Understoodit is a new app that gives students the chance to let their teacher or lecturer know when they’re confused about something without having to raise their hand in front of everyone. The teacher is alerted that someone is confused by something that’s being talked about and can then try and make things clearer. Read the full story here.

Despite the unstable economy, unemployment fell by 45,000 in the previous quarter of the year with 29.3 million people aged 16 and over in employment. And the number of unemployed 16-24 year olds has dropped by 17,000.

This increase could be down to the high number of people taking on part-time jobs because they can’t find full-time work – a record high of 1.4 million people are now working part-time. And there is also a record high of 4.1 million people who are registered as self-employed.

And the figures also show that the number of people who have been unemployed for longer than a year has increased by 27,000.

Can an App convince Londoners to cycle and walk to work? An app that gives people options for their journey and rewards them with discounts on products has launched. They’re hoping people will start changing the way they make their usual journeys to be more environmentally friendly. Read the full story here.

All this week there have been people living #belowtheline by challenging themselves to live off just £1 (or $1.50 in the USA) per day on food for a working week. “The intention is to increase awareness that will drive action to support poverty,” Michael Trainer, U.S. country director for the Global Poverty Project said. At the beginning of 2012, unemployment amongst young people rose to 20.4%. More than 1 in 5 are out of work and 53% feel they are not encouraged to be entrepreneurial at school.

UnLtd is sharing its skills and knowledge through the Live UnLtd team who will be working alongside the six selected Colleges. It aims to test and learn about the most effective ways to provide support, resources and knowledge to make it easier for young social entrepreneurs to start-up and thrive.

UnLtd is creating a more entrepreneurial approach to learning. It is the largest network providing support to social entrepreneurs in the world, having backed around 9,000 social entrepreneurs across the UK with over £28 million.

There are two ways to get involved:

Hannah’s project is called Get Out! Explorers Club. It is a website and app designed to encourage children to get outdoors, get active and share experiences with one another.

Hannah says, “Research proves that children are not spending enough time outdoors, they are not getting enough physical exercise, and, as a result, they are losing touch with the natural world.”

The website and app, “merges both the online and offline world seamlessly. Children are becoming increasingly tech-savvy, with devices now becoming more accessible and popular than ever.”

For Hannah, it’s important to use the opportunity that technology creates for children to get more active – “The app effectively mobilises the concept and the outdoor events are designed as communal family experiences.”

Blessing’s project is Not Just A Youth Enterprise. He has developed his own brand of fair trade products including “rice, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and chocolate bars.

“We are a group of young people who are trying to make a difference by supporting farmers in development countries. We want to make sure they get a fair price for the products they produce,” says Blessing.

They also support young people with business skills and raise awareness of fair trade in the community.

A group of young volunteers dressed in fluorescent pink plan to drum up interest in Towcester Vision Youth Cafe’s latest project, Project V, by creating a wall of song lyrics. The project is an attempt to engage young people in planning, preparing, and delivering three events based on their own, and other young peoples’ passions.

Young People Crowdsource for UNAID
UNAIDS reports on young people presenting the first ever crowdsourced recommendations for AIDS response in UN history. The recommendations will inform the UNAIDS New Leadership Strategy. The initiative has showcased the incredible dedication, energy and enthusiasm of all the young people involved.

Turning Graffiti Into A Business
Travelers in ancient Egypt leave their mark on walls they pass during their journey by drawing, painting or simply etching their names. Now two young men in Istanbul are turning their love for graffiti into a business by setting up an agency that provides street art for clients. A profitable way of making graffiti legal!

Parker Liautaud’s North Pole Expedition for Climate Awareness
Parker Liautaud is the first person to check in at the North Pole on Foursquare. He wants to remind young people that they have to stand up and take notice of climate change, and he has embarked on his third expedition through the Arctic to do it.

Building Bridges, Breaking Boundaries
We spoke with award winner Martyn David about his project, Bridges. Working with 13-17 year olds in the Rhondda Cynon Taf area of South Wales, he aims to provide regular meet-ups offering support and education on LGBT issues.

The Run Dem Crew Youngers were amongst the runners making their way around the gruelling 26.2 miles of the London Marathon last weekend.

After months of training and hard work, 40,000 people joined them in taking on one of the toughest races in the world on Sunday.

Below are some videos of Charlie Dark presenting some of the Youngers with their well-deserved medals, and talking about what the crew is all about.

Various members of the crew have been talking about what was happening at Mile 21. The National Youth Enterprise Group have been making suggestions to the government of how new businesses could help the economy recover, and encouraging young people to get a business started is one solution to try and make this happen.

The scheme has the approval of Sir Richard Branson who has said, “This has the potential to transform the prospects of thousands of young people. The entrepreneurs of today will be the job creators of tomorrow so I’m delighted that the government has listened to those at the very start of their careers.”

The head of Live UnLtd, Josie Emberton, said, “We believe that young people themselves can offer the solutions to many of the issues faced by the UK today and we welcome initiatives like the Youth Enterprise Loan scheme as an additional resource for young people seeking to start-up their venture.”

Kinetics Wales is a parkour teaching business and club. The project was backed and supported by Live UnLtd.
