When is Onam Celebrated:

Onam is celebrated in the beginning of the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham). In 2013, the most important day of Onam (known as Thiru Onam) is on Monday September 16. Rituals commence 10 days before Thiru Onam, on Atham.

You can, however, incorporate some home remedies for blackheads and whiteheads into your daily beauty regimen and in a few weeks, you will experience a drastic reduction or even total elimination of the problem.

● Toothpaste – Toothpaste is an effective blackhead and whitehead remover. Apply a thin paste to your infected areas and let it sit on your face for at least 25 minutes. You will probably feel a burning sensation when you apply the toothpaste, but this is normal and will pass. Once you remove the toothpaste, the top of your blackheads and whiteheads will disappear, but you still need to thoroughly wash your face to remove the buildup underneath. Repeat this home remedy every other day for two weeks.

● Tomato – Tomatoes have natural antiseptic properties that dry up whiteheads and blackheads. Peel and mash a small tomato. Apply the tomato pulp to your blackheads and whiteheads before going to bed. Leave the tomato pulp on your face while you sleep and then wash your face in warm water in the morning.

● Lemon -Wash your face in warm water. Then, squeeze the juice of one lemon into a bowl. Add in a pinch of salt and stir the mixture. Apply the mixture to your blackheads and whiteheads. Leave the mixture on for approximately 20 minutes and then wash your face with warm water again.

● Lime – You can also use equal parts of lime juice and cinnamon powder and apply this mixture to blackheads. Leave it on overnight and rinse it off in the morning.

● Cornstarch – Mix about a three-to-one cornstarch to vinegar ratio into a paste. Apply it to your problem areas and let sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Remove the paste with warm water and a washcloth.

● Yogurt – Mix three tablespoons of plain yogurt with two tablespoons of oatmeal. Add one teaspoon of olive oil and one tablespoon of lemon juice to the mixture. Stir the mixture thoroughly and apply it to the effective area of the face. Let the mixture sit for five to seven minutes then rinse off with cold water.

● Almond or oatmeal – Mix either oatmeal or almond powder with just enough rose water to make a spreadable paste. Apply it to your problem areas with your fingertips first and then apply it to the rest of your face. Let it set for about 15 minutes and then rinse your face with cold water.

● Rice – Soak rice in milk for 5 hours and then grind this in a blender until it is paste-like in consistency. Use the paste as a scrub on affected areas of the body.

● Potatoes – Grate raw potatoes and then rub the area with the mixture. Wash it off after 15 minutes.

● Fenugreek leaves – Crush some fenugreek leaves and mix with water to form a paste. Put this on the face for 15 minutes and then remove it. Do this every night to keep your face free of blackheads.

● Coriander leaves – Mix some coriander leaves and a little turmeric powder with water and form a paste. Use this as a mask to eliminate blackheads.

● Oatmeal -Grind oatmeal into a powder in a blender and then add some rose water. Use this on affected areas for 15 minutes and then wash it off with cold water.

● Baking soda – Prepare a mixture of equal parts of baking soda and water and rub it onto your face or other body areas prone to blackheads. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water.

14.Clean around the bathroom

DIFFERENT USES FOR COLA

The main use for Cola is as a beverage, but there are other things it can be used for. Learning the other uses for Cola can save you money on purchasing several different products. For example, Cola can remove stains and rust on metal. That’s now two products you don’t have to buy.

*Removing Rust and Hard Water
Cola can remove rust from nails and from the bumper of your car. To remove rust on a small object, fill a plastic cup with Cola. Then add the rusted metal object. Leave it overnight and then wipe the rust off with an old rag. To remove rust from larger metal you will need a sheet of aluminum foil. Roll the aluminum foil up in to a ball and dip in the Cola so that it is covered on all sides with the liquid. Rub it in a circle over the rust. You may need to apply the Coke a few times and then rub, but it will work.It is also used in removing hard water from your bathroom tiles and toilet bowls.

*Stain Removal
Cola contains acid that can remove grease and blood stains from fabric. Fill your washing machine and add your normal amount of laundry detergent. Then add one can of Cola. Place a load of laundry in the washing machine including the items with the stains. When the wash cycle is over, your clothing will be stain free.

*As Medicine
Cola is often used to treat upset stomachs. You must first let the Cola sit out and become flat. If you are feeling nauseous you will want to sip the flat Cola every ten minutes or so until your stomach begins to feel better. If you have an upset stomach due to diarrhea, you can drink the Cola at a faster rate. Your stomach will be feeling better in no time.

*Removing Pests
If you have a problem with slugs or snails you can use Cola as both bait and poison. Pour the Cola in a small dish and watch the sugar attract the slugs and snails. Once the pests get on the dish the acid will destroy them. Cola also works to remove bugs from a car windshield. Just pour the Cola over the bugs on the windshield and wait 10 seconds. Use your windshield wipers and the bugs will easily come off.

*For Cooking
You can use Cola as a marinade to make meats more tender. Pour a can of Cola in a mixing bowl and then add a dry packet of Italian dressing mix. Stir the two together and place your meat in the bowl. Make sure the meat is covered on both sides by the mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and set in the refrigerator for 2-4 hours before cooking. Your meat will be nice and tender.

భారతదేశానికి ఢిల్లీ రాజధానిగా మారి డిసెంబర్‌ 12 నాటికి వందేళ్ళు పూర్తి కానున్నారుు. ఈ వందేళ్ళలో ఎంతో మార్పు. నాటి బ్రిటిష్‌ ఇండియాకు రాజధానిగా కోల్‌కతా ఉండింది. సరిగ్గా వందేళ్ళ క్రితం బ్రిటిష్‌ వారు ఢిల్లీని రాజధానిగా ప్రకటించారు. నాటి నుంచి నేటి వరకూ రాజధాని నగరంలో ఎన్నెన్నో మార్పులు. పాత అందాలు అదృశ్యమై కొత్త అందాలు చేరారుు. పట్నం వాతావరణం మాయమైపోరుు మెట్రోపాలిటన్‌ కల్చర్‌ చేరింది. ఎంతో అభివృద్ధి...మరెంతో విధ్వంసం...

ఒక నగరం జీవితకాలంలో వందేళ్ళు ఏమంత పెద్దది కాదు. అందులో విశేష మూ ఉండదు. ఢిల్లీ నగరం మాత్రం ఇందుకు భిన్నం. ఈ నగరం దేశరాజధాని హోదాను సంతరించుకొని వందేళ్ళు గడిచాయి. ఈ వం దేళ్ళలోనూ ఎన్నో మార్పులు చోటు చేసుకు న్నాయి. పాత ఆనవాళ్ళు చెదిరిపోయాయి. కొత్త ఆనవాళ్ళు వచ్చిపడ్డాయి. ఒక శతాబ్ది కా లంలో...ఒక్కో దశాబ్దిలో ఒక్కో రకం పోకడ. వెరసి నేటికి రాజధాని ఢిల్లీ ‘న్యూఢిల్లీ’గా మారిపోయింది. ‘‘కౌన్సిల్‌లో గవర్నర్‌ జనరల్‌తో సంప్రదిం పుల అనంతరం మంత్రులు ఇచ్చిన సలహా మేరకు భారత ప్రభుత్వం దేశ రాజధానిని కలకత్తా నుంచి ప్రాచీన రాజధాని అయిన ఢిల్లీకి మార్చాలని నిర్ణయించినట్లు తెలియజే సేందుకు ఎంతగానో సంతోషిస్తున్నాం’’ - అని 1911 డిసెంబర్‌ 12న నాటి రాజు ఐదో జార్జ్‌ ప్రకటించారు. ఈ ప్రకటనతో ఆయన దేశం లో సంచలనం కలిగించారు. 18వ శతాబ్ది నుంచి కూడా బ్రిటిష్‌ సామ్రాజ్యానికి భారతదేశంలో ఆయువుపట్టుగా ఉన్న కలకత్తా నుంచి రాజధాని హోదా ఢిల్లీకి మారింది. ఆ ప్రకటన వెలువడిన మరుక్షణం నుంచే ఢిల్లీకి రాజధాని హంగులు సమకూరసాగాయి.

భారత సామ్రాజ్యాధీశుడిగా కింగ్‌ జార్జ్‌ను పట్టాభిషిక్తుడిని చేసే సమయంలో రాజధాని మార్పు ప్రకటన వెలువడింది. అప్పట్లో ఢిల్లీ జనాభా 2,33,000గా ఉండింది. చక్రవర్తి పర్యటనను పురస్కరించుకొని, ఇటీవల కామ న్వెల్త్‌ గేమ్స్‌ సందర్భంగా చేసినట్లుగానే, 300 మంది అసాంఘిక శక్తులను అరెస్టు చేశారు. ఇలా అరెస్టు అయిన వారిలో నిరుపేదలే అధిక సంఖ్యలో ఉన్నారు. ఈ ఆనవాయితీకి పట్టాభిషేక మహోత్సవం నుంచే బీజం పడింది. అది నేటికీ కొనసాగుతోంది.

ఎంతో గోప్యం
కోల్‌కతా నుంచి కంటే కూడా ఢిల్లీ నుంచిదే శాన్ని పాలించడం సులభం అని బ్రిటిష్‌ వారు భావించిన నేపథ్యంలో న్యూఢిల్లీ రాజధానిగా ఏర్పడింది. తమ నగరానికి రాజధాని హోదా కావాలని ఢిల్లీవాసులు కోరుకోలేదు. అందుకు ఉద్యమించలేదు. అయినా ఢిల్లీ నగరానికి ఆ హోదా దక్కింది. చివరి క్షణం వరకూ ఈ ప్రక టనను ఎంతో గోప్యంగా ఉంచడం విశేషం. ఆ ప్రకటన చేయగానే సభలో కొద్దిసేపటి వరకు నిశ్శబ్దం తాండవించింది. సభికులకు విషయం అర్థమయ్యేందుకు కొంత సమయం పట్టింది. ఆ తరువాత కలకలం మొదలైంది. అత్యంత గోప్యంగా ఉంచిన రహస్యాల్లో ఒక టిగా ఇది చరిత్రలో నిలిచిపోయింది.

ఢిల్లీని నూతన రాజధానిగా తీర్చిదిద్దడం ఎన్నో సవాళ్ళతో కూడుకున్నదిగా ఉండింది. ఢిల్లీ పట్టణానికి అవసరమైన మౌలిక వసతు లను సమకూర్చడం కన్నా పట్టణానికి నగర రూపురేఖలు జోడించడమే అప్పట్లో బ్రిటిష్‌ వారికి ప్రధానంగా ఉండింది. నేటికీ అదే తరహాలో ఢిల్లీ అభివృద్ధి కొనసాగుతోంది. కొత్తఢిల్లీ నిర్మాణయత్నం ఢిల్లీని రాజధానిగా ప్రకటించిన వెంటనే ప్రభుత్వ కార్యాలయాలకు తాత్కాలిక ఏర్పా ట్లు మొదలయ్యాయి. పాత ఢిల్లీకి చేరువలోనే కొత్త ఢిల్లీని నిర్మించే ప్రయత్నాలూ ఆరంభ
మయ్యాయి. అందుకోసం పలు ప్రాంతాలను పరిశీలించారు. సబ్జి మండి, సివిల్‌ లైన్స్‌ తది
తరాలను పరిశీలించి వివిధ కారణాల రీత్యా తోసిపుచ్చారు. చివరకు రైజినా గ్రామ ప్రాం తం బ్రిటిష్‌ ఉన్నతాధికారులకు నచ్చింది.

అక్కడ ఉన్న గుట్టను తొలచివేసి ప్రభుత్వ భవ నాల నిర్మాణాలను ఆరంభించారు. ఎడ్విన్‌ లాండ్‌సీర్‌ లుటెన్స్‌, తన స్నేహితుడు హెర్‌బెర్ట్‌ బాకెర్‌ అనే ఆర్కిటెక్ట్‌లు ఈ పనులు చేపట్టా రు. లుటెన్స్‌ అప్పటి వరకూ గొప్ప ట్రాక్‌ రికా ర్డు ఏమీ లేనప్పటికీ, కొంతమంది బ్రిటిష్‌ సంపన్నుల భవనాలను అందంగా నిర్మించిన కారణంగా ఆయనకు ఈ పని అప్పచెప్పారు. నాటి వైస్రాయి లార్డ్‌ లైటన్‌ ఏకైక కుమార్తెను లుటెన్స్‌ వివాహం చేసుకోవడం కూడా ఇందు కు కారణం కావచ్చు. స్థూలంగా న్యూఢిల్లీ, గవర్నమెంట్‌ హౌస్‌ (రాష్టప్రతి భవన్‌) డిజైన్‌ ను లుటెన్స్‌ పర్యవేక్షించగా, సెక్రటరి యేట్స్‌ (నార్త్‌ , సౌత్‌ బ్లాక్స్‌), కౌన్సిల్‌ (పార్ల మెంట్‌) డిజైన్‌ బాధ్యతలను బాకెర్‌ చేపట్టారు. బ్రిటిష్‌ సామ్రాజ్య దర్పాన్ని ప్రతిబింబించే విధంగా ఆనాటి భవనాలు, కట్టడాలు రూపుదిద్దు కున్నాయి. ఢిల్లీలో యూనివర్సిటీ కోసం నాటి నాయ కులు పెద్ద పోరాటమే చేయాల్సి వచ్చింది. ఫలితంగా 1922లో అక్కడ యూనివర్సిటీ రూపుదిద్దుకుంది. దాని నిర్మాణానికి అరకొర నిధులనే వెచ్చించారు.

ఎన్నెన్నో సమస్యలు
పాత ఢిల్లీ నగరంలో వసతులు మెరుగుపర్చేందుకు నాటి ప్రభత్వం ఏమాత్రం శ్రద్ధ వహిం చలేదు. 1927లో కౌన్సిల్‌ హౌస్‌ (నేటి పార్ల మెంట్‌)ను ప్రారంభించారు. దాన్ని ప్రారంభిం చిన రెండేళ్ళకే భగత్‌ సింగ్‌, బి.కె.దత్‌ అందు లో చిన్న పాటి బాంబు పేల్చారు. 1947లో స్వాతంత్య్రం వచ్చిన తరువాత ఢిల్లీలో పెను మార్పులు చోటు చేసుకున్నాయి. దేశవిభజన సందర్భంగా పాకిస్తాన్‌ నుంచి పెద్ద ఎత్తున హిందువులు ఢిల్లీకి వలస వచ్చారు. వారందరికీ కొన్నేళ్ళ పాటు ఢిల్లీలోనే ఆవాసం కల్పించారు. అదే సమయంలో ఢిల్లీలో పలువురు ముస్లింలు పాకిస్తాన్‌కు వెళ్ళగా వారి ఇళ్ళను ఇతరులు ఆక్రమించారు.

మాస్టర్‌ ప్లాన్‌
ఢిల్లీ ప్రణాళికారహితంగా విస్తరించడం మొదలైంది. దీనిపై నాటి ప్రధాని నెహ్రూ సై తం ఆందోళన వ్యక్తం చేశారు. ప్రణాళికాబ ద్దంగా ఢిల్లీని విస్తరించే ప్రయత్నాలకు అప్పు డే బీజం పడింది. విస్తరణను నియంత్రించేం దుకు ఒక సెంట్రల్‌ అథారిటీ ఉండాలని నెహ్రూ భావించారు. 1957లో మునిసిపల్‌ కార్పొరేషన్‌ ఆఫ్‌ ఢిల్లీ, ఢిల్లీ డెవలప్‌మెంట్‌ అథారిటీ ఏర్పాటయ్యాయి. మాస్టర్‌ ప్లాన్‌ను రూపొందించే యత్నాలు మొదలయ్యాయి.

1981 వరకు ఢిల్లీ విస్తరణ అంతా ఆనాడు నెహ్రూ ఆమోదించిన మార్గదర్శకాలకు అను గుణంగానే జరిగింది. చారిత్రక కట్టడాల చుట్టూరా ఉన్న విశాల స్థలాలను ఉద్యానవనా లుగా తీర్చిదిద్దారు. పచ్చదనం పెంపొందిం చారు. నేడు ఢిల్లీ ఎన్నో పర్యాటక, చారిత్రక స్థలాలతో అలరారుతోంది. ఢిల్లీ యూనివర్సిటీ వీసీగా ఉండిన గ్యాయర్‌ ఆ యూనివర్సిటీ అభివృద్ధికి ఎంతో కృషి చే శారు. ఎన్నో కళాశాలలను ఏర్పాటు చేశారు. మరోవంకన ఢిల్లీ విలాసజీవితానికి మారు పేరుగా కూడా మారిపోయింది. ఆరోగ్య సదు
పాయాలు, ఆసుపత్రులు విస్తరించాయి. ఢిల్లీ అభివృద్ధికి మరాఠాలు, బెంగాలీలు, తమిళు లతో పాటు దేశంలోని వివిధ ప్రాంతాలకు చెందిన వారు కూడా ఎంతో కృషి చేశారు. నేడు ఢిల్లీ నగరం భిన్న ప్రాంతీయుల ఆచార వ్యవహారాలతో కళకళలాడుతుంటుంది. ఎవ రికి ఏ పండుగ వచ్చినా మిగిలిన వారూ ఆ వేడుకలో భాగస్వాములవుతుంటారు.

రవాణా
రాజ్‌పథ్‌, జన్‌పథ్‌, అక్బర్‌ రోడ్‌ లాంటి మా ర్గాలు దేశమంతటా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందాయి. ఢిల్లీ అంతటా భూగర్భ సబ్‌వేలు అధిక సంఖ్యలో ఉన్నాయి. ఢిల్లీ మొత్తం మీద 2,700 బస్‌ స్టాప్‌లు ఉన్నాయి. న్యూ ఢిల్లీ రైల్వే స్టేషన్‌ ప్రపంచంలోని అతి పెద్ద రైల్వేస్టేషన్లలో ఒకటి. ఇందిరాగాంధీ అంతర్జాతీయ విమానాశ్రయం బాగా పేరొందింది. 2006-07లో 23 లక్షల కు పైగా ప్రయాణికులు దీన్ని ఉపయోగించు కున్నారు. 2020 నాటికి దీన్ని ఉపయోగించు కునే వారి సంఖ్య ఏటా 100 మిలియన్లకు చేరుకుంటుందని అంచనా. ఢిల్లీలో రవాణా సాధనాలుగా బస్సులు, ఆటోలు, రైళ్ళు బాగా వాడుకలో ఉన్నాయి. ఢిల్లీ ట్రాన్స్‌పోర్ట్‌ కార్పొ రేషన్‌ యావత్‌ ప్రపంచంలోనే అత్యధిక సంఖ్యలో పర్యావరణ స్నేహపూర్వక సీఎన్‌జీ బస్సులను కలిగి ఉంది. బస్‌ ర్యాపిడ్‌ సిస్టమ్‌ అంబేద్కర్‌ నగర్‌ నుంచి ఢిల్లీ గేట్‌ వరకు అమల్లో ఉంది. రైల్వే వ్యవస్థ 153 కి.మీ మేర రైలు మార్గాన్ని కలిగి ఉంది. 2020 నాటికి ఇది 413 కి.మీ.కు చేరుకోగలదని అంచనా. 130 స్టేషన్లు ఉన్నాయి.

కన్నాట్‌ ప్లేస్‌
ఢిల్లీలో కన్నాట్‌ ప్లేస్‌ అనేది వృత్తాకారంలో ఉన్న వాణిజ్య ప్రాంతం. దీని అవుటర్‌ రింగ్‌ నుంచి 12 మార్గాలు ఉన్నాయి. ఇందులో ఒకటి జన్‌పథ్‌.

జనాభా
2011 నాటి జనాభా లెక్కల ప్రకారం ఢిల్లీలో ఓ చిన్న భాగమైన న్యూఢిల్లీ జనాభా సుమా రుగా 2.50 క్షలు. హిందువులు 86.8 శాతం, ముస్లింలు 6.3 శాతం, సిక్కులు 2.4 శాతం, జైనులు 1.1 శాతం, క్రైస్తవులు 0.9 శాతం. పలు రకాల భాషలు మాట్లాడే వారు ఇక్కడ నివసిస్తున్నారు. నగరంలో ఎక్కడ చూ సినా కాస్మోపాలిటన్‌ సంస్కృతి కనిపిస్తుంది. స్వాతంత్య్రదిన, గణతంత్రదిన వేడుకలు భారీస్థాయిలో జరుగుతాయి. వాటిని చూసేం దుకు విదేశీయులు కూడా వస్తుంటారు.

ప్రగతి మైదాన్‌
ప్రగతి మైదాన్‌లో జరిగే ఆటో ఎక్స్‌పో ఆసి యాలోనే అతిపెద్దదిగా చెప్పవచ్చు. రెండేళ్ళ కోసారి ఈ ప్రదర్శన జరుగుతుంది.

ఢిల్లీ నగరానికి శతాబ్దాల చరిత ఉంది. 12వ శతాబ్ది నుంచి 19 వ శతాబ్ది మధ్య కాలం దా కా ఎన్నో ఎంతో మంది రాజులు దాన్ని తమ రాజధానిగా చేసుకున్నారు. నిజానికి ఢిల్లీ అనే ది ఒక్క నగరం కాదు. ఏడు పట్టణాలు కలసి రూపొందిన నగరం. సిరి, తుగ్లకాబాద్‌, జహా నాపనా, ఫిరోజాబాద్‌, దినపానా, షేర్‌గఢ్‌, షా హజనానాబాద్‌లు కలసి ఢిల్లీ నగరంగా రూ పాంతరం చెందాయి. వీటికి తోడుగా న్యూఢి ల్లీ కూడా ఈ జాబితాలో చేరింది. షాజహాన్‌ క్రీ.శ. 1639-1648 మధ్య కాలంలో నిర్మించినషాహజనానాబాద్‌ 1857 వరకు కూడా మొగల్‌ సామ్రాజ్యానికి రాజధానిగా ఉండింది. ఢిల్లీ భౌగోళిక నేపథ్యం కారణంగా ఎంతో మంది రాజులు దాన్ని తమ రాజధా నిగా చేసుకున్నారు. యమునా నది ఒడ్డున ఉండడం, ఆయా సామ్రాజ్యాలకు పాలనకు అనువైన ప్రాంతంలో, వ్యూహాత్మకంగా కీలక స్థానంలో ఉండడం, ఆరావళి పర్వత పంక్తి లాంటివి ఇందుకు ప్రధాన కారణాలుగా చెప్పవచ్చు.

ఒకప్పుడు 70,000 మంది అవసరాలు తీర్చేందుకు ఉద్దేశించిన ఢిల్లీ నగరంలో నేడు 1.6 కోట్ల మంది నివసిస్తున్నారు. అందుకు తగ్గట్లుగా మౌలిక వసతులు మాత్రం వృద్ధి చెందలేదు. పర్వతపంక్తిని దెబ్బ తీయడం, యమునా నదిని కలుషితం చేయడం లాంటి వి ప్రత్యక్షంగా, పరోక్షంగా ఢిల్లీ మనుగడను ప్రశ్నార్థకం చేస్తున్నాయి. ఒకప్పుడు ఒకే వర సగా ఉన్న కొండలు, గుట్టలు నేడు ఎక్కడిక్క డ ముక్కచెక్కలుగా మారాయి. పట్టణీకరణ అటు కొండలను, ఇటు యమునా నదిని దెబ్బ తీస్తోంది.

వేగంగా విస్తరిస్తున్న నగరం
దేశరాజధానిగా వ్యవహరించే న్యూఢిల్లీ ప్రాంతం ఢిల్లీ మెట్రో పోలీస్‌ పరిధిలో ఉంటుంది. ఢిల్లీ కేంద్రపాలిత ప్రాంతం లోని తొమ్మిది జిల్లాల్లో అది ఒకటి. దీని విస్తీర్ణం 42.7 చ.కి. మీ. 134 దేశాలకు చెందిన విదేశీ రాయబార కార్యాలయాలు ఇక్కడే ఉన్నాయి. 1911 డిసెంబర్‌ 15న న్యూఢిల్లీకి శంకుస్థాపన జరిగింది. 1931 ఫిబ్రవరి 13న బ్రిటిష్‌ ఇండియా గవర్నర్‌ జనరల్‌ లార్డ్‌ ఇర్విన్‌ దీన్ని లాంఛనంగా ప్రారంభించారు. ఢిల్లీలోని హుమాయున్‌ సమాధి, కుతుబ్‌ కాంప్లెక్స్‌ రెండూ కూడా యునెస్కో వరల్డ్‌ హెరిటేజ్‌ సైట్స్‌గా గుర్తింపు పొందాయి. ప్రపంచంలోనే అతివేగంగా విస్తరిస్తున్న నగరాల్లో ఒకటిగా ఢిల్లీ గుర్తింపు పొందింది. జీవిత కాలంలో కనీసం ఒకసారి సందర్శించిన నగరాల్లో ఒకటిగా ఈ నగరం ప్రఖ్యాతి చెందింది. కొత్త ఢిల్లీ అనేది ఏడు పాత పట్టణాలను కలుపుకుంటూ ఏర్పడింది. అందుకే జంతర్‌ మంతర్‌, లోధీ గార్డెన్స్‌ వంటి చారిత్రక కట్టడాలు కూడా దీని పరిధిలోకి వచ్చాయి.

చరిత్రలో సుస్థిర స్థానం
1947లో దేశానికి స్వాతంత్య్రం వచ్చిన తరు వాత ఢిల్లీకి పరిమిత స్వయం ప్రతిపత్తి కల్పించారు. కేంద్రప్రభుత్వం ఓ చీఫ్‌ కమిషనర్‌ను నియమించింది. 1956లో ఢిల్లీని కేంద్రపాలిత ప్రాంతం గా మార్చారు. ఫలితంగా చీఫ్‌ కమిష నర్‌ స్థానంలోనే లెఫ్ట్‌నెంట్‌ గవర్నర్‌ నియమితులయ్యారు. ఒకప్పుడు సఫ్దర ్‌జంగ్‌ విమానాశ్రయం నగరానికి ఒక మూలన ఉండింది. అది ఇప్పుడు నగరం నడిబొడ్డుకు చేరింది. ప్రస్తుతం దీన్ని కమర్షియల్‌ విమానాలకు ఉపయోగించడం లేదు. 1962 నుంచి పాలం విమానాశ్రయం వాడుక లోకి వచ్చింది. 1982లో జరిగిన ఆసియన్‌ గేమ్స్‌, 2010లో జరిగిన కామన్వెల్త్‌ గేమ్స్‌ క్రీడారంగ చరిత్రలో ఢిల్లీ నగరానికి సుస్థిర స్థానాన్ని కల్పించాయి.

(5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about "nothing". (Refer back to #3 for the meaning of nothing.)

(6) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

(7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome. (I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says 'Thanks a lot' - that is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say 'you're welcome' . that will bring on a 'whatever'...).

(8) Whatever: Is a woman's way of saying Get Lost!

(9) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking 'What's wrong?' (For the woman's response refer to #5, 3 & 1).

We don't need to wait for governments to find a solution for this problem: each individual can bring an important help adopting a more responsible lifestyle: starting from little, everyday things. It's the only reasonable way to save our planet, before it is too late.

Here is a list of 50 simple things that everyone can do in order to fight against and reduce the Global Warming phenomenon: some of these ideas are at no cost, some other require a little effort or investment but can help you save a lot of money, in the middle-long term!

1. Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (cfl)CFLs use 60% less energy than a regular bulb. This simple switch will save about 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

2. Install a programmable thermostatProgrammable thermostats will automatically lower the heat or air conditioning at night and raise them again in the morning. They can save you $100 a year on your energy bill.

3. Move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summerAlmost half of the energy we use in our homes goes to heating and cooling. You could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment.

4. Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditionerCleaning a dirty air filter can save 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

5. Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchasesLook for the Energy Star label on new appliances to choose the most energy efficient products available.

6. Do not leave appliances on standbyUse the "on/off" function on the machine itself. A TV set that's switched on for 3 hours a day (the average time Europeans spend watching TV) and in standby mode during the remaining 21 hours uses about 40% of its energy in standby mode.

7. Wrap your water heater in an insulation blanketYou’ll save 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple action. You can save another 550 pounds per year by setting the thermostat no higher than 50°C.

8. Move your fridge and freezerPlacing them next to the cooker or boiler consumes much more energy than if they were standing on their own. For example, if you put them in a hot cellar room where the room temperature is 30-35ºC, energy use is almost double and causes an extra 160kg of CO2 emissions for fridges per year and 320kg for freezers.

9. Defrost old fridges and freezers regularlyEven better is to replace them with newer models, which all have automatic defrost cycles and are generally up to two times more energy-efficient than their predecessors.

10. Don't let heat escape from your house over a long periodWhen airing your house, open the windows for only a few minutes. If you leave a small opening all day long, the energy needed to keep it warm inside during six cold months (10ºC or less outside temperature) would result in almost 1 ton of CO2 emissions.

11. Replace your old single-glazed windows with double-glazingThis requires a bit of upfront investment, but will halve the energy lost through windows and pay off in the long term. If you go for the best the market has to offer (wooden-framed double-glazed units with low-emission glass and filled with argon gas), you can even save more than 70% of the energy lost.

12. Get a home energy auditMany utilities offer free home energy audits to find where your home is poorly insulated or energy inefficient. You can save up to 30% off your energy bill and 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Energy Star can help you find an energy specialist.

13. Cover your pots while cookingDoing so can save a lot of the energy needed for preparing the dish. Even better are pressure cookers and steamers: they can save around 70%!

14. Use the washing machine or dishwasher only when they are fullIf you need to use it when it is half full, then use the half-load or economy setting. There is also no need to set the temperatures high. Nowadays detergents are so efficient that they get your clothes and dishes clean at low temperatures.

15. Take a shower instead of a bathA shower takes up to four times less energy than a bath. To maximise the energy saving, avoid power showers and use low-flow showerheads, which are cheap and provide the same comfort.

16. Use less hot waterIt takes a lot of energy to heat water. You can use less hot water by installing a low flow showerhead (350 pounds of carbon dioxide saved per year) and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (500 pounds saved per year) instead of hot.

17. Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possibleYou can save 700 pounds of carbon dioxide when you air dry your clothes for 6 months out of the year.

18. Insulate and weatherize your homeProperly insulating your walls and ceilings can save 25% of your home heating bill and 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Caulking and weather-stripping can save another 1,700 pounds per year. Energy Efficient has more information on how to better insulate your home.

19. Be sure you’re recycling at homeYou can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide a year by recycling half of the waste your household generates.

20. Recycle your organic wasteAround 3% of the greenhouse gas emissions through the methane is released by decomposing bio-degradable waste. By recycling organic waste or composting it if you have a garden, you can help eliminate this problem! Just make sure that you compost it properly, so it decomposes with sufficient oxygen, otherwise your compost will cause methane emissions and smell foul.

21. Buy intelligentlyOne bottle of 1.5l requires less energy and produces less waste than three bottles of 0.5l. As well, buy recycled paper products: it takes less 70 to 90% less energy to make recycled paper and it prevents the loss of forests worldwide.

22. Choose products that come with little packaging and buy refills when you canYou will also cut down on waste production and energy use... another help against global warming.

23. Reuse your shopping bagWhen shopping, it saves energy and waste to use a reusable bag instead of accepting a disposable one in each shop. Waste not only discharges CO2 and methane into the atmosphere, it can also pollute the air, groundwater and soil.

24. Reduce wasteMost products we buy cause greenhouse gas emissions in one or another way, e.g. during production and distribution. By taking your lunch in a reusable lunch box instead of a disposable one, you save the energy needed to produce new lunch boxes.

25. Plant a treeA single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Shade provided by trees can also reduce your air conditioning bill by 10 to 15%. The Arbor Day Foundation has information on planting and provides trees you can plant with membership.

26. Switch to green powerIn many areas, you can switch to energy generated by clean, renewable sources such as wind and solar. In some of these, you can even get refunds by government if you choose to switch to a clean energy producer, and you can also earn money by selling the energy you produce and don't use for yourself.

27. Buy locally grown and produced foodsThe average meal in the United States travels 1,200 miles from the farm to your plate. Buying locally will save fuel and keep money in your community.

28. Buy fresh foods instead of frozenFrozen food uses 10 times more energy to produce.

29. Seek out and support local farmers marketsThey reduce t
he amount of energy required to grow and transport the food to you by one fifth. Seek farmer’s markets in your area, and go for them.

30. Buy organic foods as much as possibleOrganic soils capture and store carbon dioxide at much higher levels than soils from conventional farms. If we grew all of our corn and soybeans organically, we’d remove 580 billion pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere!

31. Eat less meatMethane is the second most significant greenhouse gas and cows are one of the greatest methane emitters. Their grassy diet and multiple stomachs cause them to produce methane, which they exhale with every breath.

32. Reduce the number of miles you drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possibleAvoiding just 10 miles of driving every week would eliminate about 500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year! Look for transit options in your area.

33. Start a carpool with your coworkers or classmatesSharing a ride with someone just 2 days a week will reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by 1,590 pounds a year. eRideShare.com runs a free service connecting north american commuters and travelers.

By readjusting your driving style you can save money on both fuel and car mantainance.

37. Check your tires weekly to make sure they’re properly inflatedProper tire inflation can improve gas mileage by more than 3%. Since every gallon of gasoline saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, every increase in fuel efficiency makes a difference!

38. When it is time for a new car, choose a more fuel efficient vehicleYou can save 3,000 pounds of carbon dioxide every year if your new car gets only 3 miles per gallon more than your current one. 41. Fly lessAir travel produces large amounts of emissions so reducing how much you fly by even one or two trips a year can reduce your emissions significantly. You can also offset your air travel carbon emissions by investingin renewable energy projects.

42. Encourage your school or business to reduce emissionsYou can extend your positive influence on global warming well beyond your home by actively encouraging other to take action.

43. Join the virtual marchThe Stop Global Warming Virtual March is a non-political effort to bring people concerned about global warming together in one place. Add your voice to the hundreds of thousands of other people urging action on this issue.

44. Encourage the switch to renewable energySuccessfully combating global warming requires a national transition to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and biomass. These technologies are ready to be deployed more widely but there are regulatory barriers impeding them. U.S. citizens, take action to break down those barriers with Vote Solar.

45. Protect and conserve forest worldwideForests play a critial role in global warming: they store carbon. When forests are burned or cut down, their stored carbon is release into the atmosphere - deforestation now accounts for about 20% of carbon dioxide emissions each year. 46. Consider the impact of your investmentsIf you invest your money, you should consider the impact that your investments and savings will have on global warming. 48. Tell Congress to actThe McCain Lieberman Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act would set a firm limit on carbon dioxide emissions and then use free market incentives to lower costs, promote efficiency and spur innovation. Tell your representative to support it.

49. Make sure your voice is heard!Americans must have a stronger commitment from their government in order to stop global warming and implement solutions and such a commitment won’t come without a dramatic increase in citizen lobbying for new laws with teeth. Get the facts about U.S. politicians and candidates at Project Vote Smart and The League of Conservation Voters. Make sure your voice is heard by voting!

An elderly gent was invited to an old friend's home for dinner one evening. He was impressed by the way his buddy preceded every request to his wife with endearing terms such as: Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, Pumpkin, etc.

The couple had been married almost 70 years and clearly, they were still very much in love. While the wife was in the kitchen, the man leaned over and said to his host, 'I think it's wonderful that, after all these years, you still call your wife those loving pet names.
The old man hung his head. 'I have to tell you the truth,' he said, 'Her name slipped my mind about 10 years ago and I'm scared to death to ask her what it is!' :-)

ఎందుకంటే.. మనం ఎప్పుడూ రిస్క్ తీసుకోం.

ఎవరూ వాడని బాత్రూం అటకమీంచి గ్లాసందుకుంటాం.లటక్కన పెగ్గేసి చటుక్కున మూతి తుడుచుకుంటాం.గ్లాసు కడిగేసి అటకమీద పెట్టేస్తాం.అఫ్‌కోర్స్, బాటిల్ కూడా చెక్కబీరువాలో పెట్టేస్తాం.తాతగారు బోసినవ్వుతో చూస్తారు.వంటింట్లోకి తొంగిచూస్తాను.మా ఆవిడ చపాతీపిండి కలుపుతూటూంది.ఈ చెవిలో సద్దు ఆ చెవిలో పడనివ్వం.ఎందుకంటే.. మనం ఎప్పుడూ రిస్క్ తీసుకోం.

పెగ్-3 మనం మళ్ళా చెక్కబీరువాలోంచి చపాతీ పిండి తీస్తాం.చెక్కబీరువాలో బాత్రూం ప్రత్యక్ష్యం అవుతుంది.బాటిల్ తీసి అటకలో రెండౌన్సులు పోస్తాం.లటక్కన పెగ్గేసి చటుక్కున మూతి ముడుచుకుంటాం.తాతగారు పడీపడీ నవ్వుతూంటాడు.అటకని పిండిమీద పెట్టేసి తాతయ్యని కడీగేసి చెక్కబీరువాలో పెట్టేస్తాం.వంటింట్లోకి తోంగిచూస్తాం.మా ఆవిడ పొయ్యిమీద బాత్రూం పెడుతుంది.ఈ బాటిల్లో సద్దు ఆ బాటిల్లో పడనివ్వం.
ఎందుకంటే, మనం ఎప్పుడూ రిస్క్ తీసుకోం.
నేను: ఏంటే మా శర్మగార్ని గాడిదంటావా, తోలు ఒలిచేస్తాను.
ఆవిడ: ఊరికే గొడవ చెయ్యకుండా వెళ్ళి పడుకోండి.

పెగ్-4 మనం పిండిలోంచి బాటిల్ తీస్తాం.చెక్క బీరువాలో ఓ పెగ్గు కలుపుతాం.బాత్రూం కడిగేసి అటకమీద పెట్టేస్తాం.మా ఆవిడ ఫోటోలోంచి నవ్వుతూ చూస్తుంటే గాంధీ వంట చేస్తూంటాడు.ఈ శర్మ సంగతి ఆ శర్మగాడికి తెలియనివ్వం.ఎందుకంటే..

నేను: ఇంతకీ శర్మగాడి పెళ్ళి ఆ గాడిదతో అయ్యిందా లేదా?
ఆవిడ: నెత్తిమీద బక్కెట్ నీళ్ళు పోసానంటే.. వెళ్ళండి బయటికి.
పెగ్-5 నేను మళ్ళీ కిచెన్‌లోకి వెళ్తాను.నిశ్శబ్దంగా అటకమీద కూర్చుంటాను.డ్రాయింగ్‌రూంలోంచి బాటిళ్ళ శబ్దం వినిపిస్తుంటుంది.నేను లోపలికి తొంగిచూస్తే మా ఆవిడ బాత్రూంలో మందేస్తుంటుంది.వెంటనే లటుక్కున మూతేసి చటుక్కున పెగ్గు తుడుచుకుంటాం.ఈ గాడిద చప్పుడు ఆ గాడిద చెవిలో పడనివ్వం.అఫ్‌కోర్స్, తాతయ్యెప్పుడూ రిస్క్ తీసుకోడు.శర్మ వంట చెయ్యడం పూర్తయ్యేవరకూ మనం ఫోటోలో కూర్చుని మా ఆవిణ్ణి చూసి నవ్వుతుంటాం.ఎందుకంటే, మనం ఎప్పుడూ రిస్క్ తీసుకోం.
