I can not believe that I haven’t dedicated any post to the wonderful Les Luthiers yet!!! This incredibly talented Argentine comedy-musical group is very popular in all of Ibero America and has been performing for over 44 years. Founded by the late Gerardo Masana, this group has been making incredibly good music and brilliant comedy for many years, with the aid of very peculiar instruments. Each one of its current members are very talented and highly recognized (almost revered) artists on their own: Carlos López Puccio is an extremely accomplished violin, viola and cello player, but he’s also one of the most prestigious choir conductors in Latin America. Jorge Maronna is just about the best guitar player (and bass, banjo, charango, etc) I’ve ever seen; Carlos Núñez Cortés is a superb piano player, but can also play all kinds of wind instruments. Daniel Rabinovich is the multi-instrumentalist of the group, and also a great comedian, and Marcos Mundstock plays the solemn host with unparalleled talent (besides having a wonderful baritone voice). Ernesto Acher, who left in 1986, was –like Rabinovich– somebody who could play pretty much anything, and like his former colleague, was outstanding with all of them.

Their wacky instruments are legendary, like the ‘latin’ (a violin made with a can of ham from Switzerland) or the ‘bass barriltono’ (a double bass made with a barrel, and that can only be played by getting inside of it. Oh, and it has wheels). In many cases, the instruments are specifically created for one song (like the ‘bolarmonio’ that you will see in the third video). Sometimes, however, they barely need of any of these instruments to make fantastic music, like you will see below.

I firmly believe that Les Luthiers are among the finest contributions of my home country to the World Arts. I hope you enjoy their music… and their humour!

No puedo creer que no les haya dedicado ningún post a los increíbles Les Luthiers todavía!!! Este increíblemente talentoso grupo argentino de comedia y humor musical es muy popular en toda Iberoamérica y llevan tocando juntos más de 44 años. Fundado por el fallecido Gerardo Masana, este grupo ha venido haciendo increíblemente buena música y brillante comedia por años, siempre con la ayuda de sus extraños instrumentos. Cada uno de sus miembros son muy talentosos y reconocidos (casi reverenciados) artistas individualmente: Carlos López Puccio no sólo es un muy diestro intérprete de violín, viola y cello, sino que también uno de los directores corales más prestigiosos de Latinoamérica. Jorge Maronna es mejor intérprete de guitarra (y bajo, charango, banjo, etc) que yo haya visto; Carlos Núñez Cortés es un fantástico pianista, pero también toca instrumentos de viento; Daniel Rabinovich es el ‘comodín’ del grupo, tocando muchos instrumentos, pero por sobre todo un gran comediante, y Marcos Mundstock juega el rol del presentador solemne con talento sin par (además de tener una gran voz e barítono). Ernesto Acher, quien dejara el grupo en 1986, era –como Rabinovich– un instrumentista muy versátil, y podía tocar prácticamente de todo; como su ex-colega, era brillante en cada uno de los instrumentos que tocaba.

Hablando de los instrumentos… son legendarios, como el ‘latin’ (un violín hecho con una lata de jamón de Suiza) o el ‘bajo barriltono’ (un contrabajo cuya caja es un barril, y que sólo puede ser interpretado metiéndose dentro de él. Ah, y tiene ruedas). En muchos casos, los instrumentos son creados específicamente para una canción o se escribe la canción alrededor del instrumento nuevo (como el ‘bolarmonio’ que verán en el tercer video). Hay ocasiones, sin embargo, en las que apenas si necesitan de esos instrumentos para hacer una música increíble, como verán más abajo.

Creo firmemente que Les Luthiers son una de las mayores contribuciones de mi país de origen al Mundo de las Artes. Espero que disfruten de su música… y de su humor!

My travel buddy

I’m near Louisville, KY until Sunday. But I didn’t fly this time! After finding out that it would actually take longer for me to get here by plane than by car, I decided to drive down here. But I brought a travel buddy!

Juan is staying with me and we’re having a lot of fun. Having him in the car was great for me, the 8 hours of driving just flew by. I love having the chance to bond with him for a few days. He loves the eating out and staying at a hotel part, of course… plus having Dad all for himself.

We checked in at a Holiday Inn and we got a room with a Jacuzzi. We both went in and watched TV from it for about an hour; then Juan got up to get out and… the water level went down. We sprayed the whole room with lots of soapy water, though most of it went straight into my face! :-)

Juan loved the Jacuzzi so much that he went in again just a couple hours later. The problem this time is that he poured too much shampoo…

Estoy cerca de Louisville, KY hasta el domingo. Pero esta vez no volé! Luego de darme cuenta de que iba a tardar más en avión que si venía en auto, decidí manejar desde casa. Pero me traje un compañero de aventuras!

Juan se está quedando conmigo y la estamos pasando genial. Tenerlo de copiloto fue buenísimo, se me pasaron volando las 8 horas de viaje. Me encanta tener la chance de pasar unos días con él. Y a él le gusta salir a comer y estar en un hotel, por supuesto… además del hecho de tenerlo a Papá para él solo.

Estamos en un Holiday Inn y nos tocó una habitación con Jacuzzi. Nos metimos y miramos la tele desde ahí por una hora; cuando Juan se levantó para salir… el nivel del agua bajó. Los tubos de agua quedaron al descubierto y salpicamos agua con jabón por toda la habitación, aunque la mayoría de los chorros fueron directo a mi cara! :-)

A Juan le gustó tanto el Jacuzzi que se volvió a meter un par de horas más tarde. El problema esta vez fue que se le fue la mano con el shampoo…

My niece Sofía loves to sing. She spends hours every day singing in front of the TV, while listening to her favourite CDs or just singing by herself, for the fun of it. Being around her and listening to her beautiful voice is a delight; it’s something that has been very hard to forget, even after she left back home two month ago.

Here she is singing a song called “How to get an elephant to sleep”. Watch her as she goes from normal voice to ‘angry’ voice, then an extremely high pitched one, then a silly one, then back to ‘angry’… she’s so funny. She even had time to tease me in the middle of her singing! She called me ‘Willy’ (my older brother’s name) for the entire two weeks she was home. Once my brother Willy arrived too… she called him ‘Gabriel’!

I hope you enjoy this video as much as we do. There’s more to come!

A mi sobrinita Sofía le encanta cantar. Se pasa horas cantando en frente de la TV, o mientras escucha sus CDs favoritos, o simplemente cantando ella sola, por puro placer. Estar con ella y escuchar su hermosa voz es un deleite, algo muy difícil de olvidar, aunque ya hayan pasado dos meses desde que se volvió para su casa.

Aquí la tienen en plenitud, cantando una canción titulada “Para dormir a un elefante”. Miren cómo pasa de una voz normal a otra ‘enojada’, luego a una altísima, luego una voz de payasa, después otra vez a ‘enojada’… es tan divertida! Si hasta tuvo tiempo de bromear conmigo mientras cantaba! Me llamó ‘Willy’ (el nombre de mi hermano mayor) durante las dos semanas que estuvo en casa. Cuando mi hermano Guillermo llegó de visita también… a él le decía ‘Gabriel’!

Espero que disfruten este video tanto como lo hemos disfrutado nosotros. Y ya verán más!

Santi and I were talking about some girl I thought he liked (OK, maybe we weren’t talking and I was teasing him about her, because Santi would never confess to something like that). When I asked him about a guy his sister liked, however, he did feel like talking:

- Dad… Come on, he’s like two years older than her!

I asked what the problem was with that.

-You don’t go out with girls who are younger than you!

- Well, that depends. Back in the 80’s, when I was your age, I would go out with girls who were two or three years younger than me… Girls are normally more mature than boys of the same age, you know.

- Well, Dad… you’re talking about 30 years ago; society has experienced a few changes since!

- (Thanks for reminding me of my age!) I know… Look at my grandmother, for example. She got married when she was 15, and by the age of 16 she had already given birth to my dad and his twin brother. That was totally normal back then.

- Oh, wow… Now you’re talking about the wrong eighties…

- ?

- Yes, the 1880’s… (laughs)

Oh, what a smartass!

Santi y yo habábamos de una chica que yo creía que le gustaba a él (OK, no estábamos hablando sino que yo lo estaba indagando, porque Santi en su vida confesaría algo así). Cuando le pregunté por un chico que le gustaba a su hermana, sin embargo, sí tuvo ganas de hablar:

- Papá… En serio… es como dos años más grande que ella!

Le pregunté cuál era el problema con eso.

- Cómo vas a salir con chicas que son más chicas que vos!

- Bueno, eso depende. En los ochentas, cuando yo tenía tu edad, yo por lo general salía con chicas dos o tres años más chicas… Las mujeres son más maduras que los varones de la misma edad, sabés eso.

- Bueno, Pa… estás hablando de hace 30 años; la sociedad ha experimentado algunos cambios desde entonces!

- (Gracias por recordarme que soy un viejo choto!) Ya sé… Mirá el caso de mi abuela, por ejemplo. Se casó a los 15 y para los 16 años ya había tenido a mi papá y su hermano gemelo. Eso era totalmente normal para esa época.

- Ah, bueno… Ahora estás hablando de los otros ochentas…

- ?

- Y sí, hablás de 1880! (se va, riendo)

Ruining whatever good things we have left…

With more than 50 editions already, The Children’s Festival of Necochea, my hometown, is more than a tradition; it’s one of those events that define a city, like the Brazilian-style Carnaval in Gualeguachú or the Oktoberfest in Villa General Belgrano. Me, my brothers and my cousins have not only enjoyed the many shows and events that are normally offered during those days (second week of January) but also have taken part of the festival, as we have been on the floats that were assembled by the Liga de Madres de Familia (something similar to the American Family Assocation, but less conservative) of which my grandmother abuela Haydée was a very active member.

With the years, friends of mine who are dedicated to the arts (like my friend María Marta) would visit my hometown and alternated work and pleasure (though few things bring more pleasure than working for kids). Interest decreased over the last few years, something that many quickly blamed on the municipal governments, because (in a typical necochense fashion, regrettably) they didn’t seem to care too much about tourism and offering good services to those visiting our beaches. That’s how the festival began to languish, less artists were interested in coming, and less floats would be taking part of the parade. But there was no way to predict the shameful events that would shock necochenses around the world would feel a couple of weeks ago.

This year’s edition was marred by the use and abuse of political propaganda during the inaugural parade (something that, as the local newspaper “Ecos Diarios” points out, is a special skill the current government has; they can turn anything into a political event).

Right from the beginning, many artists and other workers began to complain about the horrific conditions in which they had to work… and live. Some were placed in a hotel that had been closed years before over safety and health issues. They didn’t have water (or fire extinguishers, for example). Shows and events were virtually not promoted, which caused most of them to be very poorly attended. That wasn’t all. The venues had many sound and hydro problems, to the point that actors had to yell for people to hear them.

The artists made a mistake they would regret: they had dignity. They complained to the Municipality through the Secretary of Tourism. The Necochean government took over about a month ago, and is aligned with the party in power at a national level. Their response was also very true to the style of the governing party: violence and intolerance.

A group of goons suspected to have links to the Secretary of Tourism showed up at a restaurant where one of these groups of actors that had complained were eating and beat the living daylight out of them, in front of everybody, with the impunity of those who know they’re ‘protected'. None of the important or respectable local media even mentioned this news, something very suspicious. Just a couple of little online tabloids, that was it.

This group of actors and crew went to the police and pressed charges; then they immediately left a city that had given them such a bad welcome and never cared to protect them. The attacks and threats continued, so the rest of the artists left soon after and the festival came to a screeching halt. It was a huge scandal and a very sad day for my hometown, which many try to ignore, either because it’s convenient or because they’re afraid. With charges pressed and everything, there are still no news about any possible consequences for Secretary Trobo or her acolytes, because in Argentina, like the wannabe mafia cheef in charge of the Argentine Soccer Association likes to say, “everything passes”.

What won’t pass so easily is the damage this people have done to the most important event of my hometown. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 2013 Edition of the Festival ends being cancelled due to the lack of interest.

Because… who would go to a place knowing that not only they will live in inhuman conditions, but also will be forced to performed on unacceptable venues with virtually no public? And even more, knowing that if they dare to pretend to have decent living and working conditions, they might end in a hospital?

I keep on saying that even after so many years and in spite of the fact that I’m so far away, Argentina hurts. But Necochea hurts even more these days.

Con más de 50 ediciones a cuestas, el Festival Infantil de Necochea, mi ciudad natal, es ya mucho más que una tradición; es una de esos eventos que definen a una ciudad, como lo es el Carnaval en Gualeguachú o el Oktoberfest en Villa General Belgrano. Tanto mis hermanos, como también mis primos y por supuesto yo mismo no sólo hemos disfrutado de los muchísimos espectáculos que se brindan durante esa semana (la segunda de Enero) sino que hasta también hemos sido parte de ellos, desfilando en las carrozas de la Liga de Madres de Familia, de la cual mi abuela Haydée era una muy activa participante.

Con los años, amigos míos que se dedican a la actuación (como mi querida María Marta) visitaron mi ciudad natal y alternaron el trabajo y el placer (aunque pocas cosas sean tan placenteras como trabajar para los niños). En los últimos años hubo un decrecimiento en el interés que genera este festival, por el que muchos se apresuraron a responsabilizar a los gobiernos municipales de turno, que (bien a la usanza necochense, lamentablemente) parecía darle muy poca importancia y relevancia a la cuestión turística. Así fue que el festival comenzó a languidecer, menos artistas se acercaron y menos carrozas desfilaron. Pero nada presagiaba la vergüenza y el escarnio que los necochenses de todo el mundo iríamos a pasar un par de semanas atrás.

La versión de este año estuvo manchada por el uso y abuso de la propaganda política en pleno desfile de carrozas (como bien dice el editorial del “Ecos Diarios”, es una habilidad especial que tiene el gobierno de turno esa de convertir cualquier cosa en un evento político).

Ni bien iniciada la Edición 2012, muchos artistas y talleristas comenzaron a quejarse de las horrendas condiciones de trabajo, y de vida. Algunos fueron alojados en un hotel que hacía tiempo que había sido clausurado y en el que no tenían agua (ni matafuegos, por ejemplo). La promoción de los espectáculos fue nula, lo que causó que la mayoría de las funciones se hicieran a sala prácticamente vacía. No terminó todo allí. Las salas contaban con innumerables problemas de sonido y energía, al punto que más de una obra se tuvo que hacerse a los gritos pelados.

Los artistas cometieron un pecado imperdonable: tuvieron dignidad y se quejaron a la Municipalidad a través de la Secretaría de Turismo. El gobierno necochense asumió hace sólo un mes y es afín al gobierno nacional. La respuesta municipal fue bien al estilo del partido gobernante: violencia e intolerancia.

Un grupo de matones que se supone responden a la Secretaria de Turismo irrumpió en un restaurante donde se encontraba cenando una de las compañías que se había quejado por las malas condiciones y los molieron a patadas delante de todos, con la impunidad de aquél que se sabe protegido. Ninguno de los medios importantes de la ciudad se hizo 'eco' del asunto, algo muy sospechoso.

Esta compañía de artistas radicó la pertinente denuncia y se fue inmediatamente de la ciudad que tan mal los acogió y nunca los protegió. Los ataques siguieron, así que muy pronto se fue todo el resto yel festival quedó trunco. Una verdadera vergüenza que muchos callan, por conveniencia o por miedo. Con denuncias de por medio y todo, aún no se habla de que vayan a haber consecuencias para la Secretaria Trobo o sus secuaces, porque en Argentina, como bien dice el pichón de mafioso que está a cargo de la Asociación de Fútbol Argentino, "todo pasa".

Lo que no va a pasar así nomás el es daño que esta gentuza le ha hecho al evento más importante de mi ciudad natal. No me extrañaría para nada que el del año que viene se termine cancelando por la falta de interés.

Porque... quién iría a un lugar donde sabe que no sólo va a vivir en condiciones paupérrimas, sino que también va a actuar en escenarios no aptos y sin público? Y además sabiendo que si tiene el tupé de pretender vivir en condiciones dignas, es posible que termine en el hospital?

Siempre digo que, aún después de tanto tiempo y a la distancia, Argentina me duele. Por estos días, Necochea me duele mucho más.

It finally happened

Exactly a year ago, my blog was at its peak in terms of popularity. I had averages of 140/150 visits per day and many friends and blog buddies would come to leave their comments very often -or just to heckle me! :-)

Then my blog was hacked, and it was very hard to come back. In fact, the main reason I did return and continued blogging was the overwhelming support I received from the same friends and blog buddies who had been reading my blog until then (plus, of course, those who have been with me always, regardless of whether they ‘read me’ or not). I did come back, but my blog would never be the same. My mood was a big factor here too. I struggled a lot to keep it floating and I even managed to get near to an average of 100 visits per day during the summer. But after that, it was another free fall.

I love stats, and my numbers right now are horrific. I guess it’s a combination of me not writing at the crazy pace I used to, a decrease in the quality of what I write, and the fact that I’m not as active as I used to be. I’m not complaining about the results, it’s something you can expect.

But when I resumed my blogging last week, I had a goal: I want to bring LfW back to life. I know it’s going to cost me dearly, but I also know that I can do it. One of the short term goals I self imposed were to make it to 100 visitors for one day. I had to be patient… but it finally happened!

The next short term goal is ‘write something that actually has some value’, of course. We’ll see how I do with that… :-)

Hace sólo un año, mi blog estaba en la cúspide de su popularidad. Tenía promedios de 140/150 visitas por día y muchos amigos y blog buddies pasaban por aquí para dejar sus comentarios muy seguido –o al menos para verduguearme! :-)

Luego mi blog fue hackeado, y fue muy difícil poder volver. De hecho, la razón principal por la que continué blogueando fue el impresionante apoyo que recibí de esos mismos amigos y blogbuddies que habían estado leyendo este blog hasta tencons (más, por supuesto, esos que han estado conmigo siempre, me ‘lean’ o no). Si bien terminé volviendo, mi blog nunca volvió a ser el mismo. Mis ganas (o falta de) fueron un factor importante. Me costó un perú mantenerlo a flote, y apenas si llegué a rascar un promedio muy cercano a las 100 visitas diarias durante el verano. Pero luego de esos meses, me vine en picada.

Amo las estadísticas, y mis números hoy en día son horribles. Es una combinación de haber bajado ese ritmo insano que tenía para escribir, un decrecimiento en la calidad de lo que escribo y el hecho de que no estoy ni por asomo tan activo en la blogosfera como supe estarlo. No me quejo de los resultados, porque me parecen esperables.

Pero cuando volví a bloguear la semana pasada, me fijé una meta: revivir al pobre LfW. Sé que me va a costar mucho, pero también sé que puedo hacerlo. Una de las metas de corto plazo que me impuse era la de volver a tener 100 visitas en un día. Tuve que tener paciencia… pero finalmente ocurrió!

La próxima meta es por supuesto ‘escribir algo que tenga algún valor’. Pero bueno, para eso falta, che! :-)

This soup tastes very, very bad - #StopSOPA

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is a project currently being treated at the US Congress. It basically means creating a censorship procedure on the internet that is very similar to those used in countries like China and Iran, and that will allow the Government to prevent people from accessing websites that they have determined are violating copyright laws by sharing music, movies, games, etc.

The US Congress has already announced that they will not proceed with the voting session on Jan/24th due in part to the backlash of negative reactions from sites like Google, Reddit and Wikipedia, which has even shut down its site for today.

As the article (in Spanish) I read at ‘La Mascarada’ says, sites like Twitter, Facebook, etc would be forced to establish self-censorship mechanisms to avoid being banned by the government. This meaning, irresponsible actions from users will eventually affect the service provider instead of those who actually broke the law, something I find unacceptable.

There are many opinions about this, and it’s of course a worldwide trend on Twitter (though there is people making all kind of incredible claims). I agree with the idea that sharing movies and music over the internet should be at least regulated (and if not, penalized), but I think this project is just a badly camouflaged version of good ole censorship that makes the US Government look pretty bad, as they took a censoring role that has many similarities to those played by enemies like Venezuela, Siria, Iran and others.

SOPA (iniciales de Stop Onlince Piracy Act) es un proyecto de Ley que se está debatiendo en estos días en el Congreso de los Estados Unidos. Básicamente establece el uso de un método de censura sobre internet muy similar al que es usado en países como China e Irán, y que permite al gobierno impedir el acceso a websites que el gobierno determine están violando la ley de propiedad intelectual, ya sea compartiendo música, películas, juegos, etc.

El Congreso de EE UU ya ha anunció que no van a llevar la cabo la votación originalmente establecida para el 24 de Enero debido en gran parte a la reacción de importantes sites como Google, Reddit y Wikipedia, que ha hecho un ‘apagón’ virtual en protesta.

Como bien dice el artículo original citado por el website ‘La Mascarada’, muchos sites como Twitter, Facebook, etc se verían forzados a establecer mecanismos de autocensura para evitar ser bloqueados. Es decir, las acciones irresponsables de los usuarios terminarán afectando al proveedor de servicios en lugar de al que comete el delito, algo que a mí me parece totalmente inaceptable.

Hay muchas opiniones sobre el tema y es, por supuesto, un TT en Twitter (aunque hay gente alarmista que dice cualquier barbaridad). A mí, más allá de que estoy de acuerdo con el hecho de que compartir películas y música original por internet debería ser al menos regulado (y si no, penado), me parece que este proyecto es una locura y que hace quedar muy mal parado al gobierno de los Estados Unidos, porque lo pone en un rol censor al mejor estilo de sus países enemigos como Venezuela, Siria, Irán y tantos otros.

I was having dinner –alone– at an Applebee’s near Greenville, South Carolina. A few minutes after I walked in, a young couple sat right behind me. They had a very active little boy, who introduced himself to me by making cat noises as loud as I could, this close to my left ear. I was tempted to bark in return, but I didn’t, thinking that I might scare him.

The kid continued to be as loud as he could, and bossed his parents around the whole time. Still, and for a strange reason, he wasn’t as annoying as you would expect. Kudos to his parents too, because they never lost their cool and would even say things like “I love you” and “You’re such a gorgeous kid!”.

But I could soon tell they were starting to get concerned about me. I mean, the restaurant was almost empty and they had just chosen the table behind mine… When the kid started to yell again, the mother tried reasoning with him:

- Carson! Please stop yelling like that! It’s not a nice thing to do…

The kid’s answer was hilarious:

- Don’t worry, Mom, the noise doesn’t scare me.

I was still smiling by the time I was getting in the car (not before he waved goodbye to me).

Estaba cenando –solo– en un Applebee’s cerca de Greenville, South Carolina. Unos minutos después de que yo llegara, una pareja joven se sentó justo detrás de mí. Tenían un chiquito muy activo, que se presentó maullando como un gato lo más fuerte posible, así de cerquita de mi oído izquierdo. Estuve tentado de contestarle con un ladrido, pero no lo hice, temiendo asustarlo mucho.

El angelito de Dios continuó su show, gritando y mandoneando a sus padres todo el tiempo. A pesar de ello, y por el motivo que fuera, no me resultaba tan insoportable como debiera, hasta lo encontraba gracioso a veces. Mis respetos para sus padres también, porque nunca perdieron el control y hasta le contestaban cosas como “Te quiero” y “Qué lindo nenito que sos!”.

Pero pronto pude ver que se estaban preocupando por mí. Es que el restaurante estaba casi vació y ellos justo se habían sentado en la mesa detrás de la mía. Cuando el tesorito comenzó a vociferar de nuevo, la mamá trató de razonar con él:

- Carson! Por favor no grites más así! No es algo lindo lo que estás haciendo…

La respuesta del nene fue muy graciosa:

- No te preocupes, Ma. Los ruidos no me asustan.

Todavía me reía cuando me súbí al auto para irme (no antes de que el chiquito me saludara al pasar).

My nieces are still recovering from that sight, when their father proceeds to open his shirt and reveal that he’s one of them too!

Domingo a la tarde, mi hermano está en el mall con su familia. De la nada, se aparecen dos pibes caminando. Uno está vestido como Batman, mientras que el otro es el Hombre Araña.

Mis nietas intentan recuperarse de semejante vista, pero nada las prepara para lo que sigue: mi hermano abre su camisa y les revela que él también es parte de los Super Amigos!

Y bueno… un día normal para cualquiera de apellido Almada.

Frequent flyer rules – #05

I haven’t written any posts for this series in a while, but I really enjoy it. I travelled a lot (two whole days) this week, so I had time to remember and put a couple more ‘rules’ on paper. Here they are!

Finding your seat

This plane is mine, mine, mine

I love these people who rush to get on the plane as soon as possible and put their carefully folded jacket in the overhead compartment (sometimes not even on top but next to their bags), only to have to get up and retrieve such jacket a few minutes later, because other people will obviously need the space for their own belongings.

Most of the times, this individual will have a window seat, which means that whoever is sitting next to him (one or two persons, depending on the size of the plane) will have to unbuckle, get up, wait, and then sit down and fasten the seat belt again.

They’re lovely people. Really.

On your way there

Morons in a perpetual state of connectedness

The plane is about to take off, so we receive the customary message: “At this point, we request that you turn off all electronic equipment, including cellphones, iPods, etc. Once we reach an altitude of 10,000 feet you will be able to use them upon our notification”

Every single time, there will be one or two idiots within your sight (and this is a plane, so we’re talking about four or five other passengers you can see) who will refuse to turn those damn things off, covering them instead. Even more, if they’re playing with their iPads (what other thing would you do with an iPad, work?) they will hide them as the flight attendant walks by, only to resume their activity once they’re out of sight.

It’s OK, we don’t want the safety of 100+ passengers interfere with your Angry Birds, dude…

Arriving on destination

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride

You made it safely. You get out of the plane (not before you let a few very anxious people sitting behind you go first) and you walk to the luggage pickup area. You wait, and wait, and wait… about 20 minutes later, you hear the buzz and the luggage starts to come.

Your suitcase will never be first. Never. If anything, that bag will be the property of either:

1. That very annoying guy who was sitting just across the aisle

2. The person standing right next to you while you wait (there’s a good
chance we’re talking about the same person in both cases here)

Buscando tu asiento

El avión es mío, mío, mío

Adoro esa gente que se apura a meterse en el avión lo antes posible y pone su muy prolijamente doblado abrigo en el compartimiento para equipaje (a veces ni siquiera encima de sus cosas sino que al costado), sólo para tener que levantarse y recogerlo unos pocos minutos después, porque hay otra gente llegando a sentarse y necesita ese lugar para poner sus bolsos.

La mayoría de las veces, este individuo va a tener un asiento de ventanilla, lo que significa que quien se siente a su lado (una o dos personas, dependiendo del tamaño del avión) va a tener que sacarse el cinturón, levantarse, esperar y luego volver a sentarse y atarse.

Son gente adorable, en serio.

En camino

Imbéciles en un estado de conectividad perpetua

El avión está a punto de despegar, así que recibimos el mensaje de siempre: “Requerimos por favor que apaguen sus equipos electrónicos, incluyendo celulares, iPods, etc. Una vez que lleguemos a una altitud de 10,000 pies los notificaremos para que puedan volver a utilzarlos”.

En cada oportunidad, va a haber uno o dos idiotas dentro de tu campo visual (y eso es mucho hablando de un avión, porque uno puede ver a cuatro o cinco nada más) que se van a rehusar a apagar esos malditos adminículos, y los van a tapar por un ratito. Si están jugando con sus iPads, por ejemplo (bueno, y qué más podría hacer uno con un iPad, trabajar??), los van a esconder cuando pase la azafata, y luego van a seguir jugando una vez que no hayan más moros en la costa.

Está bien, no quisiéramos que la seguridad de más de 100 pasajeros interfiera con tu partido de Angry Birds, man…

Llegando a destino

Cebollitas subcampeón

Llegamos lo más bien. Salimos del avión (no sin antes dejar pasar a un par de tipos muy apurados que se sentaban detrás de nosotros) y caminamos (y caminamos…) hasta llegar a donde se recuperan las valijas. Esperamos, y esperamos… unos 20 minutos después, escuchamos la chicharra y comienzan a salir los equipajes por la oscura boca de una rampa que viene de las entrañas mismas del aeropuerto.

Tu equipaje nunca va a ser el primero en salir. Nunca. Es más, las chances son de que esa primera valija sea de:

1. Ese tipo tan insoportable que se sentaba justo al lado tuyo

2. La persona que está parada junto a vos mientras esperás (hay
muchas posibilidades de que estemos hablando de la misma persona)

Many make New Year’s Resolutions, as if the mere turning of a year could work wonders for their behaviour and commitment. Me being the pragmatic guy I am, I have long ago abandon such a stupid idea. For example, I am (always) trying to lose weight, but I didn’t set any goals for 2012 at 12:01 AM last Sunday. Instead, I came up with a short list of advantages of being big, since I anticipated that I wouldn’t be that successful with my weight thing.

Here’s number one…

When travelling to unwelcoming countries, it’s safer

for my company to send me instead of others.

Big people are way harder to kidnap.

Muchos hacen resoluciones de Año Nuevo, como si el mero pasaje de un año a otro pudiera obrar milagros en sus conductas y compromiso. Yo, siendo el tipo pragmático que soy, he abandonado esa estúpida idea ya hace mucho. Por ejemplo, estoy (siempre) tratando de bajar de peso, pero no me puse ninguna meta para el 2012 a las 12:01 AM del domingo pasado. En su lugar, decidí armarme una mini-lista de ventajas de estar excedido de peso, ya que anticipaba que no me iba a ir muy bien con este asunto de adelgazar.

I woke up late today, at around 7:45 AM. I only had five minutes to get dressed, wash my face, brush my teeth and hit the road to take Santi and Caro to school. As I was leaving, Florencia told me that her my birthday gift was just by my bed, so I could pick it up later. When I got back home, I found this on top of my CPAP device…

Hoy me levanté tarde, a eso de las 7:45 AM. Sólo tuve cinco minutos para vestirme, lavarme la cara, los dientes y salir como tejo para la calle a llevar a Santi y a Caro a la escuela. Cuando me iba, Florencia me dijo que mi regalo de cumpleaños estaba al lado de mi cama, así lo agarraba más tarde. Cuando volví, me encontré con esto encima de mi máquina CPAP…

It was a very beautiful and carefully closed envelope, with three tiny figurines on top. I couldn’t make out what they were exactly, so tiny they are, but they looked to me like a small boat and two people (maybe Flor and I?)

Era un sobrecito hermoso y muy cuidadosamente cerrado, con tres muñequitos encima. No pude determinar exactamente qué eran, de tan chiquitos, pero parecían un barquito y dos personitas (tal vez Flor y yo?)

I flipped the enveloped. On the other side, there was a purple unicorn (probably representing me, due to the color) and a smaller green one (which I figured it would be her). You could also see the words of the song sung by the little girl in the ‘Despicable me’ movie: “Unicorns I love them, unicorns I love them”.

I opened the envelope and I found a note.

Di vuelta el sobrecito. Del otro lado había un unicornio violeta (seguramente me representaba a mí por el color) y otro más chiquito de color verde (que calculé sería ella). También estaba la canción que cantaba la nenita de la película ‘Despicable me’: “Amo los unicornios, amo los unicornios”.

Abrí el sobre y me encontré con una cartita.

The note was very carefully written and folded. The message, very simple yet beautiful. “Dear Dad, Happy Birthday! I hope you have the best one yet! Love, your dear daughter, Florencia”.

It is the best one yet, Flor, it is. :-)

La cartita tenía escritura muy cuidadosa y muy delicadamente doblada. El mensaje era simple pero hermoso: “Querido Papi, Feliz Cumpleaños! Espero que sea el mejor hasta ahora! Con amor, tu hija querida, Florencia”.

Fue el mejor hasta hora, Flor, sin dudas. :-)

People like us

I’m back to work today, after a 3-week hiatus. I pretty much had to take time off, because I had too many vacation days left; hadn’t I booked some days, I would have lost them! I don’t remember being off work for such a long period of time in the last couple of decades (I’ve been on holidays since Dec/21st), but boy have I enjoyed it!

We had a beautiful Christmas Eve, as I mentioned before, along with our adopted family here in Canada: our friend Laura, her daughters Tathyana and Sileny (who we like to call our ‘nieces’), Sileny’s boyfriend (Daniel) and his two girls. It was a laid back, very special evening, filled with music, as usual.

New Year’s Eve found us somewhere else, at our friend’s place and along with a big group of people, but with something very different: Santi was not there. For the very first time, our small family was dismembered for the holidays. It was a very difficult (and painful) decision for Gaby, as she would want to have all of her ‘babies’ home for Christmas and New Year. But our babies are not babies anymore… Santi had been invited over some friends and really wanted to go. The place was out of town (quite far away, actually), so I drove him there and dropped him off at around 9:30 PM, not before I talked to his friend’s parents and made sure that not only they were going to be there all the time but also that they were going to make sure everything stayed under control.

I drove back to our friend’s place, we celebrated the arrival of 2012 (but mostly the fact that a very sad 2011 for my family had ended) and I went to pick up Santi again at around 3:00 AM. He left the house grimacing in pain, because he had just fallen down the stairs (I know…). Since I couldn’t tell whether he had had a good time or not, I had to ask. His answer left me speechless:

- Yes, I had a good time, but… you know what? I should have stayed with you guys.

- Why?

- Because I would have had an even better time.

I found that comment, so simple in theory, very sincere and showing a lot of appreciation for his family. I considered making some kind of joke about it, but there was more…

- My friend’s parents were really cool, they’re people like you guys.

- What do you mean with that? Why ‘people like us’?

- Well… they’re like you and Mom, kind, funny and who take good care of their kids and make sure that their guests have everything they need.

In a matter of minutes, Santi had shocked me with a couple of statements that had left me with no words. I immediately started to think about the fact that this kid’s parents were ‘people like us’. What did being ‘people like us’ mean?

Being ‘people like us’ means to work hard and work together to raise the beautiful family that we have. It’s to be honest and straightforward, allowing us not only to teach our kids those values but also to predicate by example. Being like us is to have just one face, to say things face to face and have the cojones to get rid of hypocrite, hurtful people who do nothing but to create conflict wherever they go, whether they are acquaintances, friends or relatives. Being like us is being thankful to those who lent us a hand when we needed it most, but also being able to tolerate (forgiving, but never forgetting) those ingrates who we met in our life (and there were many).

Being ‘people like us’ means dedicating our lives to our kids, making sure that they have everything they need (not only in terms of material stuff but most importantly in terms of things that can’t be measured). It’s knowing that our kids count on us and they can talk to us and ask for advice, even when I’m not home. It’s knowing that they feel contained and protected, that they live in a house where they’re loved and they’re told they’re loved all the time. I make sure that my kids have all those things I didn’t have growing up, for different reasons. With any luck, they will not feel that they had to raise themselves like it happened to me…

We’re ‘people like us’ when Gaby comes back from work, beyond tired, and spends a couple of hours in the kitchen because one of the kids invited ten friends over for dinner; or when I go to another town to watch Santi play soccer and then I drive for five hours in the middle of a summer storm to make it to another city where Carolina is playing, arriving just as the game is finishing but happy because my daughter sees me as she’s coming off the field. It’s going out with Juan at 4:00 AM to have a burger just because we want to (and we can). It’s calling Florencia and asking her to sleep with us tonight, with the excuse that we’re cold and we need her to keep us warm because we’re old.

Being ‘people like us’ means to be able to trust my kids and put my hands on fire for my wife. It’s to be able to leave town knowing that they will be OK because they will care for one another. It’s not needing for them to call me every night to know that they love me and they miss me (Gaby calls me all the time anyway) :-)

I love being ‘people like us’. I live much better and there is no conflict or tension in my life anymore. Like a good gardener, I was able to get rid of the weed and the bad seeds and kept the best. In the last few months, we had the pleasure of having a good part of my family visiting us (all definitely ‘people like us’) and Gaby and the kids went to Argentina and had a great time with her brothers, our nieces and nephews, my mother-in-law… all of them definitely in the same category.

We spent the Holidays with many of our friends, going out or having people home almost every day. In every case, they were what we would call ‘people like us’. We had a great time during these two weeks we have off (the kids are going back to school today). We sang, we got together, we slept a lot and more importantly, we had a lot of fun together.

It’s not a coincidence that these have been one of the best Christmas of my life. We were surrounded by ‘people like us’ who make our lives richer and happier.

It’s my 45th birthday today. I have no doubts I have lived more than half of my life already. Has it been all good so far? No, not always, but it couldn’t be better right now. Would I change anything, should I be given the chance? No, because I have learned from every mistake and from every disgrace. What do I expect of the years I still have ahead of me? Simple: to be able to keep living in peace, surrounded by the affection and love of those who care about me; away from misery, envy, hypocrisy and maintaining the same behaviour we have kept until now, so we can still put our heads in our pillows every night and sleep with the advantage of having a clean conscience. It seems easy, but it’s very hard to achieve this.

But how we enjoy it!

Singing together on Christmas Eve – Cantando juntos en Nochebuena

Hoy vuelvo al trabajo, luego de un paréntesis de 3 semanas. Me tuve que tomar las vacaciones, porque me quedaban demasiados días y si no los usaba los iba a perder. No recuerdo haber estado tanto tiempo sin trabajar en décadas (desde el 21 de Diciembre hasta hoy), pero vaya si lo disfruté!

Pasamos una Nochebuena hermosa, como conté, en compañía de nuestra familia adoptiva en Canadá: nuestra amiga Laura, sus hijas Tathyana y Sileny (a quienes nos gusta tratar de ‘sobrinas’), el novio de Sileny (Daniel) y las dos chiquitas de él. Fue una velada tranquila, muy especial, y como siempre, cargada de música.

La noche de Fin de Año o Nochevieja nos encontró en casa de una amiga, junto con un grupo grande de gente, pero con una novedad muy importante: Santi no estaba allí. Por primera vez, nuestro pequeño núcleo familiar se desmembraba para las fiestas. Fue una decisión dificilísima para Gaby (y dolorosa también), ya que ella quisiera siempre tener a ‘los bebés’ en casa. Pero resulta que los bebés ya no son tan bebés… A Santi lo habían invitado a casa de un amigo y realmente tenía muchas ganas de ir. La casa era fuera (y lejos) de la ciudad, así que lo llevé en auto y lo dejé a eso de las 9:30 PM no sin antes hablar con los padres y asegurarme de que no sólo iban a estar allí todo el tiempo sino que también se iban a ocupar de mantener todo dentro de los carriles correspondientes.

Volví a casa de nuestra amiga, festejamos la llegada del 2012 como correspondía (pero más que nada que hubiera terminado un 2011 que en lo familiar fue muy triste) y a eso de las 3:00 AM me lo fui a buscar a Santi de nuevo. Salío con gestos de dolor, porque se acababa de caer por la escalera (en fin). Como su cara no me permitía adivinar como la había pasado, le tuve que preguntar. Su respuesta me dejó de una pieza:

- La pasé muy bien, pero… sabés qué? Me debería haber quedado con ustedes.

- Por qué?

- Porque la hubiese pasado aún mejor.

Ese comentario, de por sí tan simple, me pareció una gran muestra de sinceridad y aprecio por su familia por parte de mi hijo. Pensé en hacer alguna broma al respecto, pero había más…

- Los padres de mi amigo son buenísimos, son gente como ustedes.

- Qué querés decir con eso? Gente como nosotros por qué?

- Y… son como Mamá y vos, que son atentos, divertidos y se ocupan muy bien de sus hijos y de que no les falte nada a los invitados.

En el transcurso de dos minutos Santi me había golpeado con un par de frases que me habían dejado casi a punto caramelo. Enseguida me puse a pensar sobre eso de que los padres del chico eran ‘gente como nosotros’. Qué significaba ser ‘gente como nosotros’?

Ser ‘gente como nosotros’ es trabajar duro y tirar juntos para mantener la hermosa familia que tenemos. Es ser gente honesta y derecha, que no sólo les enseña esos valores a sus hijos sino que también pueden predicar con el ejemplo. Ser como nosotros es tener una sola cara, decir las cosas de frente y tener los huevos para sacarnos de encima de nuestras vidas a la gente hipócrita, dañina y que no hace sino generar conflictos, ya sean conocidos, amigos o familiares. Ser como nosotros es ser agradecidos a aquellos que nos tendieron una mano cuando la necesitamos, así como también lo es tolerar (pero nunca olvidar) a los ingratos, que los hay y muchos.

Ser ‘gente como nosotros’ es dedicarse por completo a los hijos, asegurarse de que tengan todo lo que necesitan, no sólo en el plano material sino que por sobre todo en aquellas cosas que no se pueden medir. Es saber que nuestros hijos cuentan con nosotros y pueden venir a hablarnos, aunque yo no esté en casa. Es saber que se sienten contenidos y protegidos, que viven en una casa donde son queridos y se les dice que se los quiere todo el tiempo. Me ocupo muy bien de que mis hijos tengan todas esas cosas que a mí me faltaron, por distintos motivos. Con suerte, ellos no van a sentir que se criaron solos como me pasó a mí.

Ser ‘gente como nosotros’ es que Gaby llegue reventada del trabajo y se ponga a cocinar porque uno de los chicos invitó a diez amigos a cenar; también lo es que yo me vaya a otra ciudad a ver un partido de fútbol de Santi y luego viaje cinco horas bajo un temporal para ir a otra ciudad donde juega Carolina, llegar justo cuando terminó el partido pero sentirme satisfecho porque mi hija me vio allí cuando salía de la cancha. Es salir a las 4:00 AM a comer una hamburguesa con Juan sólo porque podemos. Es llamarla a Flor a que venga a dormir con nosotros con la excusa de que tenemos frío y necesitamos que nos mantenga calentitos porque somos viejos.

Ser ‘gente como nosotros’ es poder confiar en mis hijos y poner las manos en el fuego por mi esposa. Es poder irme tranquilo sabiendo que ellos van a estar bien porque se van a cuidar uno al otro. Es no necesitar que me llamen todas las noches para saber que me quieren y me extrañan, porque yo lo sé (igual Gaby me llama siempre, pero yo soy un desastre).

Me encanta ser ‘gente como nosotros’. Vivo muchísimo más tranquilo y en mi vida ya no hay conflicto. Como buen jardinero, saqué los yuyos y las malezas y me quedé con lo mejor. En los últimos meses tuvimos la oportunidad de recibir a una buena parte de mi familia que es definitivamente ‘gente como nosotros’, y Gaby y los chicos estuvieron en Argentina junto con ellos y la familia de Gaby, que también entra en esa categoría.

Pasamos las últimas fiestas con muchos de nuestros amigos, saliendo a comer o recibiendo gente en casa casi todos los días. En todos los casos, son ‘gente como nosotros’. La pasamos genial en estas dos semanas de break que tuvimos todos (los chicos vuelven a la escuela hoy). Cantamos, nos reunimos, dormimos a pata suelta, y sobre todo, nos divertimos mucho.

No es casualidad que éstas hayan sido de las mejores Fiestas que haya pasado en mi vida. Nos rodeamos de ‘gente como nosotros’, que no hace más que enriquecernos y alegrarnos la vida.

Hoy cumplo 45 años. Sin dudas ya he pasado la mitad de mi vida. He tenido una buena vida hasta ahora? Tal vez no siempre, pero no podría ser mejor ahora. Cambiaría algo si pudiera? No, porque he aprendido de todos mis errores y de todas mis desgracias. Y que espero de los años que me quedan? Simple: poder seguir viviendo en paz, rodeado del cariño y el amor de aquellos que me aprecian y me quieren bien; alejado de las miserias, la envidia y las hipocresías y manteniendo la misma conducta que hemos mantenido hasta ahora, así podemos seguir apoyando la cabeza en la almohada todas las noches, durmiendo con la conciencia en paz. Parece fácil, pero es bien difícil lograrlo.

Eso sí, cómo se disfruta!

After three weeks (OK, ten months) in which I have barely written anything interesting, I’m ready to come back online on Monday, which also happens to be my last vacation day (and my birthday!).

I will try to make #felizcumplegabriel (#happybirthdaygabriel) a TT on Twitter. At least on my neighbourhood… :-)

Luego de tres semanas (OK, diez meses) en los que apenas si escribí algo interesante, estoy listo para volver al ruedo el lunes, que también es el último día de mis vacaciones (y mi cumpleaños!).

We had Christmas Eve dinner at home, along with our ‘adoptive family’, our friend Laura and her daughters Sileny and Tathyana. Sileny was with her boyfriend Daniel and two girls who couldn’t be prettier: Leah(7) and Shiloh (4). Leah is a beautiful –and smart!– girl, while her little sister adds to those conditions a delicious mischievous look.

Trying to break the ice and win them over (I’m a big guy, so I can be scary…), I began to talk to them, and I soon realized how beautiful were the little one’s eyes. So I paid her the compliment:

- Shiloh! Your eyes are so pretty, what a beautiful colour! Can I see?

The little one got closer and allowed me to see her eyes… opening them wide using her fingers!!! It was very hard to hold the laughter having this little princes 3 inches away from my face, with her two eyes as big as a pizza! :-)

Tuvimos la cena de Nochebuena con nuestra ‘familia adoptiva’ en Canadá, nuestra amiga Laura y sus hijas Sileny y Tathyana. Sileny también vino con su pareja, Daniel y dos niñitas una más hermosa que la otra: Leah (7) y Shiloh (4). Leah es una hermosa –y muy inteligente– niña, mientras que su hermanita agrega a esas cualidades una cara de picarona deliciosa.

Tratando de romper el hielo para caerles simpático (soy un tipo grandote y a veces asusto…), me puse a conversar con ellas y pronto reparé en los hermosos ojos de la más chiquita. Entonces le hice el comentario:

- Shiloh! Qué bonitos que son tus ojos, qué lindo color! A ver?

La chiquitina se me acerco y me dejó verle los ojos… abriéndoselos de par en par con sus manitos!!! Fue muy difícil contener la risotada teniendo a esta belleza a 10 centímetros de mi cara con sus ojos grandes como el 2 de oros! :-)

It was about 8:30 PM and it was cold and rainy. I had just come back from one of my last trips and was home just for the day. Florencia was at a birthday party and since Gaby was busy, I offered to pick her up.

We were coming back from the party when Florencia suddenly asked me:

- Daddy, can you roll down the windows?

I got worried. Was she feeling carsick? I was driving my brand new company car, so I appreciated her thoughtfulness, but… it was cold. And raining.

We got really, really soaked for a minute. After that, I asked her:

- Flor, are you OK? Do you feel better now?

The answer, a typical Florencia:

- Oh, yes, I feel fine. It’s just that we were passing by the bread factory and I love the smell of bread just being made…

08/Dic/2011 – Florencia (8)

Eran como las 8:30 PM, llovía y hacía frío. Yo acababa de volver de uno de mis últimos viajes y estaba en casa sólo por el día. Florencia estaba en un cumpleaños y como Gaby estaba ocupada, yo me ofrecí a pasarla a buscar.

Veníamos volviendo de la fiesta cuando Florencia me preguntó de pronto:

- Papi, podés bajar las ventanillas?

Me preocupé. Se estará mareando? Estaba manejando mi flamante auto de la empresa, así que aprecié su consideración, pero… hacía frío. Y llovía.

Nos recontra empapamos por un buen minuto, luego del cual le pregunté:

- Flor, estás bien? Te sentís mejor ahora?

La respuesta, una típica ‘Florenciada’:

- Ah, sí, estoy lo más bien. Es que justo pasábamos por la fábrica de pan y me encanta el olorcito de cuando lo están cocinando…
