressed by this!  I have to say, I’m also a little upset I didn’t come across it sooner.  We just had a baby sprinkle for my sister this past weekend!  Oh well, I guess I’ll have to create one the next time someone gets pregnant.  Anyway, here’s how to make one:

Ingredients
- Watermelon (look for one in a more oval shape)
- Oranges
- Grapes
- Any other fresh fruit you prefer
- Toothpicks or wooden skewers
- You may also want to wear an apron; Alecia has made one and says the watermelon tends to spray when you hollow it out.

1.  Wash & dry the watermelon, then use permanent marker to draw the outline of a stroller on it.  Draw a large arch on one half of the longer side of the watermelon.  Instead of closing it with a line, draw humps (it reminds me of a curtain).

2.  Cut out the stroller using a sharp knife.  Some people like to create a handle for the stroller using this extra piece of watermelon.  It is optional.

3.  Hollow out the watermelon with a melon baller or spoon (judging by the size of most melon ballers, you’re probably better off using the spoon).  Save the fruit you hollowed!

4.  Cut the handle out of the extra piece of watermelon if you choose and attach it using skewers (not toothpicks, as the handle is heavy).  Cut four thin slices from an orange and attach them with toothpicks as wheels.  Place a grape on the edge of each toothpick in the center of each wheel.

5.  Slice up the rest of your fruit and any edible watermelon you have left over and fill it up!  You can even take an orange or mango and draw a sleeping baby face on it, so it looks like there is a baby inside!

I wish I would have had time to actually make a fruit stroller and take pictures for a better how-to, but I unfortunately blogged shortly after learning about a fruit stroller.  I will try to get around to making one and posting an article on our baby shower favors website featuring the pictures.
