The Santa Monica hotel has collaborated with curator Cynthia Greenwald to stage the show as part of their Live Well Again Artist Series. </span></p> <p style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: small;">Introspective, eye-opening and often humorous, his work brings a tangibility to the fleeting modern world.  A preservationist of sorts, Solomon paints web pages. That's right, and it's like nothing you've seen before -  (unless you've been to one of his celebrated exhibits in New York). </span></p> <p style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: small;">As issues of cyber identity and privacy move further to the forefront of the western news cycle, Solomon’s Facebook-inspired Kenneth Solomon series provides playful yet poignant commentary.  Solomon paints the Facebook profiles of homonymously named users. He says that he sees the performative work as a “collaborative self-portrait.”</span></p> <p style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: small;">Solomon’s new paintings are detailed, reconstructed snapshots of the ever-changing internet in an attempt to slow down the constant flow of information on the web. Two exclusive pieces and several others are part of the hotel’s Live Well Again Art and Events Series, on exhibit between September 15 and November 30.</p> <p class="p1">It’s hard to miss Francis’ <em>Variant Color</em> piece, commissioned by Casa, from both Ocean Front Walk and inside the lobby. When sunlight hits the colored translucent circles affixed to the veranda windows, ambient, colored light instantly filters through the room. Francis likens the effect to painting with water colors.</p> <p class="p1">Another Casa exclusive, <em>Glass Theater </em>(in collaboration with artist Felicia Page), is showcased on the mirror at the top of the north lobby staircase. Using Iromizu<sup>©</sup>, a polyvinyl material available solely in Japan, Shingo demonstrates his unique creative process by applying cut-out sections to glass, which makes each installation one-of-a-kind. </p> <p>Shingo's Lantern series consists of enormous, color-blocked painted lanterns hanging from the lobby ceiling. According to Francis, the lanterns represent ideas such as the “inner, outer, the unknown, the known and our daily lives.”</p> <p class="p1">Francis says his pieces are inspired by his own beachside childhood in Santa Monica as well as the memory of the hotel’s past as a sanctuary for healing.</p> <p class="p1">“I was really inspired by the history of Casa del Mar and all of its past lives as a place of wellness and restoration,” said Francis. “I am equally awed by its gorgeous view of the horizon  — something that is central to many of my paintings.”</p> <p class="p1">Shingo Francis was born in Santa Monica, California, in 1969. At the age of three, he moved to Japan and lived there until the age of 13, at which point he returned to the US and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1992 from Pitzer College in Claremont, California. In 2001, he returned to Japan, where he currently resides.</p> <p class="p1">He has been met with continued success throughout his career. The rest of the 2,200+ panels, painted by children and volunteers, will be installed within three weeks, right in Casa's own backyard. <p />For six months preceding the installation, Portraits of Hope engaged children and adults from 118 schools, hospitals, youth and social service programs in civic leadership and creative therapy sessions. The Braille Institute, Special Olympics, Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitative Center, and Program for Torture Victims are among the many organizations that have participated. <p />Portraits of Hope initiatives are privately funded. The partnership and support of the private sector makes it possible to involve thousands of children in the program and to promote the project’s themes of civic leadership, environmental initiative, and community engagement. A Louisiana native, Plas moved to California after touring with his brother, to pursue a music degree. However, his schooling took a backseat when Plas began booking record dates again and again. He became well known in the Hollywood jazz scene<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, and caught the eye of Capitol Records, where he soon became a regular session sideman and soloist during Capitol's halcyon years.</span><p><div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He joined the Merv Griffin show, playing with some of the greatest for fifteen years. It consists of three orange aluminum canoes strapped vertically to three pylons.
