Liverpool: A guide to the city

Britain has so much to offer in terms of culture, history and days out, so why not take advantage of this by taking a city break in one of the most famous cities in the world?

Liverpool is instantly recognised as the home of The Beatles, but behind the musical history of ‘The Fab 4’ lies so much more: sporting venues, magnificent cathedrals, museums, theatres, galleries and concert halls to name but a few things. Many of the activities can be booked on the day; either with a quick phone call or in one of the tourist offices, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what is actually on your doorstep, or if you’re travelling from further afield – what’s on offer in Liverpool.

Below is a guide to city breaks in Liverpool: what to do, where to go, how much it will cost and a mini ‘scouse’ dictionary.

One of the best things about Liverpool is that all of the landmarks are within close proximity of each other, so you won’t spend half of your money on travel to each different attraction. Let’s take a look at what is on offer:

Where to go/what to do in Liverpool
Albert Docks

Home to museums, art galleries, bars, restaurants and tours, the Albert Dock has something for everyone. Just a short walk from the city centre, you will get lost in the history of the city here. There’s The Beatles Story, which tells the story of the band nicknamed “The fab 4” who went on to become the greatest band in the world. Visitors can now ‘live the history’ as there are many interactive areas to discover the lives, culture and history of the Beatles. Costing £12.95 for adults, and £6.50 for children, the Beatles story takes you back to the famous Cavern club and Abbey Road studios, to help you understand the hysteria of “Beatlemania” – a must for any music lover.

Maritime Museum

If music doesn’t float your boat, the Maritime Museum certainly will, where you can learn about the port that was once central to the world’s trade. Hear the tale of the Titanic, and explore the Border and Customs Uncovered exhibition, which features artefacts and stories about protests, war, tax evasion and smuggling – including some odd objects that were used to smuggle contraband into the country. Children can also practise loading cargo on the new “Cargo-a-go-go” game. Entry to the museum is free for everyone.

Situated inside the Maritime Museum, there’s also the International Slavery Museum, discover the history of the slave trade split into 3 sections exploring West Africa, enslavement and the middle passage, and the final section explains the continuing fight for freedom. Temporary exhibitions are often updated in the slavery museum.

Tate Liverpool

Tate Liverpool is the place to go for all you art lovers, the home of 20th century art in the most visited gallery outside London. Hidden away in a converted warehouse as part of the Albert Dock, the Tate has many special events and exhibitions that can all be taken advantage of for free. There is also an on site café to enjoy a tea or coffee overlooking the docks.

The Echo Wheel

For those not scared of heights, get on the Echo Wheel of Liverpool, which at 60 metres high gives passengers the chance to take in the famous skyline with a 360 degree panoramic view in air conditioned capsules from next to the recently constructed Echo Arena. Cost for adults is £6.37, while children’s admission costs £3.90.

The Yellow Duckmarine

Finally, you cannot visit the Albert Dock without experiencing “The Yellow Duckmarine”, an amphibious vehicle that explores the city before driving straight into the Albert Dock with the dramatic “splashdown”. Including live commentary throughout, the ‘Duck’ takes you around the Three Graces, St George’s Hall, the Cathedrals and many other places, before embarking into the water, before finishing the journey outside the Albert Dock buildings. Tickets for adults cost £9.95, whilst for children it is £7.95. During peak periods (such as school holidays) there is an extra £2 charge per ticket.

Liverpool City Centre Breaks

If you’re looking for a place to stay right in the middle of town, then use a price comparison site such as travelsupermarket.com to find one of the many city centre hotels right in the middle of the action. In the week, there are sometimes offers on rooms, such as stay for 2 nights and get a 3rd free, while there may be the possibility of a free room upgrade on quiet nights of the week – just ask at reception.

The city centre has centuries of history and culture in one place. There’s Mathew Street for all the Beatles fans, featuring many bars and clubs playing all the famous hits. For those of you who want more than just music, then check out the World Museum and St George’s Hall, conveniently located a stone’s throw from one another. The museum houses over 1,500 pieces from all corners of the globe, helping to explain Liverpool’s story as a major port. There are different exhibitions all year round, ranging from sports to dinosaur exhibitions, so depending on the time of the year there is always something new and exciting to discover.

St George’s Hall

St George’s Hall is literally across the road from the museum, so cannot be missed. A grade I listed building, this Neo-Classical masterpiece contains concert halls and law courts, along with being home to a 7,000 pipe concert organ. Visit the cells that used to house prisoners awaiting trial, or marvel at the many statues inside the hall, and get a photo of Prince Albert on his horse outside. Admission to the hall is free for everyone.

Shopping in Liverpool

Shopping and Liverpool go hand in hand; Liverpool One has over 160 stores, just round the corner from Church Street which is still home to many well known shopping names. Cavern Walks features designer outlets where celebrities can usually be spotted, whilst there’s also the Metquarter which provides shoppers with designer boutiques to get their threads from, again just minutes away from the main street.

Eating Out in Liverpool

Should you require something to eat, there are hundreds of bars, restaurants and cafes to suit all budgets, featuring foods from all around the world. The newly opened Liverpool One shopping complex has something for every taste, including pizzas, Italian, Indian, Mexican or if you want a bit of everything there’s a ‘world buffet’ so head up to the top floor to enjoy the newest restaurants in town. All menus are on display outside so you’re won’t get a shock when the bill comes, but typically you can expect to pay around £15-20 per head if you are having 3 courses.

Chinatown

At the other end of town and you’ll find yourself in Europe’s oldest Chinatown, which is now much smaller than it used to be, but is still home to many small shops and restaurants. If you’re around for Chinese New Year, then it really is a sight to be seen, the place comes to life in unbelievable fashion with some magnificent costumers featuring lions and dragons on display.

City Centre Nightlife

The city centre has a very busy nightlife, with bars & clubs for literally any style of music; with everything from live bands to ‘scouse house’. Mathew Street has the live bands, which are normally Beatles tributes, or there is concert square off Bold Street, which has 6 clubs in a small square with outdoor seating for everyone. There are many Irish bars in the town centre, however two of the most popular are Flanagan’s and O’Neill’s, which are busy at all times of the day and are worth stopping in for a drink.

The Liverpool Cathedrals

The city’s two cathedrals can also be found within 10 minute’s walk of the city centre, and both within a short distance of each other. Admission is free for you to walk around and take in the breathtaking architecture. Liverpool Cathedral is at one end of Hope Street, facing the Metropolitan Cathedral. After nearly 75 years of construction, the cathedral was opened in 1978, and has survived two world wars. Acting as a centre of worship, the cathedral also offers hospitality events and learning activities.

Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral (also known as Paddy’s Wigwam) is a catholic cathedral at the other end of Hope Street, featuring a round stained glass ceiling which must be taken in on a sunny day to appreciate the workmanship involved in creating this building. There are 4 large bells dedicated to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which can be heard ringing in a chord of A Flat on Sundays, as well as before Evening Prayer.

Theatres

If you want to watch a live show, the recently constructed Echo Arena has seen superstars from all over the world perform as part of their showpiece tours at the venue. There are also a couple of theatres (the Royal Court and the Empire); the Empire often has pantomimes, comedy nights and live shows from mediums and entertainers, whilst the Royal Court is a small venue usually used for intimate music gigs and stand up comedy performances.

Liverpool Football Stadiums

Away from the city centre, if you wish to learn about two of the most well known football teams in the world, head 2 miles out of town to visit the homes of Liverpool and Everton.
Anfield and Goodison Park stadiums have been the venue of many great sporting nights throughout their history. Stadium tours operate daily for both Liverpool & Everton, and last around an hour. Learn the history of two great football establishments which were founded as a result of a dispute between two land owners, and went on to form a passionate rivalry that splits households twice a year as families often have members supporting each side. The stadium tours cost around £15, and a taxi from the city centre should cost around £5, or the following buses: 17, 17C, 17D, 20, 26 and 26C run every 15 minutes from Queen’s square.

As you can tell, there are many different things to do in this historic city, which really have to be experienced to be appreciated.

Transport around Liverpool

The easiest way to get around Liverpool is by using public transport, and the tourist offices offer a “Trio” which allows you to use buses, rail and ferries for a one off fee; which is usually a lot cheaper than paying separately. Each area in Liverpool is split into zones, should you wish to be able to go anywhere, a Trio for a week costs £23.60.

There are many taxi ranks in the city centre, where black cabs wait for fares, and are all metered.

Scouse Dictionary

Finally, below are some sayings that you may not have heard before that you may hear in every day ‘Scouse’ – the local dialect spoken by ‘Scousers’.

Steven Gerrard said “We need to get the Fiorentina loss out of our system quickly, as we have a massive game at Chelsea,
“What we need is to produce a reaction from this defeat at Stamford Bridge.”

Defender Jamie Carragher agreed, saying “We didn’t perform well enough, we know that,
“We were slightly better in the second half, but still not good enough.
“Nothing went to plan. It was a massive game for them, and a massive game for us, but they seemed to be more ready for it from the start.”

2nd October saw Liverpool’s Fernando Torres being awarded the Premier League Player of the Month Award for September, having scored a hat-trick against Hull and five goals in the month, taking his tally for the season to eight and making him top-scorer.
Perhaps surprisingly, this is only the second time that Torres has won the accolade – Torres and his team-mates have scored the most goals in the Premier League so far this 2009/2010 season.

The keeper had spoken out before the victory against Burnley, saying that winning the title this season “is not a realistic objective”.

“I think Pepe was trying to say something that we have spoken about before,” said Benitez.
“We should not think about silverware or titles – just to get three points in the next game and see what happens.”

Reina had told the Guardian in an interview: “There isn’t frustration, there is resignation.
“Maybe it’s time to get realistic and not think about the title but just about winning the next game.”

The 27-year-old Spanish international called for the club’s American co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks to improve Liverpool’s chances by giving manager Benitez more money for players.

“It would be lovely if we found ourselves in an economic position where we can bring in players and build a squad that can compete with other sides.” He said, “But it’s up to the owners to try to bring players in, not us.”

On the 14th September the British Medical Association (BMA) called for an end to alcohol sponsorship of sport.

Happily for Liverpool, Standard Chartered Bank is to become the main sponsor of LFC after signing a four-year deal.

The agreement will end Liverpool’s 17-year association with Carlsberg and begins next July.

It is the club’s largest ever commercial agreement, thought to be worth around £80million over the four years.

Better player news on the15th September, as Liverpool Football Club sign 16-year old Michael Ngoo from Southend.

The striker has had a successful trial period at Anfield, and has now agreed scholarship terms.

“It’s a good deal for us and a great opportunity for Michael,” Southend’s Ricky Duncan told the club’s website.
“The deal could be worth more than £250,000 if he goes on to realise his potential but the initial fee is a lot smaller than that.”

16th September had Rafa Benitez speaking out about the new quota rules levied by the Football Association.

Next season, all top-flight clubs must name at least eight players under 21 that have been trained in either England or Wales in a 25-man squad.

“It may now be difficult to maintain quality. The number of players is not the point, the quality is,” he warned.
“The problem in England is that there is a big gap between the academies and the first team, the reserve league is not filling this gap.”

Liverpool only just meet current Champions League criteria of eight home-grown players in their 28-man European squad.

Liverpool FC 1 – 0 Debreceni VSC
(Kuyt 45+1)

Liverpool began this season’s Champions League campaign with a narrow win over Hungarian champs Debrecen.

A subdued Anfield was host to an uninspiring Liverpool game, with Dirk Kuyt’s goal in first-half stoppage time enough for the win.

Fernando Torres had his shot stopped by Vukasin Poleksic, but the keeper failed to hold onto the ball and Kuyt punished him with the goal.

Liverpool deserved the win having controlled most of the first half, but Debrecen gave the home side a few scares as they stuck to a plan that could well have earned them a point.

But ultimately Benitez’ 300th game in charge was Liverpool’s 100th European victory in this competition.

The starting line-up was the same team that beat Burnley 4-0 at Anfield on Saturday, but the game was a different animal entirely, with skipper Steven Gerrard picking up an early yellow for taking a free-kick too early.

Boss Rafael Benitez conceded that Liverpool had made heavy weather of the match: “We made a lot of chances and just did not take them,
“So we ended up under pressure at the end of the match when we should have been winning comfortably.
“Although we did not score the goals we wanted, we did win and I’m happy.”

With Lyon beating Fiorentina at home in the other Group E match, both Liverpool and Lyon are equal-placed on top.

More business news on the 17th, with co-owner Tom Hicks speaking out over the club’s proposed new £350m stadium, saying that it will be built once the global financial crisis stabilises.

“We’ve spent lots of money and we have a fully designed stadium,” said Hicks.
“We have every permit in place, the council’s approval, everything is done. Certainly it will happen.”

A new stadium in the adjacent Stanley Park is expected to hold 60,000 fans, 15,000 more than Anfield.

Kevin Davies put Bolton ahead after half an hour from a corner, with Liverpool defender Glen Johnson drawing the teams level before half-time.

Immediately after the restart, Tamir Cohen put Bolton back in front, then the game was changed somewhat with Sean Davis sent off for a second yellow on 54 minutes.

Steven Gerrard had already hit the bar before Fernando drew LFC back once more, then Gerrard clinched the three points with less than 10 minutes to go.

Liverpool had lacked any sense of urgency before Davis’ sending off, with Gerrard relatively quiet for the first half, having been a verbal target of Rafael Benitez earlier in the week.

After the game, manager Benitez told the BBC: “All our players wanted to impress and do well. Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, among others, knew they needed to improve.

“We showed we have quality players and they all fought hard to show their improvement.

“We had a lot of possession and were in control for much of the game. To concede two goals like we did is disappointing, but the team hit back and proved their quality.”

Hear skipper Steven Gerrard speaking about his winning goal.

Liverpool FC: played 4, won 2, lost 2, gd +2, points 6, position 7th

The last day of August, and Liverpool’s French goalkeeper Charles Itandje left Anfield for a season-long loan to Greek club Kavala FC.

The 26-year-old has made seven first-team appearances in the last two seasons, but was seen on camera nudging a team-mate during the Hillsborough Memorial Service in April, something for which he expressed his “deep regret”.

The 1st September was the final day of the transfer window, but no further comings or goings were noted at Liverpool Football club.

Instead, news was focused on the fall-out from the opening day’s defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on 16th August.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was charged with improper conduct by the Football Association, following his post-match comments made immediately after the 2-1 defeat.
Upset with officials, he said: ”The decisions were very poor.”

Rafa has until 15 September to officially respond to the charge.

His assistant manager, Sammy Lee, was also charged with improper conduct for his behaviour during the same match at White Hart Lane.

Lee, was sent to the stands for protesting with the fourth official.

Assistant Lee admitted the charge, and was warned about future conduct, and was told that he would have received a stiffer penalty had it not been for an “exemplary” record.

Better news on 9th September, as Reds captain Steven Gerrard got himself a brace on international duty for England in the 5 – 1 defeat of Croatia at Wembley.

Midfielder Gerrard headed home twice, one goal in each half, to help the squad qualify for South Africa 2010.

Liverpool FC’s next match is on Saturday 12th September, against Burnley at Anfield.

But boss Benitez was also furious at referee Phil Dowd’s decision not to award the visitors two penalties, both involving Spurs player Benoit Assou-Ekotto, the first being a challenge on Andriy Voronin and a later handball. “The decisions were very poor,” said the 49-year-old Spaniard. “Everyone could see the first one was a penalty. The second one was handball but we knew it would not be a penalty.” During the match, assistant manager Sammy Lee received a red card from the fourth official for protesting the alleged handball, which only added to Rafa’s ire.
A New Season At Anfield

Liverpool FC’s first game of the 2009 – 2010 Barclays Premier League season is only a day away

, so here is a catch-up of the last two weeks of pre-season news.

After weeks of rumour and speculation, the 5th August saw Xabi Alonso leave Liverpool football club for Real Madrid, the second of Anfield’s players to join the Spanish giants, following full-back Alvaro Arbeloa’s 3.5m switch in July.

The 27-year-old midfielder completed a £30million transfer, although the terms of the deal remain confidential.

Alonso played 210 games for Liverpool, and admitted that he was sad to leave the fanatical Anfield support behind.
Last summer, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez had tried to sell the Spanish international to fund a move for midfielder Gareth Barry (now at Manchester City) from Aston Villa; but Alonso did not want to move at the time, and played a key role in Liverpool’s second-place finish last season.

On Saturday 8th, Liverpool were 2 – 1 losers in the friendly against Atletico Madrid.
Jamie Carragher limped off in the first half, one of a number of injury concerns in the Reds’ defence. Rafa spoke after the Anfield match hinting at possible interest in Hull City’s Michael Turner:

“It’s a very happy day for me. It’s an important step in my career to come to a club like Real Madrid,” said Alonso. “It’s the best opportunity for me to develop as a footballer.”

“I was talking with Hull manager Phil Brown, but I will not talk about figures.”

The following day, 9th August, it was confirmed that Liverpool had signed Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani . The 25-year-old Italian international has joined Liverpool in a five-year deal that is reportedly worth 20m.

“Alberto has a winning mentality and great experience in both Series A and the Champions League.”

Hull City boss Phil Brown confirmed Liverpool’s interest in centre-back Michael Turner on the 10th, but said that he thought the Reds were undervaluing his player:

After pulling out of the England friendly against Holland with an injury, there was better news regarding Steven Gerrard on Wednesday 12th August, with the team hopeful of his fitness for the season’s opener against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

“I don’t think Rafa’s ever had a home game to start the season in all his time at the club,” Gerrard said.

Boss Rafa had targeted the Italian on the previous Wednesday, hours after the Alonso sale was finalised.

Benitez has been linked with a £6million bid for central defender Turner, although it is understood that Hull want to hold out for closer to £12m, as well as Portsmouth’s Sylvain Distin.

“We had to think about players who could make a difference for us,” said Benitez.”He is a very good player on the ball, and hopefully he can produce the sort of passes that we missed last season. Certainly at home, against packed defences when we could only draw important matches.

“Rafa Benitez has an evaluation of Michael and so do we but we are miles apart.”

He has received some treatment to a tight groin and should be well enough to lead his team out at White Hart Lane, the sixth successive campaign opener away from Anfield:

“But I think that if you take a step back and look at it in detail, there are benefits to beginning the season away from home. If you can achieve three points you’ve then got two games to come in front of your own supporters.

“The start to the season’s always crucial because you can build momentum quickly.

“They’re all tough games, but if we could get three points from each of the first three games, then that would be us off to a flier and that will be our intention.”

In better news, however, young academy player Daniel Pacheco has signed a new deal to keep him at Liverpool until 2012. The Spanish youth international has been in the first-team squad during pre-season, although is yet to make his competitive debut.

Question marks hang over the availability of Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel for the trip to Spurs.

So a bright start against Spurs tomorrow will see the away end smiling, and with just over a fortnight left before the transfer window closes, Rafa still has one or two players to complete his new season’s squad.
