Embarrassing moments

I get normally distracted (I’d say absent minded) when I’m busy and forget basic things like where I left my wallet, my phone or my USB key. I’m really busy these days, with three upgrades in three consecutive weekends and a whole bunch of other work stuff going on, so I’m particularly clumsy.

Still, nothing justifies having forgotten to take off my glasses before I took a shower yesterday…

I had the phone in there because I was texting my manager, OK? :-)

Con frecuencia me distraigo (o me pongo más torpe que lo normal) cuando estoy ocupado, y me olvido de cosas elementales como por ejemplo dónde dejé mi billetera, mi teléfono o mi disco USB. Estoy muy ocupado por estos días, habiendo hecho tres upgrades en tres fines de semanas consecutivos y con muchas otras cosas del trabajo en el tintero, así que ando peor que nunca.

Pero nada justifica haberme metido en la ducha con los anteojos puestos ayer…

I know that the “I love cats” video I posted on Tuesday was hilarious, especially with its ‘Songify’ version. But a few minutes after I watched the singing version of the cats video, I stumble upon this one and I just couldn’t stop laughing… It’s very popular so chances are you’ve watched it already. Still… watch it again. It’s just awesome!

Ya sé que el video de “Amo los gatitos” que posteé el martes era muy bueno, especialmente con su versión cantada. Pero unos minutos luego de haber mirado ese video, me topé con este otro y no pude dejar de reír… Yo sé que es muy popular y posiblemente ya lo hayan visto. Pero igual… mírenlo otra vez. Es genial!

Road rage

Monday night, and I’m just leaving the supermarket, where I had gone to buy some water and snacks I could put in the little fridge in my hotel room. I took Lovers Lane, driving on the second leftmost lane because I had to turn to take highway 75 soon…

As I’m about to arrive to the intersection, driving at a very reasonable speed, I hear that the car behind me is honking very insistently. “What’s the problem with this guy?” , I thought, “Is there a problem with my tail lights, or do I have a flat tire?”. No, nothing like that. He was just in a hurry because there was an extra lane about five yards in front of me, for those who turn left, and he wanted to get there as soon as possible… I had a car right in front of me, where did this guy wanted me to go???!!!

I chose to ignore the moron, who immediately proceeded to switch lanes at full speed, making a face that almost caused me to wet my pants. I kept circulating at a normal speed. That’s when I saw that the guy had come to a full stop, unable to turn left due to the upcoming traffic and the fact that he had another car in front of him.

With a big smile, I lowered my window and honked to greet him, though I forgot to extend four of my fingers in the hurry. Then I said to him in an inaudible voice but pronouncing very well, something that sounded like “vacuum”… And I kept moving, with the satisfaction of having fulfilled my duty.

Normally, I would have been mad for hours after something like this. But since I decided to laugh at him and had such a great time doing it, I didn’t even remember the incident until this morning, when I started to think what I could write about…

Era lunes a la noche y yo recién salía del supermercado, adonde habia ido a comprar agua, galletitas y otras cosas para poner en la heladerita de mi habitación de hotel. Tomé la calle Lovers Lane, circulando por el segundo carril desde la izquierda porque enseguida tenía que girar para tomar la autopista 75.

Cuando estoy por llegar a la intersección, circulando a una velocidad más que normal, siento que desde atrás me tocan la bocina insistentemente. “Qué le pasa a éste?” , pensé, “Tengo las luces apagadas, o una goma baja?”. No, nada de eso. El tipo estaba apurado porque a unos cinco metros delante de mí se abría una dársena para el giro a la izquierda y él se quería meter cuanto antes… Yo tenía un auto justo delante de mí, cómo pretendía el coso éste que me apurara???!!!

No le di importancia al paparulo ese, que inmediatamentente me pasó a toda velocidad y me puso una cara de malo que me hizo hacer pis encima. Yo seguí circulando a velocidad normal. Allí fue que ví que el tipo se quedaba parado en la dársena de giro, imposibilitado de moverse por el tráfico que venía en contra y el hecho de que tenía un auto adelante.

Sonriendo de oreja a oreja, le toqué bocina, bajé la ventanilla y lo saludé, aunque con el apuro me olvidé de extender cuatro de mis dedos. Luego le dije en voz inaudible pero modulando muy bien algo que se parecía lejanamente a “bigotudo”… Y seguí mi camino, con la satisfacción del deber cumplido.

Normalmente me hubiera quedado caliente por horas, pero como resolví reírme de él, no volví a recordar el asunto hasta esta mañana cuando pensaba sobre qué cornos escribir…

Florencia always does the funniest things, all product of her beautiful innocence and that playful internal world that she has. Gaby called me on Sunday to tell me about something she had done, and I immediately asked Juan to send me some pictures so I could illustrate this post.

Gaby was grinding mozzarella cheese for some empanadas somebody had ordered. In order to do this, she uses the semi-industrial food processor we have at home, which produces ‘little cheese worms’ very similar to ground beef. Needless to say, Florencia loves those little cheese worms, so she made sure she would be very close to her mother while she was preparing food, ‘stealing’ worms all the time.

Then it was time for lunch, so Gaby asked Flor to set the table, which she did with pleasure, because she just loves to help Mom around the house. My little angel placed the five plates on the table, then the cutlery, the glasses, the trays where and finally the napkins, carefully folded in triangles…

On top of each napkin, and as a gift for the rest of the family, she left one of those little cheese worms she loves so much. That’s my Florcita…

Florencia siempre tiene las ocurrencias más divertidas, que salen de su hermosa inocencia y de ese mundo interior tan juguetón que tiene. Gaby me llamó por teléfono el domingo para contarme lo que había hecho y enseguida le pedí a Juan que me mandara fotos para poder ilustrar este post.

Gaby estaba picando queso muzzarella para preparar unas empanadas que le habían encargado. Para ello usa la picadora cuasi-industrial que tenemos en casa, la que produce unos ‘choricitos’ de queso bien chiquitos y al mejor estilo de la carne picada. De más está decirlo, a Florencia le encantan, así que se ocupó muy bien de quedarse cerca de su madre mientras ella preparaba la comida, robándole ‘quesitos’ a cada rato.

Llegó el momento en que el almuerzo estuvo listo y Gaby le pidió a Flor que pusiera la mesa, lo que ésta hizo con mucho gusto, porque le encanta ayudar a la madre con las cosas de la casa. Mi angelito depositó los cinco platos sobre la mesa, puso los cubiertos, los vasos, los apoya fuentes y las servilletas, cuidadosamente dobladas en triangulitos…

Encima de cada servilleta, y como obsequio a los comensales, dejó uno de esos choricitos de queso que tanto le gustan. Cosas de mi Flor.

Her name is Debbie and she's an MBA graduate from Villanova. She is a little lonely, so she decides to make a video and upload it to eHarmony.com, hoping that she will be able to find her soul mate. She starts talking about herself, but once she mentions how much she loves cats... hilarity ensues.

The video is extremely funny, and is of course a fake. 'Debbie' is a character created by Cara Hartman, a 23 year old self-described 'entertainer'. She is just making her way into show business and her presentation video couldn't have been better.

As if that original video weren't funny enough, the guys at Songify This! produced this amazing remix you can see at the bottom of this post!"

Hola! Me extrañaron? Oh, ya veo. Bueno, no importa, de todos modos volví. Les quería contar una historia sobre una muchacha muy dulce e inocente.

Se llama Debbie y se graduó en la Universidad de Villanova. Ella se siente un poquito solitaria, así que decide hacer un video personal para subirlo a eHarmony.com, con la esperanza de poder encontrar su alma gemela. Comienza a hablar sobre ella y todo va bien, pero una vez que menciona cuánto le gustan los gatos…comienzan las risotadas.

El video es muy divertido, y es por supuesto falso. ‘Debbie’ es un personaje creado por Cara Hartman, una chica de 23 años que se describe a sí misma como comediante. Está tratando de abrirse camino en el mundo del espectáculo, y su carta de presentación no podría haber sido mejor.

Y como si el video en sí no hubiera sido lo suficientemente divertido, la gente de Songify This! produjo este ‘remix’ que es definitivamente una gema!

09/Feb/2012 – Caroina (14) and Florencia (8)

It was a busy weekend, though I get to enjoy some good quality time with my daughters. But on Saturday and Sunday, they spent way too much time in the hotel, while I was working. On Saturday, I couldn’t go pick them up for lunch until about 4:30 PM, and then I took them to the mall. Picked them up once it closed at 9:00 PM and then they kept me company at the hospital until we finally left the place for the day, at 10:30 PM or so.

There weren’t too many options for dinner at that time, so we went for the easiest one: an Applebee’s just around the corner. We walked in, and we weren’t too surprised when we saw it was Karaoke night, because we remembered having read a sign days before.

I remembered my last experience, so I simply found my booth, sat down and proceeded to order my dinner. But not my girls, no, no. They went straight to the ‘stage’ and spent a few minutes browsing the books and writing down songs they would sing later.

Carolina was very nervous, but Florencia had that “I do this every day” attitude that left me very impressed. When it was their turn to sing, both of them got on the improvised stage and began to sing “Somebody to love” by Justin Bieber. Florencia sang lead in the first verse, and then amazed me as she sang different lyrics than those sung by her sister for the second verse.

I was very impressed with my daughters. They sang very well. And they once again showed me why they will never hear the words “shy” or “introverted” whenever people are referring to them. Well, they’re my daughters after all! :-)

Fue un finde ajetreado este que pasó, aunque igual pude disfrutar del tiempo con mis hijas. Pero tanto el sábado como domingo las chicas pasaron demasiado tiempo en el hotel mientras yo trabajaba. El sábado las pasé a buscar para comer a eso de las 4:30 PM y después las llevé al mall. Las pasé a buscar nuevamente cuando cerró a las 9:00 PM y luego me hicieron compañía en el hospital hasta que finalmente salimis a las 10:30 PM.

No habían muchas opciones que digamos a la hora de comer, así que elegí la más facil: un Applebee’s que estaba a la vuelta. Entramos y no nos sorprendimos mucho cuando leímos que era noche de Karaoke porque recordamos haber visto un cartel unos días antes.

Yo recordé mi experiencia anterior, así que simplemente me busqué un lugar para sentarme y comencé a hacer el pedido de comida. Pero no mis hijas, no, no, no. Ellas salieron derechito para el ‘escenario’ y comenzaron a revisar los libros con detenimiento, buscando canciones que les gustaría interpretar.

Carolina estaba muy nerviosa, pero Florencia tenía esa expresión “Io hago todos los días” que me dejó confundido. Cuando fue el turno de ellas de cantar, subieron al escenario improvisado y se lanzaron a interpretaar “Somebody to love” de Justin Bieber. Florencia cantó el primer verso y luego me ‘voló el balero’ cuando en el segundo cantó una letra diferente a la que su hermana interpretabal

Me quedé muy impresionado con las chicas. Cantaronmuy bien. Y nuevamente mostraron como palabras como ‘tímida’ o ‘introvertado’ no se van a usar seguido cuando la gente las describa. Pero bueno, después de todo son mis hijas! :-)

Every weekend is a long weekend to me

I’m getting ready for tonight. I’m going to be leading a software upgrade effort at a hospital, and though this one seems to be a little less complicated than normal, it’s still something that will cause me to be up there until at least midnight. I can tell it’s crunch time, as I’m scheduled to work on four of the next five weekends (March 2nd/3rd being the honourable exception… for now). This of course means I won’t be home on any of those weekends.

I don’t mind this work; in fact, I love my current job. My only concerns are: a) leaving Gaby and the kids home alone so often and b) my own health, as a product of these crazy schedules. Hopefully, it’ll get better with time. I’m very used to working all night, but the prospect of four weekends out of the next five is not that great.

Still, I’m enjoying the time with my daughters here. I left at 7:30 AM this morning, and gave them a call at around 10:30 AM so they would wake up. Came back to the hotel at around 11:00 AM so I can rest a little before I go back at 4:00 PM. I’m currently working on some documentation and dialling in for some conference calls… the girls? In the hot tub, where else! :-)

This hot tub is too deep, she needed some help to look nice for the picture…

Me estoy preparando para esta noche. Voy a conducir una actualización de software en el hospital de aquí, y si bien éste parece ser un proceso menos complicado que lo normal, de todos modos va a requerir que trabaje hasta por lo menos medianoche. Es obvio que estamos en una etapa con mucho trabajo, porque estoy programado para trabajar en cuatro de los cinco próximos fines de semanas (2 y 3 de Marzo parece ser la única excepción… por ahora). Esto por supuesto significa que no voy a estar en casa en ninguno de esos fines de semana.

No me molesta este trabajo; es más, me encanta mi rol actual. Mis únicas preocupaciones son: a) dejar a Gaby y los chicos solos en casa tan seguido y b) mi propia salud, como producto de semejante cronograma. Con suerte, las cosas van a mejorar pronto. Estoy acostumbrado a trabajar toda la noche, pero la idea de tener que hacerlo en cuatro de los próximos fines de semana no es muy atractiva que digamos.

Igual trato de disfrutar mi tiempo con las chicas. Hoy me fui a las 7:30 AM y las llamé a eso de las 10:30 AM para que se despertaran. Volví al hotel a las 11:00 AM así puedo descansar un poquito antes de volver al hospital a las 4:00 PM. En este momento estoy trabajando en unos documentos y conectándome a algunas llamadas en conferencia… las chicas? En la bañera, dónde si no! :-)

I’m travelling again today. I’m going back to Kentucky, to finish the work I started two weeks ago, when I travelled with Juan. That trip was a success, we enjoyed a lot our time together. It was obviously because of it that my daughter Carolina requested to be next. Since I’m travelling for five days again, here she is.

But she’s not by herself.

Florencia was upset because she wanted to come too. “But you can’t yet, Florci, you’re too young (avoid the word ‘little’) to stay in the hotel by yourself while I’m working”. She understood, but she was sad. Carolina then came to the rescue:

- Why don’t you take both of us together? I will take care of Flor.

So here we are. We travelled for about six hours yesterday and we’re about to resume our trip now. But first, we need to try out this jacuzzi! :-)

You better clean up… – Mejor que limpien…

Flor loves going to hotels! – A Flor le encanta ir a los hoteles!

Si, viajando de nuevo. Estoy camino a Kentucky otra vez, para terminar el trabajo que había comenzado hace un par de semanas, cuando viajé con Juan. Ese viaje fue muy bueno, disfrutamos mucho nuestro tiempo juntos. Fue obviamente debido a ello que Carolina pidió que la llevara la próxima vez. Siendo que volví a salir por cinco días, aquí está ella.

Pero no está sola.

Florencia estaba enojada porque ella quería venir también. “Pero no te puedo llevar todavía, Flor, sos muy joven (hay que evitar la palabra ‘chiquita’) para quedarte sola en el hotel mientras yo trabajo”. Ella entendió, pero estaba triste. Carolina salió en su rescate:

- Por qué no nos llevás a las dos? Yo la voy a cuidar.

Así que aquí estamos. Viajamos por seis horas ayer y ya estamos por salir y retomar nuestro viaje hoy. Pero primero hay que probar el jacuzzi! :-)

Tommy (son of my blogbuddies Fede and Coty Lenkiewicz, authors of “De Córdoba a Québec”) was working on a school assignment; he was doing some research about pumas. As he was going through his magazines and internet articles with his dad, he read: “On average, pumas in North America eat a whole dear every seven to ten days”. This immediately prompted Tommy to ask her mom:

- But… where do pumas cook their food? :-)
- Son, they eat them raw!

Tommy’s reaction was just priceless:

- Wow. That’s some disgusting animal!!!

Tommy (hijo de mis blogbuddies Fede y Coty Lenkiewicz, autores de “De Córdoba a Québec”) estaba trabajando en un proyecto para la escuela; tenía que hacer una investigación sobre los pumas. Iba revisando sus revistas y artículos bajados de internet con su papá, quien le leyó: “En América del Norte, en promedio un puma se come un ciervo cada 7 a 10 días”. Tommy inmediatamente le preguntó a su mamá:

- Y dónde lo cocina? :-)
- Hijo, lo come crudo!

La reacción de Tommy fue impagable:

- Pero qué animal más asqueroso!!!

Still thinking about him

I’m on the road again. I made a last minute trip to our offices in South Carolina, and I’m staying here until tomorrow… for now. It’s very busy right now, and I don’t mind that at all. I do have a behavioural problem, though: whenever I’m really, really busy, I tend to get ‘sucked in’. I prioritize my work, make to-do lists and start attacking the different tasks I had identified. As I’m making progress through the list, I get pumped and spend more and more time working. I end up being very tired after these crunch times. I need to work on this.

You might have seen my previous post, it was a picture taken at the Charlotte – Douglas Airport in North Carolina. Even though it was supposed to be a ‘Wordless Wednesday’ post, I published it on Tuesday afternoon, knowing that I wasn’t going to be doing much for my blog for the rest of the week. What I wasn’t expecting was that I would be walking by that same place just one day later! My flight on Wednesday made a stop in Charlotte, so I took a picture again…

Really… what are the chances…

It was the 6th anniversary of my father’s death on Wednesday. As I was expecting, it wasn’t an easy day for me. I was prepared for it and I wasn’t even too surprised about how and how fast it happened, so that has never been an issue. I hadn’t been living with him since I was six years old, and we hadn’t been even living in the same city since I was 11. I wouldn’t see him much, of course, and only when I was old enough to travel to Necochea alone I could start to go back home for a weekend. Us moving to Canada didn’t help much either… but in spite of the physical distance, we always were able to keep the relationship very close. I’m just not used to him not being on the other side of the phone anymore…

I still remember how proud he was when I passed the entry tests and got accepted at Carlos Pellegrini school, one of the most prestigious in the country (back then, because if you saw it now…). I was 12 years old, and that was the first time –and one of the few– I had ever heard somebody say: “I’m proud of you”. I remember where we were, waiting for the traffic light at the corner of Avenue 75 and Diagonal San Martín. I remember that I was so taken by surprise by his comments that I started to cry, and he pretended he hadn’t seen me doing that. That’s the kind of guy he was.

I wrote something on Facebook, and I was overwhelmed by the nice comments I received from my family and friends. Some of my brothers remembered Dad as well, and so did Santi and my niece –and goddaughter– Valeria. The theme was pretty much the same: my Dad lives in all five of his sons (six if we count my brother Paco, whom he always treated as if he was his own son, even though he comes from my mother’s second marriage). And of course he does. He lives in us through all the songs we continue to sing, through all the silly, funny things we say or do everyday and also through the fact that we are as proud of our children as he was proud of us. I think of him every time I wear my red sweater on top of a shirt, as silly as this sounds. That’s the kind of clothes he would normally wear at work when I was a kid. Years later, I ended wearing the same outfit, and I think I didn’t even think about it as first.

My father was not able to attend secondary school (it was quite common back then), but he still made sure he had some basic knowledge to do well enough at work, and he did. He was a humble man, and the best thing I can say about him is that he was particularly proud of learning from his own kids (how many people we can say this about?). You could see his face whenever Guillermo, Sebastian, any of us was teaching him how to do something. He seemed so pleased!

Exactly a year before his passing, he was spending some time with us at home in Waterloo. He stayed with us for a whole month and a half, thanks to my brother Guillermo who invited him and his wife Cristina. We had a fantastic time together, and –like I have said before– we rediscovered each other as two adults, and took our relationship to a different level. I will be eternally grateful to my brother and his wife for having given me, Gaby and the kids the chance to spend those 45 days with Dad. They were some of the best days of my live, and I know that he enjoyed visiting his children a lot as well. He saw me and my brother living his dream of living in North America, and we could tell how happy and proud he was.

My dad was a simple guy. He lived a simple life, and he liked simple things. He loved his wife, he loved his kids and their families, he loved to put live coal under big chunks of raw meat every night, and he loved to sing. That was pretty much my dad in a nutshell.

I’m ever so happy I’m following his steps so accurately.

Estoy en la ruta de nuevo. Tuve que hacer un viaje de último momento a Carolina del Sur, y me quedo hasta mañana… por ahora. Ando bien ocupado por estos días, y eso no me molesta para nada. Eso sí, tengo un problema de comportamiento: cuando tengo mucho trabajo, tiendo a ser ‘absorbido’. Le doy prioridades a las tareas que tengo asignadas, me armo una lista de tareas a coumplir y comienzo el ataque. A medida que progreso, me entusiasmo y me paso más y más tiempo trabajando. Siempre termino exhausto luego de estos períodos de mucho laburo. Tengo que mejorar en esto.

Habrán visto mi post anterior, fue una foto que había sacado hace tiempo en el Aeropuerto de Charlotte – Douglas en North Carolina. A pesar de que se suponía que era un post para ‘Wordless Wednesday’, lo publiqué el martes por la tarde, porque sabía que no iba a andar mucho por mi blog por el resto de la semana. Lo que no me esperaba era que iba a pasar por ese mismo lugar sólo un día después! Mi vuelo del miércoles hizo una escala en Charlotte, así que volví a sacar una foto, que pueden ver arriba…

El miércoles también fue el sexto aniversario de la muerte de mi padre. Como esperaba, no fue un día fácil para mí. Yo estaba preparado y ni siquiera me sorprendí mucho sobre la forma y qué tan rápido todo sucedió, así que eso nunca fue un problema. Yo no había vivido con él en la misma casa desde mis seis años, y ni siquiera vivíamos en la misma ciudad para cuando tenía 11. No lo veía mucho, por supuesto, y sólo una vez que fui lo suficientemente grande para viajar a Necochea solo pude comenzar a hacerme escapadas de fin de semana. Nuestra mudanza a Canadá tampoco ayudó mucho que digamos… pero a pesar de la distancia física, siempre tuvimos una relación muy cercana. Como dije, hice mis paces con su pérdida hace ya mucho tiempo, pero no me acostumbro aún a su ausencia, a que no esté del otro lado del teléfono…

Todavía recuerdo lo orgulloso que estaba cuando aprobé los exámenes de ingreso a la Escuela Carlos Pellegrini, una de las más prestigiosas del país (bueno, en ese tiempo, porque si la vieran ahora…) Yo tenía doce años, y esa fue la primera vez –y una de las pocas– en que escuché a alguien decir: “Estoy orgulloso de vos”. Recuerdo exactamente dónde estábamos, esperando el semáforo del cruce de Avenida 75 y Diagonal San Martín. Tambíen recuerdo que sus palabras me tomaron tan de sorpresa que comencé a llorar, y el pretendió no haberme visto para que no me sintiera avergonzado. Esa era la clase de persona que mi viejo era.

Singing on my 39th birthday – Cantando en mi cumpleaños #39

Escribí algo en Facebook el miércoles, y me sentí muy reconfortado por los comentarios que recibí de mi familia y amigos. Algunos de mis hermanos también recordaron a Papá por esa vía, lo mismo que Santi y mi sobrina –y ahijada– Valeria. El tema fue el mismo: mi padre vive en sus cinco hijos (bueno, seis si contamos a Paco, a quien siempre trató como si fuera suyo, a pesar de que es producto del segundo matrimonio de mi madre). Y por supuesto que es así. El vive en nosotros a través de las canciones que aún cantamos, las locuras y cosas divertidas que hacemos o decimos todos los días, o el hecho de que estamos tan orgullosos de nuestros hijos como él lo estaba de nosotros. Pienso en él cada vez que me pongo mi sweater rojo sobre mi camisa, por ejemplo. Es que es el tipo de vestimenta que el úsaba normalmente en el trabajo cuando yo era chico. Años después, yo terminé vistiéndome igual, y creo que al principio ni me dí cuenta.

Mi padre no pudo terminar la escuela secundaria (algo que era común entonces), pero de todos modos se las arregló para tener la instrucción necesaria para hacer su trabajo. Era un hombre humilde, y lo mejor que recuerdo de él es que le daba mucho orgullo el poder aprender de sus propios hijos (de cuántas personas podemos decir esto?). Había que verle la cara cada vez que Guillermo, Sebastián o cualquiera de los otros le enseñábamos algo. El parecía estar tan contento!

Un año exacto antes de su partida, estuvo pasando unos cuantos días con nosotros en Waterloo. Se quedó por un mes y medio, gracias a mi hermano Guillermo que los invitó (a él y a su esposa Cristina). La pasamos genial, y –como sé que dije alguna otra vez– nos re-descubrimos como dos adultos y nuestra relación pasó a un plano completamente distinto. Le voy a estar eternamente agradecido a mi hermano y su esposa por habernos dado a Gaby, los chicos y yo la chance de haber pasado esos 45 días con Papá. Fueron de los mejores días de mi vida, y yo sé que el disfrutó de visitar a sus hijos también. El nos vio a mi hermano y a mí cumplir su sueño de vivir en Norte América, y se veía claramente lo feliz y orgulloso que eso lo ponía.

Mi viejo fue un tipo simple. Vivió una vida simple, y le gustaban las cosas simples. Amaba a su esposa, a sus hijso y sus familias; amaba poner pedazos de carne cruda arriba del carbón todas las noches, y amaba la música. De eso se trataba mi viejo, básicamente.

Me encanta ver que estoy siguiendo sus pasos tan adecuadamente.

Second post dedicated to the beautiful, so adorable Shiloh. She’s the daughter of our friend Daniel, who’s living with her girlfriend (and my ‘adopted’ niece Sileny). I’m assuming it was bedtime, because of what Shiloh said. Looking at Sileny, she observed:

- Sileny, your earrings are beautiful. And your pajamas are beautiful! Sileny, your everything is beautiful!

My beloved niece commented: “I’ve never felt so beautiful”… Well, they say kids and drunks never lie, right?

Segundo post que le dedico a la hermosa y adorable Shiloh. Ella es la hija de nuestro amigo Daniel, quien vive con su novia (y mi sobrina ‘adoptiva’ Sileny). Se ve que era hora de ir a la cama, mi conjetura debido a lo que Shiloh dijo. Mirándola a Sile, observó:

- Sileny, tus aritos son hermosos. Y tus pijamas son hermosos! Sileny, tu todo es hermoso!

Mi querida sobrina comentó: “Nunca me sentí tan hermosa”… Bueno, dicen por ahí que los niños y los borrachos siempre dicen la verdad, no?

Musical Sundays #13 – Les Luthiers

I can not believe that I haven’t dedicated any post to the wonderful Les Luthiers yet!!! This incredibly talented Argentine comedy-musical group is very popular in all of Ibero America and has been performing for over 44 years. Founded by the late Gerardo Masana, this group has been making incredibly good music and brilliant comedy for many years, with the aid of very peculiar instruments. Each one of its current members are very talented and highly recognized (almost revered) artists on their own: Carlos López Puccio is an extremely accomplished violin, viola and cello player, but he’s also one of the most prestigious choir conductors in Latin America. Jorge Maronna is just about the best guitar player (and bass, banjo, charango, etc) I’ve ever seen; Carlos Núñez Cortés is a superb piano player, but can also play all kinds of wind instruments. Daniel Rabinovich is the multi-instrumentalist of the group, and also a great comedian, and Marcos Mundstock plays the solemn host with unparalleled talent (besides having a wonderful baritone voice). Ernesto Acher, who left in 1986, was –like Rabinovich– somebody who could play pretty much anything, and like his former colleague, was outstanding with all of them.

Their wacky instruments are legendary, like the ‘latin’ (a violin made with a can of ham from Switzerland) or the ‘bass barriltono’ (a double bass made with a barrel, and that can only be played by getting inside of it. Oh, and it has wheels). In many cases, the instruments are specifically created for one song (like the ‘bolarmonio’ that you will see in the third video). Sometimes, however, they barely need of any of these instruments to make fantastic music, like you will see below.

I firmly believe that Les Luthiers are among the finest contributions of my home country to the World Arts. I hope you enjoy their music… and their humour!

No puedo creer que no les haya dedicado ningún post a los increíbles Les Luthiers todavía!!! Este increíblemente talentoso grupo argentino de comedia y humor musical es muy popular en toda Iberoamérica y llevan tocando juntos más de 44 años. Fundado por el fallecido Gerardo Masana, este grupo ha venido haciendo increíblemente buena música y brillante comedia por años, siempre con la ayuda de sus extraños instrumentos. Cada uno de sus miembros son muy talentosos y reconocidos (casi reverenciados) artistas individualmente: Carlos López Puccio no sólo es un muy diestro intérprete de violín, viola y cello, sino que también uno de los directores corales más prestigiosos de Latinoamérica. Jorge Maronna es mejor intérprete de guitarra (y bajo, charango, banjo, etc) que yo haya visto; Carlos Núñez Cortés es un fantástico pianista, pero también toca instrumentos de viento; Daniel Rabinovich es el ‘comodín’ del grupo, tocando muchos instrumentos, pero por sobre todo un gran comediante, y Marcos Mundstock juega el rol del presentador solemne con talento sin par (además de tener una gran voz e barítono). Ernesto Acher, quien dejara el grupo en 1986, era –como Rabinovich– un instrumentista muy versátil, y podía tocar prácticamente de todo; como su ex-colega, era brillante en cada uno de los instrumentos que tocaba.

Hablando de los instrumentos… son legendarios, como el ‘latin’ (un violín hecho con una lata de jamón de Suiza) o el ‘bajo barriltono’ (un contrabajo cuya caja es un barril, y que sólo puede ser interpretado metiéndose dentro de él. Ah, y tiene ruedas). En muchos casos, los instrumentos son creados específicamente para una canción o se escribe la canción alrededor del instrumento nuevo (como el ‘bolarmonio’ que verán en el tercer video). Hay ocasiones, sin embargo, en las que apenas si necesitan de esos instrumentos para hacer una música increíble, como verán más abajo.

Creo firmemente que Les Luthiers son una de las mayores contribuciones de mi país de origen al Mundo de las Artes. Espero que disfruten de su música… y de su humor!

My travel buddy

I’m near Louisville, KY until Sunday. But I didn’t fly this time! After finding out that it would actually take longer for me to get here by plane than by car, I decided to drive down here. But I brought a travel buddy!

Juan is staying with me and we’re having a lot of fun. Having him in the car was great for me, the 8 hours of driving just flew by. I love having the chance to bond with him for a few days. He loves the eating out and staying at a hotel part, of course… plus having Dad all for himself.

We checked in at a Holiday Inn and we got a room with a Jacuzzi. We both went in and watched TV from it for about an hour; then Juan got up to get out and… the water level went down. We sprayed the whole room with lots of soapy water, though most of it went straight into my face! :-)

Juan loved the Jacuzzi so much that he went in again just a couple hours later. The problem this time is that he poured too much shampoo…

Estoy cerca de Louisville, KY hasta el domingo. Pero esta vez no volé! Luego de darme cuenta de que iba a tardar más en avión que si venía en auto, decidí manejar desde casa. Pero me traje un compañero de aventuras!

Juan se está quedando conmigo y la estamos pasando genial. Tenerlo de copiloto fue buenísimo, se me pasaron volando las 8 horas de viaje. Me encanta tener la chance de pasar unos días con él. Y a él le gusta salir a comer y estar en un hotel, por supuesto… además del hecho de tenerlo a Papá para él solo.

Estamos en un Holiday Inn y nos tocó una habitación con Jacuzzi. Nos metimos y miramos la tele desde ahí por una hora; cuando Juan se levantó para salir… el nivel del agua bajó. Los tubos de agua quedaron al descubierto y salpicamos agua con jabón por toda la habitación, aunque la mayoría de los chorros fueron directo a mi cara! :-)

A Juan le gustó tanto el Jacuzzi que se volvió a meter un par de horas más tarde. El problema esta vez fue que se le fue la mano con el shampoo…

My niece Sofía loves to sing. She spends hours every day singing in front of the TV, while listening to her favourite CDs or just singing by herself, for the fun of it. Being around her and listening to her beautiful voice is a delight; it’s something that has been very hard to forget, even after she left back home two month ago.

Here she is singing a song called “How to get an elephant to sleep”. Watch her as she goes from normal voice to ‘angry’ voice, then an extremely high pitched one, then a silly one, then back to ‘angry’… she’s so funny. She even had time to tease me in the middle of her singing! She called me ‘Willy’ (my older brother’s name) for the entire two weeks she was home. Once my brother Willy arrived too… she called him ‘Gabriel’!

A mi sobrinita Sofía le encanta cantar. Se pasa horas cantando en frente de la TV, o mientras escucha sus CDs favoritos, o simplemente cantando ella sola, por puro placer. Estar con ella y escuchar su hermosa voz es un deleite, algo muy difícil de olvidar, aunque ya hayan pasado dos meses desde que se volvió para su casa.

Aquí la tienen en plenitud, cantando una canción titulada “Para dormir a un elefante”. Miren cómo pasa de una voz normal a otra ‘enojada’, luego a una altísima, luego una voz de payasa, después otra vez a ‘enojada’… es tan divertida! Si hasta tuvo tiempo de bromear conmigo mientras cantaba! Me llamó ‘Willy’ (el nombre de mi hermano mayor) durante las dos semanas que estuvo en casa. Cuando mi hermano Guillermo llegó de visita también… a él le decía ‘Gabriel’!

Espero que disfruten este video tanto como lo hemos disfrutado nosotros. Y ya verán más!

Love and marriage

Santi and I were talking about some girl I thought he liked (OK, maybe we weren’t talking and I was teasing him about her, because Santi would never confess to something like that). When I asked him about a guy his sister liked, however, he did feel like talking:

- Dad… Come on, he’s like two years older than her!

I asked what the problem was with that.

-You don’t go out with girls who are younger than you!

- Well, that depends. Back in the 80’s, when I was your age, I would go out with girls who were two or three years younger than me… Girls are normally more mature than boys of the same age, you know.

- Well, Dad… you’re talking about 30 years ago; society has experienced a few changes since!

- (Thanks for reminding me of my age!) I know… Look at my grandmother, for example. She got married when she was 15, and by the age of 16 she had already given birth to my dad and his twin brother. That was totally normal back then.

- Oh, wow… Now you’re talking about the wrong eighties…

- ?

- Yes, the 1880’s… (laughs)

Oh, what a smartass!

Santi y yo habábamos de una chica que yo creía que le gustaba a él (OK, no estábamos hablando sino que yo lo estaba indagando, porque Santi en su vida confesaría algo así). Cuando le pregunté por un chico que le gustaba a su hermana, sin embargo, sí tuvo ganas de hablar:

- Papá… En serio… es como dos años más grande que ella!

Le pregunté cuál era el problema con eso.

- Cómo vas a salir con chicas que son más chicas que vos!

- Bueno, eso depende. En los ochentas, cuando yo tenía tu edad, yo por lo general salía con chicas dos o tres años más chicas… Las mujeres son más maduras que los varones de la misma edad, sabés eso.

- Bueno, Pa… estás hablando de hace 30 años; la sociedad ha experimentado algunos cambios desde entonces!

- (Gracias por recordarme que soy un viejo choto!) Ya sé… Mirá el caso de mi abuela, por ejemplo. Se casó a los 15 y para los 16 años ya había tenido a mi papá y su hermano gemelo. Eso era totalmente normal para esa época.

- Ah, bueno… Ahora estás hablando de los otros ochentas…

- ?

- Y sí, hablás de 1880! (se va, riendo)

Ruining whatever good things we have left…

With more than 50 editions already, The Children’s Festival of Necochea, my hometown, is more than a tradition; it’s one of those events that define a city, like the Brazilian-style Carnaval in Gualeguachú or the Oktoberfest in Villa General Belgrano. Me, my brothers and my cousins have not only enjoyed the many shows and events that are normally offered during those days (second week of January) but also have taken part of the festival, as we have been on the floats that were assembled by the Liga de Madres de Familia (something similar to the American Family Assocation, but less conservative) of which my grandmother abuela Haydée was a very active member.

With the years, friends of mine who are dedicated to the arts (like my friend María Marta) would visit my hometown and alternated work and pleasure (though few things bring more pleasure than working for kids). Interest decreased over the last few years, something that many quickly blamed on the municipal governments, because (in a typical necochense fashion, regrettably) they didn’t seem to care too much about tourism and offering good services to those visiting our beaches. That’s how the festival began to languish, less artists were interested in coming, and less floats would be taking part of the parade. But there was no way to predict the shameful events that would shock necochenses around the world would feel a couple of weeks ago.

This year’s edition was marred by the use and abuse of political propaganda during the inaugural parade (something that, as the local newspaper “Ecos Diarios” points out, is a special skill the current government has; they can turn anything into a political event).

Right from the beginning, many artists and other workers began to complain about the horrific conditions in which they had to work… and live. Some were placed in a hotel that had been closed years before over safety and health issues. They didn’t have water (or fire extinguishers, for example). Shows and events were virtually not promoted, which caused most of them to be very poorly attended. That wasn’t all. The venues had many sound and hydro problems, to the point that actors had to yell for people to hear them.

The artists made a mistake they would regret: they had dignity. They complained to the Municipality through the Secretary of Tourism. The Necochean government took over about a month ago, and is aligned with the party in power at a national level. Their response was also very true to the style of the governing party: violence and intolerance.

A group of goons suspected to have links to the Secretary of Tourism showed up at a restaurant where one of these groups of actors that had complained were eating and beat the living daylight out of them, in front of everybody, with the impunity of those who know they’re ‘protected'. None of the important or respectable local media even mentioned this news, something very suspicious. Just a couple of little online tabloids, that was it.

This group of actors and crew went to the police and pressed charges; then they immediately left a city that had given them such a bad welcome and never cared to protect them. The attacks and threats continued, so the rest of the artists left soon after and the festival came to a screeching halt. It was a huge scandal and a very sad day for my hometown, which many try to ignore, either because it’s convenient or because they’re afraid. With charges pressed and everything, there are still no news about any possible consequences for Secretary Trobo or her acolytes, because in Argentina, like the wannabe mafia cheef in charge of the Argentine Soccer Association likes to say, “everything passes”.

What won’t pass so easily is the damage this people have done to the most important event of my hometown. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 2013 Edition of the Festival ends being cancelled due to the lack of interest.

Because… who would go to a place knowing that not only they will live in inhuman conditions, but also will be forced to performed on unacceptable venues with virtually no public? And even more, knowing that if they dare to pretend to have decent living and working conditions, they might end in a hospital?

I keep on saying that even after so many years and in spite of the fact that I’m so far away, Argentina hurts. But Necochea hurts even more these days.

Con más de 50 ediciones a cuestas, el Festival Infantil de Necochea, mi ciudad natal, es ya mucho más que una tradición; es una de esos eventos que definen a una ciudad, como lo es el Carnaval en Gualeguachú o el Oktoberfest en Villa General Belgrano. Tanto mis hermanos, como también mis primos y por supuesto yo mismo no sólo hemos disfrutado de los muchísimos espectáculos que se brindan durante esa semana (la segunda de Enero) sino que hasta también hemos sido parte de ellos, desfilando en las carrozas de la Liga de Madres de Familia, de la cual mi abuela Haydée era una muy activa participante.

Con los años, amigos míos que se dedican a la actuación (como mi querida María Marta) visitaron mi ciudad natal y alternaron el trabajo y el placer (aunque pocas cosas sean tan placenteras como trabajar para los niños). En los últimos años hubo un decrecimiento en el interés que genera este festival, por el que muchos se apresuraron a responsabilizar a los gobiernos municipales de turno, que (bien a la usanza necochense, lamentablemente) parecía darle muy poca importancia y relevancia a la cuestión turística. Así fue que el festival comenzó a languidecer, menos artistas se acercaron y menos carrozas desfilaron. Pero nada presagiaba la vergüenza y el escarnio que los necochenses de todo el mundo iríamos a pasar un par de semanas atrás.

La versión de este año estuvo manchada por el uso y abuso de la propaganda política en pleno desfile de carrozas (como bien dice el editorial del “Ecos Diarios”, es una habilidad especial que tiene el gobierno de turno esa de convertir cualquier cosa en un evento político).

Ni bien iniciada la Edición 2012, muchos artistas y talleristas comenzaron a quejarse de las horrendas condiciones de trabajo, y de vida. Algunos fueron alojados en un hotel que hacía tiempo que había sido clausurado y en el que no tenían agua (ni matafuegos, por ejemplo). La promoción de los espectáculos fue nula, lo que causó que la mayoría de las funciones se hicieran a sala prácticamente vacía. No terminó todo allí. Las salas contaban con innumerables problemas de sonido y energía, al punto que más de una obra se tuvo que hacerse a los gritos pelados.

Los artistas cometieron un pecado imperdonable: tuvieron dignidad y se quejaron a la Municipalidad a través de la Secretaría de Turismo. El gobierno necochense asumió hace sólo un mes y es afín al gobierno nacional. La respuesta municipal fue bien al estilo del partido gobernante: violencia e intolerancia.

Un grupo de matones que se supone responden a la Secretaria de Turismo irrumpió en un restaurante donde se encontraba cenando una de las compañías que se había quejado por las malas condiciones y los molieron a patadas delante de todos, con la impunidad de aquél que se sabe protegido. Ninguno de los medios importantes de la ciudad se hizo 'eco' del asunto, algo muy sospechoso.

Esta compañía de artistas radicó la pertinente denuncia y se fue inmediatamente de la ciudad que tan mal los acogió y nunca los protegió. Los ataques siguieron, así que muy pronto se fue todo el resto yel festival quedó trunco. Una verdadera vergüenza que muchos callan, por conveniencia o por miedo. Con denuncias de por medio y todo, aún no se habla de que vayan a haber consecuencias para la Secretaria Trobo o sus secuaces, porque en Argentina, como bien dice el pichón de mafioso que está a cargo de la Asociación de Fútbol Argentino, "todo pasa".

Lo que no va a pasar así nomás el es daño que esta gentuza le ha hecho al evento más importante de mi ciudad natal. No me extrañaría para nada que el del año que viene se termine cancelando por la falta de interés.

Porque... quién iría a un lugar donde sabe que no sólo va a vivir en condiciones paupérrimas, sino que también va a actuar en escenarios no aptos y sin público? Y además sabiendo que si tiene el tupé de pretender vivir en condiciones dignas, es posible que termine en el hospital?

Siempre digo que, aún después de tanto tiempo y a la distancia, Argentina me duele. Por estos días, Necochea me duele mucho más.

It finally happened

Exactly a year ago, my blog was at its peak in terms of popularity. I had averages of 140/150 visits per day and many friends and blog buddies would come to leave their comments very often -or just to heckle me! :-)

Then my blog was hacked, and it was very hard to come back. In fact, the main reason I did return and continued blogging was the overwhelming support I received from the same friends and blog buddies who had been reading my blog until then (plus, of course, those who have been with me always, regardless of whether they ‘read me’ or not). I did come back, but my blog would never be the same. My mood was a big factor here too. I struggled a lot to keep it floating and I even managed to get near to an average of 100 visits per day during the summer. But after that, it was another free fall.

I love stats, and my numbers right now are horrific. I guess it’s a combination of me not writing at the crazy pace I used to, a decrease in the quality of what I write, and the fact that I’m not as active as I used to be. I’m not complaining about the results, it’s something you can expect.

But when I resumed my blogging last week, I had a goal: I want to bring LfW back to life. I know it’s going to cost me dearly, but I also know that I can do it. One of the short term goals I self imposed were to make it to 100 visitors for one day. I had to be patient… but it finally happened!

The next short term goal is ‘write something that actually has some value’, of course. We’ll see how I do with that… :-)

Hace sólo un año, mi blog estaba en la cúspide de su popularidad. Tenía promedios de 140/150 visitas por día y muchos amigos y blog buddies pasaban por aquí para dejar sus comentarios muy seguido –o al menos para verduguearme! :-)

Luego mi blog fue hackeado, y fue muy difícil poder volver. De hecho, la razón principal por la que continué blogueando fue el impresionante apoyo que recibí de esos mismos amigos y blogbuddies que habían estado leyendo este blog hasta tencons (más, por supuesto, esos que han estado conmigo siempre, me ‘lean’ o no). Si bien terminé volviendo, mi blog nunca volvió a ser el mismo. Mis ganas (o falta de) fueron un factor importante. Me costó un perú mantenerlo a flote, y apenas si llegué a rascar un promedio muy cercano a las 100 visitas diarias durante el verano. Pero luego de esos meses, me vine en picada.

Amo las estadísticas, y mis números hoy en día son horribles. Es una combinación de haber bajado ese ritmo insano que tenía para escribir, un decrecimiento en la calidad de lo que escribo y el hecho de que no estoy ni por asomo tan activo en la blogosfera como supe estarlo. No me quejo de los resultados, porque me parecen esperables.

Pero cuando volví a bloguear la semana pasada, me fijé una meta: revivir al pobre LfW. Sé que me va a costar mucho, pero también sé que puedo hacerlo. Una de las metas de corto plazo que me impuse era la de volver a tener 100 visitas en un día. Tuve que tener paciencia… pero finalmente ocurrió!

La próxima meta es por supuesto ‘escribir algo que tenga algún valor’. Pero bueno, para eso falta, che! :-)
