This week we’re featuring a piece which sort of masterfully illustrates what the Raving Poets are about. Kathy Fisher explores the various definitions of the word “stroke”. In a virtuoso performance, bassist Mark Kozub lays down an accompaniment that will make your jaw drop. Listen to how this develops musically. Listen to how Fishy spoons back into the riff and how the performance reaches a synergy that neither alone could have accomplished. In a lot of ways this is exactly what the Raving Poets aim to achieve by combining the spoken word and music.

This recording is particularly interesting. Phil asked for a predominant organ sound. So that’s Trofimuk that you hear grinding the organ. Now let’s add to that. Let’s add Mark Kozub re-entering the earth’s atmosphere at an insanely oblique angle. And let’s mash that together with some demanding beats and scratches off of the beat box and then humanize that with a sprinkle of synthesized drums from the world of Gord McRae. Few others would be brave enough to front such a concoction. Phil fronts it and makes it his own and puts together a standout performance. This performance is not to be missed!
