Before last year’s tournament in Germany, all the talk was of Czech hockey’s decline. That changed quickly after the Czechs marched to gold. Despite a roster featuring little NHL presence, they edged an Olympic-calibre Russian team 2-1 in the final.

The Czechs may not have the depth to build another international hockey dynasty like their reign of 1998 to 2001, when they won either the Olympics or the IIHF World Championship every year. Yet with a talented veteran group here in Bratislava, including more than 15 returning players from the 2010 squad, they certainly have the potential to challenge for top spot again this year.

Goal

Tomas Vokoun, a pending unrestricted free agent after yet another season with a save percentage of more than 92.0 with the Florida Panthers, won’t be between the pipes this year after backstopping his nation to gold in both 2005 and 2010. However, his two backups from 2010 should handle the netminding duties capably.

The starter will be Roman Pavelec of the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers. Big and athletic, the 23-year-old Pavelec enjoyed a breakout season with 58 starts, a 2.73 GAA, and a .914 save percentage despite suiting up for the Eastern Conference’s weakest defensive club. Jakub Stepanek, who established himself as the top goalie for SKA St. Petersburg after Evgeni Nabokov’s KHL foray didn’t pan out, should also see some action after serving as the third goalie in 2010.

Defence

While injuries limited Minnesota Wild blueliner Marek Zidlicky to 46 games this year, the 34-year-old veteran still managed seven goals, the third-highest total of his NHL career, and 17 assists. He’ll be expected to quarterback the Czech power play, along with Karel Rachunek, the KHL’s leading point-getter among defencemen during both the regular season and playoffs with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. Don’t expect a ton of bone-crunching bodychecks from this group, but even ex-NHL depth D-men like Martin Skoula and Lukas Krajicek bring enough puck-moving savvy that the Czechs should be just fine in their own zone.

"After we got off to a bit of a slow and uninspired start, we came back in the second period with a lot of energy and played well for the last 40 minutes of the game," said Katey Stone, head coach for Team USA and also the head women's ice hockey coach at Harvard University. "We now look forward to the opportunity to play for the gold medal on Monday."
Despite the U.S. outshooting Russia nearly seven-fold in the opening period, it was the Russians who struck first off a rebound at 3:21.

Trailing for the first time in the tournament, the Americans continued to pepper Russian netminder Anna Prugova with shots until they were successful at 11:31. Lamoureux-Kolls found the back of the net with a wrister from the slot and Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) buried a shot during a broken play off the faceoff :34 later for a 2-1 U.S. advantage.
Team USA scored a pair of power-play goals in the second period to go up 4-1. The first came at 4:08 when Jocelyne Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) beat Prugova with a low, hard-angle shot from the left-side goal line. uper Bowl XLV will be the 45th annual edition of the Super Bowl in American football, and the 41st annual championship game of the modern-era National Football League (NFL). The game, to be played on February 6, 2011, will pit the AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers against the NFC champion Green Bay Packers to decide the NFL champion for the 2010 season. The game will be held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the first time that the Super Bowl will be held in the Dallas – Fort Worth area; and the third time it will be held in Texas (Houston was the host city to Super Bowls VIII and XXXVIII).

This will be the eighth appearance in the Super Bowl for the Steelers (who hold the record with 6 Super Bowl wins) and the fifth for the Packers (who hold the record with 12 overall NFL titles, including 3 Super Bowl wins and 9 league titles prior to the Super Bowl-era). The Packers are three point favorites, making this the first Super Bowl the Steelers were underdogs in since Super Bowl XXX. In all four previous Super Bowls that Green Bay played in, they were also favored to win.

I'm rooting for the Packers because ... well, I'm not sure. I'm a Redskins fan so I like the NFC to win the Super Bowl in most years. I'm also a fan of Aaron Rodgers, who I totally respect what he's done during and after the whole Brett Favre mess. The Decision On Favre (which I agreed with at the time) factors in as well since I did say that Green Bay was doing the right thing.

But my football intelligence says the Steelers will win. They were the better team all year long, they've won two Super Bowls already and I think that Ben Roethlis berger has that "it" gene that allows him to make big plays in big moments ... even if he's looked bad all game long. While I like Rodgers, I'm not so sure about that yet.

So who do I pick? Instead of looking at the teams, I'm going to look at my own history.

I became a Redskins fan on a January morning in 1983. I was 7 years old and the Redskins were playing the Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII. Everyone in my family said that Miami was going to win. I picked Washington. The Redskins would win a thrilling game and I became a die-hard fan. As a 12-year old, I sat in a restaurant/bar watching Doug Williams rip the Broncos in 1988. In 1992, I sat in my parents' living room ... alone ... and watched the Skins beat the Bills.

Super Bowl 2011 will not have cheerleaders. For the first time since very early in the history of the game, neither team has a squad.

This news is incredibly ironic given the venue of the big game. Super Bowl XLV will be in Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, which is the home of one of the most famous cheerleading squad in football history - the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.

Alas, this year television viewers will not be treated to women bouncing on the sideline in scanty outfits. Will the game between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers be the same without the cheerleaders?

There are only six NFL franchises without squads of their own. They are the Steelers, Packers, Browns, Bears, Lions and Giants. What are the chances that the two teams came together to play the game without squads on the sidelines? This could actually happen again in a future Super Bowl.

The big question is will you miss the cheerleaders at the Super Bowl this year? Do you think it’ll make any difference at all? Be sure to tune in on Sunday, February 6 to watch the game on Fox 25 in Oklahoma City, which is Cox channel 12. The official Super Bowl XLV kickoff is slated for 5:25 p.m.
