Hari ini Nyepi ... My second Silent day in Bali, I love it !

Karena hari ini tuh selain religius things, kalo dilihat di sisi lain .. Bali hari ini saving banyak listrik dan tidak ada polusi. Sampe sempet kepikiran gimana kalo tiap kota di Indonesia atau tiap pulau melakukan hal yang sama setiap tahunnya, pasti Indonesia bakalan saving banyak listrik.

Ada 2 prosesi sebelum Nyepi ...

1. Melasti
Prosesi ini biasanya diadakan di pantai atau danau, prosesi ini dilakukan untuk pembersihan pikiran.
Tahun lalu sempat ke Kuta dan ambil photo-photonya. Tapi tahun ini karena sibuk dengan hal lain jadinya tidak sempat.

2. Ogoh-Ogoh
Prosesi ini diadakan dimalam hari sebelum Hari Raya Nyepi. Beberapa minggu sebelum Nyepi biasanya tiap banjar bergotong royong untuk membuat ogoh-ogoh. Ogoh-ogoh akan diarak dijalan kota dan akhirnya dibakar. Kemarin sore kita sempat tunggu dijalan Imam Bonjol untuk lihat ogoh-ogoh.

The bottom line is ... I am enjoying so much the Silent day in Bali ... saving electricity and no pollution !

Hmmm where to start ?

It has been one year since I moved to Bali ...

Some things about Bali that I love, but some also I do not really like.

5 THINGS THAT I LOVE !

1. Balinese Culture & People

Balinese culture and the people are the matched combinations. Bali island is one of thousand islands in Indonesia archipelago. Bali is the only island with mostly Hindu population in Indonesia.

It has been 1 year since I moved to Bali and I really like live here somehow ... I had moved from one island to another island since I was wee and I have been travelling around Indonesia from one city to another city or one island to another island but .. I could say that Bali is the only place I like to live in Indonesia at the moment :).

2. The Island for tourist attractions.

Bali Island has got different things to do and visits.

Everyone may only know about the beaches and the temples but actually so many things to do in Bali Island.

Surfing, beach, temple, rice fields, mountains, lakes, hot spring, waterfall, rafting, water park, cooking class, etc.

3. The Beach

Kuta beach is the famous beach for the tourist but actually so many beaches around where people can go and do activities. So many events held on the beach and alot of the free !!!!

4. Simple life

The simple life that I meant is I think only in Bali where you can sit infront of Circle K or Mini Mart while having snacks or some drinks with your friends. No matter you are foreigner or local, they will not bother you as long as you are not drunk :D

I have been travelling around Indonesia and its impossible to do the simple things without anyone give you strange looks haha ..

5. The Foods

Balinese foods ??? YEAH !!! I love Balinese foods ... from ayam betutu until babi guling ... Love the local foods ... but I say no to mie goreng or nasi goreng :D

~5 THINGS THAT I DO NOT LIKE ~

1. Traffic

Even the traffic is not as bad as Jakarta but ... you will understand why I dont like the traffic if you look at the video below.

2. Rubbish

Nah, talk about rubbish ... Bali is not clean place .. people here still throw rubbish not in the bins or the road still blocked by water in the rainy season.

3. Street dogs

This is the saddest part that caught me at the first place when I arrived in Bali.

So many street dogs ... because in this country there is no rules / welfare to the animal rights.

We have been caring to wild dogs around the house by giving them food and drink outside of the house, so it will help them to survive and not hungry.

But our land lord told us to stop giving them food and drink as he is worrying about potential rabies.

I will write more about stray dogs on the other blog as I am supporting animal rights.

4. Job opportunity

This part is the difficult part for myself to get ... I am not a fussy person about the job but I really need a professional work environment as in Bali.

So many small companies around and they are not following the government regulations such as there is no insurance / jamsostek for the employees or there is no work contract between employer and employee ..

I can say that Bali (may be) not the right place for someone who wants to build their carrier.

I am writing this part as per my experience during my work search here.

5. Public Transport

In Kuta area, Taxi is the only public transport .. there is no public buss around Kuta.

But actually there are motorbike taxis called OJEK also, but honestly .. there are sucks !!!!

No wonder if most of the people in Bali have to ride a motor bike for their own good and the easier way to be around the island ...

Well ... the above explanation is based on my experience since I moved to this island.

But still I love to live here somehow :) ...

I have started "Bali Bric-a-Brac" only for last 1 month.

I am a hyperactive person who feels bored anytime I do not have much to do.

I did market survey about Bali stuffs last July 2010 started from woman's clothes.

I am not crazy about fashion but I know how to dress up ...

It helps me to choose nice affordable clothes that only sells in Bali Island.

But when I did survey for woman's accessories ..... I could not do the same as woman's clothes.

I did brain storming ... and I decided to design and create woman's accessories by my self.

Apart from my professional work, I have decided to do "Bali Bric-a-Brac" little business on my spare times.

I have enjoyed when I saw someone buy and wear the accessories that I made.

You do not need to be a president, an actress / actor, a minister, a lawyer, a manager or someone famous to save the world !

Why am I saying this ? because you only need to be YOURSELF to save the world !

Start a small thing from your self and your house also your family to save the world ...

For example ....

I have been running a small business to get more income apart from my daily professional work.

This business is selling stuff from Bali to my home town, also online marketing under Bali Bric-a-Brac (Bali Online Shop) Facebook group, also woman's accessories that created by myself.

I was thinking about how to make the package nice and not costly, because I have to send the orders to the buyer by mail.

If I buy envelopes / boxes from the shop or order a special paper bag or plastic bag with the logo, it will be additional fee for the shipping cost that I have to spend with my own pocket.

I did brain storming earlier and I found the solution !

I decided to make all the packaging / hang tags / bags by RE-USING PAPER !!

The guidance as follows :

All the steps from start to finish won't take more than 30 minutes.

What do you need ??

1. Few used paper as needed

2. A scissors

3. Glue as needed (for the glue I made it from Tapioca powder by mixed it in the hot water)

Glue in the tin - Used paper - Scissors

Step 1 : Cut the paper in to the shape below

If you are going to make bigger envelope, you can glue few paper in to one big paper.

Make sure that you draw cross or a line on the used paper to make sure that you do not need that paper anymore. Also by doing that you implemented ISO procedure.

Step 2 : Glue together the folded edges and fold into an envelope shape ...

Step 3 : Let the glue dry and the envelope is ready to use ...

How to Reduce Plastic Bag Use

This morning I was on my motorbike to Sunset Road via Glogor Carik road and surprised with the rubbish messed up on the road because of the rain last night.

There are news on TV about flooding in Kuta area because of the heavy raining last night. I saw one of housing complexes flooded on their yard when I left home.

Why does it happen ??

Rubbish has blocked the drains on the road and when the rain comes, the water does not flow to the drains / river but out of the street.

Its the huge plastic bag I ever seen !!!!

Millions of plastic bags are currently sitting in landfills and garbage cans in Indonesia and all over the world. Not only does it take a plastic bag years to decompose, but bags that don't make it to the landfill get caught in drains, in the ocean or round animals' bodies. There are so many ways to reduce plastic bag use; here are some easy tips to get you started.

Instructions

Step 1
Buy a reusable fabric bag. Bags made from different kinds of fabrics, such as canvas or cotton, can be used repeatedly and are usually washable. Most grocery stores and retailers are happy to have customers use non-plastic bags.
Step 2
Ask for paper at the grocery when the check-out clerk asks you that age old question, "Paper or plastic?" Although it's best to use a fabric bag, paper is recyclable and most plastics are not. Plastics take much longer to decompose.
Step 3
Reuse plastic bags in creative ways. Search the Internet for helpful ideas. For example, plastic bags can be used to stuff a giant pet pillow, to line paint trays or the baseboards when painting a room, or they can be stored in the car for wet clothes and shoes. There's really very little need to get more bags because the opportunities to reuse the ones you have are endless.
Step 4
Encourage your local stores to charge for plastic bags. Some retailers have started requiring patrons to pay for a plastic bag just as they would pay for any other item in the store. Most people would rather carry their newly purchased belongings by hand than shell out 59 cents for a bag.
Step 5
Fill a bag until it's ready to burst. Place as many items as possible in one plastic bag and you'll find it easy to reduce waste. Check-out clerks are notorious for putting only a couple of items in each bag. Help them out by bagging items yourself. Even if you are unable to stop using plastic bags completely, the reduction is a significant step forward.
Step 6
Obtain biodegradable plastic bags. Pet stores, pet shelters, environmental protection agencies and chambers of commerce often provide biodegradable plastic for everyday use. Some bags decompose in around 15 days. Do a little research to find out if there are places in your city that provide this option.

Tips & Warnings
Be resourceful. Multi-color plastic bags can be woven to make beautiful and long-lasting bowls and bags.
If you to dispose of a plastic bag, make sure it lands in the garbage, Silly as it may sound, stray plastic bags are hazardous to animals, traffic and plant life.

We are using the green bags above that we bought from Carrefour couple months back and use them every time we go for groceries shopping.
Please note that this post NOT TO SHOW one the department store better than other because I am posting picture of me inside Matahari department store plastic bag and posting Carrefour green bag that we use regularly for shopping .
But this posting is only for the example of the reality life in Indonesia and I face it everyday.

Sacred Animal vs Rubbish in Bali

It has been almost 1 year since I decided to live in the island of god.

One thing that also I have seen in other cities in Indonesia is about RUBBISH !!!

It is so sad to know that Indonesian not really cares about RUBBISH.

The picture above taken in Pemogan street near the house. So pity to know that the sacred animal hangs around the rubbish area because the green areas not many anymore.

A lot of people come to bali every year and perhaps only think about holiday, nice beaches, good surf, cheap foods but they do not think about the environment. I am not talking only about western tourists but also local tourists.

Some example as follows :

1.) If you drive along Legian road in the morning, you will see alot of rubbish on the road after the tourists had party on the previous night.

My question : " Is it difficult to put the beer bottles in the bin or leave them on the bar instead of (drunk tourists) walk around with the bottle on their hands around Legian road.

2.) If you drive to Sanur and you pass the junction for Serangan Island, you will smell the very very bad smell along the road. First time I passed that road, I asked to my self if there is any fish market around.

But hell .. NO !!!! Alot of rubbish on the river and the wind blows the smell all over the area.

If people said that the Government does not care about Rubbish, I would say "It is not true."

Why ?

Because everyone have to set their own mind and teach their kids to start keep Bali Clean and Green. Start from the very beginning, from our self and our family.

Lets make Bali Clean and Green !!!! I hope its not only for Bali but for ALL over Indonesia and also for our Earth. Our country is located in the equator line and still have rain forests. Lets keep them so the next generation still able to see and enjoy it in the future.

Rafting in Bali

Rafting is one of things to do in Bali Island.

My bf (best friend) took me for Rafting on my 30 year old birthday last year. It was fun and I loved it so much.

I can say, it looked like The Lost World - Jurrasic Park Movie 1997 but without the dino (^_*)

Registration

You can do it in many places around Legian street / travel agents / hotels. It will cost for about 30 USD per person and minimum 2 persons.

It is including the equipments, transportation from the hotel to the rafting place and back to the hotel and lunch.

For one raft boat will be for 4 persons + 1 guide.

What to bring rafting ?
- Wear light clothes or bather
- Wear runners or strapped sandals if possible
- Bring a change of clothes and a small towel
- You may want to bring sunscreen and a hat

- Beware of clothes with non fast colours

Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Day attracts over 250 girls to Double Six beach, Bali.

Under the threat of rain in the early morning hours, the Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Day 2010 kicked off with Round 1 of the women's ISC championship Tour event at just after 8 am with a rising tide and glassy 3-foot waves at Double six beach, Seminyak. Overall wave conditions were quite good for the majority the morning, with the lineup constantly shifting from left to right creating an ongoing-challenge for the competitors, which resulted in a lot of audience participation and cheering from the beach with the fans attempting to call their favorite surfers into the best positions.

After 4 heats in round one followed by 2 heats that were essentially the Women’s semifinals, last year’s Coca-Cola ISC Women’s Champion Bonne Gea along with Febri Rohaye Ningsih, Jasmine Haskel and Yuli Ifrika earned themselves a spot in the final.

Eventual winner Febri Rohaye Ningsih said; "it was great to surf in the final with strong surfers like Bonne, Jasmine and Yuli, those girls all surf pretty good and always make it hard when you meet them in the heat, but this time I'm so happy to beat them in the final "

Unlucky for Dyah Rahayu Dewi from Seminyak who surfed great in the first round heat but couldn't make it into the final after losing to the two girls from Padang and Sumatra in the semi final's. "Rohaye and Yuli surfed so well in these conditions, I suppose they just picked the right waves to make the good points, but the current is really strong and makes it really hard to find the right position, I've learned a good lesson today that will help me in the next events to further my ranking on the ISC tour. Said Diah Rahayu after the heat.

After the final of the women's ISC event had taken place it was time for girls of all ages to take to the beach and have fun with tons of activities on offer inside the main Girls Go Surfing Day area located just a few hundred meters up the beach.

On the main area there were surf lessons provided by Rip Curl School of Surf, which hosted 4 classes throughout the day and a total of 150 girls trying the sport and tasting the experience of surfing for the first time. Also on offer during the day was a Rip Curl Lomography photo competition where girls took pictures of each other in a special made Rip Curl booth with 10 best images being posted on Rip Curl Asia facebook - www.facebook.com/asiaripcurl

Other highlights and things on offer during the day were a beauty booth with massage, nail polish and temporary tattoo's, a T-Shirt design competition, water slide, Salsa dance lessons and to end the day a sunset BBQ and DJ party hosted by Skullcandy.

Rip Curl's Girls Go Surfing day is an annual event dedicated to introducing girls to surfing for the first time and giving young women surfers the change to hang out and have fun together on the beach on one special day. It also gives experienced girl surfers the opportunity to compete in a sanctioned Indonesian surfing championship event.

Hi readers,

I plan to go to " Help Safe Bali's Sea Turtles " tomorrow.

They need a safe and peaceful place to live, just like us.

Who would guess amongst the hundreds of thousands of residents and tourists that work and play at Kuta Beach that sea turtles continue to use this same stretch of sand as their nesting grounds?

Worldwide, six of seven species of sea turtles that swim the world’s oceans are threatened or endangered largely at the hand of humans. Sadly they also face many dangers as they travel the seas from accidental capture, poaching and the loss of nesting sites due to coastal development and beach pollution.

In Bali, the Olive Ridley species in particular, has been coming to the Kuta Beach area for centuries to lay their eggs. While Kuta Beach develops to be the most popular beach on the island, sea turtle populations have been declining for the past 7 years. With so much “un-natural” traffic on the beach, it was carefully decided by ProFauna group that upon finding nesting sites, the eggs should be relocated to a hatchery to improve their chance of survival.

From 2002 to 2009, a few dedicated individuals led by Agung Ngurah Tresna of Kuta Beach security and I Wayan Wiradnyana from ProFauna Indonesia, have been relocating the eggs to a humble hatchery facility, a small concrete sand bunker. As eggs hatch at the end of their two-month incubation period, the baby turtles are returned to the ocean the same day.

Recognizing the efforts above and the need for support, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia (CCAI) has offered a helping hand. Teaming up with Quiksilver, its partner in doing the Bali Beach Clean-Up program, we have built a permanent hatchery facility, the Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation or KBSTC. The new construction is expected to help prevent the animals from extinction. In the shape of a giant turtle See attached photograph, the construction is accompanied by information boards to bring awareness of the sea turtles history and future.

“In 2008, 1947 sea turtle eggs have been hatched and the numbers doubled to be 4054 in 2009. Up to May this year we have recorded more than 5000 eggs successfully laid in the KBSTC. This is a fantastic initial result,” said Peter Kelly, President Director of CCAI. “In addition to the Bali Beach Clean-Up program and the KBSTC, we also roll out Water for life program to provide clean water access to severe drought areas in Northern Bali. All these initiatives go hand-in-hand with the objective of the Bali Government to make the resort island an eco-responsible tourist destination,” Peter added.

Paul Hutson, South East Asia Director of Quiksilver shares similar remark about the KBSTC development. “Since mid 2008, CCAI and Quiksilver Indonesia have been active in cleaning major beaches in Bali. We are positive that cleaning beaches is part of encouraging sea turtles to return and nest at Kuta Beach.”

The KBSTC is hoping to release over 12 thousand baby sea turtles by end of 2010. The KBSTC conveniently located at the beachside front of Inna Kuta Beach Hotel and has received support from local Balinese authorities, ProFauna Indonesia and Bali Forestry. The KBSTC is open to the public free of charge to enable everyone to participate and experience the joy of saving these turtles.

Bali Teen Caught Making Love to 'Flirtatious' Cow

Denpasar. A Balinese teenager captured stark naked in the act of sexually penetrating a domestic cow claims he believed the animal was a young and beautiful girl.

The young man has been identified as Ngurah Alit, 18, an unemployed youth from the seaside village of Yeh Embang in Jembrana.

Village head Ida Bagus Legawa told the Jakarta Globe that a villager, identified as Gusti Ngurah Dinar, caught Alit committing bestiality “when he was standing naked and holding the cow’s ass.” He was standing on a mud terrace between two rice paddy fields.

A shocked Dinar escorted Alit to the village office for questioning, where he stated that he believed the cow, owned by Wayan Yasa, was a young and beautiful girl.

“She was calling to me, making flattering comments, then I had sex with her,” Alit told local officials.

As is usual in such situations — this is the second recorded instance of cow rape in Bali in about two years — the animal will be drowned at sea in a Pecaruan cleansing ceremony intended to rid the village of what Legawa described as “dirty behaviour.”

Alit will be cleansed in the ocean and must pay a fine of 2,000 traditional Balinese coins.

Wayan will be compensated Rp 5 million ($540) for the loss of his cow.

In 2008, elderly grandfather Nengah Sutarya, 70, was caught in the act of having sex with a cow that he also said had tempted him by claiming to be a virgin girl.

That cow was drowned because villagers believed the 70-year old had impregnated the unlucky animal.

Aktifitas pertama yang kita coba adalah SUPERBOWL, aku tidak terlalu takut untuk superbowl. Tetapi karena pertama kali, pastinya aku teriak kencang juga.

Aktifitas kedua yang kita coba adalah BOOMERANG, jantungku rasanya hampir copot waktu aku turun dari ketinggian 20 meter dan tiba-tiba naik keatas papan yang tinggi, aku pikir aku bakalan keluar dari jalur dan terjatuh keluar arena. Ternyata balik ke area dan Boomerang beneran bikin aku teriak kencang.

Untuk Superbowl dan Boomerang, antrinya boookkkkkkk puanjangggggg amirrrrrrr ... dan lagi tangganya tinggi banget. Jadi mesti hati-hati waktu antri.

Setelah Boomerang, aku coba SMASHDOWN. Aktifitas meluncur bebas dengan kemiringan 60derajat dan kecepatan hingga 70km/jam. Lumayan cepat kan, karena yang meluncur dengan kecepatan segitu itu bukan mobil atau sepeda motor, tetapi aku sendiri dan sendirian lagi. Ngga boleh pake kaos jadi aku pakai bikini saja karena kaos bisa menghambat saat meluncur. Tanpa tube / sliding board / apapun .. cuma badan aja !!!

Pertama loncat aku ngga berani, dan memang ngga ada orang yang antri.

Waktu aku siap-siap meluncur bebas, aku berpikir ah ngga taulah yang penting meluncur. Ternyataaaa hahahaha jantungku hampir copot lebih parah dari Boomerang ...

Aku ngga pernah ngerasa setakut itu dihidupku hahahaha ... tapi ternyata dalam hitungan detik aku udah dibawah dan ketawa liat orang yang ada didepanku.

Petugasnya sampai nanya, dia dari mana? Dan temenku bilang dari Indonesia. Mungkin dipikirnya kok berani ya mungkin karena jarang banget cewek Indonesia yang berani coba Smash Down.

Untung coba yang paling menakutkan dulu, dan baru coba yang lainnya.

Setelah Smash Down, kita coba RACE TRACK ... Meluncur dengan sliding board kayak boogie board gitu dengan posisi kepala lebih dulu dari ketinggian sekitar 40 meter (mungkin) tetep aja aku ngga bisa lebih cepat dari yang temanku karena dia lebih gede 2 kali lipat dari badanku.

Setelah Race Track, kita coba menenangkan diri di LAZY RIVER ... cuma duduk ditube aja dan mengikuti flow nya air di river itu.

Setelah agak mendingan, kita mulai cari mana yang bisa bikin sport jantung hahaha ...

Kita coba MACARONI & RAFT RIVER ... dan MACARONI tuh bener2 bikin aku teriak kencengggggggg bangetttttt ... karena waktu masuk ke tube macaroninya dan super gelap didalam. Kita ngga tau apa yang bakalan terjadi kemudian dalam keadaan meluncur berbaring di tube.

RAFT RIVER hampir sama seperti Macaroni tetapi cuma terbuka dan tidak gelap. Jadi aku ngga terlalu takut.

Nahhhhh .. aktifitas paling baru yang cuma berumur 3 hari saja adalah CLIMAX, aktifitas ini pertama kita harus berdiri diatas papan yang dihubungkan dengan pipa yang sangat panjang .. dan pada hitungan ketiga papan itu akan dibuka oleh petugas dan kita dibiarkan meluncur dengan kecepatan 70km/jam dan didalam pipa !!!! dan dalam hitungan detik tiba-tiba saja aku udah dibawah ... Aku teriak kenceng banget dari atas sampai bawah hahaha ...

Dari semua aktivitas, yang paling aku suka .. MACARONI karena sampai 4 kali meluncur, trus BOOMERANG 2 kali meluncur , selanjutnya adalah SMASH DOWN dan CLIMAX ...

Tetapi yang paling menakutkan adalah Smash Down dan Climax karena aku harus melakukannya sendiri tanpa teman.

Yang bagus lagi adalah naik turun tangganya haha .. lumayan untuk olahraga biar sehat.

Dan akhir kata, aku pulang dengan badan pegal-pegal tetapi hati senang karena bisa teriak sekencang-kencangnya sambil menikmati semua aktifitas di Waterbom Park Kuta - Bali.

Kost di Bali

Untuk tempat tinggal di Bali, kamar kost bervariasi juga harganya.

Dari yang cuma 200.000 ribu sampai diatas 2 juta rupiah.

1.) Kost di daerah Legian.

Dibelakang jalan Legian, ada jalan Mataram dan Majapahit.

Banyak kost disewakan disana. Lokasi memang dekat dengan jalan Legian dan juga kalau di jalan legian harga disesuaikan dengan pengunjunganya para turis asing.

Tetapi di jalan Mataram dan Majapahit harga di sesuaikan dengan harga untuk penduduk lokal.

Harga kost dari 300.000 sampai 600.000 dengan ada toilet dikamar.

Untuk di jalan Mataram memang agak bising karena jalan tersebut dijadikan jalan potong dari Legian ke jalan Dewi Sri / Sunset Road. Jadi banyak kendaraan yang lalu lalang sampai dini hari dikarenakan juga jalan Mataram berlokasi sangat dekat dengan Legian, jadi untuk lokasi rumah yang berdekatan dengan beberapa club malam akan terganggu dengan suara musik dari club malam tersebut.

Banyak tempat makan murah di jalan mataram.

Diantara jalan Mataram / Majapahit ada beberapa jalan kecil / gang kecil yang menghubungkan kedua jalan tersebut. Disana juga banyak kost yang disewakan.

Kost di sekitar kedua jalan ini sangat dimintai para pekerja yang bekerja di Legian karena lokasinya yang sangat strategis.

Ada juga beberapa kost di gang bedugul, di Poppies 2. Temanku dulu pernah kost disana tahun 2006 dan harga perbulan 300.000rupiah dengan fasilitas toilet didalam.

Ada rumah disewakan di jalan benesari, poppies 2 ... 3juta satu bulan, tanpa kolam renang.

2. Kost di Denpasar

Kost di Denpasar juga bervariasi dan harganya lebih murah dari daerah Legian / Seminyak.

Temanku kost di daerah jalan Imam Bonjol dengan harga 400.000 perbulan dengan kondisi kamar yang sangat bersih dan terawat.

Lokasinya bersebelahan dengan Asa Paris Imam Bonjol.

3. Kost di daerah Glogor Carik.

Banyak orang tinggal di Glogor Carik karena lokasinya yang sangat strategis.

Sangat dekat dengan Jalan Bypass Sunset Road and By Pass I Gusti Ngurah Rai.

Juga dekat dengan Jalan Imam Bonjol.

Harga kost juga bervariasi. Dari harga 300.000 rupiah sebulan sampai 1.700.000 rupiah. Fasilitas juga bervariasi, yang 300.000 sampai 500.000 biasanya hanya kamar saja dengan toilet di dalam.

Untuk yang diatas 1 juta perbulan, biasanya lengkap dengan perabot.

Jika ada yang butuh kamar kost yang lengkap dengan perabot didaerah Glogor Carik, bisa hubungi Pak Kadi - 081236007776. Lokasi complex kost beliau ada di jalan Pulau Galang.

Harga kamar kost yang disewakan di lokasi yang beliau kelola dari 1.350.000 rupiah sampai 1.750.000 rupiah perbulan. (belum termasuk air listrik)

Aku ada ide juga, kalau misal tinggal di Bali sebulan dan budget sampai 1.500.000 rupiah perbulan daripada bayar hotel 200.000 rupiah perhari kan lebih irit sewa kost dengan harga 1.500.000 perbulan.

Dan banyak tempat makan murah dan tempat laundry murah.

Ecotourism: The Green Way

Tourism often has a negative effect on the environment, and Bali is no exception. Several hotels are leading the way in adopting an eco-friendly approach to keeping their guests happy. Anita Surewicz reports.

Boasting vibrant culture, breathtaking mountains and hundreds of kilometers of pristine beaches and tropical forests, Bali remains one of Asia’s premiere tourist hot-spots. However, like many locations that have borne the brunt of fast-paced development of tourism and industrial infrastructure, the sheer number of visitors to Bali is increasingly placing the island’s environment and culture under pressure. Bali is currently facing numerous environmental issues such as pollution, loss of important natural systems, lack of water and electricity and inappropriate development that impacts on local communities.

Agung Wardene, the executive director of the Bali chapter of the environmental group WALHI, points to tourism as the main cause of the island’s environmental degradation.

“With more hotels being built every day the demand for water is growing. Water shortage is a huge problem. Most water in Bali is used up by hotels, creating problems between the tourism industry and farmers,” he says.

Bali’s economy relies on tourism, and the tourism industry in turn relies on the island’s natural assets as a draw card for visitors. How environmental and cultural degradation posed by tourism is managed or mismanaged is crucial to the future viability of Bali as a tourist destination.

Agung says that the current level of expansion within the tourism sector is not sustainable.

“Tourists come to Bali to enjoy the beaches and nature, building more luxury hotels and infrastructure will not help tourism in the long run because it will damage the environment,” he says. “The current tourism policy needs to be re-evaluated.”

Despite inadequate regulation enforcement and lack of incentives, many players in Bali’s tourism industry have been proactive in establishing sustainable tourism practices.

Linda vant Hoff, the co-proprietor of the Sarinbuana Eco Lodge and an avid environmentalist, says that the international market wants more responsible environmental management.

“If the government won't enforce [environmental management regulations], the industry just has to get on with it anyway... To see the future, look at the high occupancy, international standards and efficient operations in the hotels in Bali that have worked through an involved process to achieve Certification via Green Globe.”

Heeding the call, some hotel owners on the island have instituted ambitious environmental projects, from water treatment and conservation to organic farming of produce for their restaurants.

And many are optimistic about ecotourism being the way of the future.

“In terms of the environment and tourism - the news is all good, if you see the environment as an opportunity to grow and strengthen your business... I predict those tourism businesses that embrace a win-win paradigm of ethical and sustainable management will definitely prosper in the future,” said vant Hoff.

Numerous eco-lodges and eco-village stays have been mushrooming across the island, not only raising environmental awareness among visitors, but also incorporating the three major pillars of economy, community involvement and ecological conservation.

Taking aside the usual eco management policies – water conservation, recycling, energy saving, focus on organic produce and employing people from local areas – here is the rundown on what makes Bali’s so-called eco-accommodation unique.

Sarinbuana Eco Lodge

Sarinbuana Eco Lodge, situated on the slopes of Mount Batukaru, is described by its owners Norm and Linda vant Hoff as a place to be inspired by the simple (yet complex) subsistence farming community.

While the project has humble beginnings dating back to 1989, when Norm contracted a piece of land with a local family and built a simple bungalow from coconut wood and bamboo, over the years the vant Hoffs have gradually added accommodation for guests to stay on the property.

Today, Sarinbuana offers a choice of accommodation from luxurious private bungalows made from local timber and bamboo to simple room lodgings above a local warung.

Guests can join a variety of classes run by members of the local community in activities such as Balinese/Indonesian cooking, Balinese calligraphy or Balinese massage. In fact, many guests come to the lodge to learn about sustainability issues at the regular Permaculture and Sustainability workshops.

The lodge also offers informative walks and tours such as a three hour walk through the largest protected rainforest in Bali, or a day trek to the summit of Mt. Batukaru, a 2,200- meter extinct volcano.

“We have trained five local people to be trekking guides, some in the beginning were not able to speak any English or had no understanding of preserving the environment, now they are guiding guests every day in the rainforest sharing their knowledge ... of sustainability,” says Linda vant Hoff.

The recently opened Bali Mountain Retreat (BMR), located at 700 meters on the slopes of Mt. Batukaru, commands panoramic views of Bali, where the air is clean and the water is directly fed from a spring on the mountain.

“The water is stored in a large concrete tank for drier times, then UV filtered and 1micron filtered for drinking ... This water supply can not be turned off so the overflow becomes part of the catchments again,” says Rebecca Kaal, BMR’s co-proprietor.

The accommodation encompasses a blend of traditional Balinese & contemporary Asian styles, ranging from well-appointed rooms in a handcrafted teak house to comfortable bungalows.

Available activities include guided walks through the rice fields and gardens, guided treks up the mountain or through the protected mountain forest as well as cycling tours.

“Along with neighboring businesses and local villagers, BMR is actively involved in the preservation of the local Montane forest by promoting eco friendly trekking around this mountain to raise awareness and as an alternative industry for locals,” says Kaal.

Uyah Amed Hotel

The idea for Uyah Amed Hotel originated when its operators noticed that an increasing number of salt production fields in Amed, East Bali, were either left unused or sold to make way for tourist accommodation. The hotel aims to preserve this tradition by promoting production of salt from seawater as a point of interest to tourists.

“The salt produced on our premises is panned by the people from Amed with a guarantee for them that we purchase their share (50 percent) of the harvest if they want to sell it,” says I Nyoman Sudiana, the hotel’s Balinese co-owner.

Supporting and working with the local community of Amed plays a big role in the hotel’s operation.

“All out staff come from the area ... Since we also train our staff on environmental matters they will eventually distribute this knowledge in the village,” says I Nyoman Sudiana.

Puri Lumbung Cottages are located between 500 and 1,200 meters above sea level in the cool mountain air of the small village of Munduk in Buleleng regency, North Bali.

The accommodation is unique in that it has been fashioned from disused 80-year-old lumbung (traditional rice granaries).

The eco-friendly luxury resort of Agung Bali Nirwana, located in Sambirenteng, North Bali, prides itself on using modern technology to deliver quality and comfort without detriment to the environment.

The resort claims to sport Indonesia’s first ever pure water swimming pool. Not just aesthetically pleasing, no chlorine, bromide or salt is ever used in the pool.

“Water is recirculated over the negative edge onto small rocks, then through sand-box filters to remove smaller particles. Bacteria and algae are killed by the specially designed UV sterilization system. What to look out for

In recent years “ecotourism” and “eco lodges” have become buzzwords used by organizations and people dedicated to environmental conservation and supporting local communities, as well as those who market their establishments as environmentally friendly for economic reasons with little regard for the actual destination. Some properties follow the practice of “green wash”, or in other words claim to be in the business of sustainable tourism but in reality are not. While ascertaining which establishments are truly “green” can be a hefty task, here are some questions you can ask the hotel owner when deciding where to stay on your next holiday.

- Does the hotel use renewable energy and take power consumption measures?

- Does the hotel recycle its waste and waste water?

- Does the hotel practice water conservation if it is in an area where this is an issue?

- Does the hotel use biodegradable cleaning products?

- Does the hotel supply fresh towels and sheets daily? This is both a waste of water and energy.

- Does the hotel have or support an environmental program aimed at protecting the surrounding area?

- Does the hotel hire local employees, train and pay them a fair wage?

- Does the hotel purchase food and products locally, where possible?

- Does the hotel provide information on local culture and conservation to educate its guests about the surrounding area?

Waktu aku memutuskan pindah ke Bali di bulan Agustus 2009, hal-hal yang aku pelajari sebagai pendatang di pulau dewata ini adalah sebagai berikut :

1. Bandara Internasional Ngurah Rai

Lokasi bandara Internasional Ngurah Rai di Kuta, bukan di Denpasar.

Untuk mendapatkan layanan taxi, anda harus memesan di taxi counter yang ada di bandara. Biaya sudah ditentukan pihak pengelola taxi bandara sesuai dengan jauh dekatnya tempat tujuan.

Ada juga beberapa orang yang keluar bandara untuk mendapatkan layanan taxi, tetapi pastikan bahwa anda meminta supir taxi menjalankan argo / meter taxi.

Jarak dari Airport ke Kuta / Legian hanya sekitar 10 menit.
Banyak jalan di Kuta yang menggunakan jalur 1 arah, sangat berbeda dengan kota lain di Indonesia.

Contoh biaya dari Airport ke Legian (Kuta) dengan menggunakan non-taxi airport hanya sekitar 20.000 rupiah. Tetapi jika menggunakan airport taxi bisa dikenakan biaya 50.000 rupiah.

2.) Transportasi di Bali

Transportasi di Bali sangat berbeda dengan daerah-daerah yang sudah pernah aku kunjungi. Contohnya di Batam, sangat banyak taxi atau angkutan umum yang lainnya.
Tetapi di Bali hanya taxi dengan menggunakan argo.
Angkutan umum seperti bemo hanya ada di denpasar dan di sanur tetapi tidak di Kuta.

Rata-rata warga Bali menggunakan sepeda motor untuk pergi kemanapun.

Di Bali banyak tempat persewaaan sepeda motor dan mobil dengan harga yang bervariasi.

Aku menyewa sepeda motor Mio dengan harga 400.000 rupiah perbulan dari Ibu Niluh : 08124657825. Tinggal telpon saja Ibu Niluh dan beliau akan mengantarkan sepeda motor ke tempat tinggalmu.

Itu harga paling murah yang aku bisa dapatkan. Untuk harga sewa perhari biasanya dari harga 30,000 - 40.000 rupiah.

Untuk sewa mobil harganya bervariasi, tergantung tipe mobil apa yang anda ingin sewa.
Dari harga 80.000 rupiah sampai 300.000 rupiah perhari.

My dad from Moru, East of Nusa Tenggara and my mom from Surabaya, East of Java.

I was born in East of Java and grown up in Central of Java. I moved to Batam Island, Riau in end of 1997 and lived there for 10 years.

I had been worked in Batam Island (Nov 1997-Feb 2008), Bintan Island (Feb-Jun 2008), Sibolga - North Sumatera (Oct-Dec 2008), Lombok Island (Feb-Aug 2009).

I moved to Bali since Aug 2009 and decided to live and settle down here until my next destination.

I love live in Bali, I love the beach, I love simple life, I love Bali social life and for sure I love balinese culture!
