Everything’s bigger in Texas: the hair, the food and, of course, the celebrating.  While it is now recognized around the country, Juneteenth in College Station is unique to Texas.  Residents and visitors alike are invited to celebrate Juneteenth in College Station at any of the free events scheduled throughout the month of June.

History of Juneteenth in College Station

Although President Lincoln’s official Emancipation Proclamation was signed in September of 1862, the lives of slaves living in Confederate states like Texas didn’t change much.  That is, until troops were sent into Galveston on June 18, 1865 to enforce the proclamation.  On June 19th, General Gordon Granger officially proclaimed that, from that day forward, all slaves were free and must now be paid as hired help.  Thus, “Freedom Day”, aka Juneteenth, was born.

Juneteenth Events in College Station

June 13th – Freedom Walk and Storytelling, Lincoln Recreation Center, 9am to 11:30am.  Take a two mile walk from the center to the George Bush Library and Museum.  Afterwards, hear stories about the emancipation of the slaves in Texas.

June 17th – Praises at the Pavilion, WA Tarrow Pavilion, Lincoln Recreation Center, 6pm.  Spiritual groups from around Bryan-College Station will be on hand to sing praise and celebrate Juneteenth in College Station.

June 19th – Family Fun Carnival, Lincoln Recreation Center, 5pm.  Enjoy an evening of free family-friendly fun, including music, carnival games and lots of activities.

Located at 1000 Krenek Tap Rd, Stephen C Beachy Central Park will be filled with hot rods, muscle cars, street rods, trucks and other classic cars on display from 8am to 4pm Saturday and 8am to 2pm on Sunday.  All classic car and truck owners in the Brazos Valley are invited to participate.  Registration takes place either at the beginning of each day or via telephone at (979) 324-3362.  The cost to enter your vehicle is just $25 each, with proceeds benefiting Still Creek Ranch, a Christian-based boys and girls home in Bryan, and Hospice Brazos Valley, who provides hospice care from their offices in Bryan-College Station, Brenham and LaGrange.

The public is invited to come see the cars and watch the awards ceremony at the end of the day on Sunday absolutely free of charge.  If you love classic cars and are in the Brazos Valley this weekend, you’re in for a treat.  Come to the Bluebonnet Rod Run at College Station’s Stephen C Beachy Central Park Saturday and Sunday.  You’ll have a revving good time!

Adamson Lagoon (1900 Anderson in College Station) will be hosting Back to Pools Day from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, June 1st.  Join in the beach-themed party fun which will include lots of games.  The party is free with admission to the lagoon ($6 per person unless you have a pass).  Regular hours for the lagoon during the summer are:

• Tuesdays through Thursdays – 1pm to 7pm
• Fridays – 2pm to 7pm
• Saturdays and Sundays – 12pm to 7pm
• Sunset Hours (Tuesdays through Fridays) – 5pm to 7pm, discounted to $3 per person

Adamson Lagoon is closed on Mondays.  The summer hours are in effect until August 25, 2013.  Passes are available for purchase for any College Station resident at the Stephen C Beachy Central Park Office during regular business hours (1m to 5pm Monday through Friday) as well as the Adamson Lagoon during its normal business hours (see above).  They can be carried over into the following year if they have not been used up during the season.  Ask the attendant on hand for more information.

It’s the end of the school year.  That means it’s Back to Pools Day in College Station.  Start summer off right at the Adamson Lagoon!  Splash your way to a soaking good time.

Beginning at 7pm at Bryan’s Grand Stafford Theater (located at 106 South Main Street), the Coleman Brothers with Eric Myers will be performing a “Tribute to a Firefighter”.  In addition to the live concert, attendees can bid on locally donated goods and services at the silent auction.  All proceeds from the evening’s event will go directly to the firefighters as well as their families that were affected by both the Bryan and West tragedies earlier this year.  Tickets are just $12 per person presale or $20 at the door.  Donations are always welcome.  You can purchase your tickets and/or make a donation online by visiting the Grand Stafford Theater’s website here.

Approximately 13,500 children are diagnosed with some form of pediatric cancer every year.  In fact, the number of children diagnosed with invasive cancer has increased 29% over the past two decades alone.  Camp Quality Texas is a non-profit organization that has offered kids with cancer a respite from the sterile walls of a hospital ward with their summer camp.  They also provide year-round support and services for children and their families in the Bryan-College Station area.

Since they are a non-profit organization, Camp Quality Texas relies on the generosity of the Bryan-College Station community to continue their services.  That’s where you come in.  From 2pm to 6pm on Sunday, April 28th, the Lakeside Icehouse at Lake Bryan will be serving crawfish and all the fixin’s for just $5.99 per pound.  All proceeds from the event will go directly to Camp Quality Texas to help fund the activities they have planned for the children attending their summer camp this year.
