Getting ready for the new year...

As we look ahead to 2013, I'm really starting to dread it. While I know that there will be a ton of great things this coming year, it makes me sad to think that Nick will miss out on most of them. Military life means sacrifice, for all of us. This isn't the first time he's deployed, it's not the first time he's deployed since we've been together, but it's the first time he's deployed since we got married and had Aidan. I still completely think that the timing is good, Aidan's at an age where time will really fly for him. I also know that it's kinda crappy timing, because Nick will miss a lot of milestones. I know that is something that he's really worried about and sad about.

I'm looking into all kinds of ways to keep us connected during deployment. We know from others that have been to the same base as Nick's going that there will be internet and skype and the like. I'm also looking to make some videos and recordable books before he leaves.

Anyway. It's been a mostly great year with a few really crappy things thrown in. Aidan turned a year old in October, and we had an awesome party for him. A week later our back yard was destroyed by hurricane Sandy. We still have a ton of damage that hasn't been cleaned up, plus we have 2 huge trees in pieces all over the back yard that still need to be cut up and taking to my in laws for fire wood.

The worst part of the year was just a few days ago. Last Thursday (just a few days before Christmas) we lost our precious tiger cat, Keegan. We still (and probably never will) have any idea what caused him to leave us, but none the less, it was completely heartbreaking. I'm not really ready to talk about it, but I will post about it when I'm ready.

But, anyway. This has kinda just been a giant ramble. Oh, well. I've been sitting at the local indoor play place with Aidan and our friend Jordynn from church, while they play, but I'm pretty sure that they are both ready to go get something to eat now. So, for now, I'll end. Keep any eye out for more posts as 2012 comes to and end and 2013 starts off (hopefully on the right foot!).

An update of sorts

It's been a long time since we've posted. I think my last post was just before Sandy hit. We lost power for about 4 days, but thankfully we had a generator that helped with it. Actually at one point we had 2 generators going during the day. We were able to keep the deep freezer in our basement, our refrigerator, and some lights on with one of them. When we got the second from my in laws, we were able to get it to run our water pump and heater, and thankfully, our cable and tv. I say thankfully for that stuff, because it was able to keep Aidan distracted for the most part. He knew that things were not right, and every time the generators ran out of fuel and shut off, he was petrified.

During the storm, we lost one tree in our back yard. It unfortunately took out our pool and damaged our volleyball court and retaining wall.

Yeah, our yard pretty much still looks like that. Some of the wood has been taken to my inlaws, and Nick and his best friend Mike, and our neighbor had to fall another tree, for fear that it would hit the house if it came down (it was damaged in last years hurricane Irene).

In November, Nick was promoted to Master Sergent! We couldn't be prouder of him. He deserves it, and has been working his butt off. Aidan and I were able to go to the small ceremony they had and 'pin' his rank on. It's the first time in the fire department that family has been there to pin. I'm so happy we got to go!

We are gearing up for our first 'family' deployment. Nick has been deployed countless times, and we've been through one together (before we were married), but this will be a first, not only as a married couple, but as parents. I'm not going to lie, I'm not excited about it, but it is what it is, and I think that in the grand scheme of things, it's decent timing. Aidan is at the age that hopefully it won't affect him too much.

Other then that we're gearing up for Christmas, and the start of a new year. Hopefully it's less eventful then the end of 2012 has been!

Aidan is 14 months now. He's starting to catch up on his weight gain, at 22.8 pounds and he's getting super tall. 18 month clothes have finally started to be right in the waist, and they don't seem to be as long as they once were. I still wholeheartedly believe that there needs to be a clothing size between 12 and 18 months! He's signing and talking alot more, and smart as a whip. He loves to color and finger paint and build. His favorite shows are Bubble Guppies and Super Why. He has learned to climb on anything and everything. When you ask him if he's hungry, he runs to the baby gate. He goes to his chair (his high chair in the dinning room) when you tell him to, and goes to grandma's room when we tell him it's time for a clean bum. At night, if you ask him if hes' ready for bed, he runs to the gate by grandma's room, cause that's where we change him for bed. Over the last week, his grandma (my mom) put him to bed, while Nick and I were at Christmas parties with the guys from his shift at the sub base. Since then, he wants to climb the stairs on his own at bed time. {my mom has MS, and can't carry him up the stairs, so when she puts him to bed, he has to go up the stairs on his own, and now he gets mad if we carry him, lol} He is cutting a total of 8 teeth (painfully) slowly. We are very thankful for his amber necklace, teething tablets, and baby Tylenol! I pray these things come in soon, and leave my poor boy alone for awhile.

Oh, and, daddy gave Aidan his first hair cut! I held him, while daddy used the clippers on him. I cried. Aidan thought it was cool. He kept trying to turn his head to see what daddy was doing. He didn't make a peep. I can't believe that my little boy is growing up so fast!

We also attended our very first FRG event, which was the Christmas party. It was awesome. I've started to volunteer, so I got to help with it, too. It was amazing, Hasbro donates toys for all the kids. I got to help wrap them. Santa came on one of Daddy's firetrucks to the party, and daddy was right up there with him. Aidan thought that was the best, but he refused to get near Santa...he's not a fan this year.

We went and picked out our tree a couple weeks ago, which was fun. Aidan had a blast, even though it was raining and he was dressed like the abominable snow baby!

Well, I think that's enough for one night. We have a lot of Christmas gift wrapping and gift making to do over the next few days! I promise to keep up with blogging from now on. I can't wait for Christmas!!

Sandy and Frankenstorm and lions, Oh My!

I know I've been slacking around here for a couple weeks. Aidan turned 1 on the 12th and then we had his party on the 20th. In our house. I think once I looked it over, there were upwards of 50 people. In our house. Have I mentioned that our house is only just over 1200 square feet? While we did do the majority of the party outside in our back yard, when we did the cake, everyone came in. To our HOUSE. It was CRAZY. But it was a ton of fun! The only bitter sweet moment about it was...I don't have a baby anymore. I have a 1 year old toddler. Holy crap! When did that happen? It seems like just yesterday we were here:

I've lost my little man. He's growing into an inquisitive, curious, amazing, smart boy. Right before our eyes.

So that's the condensed version of him turning 1. I'll come back with more detail after things settle down from the storm.

On to Sandy and Frankenstrom. Unless you live under a rock or something, you know that there's this hurricane Sandy, that's heading up the east coast. And you also know that it's merged with a nor'easter. This has huge implications for us, here in 'Lil Rhody. Nick's volunteered to be recalled should his unit be needed. But at the same time, it's possible that once he gets to work (civi job on the sub base near here) then he may be stuck there until Thursday. Either way, it's going to suck. Nick got our generator working to day (Thank you Jesus!!) so tomorrow while he's home, he'll show me how to use it, and what can and can not be plugged into it. Unfortunately, we don't have it hard wired to our house, so the only things we can use it for is the fridge in our kitchen, the deep freezer in the basement, the sump pump if we need it, and the stove or microwave. I'm not looking forward to this. When it happened last year I was 36ish weeks pregnant. We had no power, no water (we have a well, and the pump doesn't work without power) We were without power from 11am Sunday morning until about 4 the following Wednesday. It sucked, but we got through it. I know that we will this time, too, but it feels different this time. I'm not sure if it's because we have Aidan now, or because there's a very real possibility that Nick won't be home with us for ANY of the storm. I don't know, I just know that I'm going to be super happy when this is over.

Kristian Regal Review

We were fortunate enough to be chosen to try Kristian Regal sparkling juice drinks. Oh, my gosh! They are soooooo good. We tried to wait for a semi special occasion to try them. In reality, the day they came was a special occasion, as a cousin from out of state was here visiting for work. However, we got so busy visiting, that we forgot about the drinks. Fail. So the next best thing was to have them with a special dinner. A few weeks ago, I went all domestic, and created a menu plan for the week, and went shopping for all the supplies. That also didn't turn out the way I had planned, but hey, what does? Anyway. I made a nice beef stew, that consisted of all farmers market ingredients. Everything was fresh. And oh, so yummy. So I broke out the pomegranate apple sparkling juice. It was fantastic. It tasted perfect with our dinner. My mom and I tried a glass each first, and then Nick finished off the bottle.

The bottles look just like champagne bottles (only without a cork). The best part? The bottle are deposit bottles in some states! We love deposit bottles...while RI doesn't redeem them, CT does, so we save them and take them to base every few weeks, and put the money in Aidan's piggy bank. Anyway, I digress. Long story, kinda shorter...Try these sparkling juices. They would be a perfect non-alcoholic alternative for upcoming holiday meals!

For the first 17 years of my life, “Home” was my Dad’s next assignment. I was born in Birmingham, Alabama and, with my older sister, moved almost every three years. By the time my Dad retired from the Air Force, I had enrolled in nine different schools including three High Schools, graduating in Tucson, Arizona. When my parents said they were purchasing a home, I thought they were just kidding me. I loved moving which meant a new adventure. I have always considered myself very fortunate to have been stationed in England and Taiwan, S. Carolina, Massachusetts, Georgia and finally in Arizona.

I was always captivated by light refraction. When I was little, I remember loving to play with puddles in the road; it was even better if there was a little bit of oil in the puddle. The puddle would have the prettiest rainbows created by the oil.

My husband’s mother had the most exquisite almond shaped crystal hanging in their window. Seeing the rainbows dancing around the room when the sun hit the crystal was mesmerizing. Years later, that same crystal now hangs in our window and I fondly smile every time I see it.
Whether it’s a song, a flower, or maybe even a colorful food item such as “salsa”, (I do have a sun catcher named Salsa) I see every day life as a potential creation. It’s a great challenge to try and re-create it. I love custom orders and get the biggest kick out of receiving photos of whole rooms, wall paper and furniture. Since I also create jewelry, purse and cell phone jewelry and zipper pulls, I have received many photos of purses, clothes and material for matching.

I once had a customer who wanted a special sun catcher for a relative who loved to camp. I suggested a pine tree…this is what I designed. The more a customer can share, the better. After all, it has to be “just right”. Nothing less will do.

I'm just trying to decorate the world...one sun catcher at a time.

Aidan's 11 month update

Geez, by the time we get this posted, he'll be a year! Man, am I (Amy) behind right about now! 11 months is proving to be one of the more difficult transitional months we've had with Aidan. He's much more independent, except when it comes to bed time. I'll get to that in a minute. He didn't have a well baby check up this month, but has been to the doctor a couple times. I honestly right this second can't remember why we took him the first time, but, exactly 3 weeks later, he got sick for the first time. Ever. I don't count the stuff he went through with his stomach due to his food allergies as being sick. Just a bump in the road. This time he was for real sick. Couldn't breath, runny nose, just plain miserable. Poor monkey. That lasted about a week, and he's finally just about back to normal.

Now, on to miles stones. He lost a little bit of weight since his first visit (4 oz.) and as of last week he weighs 19.16oz. He was 20 pounds at his first visit. I haven't measured him in length, but if it helps, 12 month clothes are too short, but 18 month clothes are just a bit too long (and he swims in the waist...anyone know where I can find a toddler belt??). He is now a full out walker, and it's nearly impossible to get him to stand/sit still. Ever. Even when he's eating. We put him in his high chair for meals, and he still rocks and kicks, and moves and talks. It's so funny, but makes things quite messy. He can tear a room apart in 5.3 seconds, and smile and laugh the whole time.

He loves PBS shows. Super Why! is his favorite. He laughs and squeals and bounces around as soon as he hears the music. He also loves The Big Bang Theory. Seeing him dance to Barenaked Ladies is AWESOME, lol. He's picking up more and really interacting while we play. He loves Wee Wedgits, and is starting to be able to stack them on his own. He loves books (and chewing them) and will bring one of us a book to read to him with a huge smile on his face.

He looks more and more like daddy every day, and I honestly wouldn't trade it for the world.

He now signs milk, more, all done and says, all done, yeah, dada, mama, kitty, done (which I think might really be down), baba, he has said a handful of other words, but not on a regular basis.

I think that pretty much sums it up. In 2 weeks, he will be a YEAR old!. We are busy getting ready for his Halloween themed party. I can't wait to share that post with you! I can't believe that my baby will be a year old in just a couple weeks. It's gone by so fast!!

Loveable Labels {Review and Giveaway} {ends 9/30}

I'm not gonna lie. I never thought about labeling Aidan's stuff. I mean, I knew eventually I'd have to for summer camp or something like that, but at this age, the thought never crossed my mind. Never the less, I contacted Loveable Labels to see about doing a review. In all honesty, I had no clue what I was going to do with 165 labels. Then we joined the Y.

You may remember that Aidan has food allergies. Nothing life threatening, but life altering for sure. I adjust to it without really thinking. Mostly taking food I know is safe for him with us when ever we go out. I know there are some things out and about that he can have and we stick to those.

That brings me to the labels. When we started going to the Y, Aidan started to go to child care at the Y. On the sign in sheet asks about allergies. So, each time I take him in, I sign him in and write down his allergies. One day, I went back to pick him up, they were looking for a sippy cup. They said it was the same color as Aidan's, but his wasn't the one they were missing. That made me think. I didn't have any of his cups labeled. Not even his cooler bag. Just his diaper bag, and that was only labeled with a piece for masking tape. That was a huge (and scary) wake up call. What if they had given Aidan the wrong cup? What if it had had milk in it? At that moment, I knew what I was going to do with those 165 labels.

No joke, I have labeled every cup, every lid, his cooler bag has 2 labels, his diaper bag has 2 labels. His drawer with his food in our kitchen is labeled. The cabinet with more food and all his dishes is labeled. I admit, I may have gone overboard. But, when it comes to Aidan's safety, I don't think there's any such thing.

Boba Baby Carrier {Review & Giveaway}

We're going to do this review in a he said, she said fashion. I (Amy) will give the She said version, and Nick will (obviously) be the He said. As in any good relationship. Ladies first ;)

She Said:

Can I just tell you how excited I was to get a Boba baby carrier for review? I love wearing Aidan. That sounds funny doesn't it? I digress. I love having Aidan close to me. I can't get enough of this kid. I also like having my hands and arms free while shopping or walking or eating. I would love to tell you that wearing him discourages people from wanting to touch him all the time, but I would be lying. However, wearing him makes it harder got them to touch his face. I still don't really like it, but at least they can really only get to his legs.

Ok, so on to the review. When we found out that we had been approved for the carrier review and giveaway, I let Nick pick out which one he wanted. The last carrier we had was purple and flowered. (Yes, I know, I have a boy, but it was a $180 dollar carrier I got at a consignment sale for $80, I overlooked the fashion of it, lol) He of course, chose the Camo one:

We got the Boba just before leaving on our first of 2 family trips. We were heading to NY to visit family. I honestly about jumped up and down when it got delivered. We packed it in the car and headed for NY. A couple days into out visit, we went to do some sight seeing, so I whipped out the Boba, and put Aidan in it for the first time. He's used to being in a carrier, but I wasn't sure how he would react to the new one. No worries! He looked around, could see all around him, and could have his hands in or out, depending on what he wanted to do. I had my teething bling on, so he was pretty intent on that at the time (He popped 3 teeth that trip).

Since that first time, I have worn Aidan in the Boba every single chance I get. Sometimes, I have have to let daddy wear him, too. One of my favorite baby wearing experiences with the Boba was when my mom, Aidan and I were at Wal-Mart, getting last minute things before Nick, Aidan and I headed to New Hampshire for a few days. We had been in Wal-Mart for at least an hour, people were oooin and aahhhing over him, as always. It was creeping closer and closer to nap time, and Aidan started giving me his signals. Rubbing his eyes and pulling his hair. So I put the hood up over him, figuring that he would probably fight it, but to my surprise, within about 5 minutes he was out like a light...arms folded on my chest, head down, out. It has happened a few time since then, but, I just thought that was the cutest thing ever!

Overall, I absolutely love our carrier. I will not use another one. We haven't tried a back carry, since he just this week hit 20 pounds. We also have not tried the foot straps as he's still too young, but once he hits the age for them I'm sure they will be a plus. I also love the fact that we can wear him until he's 45 pounds! Yay for saving mommy (and daddy's) back! But I love the fact that when we have another baby, we don't have to worry about an insert, or anything like that, just snap a few snaps and we're good to go. It's super easy to get on and off for me. I don't need help getting a million clips together, there's not 3lock clips, it's just simple. And comfortable. And, yes, I'm going there, I can use the restroom while wearing him. There, I said it. But all you mama's you there know that sometimes, you just don't have another choice!

I give this carrier my mama seal of approval. Now I'll hand the blog over to Nick for his He said.

He Said:

Overall I was impressed with the Boba, but I did have a few minor issues with it. I am a fan of how Aidan sits in it - it seems that it is more comfortable for him (not that other ones were uncomfortable). It feels like it wraps him up better, supporting him more without having his little legs at weird angles. It may have been the placement of how I had the straps, but it seemed like he fit to me better and more comfortable than other carriers. This is especially important right now because I have been have back issues from an accident I was in. There is no strain or discomfort on my back - it almost acts like a back brace. Aidan seemed to really be able to snuggle up to me better and more frequently instead of leaning his head back, twisting around, or trying to kick and grab everything in sight. Don't get me wrong, he still has the ability to reach out with his little paws and move his legs around, but it seems like he prefers to keep everything inside the car until the ride comes to a complete stop. I've noticed him to be more calm - never protesting to be placed in it with Daddy or Mommy. He likes the hood when it is too sunny out, also.

We got the chance to give a real great test a few weeks ago while we were on vacation in New Hampshire. DADDIES LISTEN UP!!!! I love mountain climbing and hiking and have been doing so for roughly twenty years now. I have been looking so forward to being able to go hiking/mountain climbing with my son for the first time. Amy and I were anxious to see how it would hold up in the Great Outdoors. We ended up hiking a little over two miles round trip (I know - a very short test by hikers' standards) up and down Eagle Mountain in Jackson. The terrain was a little rough in some spots and a bit steep, but I had no trouble taking Aidan up in the Boba. It fit just fine and, once again, seemed to give my back support while remaining comfortable to him. So comfortable, in fact, that on the way back down the mountain, my little outdoors-man fell asleep like he was being rocked in a cradle! That says a lot considering the circumstances! DISCLAIMER: Don't get me wrong, I'm not encouraging anyone to go out and buy any carrier and test them out by hiking up a mountain with an infant or toddler. I have years of experience and would never put my son at risk of danger. Don't try that unless you have experience and know what you are doing!

So here are the few issues I have, and it could just be operator error. I find it difficult to reach the top strap in the back at my shoulders. I can't quite bend my arms that easily and I am pretty flexible. It seems Amy can reach that strap much easier on herself than I can. She has to help me get that when I put it on. This can be a big problem if I am all alone with Aidan and wish to use it. I feel that people with a broader chest or shoulders than me may have a more difficulty with it. Maybe that can be solved by adjusting a strap somewhere, I just haven't tried that yet. I'm hesitant to adjust any straps because once its on, it just seems to fit perfectly. To go along with that issue, when I initially put it on, it is very awkward and uncomfortable on my shoulders (I know I just said it fits perfectly). It's not until Amy buckles that top back shoulder strap that everything comes in and it fits well. That's especially tough if I am by myself. That could be more difficult for a person with broader shoulders. Again, that could be easily fixed by adjusting a strap here or there.

All in all, I am very pleased and would recommend this product for parents. Once Aidan is all strapped in properly, it fits very comfortably for the both of us. I feel so much closer to him and he seems much calmer - almost happier in the Boba as opposed to other carriers. It supports both you and your child well and balances the child's weight perfectly, while being fairly easy to operate. At least go to a store that sells them or ask someone you know who has one and try it out - you should be pleased!

We Say:

We've discovered that, while Nick might have a harder time getting things clipped, I have no trouble. This is the first carrier we have used that hasn't felt way too long on me. I'm sure in time, Nick will be able to get it clasped on his own. In fact, I know he has done it on at least one occasion ;) Other carriers seemed to throw us off balance and change our centers of gravity. Especially if Aidan is particularly squirmy that day. The Boba doesn't. We can have Aidan in there on his squirmiest day, and no matter how much he turns and turns and tries to stare at the ceiling, or whatever, we never feel pulled by him or the carrier. It almost becomes a part of you. Aidan has never once cried, or protested at all while we put him into his Boba carrier. In fact, we both seem to recall a time or two that he cried when we took him out of it! We still have the freedom to tickle him, give him kisses, or raspberries! It's like having an extra set of arms. The Boba is one set or arms, lovingly cradling and keeping our son safe, while our arms are free to do what we need to, never needing to worry about Aidan's safety in the carrier.

Here, There and Everywhere...

I feel like that's where we've been. In reality, we kinda have. We spent almost a week in NY with my family, then shortly after we were off to New Hampshire with friends. In NY I get very little cell service, let alone 3G. Therefore, no blogging, no facebook, basically I fall of the face of the planet. We were home for less then a week when we left for New Hampshire, and well, that was our vacation, so while I did get on facebook, and made some posts to Instagram, I didn't touch my computer the entire time. Truth be told, this is the first time I've turned it on in a couple weeks. I had been doing so much with the blog, and Sublime Media Connection, I guess I kinda got burnt out.

I've gotten that out of my system.

I hope.

So, back to our vacation. It was AMAZING, and so, so needed after everything we've gone through over the last few months. We left on a Thursday morning {after Nick got home from work, and we got packed for all 3 of us}, and headed into Boston,

with our final destination being Jackson, NH. Aidan did pretty well on the drive, although towards the end he got angry. We had to stop a few times so that he could get out and toddle about for a few. Our friends were already at the condo that we were renting for the weekend, so once we got there, we unpacked the truck and check the place out. O.M.Gosh! It was BEAUTIFUL.

Very near to where Nicks' brother got married last November. We've never been to NH in the summer, so we were excited to take a look around, and see what there was to do. After unwinding for a bit, and letting Aidan get some energy out, we headed out to get dinner. We ate at May Kelly's. We decided to sit out on the deck. It was amazing. The view was to die for.

The food was fantastic. Aidan behaved. And flirted with everyone. Friday was a rainy nasty day. After breakfast we hung around and watch some of the Olympics, and then headed out to Settlers Crossing for some retail therapy. We decided to make dinner at the condo on Friday night. It was late, and we were all soaked.

Saturday turned out to be a much better day, so we decided to go for a hike. There were 6 adults plus Aidan. Nick wore Aidan in our new Boba Carrier. *side note* This is by far the most comfy carrier we've ever had. Keep that in mind, review and giveaway coming soon* We headed for Eagle Mountain. We hiked Eagle mountain. All 7 of us. Including Aidan, being worn by daddy. Let me tell you, the view was spectacular, however, I was not even close to prepared for the type of hike it was. It was rocky and steep, and I ended up with 2 blisters. But, hey, the view was so worth it, and watching Nick wear Aidan and the 2 of them hike up this mountain like it was nothing, was so amazing.

After our hike, we found this really nice waterfall. There were TONS of people swimming (which is nuts, cause it was COLD). We decided to stop and I took some pictures. (Thank God I have a Lifeproof iPhone case!) We even put Aidan's feet in for a second. Then he kept putting them in...He really is a water baby!

After our hike, we went back to the condo so everyone could get showered and ready to go out to dinner. Not gonna like, Aidan had gotten up at 6ish that morning, I chose the last shower so I could sneak in a quick nap! While I was napping, Aidan helped us unpack a bit more...

That's his food tote...and he got the lid off by himself, and started emptying it. It was too funny to stop him!

We went to The Common Man for dinner Saturday night. We go every time we go to NH. It's SO good! We had a great meal and great conversation, and a certain little someone fell asleep about halfway through the adults having dinner.

Sunday morning was when we were leaving the condo. Everyone else was heading back, but Nick and I had decided to take advantage of his extra leave, and stay in NH another night. We all got up and packed and headed for breakfast. We found this really cute place not too far from the condo, or where we were going to be staying that night. The second floor of this place was a huge toy room for kids to play in while you waited to be seated. Aidan (and daddy) had a blast. And I got some great pictures!

We spent the rest of the day just the 3 of us, alittle shopping, relaxing, watching movies, and even ordering room service. It was great. We stayed at Adventure Suites in North Conway. We stayed there about 4 years ago when Nick came home from a deployment, and we just love it there. The room was AMAZING, and the staff was fantastic. They all loved Aidan. He even won their nightly prize wheel spin!

Monday, we had breakfast and relaxed for a bit before check out.

Then we packed up and headed back to RI. With a few traditional stops on the way. We took our time, and made a wonderful day out of it. Somehow I managed to not take one single picture the whole drive home...and it was a long one. We were all glad to be home, and Grandma and the kitties were glad to see us.

Now things have pretty much gotten back to normal. Nick's back at work, and we're back at blogging. So keep an eye out for all the great stuff we have coming up. We;ll have another installment of "Ask the Browns" coming soon. Oh, and did you like that baby carrier Nick was using on our hike? Then stay tuned. We're giving one away next week!

Fit Moms for life review/giveaway

So...full disclosure? I gained more then 50 pounds with Aidan. It's not something I"m proud of or happy about, but I have a happy health son, so, it's worth it. However, it also makes me unhappy, exhausted, and...did I mention unhappy? I hate my body. This coming from someone who was a competitive figure skater and never over a size 0 until college. Welcome to the first installment of 'Ask The Browns' Do you have questions for us? Leave them as a comment on this post, or email them to amyblogpr{at}gmail{dot}com. Our second installment of 'Ask The Browns' will be at the beginning of August, so get your questions in!

Q. What are your favorite foods?

Amy:
Sushi is my all time favorite. It was torture when I was pregnant and couldn't have any. Oh, and anything chocolate. I'm a trained chef, so there are very few things that I won't eat, but those are my favorites!

Nick:
That's tough, it really is. I love seafood (especially sushi, as of late). Up until a few years ago, the only 'ethnic' foods I had ever had (besides my heritage) were Italian or German. Now I really like Asian, Mexican, you name it, I like it. I've grown to like trying new foods.

Q. What are your food staples?

Amy:
Peanut butter, Nutella, chicken, tuna, pasta...anything that I can make fast. Aidan doesn't always allow for the production of a large meal. I'm also a fan of anything that I can hang onto without a plate and silverware, although lately, that means that Aidan is grabbing at it and trying to take it from me.

Nick:
Chicken, salad, and peanut butter with anything.

Q. Three years!Why you're still newlyweds! How do you keep the 'magic' going?

Amy:
It just kinda happens. We make sure that on nights that Nick's home, we have some quiet time to ourselves once Aidan goes to bed. We also try to have date nights as often as possible.

Nick:
I have no idea. I honestly don't.

Q. What are some of your hobbies? Are these hobbies things that you do together?

Amy:
Photography, blogging, sewing and crafting, hiking, canoeing, being outside. Traveling and exploring. Cooking and baking. I love to do alot of things, but getting the time is a challenge.

Nick:
Oi Vey. I love model airplanes, but I haven't done them in years. I love sports, the outdoors, fishing, hiking, mountain climbing, canoeing/kayaking, skiing, the art of brewing beer. Lately, I've been really into genealogy and looking up our family lineage.

Together we like to canoe and hike. We love to travel and visit historic places, like Gettysburg and Saratoga battlefield. We also both love photography, and really enjoy doing that together. We don't get a ton of time to do hobbies together lately, due to Nick's work schedule and military commitments, but we spend as much time as we can as a family, just being together.

Q. For Amy: How did you meet Nick?

Promise not to laugh? No, seriously...promise?? We met on Myspace. Just after Christmas in 2005. We had out first date on January 5, 2006, and that was it. I knew the first time I met him in person that I was going to marry him. Our first date was something like 7 hours long. We went out to dinner, and then literally drove around the entire state of RI. Till about 3 in the morning. I had to work at 5, he had to work at 7. That night changed my life in so many ways, I can't even explain.

Q. This one is for Nick: What is the best part about being a husband and a father?

That's another tough one. When I was a kid, I always wanted to get to this point. I dreamed of getting to this point. To be able to provide for my family, and be the best teacher for my children. Although it's been amazing so far, the best parts are still to come.

Q. Does your husband ever drive you bonkers?

Of course he does. And I drive him bonkers...that's what marriage is, lol. In all seriousness, yes, he drives me crazy sometimes, but I know that I drive him crazy sometimes too. I wouldn't change our lives for anything!

Q. What's your favorite cheese
Amy:
Brie, goat cheese, heck, I've never really met a cheese I didn't like.

Nick:
Behold...the power of that question. I pretty much have never met a cheese I didn't like. I've had the good fortune of having several French exchange students growing up, who would share their love of cheese with me. I can't remember all the wonderful cheeses I've tried, there are so many! Swiss, Brie, Limburger, extra sharp Cheddar (Wisconsin or Vermont), Munster, Asiago, provolone...Ok, you get the point.

Q. What's an average day like in the Brown house?

We have 2 kinds of days in the Brown house. Days that Nick is home, and days that Nick is at work. One is chaos, and the other is disaster. No, in all reality, our days vary so much depending on whether Nick is home or not. Here's a run down:

Nick's home: This usually means that I'm coming home from work around 8-8:30am. Depending on the night that Aidan has had, I'll watch him while Amy and Mom (my mother-in-law) catch some sleep. Once they are up, I try to catch up on chores, or whatever else needs to be done. In the evening, I take turns with Amy cooking dinner. Then we all chill and watch TV before I put Aidan to bed.

Nick's at work: On days that Nick works, he is up and out the door by 6:30am. If I'm really lucky, Aidan is still asleep. If I'm really unlucky, he's been up for hours by then. I get up with Aidan in the morning, get him a bottle, and put him in his playpen to get some of the energy out. Depending on the type of night we've had, Mom and I take turns with him, one of us will watch him, while the other takes a quick nap. Lately, he's been getting up between 3 and 4am, so naps are important to all of us. We play, watch some PBS kids shows, and depending on the day, run errands, or just relax. Regardless if Nick is home or not, Aidan gets a night time bottle, and heads to bed around 8-8:30. After he's down is when I do most of my social media, and blogging.

Summer water safety

Now that summer is in full swing, I think it's time to take a look at water safety. I've heard so many stories on the news about tragic drownings of young children in our area. There are a number of things that you can do to protect your little ones in and out of the pool this summer; if you have a pool, make sure your kids know how to swim. It's never too early to put them in swim lessons. Aidan will be 9 months old on Thursday, and we start swim lessons tomorrow. We have a pool in our back yard, and while Nick and I are good swimmers, we also want Aidan to learn to swim as early as possible.

Here are some other tips and ideas for keeping your kids safe this summer!

Pools and spas will be used more frequently as warmer weather arrives. Learn how to create safer pool and spa environments for children and what you can do to make your home pool or spa safer.


	Put up a fence that is at least 4 feet high and is around all sides of the pool or spa. The fence should have a locking gate that closes and latches by itself.
	Use door, gate and pool alarms.
	Cover and lock pools and spas when you are not using them.
	Remove or lock ladders to above ground pools and spas.
	Use approved anti-entrapment drain covers and back up devices.

	Always watch children when they are in or near water.
	When you are watching children, don’t be distracted by phone calls, text messages, reading or talking to others.
	Watch children even if they know how to swim.
	Children who can’t swim well or can’t swim at all should be within your reach and wear life jackets.
	Keep a phone near you – use it only to call for help if there is an emergency.
	If a child is missing, check the water first.

	Learn how to swim – both children and adults should know how to swim.
	Learn how to correctly choose and use U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets.
	Learn how to use rescue equipment.
	Learn adult and infant CPR.
	Teach children never to swim alone.
	Teach children not to play or swim near pool or spa drains.

	Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children.
	Most children were being watched by an adult just before they drowned.
	Approximately 400 children age 14 and younger drown in pools and spas each year (CPSC).
	Home swimming pools are the most common place for a child younger than age 5 to drown.

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #73

On the first Friday of every month, Wife of a Sailor does a fill-in for milspouse bloggers. This is the first time I've done it. I'm excited!

1. What's the one thing in the past month you would have changed? If I had a choice to change anything, it would be the car accident that totaled Nick's truck. That combined with everything else has just been so stressful.

2. What was your favorite thing that happened in June? Watching Aidan grow. Watching him start to walk and learn new things. He's started signing more, and using more words. He's so interactive with us and his toys now, it's great! He also had his first experience in our pool!

3. What did you do to celebrate Independence Day? In all honesty, we didn't really do much. Aidan was up all night the night before, so Mom and I took turns sleeping, while Nick watched Aidan. When everyone was awake, we watched the first part of Gettysburg. We also reminisced about the road trip we were on this time last year, at Gettysburg for the 4th...and that I was 6 months pregnant, lol.

4. When you PCS, what items do you take with you and not let the movers pack (and if you do a DITY, what do you take with you and not box up)? Since we're Air National Guard, we've never PCS'd. We probably never will.

5. What are you looking forward to in July? I'm looking forward to starting parent and child swim lessons with Aidan next week. I'm also looking forward to finally getting Nick's new truck so we're no longer a 1 car family. At the end of the month, I'm looking forward to our little mini vacation to where I grew up in New York.

Saying Goodbye to The Green Monstah

As you may have read in our post about keeping your focus on your kids during hard times, Nick was in a car accident a few weeks ago; he was rear ended while waiting in traffic on his way to work at the RI Air National Guard Air Show and Open House. At first we thought the damage to the truck was minor. He drove it about a mile after the crash to the fire station. Once he got it there and really got a good look at it, we started to get worried that it was going to be totaled. The frame was bent on both sides of the bed, the bed was buckled, and cracked; there was damage to the cab. It didn't look good.

Let me explain this truck to you. This truck, The Green Monstah (after the wall at Fenway Park) was Nick's dream truck. He literally took 2 years building it over and over online. After his last deployment in 08, we were finally in a position to get it. He built it again online, and printed it out. Armed with what he had dreamed of for years, we began going to dealers to find it. It took some haggling and arguing, but we finally found the truck. It had to be shipped to our dealer from Maine, but we had it.

We bought the truck in March of '09, and Nick has been kinda OCD about taking care of it ever since. He'd spend hours on the weekend washing, waxing and detailing it, inside and out. And then the accident happened. He was devastated (besides being hurt from the crash itself).

On Tuesday we found out that the truck was indeed totaled. Nick was devastated. We kinda knew that it was going to be, but he was still holding on to that little bit of hope that it wasn't as bad as we thought. Tuesday we took everything out of and off of the truck in preparation for the insurance company to come get it from the body shop. It was really sad. I made Nick pose for one last picture with The Green Monstah.

The truck looks PERFECT from the front, you'd never know how much damage there is looking at it this way. We are both heart broken that we lost the truck.

Now we are beginning the process of getting a new truck. I think it's going to take longer then we planned, but I want Nick to have exactly what he wants, since he lost his love through no fault of his own. I know how much that truck meant to him, and I want him to have that same love of the new truck.

8 Months and 2 Weeks

Aidan Micah is 8 months, 2 weeks, and 4 days old. It's hard to believe that this time last year he was kicking away at my ribs and bladder; It's even harder to believe that 8 and a half months ago, I was holding him for the first time. Now, I look at him, and he's cruising around in circles in his pack n play, and laughing, jumping and starting to talk. Where did my little baby go? And where is this toddler going to take us? It's very obvious that in our family, Aidan is in charge. Everyone loves him, and can't get enough. This morning, Grandma was watching him while Nick and I got some things done before we headed out truck shopping for the day. {ok, I admit that what I was really doing was taking a nap, but that's not the point ;) } When I got up and went into the living room, there was Grandma (my mom) with Aidan sleeping in her lap. There was a smile as big as the sun and a glow about Grandma..she loves her little boy, and can't get enough of him. Now, let's get on to the milestones, shall we?

At 8 months old, Aidan...

Says mama and dada when he wants one of us.

Laughs and giggles like crazy while playing peek a boo, or "where's Aidan".

Can finally get from laying down to sitting up, and back again.

Can pull himself up to standing.

Walks around in circles {over his toys most of the time} in his pack n play

Watches his fur brother and sister when they are in his sight line.

Squeals in delight when his fur brother or sister comes near him.

Is doing really well at feeding himself things like hot dogs, Cheerios, goldfish crackers, pretty much anything you put in front of him

Officially has 4 teeth (as of yesterday!) 2 top and 2 bottom.

Crawls at the speed of light with his belly up off the floor.

Climbs the couch, chair or person that is near him to get to what he wants.

CAN hold a sippy cup, although he's pretty stubborn, and doesn't always like to hold it.

Signs 'milk' when wants his bottle.

Is starting to put himself down for naps in his pack n play (YAY!!)

Love to ride in the car and go for adventures.

Flirts with EVERYONE.

(today when we went out to lunch, he grabbed our waitress by the fingers....TWICE)

Babbles and babbles all day long.

Loves Curious George and The Cat In the Hat Knows A Lot About That on PBS.

I know that there is more that I'm missing, but that's a pretty good list. Now for some pictures. If you follow us on FaceBook or Instagram, then you see a lot of Aidan, but he's so cute, who couldn't use a little more of him ;)

We love that little boy with all our hearts. He's the center of our world.

Ask the Brown's {date Change!}

So, I've been thinking, y'all don't really know a TON about us. I give you bits and pieces of our life here and there, but for the most part, I don't really share a lot. That makes me sad. I want to share our lives with you. That's the reason that I started this blog. To share, and connect, and find others like us. While I have found others like us, I haven't really connected with more then a handful of people. I want to connect more, I want to build lasting friendships with people around the world. I want others like us to know that we've been there and come out on the other side.

That being said, after speaking to Nick, we've decided to open ourselves up to you in the form of an "ask the Brown's" type area on the blog. Now, this isn't just me. Nick will also be answering questions, so be sure to ask him some, too! Twice a month we will answer your questions.
