You really can’t go wrong with hummus. It can be made in a cinch, is tasty and full of protein! I love including ingredients like raw garlic which is immune-boosting and tahini sesame paste which is full of calcium.

My all-time favorite hummus recipe is from Rachael Ray. The recipe is a great blend of flavors. With the “help” of my 4-yr old son, we blend everything all up in the food processor, and then both dip our spoons in for a tasting. His favorite part is instructing me on which ingredients to add more of to tweak the taste a bit more. It’s probably a little different every time, but that’s the fun of it!

Freezes Well!
We always make a double batch and then freeze it in 1 cup portions to pull out in a snap. It’s great to spread on a pita, wrap or rice crackers. Enjoy with veggies for lunch or an appetizer for sharing. Even offer to kids as a great lunch box meal in a sandwich or as a dip.

Cost-Effective Counts!
If you normally buy hummus rather than making your own, give this recipe a try. It’s super easy and way more cost-effective than buying it at the store. Like I said, pop the leftovers in the freezer and you’re good to go next time you’re invited to a friend’s for dinner and asked to bring the hors d’oeuvres!

Spring has sprung, the grass has riz… now what?

Spring is the time to peel off our woolly socks, dust off our flip flops and dream about our fabulous selves lounging in the warm weather. But if you’re anything like me, this time last year my winter love-handles were not squeezing into my summer wardrobe and something had to be done about it!

I felt crummy about the way my clothes fit, got irritated at silly things, had trouble sleeping and had achy joints – just plain Blah. There were more days in my week than not, that I felt this way. Even with “eating right” and exercise every day, I wasn’t seeing any results. I never really felt like I fully understood the causes and effects of food on my body. I wanted to feel slimmer, healthier, less stressed, well rested and just plain happy!

Decided To Make A Change
I decided to go to an Open House at Highway to Health to congratulate my friend Roslyn Gordon on her move to the new studio on Mainway in Burlington. That very day, I joined the 6-week Weight Loss Series which was beginning the following day!

I’ve seen more than just weight loss results after completing this series. I feel fantastic! The lessons I learned in those six weeks have changed how our family eats, feels and enjoys each other for the better in many ways.

Step-By-Step Approach To Weight Loss & Nutrition
This is why I am so proud and pleased to be able to work as a Facilitator of the series now! At the H2H Weight Loss Series we will guide you through a step-by-step approach to weight loss and nutrition while being supported individually to help you meet your goals. Over the course of the program, you will learn how to lose 15-25 lbs and feel confident and better than ever. You deserve to feel totally fantastic!

Our next series begins Tuesday April 24 at 8:30 pm!
Join us for our next series beginning Tuesday April 24 at 8:30pm in Oakville. Be sure to register by March 23 to qualify for the early-bird special $109 (reg. $169). We’ll also be announcing our late Spring sessions in the coming weeks. Watch our Weight Loss Series page for details.

Sore throats are the worst! At the first signs of a throat irritation, give this easy home remedy a gargle.

Even when symptoms are at their peak and it feels like you are swallowing razor blades, this remedy offers almost immediate relief! Cayenne pepper is one of my favorite go-to spices for a variety of tinctures and remedies. Not only does it rock the sore throat relief club, but there is also evidence that it can help to help prevent heart disease, arthritis, and even ease digestion, regulate blood pressure, among many other benefits.

Give this a gargle:

sprinkle of Cayenne pepper

water

Add a sprinkle of Cayenne pepper in a glass of water (we find this even more effective than salt water). Repeat several times throughout the day and by next day you will actually be able to swallow without wincing!

For kids, sprinkle a bit of Cayenne pepper in a small glass of orange juice and have them drink it with a straw. The Cayenne will get to the back of their throat without overwhelming them with spice.

Like this remedy? You might also enjoy my post about a hot, natural and flavourful drink for an immune boosting tasty tea with Cayenne pepper. It’s a great soothing drink to relieve cold and cough symptoms.

On a glorious spring-like days where I’d rather be out playing in the yard than cooking over a hot stove, I love to prepare this light and tasty pasta dish. Brown rice pasta is a great alternative to white or whole wheat pastas & it’s a perfect gluten-free choice! We enjoy the Bulk Barn brand and often stock up when it’s on sale.

This recipe is super fast to prepare so it is one of those easy go-to recipes on a busy weekday evening and is great as a lunch the next day served cold. Tonight for example, I grabbed Tuna from the pantry and whatever veggies I had in the fridge to whip up a tasty dinner.

Brown Rice Pasta with Tuna & Veggies

4 cups Brown Rice Pasta Spirals or Macaroni Elbows

drizzle of Olive Oil

2 cans Tuna, drained

1 tsp McCormick No Salt Added Citrus & Pepper Seasoning

1/4 cup Mayonnaise

1 tbsp Dijon Mustard

1/2 Cucumber, chopped

1/2 Red Pepper, chopped

2 Green Onions, chopped

In a large covered pot, bring water to a boil.

Add Brown Rice Pasta and cook, uncovered, stirring occasionally about 8 minutes or until al dente.

Rinse with cold water and drain well.

Return pasta to pot and drizzle with a bit of Olive Oil to prevent it from sticking together.

In a separate bowl combine Tuna, McCormick Citrus & Pepper Seasoning, Mayonnaise, Dijon Mustard and stir.

Add to pot with Brown Rice Pasta and combine with Cucumber, Red Pepper, Green Onion and enjoy!

Serves: 4

We held our final class this week for our first Oakville H2H Weight Loss Series and WOW, our class is like a totally different group of people now! When we embarked on this journey into the overwhelming world of nutrition, digestion and weight loss, our group greeted us with skeptical guarded first impressions. Out of our group of 11 participants, each came from different backgrounds with varying habits, influences and lifestyles but all were tied together by the common thread that each one was there with the same goal in mind. A healthier approach to eating and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

The H2H Journey

I thought I’d share with you some of my personal observations into this six week journey. After all, I’d been a client of the H2H Weight Loss Series before, but had not experienced it from the other side of the table along side my friend and Registered Nutritionist, Roslyn Gordon, in a cooperative effort in my new role as a Facilitator of the program.

With week one came a lot of information to digest and the philosophy of the program was introduced to our class. Many were thinking, “What’s the catch?”. “Am I going to have to live on carrot sticks and celery for the next six weeks?”. But that’s not the case at all. Our group may have left our week one meeting feeling skeptical, but they all came back on week two already seeing positive changes in how they were feeling!

I Have To Eat More???

As the weeks went on, more goals were introduced and more food was added in. A common statement that became a running gag was, “What? You’re telling me I have to eat MORE food?” Ha ha! Imagine that, a weight-loss program where our clients are complaining about having to eat more!

Weeks 3 and 4 were my favorite weeks to observe. By this point clients are seeing significant changes in the way their clothes are fitting and are feeling more clear-headed and have more energy. We love all the feedback from clients at this stage as they share tips on how they have adapted the program to fit into their own lives. They also begin to share some insights into how the program is allowing them to recognize the cues that their body is giving them to realize any food intolerance’s or digestive issues.

Ongoing Support & Motivation

As the program winds down in the homestretch for weeks 5 and 6, I saw how essential it was to continue to offer support and motivation to our clients. Weight loss is not consistent and we all come from different backgrounds with different digestive histories. Along with introducing the final directions to the program road map, the main message we continued to deliver was to remember how great everyone was feeling! Consistency is key and this is not the time to turn into a negative-Nancy. We can be so critical of ourselves and that is why having moral support in a journey like this is so essential. I remember when I was on program, I had moments of discouragement at this point of the program too. But look at me now… well 20lbs less of me that is

Fantastic Results Across The Board & 100% Satisfaction!

I am pleased to announce that as of our final meeting this week in Oakville, 100% of our clients lost weight & report feeling fantastic!

I’m also pleased to report that in our confidential, end of class survey, all participants said they either “Agreed” or “Totally Agreed” to the following statements:

The weekly meetings were informative and motivational.

The information was presented in a way that is easy to follow.

I felt supported.

I feel confident with the information that I have learned to continue following my goals.

When asked if they would register for future H2H programs and/or recommend the H2H Series to their friends or families, everyone responded with a resounding YES!! How’s that for an amazing endorsement?!

Next Series starts Sunday March 4! Late Spring Series will be Announced Soon

Our next Oakville H2H Weight Loss Series begins Sunday March 4 at 11am – Join Us!

We’ll also be announcing our late Spring sessions in the coming weeks. Watch our Weight Loss Series page for details.

I hope you’ll join us at an upcoming Series!

Ear infections are so common with children (my eldest son included). Since I discovered this easy home remedy for treating ear infections, we have not filled a single prescription for antibiotics since 2004. To keep kids distracted while the drops do their job, we put on a favorite TV show. For my guy, if we only treat the affected ear, he’s sure to end up with an infection in the other one the day after, so we always treat both. In any case, we often find within a day or so the pain goes away, just be sure to follow-up with your doctor to make sure it’s all clear.

Fast, Simple Ear Ache Remedy

5-10 drops of Tea Tree Oil

1 Tbsp of Olive Oil.

Fill ear canal and wait 5-10 minutes for each ear. Try treatment twice daily for 4-5 days. Follow-up with a Doctor’s visit to ensure the infection is gone.

Are ear infections a recurring issue?

If ear infections are a reoccurring ailment, read up on my experience concerning food aversions and their possible connection to ear aches/infections in My Personal Journey Into Natural Remedies.

So next time you feel that cold coming on (or if it’s arrived in full force), skip the medicine laced alternatives & mix up the following recipe in hot water and enjoy!

1 tsp honey

lemon wedge

garlic clove, sliced

slice of fresh ginger

sprinkle of Cayenne pepper

For an added immune-boostig kick, eat the garlic clove when you get to the bottom of your cup – steeping in the tea lessens that raw garlic bite.

Growing up I enjoyed many morning breakfasts of delicious home-made banana bread which my Mom would bake for us. The recipe passed down generations from Granny is one that brings me so much comfort. Though I was saddened when I discovered that this delicious treat would not be one that I could prepare for my own little family as my eldest son has a moderate food aversion to gluten, dairy and eggs.

After many failed attempts at re-creating a baked good that we could all enjoy, I was told by a friend to check out this website Elana’s Pantry - where I discovered a guilt-free muffin snack that is totally delicious and free of flour and sugar. It’s quickly become a family favourite and you must try baking a batch of these protein-packed Carrot-Banana Muffins.

Enjoy! Let us know what you think in the comments!
