“Hey.” Benny jerked his chin toward the window.

“What?” Chance said.

“Take a look at the scene down on Morgan.” Benny cut the wheel, and the VTOL banked left so Chance could see below them. A group of young men, all of them wearing purple jackets and hoodies, surrounded a young teenage male without colors.

“I see it.” Chance unbuckled his seatbelt. “Death Squad. Looks like a jump in—either that or they’re just being assholes.”

Benny held up a hand. “Hang on, bro. Us getting in the middle of that is only going to make it worse.”

Chance jabbed a yellow key on the console. With a clunk, the full-sized surveillance drone disconnected from the cab of the Aeron police-issue VTOL and lifted away. Blade-thin wings extended, it banked and circled slow, its telephoto camera capturing identities with facial recognition software.

“Technically,” RITA said, “a child is in danger. As sworn peace officers, you are obligated to intervene.”

“That’s right, RITA.” Chance said, pushing up the wing door to the VTOL. He reached up and connected his tether to the eyebolt on the doorframe. “You do what you want, Benny, but I’m going in.” He slipped his Devcon assault helmet on and gave Benny the hang ten sign.

“You reckless son of a—” Benny called after him.

Bailing out of the VTOL, Chance zipped down toward the crowd, controlling his speed with a gloved hand by pulling the rappel cable away from his body. Chance landed and ripped the end of the tether free from his armor. He unclipped the sub-compact Electro-stream shock rifle from his chest and flicked it open, the stock clicking into position. The bulky rectangular muzzle snapped arcs of electricity as he snugged the minimalist stock into his shoulder. Oversized power coils in the frame glowed white, static-charging with a whine.

Standing over the bloody, beaten teen, Chance swiveled back and forth, the “less lethal” shock rifle aimed at the furious gang members. The Death Squad goons encircled him, a sea of plum-colored jackets shifting, the gangbangers unzipping to produce concealed weapons. Chance slapped a raised orange triangle on the chest of his armor. A piercing siren shrieked from the hovering VTOL, followed by a concussion like rolling thunder. Blue lights strobed across the surface of his armor.

“Attention.” RITA’s voice boomed from the VTOL’s megaphone above, echoing across the street. “By section six-zero-nine-five-two of the Neo Terminus Criminal Code, you are engaged in criminal gang activity and will be sent to the Blocks if you do not cease and desist. Disperse immediately by order of the NTPD.”

The terrified kid at Chance’s feet stared in shock at the gang, then at the single cop standing over him. Blood dripped from his nose and off his chin.

“What’s it gonna be, fellas?” Chance said, his body coiled for action.

The Anubis embalmers had washed Horque’s body, encased it in natron salt, and mummified it according to all but one of the traditions of the Jackal-headed God - the exception being that they had not removed any of his organs. On his chest, she laid out a scarab pectoral and into his mouth, she placed a length of straw.

Opening Fryme's package, she fingered the dark green leaves. She'd used hyssop many times before and had grown to enjoy its astringent odours. Deftly, she worked the herb into a paste and poured a droplet onto a wafer… She re-read the hieroglyphs on the wall: 'The Spell of the Gods' and beneath that, the warning, 'Use me wisely, lest I turn and rend thee.'

PROLOGUE

The man sat patiently upon his throne-like chair—formidable to all who dared enter into his dark splendor. The throne, as he called it, was supported by a raised platform, several stairs leading up to it. Shrouded in pitch black robes, he appeared only a silhouette—his red eyes striking fear into anyone who was brave enough to peer into them. The circular room had no windows. Massive clusters of blood diamonds gleamed furiously on the walls, glistening in their geometric designs. Two doors stood in front of him, though they were merely vague outlines in the darkness.

Any minute now, he thought.

Just then, the doors in front of him swung open, revealing his most trusted assistant. The assistant reached the stairs to the throne and bowed.

“Arise,” spoke the voice upon the throne, gazing down upon the man.

“My Lord,” said the assistant. “They are ready.”

“Excellent,” said the man upon the throne.

His voice was a deathly calm, almost as if a cat was purring just before it devoured a bird. The assistant knew this, and he knew what the cat’s true temper looked like—and he knew to avoid it with his life.

“Bring me my hunters,” said the man on the throne. He gleamed at his assistant, drilling him with a red stare of menace as the assistant arose and left the room hastily, not speaking a word—not daring to stoke the fire of a temper that would burn him alive—the stalking cat that would pounce out of the shadows.

My dad narrowed his eyes. “Why do you want to talk about this now?”

I knew what he meant: why was I ruining this moment, which was supposed to be a happy one, just the two of us connecting.

Of course, I could tell him the real reason. But what if he decided that I needed to go to Calgary Psychiatry? Then I would surely lose Carmen.

“I just think it’s interesting.”

My dad gave me a long hard look and opened his mouth to say something.

“There you go.” Rosemary appeared in front of us. “Two blueberry pies and two hot chocolates.”

She put the plates and mugs down. My dad’s smile was back, as well as that glint in his eyes. “Thank you so much; you’re a true saint.”

Rosemary giggled, putting a hand on his shoulder. Lingering. “Oh, stop.”

I looked down at my pie. My skin tingled again.

“Enjoy!” She squeezed my dad’s shoulder, turned, and walked back to the counter to help the next customers. Her long, blonde hair swayed from side to side as she did.

My dad stared after her.

“Dad?” I leaned forward, trying to catch his eye.

“Hm?” He jerked his head back to me, plastering a smile on his face. He sat back, placing his hands next to the plate with pie. “Well, let’s enjoy these, shall we?”

I nodded, picked up my fork, and dug in. The sweet-sour taste of the blueberries filled my mouth. It wasn’t enough to stop the uneasy feeling, nor the increasing pricking of my skin. I couldn’t believe it was happening again—I thought I’d managed to push it away.

“Is Mom home for dinner tonight?” Talking surely would provide some sort of distraction. I hoped.

My dad scoffed, then checked himself and gave me a small smile. “No, she’s working late. But she said she hoped we could play some games when she got home.”

I nodded. It wasn’t unusual; my mom’s job as an attorney required long hours and hard work. But it was a job she loved.

What worried me was the strained tone in my father’s voice as he said it.

This summer, we’d gone camping—enjoying the great outdoors. We’d been doing that for years, and I always loved the peacefulness. Well, I suppose I didn’t always enjoy them, but I did now I was older.

This year, however, my mom brought her laptop with her. So she could still check her email every now and then. She was close to making partner—she didn’t want to ruin it.

“This is important, don’t you understand?” my mom hissed at my dad, both of them thinking I was sound asleep.

“More important than spending time with us? Your family?” he snapped back.

“That’s not fair.” My mom’s voice broke a little. “I’ve been supporting this family for years. I’m the reason we get to go on this vacation in the first place. You don’t know what it’s like. To stand your ground between all those men. Some still treat me as their fucking secretary!”

My father shushed her, likely to keep me from hearing their conversation. I suppose they both forgot that the walls in a tent are very thin.

“You know I’m proud of what you’ve achieved. I am. But is it really more important than… than me?”

The silence stretched on.

“I-I don’t know.” Her voice was barely a whisper, yet it seemed like she was shouting in my ear.

It was then that I first experienced that crushing feeling, the clenching in my chest. The inability to breathe. The pricking and burning of my skin.

The eruption of colors. The voices.

Author Interview

1. Did any research go into writing your books?

Absolutely! I did a lot of research on a huge variety of topics, from nautical terminology in the Age of Sail, to life in Victorian times and the various and many sources of mythology that go into Fairy stories all over Europe. It was a labor of many years and I wanted those details to feel right.

2. Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

Inspiration is easy. Like every other author out there, I grew up with a love for books and movies, so you’re constantly moving through a stream of ideas. You finish a book and think: ‘maybe I could write something like The Big Sleep, but with weasels, right? It’s taking those ideas and making them into something that people want to read that’s the difficult part.

3. If you could put yourself as a character in your series, who would you be?

Mostly, I wouldn’t if I could help it. I mean, books are people with fascinating characters, but they’re not usually having a fun time. Frodo, Fantine, Philip Louis de Pointe, Marlowe, Hamlet, Jay Gatsby, etc. Mine are no different, and mostly have a miserable time, pushing through impossible obstacle after obstacle. That being said, you have the chance to be a dragon for a little while, I’d have to take that.

4. Do you snack while writing? Favorite snack?

Coffee and lots of it. :^)

5. Are there any books or writers that have inspired your writing?

Every book, every writer. Most have been mentioned before, but here’s a bigger list: Roger Zelazny, Ernest Hemingway, Tanith Lee, A.C. Doyle, Emma Bull, Guy Gavriel Kay, Robert B Parker, Donald Westlake.

Guest Post

Writing with children in the house is not easy, though now both mine are at school I get plenty done after they leave and before they come home. But holidays are more difficult. Usually, we do stuff in the morning and then when they slink away to use electronics after lunch, that’s my writing time! It can be hard after the holidays are over to get back into writing morning and afternoon. But I always aim to write at least 1200 new words a day, five days a week. I take weekends off but not really many holiday days. When the kids are at school, I do the writing in the morning then after lunch I will do any admin tasks, or I may have a video or article on writing or publishing to watch or read. Or I might try and write a short story. I have had a few shortlisted and two cosy crime stories published. My novels are YA Fantasy, but that’s the beauty of short stories, you can explore a different genre more easily. I also do research for the next project in the afternoons.

Although my books are set in fantasy, made-up worlds, I still want them to be believable. So I research the climate, the types of plants and animals that might live in that type of landscape. I will also research the culture and it all influences my writing.

My first published novel The Shard took me almost two years to write, edit and publish, but since then I have brought the time down. It takes about 4 to 4.5 months to write, then anything between two weeks and a month for editing (allowing a week for it to sit in a draw while I work on something else) – this time depends on whether the kids are on holiday or not! Then I send it for a professional edit, to ensure I am putting out the best quality I can, and that can take 5 to 6 weeks to come back. Then a week or so on making any changes. During the professional edit I also commission a cover. For A Shimmer of Magic, I chose MiblArt as I had heard of them in a Facebook writing group and seen a cover on a book I really liked. I try to have everything done before I put the book on pre-order, but if I have to, I will use a homemade cover and then upload the new one once it arrives – well before it releases!

Jane Shand has always been an avid reader of fantasy and mystery and is an author of YA Fantasy.

She got hooked on fantasy after reading ‘Lord of the Rings’ at a young age and was determined to write books full of magic and adventure.

She lives in Hampshire, England with her family and two cheeky cats who would love to help her write.

She has published The Darkling Duology plus a prequel novella, a standalone book, and is now working on The Crystal Mages Trilogy which will be followed by a longer series set on the same continent.

For most people, I think writing about oneself is difficult, and that’s no exception for writers. I must have written a dozen different versions of this. But hey, if you’re here, you must be interested in knowing a little about my life. I live in Northern Utah with my wonderful husband and our rambunctious toddler. We’re a family that likes to be on the go, so you’ll probably find us at the zoo, on a hike, or out for a run together. And yes, the housework suffers while we play. There are usually crumbs on the counter, dishes in the sink, and toys on the floor.

I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in health education and history teaching. I taught junior high school for two years before switching careers. I now work from home for a local credit union and write down the stories in my head when I have time.

Myla – Age Sixteen

Don’t think about Lady Reaper.

Gah. This is hard.

Finally, it’s February thirteenth and Mom’s driving me to the Lust festival. Fortunately, she still hasn’t guessed my plan for tonight.

And that would be: kick Lady Reaper’s ass.

Unless the lady in question doesn’t want to fight… only, that’s unlikely. For whatever reason, I simply bring out the worst in evil.

An idea appears. Focus on something other than lady you-know-who. Memories return. It’s earlier today. I stand on the floor of Purgatory’s arena, ready to battle a horde of demonic millipedes. I’m talking eight-foot-long monster-bugs with green exoskeletons and serious anger management issues. The insects scurry across the sand, screeching as they close in on yours truly. Scooping up the first monster, I use it as a battering ram against all the others and win, win, win. Good times.

Mom steers our station wagon down another dirt road in Purgatory. Betsy—that’s the wagon—blares polka music. Her radio’s been stuck on the same station for years. A new rendition of Roll Out The Barrel plays so loudly, the windows shake.

I try to focus on the tune, but my mind veers back to she who must not be named.

Don’t think about Lady Reaper.

Too late. Mental pictures appear as I daydream my butt off.

Lady Reaper stands before me, sporting her Victorian gown, eentsy beentsy hat, and huge scythe.

“How did you find me?” asks Lady Reaper. “No one knows I visit this festival each year.”

“Let’s just say I have a very informed honorary older brother.”

Lady Reaper sniffs. “You must be here to thank me. Back in 1857, I helped Purgatory move souls.”

“Correction.” I hold up my pointer finger. “You moved those ghosts, but not to Heaven or Hell. A bunch of spirits from 1857 are missing. Anything you want to confess?”

“Alas!” Lady Reaper hangs her head. “ I am evil to the core.”

This is how things always roll in my daydreams. Villains quickly admit they suck.

“Glad we cleared that up. How do I get the ghosts back?”

“Not telling.” Lady Reaper flips her weapon so the long blade sits up top. “Time to die!” She swings the cutting blade of her scythe toward my face.

Jumping up, I land a roundhouse kick—SLAM!—against the side of Lady Reaper’s head. She stumbles backward, pinwheeling her arms. I’m happy to report that her little hat falls off. The scythe lands nearby.

“Mwah hah hah!” I cry.

Lady Reaper’s all-black eyes widen with shock. Reaching forward, I grab her scythe and—

A chill runs up my back, snapping me out of my fantasy.

Crap. I thought about Lady Reaper.

Maybe Mom didn’t notice how I mentally entered my own private battle zone. Little by little, I force my gaze away from the passenger-side window to where Mom sits behind the steering wheel. Sure enough, she glares in my direction.

“Are you scheming again?” asks Mom.

Oh, she noticed.

I discovered I had the disease when I was in the seventh grade, when it was fine to be anything but normal, when people were never checked or hunted, when everything was both at peace and on the brink of chaos.

Standing by the embedded ax, Rill shot an arrow at the lead brigand chasing the girls. From the corner of his eye, he noticed a group of outlaws had almost reached the woodpiles. He pivoted, releasing three swift arrows.

A mage cast a spell at them, but Troy countered it.

And then the brigands were too close for spell casting or arrows.

Rill backed into the space between the piles, dropping his longbow and drawing his sword with one hand and his dagger with the other.

Troy’s shout sounded behind him. “Here they come, Freya!

Yells and the clanging of steel on steel rose from beyond the charging brigands as Kate, Yall, Jade, and Magnus desperately fought a huge pack of bandits.

More split logs landed between Troy and Freya. Troy slashed at an exposed arm. The blade cut all the way through. The victim screamed, “We’re hemmed in.”

More and more firewood came tumbling down while Rill slashed at exposed hands and arms that were shoving the kindling.

“Push from the middle!” a voice cried. “We’ll bury ’em under the wood.”

“Idiot!” another voice shouted. “Didn’t ya hear Palquo say he wants ’em alive? Push from the top and flush ’em out.”

Rill stepped back as several pieces of firewood fell on the spot he’d been occupying. He traded desperate looks with Troy and Freya. “We gotta make a run for it!”

Troy stepped back from a hail of kindling, almost tripping on wood scattered behind him. “How? We’re trapped in here.”

“We ain’t got no choice.”

“Running is suicide.”

“So is stayin’.”

Just then a voice said, “Are you sure he said we can do it?”

“Yeah,” another voice responded. “Palquo said he doesn’t care now if they’re half dead. He’ll still get his revenge.”

Hoots and hollers followed the words.

“Now,” the voice yelled, “all together . . . heave!”

Horror overwhelmed Rill. It was too late to run. And he was going to die.

Dan Lutts, the author of Charm Wars, was brought up in Quincy, Massachusetts, and began addictively reading Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman comic books at an early age, much to his mother's distress. In junior high school, he switched to reading science fiction novels. While in high school and college, he wrote science fiction short stories.

Dan taught history and archaeology in high school for ten years. After being laid off because of budget cuts, he used his love of writing to retrain and became a software technical editor and writer. He worked for several computer companies, taught technical writing at the college level, and worked as a freelance writer.

Dan loves to read and has varied tastes, including Young Adult, historical fiction, mysteries, 18th-century sea epics, and history. He especially enjoys Young Adult fiction and decided to try his hand at it. Charm Wars, Dan's first novel, is the result.

I glared at our wilted set of crops, trying to reconcile myself to the idea that the Earth’s soil was likely poisoned. One thing after another, I thought. We can’t overcome everything.

“Kali.”

I glanced over at him, meeting his even gaze. He smiled at me then, slowly, and I let the warmth of it spread through my body.

“We will get through this,” he said, and I almost believed him.

There was something about being with him—it was a feeling that everything was right, like some cold, wayward pieces of a puzzle were falling into place. I bit my lip and looked back over the field. But I can’t be with him… We can’t…

And then I was warm. His arms circled around me, his chest pressing against my back. Without thinking, I leaned into him, and he brushed his lips along my neck. My emotions exploded and fire burned in my chest. I gripped his arms, holding him against me, trying to keep my reactions in check.

“We will find a way forward,” he murmured, his breath against my skin. “And if we discover there is no way, then we will forge a new one. Together.”

Together. An impossible word.

Impossible, yet I wanted it more than anything. Here, so close to him, I was burning. I was drowning. Not able to resist any longer, I turned and kissed him, and the flame in my chest responded, exploding through my veins. My fingers curled into his shirt as his hands wound through my hair. I let myself float in it for a moment—a pure, blissful moment—before I gently stepped away. I moved out of his arms—to a place where I was cold. To where I was empty.

His eyes were like an animal’s, wild and electric, and we watched each other as we silently reined ourselves in. The loss of him settled like a pit in my stomach. “There is no, ‘together, ’Tiamat. Not for us.”

His lips parted, his face going blank from shock. “What?”

“This is nothing new. We can’t even be near each other. It’s killing me!”

“Kali,” he pleaded, grabbing for my arms. His nose had started bleeding, but he briskly swiped it away. Did he think I wouldn’t notice the blood?

I backed up, yet he continued toward me, one step after another. “You’re wrong,” he said. “What you just said is entirely new! Proximity is difficult for us, I know. And yes, we have to be careful.” I climbed up on a mound of earth and debris we had cleared from the field, trying to put some space between us. Seeing it, he stopped his advance, his hands dropping to his sides. “But … we are meant to be together,” he continued. “Can you not feel it? Kali! Tell me you don’t feel that.”

“I feel it,” I whispered. “And it’s too much.”

“Don’t say that.”

“I have to say it!” I blurted. “I can’t do this anymore, Tiamat,” I said, gesturing at the space between us. “I want to get close to you… I need to. Something inside me feels wired that way. And it isn’t fair.” His eyes were wide, swimming with a look of disbelief. And loss. I ripped my gaze away, fixing my stare on the dirt by my foot.

“Have we been reduced to this?” he asked. “Where you won’t even look at me? Where our love has become pain?”

“You’re wrong,” I said. “Our love isn’t just pain. It’s death.”

“Then I choose death.” His voice was a growl. “I have said it before. It is mine to choose.”

“No!” I shouted, snapping my eyes to his face. “I won’t argue about this anymore. It’s the same thing, around and around and around!” I felt my eyes burning and beginning to fill. I blinked, trying to keep the tears at bay. “Every second we’re close, I can feel your Shadow slowly killing you.” My voice softened as I took in his stricken expression. “Tiamat … How can I be okay with that? How can I allow myself to be the cause of that?”

“Kali… you have never been the cause. It’s the Shadow.” He scrubbed his hands over his face in agitation. “I can figure this out. Just … hang on a little longer.”

Dennis lay face down on the soccer field, while men in ski masks strolled among his prone classmates waving semi-automatic weapons at anyone who moved. He considered employing his martial arts skills, but being skinny and only passably good, such foolish courage would probably get him killed.

He shook his hair from in front of his eyes with a slight jerking motion and focused on James and Linda, lying on the field off to the side with the rest of the parents.

James had his head slightly raised and Dennis caught his eye. When a gun- man approached, James quickly returned his face to the grass. James wanted to intervene. That was obvious by the way he kept looking around for some kind of opening. But could he do anything without getting people killed?

The masked men called themselves “anarchists” and were well armed. Despite lying prone for the past forty minutes, Dennis had managed to spot sentries pa- trolling the rooftops, apparently stationed there to prevent the cops outside from storming the school and making their way to the field. He’d also noted the types of weapons these guys carried and considered how best each could be disarmed if this was a comic book scenario.

Except it wasn’t.

He considered the anarchists ’claims. They said they were “anti-capitalism” and “anti-public-school indoctrination,” but then they demanded twenty million as ransom for not killing him and his classmates, which sounded pretty capitalistic to him.

Raising his eyes once more, he noted a big, broad-shouldered dude wearing a black and blue ski mask, staring right at him while chatting with a burly guy holding an Uzi. Dennis averted his eyes and hoped he hadn’t called too much attention to himself. He’d overheard them earlier as they conversed by walkie-talkie. Masked guy was called “C-1” and burly guy “C-2” by the other anarchists, so he figured they ran the show.

He glanced over at Jackson and Kenny lying a few feet away. His two best friends looked terrified. Jackson’s curly hair partially hid his brown eyes, but Kenny’s bright blue ones screamed pure fear. Dennis tried for an encouraging smile, but it was difficult with his cheek pressed against the grass.

All his comic book scenarios started much like this one, except the hero al- ways knew what to do. As annoying as Robin could be, he’d know what to do even if Batman wasn’t around. Dennis’s mind raced with ideas. He knew James was packing—on duty or off, James always packed. But if he pulled his gun, kids would die.

I wish I’d thought of something when these guys first showed up.

Instead, he’d frozen with fear when the masked men flooded onto the field. And now with everything that had gone down since, Dennis trembled with the terrifying possibility that someone would die. Maybe him. Sadly, he wasn’t the hero of his dreams.

He peered at the administration buildings. Long and single story, the two main wings spread the length of the field. His gaze traveled up and he squinted with confusion. The sentry who’d been on duty at the north end was gone.

What the…?

Dennis knew his weaponry from playing Call of Duty and other war games, and that guy had been patrolling with an Artic Warfare Super Magnum sniper rifle, likely a .338 Lapua Magnum, but Dennis was too far away to be sure of the model.

Only now the guy was gone. With C-2 barely ten feet away, Dennis used caution to scan the south roof. That sentry was gone, too. SWAT maybe? He knew James ’mean-ass boss would have called in the big guns for something like this. But he was also sure those sentries had been up there no more than two minutes ago.

Could it be Invictus?

His heart thumped with hope. Vincent must know about this by now. Dennis pressed his face into the grass and pretended to look scared. Hell, he didn’t have to pretend. He was scared!

“Warning. Collision alert. Warning.”

The loud electronic voice reached me a second too late. I’d already stepped off the curb into the street and directly into the path of a delivery van.

A flash of white and chrome filled my peripheral vision as the bumper made contact with my left hip, sending me to the pavement with a wince and a yelp.

The good news was I wasn’t flattened by the thing. The nearly silent electric vehicles were programmed with collision avoidance tech that slowed them automatically in case of a sudden obstacle, which meant it hit me hard enough to knock me over but not hard enough to crush bones.

The bad news was I could already hear the shouting of the obviously perturbed operator through the van’s closed windows. No doubt the accident had surprised him as much as it had me.

He’d probably been relaxing in the back of the self-driving vehicle watching vids or reading when he’d felt the jolt and sudden stop. Now he was storming around to the front of it, spewing a stream of profanities.

“What the hell are you doing?” the van operator demanded. “Didn’t you see me coming?”

Before I could respond or get up on my own, a pair of strong hands slid beneath my arms. He picked me up off the ground and set me upright. I would have protested the invasion of my personal space, but it all happened too fast.

Brushing off the seat of my uniform, I tested my footing, lifting and wiggling one foot then the other.

The ache in my tailbone told me I would be sporting some very colorful bruises tomorrow, and my butt couldn’t have been any wetter if I’d cannonballed into a swimming pool. Lovely.

“So are you okay? Say something.”

Anger still emanated off the guy in waves, but his deep voice now held a note of concern. What could I say? I felt like an idiot.

“Of course I saw you. I just thought getting run down would be a good way to score some tech augmentation in my lower limbs.”

I finally glanced up at the man– who hadn’t responded and was not laughing at my joke.

My hair was in my eyes, disheveled from my fall. I pushed it from my face, and the sight in front of me nearly knocked me backward again.

Technically, I supposed he was a man, but he was younger than I’d expected, close to my age.

He was big. And angry. His dark brows were drawn together tightly. It wasn’t the forbidding expression that stunned me. It was his eyes.

Their color was like nothing I’d ever seen before– a spellbinding combination of blue and green so beautiful, so piercing, it almost defied reality.

I was so mesmerized it took me a second to realize he was staring at me, too. He’d been in the middle of a question.

“So then you’re not hur–” but he’d broken off mid-word.

After a long pause during which he continued to stare at me like he’d never seen a girl before, he spoke again. “Your eyes. They’re brown.”

“Yeah…” I dragged the word out into a question. “… last time I checked.”

Something about his troubled expression struck a cord of recognition. I glanced from his incredible eyes to the shock of dark hair above them and down to the breadth of his shoulders then the rest of his tall, big boned frame and then at the name badge on the front left pocket of his company uniform.

Heath.

“Have we met before?”

The guy blinked rapidly and back-stepped toward the delivery van, his head moving in a tight, rapid shake.

“No, I don’t think so. You’re okay? You’re not hurt?”

He paused for my answer, but his back and shoulders were plastered against the front of the van like I was dipped in flu virus and he hadn’t had a vaccination in years.

The instant I said, “I’m fine,” the guy turned and climbed into the van. Within seconds it was whispering away down the road, the unmistakable Gideon Corp logo on its back doors shrinking then disappearing as the vehicle rounded the corner.

Oookay. It was obvious why he was a delivery man for the world’s largest biotech company and not employed in some capacity where he might have been required to interact with actual humans on a regular basis.

Totally awkward.

But cute.

“Preach!” Jessa said.

Something pushed me at the shoulder, sending a flare of pain up my neck.

“Preach!”

I batted at the hand pawing my shoulder as the scene fell into focus.

“Are you okay?” Jessa’s gray eyes were wide and her blond hair wild. Tears streamed down her face as her jaw tensed.

“Yeah. Yeah. You?” I sat up, fighting the urge to scream at the pain streaking down the side of my neck. “Is the girl okay? Where is she?”

“You’re cut.” Jessa reached for me.

I grabbed her hand. “Are you okay?” Jessa was one of my best friends. I couldn’t handle it if she was hurt.

She nodded. “Let’s go check on the girl.”

My stomach hollowed out. I’d hit someone. I hit a person.

What if I killed her? This was not happening. Could not be happening. I yanked my seat belt off and shoved the deflating airbag to the side enough to find the door handle. My head swam, and my vision tilted, but I blew it off. I had to help the girl.

She was all that mattered right now.

“What was she doing in the middle of the road like that?” I yelled.

“I don’t know! Come on!” Jessa said.

My head spun as I fumbled with the door handle, and a wave of nausea threatened to pull me under. Finally, I managed to get out of the Jeep and hustled around the front. My hood was right up against the car the girl was standing near, so I was blocked. I bolted around the back end to find Jessa leaning over a sprawled-out girl.

“Hey. Are you okay?” she asked.

The girl was lying on her back, auburn hair splayed all over the ground, a deep contrast to the thin layer of white snow coating everything. The girl held something furry in her left arm tight to her chest.

She was wearing a maroon GORE-TEX jacket, tight black leggings, and what looked to be running shoes. She couldn’t have been out here running, could she? No, no way. It was freezing and the streets were coated with ice.

“Is she dead?” I asked, praying like hell that she wasn’t. Please don’t be dead. Please…

Her eyes flung open, and she gasped.

The bundle in her arms wiggled and let out a high-pitched bark. How the heck had she held onto a freaking dog while getting hit by a car?

“Oh my gosh!” Jessa gasped.

“You’re okay,” the girl said, looking at the dog. “Thank goodness.” She stroked the dog, then sat up suddenly. “Wait, where’s my car?”

Jessa pointed to an embankment to my left. “Is one of those yours?”

“Son of a bitch!”

I’d collided with both vehicles, but the Ford SUV got most of the damage. The front end had crumpled and the windows were smashed.

“You wrecked my car!” She sat up, holding the dog, her glare ripping a hole through my chest.

“I’m so sorry,” I said. “Are you okay? Are you hurt?”

“Well, I don’t see any blood.” She held up a hand and wiggled her pointer and middle fingers. “Oh, ouch! I can’t move my wrist.” She held it close to her chest, her fingers directly next to the little dog’s face. “I can’t feel my fingers. They’re tingly.”

My gut clenched. A wave of jittery energy coursed through my legs, and I was pretty sure they were going to give out. The adrenaline crash was hitting hard, and the world tilted slightly. A headache bloomed at the base of my skull. It knocked, hard, too, like Wind was taking slap shots at my head.

“I’m going to call 911,” Jessa said.

Jessa helped the girl, who looked like she was about our age, to a seated position a few feet away from me. We were on the shoulder of the road, next to my Jeep, so Jessa propped her against the front passenger-side wheel. The bundle of fur wiggled in her grasp.

“This little guy needs some attention. Found him on the road.”

“Ryan, your head!” Jessa was suddenly in my face, examining me. “Let me see.”

A wave of pain swept over me, and it felt like I’d been kicked in the stomach. This was not good. Not good at all. It was after midnight, which meant we were all out driving past the state-mandated curfew, and here we were, sitting on the side of the road, two banged-up cars.

It has been a difficult winter. The sea does not agree with John, and we are always cold. Perhaps we will find peace in this new land, although many believe we have not left danger behind. Outside my window, the coastline resembles Southampton, and

for that I am grateful. I will always long for home, but our kind are no longer safe there. I myself do not believe the rumors, but we must do as instructed. It has always been our way. John and I are traveling as husband and wife now. We are planning on marrying soon. There are far too few of us, and more are needed if we are to survive. Perhaps things will change. Perhaps good fortune will shine on us, and our situation will ameliorate. The ship has anchored. We have landed. A new world awaits!

The Bank was a decrepit stone building at the tail end of Houston Street, on the last divide between the gritty East Village and the wilds of the Lower East Side. Once the headquarters of the venerable Van Alen investment and brokerage house, it was an imposing, squat presence, a paradigm of the beaux-arts style, with a classic six-column façade and an intimidating row of “dentals”— razor-sharp serrations on the pediment’s surface. For many years it stood on the corner of Houston and Essex, desolate, empty, and abandoned, until one winter evening when an eye-patch–wearing nightclub promoter chanced upon it after polishing off a hot dog at Katz’s Deli. He was looking for a venue to showcase the new music his DJs were spinning—a dark, haunted sound they were calling “Trance.”

The pulsing music spilled out to the sidewalk, where Schuyler Van Alen, a small, dark-haired fifteen-year-old girl, whose bright blue eyes were ringed with dark kohl eye shadow, stood nervously at the back of the line in front of the club. She picked at her chipping black nail polish. “Do you really think we’ll get in?” she asked.

“No sweat,” her best friend, Oliver Hazard-Perry replied, cocking an eyebrow. “Dylan guaranteed a cakewalk. Besides, we can always point to the plaque over there. Your family built this place, remember?” He grinned.

“So what else is new?” Schuyler smirked, rolling her eyes. The island of Manhattan was linked inexorably to her family history, and as far as she could tell, she was related to the Frick Museum, the Van Wyck Expressway, and the Hayden Planetarium, give or take an institution (or major thoroughfare) or two. Not that it made any difference in her life. She barely had enough to cover the twenty-five dollar charge at the door.

Oliver affectionately swung an arm around her shoulders. “Stop worrying! You worry too much. This’ll be fun, I promise.”

“I wish Dylan had waited for us,” Schuyler fretted, shivering in her long black cardigan with holes in each elbow. She’d found the sweater in a Manhattan Valley thrift store last week. It smelled like decay and stale rosewater per fume, and her skinny frame was lost in its voluminous folds. Schuyler always looked like she was drowning in fabric. The black sweater reached almost to her calves, and underneath she wore a sheer black T-shirt over a worn gray thermal undershirt; and under that, a long peasant skirt that swept the floor. Like a nineteenth century street urchin, her skirt hems were black with dirt from dragging on the sidewalks. She was wearing her favorite pair of black-and-white Jack Purcell sneakers, the ones with the duct-taped hole on the right toe. Her dark wavy hair was pulled back with a beaded scarf she’d found in her grandmother’s closet.

Schuyler was startlingly pretty, with a sweet, heart shaped face; a perfectly upturned nose; and soft, porcelain skin—but there was something almost insubstantial about her beauty. She looked like a Dresden doll in witch’s clothing. Kids at the Duchesne School thought she dressed like a Dickensian urchin. It didn’t help that she was painfully shy and kept to herself, because then they just thought she was stuck-up, which she wasn’t. She was just quiet.

Oliver was tall and slim, with a fair, elfin face that was framed by a shag of brilliant chestnut hair. He had sharp cheekbones and sympathetic hazel eyes. He was wearing a severe military greatcoat over a flannel shirt and a pair of holey blue jeans. Of course, the flannel shirt was John Varvatos and the jeans from Citizens of Humanity. Oliver liked to play the part of disaffected youth, but he liked shopping in SoHo even more.

The two of them had been best friends ever since the second grade, when Schuyler’s nanny forgot to pack her lunch one day, and Oliver had given her half of his lettuce and mayo sandwich. They finished each other’s sentences and liked to read aloud from random pages of Infinite Jest when they were bored. Both were Duchesne legacy kids who traced their ancestry back to the Mayflower. Schuyler counted six U.S. presidents in her family tree alone. But even with their prestigious pedigrees, they didn’t fit in at Duchesne. Oliver preferred museums to lacrosse, and Schuyler never cut her hair and wore things from consignment shops.

Dylan Ward was a new friend—a sad-faced boy with long lashes, smoldering eyes, and a tarnished reputation. Supposedly, he had a rap sheet and had just been sprung from military school. His grandfather had reportedly bribed Duchesne with funds for a new gym to let him

enroll. He had immediately gravitated toward Schuyler and Oliver, recognizing their similar misfit status.

Schuyler sucked in her cheeks and felt a pit of anxiety forming in her stomach. They’d been so comfortable just hanging out in Oliver’s room as usual, listening to music and flipping through the offerings on his TiVo; Oliver booting up another game of Vice City on the split screen, while she rifled through the pages of glossy magazines, fantasizing that she, too, was lounging on a raft in Sardinia, dancing the flamenco in Madrid, or wandering pensively through the streets of Bombay.

“I’m not sure about this,” she said, wishing they were back in his cozy room instead of shivering outside on the sidewalk, waiting to see if they would pass muster at the door. “Don’t be so negative,” Oliver chastised. It had been his idea to leave the comfort of his room to brave the New York nightlife, and he didn’t want to regret it. “If you think we’ll get in, we’ll get in. It’s all about confidence, trust me.” Just then, his BlackBerry beeped. He pulled it out of his pocket and checked the screen. “It’s Dylan. He’s inside, he’ll meet us by the windows on the second floor. Okay?”

“Do I really look all right?” she asked, feeling suddenly doubtful about her clothes.

“You look fine,” he replied automatically. “You look great,” he said, as his thumbs jabbed a reply on the plastic device.

“You’re not even looking at me.”

“I look at you every day.” Oliver laughed, meeting her eye, then uncharacteristically blushing and looking away. His BlackBerry beeped again, and this time he excused himself, walking away to answer it.

Across the street, Schuyler saw a cab pull up to the curb, and a tall blond guy stepped out of it. Just as he emerged, another cab barreled down the street on the opposite side. It was swerving recklessly, and at first it looked like it would miss him, but at the last moment, the boy threw himself in its path and disappeared underneath its wheels. The taxicab never even stopped, just kept going as if nothing happened.

“Oh my God!” Schuyler screamed.

The guy had been hit—she was sure of it—he’d been run over—he was surely dead.

“Did you see that?” she asked, frantically looking around for Oliver, who seemed to have disappeared. Schuyler ran across the street, fully expecting to see a dead body, but the boy was standing right in front of her, counting the change in his wallet. He slammed the door shut and sent his taxi on its way. He was whole and unhurt.

“You should be dead,” she whispered.

“Excuse me?” he asked, a quizzical smile on his face. Schuyler was a little taken aback—she recognized him from school. It was Jack Force. The famous Jack Force. One of those guys—head of the lacrosse team, lead in the school play, his term paper on shopping malls published in Wired, so handsome she couldn’t even meet his eye.

Maybe she was dreaming things. Maybe she just thought she’d seen him dive in front of the cab. That had to be it. She was just tired.

“I didn’t know you were a dazehead,” she blurted awkwardly, meaning a Trance acolyte.

“I’m not, actually. I’m headed over there,” he explained, motioning to the club next door to The Bank, where a very intoxicated rock star was steering several giggling groupies past the velvet rope.

Schuyler blushed. “Oh, I should have known.” He smiled at her kindly. “Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why apologize? How would you have known that? You read minds or something?” he asked.

“Maybe I do. And maybe it’s an off day.” She smiled.

He was flirting with her, and she was flirting back. Okay, so it was definitely just her imagination. He had totally not thrown himself in front of the cab.

She was surprised he was being so friendly. Most of the guys at Duchesne were so stuck-up, Schuyler didn’t bother with them. They were all the same—with their Duck Head chinos and their guarded nonchalance, their bland jokes and their lacrosse field jackets. She’d never given Jack Force more than a fleeting thought—he was a junior, from the planet Popular; they might go to the same school but they hardly breathed the same air. And after all, his twin sister was the indomitable Mimi Force, whose one goal in life was to make everyone else’s miserable. “On your way to a funeral?” “Who died and made you homeless?” were some of Mimi’s unimaginative insults directed her way. Where was Mimi, anyway? Weren’t the Force twins joined at the hip?

“Listen, you want to come in?” Jack asked, smiling and showing his even, straight teeth. “I’m a member.” Before she could respond, Oliver materialized at her side. Where had he come from? Schuyler wondered. And how did he keep doing that? Oliver demonstrated a keen ability to suddenly show up the minute you didn’t want him there. “There you are, my dear,” he said, with a hint of reproach. Schuyler blinked. “Hey, Ollie. Do you know Jack?” “Who doesn’t?” Oliver replied, pointedly ignoring him. “Babe, you coming?” he demanded in a proprietary tone. “They’re finally letting people in.” He motioned to The Bank, where a steady stream of black-clad teenagers were being herded through the fluted columns.

“I should go,” she said apologetically.

“So soon?” Jack asked, his eyes dancing again. “Not soon enough,” Oliver added, smiling threateningly. Jack shrugged. “See you around, Schuyler,” he said, pulling up the collar on his tweed coat and walking in the opposite direction.

“Some people,” Oliver complained, as they rejoined their line. He crossed his arms and looked annoyed. Schuyler was silent, her heart fluttering in her chest. Jack Force knew her name.

They inched forward, ever closer to the drag queen with the clipboard glaring imperiously behind the velvet rope. The Elvira clone sized up each group with a withering stare, but no one was turned away.

“Now, remember, if they give us any trouble, just be cool and think positive. You have to visualize us getting in, okay?” Oliver whispered fiercely.

Schuyler nodded. They walked forward, but their progress was interrupted by a bouncer holding up a big meaty paw. “IDs!” he barked.

With shaking fingers, Schuyler retrieved a driver’s license with someone else’s name—but her own picture— on its laminated surface. Oliver did the same. She bit her lip.

She was so going to get caught and thrown in jail for this. But she remembered what Oliver had said. Be cool. Confident. Think positive.

The bouncer waved their IDs under an infrared machine, which didn’t beep. He paused, frowning, and held their IDs up for inspection, giving the two of them a doubtful look.

Schuyler tried to project a calm she didn’t feel, her heart beating fast underneath her thin layers. Of course I look twenty-one. I’ve been here before. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that ID, she thought.

The bouncer slid it under the machine again. The big man shook his head. “This isn’t right,” he muttered. Oliver looked at Schuyler, his face pale. Schuyler thought she was going to faint. She had never been so nervous in her life. Minutes ticked by. People behind them in line made impatient noises.

Nothing wrong with that ID. Cool and confident. Cool and confident. She visualized the bouncer waving them through, the two of them entering the club. LET US IN. LET US IN. LET US IN. JUST LET US IN!

The bouncer looked up, startled, almost as if he’d heard her. It felt as though time had stopped. Then, just like that, he returned their cards and waved them forward, just as Schuyler had pictured.

Schuyler exhaled. She and Oliver exchanged a restrained look of glee.

They were inside.

“Will that be all?” The lady beams like they put a thousand sunshines into her coffee. Everyone turns chipper when they see such a pretty man then they turn bitter when said pretty person leaves. I know from experience.

“Dimitri,” I growl.

He smiles. “Yes, thank you.” Coming back over to me, he gives me a smug, beyond-sexy smile. Hell, I bet when this man sneezes, it’s still bloody attractive. “Baily?”

I cross my arms over my chest.

“Will you please let me—Dimitri, your friend—do something nice for you? Something friends are allowed to do, even in the South?”

I narrow my eyes, but when he just stands there, I give in. “Fine,” I grumble, holding my hand out.

He makes a circular motion with his finger, signaling for me to turn around. With a huff, I do. “Every now and then…” he rumbles in my ear, and I tense when gooseflesh rises on my skin. It’s eighty-degrees, I’m sweating like a pig, but in this moment, I don’t mind the body heat radiating off him. What is this sorcery? “You deserve something for yourself. I’ve only known you for a short time, and in that time, you’ve only thought of others. Promise me you’ll think of yourself upon occasion, too.”

“I make no such promise,” I grumble, turning back to face him. “But thank you.”

“Aww,” the girl behind the register says. “I wish my boyfriend did something like that for me.”

I smile at her, not in the mood to try to explain he’s not my boyfriend but bodyguard. Because my grandma’s kinda a queen of a village called MacAleese, which is on the south side of Ireland and I’m of the royal family. I just didn’t know about it until…bam, you’re a freakin’ princess, wear your tiara and shut up. Yeah, that might make someone ask a few questions or draw a little bit of unwanted attention.

8:07 p.m.

Ghoul Underground Boxing Arena #SBL-4, The Dark Lands

My prize match kicks off in twenty-three minutes. Anticipation zings through my limbs. To relieve tension, I jog in place while popping my boxing gloves together. A long tunnel opens before me, ending with a rowdy crowd of ghouls. Their chants echo all around.

“Fight! Fight! Fight!”

Normally, ghouls are pretty chill. It all goes with being super-tall, pale and undead. Only wearing long black robes also seems to keep them calm. But even ghouls lose their collective minds during the infamous Undead Rumble. Why? There’s a championship belt at stake.

“FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!”

The room is an underground chamber carved out from open earth. Inspirational posters cover the walls, telling the population to Love the Oligarchy or Adore Paperwork. Classic ghoul stuff. Tiered metal risers are filled with ghouls, all of them in their dark robes. They cheer madly at an empty boxing ring.

The cries grow even louder as the announcer steps out from a nearby access tunnel. She pauses in a pool of light at the center of the boxing ring. A microphone dangles from a long cord that’s attached to the ceiling.

The announcer grabs the mic. She’s a skeletal figure who wears the classic black robes common to all ghouls. Her skull appears to be covered in a thin layer of gray skin.

“Welcome to the Undead Rumble!” Beams of red light shine out from the announcer’s eye sockets.

The crowd cheers. It’s a good thing they’re dead, because this much yelling might kill someone.

The announcer continues. “This isn’t a fight with a champion who’s an angel from Heaven… a quasi-demon of Purgatory… a thrax of Antrum… a human from Earth… a dragon

shifter from Furonium… or even a demon of Hell! This is a fight where the champion is our very own undead warrior, Ghoul Killa!”

Crowd keeps yelling, only they begin punching their fists in the air while jumping up and down. The audience loves the idea that a ghoul is the baddest of the badasses. Mostly because it never happens. Ghouls are notorious wimps.

“Tonight, GK goes up against Gage L’Griffe, the new glass dragon king!”

I tilt my head. Am I hearing that right? Glass dragoon king? Huntress and I shared a kiss a few months ago, but that only made us bonded mates, not crowned royalty. And even if we did gain our official thrones, it’s not like it’s a big deal. There are all of six glass dragons left.

Why would anyone think my possible kingship is a big deal?
