Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic vs. Brendan Schaub

Cro Cop was at one time was one of the most feared men in MMA. He comes into this fight off a loss from Frank Mir at UFC 119. Brendan Schaub, who made a name for himself on The Ultimate Fighter season 10, is an up and coming heavyweight. He won his last fight against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 121. Cro Cop has hinted that if he loses this fight it may be his last. Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampmann breaks a usual pattern in UFC matchmaking: winners vs. winners, and losers vs. losers.

Sanchez (22-4 MMA, 11-4 UFC) has just experienced a significant turnaround in his six-year octagon career. Kampmann (17-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC), meanwhile, is coming off a significant loss in his half-decade with the UFC.

Although they come from opposite ends of the career spectrum, they share a desire to redeem themselves from past mistakes, and a meeting Thursday at UFC on Versus 3 is another step in that direction.

UFC on Versus 3 takes place at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky., and Sanchez vs. Kampmann headlines the main card, which airs live on Versus. Two preliminary-card fights also stream on Facebook.

Kampmann's need to correct the past is a little more immediate than his foe. He suffered a split-decision loss to Jake Shields this past October at UFC 121 in a fight billed as a No. 1 contender's fight for the former Strikeforce champion. The stakes, though, were not necessarily there for Kampmann. In a back-and-forth battle, jiu-jitsu black belt Shields outgrappled Kampmann, whose striking skills seemed to be on hiatus that night.

"Training for the fight was pretty good, and I knew his game is to get people down and kind of lay on them," Kampmann said. "So I was prepared for it. I just made some bad decisions in the fight.

"Sometimes in the heat of the moment, you make mistakes. I was a little bit too tentative in the standup. I was worried too much about the takedown, and when I was on top on the ground, I was trying too hard to submit him, and I gave up top position."

Shields now is slated to take on welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129. Could that have been Kampmann? Maybe, and maybe not. But he doesn't want to give away any more fights. That means he's got to stay calm during Thursday's fight and make no mistakes.

After dominating his early competition, Kampmann has stumbled in high-profile bouts against Nate Marquardt, Paul Daley and Shields while racking up critical wins over Thales Leites, Carlos Condit and Paulo Thiago.

He's considered an underdog against Sanchez, but that doesn't bother him. He's on a mission to get back to the top.

"I don't think the odds matter so much," Kampmann said. "It's still a fight. Diego seems like a very motivated person, and those guys are tough to fight. He always brings it, and I admire his tenacity in the cage. So I'm definitely expecting a tough fight, but that's what I want."

Sanchez, meanwhile, wants to continue his road to redemption. He most recently reversed a two-fight skid with a unanimous-decision win over Thiago this past October at UFC 121. Considering how close he came to the razor's edge with back-to-back losses that began with a loss to then-lightweight champion B.J. Penn, his turnaround is all the more meaningful.

"I hit rock bottom after the B.J. Penn fight," Sanchez said. "I really did. I blew through all my money. I made some very bad decisions. I had this scam artist scam me real bad. I was in debt (for) over $175,000. I had to come back home. I needed my family's love. I just was humbled."

The lessons didn't end there. In his very next fight, Sanchez was outpointed by John Hathaway at UFC 114. He slid further down the rankings. He now knows he shouldn't have been there in the first place.

"I was going to the bar and drinking beer after training," Sanchez said. "I didn't even take him seriously at all. I thought, 'I'm going to go in there and knock this guy out. I'm taking him down.' In the first round, I got hit with a knee in the face real hard, and I couldn't recover from it. I shouldn't have been in the ring for that fight, period."

Sanchez moved back home five weeks before his fight against Thiago and rejoined Greg Jackson, with whom he'd trained for much of his career before moving to San Diego. He gave up partying, and he rededicated himself to God.

Along the way, he decided to give up the nickname that had defined him as a young competitor: "The Nightmare." Now, he's simply Diego Sanchez.

"'The Nightmare' is something that's negative, and kind of evil, and I don't want to represent that," he said. "I want to represent positivity, and I want to represent good.

"I look back on my whole career. I'm like, 'The Nightmare?' 'The Nightmare' was myself. I was my own nightmare. All the times that I fell off track and got into drinking and smoking weed, the things that brought my down. That was my nightmare. I said, 'You know what? I've grown up.' I've let that name go, and I just want to be Diego Sanchez. I don't even need a nickname."

Now, his new motto is "earn it."

"I want to go into every fight with a mindset that I already earned this 'W,'" Sanchez said. "It's mine, and I'm going to take it. It doesn't matter what my opponent has done. I know that I've done everything possible in my ability to get the 'W.'"

In other main-card action, former collegiate wrestling standouts Mark Munoz (9-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and C.B. Dollaway (11-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) meet in a middleweight bout. After an initial rough spot, Dollaway has racked up three consecutive wins inside the octagon, including a victory over Joe Doerksen at UFC 119 that won him "Submission of the Night" honors. Munoz, meanwhile, is coming off a decision win over fellow collegiate wrestler Aaron Simpson that helped him rebound from a disappointing decision loss to Yushin Okami this past August.

Additionally, American Top Team's Alessio Sakara (15-7 MMA, 6-4 UFC) returns to action after a stomach flu forced him to withdraw from a fight with Jorge Rivera at UFC 122 just hours before showtime. He meets middleweight newcomer Chris Weidman (4-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who steps in for an injured Rafael Natal. Weidman trains with former welterweight champion Matt Serra and trainer Ray Longo and has a fraction of the experience of his Italian opponent.

Also, former WEC bantamweight champion Brian Bowles (8-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) makes his UFC debut after a string of injuries put him on the bench for a year. He meets Greg Jackson pupil Damacio Page (12-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in a rematch from an August 2008 bout at WEC 35, which Bowles won by first-round submission.

After a hiatus from any major mixed martial arts action over the holiday break, the top two promotions in the world, the UFC and Strikeforce, will go head to head this weekend on Saturday. The UFC will air The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale with a main event showdown between Stephan Bonnar and Igor Pokrajac while Strikeforce will promote a card featuring Dan Henderson vs. Renato Sobral, Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Lindland, Paul Daley vs. Scott Smith, and Antonio Silva vs. Mike Kyle.

While the disparity in talent is obvious between the two events, the UFC brand will likely garner more interest along with it being a free event on Spike TV. In any case, Strikeforce's match-ups certainly have more relevance within their own divisional rankings, and some of these bouts may have title implications.

The first match-up of the evening that we'll scrutinize is a heavyweight contest pitting Brazilian "Bigfoot" Antonio Silva (14-2, 1-1 SF) as he battles surging UFC, WEC, and Strikeforce veteran Mike Kyle (18-7-1-1, 2-2-1 SF). Silva enters the contest after upsetting Andrei Arlovski back in May at Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery, but his debut with the promotion saw him drop an unanimous decision loss to Fabricio Werdum in November of last year.

Kyle has been the much busier fighter as he's fought five times this year, amassing a 4-0-1 record in those bouts with only one decision, a split decision victory over King of the Cage champion Tony Lopez. Those fights followed a stint with Strikeforce in 2009 in which he upset rising prospect and current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Rafael Cavalcante and lost via submission at the hands of Fabricio Werdum.

While most fans would probably give Kyle a glimmer of hope against the massive size advantage that Antonio Silva holds in this showdown, Kyle has proven that his power can put opponents on ice. Kyle doesn't present the most technical striking game by any means, but mixed martial arts is a sport in which knockout power can be the ultimate x-factor. Kyle has that unpredictable attribute in his arsenal, and it will likely be his means to ending Silva's run to the top.

It was all about Sheamus on the last Raw. The WWE Champ was placed on a throne and given the ability to choose his opponent for Night of Champions. Various Superstars "auditioned" for the Irishman, but in the end, Sheamus made an unlikely choice. The Celtic Warrior chose to defend his title against Zack Ryder, not on pay-per-view, but on Raw. A grateful Ryder thanked Sheamus for the opportunity before having his face kicked in and getting pinned inside of a mere 11 seconds. After the match, Wade Barrett informed Sheamus that at Night of Champions, he would invoke the title opportunity he earned after winning season one of WWE NXT. Then the Raw GM stepped it up even further, announcing that the match would be a Six Pack Challenge, which would also include Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, Edge and John Cena.

Sheamus' throne must have been really comfy. After all, Sheamus, who has a penchant for involving himself where he doesn’t belong, actually stayed out of the Triple Threat Match between Randy Orton, John Morrison and Ted DiBiase. The triumvirate of Superstars competed for the potential opportunity to be chosen by the Irishman to battle him in a title match at Night of Champions. During the bout, Sheamus actually exited to deliberate before announcing who he would face in four weeks. When the carnage was complete, it was The Viper who had snaked past his competition to secure the win.

Also, The Miz looked to exact a little revenge on John Cena. When asked about The Miz’s attack on Daniel Bryan last week, John Cena called it “petty and classless.” Needless to say, the "Awesome" Superstar was not amused. Mr. Money in the Bank more than held his own, but once Cena found his footing, Miz had to find an escape hatch and flee the ring. Unfortunately for Miz, Daniel Bryan appeared on the scene and was more than happy to “escort” him back to the ring. After tossing the U.S. Champion back inside, where Cena administered an Attitude Adjustment, Daniel Bryan locked a submission hold onto his nemesis. So intense was the hold that it required five referees to finally break it.

CHICAGO, Ill. (August 11, 2010) - Bellator Fighting Championships officially announced today the signing of New York native Kenny "The Tooth Fairy" Foster to its fast growing list of up-and-coming fighters. Foster joins the promotion with an impressive 7-2 professional record, including a six fight win streak which he compiled from July 2009 to March 2010.

After a three-year 149 lbs. wrestling career at Carson Newman College, Foster found that he still had a hunger for competition. He filled that void by competing in tough man competitions but was eventually drawn to MMA when UFC fighter Clay Guida started training at his wrestling gym.

After a successful amateur career in which he held a regional championship lightweight belt, Foster decided to begin training fulltime. The 25 year old relocated from Georgia back to his New York roots to train with Team Bomb Squad.

"Kenny Foster has a great competitive spirit mixed with powerful wrestling skills and ever evolving striking skills which makes it very hard to count him out of match-ups at featherweight," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney.

Star-divide

Although Foster has no problem drawing from his prior wrestling experience to win fights, he admittedly does not like to be categorized as a wrestler.

"I hate to even put it out there, but I'm a striker. Categorizing me as a ground fighter isn't a fair assumption at all. All of my submission victories for my past 5 or 6 fights have come after I dropped my opponent with strikes," said Foster. "Once I drop someone my wrestling instincts kick in and I just look for the finish."

Whichever discipline Foster decides to use, it's clear that he is going to "bring it" in his upcoming fights with Bellator.

"I feel like all the years I've been doing this have been building up to this point," said Foster. "I feel like when I signed the contract today, it was the biggest blessing of my life. Today is the first time I truly felt like a professional. Signing a contract with an amazing organization like Bellator and now my trainer is talking about organizing my fight camp; I feel like I'm really getting the treatment now."

Although Foster competed at lightweight the entirety of his amateur career and for his first professional fight, he plans to fight in the featherweight division for Bellator.

The Oakland Raiders, an iconic NFL franchise, are known for many things including the famous saying, “Real men wear black.” This Saturday night the phrase will be modified to include the color “blue”, as a group of “real men” will take to the Octagon in Oakland’s Oracle Arena and risk exiting the eight-sided structure bruised and battered. ”UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen” is packed with talent and features a number of intriguing match-ups, including two bouts that will determine top divisional contenders (Jon Fitch’s rematch with Thiago Alves, Junior dos Santos’ clash with Roy Nelson), Ricardo Almeida attempting to avenge his Gracie-peers’ losing performances against Matt Hughes, and a headlining title-fight between Anderson Silva and the new king of trash-talking, Chael Sonnen.

Before I get into the actual “pick em” part of this article let me preclude the breakdown of bouts by saying one of the things about Mixed Martial Arts I’ve always loved is its unpredictable nature. I’ll do my best to steer you in the right direction with a little insight/opinion included in the deal, but readers would be wise to avoid laying down money on my attempts to glimpse into the future. Beyond that, please don’t hesitate to share your own thoughts on any or all of the scheduled fights in the “Comments” section below, and let’s get this show on the road…

Ben Saunders vs. Dennis Hallman

This is a great bout to open up the show with, though I’m not exactly sure why it received lower billing than a few of the other pairings on the card given the circumstances surrounding the match-up. Saunders may have lost two of his last three fights, but both defeats came to highly-respected, experienced opponents (Jon Fitch and Mike Swick) with a brutal first-round knockout of veteran Marcus Davis sandwiched between. Given his win over Davis, and the seven straight he’d earned prior to facing Swick, Saunders has shown a lot of potential. He has an exciting, aggressive style, Ultimate Fighter experience, and a personality to match Forrest Griffin’s. Truly, at age 27, he’s a welterweight the UFC should be promoting rather than using as a curtain-jerker.

Hallman also deserves more respect given his 13-year tenure in the sport and the fact he’s won five of his last six fights. He’s won 42 fights and has submitted a mind-boggling 33 opponents courtesy of his top notch grappling skills. However, it seems he’s an ideal adversary for Saunders in that he’s been knocked out a number of times in his career (including his last bout) and “Killa B” has the ability to strike from a variety of angles. He’s good with kicks, knees, punches, and in the clinch as well. Saunders also has a five-inch height advantage, meaning his size should make it more difficult for Hallman to score submission-friendly takedowns while also allowing the ATT product to land effective shots from the outside. As such, I think Saunders will eventually catch Hallman on the chin, or maybe even in a clinch, until the ref calls for the stoppage.

Winner – Ben Saunders via TKO Round 2

Tim Boetsch vs. Todd Brown

I’m glad to see Boetsch get a call back to the UFC after going 2-2 during his first run, then stringing together three finish-based wins in smaller organizations thereafter. It’s a good example of why any fighter, or any fans of an affected individual, shouldn’t give up hope whenever a contractual release takes place. Brown is making his Octagon debut and has been out of action since November 2009, so he’s obviously a major underdog, but he’s 11-1 overall and has seven wins in his last eight fights (with the other bout being a “No Contest”) so it’s not as though he’s hopeless. That being said, I do think Boetsch’s power will prove to be too much, and if he isn’t able to pound out a win from the top he’ll at least do enough to win a decision.

Winner – Tim Boetsch via Decision

Stefan Struve vs. Christian Morecraft

This is an important fight for Struve who is coming off a loss to Roy Nelson and a decision win over journeyman Paul Buentello. Losing to Morecraft, who will be making his UFC debut, could signal a pink-slip for the 6’11 heavyweight and as such it’s crucial he comes away with a victory. Morecraft is undefeated and finished all six of his opponents. He apparently has submission skills and knockout power, so it should be interesting to see how Struve approaches him. Most of his wins have been the result of tapping opponents out so it seems he’s likely to try and grapple with Morecraft rather than stand and exchange strikes. His long limbs are ideal for locking in chokes, as evident by twelve of his fourteen submissions involving those of the triangle and rear-naked variety, so I suspect that if Struve wins it will be by one of those two techniques. However, I’m going with Morecraft for the win because he appears to have a bit of jiujitsu in his arsenal and definitely the power to floor Struve. The towering Dutchman has been dropped before and owes three of his four losses to TKOs. I think Morecraft will be able to successfully defend Struve’s attempts to submit him and eventually land enough shots, whether standing or from top position, to put him away for good.

Winner – Christian Morecraft via TKO Round 2

Johny Hendricks vs. Charlie Brenneman

This should be a fairly evenly matched fight with Hendricks having an obvious edge in wrestling as indicated by his back-to-back national championships at Oklahoma State. Both men seem to have similar styles, opting to stand or work ground-and-pound as opposed to attacking with submissions, as well as a similar level of experience. I think Hendricks will dictate the pace of the fight, as well as where most of the action takes place, but I don’t think he’ll be able to finish “The Spaniard” off who has proven himself to be a tough draw in the past. He’s 11-1 with his only loss coming by way of decision to John “Doomsday” Howard and riding a seven-fight win streak since, plus he beat Jason High in his previous bout who is himself a solid grappler. Look for Brenneman to hang with Hendricks and offer him a significant test but don’t expect him to win.

Winner – Johny Hendricks via Decision

Phil Davis vs. Rodney Wallace

Wallace is in a do-or-die situation at UFC 117, as he’s lost back-to-back bouts in the Octagon and has 2/3 of his total wins by way of decision (meaning his style is not necessarily the type to have average fans clamoring for more). And, unfortunately, “Sho Nuff” is going to essentially need to channel “the glow” on Saturday night to have a legitimate chance because Davis is an incredibly tough draw, especially for someone in his position. “Mr. Wonderful” is a four-time All-American, championship-winning wrestler who has done an excellent job making the transition into Mixed Martial Arts. He’s athletic, has no problem procuring submissions, and can knock opponents out as well. Basically, Wallace needs to throw caution to the win and let his hands fly if he has any real hope of beating Davis because he’s not going to out-work him on the mat or ease his way into any takedowns. However, I don’t think he’ll approach Davis as recklessly as that would require, and in the end it won’t take the former Nittany Lion long to pounce, take Wallace down, and either pound him out or work him into position for a fight-ending choke.

Winner – Phil Davis via Submission Round 2

Dustin Hazelett vs. Rick Story

This match-up has “Fight of the Night” potential written all over it. Story and Hazelett are both well-rounded competitors with a lot of heart who have shown gradual improvement on a per-fight basis. Hazelett is by far the better submission-grappler between the two, having tapped out nine of the twelve opponents he’s beaten, but he’s also shown a past willingness to stand and exchange on his feet as well. Story may not have Hazelett’s jiujitsu weaponry but he’s a solid wrestler with decent power who isn’t a slouch on the ground either. “McLovin” has been knocked out a few times in his career, so it’s possible Story could play the role of a liquor-store robber by landing a shot and dropping him, but I tend to believe it’s Hazelett who will come away with a hard-fought win after catching a triangle or armbar from the bottom.

Winner – Dustin Hazelett via Submission Round 3

Junior dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson

I see a lot of potential for an upset in this bout based on how the Nelson and Dos Santos compare to each other. As I said in this week’s Grappling with Issues, “The only time “Big Country” has ever been knocked out in his career was to Andrei Arlovski, and it still took a few flush punches after a lot of previous damage to drop him. Dos Santos may be more aggressive than Arlovski, but he’s not as technically sound from what I’ve seen, and I think Nelson’s striking may just be good enough to defend, dish out a little bit of damage (with jabs for example), and open up takedown opportunities. He also has knockout power so a clean shot to Dos Santos’ chin could definitely result in an end to the fight.

Additionally, if the Buddha-bellied big-man gets on top of “Cigano” it could make for some very tense moments in the Brazilian’s corner. Nelson’s jiujitsu is solid and he knows how to use his physique to his advantage when it comes to controlling from the top. It will be very interesting to see how Dos Santos responds if put that position since he’s generally faced strikers in the Octagon thus far, with a flabby Fabricio Werdum being the lone exception, and with his primary method of attack involving stand-up.”

The fabric of the squad assembled to combat The Nexus continued to fray. After overhearing Edge complain about his inclusion in the group, The Great Khali challenged his potential teammate to a match. During the bout, The Nexus sauntered to the ring, prompting The Ultimate Opportunist to flee the squared circle. While Khali may have won by count-out, his situation looked precarious when The Nexus surrounded him. Rather than pummel The Punjabi Playboy, though, the group allowed him to go free.

Randy Orton def. Jey Uso; The Miz attempted to cash in Money in the Bank contract (PHOTOS | WATCH)
For Jey Uso, facing and defeating Randy Orton would have propelled him near the top of the WWE totem pole. The Viper, however, wasn’t about to offer up his scalp so easily. Instead, Orton made convincing work of Uso as his brother Jimmy and Tamina looked on. After the victory, Orton dared WWE Champion Sheamus, who was also observing at ringside, to tangle with him.

Before the two could engage, Jimmy attacked Orton. Sensing an opportunity, the Irishman tried to kick his SummerSlam foe, but his errant boot ended up leveling Jimmy instead. At that point, The Viper deftly flattened The Celtic Warrior with an RKO.

The scent of vulnerability lured out United States Champion The Miz, who’s been bird-dogging Sheamus ever since capturing the Money in the Bank briefcase. Before Miz could cash in the briefcase, though, Orton slipped into the ring and also dropped Mr. Money in the Bank with an RKO.

Chris Jericho confronted John Cena; Raw GM made several announcements (PHOTOS)
Chris Jericho bickering was probably inevitable. Last week, John Cena revealed that he would team up with Jericho, Edge, John Morrison, R-Truth, The Great Khali & WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart to battle The Nexus at SummerSlam. This week, Jericho started in with the whining. The self-important Superstar interrupted Cena and began protesting that he should be appointed head of the assembled squad. Mercifully, Cena halted the rant by knocking the microphone from Mr. Vocabulary’s hand.

Before tensions could bubble over, however, Raw’s anonymous General Manager interrupted. Through announcer Michael Cole, the mystery GM put forth three important declarations. First, the SummerSlam battle between Team WWE and The Nexus would now be a 7-on-7 Elimination Match. Secondly, The Nexus would put their unity to the test in the night’s main event, in which they face select members of the Raw roster in just such a bout. And lastly, Cena and Jericho would test their cohesion in a tag team match against two Raw Superstars.
