The first guest comic comes from the fabulous-wearer-of-fabulous-boots, Jennie Breeden! Jennie is the creator of The Devil’s Panties webcomic, a hilarious journal comic that doesn’t usually involve Satanic porn. Usually.

Jennie is a big reason why I got into indy publishing and, eventually, webcomics. Waaaay back in 2006, James and I attended the Webcomics 103 panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Before that panel, all my publishing aspirations seemed unattainable, but that was because I saw only one path to achieving them. Jennie made me see a different path, a path less dependent on traditional publishing. Her inspiration led me to get a small press table at SDCC 2007, where the first Little Vampires book premiered.

She continues to be an inspiration to this day, not just with her work but with her work ethic. You think I appear at a lot of conventions? Check out Jennie’s schedule.

I have been having so much fun drawing comics based on the hilarious ideas you all submitted to the Top Hat of Random Topics. But I must leave the drawing board so I can appear at two wonderful conventions!

Phoenix Comicon and Denver Comicon are back-to-back, so James and I are hitting the road for a longer stretch of time than usual. Our wonderfulwonderfulwonderful artist friends will be drawing Little Vampire guest comics for you all while we’re away. I wish I could show you each of the guest strips now because they are so awesome! I know you’ll love them . . . just don’t love them too much, you’ll give me a complex.

The Pit and the Pastry Cutter happens to be one of Elsa’s favorite classic movies. She usually watches it as a double feature with The Fall of the House of Biscuit.

This strip is an homage to the movie poster for The Pit and the Pendulum, which starred Vincent Price. Classic spooky suspense and horror film! The only thing it’s missing is monsters. The idea for the comic came from “Pillsbury Doughboy” and “pastry cutter,” the two ideas I pulled from the Top Hat of Random Topics. I could not have been more lucky pulling those two topics on the same day, let me tell you. Thanks to Helen T and Carl Glassmeyer for contributing these ideas to the hat!

Today’s comic is based on “Waxed Mustache” and “Jousting,” the two topics I pulled from the Top Hat of Random Topics. Thanks to Blake Rothwell and Rachael Faught for contributing these ideas to the hat. Pulling these topics together gave me the inspiration to take the Little Vampires into a more surreal direction. Blake, do NOT actually joust with you mustache, fabulous as it is.

Like most monster fans, I was sad to hear about the passing of the stop-motion animation genius Ray Harryhausen. I don’t work in film or sculpture, but Harryhausen was still an influence and inspiration. He gave monsters a life that I can only try to imitate.
