Wednesday 3rd February 2010, 1830 - 2100

The British people live on an island surrounded by the sea. The Royal Navy continues to guard against threats to the United Kingdom’s peace and prosperity but only a small part of this activity is ever reported in the news. You may have seen recent reports of Royal Navy ships acting against pirates off the Horn of Africa or the Royal Marines fighting in Afghanistan or Royal Navy sailors catching drug smugglers in the Caribbean and perhaps wondered why such distant events might be important or relevant to you.

The Royal Navy Presentation Team tours the length and breadth of the country each year, explaining the importance and relevance of the Royal Navy within a modern United Kingdom society. We are not a recruiting team; instead we aim to raise the profile, understanding and awareness of the Royal Navy. This is not to recruit you to the front line, but rather to recruit your support for the sailors and marines working tirelessly around the clock and around the globe to safe guard your national interests.

This is your opportunity to get the real story behind the news, where we will address questions such as:

‘What opportunities does the Royal Navy offer for the young people of our community?’

‘How is the Royal Navy evolving to meet the challenges of the future?’

‘What is the Royal Navy doing to defend global trade, protect the supply chain and ensure continuity of the nation’s energy needs?’

‘How is the Royal Navy defending British interests worldwide and how can the local community support our sailors and marines?’

Our fast moving multi-media presentation lasts about 30 minutes. It outlines UK Defence policy and the considerable contribution being made to tri-service and multi-national operations by an efficient, flexible, modern Royal Navy. We show you how your Navy operates right across the spectrum of missions from counter-narcotics to anti-terrorism, from defence diplomacy to disaster relief, and from peacekeeping through crisis management all the way up to high intensity conflict if necessary. We also look at the future of the Navy as our plans evolve. Our aim is to demonstrate that the Royal Navy provides a vital and cost effective service to the nation, and will continue to do so.

As well as being informative, the occasion is designed to be entertaining and thought provoking. We encourage lively debate on any topical issue during the question and answer session after the presentation, when you are welcome to ask whatever you want, with no question left unanswered.

Both before and afterwards, drinks and light refreshments will be served in comfortable surroundings where you can meet and talk informally to the members of the team, and to various other Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel.

The event takes place at The Liner Hotel, Lord Nelson Street, Liverpool, L3 4QB on Wednesday 3rd February 2010. The evening starts at 1830 and will be complete by 2100.

We would be delighted to meet you on the evening, and you are also welcome to bring along any family, friends, colleagues or anybody else who would wish to come.

Attendance is FREE, however we do need to know how many people are coming in advance, therefore we would be most grateful if you could let us know if you, and any other guests, are coming by Thursday 29 October 2009. Please either call us on 020 8833 8020, drop us an email on rnpt@gtnet.gov.uk, look us up on ‘facebook’, or register your place on-line at http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-events/public-presentations/royal-navy-presentation-team/your-place-on-the-guest-list/

The event is organised by Faiths4Change, a joint-partnership organisation that engages with all faith communities, local people and agencies to transform communities through environmental action.

It will include guided cycle rides around the park (participants can bring their own bike or they will be available to hire on the day), and a chance to learn more about getting into cycling.

The “Try Out Bike Roadshow” will be coming especially to Liverpool from York, bringing an array of different bikes for adults and children to try out. Visitors will be greeted by a mega bike at the Aviary Café in Sefton Park at 12pm and the event will continue at the tennis courts until 3pm.

Visitors can cycle from Sefton Park, or take a pedi cab, to an interfaith service at the Sikh Gurdwara on Wellington Road in Wavertree at 12.30 and look inside two beautiful churches, St Agnes’ and St Clare’s from 2pm.

A cycle mechanic from Cycling Solutions will also be around to give people’s bikes a health check as well as Travelwise and Merseyside Cycle campaign who can advise on cycling initiatives in the local area. Bike hire will be available through local bike store and cycle hire, Bike Beat.

Annie Merry, from Faiths4Change, said, “This is a great opportunity for people of all ages to come and experience the fun and sociable side of cycling, as well as get some tips on reducing their carbon footprint and improving their health. Everyone is welcome to come along, and we hope that people of many different faiths will join together for what promises to be a fantastic day.”

Participants can get a free ticket for the Tryout Bike Roadshow and a discount on bike hire by calling Helen Dawson at Faiths4Change on 0151 705 2108 or email helen.dawson@liverpool.anglican.org

The current financial climate, or ‘credit crunch’, may well be a direct result of a mismanaged economy however that is of little consequence when you’re trying to keep a business roof over your head and the creditors from the door.

Chamber members Black Box Creative Communities CIC Ltd are looking for expressions of interest for a ‘creative’ solution to the continued existence of businesses who are ‘feeling the pinch’

Black Box currently occupies a 3, 300 sq ft site in a quarter of an acre of land behind Brougham Terrace, West Derby Road.

Moving into the premises in November 2007, Liverpool’s award winning creative and performing arts company made a commitment to letting part of the property. The financial downturn now makes that commitment an even more attractive proposition for a business who would like to explore a ‘cost effective solution’ to sustainability.

With state of the art CCTV, security and alarm systems; all to high spec and secure free parking for around 24 vehicles the premises offers numerous business benefits and Black Box invites expressions of interest.

As well as the obvious cost reduction in shared business costs, Black Box feels there are a number of other benefits:

Expansion / growth of business

Opportunity to make new business contacts

Organise networking events together

Work together on joint business enterprises

Free parking = more convenient for customers

Develop impulse purchases of your products and services

Increases the chance that customers / clients will choose to visit you rather than your competitors

Develop stronger relationships within the local business community

Raise profile with customers

Raise profile in the local area

Make one business visible to customers visiting your ‘partner’ business

Promotional benefits

Cover in emergency situations

To see who, what and where The Black Box are visit www.blackboxmerseyside.co.uk

Expressions of interest should be made via email to Gillian Stokes at admin@blackboxmerseyside.co.uk or telephone 07775 968 093

During the current phase of economic downturn, sustainable waste management practices and recycling may be the last items on most business agendas. However, a new initiative supported by the Environment Agency and Liverpool City Council aims to help.

There are a number of benefits for the business community in implementing sustainable waste management practices, and there is also a legal requirement to properly contain and dispose of commercial waste under Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The benefits of sustainable waste management practices include a clean environment surrounding business premises, compliance with legislation and the potential of making the business more attractive to customers. It is becoming increasingly important that businesses are seen as responsible and environmentally aware members of the local community.

There are also financial incentives for those businesses looking to reduce the amounts they send to landfill and to increase the amount of materials recycled. These include a reduction in the costs of land-filling residual waste and a potential income stream from the materials sent for recycling.

Nick Hopwood, Environment Manager for the Environment Agency said:

“Businesses across the city need to find the most environmentally sound and cost effective ways of achieving sustainable waste management to remain competitive in the current economic climate. The ‘Make Waste Your Business’ project offers education and advice on commercial waste disposal and provide links to other sources of information to help businesses make an informed choice about sustainable waste management and recycling. We really hope businesses in Liverpool will take advantage of this service during Year of the Environment. ”

They are keen to raise awareness of their services and hopefuuly get businesses to adopt them as their corporate sponsored charity for 2010. They are especially interested in the possibility of working with businesses who also might be celebrating 50 years activity (although this isn’t necessary).

Marie Curie Cancer Care relies heavily on support from local people/companies to enable them to maintain their vital services to local people with cancer.

It costs more than £4.7 million a year to run the Marie Curie Hospice Liverpool, with less than 50% coming from the NHS, the rest being dependent on fundraising. The hospice provides specialist medical and nursing care, with the expert help of multi-disciplined healthcare professionals, to over 1,120 local cancer patients each year. This care is provided through In-patient, Out-patient and Day Care services, and a more recently developed community outreach service, giving more people affected by cancer access to Marie Curie Services.

They focus on providing the best possible quality of life for people with cancer and all services are provided free of charge to patients and their families.

If you think you could help, in any way, please contact: Colette.Byrne@mariecurie.org.uk
