Silly Monkey Stories #194 – Hand sanitizer

Florencia lost two teeth within three days. She had some difficulties with the first one, because the Tooth Fairy failed to visit her during the first night. But even when she finally did and Florencia obtain her monetary reward, she didn’t seem to be completely satisfied.

Once she lost her second tooth, she went for a more direct approach and talked to her mother:

- Mom, the Tooth Fairy is always bringing me money and I don’t want money all the time!

- And what is it that you want?

- Well… maybe she could leave me a lollypop, or a toothbrush, or hand sanitizer, like she does with my friends

- OK, well… then write her a letter!

So there she went and wrote a letter to the Tooth Fairy introducing some modifications to the existing conditions that were part of the current Service Agreement. She couldn’t have found a smaller piece of paper to write on!

“Dear Tooth Fairy: May I have a lollypop instead of money?
Sincerely, toothless Florencia.”

”PS: Please reply. If it can’t be a lollypop, could it
be a hand sanitizer?”

Tooth Fairy did reply, the following morning, in the form of not one but five little containers full of hand sanitizer, a tooth brush and some toothpaste as well.

“I couldn’t find your tooth. I hope you like the hand sanitizer,

the tooth brush and the tooth paste”

”Sincerely, Toot Fairy”

This story somehow reminds me of that day in which I found myself telling Florencia: “No, no, no… you won’t have any salad until you finish your French fries…”

Florencia perdió dos dientes en el lapso de tres días. Tuvo problemas con el primero, porque el Tooth Fairy (o “Hada de los dientes”, equivalente norteamericano de nuestro vernáculo Ratón Pérez) se olvidó de pasar la primera noche. A pesar de que luego recibió sus dinerillos correspondientes, no pareció estar a gusto del todo.

Cuando perdió su segundo diente, intentó un approach un poco más directo con su madre:

- Mami, el Tooth Fairy siempre me deja plata y yo no quiero siempre plata!

- Y qué es lo que querés vos?

- Y… que me deje un lollypop (un chupetín) o un cepillo, o hand sanitizer (el gel para higienizarse las manos) como hace con mis amigas

- Y bueno… escribile una carta y pedíselo!

Ahi fue mi hija y le escribió una carta al Tooth Fairy demandando un cambio en el contrato de prestación de servicios que tenían acordado. No creo que pudiera haber encontrado un papel más chiquito para su carta!

“Querida Tooth Fairy: Podría tener un chupetín en lugar de dinero?
Sinceramente, Florencia sin dientes.”

”PS: Por favor respondeme. Si no puede ser un chupetín,
podría ser un gel para las manos?”

La respuesta de la Tooth Fairy llegó en la mañan siguiente, junto con no uno sino que cinco frasquitos de gel para higienizarse las manos:

“No pude encontrar tu diente. Espero que te guste el gel de las manos,
el cepillo de dientes y el dentífrico

Sinceramente, Tooth Fairy”

Por algún motivo, esta historia me hizo acordar del día en que le dije a Florencia: “No, no, no… si querés ensalada, primero terminá tus papas fritas…”

Embarrassing moments

I’m in Davenport, Iowa this week. I have been extremely busy, working 15 to 17 hours a day on average between last Friday and yesterday. Needless to say, I have slept very little (it seems tonight will be the exception!) so my judgment and my reactions are, well… slow.

I got up on Wednesday after what I though was 15 minutes of sleep and proceeded to go to take a shower. After that, I grabbed my toothbrush and was about to apply the tooth paste… when I realized I had my disposable razor in my hand instead!

Laughing, I said to myself: “Wow, I certainly am absent minded this morning!”. I put the razor down and grabbed the real toothbrush. Then I applied a generous amount of toothpaste on it.

I was kind of surprised to see that my toothpaste had suddenly become transparent. I looked at the container.

It wasn’t tooth paste, of course. It was Polysporin ®, the very well known healing ointment that I always carry with me because of my stubborn ingrown toenails. It was a miracle I didn’t put that stuff in my mouth!

It took me a good five minutes to clean my toothbrush so my gums wouldn’t be numb because of the Polysporin. I couldn’t believe had stupid I felt at that moment.

Judging by how the day unfolded after that, I should have had gone straight back to bed at that point.

They don’t even look alike! – Ni siquiera se parecen!

Estoy en Davenport, Iowa esta semana. He estado muy ocupado, trabajando 15 a 17 horas por día desde el último viernes y hasta ayer. No tengo ni que decir que he dormido poco y nada (aunque esta noche parece ser la excepción), así que mi claridad de mente y mis reacciones son… bueno, bastante limitadas.

El miércoles me levante luego de lo que sentí habían sido 15 minutos de sueño y me fui a dar una ducha. Después, munido de mi cepillo me dispuse a lavarme los dientes. Ya me iba a poner el dentífrico cuando caí en la cuenta de que lo que tenía en la mano era mi afeitadora descartable!

Riendo, me dije: “Guau, estoy especialmente abombado esta mañana!”. Dejé la afeitadora y esta vez sí agarré el cepillo de dientes. Luego apliqué una generosa cantidad de pasta sobre él.

Me llamó un poco la atención el hecho de que mi pasta dentífrica se hubiera vuelto súbitamente transparente, así que miré el envase un poco más detenidamente.

No era dentífrico, por supuesto. Era Polysporin ®, el muy conocido ungüento cicatrizante que siempre llevo conmigo debido a mis muy testarudas uñas encarnadas. Por milagro no me zampé ese mejunje en la boca!

Me llevó unos buenos cinco minutos limpiar mi cepillo para que mis encías no se durmieran por culpa del Polysporin. No podía creer lo estúpido que me sentía en ese momento.

A juzgar por cómo me fue en el resto del día, debería haberme vuelto derechito a la cama y seguir durmiendo…

the BMO Stadium in Toronto last Sunday. We won 1-0, with a goal by Santi

at the beginning of the match. It was a perfect day for him!!

El equipo de Santi jugó la final de la Liga Provincial de Fútbol Indoor en el

BMO Stadium de Toronto el domingo pasado. Ganamos 1-0 con gol de Santi

al principio del partido. Fue un día perfecto para él!

I had just come back from one of my trips and I was in the basement, in front of the computer, but also talking to Gaby. I made a comment about how tired I was or something, and Florencia overheard me as she was coming downstairs.

Always willing to help, she ran back upstairs and came back a few minutes later, holding to large glasses which she proceeded to give to us.

- What’s this?

- I made you guys an energy drink!

- An ener… What are the ingredients?

- Oh, you are going to love it! It has yogurt, milk and hot chocolate mix.

- (OK, it’s not that bad) Well, thanks, Flor, we’re going to drin…

- (Suddenly) Oh, I forgot!! I also ground coffee beans and put them in there for flavour and energy!!

- (We look at each other)

- Well, come on! Drink it!!

We drank it all, of course, and it was ‘great’. I hope she has a very successful career once she’s done with school and becomes a great pet doctor, singer or ballerina. Anything, as long as she doesn’t end thinking of new drinks at a bar… :-)

Acababa de volver de uno de mis viajes, y estaba abajo, frente a la compu pero también charlando con Gaby. Hice algún comentario sobre lo cansado que estaba, y Florencia me escuchó cuando venía bajando las escaleras.

Siempre pronta a ayudar, volvió a subir corriendo y regresó unos minutos después, con dos vasos grandes que procedió a entregarnos.

- Qué es esto?

- Les hice una bebida energizante!

- Una beb… Cuáles son los ingredientes?

- Oh, les va a encantar! Tiene yogur, leche y polvo para hacer chocolate caliente.

- (OK, no está tan mal) Bueno, gracias, Flor, ahora lo vamos a tom…

- (De pronto) Oh, me olvidé!!! También le molí granos de café y los puse adentro para que tenga más sabor y más energía!!

- (Nos miramos con Gaby)

- Bueno, qué pasa? Tómenlo!!

Lo bebimos todo, por supuesto, y estaba ‘buenísimo’. Espero que mi hija tenga una muy exitosa carrera una vez recibida y se reciba de veterinaria, cantante o bailarina, como ella quiere. Lo que sea, con tal de que no termine armando tragos en un bar… :-)

If you know me a little, you will not believe this post. But it did happen. I’m known for a few things around my friends and co-workers: one of them, for example, is my recurring joke about only knowing two food groups: “things I chase” and “things I fry”. Another one is the fact that I haven’t drunk any alcohol in my entire life (I had my first drink about about four years ago, and I have probably drunk five times since then). The final one is that I have never, ever, smoked. Not even as a joke.

Until last night.

I’m in the beautiful city of Greenville, South Carolina, doing training. Last night I went out for dinner with a couple of my colleagues, and we found a smoke bar just across the street. Somebody suggested we would go try some hookah, and I was the most surprised of the three when I heard myself say “Okay!”.

In case you don’t know what a hookah is, we could define it as a ‘waterpipe’, an instrument for smoking flavoured tobacco where the smoke goes through a basin and then through a hose. The tobacco is very light, and it’s normally flavoured, as I said before. The one we had last night smelled –and tasted– like apples.

This is a very common tradition in India, Pakistan and other Middle Eastern countries, and it’s gaining many adepts in the New World. I have seen them in the movies, and I even believe that the great “Les Luthiers” once created an informal instrument using a hookah, but other than that, nothing. Still, I went for it and after a few seconds of hesitation, I had my first sip.

Did I inhale the smoke? No. Did I choke? A little. Did I like it? No, not really. But at least I tried something new.

I look a little stoned, LOL – Parezco un poco ‘tocado’, no?

Si me conocen un poco, no van a creer este post. Pero sí, sucedió. Soy conocido por algunas cosas en mi círculo de amigos y compañeros de trabajo: una es mi broma recurrente acerca de que sólo reconozco dos grupos de comida: “cosas que persigo” y “cosas que frío”. Otra cosa es el hecho de que no he tomado alcohol en mi vida (tuve mi primera experiencia hace unos cuatro años y desde entonces apenas si he probado una bebida). Por último, también soy conocido por no haber fumado jamás en la vida. Ni siquiera para hacer una broma.

Hasta anoche.

Estoy en la hermosa ciudad de Greenville, South Carolina, tomando un curso. Anoche salí a comer con un par de colegas, y encontramos un ‘smoke bar’ justo en frente. Alguien sugerío ir a fumar un poco de narguile (o hookah), y yo fui el más sorprendido de los tres cuando me escuché a mí mismo decir “Okay!”.

En caso de que no sepan qué es el narguile o hookah, podríamos definirlo como una ‘pipa de agua’, un instrumento utilizado para fumar tabaco saborizado, el que el humo pasa por una cacerolita y luego a través de una mangera. El tabajo es muy liviano y saborizado, como dije. El que fumamos anoche olía –y tenía gusto– a manzanas.

Esta es una tradición muy común en India, Pakistán y otros países del Medio Oriente, y está ganando muchos adeptos en el Nuevo Mundo. Yo los he visto en el nuevo mundo, y hasta creo que los geniales “Les Luthiers” crearon un instrumento usando un narguile, pero no sé mucho más que eso. De todos modos dije que sí y luego de unos momentos de duda, me animé a probarlo.

Tragué el humo? No. Me ahogué? Un poquito. Me gustó? No, no mucho. Pero al menos me animé a probar algo nuevo.

It was Saturday night and we were all watching TV. Right before we went to bed, Florencia got up and went to get a couple of Argentine chocolates bites named “Marroc”, which she promptly shared with her mom.

I was surprised not only at the fact that she never even made an attempt to offer me one, but she even looked like she was trying to hide the fact that she was eating them from me. Knowing that she’s Daddy’s girl, I put a sad face and said the words that I know generate an instant reaction from my little daughter:

- Nobody likes me… nobody will even share a chocolate with me!

Florencia’s response was very different from the “I do like you, Daddy!” I’m used to, and it left me stunned:

- But Dad… if I give you a chocolate your blood sugar is going to go up! You can’t have this!!

I will never know whether she was genuinely concerned about my health of if she wanted all the chocolates for herself (and her Mom).

Era sábado a la noche y estábamos mirando TV. Justo antes de irnos a la cama, Florencia se levantó y se trajo unos bocaditos de chocolate “Marroc” que nos habían enviado desde Argentina, los que inmediatamente compartió con su madre.

A mí me sorprendió no sólo el hecho de que nunca hizo un intento de convidarme uno, sino que hasta pareció que se escondía para comer así yo no la veía. Sabiendo que ella es la nena de papá, puse cara triste y dije las palabras que sé que siempre generan una reacción en mi pequeña hija:

- Nadie me quiere… ni siquiera me convidan un chocolate!

La respuesta de Florencia fue muy diferente del “Yo sí te quiero, Papi!” al que estoy acostumbrado, y me dejó atónito:

- Pero Papi… Si te doy un chocolate tu azúcar se va a poner muy alto! No podés comer esto!!

Nunca sabré si ella estaba genuinamente interesada en mi salud o si simplemente quería todos los chocolates para ella (y su Mamá).

Florencia was sick this past week. She got an ear infection, so she was in a lot of pain, as you can imagine. She came back from the clinic shaking like a leaf. Like her mother, being sick scares here a lot.

I did what I do best: I comforted her. I was lying on my couch, still recovering from my groin injury -I've been in a lot of pain for over two weeks now-, so I asked her to come and lay on top of my belly ‘like when you were a baby'.

- No, I can’t, my ear hurts so much!!!

- Then lay on top of my belly, but looking the other way. I will cure you in no time, you’ll see…

She comes over and carefully climbs up my belly (which I won’t say it’s the Everest, but maybe the K2 for her).

- Hey, stop crying!! You’re getting my shirt all wet!! This is not a booger,i is it?

I got a smile from her. That was good. My method worked, of course: a couple of minutes later, not only she had stopped shaking but she was also asleep.

Florencia stayed home the following morning. I told her she could sleep in my bed, and that I was going to be working in bed all day just to be with her. She woke up, hugged me and asked me if she could go get some cereal. “It’s OK”, I said, “but you’re not going to eat those Fruit Loops in bed, are you? If Mom finds a single one, I’m toast!”

Of course she did, and then she fell asleep again. About half an hour later, and as I was very busy with my stuff, she woke up, turned around, grabbed my right arm and curled around it, while saying:

- You’re the best Daddy in the whole world…

Then she went back to sleeping. I spent about 10 minutes just watching her in awe. She had just made my day.

That night, when Gaby went to bed, she found a green Fruit Loop under the pillow. And yes, I got in trouble.

Florencia estuvo enferma la semana pasada. Tuvo una infección del oído, algo que es dolorosísimo, como pueden imaginar. Volvió de la clínica temblando como una hoja. Como su madre, se asusta mucho cuando se enferma.

Yo hice lo que sé hacer: la conforté. Estaba tirado en el sillón, aún recuperándome de un tirón en mi ingle –me he pasado los últimos 15 días con un dolor muy intenso-, así que le dije que viniera y se tirara arriba de mi estómago ‘como cuando eras bebita’.

- No puedo, mi oído me duele mucho!!!

- Entonces acostate en mi panza, pero mirando para el otro lado. Te voy a curar enseguida, vas a ver…

Ella viene y cuidadosamente se trepa a mi barriga (no diré que fue el Everest para ella, pero sí al menos el K2).

- Hey, basta de llorar!!! Me estás mojando toda la remera!! Esto no serán mocos, no?

Le arranqué una sonrisa. Eso fue buena señal. Mi método funcionó, por supuesto: un par de minutos más tarde, no sólo había dejado de temblar, sino que también se había quedado profundamente dormida.

Florencia se quedó en casa al otro día. Yo le dije que podía dormir en mi cama, y que yo iba a trabajar en mi cama todo el día para estar con ella. Flor se despertó, me abrazó y me preguntó si podía comer cereales. “Está bien”, dije, “pero no pensarás comer los Fruit Loops en la cama, no? Si tu mamá encuentra uno, me revienta!”

Por supuesto que los comió, tras lo cual se durmió otra vez. Una media hora más tarde, y mientras yo estaba muy concentrado en lo mío, se dio vuelta, se enroscó alrededor de mi brazo derecho y me dijo bajito:

- Sos el mejor Papi de todo el mundo…

Y siguió durmiendo. Yo me quedé como 10 minutos mirándola, embelesado. Qué mejor forma de empezar el día…

Esa noche, cuando Gaby fue a acostarse, se encontró un Fruit Loop verde debajo de la almohada. Y sí, me metí en problemas.

The Ultimate Blog Party, 2012 Edition

Hello, and thanks for dropping by! In case you don’t know me, my name is Gabriel, and I’m an Argentine living in Canada since 2000, along with my wife Gabriela (I know, Gabriel and Gabriela…) and my four kids: Santiago (almost 17), Carolina (15), Juan (13) and Florencia (8).

Three teenagers in the house… what a blessing! And people wonder why I travel so much… :-)

I do travel, a lot. I work for AGFA, a well-known graphics company, which also has a healthcare informatics division. I live in Waterloo, Ontario, but I’m one of the ten people in there who doesn’t currently work, nor has worked or is seeking employment at RIM. I do have a BlackBerry, though, and I love it. Oh, and a PlayBook that comes with me to every trip.

I write about pretty much everything, but there are two major themes in here: one is that I always try to put a little humour to everything I write (sometimes I'm even mildly successful) and the other thing is that I write a lot about my kids and my life with them. Not that I don't have to say anything about my dear wife! You just wait a couple of days... :-)

I write about my kids, and I consider myself a blogger Dad, no doubts about it. I do plenty of different things, but being a Daddy is the best job I have ever had (though I never look forward to the performance review meetings)…

I though it would be a great idea to enter the 2012 Edition of the Ultimate Blog Party. I have been following "5 Minutes for Mom" for quite some time now, and I thought this would be a good excuse for me to showcase my blog a little, and then see if I can go back to being a little more social... I haven't been paying too much attention to my fellow bloggers lately, I'm fully aware of that.

Hola a todos y gracias por la visita! Por si aún no me conocen, mi nombre es Gabriel y soy un argentino viviendo en Canadá desde el 2000, junto con mi esposa Gabriela (ya sé, Gabriel y Gabriela…) y mis cuatro hijos: Santiago (casi 17), Carolina (15), Juan (13) y Florencia (8).

Tres adolescentes en la casa… toda una bendición! Y la gente se pregunta por qué viajo tanto… :-)

Viajo, es cierto. Trabajo en AGFA, una muy conocida compañía de gráfica y fotografía, que tambié tiene una división de informática para la salud. Vivo en Waterloo, Ontario, pero soy una de las diez personas de allí que no trabaja actualmente, trabajó en el pasado o busca trabajo en RIM. Sí tengo un BlackBerry, y lo amo. Ah, también tengo una PlayBook, que es mi compañera inseparable de viajes.

Escribo sobre de todo un poco, pero hay dos temas predominantes aquí: el primero es que siempre intento ponerle un poquito de humor a lo que escribo (a veces hasta con moderado éxito) y el otro tema es que escribo mucho sobre mis hijos y mi vida con ellos. Eso no quiere decir que no tenga mucho que decir de mi querida esposa! Sólo esperen un par de días… :-)

Escribo sobre mis hijos y me considero un ‘papá blogger’, sin dudas. Hago muchísimas cosas en mi vida, pero ser padre es el mejor trabajo que haya tenido (aunque no siempre espero los días de evaluación de rendimiento con alegría…)

Pensé que sería una buena idea entrar a la Edición 2012 del Ultimate Blog Party. He seguido el blog "5 Minutes for Mom" por bastante tiempo, y pensé que sería una buena excusa para que mostrar mi blog a una nueva audiencia, y de paso ver si me pongo un poco más sociable, porque últimamente… un desastre. Lo tengo muy claro.

Friday evening. We’re getting ready for dinner but the boys are still downstairs, presumably playing video games. Flor is with her mother, helping her set up the table:

- Flor, could you please call your brothers and tell them to come upstairs?

- (Turning around) SAANTIIII!!!! JUAAAAANNN!!!

- (Pretending to be mad, but barely holding laughter) I meant you go look for them! I could have yelled like that too!

- (Without a hint of irony) Well, why don’t you try it, it works…

- Flor, podés llamar a los chicos y decirles que ya vengan para arriba?

- (Dándose vuelta) SAANTIIII!!!! JUAAAAANNN!!!

- (Pretendiendo estar enojada, pero apenas conteniendo la risa) Yo te pedí que los fueras a buscar! Yo también puedo gritar así desde acá!

- (Ni una pizca de ironía en su tono) Y por qué no probás? Funciona…

Cyber nostalgia

Found these really funny videos today. One shows how Google would have looked back in the 80s, if I had connected through a BBS. I loved it, though my kids could not believe one would have to wait for more than four seconds to get whatever information we needed.

The second one is a version of Twitter as if it were run from MS DOS (from a floppy disk!). The GUI kind of reminds me of an old favourite of mine back then, Borland Sidekick.

The final one is the uber-popular Angry Birds game, in its Commodore 64 version. I don’t care what anybody says, these videos are awesome. And the games we used to play back then, equally great. I spent so many hours playing Summer Games and Pitfall on my brother’s Commodore 128… I loved those games! I also remember playing Prince of Persia on my PC XT turbo, many years later, and watch it fly thanks to my 12 Mhz processor (only when the ‘turbo’ button was on). :-)

Yes, I do miss those times.

Me encontré estos videos hoy, muy buenos. Uno muestra cómo hubiera sido Google en los 80s, si me hubiese conectado a través de un BBS. Me encantó, aunque mis hijos no pudieron comprender el concepto de haber tenido que esperar más de cuatro segundos para obtener la información requerida.

El segundo muestra una versión de Twitter ejecutada desde MS DOS (en un diskette!). El GUI me recuerda a un viejo favorito mío, el Borland Sidekick.

Finalmente tenemos al uber-popular juego Angry Birds, en su versión Commodore 64. No me importa lo que digan, estos videos están geniales. Y los juegos que solíamos jugar allá lejos y hace tiempo eran buenísimos. Si me habré pasado horas jugando al Summer Games o al Pitfall en la Commodore 128 de mi hermano… Me encantaban esos jueguitos! También recuerdo jugar al Prince of Persia en mi PC XT turbo, muchos años después, y ver cómo el juego ‘volaba’ gracias a mi procesador de 12Mhz (bueno, sólo si el botón ‘turbo’ estaba prendido). :-)

La verdad que sí, extraño esos tiempos.

I suffer from ingrown toenails. It happens to me all the time and it’s really painful. I try to trim my toenails and keep them healthy and out of trouble, but in the end it’s always the same story: I get an ingrown toenail, my big toes get infected, lots of pain and a couple of weeks of constant care. I even had (enter cringe mode) one of my toenails surgically removed (exit cringe mode) a couple years ago.

It was particularly bad a couple of weeks ago, and it affected both my big toes at the same time. I was cleaning them up the other day and after I applied the ointment I realized I had run out of band aids or gauze. “It’s OK, I bought some when I was travelling the other month”, I remembered, so I went looking for them in my suitcase.

That’s when I remembered that I had bought them while travelling with my girls… Hey, a band aid is a band aid.

Sufro por mis uñas encarnadas. Me pasa –en los pies– todo el tiempo y duele muchísimo. Trato de cortar mis uñas y mantener los dedos sanos y fuera de problemas, pero al final es siempre lo mismo. Se me encarna una, se me infectan los dedos gordos del pie, paso dolores increíbles y siguen un par de semanas de cuidados. Si hasta he tenido (prepárense para fruncirse) que recurrir al cirujano para que me sacaran una uña (ya se me fruncieron) hace un par de años.

Fue particularmente complicado hace un par de semanas, y me afectó ambos dedos pulgares del pie. Me estaba limpiando las heridas el otro día y luego de aplicar el unguento cicatrizante, caí en la cuenta de que no tenía más apósitos o gasa. “Está bien, compré más en uno de mis viajes”, recordé, así que me fui a buscarlas a mi valija.

Ahí fue que recordé que las había comprado cuando viajé con mis hijas… Y bueno, che, una curita es una curita.

I wrote this post about the Malvinas / Falkland war yesterday; I wasn’t expecting a lot of reaction to it because my blog traffic is so low these days that I’m setting new negative records almost daily (I had 20 –twenty– visitors on average this past weekend, which is what I would have in an hour just a year ago, before the hacking).

There was a nice comment by Mike, and some reaction on Facebook, but I wasn’t prepared for this:

That’s it for me. I have finally made it. My son almost expressed approval of something I have created.

Dude, I have three teenagers in the house. I know this is going to be as good as it will get.

Ayer escribí este post sobre la guerra de las Malvinas; no esperaba mucho ruido porque últimamente mi blog anda tan mal que estoy rompiendo records negativos de tráfico casi todos los días (tuve 20 –veinte– visitas en promedio este fin de semana, que es menos de lo que tenía por hora hace sólo un año, antes de ser hackeado).

Hubo un comentario muy lindo de Mike, y alguna reacción en Facebook. Pero nada me preparó para esto:

Eso es todo para mí. He ‘llegado’. Mi hijo casi expresó aprobación de algo que yo creé.

Gente, tengo tres adolescentes en la casa. Yo sé muy bien que no puedo pretender más que esto.

Silly Monkey Stories #189 – The ‘turbo’ button

Year 2000 – Santi (5), Carolina (3) and Juan (1)

Me and Santi were in the car the other day, and we were running behind. He then told me “Come on, man! Why don’t you press the turbo button?” , which caused both of us to laugh. He made me remember this story that I hadn’t mentioned here yet.

Back in 2000, and right before we left for Canada, it was common for me to spend the weekend alone with the kids, because Gaby would work Saturday and Sunday at her pasta store. We would normally go to a park or the zoo on Saturdays, weather permitting; if the day was too ugly or too cold, then we would go to the Unicenter Shopping and then to the movies. In all of these cases, we would have to take the Panamerican highway and that would be where the demands will be made:

- Hurry, Daddy! Faster!!

- We will be late!!

- Huddy up! (it was a lot of fun to hear Juan talk at that age)

I would pretend not to listen at first, which would cause the kids to ask me to use our Cuiki’s (our car) secret weapon: its turbo button. This device, incredibly similar to that one you press when you’re about to park or driving at a very low speed, would grant to my small vehicle the ability of reaching almost supersonic speed. That is why I would be hesitant to use it, I wouldn’t want the sudden change in Kinetic Energy and the many G’s we would have to endure to affect them too much…

- Come on, Dad!!!

- I don’t know, guys, it’s too risky… should I press it now?

- Yes!!

I would press the button in the middle of the highway, turn on the parking lights and hit the gas pedal. Not that much, let’s say from 100 to 110 km/h. But of course, it was a a lot for my kids, and I would make sure that I would make it look much bigger than what it really was.

- That’s it!! Yea, Daddy!! Let’s go!!

- Oh, wow, this is too fast!! I gotta slow down, I gotta slow down!!

I would turn off the parking lights and go back to my normal speed. The kids were happier than a dog with two tails, they felt like they were on a Formula 1 car.

Now I wonder what people driving behind me must have thought… :-)

El otro día iba con Santi en el auto y veníamos medio atrasados, así que me dijo “Apurate, che! Por qué no apretás el botón de turbo?” , tras lo cual ambos nos reímos con ganas. Así me hizo recordar esta historia que aún no había mencionado aquí.

Allá por el 2000, justo antes de venirnos para Canadá, era común que yo pasara el fin de semana solo con los chicos, porque Gaby trabajaba sábado y domingo en su fábrica de pastas. Por lo general aprovechábamos el sábado para salir a pasear, ya sea al parque, al zoológico o a algún lugar al aire libre si estaba lindo, o al Unicenter Shopping y al cine si estaba muy feo o muy frío. En todos los casos, teníamos que tomar la Autopista Panamericana, y ahí era cuando comenzaban los reclamos:

- Dale, Papi! Más rápido!!

- No vamos a llegar!!

- Apudate! (La media lengua de Juan era realmente deliciosa)

Yo me hacía rogar un poco, lo que motivaba a los chicos a pedirme que utilizara el arma secreta de nuestro auto, el ‘Cuiki’: su botón turbo. Este botón, sospechosamente parecido al que se usa cuando uno está parado o circulando a muy baja velocidad (las balizas), le daba a mi pequeño vehículo la habilidad de alcanzar velocidades casi supersónicas. Era por eso que yo me resistía, no quería que el súbito cambio de energía cinética y el exceso de gravedad que teníamos que soportar los afectara demasiado…

- Dale, Pa!!!

- No sé, me parece muy arriesgado… Les parece que lo apriete ahora?

- Sí!!!

En plena autopista, apretaba el botón para prender las balizas y procedía a acelerar. No mucho, pongámosle que de 100 a 110 km/h. Pero claro, para mis chiquitos era una barbaridad, y yo me ocupaba de exagerarlo muy bien.

- Bien!! Tí, Papi!! Viva!!

- Eh, guau, se me fue la mano!!! Tengo que aflojar, tengo que aflojar!!!

Apagaba el botón y volvía a mi velocidad crucero, y los chicos felices de la vida, se sentían corredores de Fórmula 1.

Me pregunto qué pensaría la gente que venía detrás de mí… :-)

Malvinas, 30 years later

I have mixed feelings about the Malvinas (also known as Falklands) issue. Very little was done by our governments in the almost 150 years that passed after they were occupied by the UK in 1833. There were times when there were some faint claims, and others in which the situation was thoroughly ignored. We were raised and educated with the idea that these islands were part of our territory, that they were our ‘missing sisters’, but the truth is that very little was done besides that. It was like now, where everybody talks and talks about the Malvinas islands (including our very corrupt government) but nobody would move a finger or come up with an idea to deal with the issue. This doesn’t mean the previous governments were any better, though. They were all equally inept.

We must have gone to war against the UK, but I don’t lose sight of who was our real enemy: we had a military government, absolutely illegitimate and in decadence, but still supported for part of our society (including the couple that regrettably has ruled the destiny of my home country for the last ten years). Things were definitely looking bad and the government of the drunken General Galtieri was going down in flames. The ‘Brazil’ branch of the CGT (workers union) had called for a strike and marched on Plaza de Mayo on March 30, 1982; this had ended with numerous incidents and even a death. The government was agonizing. Something had to be done.

The solution was simple yet terrifying: they re-invaded the islands with overnight, and hoped for the appearance of the until then almost unknown Argentine sense of patriotism. It was a good move: three days after that march that had ended in a bloody repression by the police, Plaza de Mayo was again full of people, but this time they were cheering this same illegitimate government for having ‘recovered’ the islands. I’m sure many people actually attended both demonstrations.

What happened after that? Not too much. The government had no plan or strategy; it had all been concocted in a matter of hours! Our President was naive enough (I would say imbecile) to think that US President Reagan would support him in the event of a conflict with the UK, just because they seemed to get along. He also probably thought that the UK government, without a doubt taken by surprise, was not going to react (those islands are so far away after all!). In summary, the whole plot was a good example of why many people consider the phrase “military intelligence”an oxymoron.

When it became evident that a conflict was imminent, they sent 18, 19 year old kids to the islands, with no experience, preparation or adequate clothing. They starved, froze and went through the most demeaning situations one can think of. Some of these kids, desperate, would come out of the trenches to meet the English soldiers, so they could be captured. Unfortunately for them, sometimes they would end meeting the ghurkas, the Nepalese brigade, which would kill everybody on sight, no questions asked.

Where were the head of our military forces in the meantime? In Buenos Aires, of course, comfortable and warm, getting ready to watch the FIFA World Cup in Spain. Like most of us were, I have to say, because we were very effectively brainwashed (almost like they do these days). The Army Forces started this incredible war, and a good part of our society backed them up. But when things got difficult, only the Air Force and the Navy pilots stayed to fight and held their own, which is why they’re recognized by their efforts and skills even today. The rest, nothing… Letters and chocolates and very eloquent speeches, but that was all. You can tell me that this is a very outrageous comparison I’m making, but there were more references to the problems with the cell phone company Movistar than to the anniversary of the beginning of the Malvinas war on Twitter today.

So… today we witness a revival of this claim of sovereignty, which will last as much as this government needs to use it as a smoke screen. Even more, the tone of what is being said is very similar to that coming from those illegitimate and drunken generals from back then. But we all know that everything will go back to ‘normal’ soon afterwards, and our society will continue to hide, ignore and feel ashamed of our war veterans, the only ones we have; this poor people will continue to live in poverty and shame, like they have been since that remote and fatal 1982.

My tribute and respect to those who fought in the Malvinas war between April and June of 1982. They will always be my heroes.

Tengo sentimientos encontrados acerca del tema Malvinas. Ocupadas por Inglaterra en 1833, nuestros gobiernos dejaron pasar casi 150 años entre períodos de tibios reclamos y otros en los que se ignoró la situación por completo. A nosotros nos educaron diciéndonos que las islas eran nuestras, que eran nuestras ‘hermanitas perdidas’, pero la verdad es que no pasó más de eso. Era como ahora, en que todo el mundo se llena la boca hablando de las Malvinas (nuestro nefasto y corruptísimo gobierno incluído), pero nadie jamás mueve un dedo o tira una idea al respecto. Esto no quiere decir que los gobiernos anteriores hayan sido mejores, por supuesto. Fueron todos igualmente ineptos.

La guerra habrá sido contra el Reino Unido, pero yo no me olvido de quién fue el verdadero enemigo: teníamos un gobierno militar, totalmente ilegítimo y en decadencia, pero así y todo avalado por ciertos sectores de nuestra sociedad (incluyendo a la pareja que lamentablemente ha regido los destinos de nuestro país por los últimos diez años). Las cosas estaban decididamente mal y el gobierno del beodo General Galtieri se caía en picada. La rama ‘Brasil’ de la CGT (central obrera) había hecho un paro con movilización el 30 de Marzo de 1982, el que había terminado con numerosos incidentes y hasta un muerto. Este gobierno de facto agonizaba. Había que hacer algo.

La solución fue simple y terrorífica: se re-invadieron las islas a los ponchazos y se apeló al hasta entonces cuasi desconocido patriotismo de nuestra sociedad. La movida fue un éxito: tres días después de esa marcha que había terminado con una sangrienta represión, la Plaza de Mayo estaba nuevamente llena de gente, que vivaba a un gobierno ilegítimo por haber ‘recuperado’ las islas. Estoy seguro de que muchos deben haber estado en ambas marchas.

Que vino después? No mucho. El gobierno no tenía plan o estrategia alguna, si todo había sido cocinado en cuestión de horas! Nuestro Presidente era tan ingenuo (yo diría imbécil) que pensó que el gobierno de Reagan (con quien se llevaba más que bien) lo apoyaría en un conflicto con el Reino Unido. Así nos fue. También pensó que el gobierno inglés, sin dudas sorprendido por la situación, no iba a reaccionar (las islas quedan tan lejos!). En fin, la movida fue todo un ejemplo de por qué se considera a la frase ‘inteligencia militar’ un oximorón.

Cuando se hizo evidente que un conflicto armado estaba cerca, enviaron a las islas a chicos de 18 ó 19 años, totalmente inexpertos, sin preparación ni vestimenta adecuada. Pasaron hambre, frío y las más denigrantes situaciones que uno pueda pensar. Algunos de estos chicos, desesperados, salían al encuentro de las tropas inglesas para que los capturaran. Lamentablemente, en muchos casos se encontraban con los ghurkas, la brigada nepalesa de las tropas inglesas, que los pasaban por las armas allí mismo.

Dónde estaba mientras tanto nuestra cúpula militar? En Buenos Aires, por supuesto, cómodos y calentitos, preparándose para mirar el Mundíal de España. Como la gran mayoría de nosotros, debo decir, porque nos lavaron el cerebro muy bien (casi, casi como lo hacen ahora). Las Fuerzas Armadas iniciaron esta guerra increíble, y buena parte de la sociedad los respaldó. Pero a la hora de los bifes sólo la Aeronáutica y la Fuerza Aérea salvaron la ropa y es por eso que el día de hoy aún son reconocidos por sus esfuerzos y habilidad. El resto, nada… Cartitas y chocolates, y declaraciones efectistas, pero nunca nada más. Me dirán que es un método muy antojadizo el que uso, pero hoy hay más referencias en Twitter a los problemas con la compañía de teléfonos celulares Movistar que al aniversario del inicio de la guerra en Malvinas.

En fin… hoy asistimos a un ‘revival’ de este reclamo, que va a durar tanto como a este gobierno le convenga usarlo como pantalla. Es más, el discurso es peligrosamente parecido al de aquellos militares ilegítimos y borrachos de por entonces. Pero sabemos que luego, todo volverá a ser como era antes, con una sociedad que esconde, ignora y se avergüenza de los únicos veteranos de guerra que tenemos, y esta pobre gente seguirá penando en la indigencia, como lo ha venido haciendo desde aquél lejano y fatídico 1982.

Mi tributo y respeto a aquellos que combatieron en la guerra de Malvinas entre Abril y Junio de 1982. Siempre serán mis héroes.

Silly Monkey Stories #188 – Too big for iCarly

24/Mar/2012 – Shiloh (5)

We’re lucky, little Shiloh came to visit us again, along with her sister, her dad and his girlfriend, my beautiful ‘niece’ Sileny. We spent all afternoon on Saturday talking, playing and –of course– eating. Florencia played with Shiloh and her sister Leah, and we didn’t hear of any disagreements or fights, as usual. These three girls really get along with each other.

At one moment, the kids brought all of our Webkinz for the girls to see (including mine!), and Juan was nice enough to give away to of his, one to each girl. I took “Ratontito”, my webkinz, and I spent the whole afternoon and evening placing it in the most unusual places (on top of the TV, hanging from the chandelier, playing with my laptop), pretending to be really mad at him whenever little Shiloh found him. She even gave him a fifteen minutes timeout!! And he got away when she wasn’t looking, of course. The girls left at around 11:00 PM, but my pet mouse had another surprise waiting for Shiloh… When she opened the front door to get in the car, she found my friend on the driveway, waiting to go in. She must be still scratching her head! :-)

We were talking about TV shows during dinner, and Sileny confessed that many times after the girls had gone to bed, she had found herself watching an episode of iCarly, the Disney show. I said that I could understand that, since the show is really funny (I love Carly’s brother and her blonde friend). So I said that I too have enjoyed the occasional episode of iCarly. That’s when Shiloh suddenly heard me:

- What? What did you say you watch?

- I watch iCarly. (Pretending to be excited) I LOVE iCarly!

- No! You can’t!

- (Puzzled) Why?

- You’re too BIG for that show!!!

The tone was more in the lines of “That’s MY show and you’re not allowed to watch it, OK?”.

This girl kills me. She’s absolutely adorable, so beautiful and so innocent. She’s my family newest favourite person.

24/Mar/2012 – Shiloh (5)

Andamos de suerte, Shiloh nos vino a visitar de nuevo con su hermana, su papá Daniel (y su novia, mi hermosa ‘sobrina’ Sileny). Pasamos toda la tarde / noche del sábado hablando, jugando y –por supuesto–, comiendo. Flor jugó con Shiloh y su hermana Leah todo el tiempo, y no se escuchó queja o pelea alguna, como siempre. Estas tres nenas sí que se llevan bien!

En un determinado momento, los chicos trajeron todos sus Webkinz para que los vieran las nenas (trajeron hasta el mío!) y Juan fue tan bueno que les regaló uno a cada una de ellas. Yo agarré a “Ratontito”, mi webkinz, y me pasé la tarde y la noche poniéndolo en los lugares más inverosímiles (sobre la TV, colgando de una araña, jugando con mi laptop), y luego pretendía estar muy enojado con él cuando Shiloh lo encontraba. Si hasta lo puso en penitencia por quince minuto!!! Y el por supuesto se escapó cuando no lo vigilaban. Las chicas se fueron a eso de las 11:00 PM pero mi ratón mascota aún tenía una sorpresa para Shiloh… Cuando fue a abrir la puerta para salir y meterse en el auto, se lo encontró a Ratontito, que estaba esperando ansioso para entrar. Todavía debe estar rascándose la cabeza!! :-)

Hablábamos sobre programas de TV durante la cena, y Sileny confesó que muchas veces se había encontrado mirando un episodio de iCarly (el show de Disney) luego de que las nenas se hubieran ido a la cama. Yo respondí que podía entender eso, porque el show es realmente divertido (me encanta el hermano de Carly y su amiga rubia). Le dije a Sile que yo también de vez en cuando me enganchaba a mirar algún que otro episodio de este show. Ahí fue que Shiloh de pronto me escuchó:

- Qué? Qué es lo que dijiste que mirás?

- Miro iCarly. (Pretendiendo gran excitación) Me ENCANTA iCarly!

- No! No te puede encantar!

- (Extrañado) Por qué?

- Porque sos demasiado GRANDE para ese show!!!

El tono era más como diciendo “Ese es mi showy vos no tenés permiso de verlo, OK?”.

Esta nena me ‘mata’. Es absolutamente adorable, tan hermosa y tan inocente. Es la nueva persona favorita de toda mi familia.

Since yesterday

Just a few things that have happened to me since yesterday:

I drove from my house in Waterloo, ON all the way to Davenport, Iowa, where I am today
I left at 4:00 PM, and should have arrived at around 1:00 AM, which would be midnight local time (I went across a time zone)
I took the wrong turn near Chicago, and followed I-94 North for about 45 minutes until I realized what I had done
Between that and the two long stops I made (one for food, the other… for other things), I got to the hotel at 3:00 AM
Once I got here, I realized that I had forgotten my yubikey (which I use to access my company’s VPN)
I went to bed at 4:00 AM (again, local time) and was planning on sleeping for a good five,six hours. No can do. Got calls starting at 7:00 AM. I’m tired
I forgot to bring a sweater, fleece or anything like that, and it’s freezing in here. I’m about to buy me a fleece at the hospital’s gift shop…
Worst of all: my wife has been reminding me to call so I could take my company car to get the oil change, as I just went past the 10,000 km mark. I kept saying “Yes, I got it”, but procrastinated until last Friday. Of course I wouldn’t get any appointments before next week. Then, last night, as I’m about to arrive to destination, I got the “Change engine oil soon” message on my dashboard. Crap. She wins again. I already got an appointment for today, so I hope today is the day Gaby doesn’t read my blog so she thinks (erroneously) that I’m responsible.

Algunas cosas que me han pasado desde ayer:

Manejé desde mi casa en Waterloo, ON hasta Davenport, Iowa, donde estoy hoy
Salí a las 4:00 PM, y debería haber arrivado a eso de la 1:00 AM, lo que sería medianoche en hora local (atravesé un cambio de hora)

Entre eso y las dos largas paradas que hice (una para comer y la otra para… otras cosas), llegué al hotel a las 3:00 AM
Una vez que llegué, me dí cuenta de que me había olvidado mi yubikey (el que uso para acceder el mail y la red del trabajo)
Me acosté a las 4:00 AM (hora local) y pensaba dormir unas cinco o seis horas. Imposible. Me empezaron a llamar a las 7:00 AM. Estoy cansadito.
Me olvidé de traer un sweater, buzo o cualquier clase de abrigo y hace un frío de aquellos. Ya me estoy por comprar un buzo con el logo del hospital en la tiendita que tienen aquí.
La peor de todas: mi esposa me ha estado recordando que tengo que llevar el auto de la compañía a hacer el service, porque ya me he pasado de los 10,000 km. Yo le contestaba “Sí, ya estoy en eso”, pero me dejé estar hasta el viernes. Por supuesto, no pude conseguir citas hasta la semana que viene. Anoche, casi llegando a destino, me apareció el mensajito “Cambie el aceite cuanto antes” en mi tablero. Ufa. Otra vez gana ella. Ya saqué un turno para hoy, así que espero que éste sea el día en que Gaby no lea mi blog y así piense (equivocadamente) que soy responsable.
