I am shocked by the nomination but thrilled to be mentioned in the same breath as the other honorees; men I admire and support their ongoing contributions to community and service.

Rahim is best known for starting the D.C. based non-profit organization, Al Sura. Al Sura’s mission is to train a new generation of HIV/AIDS activists to become advocates within their community. The organization also supports and publishes research papers on HIV/AIDS, seeks to increase funding for HIV research and unites ethnic/racial minority groups with allies to end HIV/AIDS.

"Jay Rome" is a community activist and volunteer at heart. He has been on the scene for years volunteering and supporting many organizations such as Georgia Equality, Human Rights Campaign, Equality Federation, Lambda Legal and Delta's Volunteer Network to name a few. He is best known for starting the "For Couples Only" networking group which is a positive, supportive group for those in committed relationships for discussions, retreats, events, vacations, networking, etc...working together to support & sustain SGL Couples.

Anthony is a performance poet, community activist and recognized trailblazer of the LGBT Music Scene. He has worked on the front lines of HIV/STI Prevention for Atlanta with a extremely heavy focus on MSM Communities.

Darnell is an educator, writer, mentor, nationally recognized speaker and diversity trainer among other things. He is better known for his non-profit organization "You Belong", which is a social enterprise that seeks to encourage inclusion through the provision of innovative youth development programs, training and consulting services, and diversity initiatives.

Lonnell is best known for his webseries “Pillow Talk”, which highlights the Movers and Shakers of the LGBT community through candid interviews, all while lying in their bed. How else can you have “Pillow Talk”, right? The ground breaking series can be found on his site3lwtv.com. Lonnell is known to be the “Oprah” of the LGBT community and will never fail to remind you to “Stand In Your Light”!

The Gentlemen's Ball is one of my favorite galas and I always greet the event with excited anticipation...this year even more so! The Ball occurs December 7, 2014 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown Atlanta.

The Foundation is a non profit organization dedicated to strengthening the quality of life, leadership ability and mental & physical health of primarily minority LGBTQ individuals. Forgiveness is a powerful tool to have in your spiritual arsenal. Amy Baumgardner's story is proof positive of how mighty a tool for healing forgiveness is. She continues to demonstrate its power and her book, From This Day Forward, is a must! Though we correspond regularly she has not idea how her story encourages me.

Personally I've been doing forgiveness work over the past year. In fact, I feel I'm in a pretty good place with it. Of course whenever we have these feelings, life always presents an opportunity to practice what we preach.

Spiritual leader, Iyanla Vanzant announced she was conducting a six week e-course on Forgiveness. I've supported her recent endeavors but didn't think I needed this particular course. As soon as my ego began to rest comfortably in this arrogance, I came across some activity of a former friend who's betrayal I was sure I long ago let go. This individual's actions served as a trigger..I immediately realized I had much more work to do. Admittedly, I was in resistance...I was not trying to hear anything about forgiving this person. NOTHING. I entertained this for a few moments, then acknowledged that more work was still needed. Within minutes of this surrender, Iyanla Vanzant reached out to me personally to encourage me to take the class! I signed up and one of the motivating factors was the work I saw her do with Amy Baumgardner on an episode of Oprah's Life Class.

Amy Baumgardner had a unique opportunity to share her story with the world when she was a guest on Oprah's "Lifeclass,” working with the dynamic and confrontational life coach, Iyanla Vanzant. On a segment focused on overcoming guilt, she shared her two-year struggle with alcohol, its horrendous effect on her marriage, and living with the crippling guilt that followed a car accident that left her five-year-old daughter in critical condition.

Since then, with her husband Matt, she has written From This Day Forward: A Love Story of Hope, Faith and Forgiveness, in which she bares the details of her struggle, her newfound sobriety, and the rebuilding of a marriage that was also near death.

Anyone who follows my Twitter, Instagram or Facebook platforms knows....Oprah's The Life You Want Tour is the highlight of the season! This two day event is a game changer. If you are truly ready to do the work, Oprah and her trailblazers give us tools for manifesting the life of our dreams. During the Houston tour stop, Oprah gave my friends and me quite the surprise when she photo bombed our pic (see photo above)!

After chatting and taking pics with Lady O, my friends, Charles and Ken, & I stepped into another room where we ran into Oprah's make up maestro, Mr. Derrick Rutledge. We caught up with him, sharing laughs and love. Preparing to leave the VIP lounge Ken suggests we take an "ussie." We squeeze into the frame then look to the right of the iPhone where the camera is located. It was then Oprah snuck into the shot...Charles was the only one who noticed, thus his facial expression. I was not aware until Ken showed the pic to us for photo approval. LOL I STILL did not see Oprah, even after we snapped the photo. She'd already disappeared into the next room, where I saw her again a few minutes later. Such a humble, beautiful spirit....'I love me some HER'!

What do I love most about the tour? While the highlights are too great in number to mention in their entirety, I would have to say, seeing Oprah basking in her element has to be what I love most. This is not just an event...The Life You Want Tour is a large classroom where Oprah's passion for teaching is completely evident.

There are two stops remaining, Seattle and San Jose. The Life You Want Tour is not to be missed!

Iyanla Vanzant is a healer. Anyone who spends just a moment in her presence knows this. Her show Iyanla: Fix My Life, on the Oprah Winfrey Network, is one of my favorite shows on television. Viewers of the show know that she can peel the layers and expose the root of one's pain, unlike any other. Her latest book, Forgiveness, is a powerful tool which teaches us to forgive everyone for everything. On October 26, Iyanla takes it a step further as she teaches an online ecourse on what forgiveness is, what it is not, and how to utilize it to step boldly into the life you want and deserve.

Ms. Vanzant reached out to me on Twitter and allowed me to preview a couple of the lessons. I was blown away. The lessons made me uncomfortable and if you know Iyanla, you know that's a good thing. It means I have work to do!

I'm looking forward to this class and truly applying forgiveness in all areas of my life where its needed. I hope you'll join me in this interactive experience with Iyanla Vanzant!

I'm so excited about this production! For those of you unfamiliar, B-Boy Blues The Play is based on the B-Boy Blues novel by James Earl Hardy. This book changed my life! It was the very first time I'd seen anything in print which truly reflected MY world. Everything I'd seen up to that point told me that who I was was wrong, an abomination and other 'fuckery.' As an African-American, same gender loving male, B-Boy Blues taught me not only was I not alone, but that despite what ignorance prevailed amongst the masses, my love was deep, emotional, passionate and beautiful! There was and IS nothing wrong or different about it. LOVE IS LOVE.

On August 2, 2014 the stage play adaptation of B-Boy hits the stage at Atlanta's Balzer Theater @ Herren's. I can't wait! There will be a Q&A session with the cast immediately following the show, hosted by yours truly! The buzz surrounding the show continues to heighten and I'm excited to for you to experience it. There are several ways you can support the production. Every dollar counts. Our stories only gain momentum when we SUPPORT them. All forms of encouragement are appreciated, but a dollar goes further than a like on Facebook....IJS.

Yesterday, my Twitter bud Oprah Winfrey celebrated her 60th birthday! I lost count long ago of the requests I received to be my "plus 1" to her highly anticipated birthday blowout. I'm not sure where folk got this erroneous information, but it was flattering to say the least. I'm thrilled that Ms. Winfrey spent her birthday, HER WAY! She wanted a quaint day of quiet reflection at home and that's exactly what she got.

It's an honor to watch people share accolades from near and far. The global scope of her integrity, inspiration and passion never cease to amaze! It comes as no surprise that she is on the world's radar. It is an honor for me to be on hers.

“When's the next Gentlemen's Ball?” - An open letter to YOU.    Everyone keeps asking us, "What's the date of the next Gentlemen's Ball?" and in the interest of being totally transparent with you, the honest answer is simple:   We don’t know.  We are elated to hear that so many of you are looking forward to the 2014 festivities, but harbor an equal amount of anxiety about it as well.  As you may or may not know, The Gentlemen's Ball is an extremely expensive event to produce and ticket sales only cover about half of the total cost so what it really boils down to is the need for increased monetary support. 

Let’s play the numbers game.  The first year it cost us about $50k to produce the ball.  We received about $25k in ticket sales and sponsorships and $25k was our own investment (which we expected). The second year we upped the ante; it cost us approximately $65k.  We received about $50k in ticket sales and sponsorships and $15k was our personal investment (although our goal was to just break even).  Based on the numbers, we experienced tremendous growth over the course of the year but ultimately ended up in the RED.  Unfortunately, that can’t happen again.  

The Gentlemen’s Ball’s mission is to raise awareness and most importantly, MONEY, for various non-profit organizations that support the LGBT Youth who continue to endure the physical violence, mental anguish and gut wrenching shame that the overwhelming majority of us experienced while growing up and continue to battle.  We also aim to celebrate the outstanding men in the black LGBT community who have overcome those adverse odds and can now stand tall in their truth.  This event is one that is very near and dear to our hearts. In fact, it is more than an event, it is a MOVEMENT! We are very proud of the work that we have done over the course of the last two years and endeavor to continue that work with more dynamic initiatives in the future.  

This movement is bigger than any one person or any one company.  It’s about community.  We know that many of you share the same passion for equality and unity that we do so we ask that you stand in this fight with us - together.  For far too long, black gay men have been marginalized; bullied into a corner of shame and self-hate. The Gentlemen's Ball is a vessel that is here to proclaim “NO MORE”! NO MORE will be humiliated, brow beaten, and physically attacked because of who we are. NO MORE will we be shackled by the debasing labels of queen or DL or faggot or sissy.  NO MORE will we allow the belief that we are impulsive, sexual, disease-spreading creatures to plague the minds of the masses.  We have a message for society; one that is rooted in truth. There is more to us than what is currently portrayed in the media.  We are proud, productive, dynamic, educated, giving men in this society.  We teach your kids, prescribe your medicine, fight for you in court, sell your houses, diagnose your sicknesses, and even lobby for your rights in the political arena.  We support you in too many ways to name and it’s time we get that support in return.  

In order to consistently produce the caliber event that you have come to expect from us, we need more sponsorship dollars!  PERIOD. Millions and millions of dollars are given away each year by large corporations in the form of grants.  Each year we apply and are either denied or outright ignored.  The time has come for more corporations and businesses and PEOPLE to take stock in the black gay community; to invest in us as much as we invest in them. We spend money just like everyone else and we deserve the reciprocal support.

We can’t end this letter without addressing the lack of support in our very own community.  Atlanta is BLACK AND GAY AS HELL!  We SHOULD NOT face these types of challenges with such a strong presence.  Why don’t we support each other?  Don Lemon, Mayor Kasim Reed, Senator John Lewis, to name a few, have all been asked to support The Gentlemen’s Ball by JUST SHOWING UP, but they have all declined.  We even tried to PAY Don Lemon to host one year but our request fell on deaf ears.  What are they all afraid of?  Why won’t they support US but will run to similar events held in the White gay community?  Are we not good enough for them?  We are perplexed.  

This is where we need your help. Many have suggested we setup a GoFundMe account or something of the like, but we say no. We believe our tickets are priced appropriately and that payment constitutes your monetary contribution as an attendee. It’s time for the businesses and corporations in our own backyard like Coca-Cola, Home Depot, Delta, and Suntrust Bank to support the black LGBT community on a larger scale just as they support our white counterparts. It’s also time that our community leaders stand up and recognize us!  If you share our passion, believe in our movement and demand the respect and support from mainstream society, share this post, forward it to potential sponsors, tweet about it, talk about it, send it to a friend that could help.  All that we ask is for you to simply do anything you can to get the word out.

Last night I had the pleasure of experiencing "Choir Boy," the provocatively poignant play by Tarell Alvin McCraney, a MacArthur Foundation "Genius"grant recipient. A coming of age story about a different kind of boy, this play chronicles a powerful journey many of us know all too well; yet one we rarely see brought to the stage with such grace and zeal.

The talented cast bring such vibrancy to each of the characters. The vocal performances are ON POINT. Its well worth the ticket price. Follow Pharus' strength & struggles as he navigates living his truth amidst the often unwelcoming testosterone charged climate at Charles R Drew Prep School for Boys.

Set aside funds for "Choir Boy" this week. If your budget is limited and you have to choose between tipping your favorite stripper or seeing this play...choose the play and tip Big Daddy next week! Words cannot explain how touched I was to receive so many well wishes from every corner of the globe yesterday on my birthday! I am STILL going through many of your messages! I did my best to compose a short video. My day began in Chicago and concluded in Miami. It couldn't have been more perfect. I am so blessed and grateful. Recently, I had the chance see my friend Patrik Ian Polk in Atlanta. Patrik created, wrote, directed and produced the groundbreaking films, "Punks," and "Noah's Arc." His follow up feature film, "The Skinn," a fun, educational glimpse into the lives of some African American Same Gender Loving men, instantly became a favorite. I've long been a fan and friend of this accomplished filmmaker.

Patrik is currently shooting his new film, "Blackbird" on location in Atlanta! Catching up with him is always a joy...and an opportunity to get 'the skinny' on what's really going on with his projects. In "Blackbird" he introduces new talent as well as brings on some acting veterans. It's amazing to witness him work. Such an exciting time, I promise you, "Blackbird" looks to be his strongest work yet. More details to come.
