We all know about phone Apps. Millions of people around the world are threatening to throw their phone against the wall in anger as that last green pig on Angry Birds smirks at them through the screen. And we all know that the number of people who download and use apps every day is growing all of the time.

Step in Lashai Ben Salmi who sees apps as a way to make a change for those who are being bullied. The 11-year-old from London has experienced bullying first-hand, and even moved schools because it was getting so severe. Her confidence fell while being bullied, but Lashai found a new confidence through teaming up with her 7 year old brother and taking on projects. These included “My Journey: Giving youth several reasons to (((SMILE)))”, co-authoring “Kidz that DREAM BIG!”, and co-creating “Put the RED CARD up to bullying”. Lashai also set up and ran her own short story competition in year 6 which involved her approaching local businesses to offer prizes like book vouchers. Through her time working with others on these projects she found that plenty of people were going through similar things she went through when being bullied, which encouraged her to think of ways they could be helped.

Knowing that young people use smart phones and mobiles for communication every day she saw an opportunity to use this technology to offer those being bullied some advice, information, and a place where they feel less isolated by their situation. And since she knows the feeling of isolation that comes with being bullied, she thinks it could be exactly what someone else who is being bullied needs.

She has since won a Young Citizen Award and a Black Youth Achievements Award for her work. The app called “RED CARD IT!” is still in production but expected to be released in the next few months. Keep your eyes peeled!

Lashai was the youngest speaker at the ClearlySo conference last year.

People are cycling with satchels, trailers, loaded panniers or rickshaws as “a friendly, green alternative to transport in the city of Bristol”. This is the work of Sam Harris who has set up Pedal Power Transport, a network of environmentally-friendly ways of delivering things (and people!) around the city.

Sam is a student studying Biological Sciences in Bristol, and after seeing the amount of congestion and traffic around his city he thought he could start a cheaper, pollution-free delivery service that could employ the number of students that are already cycling around the city on a daily basis.

Since launching, the company has gained many repeat customers (both businesses and individuals) and is set for growth. They have regular delivery drivers and have moved beyond deliveries to now offer an alternative taxi service letting you travel around Bristol by rickshaw or even hire a private chauffeured service for a wedding! They are planning a cheaper recycling service for businesses to encourage more recycling, adding to its mission to make Bristol a greener city.

Everyone that delivers for Pedal Power is paid and the company is gaining (and still looking for) more delivery contracts. So it is very much a functioning business that has a goal to make Bristol and the world a greener place. They are still welcoming volunteers for internships in certain parts of the business.

Sam intends to keep running the business alongside his studies. He will then decide what’s next for him and Pedal Power after graduating but he is certain that it will keep going with or without him.

Sam said that all of the Live UnLtd people he was in contact with were “really nice people” and that he’d “really recommend them to anyone.”

Parkour and free-running have changed from being pretty unknown to being much more familiar things to see on TV, films or around city streets over the past few years. But even though it’s more recognisable, Bradley Richardson, who set up Kinetics Wales found plenty of obstacles along the way when starting his Parkour teaching business.

At the start the group realised it would be a smart move to work closely with the local police when doing Parkour in the streets. They were working with young people who sometimes had troubled or criminal backgrounds and were offering a hobby or sport to participate in, so choosing to work with the police at the same time helped them establish themselves as a part of the community.

When they started to run regular classes (both indoor and outdoor) they realised that they needed to get hold of the right kind of insurance to run things properly. Backing and support from Live UnLtd helped them sort out the right kind of insurance to overcome this obstacle.

As well as teaching regular classes, Kinetics Wales has gone on to travel around the UK offering free Parkour workshops to communities without access to professional tuition. They have also set up the Kinetics Wales Academy and are teaching after-school classes in various places. They even had the opportunity to perform and provide workshops at Beach Break Live last year.

For now Bradley sees Kinetics Wales’ future as being yet more classes and more performances in yet more places.

“A big thanks to Amanda and the Live UnLtd team for the love and support and helping it happen.”

The Womb Room is a support and information service aimed at young women experiencing fertility problems and medical conditions specific to females. It also promotes awareness about making good choices about reproductive health.

When Saschan had surgery to remove her right ovary and fallopian tube after several months of problems, she noticed that there wasn’t enough support or information for young women in her position. That’s why Saschan decided to set up The Womb Room.

She wanted to help other young women and educate them about making the right choices, knowing the symptoms of these medical conditions, and offering advice on what they should consider doing next if they have concerns.

The Womb Room hosts workshops aiming to find out how much knowledge school children have of female reproductive health issues, and Saschan intends to use this information to propose ways that more education can be provided in schools. The aim is to get more information about these issues onto the national curriculum.

Saschan hopes that the project will have helped over 2,000 young women during its first year.

Saschan said: “The support I’ve received from the Live UnLtd team has helped me to network and work with many influential people, which has led onto some amazing opportunities”

Sam is 16, he is a keen skier, and he has cerebral palsy. His interest in skiing arrived a few years back when a scheme at his local council called Aiming High for Disabled Children was organising a skiing trip to the Alps for disabled young people. The trip was organised after a meeting with a group of young people pointed out that skiing breaks were being organised in many schools, but disabled pupils were often being left out of them.

Keen to try his hand at skiing, Sam went to taster sessions on dry practice slopes in Sunderland and a Snow Dome in Castleford before going on his trip to the Alps, and he took to the sport almost immediately. Sam, like many disabled young people, was often told he couldn’t do things because of his disability, but Sam was now skiing, and he was enjoying it.

After his trip he was now hooked on skiing, and he wanted to share his love of the sport. Encouraged by staff from Sunderland Adaptive Snowsports, Sam applied for support from Live UnLtd and got together with friends Terrie and Dan to set up their own group, JLS Adaptive Snowsports. Their goal was to offer skiing taster sessions to other young disabled people. His project gave these young people a chance to participate in sport, keep active and share fun and challenging experiences.

It also gave Sam a role and responsibility that he hadn’t experienced before, and now he is determined to continue to develop as a mentor and skiing instructor. He plans to get the qualifications needed to teach skiing to more people and he takes just about every chance he can to get on the slopes.

“Kinetics Wales – The world is your playground”

We talked to Bradley Richardson to find out how he used a cash award and support from Live UnLtd to grow his parkour teaching business, Kinetics Wales.

What started out as training in the streets turned into parkour lessons. Live UnLtd provided £1,700 and the support needed to help establish the business.

Bradley says, “Live Unltd are amazing support, I’d recommend everyone to go for them, ’cause they’ve helped me with everything along the way.”
