It’s true, yesterday we received our organic box from Ceres, but today we saw that the pals from Local Organics had this amazing box plus organic milk, bread and eggs on sale, and we didn’t think twice and bought it :D They are super kind, and the products are amazing. :D It’s location is pretty good, half a block from the corner of Brunswick and Nicholson! For us just great.

The power of we:

The Colca Canyon, in Peru, is one of the deepest canyons in the world, many rural communities live there and for many generations they have been producing their own food and fair trading with different communities. In this area the land has been producing food with the hard work of a group of people who believe in the power of sharing not only the food but also their lands.

You can see them very early in the morning in Cabanaconde, leaving their homes and walking to the farms. They still use donkeys on their labours. When the setting sun brings us the last photons, you can find the locals eating a huge plate of food in small restaurants or kioskos. If you are not afraid of local food you can share with dinner with them, talk about the history of the land and the places surrounding it. You can learn a lot. Maybe this people can help us, help everybody who is struggling to manage a co-op, community garden or a multi-owner crop production.

Tiny Tim Tomatoes, Living living room Window on Flickr.:D Oh...

Tiny Tim Tomatoes, Living living room Window on Flickr.

:D Oh spring, then summer, then ready to eat.

Dear Friends:

Some days ago we received several messages from our friends telling us about the Aysen (up) Rising. It was not rare nor unpredictable. Certainly for several years they have been in constant battle for many causes, most of them social with a deep environmental component also.

Aysen is the most isolated region in Chile, part of the wonderful Patagonia this region proudly has one of the most bounded social-people structures in the country. The populations is small, winter is hard, the tele-communication companies have a limited coverage in the zone, the people communicate via radio UHF and via small messages sent by the local radio Santa Maria where is possible.

Some nights ago (for them) We were listening to Radio Santa Maria, ‘Claudita’, the local presenter, was receiving calls not only from journalist but also from local people telling what is happening, their thoughts and expectations about the movement they call: “Tu problema es mi problema” (Your problem is my problem). I remember one of the locals telling Claudita:
"No se trata de ser antisistema, este es un sistema que es antinosotros".
“This is not about being anti-systemic, this is a system that is anti-ourselves”

The people from Aysen are just asking to have the right to live in good conditions, without the current limitations that money and influences put in their lands by foreign hands. In Chile the minimum salary is not set according to local needs, it is the same amount all across the country, but the cost of living in remote areas of the country, as is the case of Aysen is at least 25 percent higher than in the rest of the country. They are asking for the right to educate their children in their lands, without having to send them to another region to obtain a degree in a good university. They are asking to have the right to stay warm during winter, to have food for the whole family, to give their children not only the food provided by the educational system, but also be able to feed them at home. To pay a fair amount of money for the basic consumption of gas, light and water. They are asking the right to have a proper hospital, not just a primary attention centre, they are asking not to have to flight to Santiago or to take a bus or drive to Argentina to have medical care. They are asking to be considered when a project will be built in their lands, they are asking to have voice in the decisions that concern them. They are asking for a Patagonia Without Dams. They are asking to be connected via highway with the “mainland”, now the only way to get to the rest of Chile is crossing by ferry or driving through Argentina. They are asking to be Chileans with a Chilean Government considering they are part of the nation and not only a land for profit without souls living there.

Local fishermen are trying to obtain guarantees and rights to continue their work in the sea. As of now 7 big national and international corporations control and posses more than 92 percent of the fishing quotas in the country.

The people of Aysen continue making communal meetings to share opinions and write together the official list of demands of their collective needs and wishes, that have been unheard for several decades. The Ayseninos are like that, pacific non-violent people, who like to talk their problems out. And the movement we are witnessing now started exactly like that, with demonstrations comprising cultural gatherings and pacific marchs. But tired of not being heard by the government they decided to stop the flux of vehicles, and being an isolated region with not many roads they were very successful in their intent, prohibiting the entrance of trucks and buses, allowing the flow of cars every few hours. Being completely aware that by doing this they were cutting themselves from the supply of petrol and food.

The government did not like this state of things and put the whole weight and force of the special forces of the police against them. Several military aircraft have landed in the region, with new police forces and special vehicles. Until May 2011 there where no water canons in the area, but according to reports there are now water canons and pepper/tear gas tanks. In the meanwhile the government is making pretence that nothing is happening, this is probably because several other small localities in Chile are supporting the movement in Aysen and expressing their own needs and discomfort. In our opinion the government is scared that a real social movement is in the growth. (Update: some minutes ago we received info that the Energy Minister is going to the Region Tomorrow with a proposal the government call “serious and responsible”

The situation today is as follows. The fishermen have taken control of the bridge, National Monument, that connects Puerto Aysen town with the principal port, cutting the sea connection with the rest of Chile. For several nights police forces and local fishermen have been fighting for the control of the bridge. The repression is huge, the special police forces are attacking with tear/pepper gas, metallic pellets/shots, water cannons and more. The international human rights observers made calls to the government to stop the violence, some of them told us “In Puerto Aysen the human rights are being violated”. A young man was shot at point-blank range in his eye. Now he is in Santiago in the hospital and his brother was sent by the local people who collected money from personal local donations to buy the ticket and money for transport in the city. The truck drivers have taken the roads, blocking the pass of vehicles for several days. The food, gas, disposal services, airport shuttles are being blocked. Every few hours the truck drivers open the pass for local people. Emergency services are always allowed.

In all the towns, small fires are lit to sit around, to share the last supplies of food preparing cooperative dishes and to share the warmth in this southern land. They have faith that if all stay together in this cause they will accomplish their objectives.

Go Aysen! Fuerza Aysen!
