Dear Sir/Madam,

I have been looking for information on Liverpool's coastline before the construction of Jesse Hartley's docks - in order to study the development and reclamation of land. I have found old, drawn maps but cannot relate them back to the present day streets/urban situation. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can go about finding accurate information about the development of land along Liverpool's coastline?

Thanks very much in advance.

Ting

Hello,

I wonder if you can help me. While doing some genealogy I found one of my relatives living at the above address on the 1891 census, but it is a very strange entry. There are 70 men and 3 boys living at this address, but there appears to be no-one in charge (no head) and everyone seems to be of working age with many different jobs represented. It seems too small to be a workhouse. It seems to be more like a working man’s hostel. My relative is a married man away from his family at the time. Any ideas what it was?

I know most of Cazneau St. was demolished to make way for an interchange.

I have tried the Liverpool Records Office, but they cannot help, so I am hoping you can, and if not, can you suggest where I might try next?

Thank you

John Waller jawaller@dccnet.com

There was a chapel/church, situated in Moss St quite near the junction with London Road/Prescot Street.
It backed onto Epworth Street, where I lived as a child 1948-1957.

We knew it as the old Methodist building, and as kids did shortly after the war we used the place as a playground.

I remember finding Hymn books which were definitely not of the catholic type. I also remember the building and yard being used for the storage of new (50′s) fireplaces.

Frankie Vaughan lived over the road in Devon Street.
Hello

I would like if you can give some tips about how to find iformation about the old Mill Road Hospital in the 1870ties

The reason is this I am researching the relatives of the Swedish actress Emilie Högqvist 1812-1846

Hjalmar Fransson Högqvist 1840-1874 feb 15 in Mill Road Hospital

Hjalmar was born 1839 in Hamburg as the son of the famous Swedish actress Emilie Högqvist 1812-1846 and the Swedish crown prince Oscar (later king Oscar I) 1799-1859 )

Hjalmar spend his early childhood in Stockholm was after his mothers death in 1846 raised in Hamburg with his brother Max Högqvist 1840-1872 and his half sister Tecla Högvist 1833- (daughter of temile Högqvist and the british diplomat John Arthur douglas Bloomfield.(2nd baron Bloomfield)

In the late 1850thies he came back to Sweden and in the beginning of the 1860thies he settled In a Manour house in the province of Västergötland

In 1863 he married Emile Amalia Hafström 1838- ca 1910 from a wealthy Gothenburg family

They had 2 daughters

Hjalmar apparently squandered his fortune and

Around 1867 the family had to leave the manor and moved to Gothenburg. For a few yesrs Hjalmar worked in the postal services as postal inspector but later he ecame employed by the Wilson line-

A note in the Death records in the churchrecords for the familys home parish in Gothenburg says that Hjalmar Högqvist died 1874 feb 15 at “Mill road Hospital” according to a letter of 1874 march 31 from doctor called Alex Dunbar . There may have been severel Millroad Hospitals in England by that time but since Hjalmar was employed by a shipping line the hospital in Liverpool may be the most likely. If Hjalmar indeed died in a workhouse hospital he seems to have fallen on bad times indeed.

Are there any records ,pictures or information from the hospital about that time wich can give any information about him and the circumstances aurrounding his death ?

Kind regards from

Anna-Karin Schander

Växjö

Sweden

I have found a certificate of my grandmother from 1945 for the Postal and Telegraph Censorship Department thanking her for her efforts with them. Do you have any info on this? Or can you reccomend any publications or books that would include the subject. I would love to find out exactly what she did. I believe it was based in Aintree.
Thank you for your time
I am trying to trace a Gentlemans Barber Shop that existed in Hackins Hey off Dale Street Liverpool from around 1945 to when the street was redevoloped in the late 60s early 70s. It was on the same side of the road as Ye Hole in Wall pub but about halfway up. The man who ran it was my Grandfather Charles Quick. It was there at a similar time as Rex Makin Solicitors started in the same street. Any info about the shop including its name would be great.

thanks

Hello,
my parents worked for the Livepool bakers Sayers for many years and I would be very interested in learning something about the history of the business. I would be very grateful if you could please provide any information.

I hope you can advise me where to find any info and photos.

I am currently writing the story about my ggg g/father, Prof Ira Hirst from his UK beginnings to the Port of Natal in South Africa.

He worked for the Liverpool Town Council from 1856 to 1864 but not sure as what but must have been related to his profession as a Music Professor. The Liverpool Mercury classified ads also shows him as choir master, organist and conductor for St George's Church as well a music teacher. He resigned owing to 'bad health' in 1864 and moved his young family to Natal in SA where he pioneered the import of musical instruments and orchestras in Natal. He died at the early age of 49 in SA.

I have hit a wall in trying to find out more info about music in Liverpool at the time and would love to find old photos and records which would include him.

I thank you in advance for any info you can supply me.

I'm doing a piece of research into John Lennon - does anyone know anything of Gladstone House - It was near to Strawberry Fields and (was in John Lennon's time, living at home in Mather Av) used as a boys reformatory (secured school).
Hi – I realise you are not a family history site but – my Grandfather (William (Walter) Collings was born at 136 Towson street, Everton (1899). His father was a fireman at the flour mills.

I tried the Liverpool City Online archives but they seem to be off line.

I wondered if anyone knew the sort of housing in Towson street at that time – I had thought terraced houses but I suppose it could be tenement.

I’ve seen mention of online photos of Towson Street – but not managed to find any!

Be grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

Hello

I am researching my ancestor Braithwaite Poole who was listed as a Railway Manager on the 1851 census and lived in Prescott Rd, West Derby. I was wanting to find out more about him (I live in Australia). I have found on the internet some books authored by a Braithwaite Poole written about Liverpool and it's commerce. I wanted to confirm if this is the same person or not. Do you have any suggestions as to who I can contact about him?

Many years ago I appeared in the play “The Man Who Came To Dinner” which was performed in a Theatre over Crane’s Piano Shop in Liverpool. Does the Theatre still exist please?

Sir ,
All information I can find relating to the "Shaw Street" synagogue tell of the building's origin as a Wesleyan chapel. This has me puzzled for I am unable to find a Wesleyan chapel in Shaw street just prior to 1908, when the chapel was supposedly converted to a synagogue. The only record I can find of a Wesleyan chapel in the close vicinity is in Moss Street, the southerly continuation of Shaw Street, where an early Georgian style building existed in the 19th century.

Can anyone help me locate this building, was it Shaw Street or Moss Street??
