The idea for AN IMPOSSIBLE ALLIANCE started when I re-watched the movie, “Notting Hill” with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. In this film, Julia is an actress, and is shooting a period piece--maybe late nineteenth century--in England. Hugh visits her on the set.

I thought, what if my heroine is an actress (or a would-be actress), in a Regency period piece, and then suddenly time-travels back to Regency England? At first she’d believe she was still on the movie set. Were the people she met actors or extras--actual folks living in twenty-first century England?

Or, in Willa’s case, the people turn out to be genuine Regency inhabitants.

Bingo!

Eighteen-year-old Willa Berkeley lives in the shadow of her famous actress mother. Although Willa’s greatest hope is to be a ballet dancer, she agrees to her mother’s desire for her to journey to England and take a small acting part in a major film production. Once on-site at Highbridge Hall, she learns the horrendous reason behind her mother’s “request.” Distraught, she makes a wish for happiness at the Hall’s supposedly enchanted lake. For my tidbit from real life, I’ll include this: My heroine, Willa, is just eighteen years old. So, I had to jump back in time myself to reconnect with the angst of an eighteen-year old. Yikes. I reread diary pages from that period in my life and discovered I was rather emotional (no surprise), sometime clueless (ah well!), and yep, insecure.

I made Willa conflicted in her feelings as she tries to figure out not only her path in life, but also the male of the species (good luck with that!)

Here’s a scene set-up showing some of Willa’s confusion.

Scene Set-Up:

Misunderstandings abound! Ian Laydon returns to his ancestral home and believes the woman he finds by the enchanted lake is his neighbor’s daughter--and soon-to-be his intended--Arabella Carswell. However, it’s Willa Berkeley who wakes up after a wish at the enchanted lake. She believes she is in the middle of a film shoot with actors rehearsing their lines.

EXCERPT:

The beauty of the lake distracted Ian. Perhaps it would soothe Arabella as well. Pulling her with him, he stood on the sandy shore and watched a family of mallards noisily float on the surface. As he did not have treats for them, they sailed past. Once the ducks were out of range, he picked up a stone and hurled it out onto the water. It skimmed and skipped on the surface, and then sank with a plunk.

“There.” He turned to her. “I feel better. Would you care to try it?”

She wrinkled her finely sculpted nose. “No. I don’t understand any of this. Is this part of the script? Are you and I suppose to--”

“Supposed to what?” She looked so desirable, he leaned over and nuzzled his chin against her well-formed ear. This close to her, he was lost indeed. “Supposed to kiss? I have been wanting to kiss you, my dear.”

He took a great liberty. He knew he did. But as he had told her, they were almost engaged. What would be the harm? Before she had a chance to slip away, he curved his arm around her and pulled her even closer, enjoying her feminine feel against his chest.

“Allow me the pleasure, my moppet,” he murmured. Then his lips touched hers.

So soft, so pliant, so wonderfully sweet. He tightened his hold and traced his tongue over the fullness of her lips.

For a moment, he had her. She did not move. She was his. The next second, she jerked away.

Her green eyes flashed fire. “No! You’re not that... that slimy goat of a director, are you?”

Artificial Intelligence. Yep, a very timely topic indeed. When I first was brainstorming this science fiction romance, I focused only on having the female protagonist, Francesca, trying to pass as an android. The reason for this was for her to gather intel or information so that her group of downtrodden Humans could escape a “superior” class of ruling Humans. Then, somehow, Artificial Intelligence got into the mix (doesn’t it always, nowadays?!). Now, AI... or in this case NI (Natural Intelligence), is on top of the pyramid, actually lording it over Humans.

Honestly, if isn’t scary, I don’t know what is!

In HOME COMPANION, 2.0, Francesca does become an android whose purpose is to sexually cater to NI’s top employee, Valliant Smith, so that she can rescue her brother Dominic and other members of his team. What she doesn’t know... and neither does Valliant... is that NI itself has an interest in her!

PRETENDING TO BE AN ANDROID

When Francesca’s brother Dominic is captured at the AI Command Complex, she must go undercover to rescue him. Going undercover means pretending to be “Chessy”, an Advanced Android/Home Companion, catering to AI’s ruthless ambassador, Valliant Smith. Acting without emotions isn’t all it’s cracked up to be... especially when Valliant turns out to be a very “valiant” lover. Once she locates Dominic, Francesca finds herself in league with a “Gone With The Wind” obsessed robot, along with avoiding being demolished for secondary parts. Also, to her shock, she has to deal with the lusty sentient supercomputer itself. Escaping from the AI Command Complex means freedom for her and Dominic, but... will she ever see Valliant again?

Ever since birth, Valliant Smith has been told he is the “best of the best” of Humanity. His DNA is enhanced to improve the Human species, and he considers himself superior to weak, inferior Humans. And yet, for some reason AI arranges for a Home Companion android to take care of all Valliant’s... needs. Valliant is not impressed; he has no use for a subservient automaton. Once Chessy shows up though, she becomes a constant surprise. A pleasant surprise. A very alluring surprise. This book is part of the Fascinating Sci-Fi line.

Here’s a real life tidbit. So, surprise, surprise, I have nothing in common with an advanced android, as our protagonist, Francesca Dumonte, is pretending to be. However, what I do share with Francesca is a healthy dose of skepticism about the reliance on Artificial Intelligence.

Growing up, I had a voracious appetite when it came to reading science fiction stories. Isaac Asimov was one of the greats... in many genres, and his extraordinarily famous three laws of robotics will live forever. Here’s a humorous picture pertaining to this!

So, yes, at an early age, I was well versed in the perils of “intelligent” robots.

I also was influenced by H.G. Wells’ “Time Machine”--the 1960 movie. In this movie, we see how--in the far future--Humankind has divided and evolved into two groups: the Eloi and the Morlocks. While computers or artificial intelligence don’t play a role in this cautionary tale, this movie depicts the Eloi as... well, as basically cattle, to be eaten by the grotesque Morlocks. The Eloi have forgotten their heritage; all the knowledge passed on by their ancestors; they’ve even forgotten their humanity.

Perhaps this exposure to these fascinating ideas might explain how I came up with HOME COMPANION, 2.0.

In any event, everything is not all doom and gloom here. I very recently got a “BooBoo” AI pet and yep, I’m enjoying this lovely creature of pure love!

New Year’s Resolutions and an Ancient Roman God

January is the month of Janus, the two-headed god of ancient Romans in charge of new beginnings. His two faces gazed in opposite directions so that he could watch the start and the end of each day. With such a momentous job, Janus was the natural choice to usher in the New Year. But the actual first day of the New Year was up for grabs until the Roman Senate settled on January 1. Janus became the god people prayed to for mercy from their enemies and for a prosperous time ahead.

Janus is one of the few Roman gods that has no counterpart in Greek mythology as the Zeus/Jupiter or Hera/Juno duality. Janus was one of the "good gods" who humankind could appeal to for help in everyday life. How Janus became associated with the negative connotation of being hypocritical or deceitful: "two-faced" or "Janus-faced," remains a mystery. God of doors, gateways, beginnings, childbirth, the future and the past, he was often called upon at the start of wars. To show his support, the doors to his temple in the Roman Forum would remain open during wars, while they stayed closed during times of peace.

Beginning the New Year with resolutions is a tradition we are very familiar with. Many people pledge to work on bettering themselves, and vow to stop smoking, lose weight, or give up drinking. The ancient Romans also had resolutions, eager to throw out whatever bad luck they had in the old year and replace it with good luck in the new. They believed in giving New Year's gifts: olive branches from special, sacred trees; gold-covered nuts; or from the wealthy, gold coins of Janus himself.

We in modern times also look forward to a fresh start on January 1 and derive comfort from traditions with our family and friends. Our custom of having parties on New Year's Eve comes from the belief that what people did or ate on January 1 would affect the luck they would have throughout the coming year. What better way to ring in the New Year than celebrating with those you love?

Many people still believe in the tradition that if a tall, dark-haired man is the first person to enter their house, they will have good fortune for the entire year. And as for food, black-eyed peas are a requirement to eat on New Year's Day, along with ham or hog jowls, a symbol of prosperity. Some regions consider cabbage as lucky food, doughnuts as the circle of life, and even rice is considered fortuitous.

Whatever your New Year's resolutions are, may the god Janus be smiling down upon you.

A DELICATE CONDITION got its start when I first saw a picture of a woman’s legs in high heels. Immediately I knew I wanted to have that picture as the cover for my next book. As my next project was destined to be a time-travel Regency, I envisioned the Regency hero--whoever he was--treated to the sight of a modern woman’s lovely lower legs complete with sexy heels. That decided, all I had to do was fill in the rest of the details! Ha!

At the time I was heavily into researching genealogy. So mixing ancestors with modern day descendents also seemed perfect! Add in mysterious Tibetan monks, magical magnetic stones, and voilà, A DELICATE CONDITION was born.

LONGING FOR A FAMILY:

Odessa (Dessa) Franklin is all alone in the world. She’s suddenly contacted by her long lost great aunt, Verna, who supposedly died nearly eighty years ago. But Verna has a hidden agenda and Dessa has a curiosity that rivals a cat’s. Using Verna’s mysterious magnetic stones, she soon finds herself in a house full of relatives... back in the nineteenth century!

TOO MUCH FAMILY:

Michael De Lyndley, the Marquess of Hampton and a gentleman astronomer, prefers studying the stars than having family members roam about his manor house. His house is in mourning however and overflowing with family. Just when he thinks his relations will leave him in peace, a new one appears... unexpectedly, wearing the most peculiar apparel. The woman purports to be his late brother’s widow and claims to be with child; at least the letter that precedes her states this information. Fighting his attraction to his new sister-in-law, Michael struggles to learn the truth about the lovely and enigmatic Odessa.

As always, I like to include a tidbit from real life. In this case, it’s my life! Back in the last century, I took a class trip to New York City’s Museum of Natural History, and of course saw the Hayden Planetarium. Oh, it was absolutely fabulous. As a budding science fiction writer, I gobbled up all the fantastic out-of-this-world sights! And of course, the famous meteorite, which now looks like this, below:

The meterorite is 4.5 billions... BILLIONS... of years old and weighs thirty four tons. Let me tell you, that mega huge piece of iron is difficult to forget!

Anyway, while doing research, I found that a meteorite actually crashed in England in 1795. Naturally, I had to weave that well-documented event into the story, with Odessa relating her experience of touching the New York meteorite.

While the meteorite was no longer at the original site, a monument was erect to commemorate the crash. Here, Odessa, along with Michael’s fellow gentlemen astronomers view the monument. Written on it is:

Lord Roberts [one of the astronomers] returned to the front of the monument. “Well, where is the demmed thing?” he roared. “It didn’t just up and walk away!”

Evidently Stockman didn’t find the comment humorous for he gravely shook his head. “The Major put the rock on display for a time. Exhibited it at Piccadilly in London, too. Open to the public, it was.” He shrugged. “But sold it, I guess. Or gave it to James Sowerby, a naturalist as he calls himself. Been with Sowerby since aught four.”

Odessa touched one of the sun-bleached red bricks on the monument. “That’s too bad. I would’ve loved to feel the meteorite. I actually did touch one once in New York. The stone was so pitted, it was almost like fingering something that had passed through the depths of hell.”

The Scoop on “Carla’s One-Sided Crush”

The inside scoop on the short story (or VERY short story as some would say) is also going to be very short. Amazon estimates the story at fourteen pages. The word count is around 2,300 words. It’s available at Amazon.com, Smashwords, and Universal Link. The story sells for 99 cents.

I’d like to reduce the amount, only 99 cents is the lowest I’m allowed to go on those sites. Originally, this story appeared at Fictionwise.com for 49 cents, and readers were very happy with that price. But alas, Fictionwise closed its doors. Periodically, Smashwords holds a sale, and I can set the price to free at that time, so do check on the link every now and then. “Carla’s One-Sided Crush” has been a popular download.

Some time ago, one of the “hot” romance internet sites, All Romance eBooks, put out a call to authors for short stories with a Back-To-School theme. The word count reflected that they wanted a quick read. I answered the call with “Carla’s One-Sided Crush”. It was quickly chosen, and even earned this comment:

“This is fabulous! It gave me goose bumps. LOL!”

The story appeared in their newsletter, Wildfire, and sizzled there during the month of September.

It’s a really cute story!

Maybe Carla's schoolgirl crush hadn't been so one-sided after all.

You may be wondering why I gave Carla’s crush the name of Newton. Ah, it’s a tidbit from real life. I’d just found out my great grandfather’s first name was Newton. I’d known him as Frank, which turns out to be his middle name. Cool, right?

A Halloween Inspired Tale

Witches, ghosts, and hobgoblins... Halloween is a perfect time of year to enjoy yourself. Chills, thrills, and spills (of candy!) are the order of the day. And while I’ve given up dressing in costume for this special day, I do have fun giving out plenty of the sugary stuff when visitors knock on my door.

Naturally, to celebrate one of my favorite holidays, I had to create a story featuring one of my top ten candies: Candy Corn. Since I write romance (in several genres), I had to include a love twist and I do like to combine real life events in my stories. So for this short story, I drew upon treat-or-treating back in the old days... well, in the sixties, anyway. This short story includes the fear of my younger self that my grownup lipstick would mysteriously disappear, the frantic rush to ring as many doorbells as possible, and the dark, dank atmosphere of city apartment buildings.

The short story title: “True Love And Candy Corn”

BLURB: On a Halloween outing, thirteen-year-old Rebecca knocks on a “witch’s” door. As her treat, she is cursed with true love until the end of time, and even though desirable Frank Palmer seems to be the love object in question, Rebecca is thoroughly spooked. Now, nine years later, Rebecca is treat-or-treating again as she escorts her young cousins on their rounds. When she comes face to face with Frank, she doesn’t see true love as a curse anymore. Will the witch’s prophecy come true?

I wanted to have a different setting for this Regency, so the first part of the book is set in Sicily, with the latter taking place in York, England, which, as a side note, has the reputation of being the most haunted city in Europe.

I’ve never been to Italy or Sicily, so getting the flavor of the land and surroundings was the most difficult part. I do have an Italian and English background, and I was happy to combine both heritages in this lively Regency!

This novel deals with one man's prejudice against his own family. He has a ready dislike of anything or anyone non-English, and when his father marries a lady from Sicily... well, Robert Weston is seriously displeased. Too bad, says his stepsister, Lexia Cappello, the Contessa di Fabrianni. Unaware of the Sicilian tradition of "Fortuna"--true love--Robert gave Lexia the four colors of roses--red, white, yellow, and pink. She and he are destined to marry, no matter what he thinks!

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: Because of the Sicilian tradition of “Fortuna”, Lexia Cappello believes she is destined to marry her stepbrother, the Marquess of Rutherford. Robert Weston, however, has a ready dislike of anything or anyone non-English. Can she convince this obstinate lord that his ignoble prejudice stands in the way of his future happiness?

ALL IN THE FAMILY: At first Robert Weston is annoyed, then intrigued by his new-found Sicilian stepsister. The more he resists her, the more he finds he yearns to possess her. Can he overcome his pride to admit the error of his ways and win the Contrary Contessa’s heart?

I truly enjoyed “living” in Lexia Cappello’s character. Out of all the heroines in my books, I’d say she is the one most unlike me. What a saucy minx! As you’ll find out, she has Robert Weston, the Marquess of Rutherford, wrapped around her feminine, little finger. :))

Here’s an excerpt from THE CONTRARY CONTESSA that was inspired from real life. As a child, I learned that it was a “sin” for food to grow cold. When called to dinner, you didn’t dawdle in taking your place at the table. And so, this book is dedicated to my mother “who knows pasta must always be served hot!”

In the scene below, Robert and his friend James Dutton, have just arrived in Sicily to bring Robert’s half siblings back to England. Robert is unaware that his hostess for dinner is not only the Contessa di Fabrianni, but also his stepsister, Lexia.

In the center area of the room stood an extended oblong table, made of highly polished cherrywood. Seating for twelve, however seven place settings presently were arranged on the sleek tabletop. A large ceramic bowl of pasta was already placed near the plates, along a heaping container of mouthwatering tomato sauce and small dishes of finely grated cheese.

The combination of aromas tantalized his senses, caressing him as a lover might, after a long abstinence.

Robert instinctively licked his lips.

“Ah, the signori are hungry, yes?”

To the side of him, poised by a larger painting of the Venetian canals was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. As she turned from the picture to face him, he drank in the sight of her. Dressed in the finest French silk, the woman looked like the queen that he had only minutes before made fun of. Her dark, shiny hair curled in ringlets, was piled high on her head, and was set off with a gold star bandeau.

A pert nose, high cheekbones, and the largest, luminous eyes in the world, the woman fluidly made her way to his side. The motion caused the soft, rounded mounds of her breasts as revealed by her modestly cut décolletage to quiver ever so slightly.

Faith, his mouth suddenly went dry. Dutton was also affected, for he too remained owl-eyed and silent.

“Does no one speak? Is the conversation all up to me?” She dimpled a smile at him.

That smile. Good Lord! She was the Contessa! Somehow she had transformed her ragtag self into a Madonna worthy of every man’s reverent worship. His wits gone begging, he struggled to hide his obvious astonishment.

“With all due respect, Contessa, you are... you are... so different.”

“Ah, Marquess, what sharp eyes you have.”

Damn it all, but Dutton laughed. Leaning over, he whispered into Robert’s ear. “Street urchin, hey?”

The Contessa curved her lips into a Mona Lisa smile, evidently overhearing. “Urchin, eh? That is not what the Marquess called me earlier.”

Blast! Remembering his behavior in the kitchen, Robert flushed. This girl/woman was sharp on the uptake, as sharp as a rapier’s point, while he had displayed the rag manners of a bovine Cit. He could not blame his conduct on the wine. His boorishness was his responsibility. His alone.

With an elegant motion of her long-sleeved arm, she gestured toward Dutton. “You are Signore Dutton, yes?”

His friend made a stately bow. “James Dutton, at your service, ma’am. Thank you for your hospitality on such short notice.”

For the first time, her saucy smile seemed to reach her eyes. She glided over to the table, her assurance evident in every step. “Let us sit, signori. The pasta, it grows cold. In Sicily, there is no worse fate.”

My award-winning Regency romance, A CONTINENTAL MARRIAGE, holds a very special place in my heart. When you view the cover, you’ll understand why! But before I get into that, let’s look at the genesis of the story. I wanted to try my hand at writing a Regency with an American heroine as a contemporary with her Regency peers. The idea of feisty American pitted against a proper Englishman intrigued me. No time-travel is involved here. Since this Regency is set in 1814, the War of 1812 is raging behind the scenes. This seemed a perfect background for the heroine, Nicolette Turner, and hero, Victor Kincaid (Lord Cushing), to be at odds with each other for their external conflict.

Nicolette is summoned to travel across the Atlantic by her English grandfather, Lord Eldridge--a man who disinherited her beloved father. This novel takes place in Long Melford, Suffolk, and London, with a honeymoon trip to Southwold. I also wanted to have some of the characters from another one of my Regencies, The Reluctant Landlord, make a brief appearance. So in addition to creating Nicolette and Victor’s story, I had to decide where to introduce Katrina Jones and Quentin Thornhill, revisiting their personalities, along with a few of the other characters.

An American Rose: American Nicolette Turner has a bone to pick with the British. Not only is her country’s maritime rights being violated, but her English grandfather, Lord Eldredge, demands that she travel across the Atlantic to visit him. What she doesn’t know is that he intends for her to marry, thereby staying in England and having lots of babies.

The most eligible suitor is neighbor Victor Kincaid. Victor has severe money problems. Lord Eldredge offers to take care of the debts... if Victor marries Nicolette. At first Victor believes she’s a fortune-hunter, but soon becomes captivated by her. Can he convince her he wants more than a marriage of convenience?

She took the time to research how long correspondence would have taken as well as how expensive it might be etc… I was drawn into the story early on and I enjoyed the entire story. 4 Roses! Susanne Marie Knight just proved how talented of a writer she is with her new release, A CONTINENTAL MARRIAGE. I thoroughly enjoyed this sweetly written Regency about a marriage of convenience. It is definitely going to please the historical romance reader! I just loved Knight's writing style and voice. Just by words alone, she was able to transport me back in time to Regency England. I didn't feel like a spectator when reading her book; instead, I felt like I was part of the story! I love when an author can affect me like that. I have to admit that I like a well-written story about marriages where both the participants slowly fall in love with one another. Nicolette and Victor are both very likable and you can't help but feel sorry for their unfortunate circumstances. When Nicolette Turner is forced to travel across the sea into "enemy" territory, to England and the estranged grandfather she blames for her family's hardships, she has no idea what awaits her. Her cantankerous grandfather is the least of her problems. English snobbery...gossiping tongues... and worst, the handsome baron who lives next to her grandfather’s estate, who seems to think Nicolette is a money-grubbing, uncultured savage from the backwoods of America. From almost the first page of A Continental Marriage, I felt a connection with Nicolette. Though pretty and spirited, as any romance heroine should be, she did not come across as a cliche. I loved the way she thumbed her nose at a wealthy society who looked down on her merely because she was not English. But I also liked the way the author gave her a soft and vulnerable side. It gave her a well rounded believability which is all important for me, as a reader. I really felt I was there, living out this adventure, and I really enjoyed falling in love with the handsome Victor Kincaid. There were a few mild curses, but much less than you’d probably see in an hour of regular TV. And best of all, the focus was on the romance that developed between the two main characters, without the panting and groaning that make some romances feel more like a really bad prank call. The romantic tension was there without all that stuff, and a better story for it. A delightful read.--Long and Short Reviews

Now for the big reveal... and a tidbit from real life! Nicolette is referred to as an American rose. In one of my daughter’s high school graduation pictures, she’s in a country setting and is holding a red rose. I couldn’t resist; I submitted the photo to the cover artist. She agreed with me that this picture would make a perfect cover for A Continental Marriage. As you see the result, it’s a beautiful fit!

Scene set-up: The following shows the first instance where Nicolette--or Lady Nicolette as she is now known--is referred to as an American rose. The scene is in Victor Kincaid’s (Lord Cushing’s) point of view. He meets her for the first time and disapproves of her. The Duke of Devonshire (actual person) and the Earl of Eldridge (Nicholette’s grandfather) also are included.

Nicolette now sat next to the Duke of Devonshire, looking as attentive as any of the debutantes hungrily eying the bachelor duke. Perhaps her previous consternation had been all a ruse. Was she angling to become a duchess?

Victor joined in their conversation.

“Oh, hallo, Cushing.” The duke scratched at his auburn hair. “I was just telling Lady Nicolette that I regret I must take my leave tomorrow and return to London. Lord Liverpool has requested my presence.”

“Blasted politics,” Lord Eldridge chimed in. “Congress of Vienna just opened, you know. Castlereagh’s there to represent British interest against those Frenchies.”

Victor winced. Did Lord Eldredge forget his granddaughter was half French? “Lord Castlereagh’s our foreign secretary, Lady Nicolette,” he explained. “Now that Bonaparte has been banished to the island of Elba--”

“I’m knowledgeable on current affairs, Lord Cushing.” She sent him a freezing glare. “And Lord Liverpool is your prime minister. I do try to read the newspaper every day. After all, your country is still at war with mine, isn’t it?”

The Duke of Devonshire clapped his hands together. “Touché, Cushing, touché! Our American rose has got you dead to rights.” He inclined his head. “I do hope, my dear, with all my heart that we can also be done with this war as we are now through with Emperor Bonaparte.”

She extended her small hand. “I hope as you do, your grace, and I also hope you have a pleasant journey tomorrow.”

After the duke shook her hand, she stood and raised her voice to carry through the room. “Good night, everyone. It was very nice to meet you all.” As she glanced down at Victor, her expression hardened. Obviously she had not enjoyed meeting him.

Victor sat back and watched the enticing sway of her figure as she walked out of the drawing room. This American rose might be a beauty, but she also showed she carried a few thorns.

Here are some real life connections in COMPETITORS! My major in college was anthropology; my area of interest: physical anthropology. This certainly helped with the premise of COMPETITORS! The book’s setting is in the Bronx, New York--my old neighborhood, in fact. And my apartment also was Number 17, same as Vivianne’s brother’s place.

The inspiration for Max’s cat in COMPETITORS! was my beloved Siamese kitty. He always liked to “sun” himself under the lamp on my desk and give advice whenever I got writer’s block.

Below is a passage from COMPETITORS! Scene Setup: Vivianne had just met a stranger, Max, and his “cousin” Nilda. He treats her to lunch and has a favor to ask.

The server returned and placed the charges on the table. Vivianne leaned over to get her bill.

"Nein. No, you must allow me." Holding out his hand for the bill, Max waited for her to obey. His eyebrows descended even further, almost hiding the color of his eyes. "You are my guest. I insist."

Nilda sat back down, transferring her gaze from Max to Vivianne. "Yes, you will quite insult him if you refuse."

Whoa. Vivianne fingered her earring a little nervously. "I thank you, really but I would feel better if I pay--"

"No. This is my, how do you say, my treat." He snatched the paper, then reached into his pocket and removed two hundred dollar bills out of a money clip.

Gosh, he was awfully high-handed, wasn't he? But why fight about it? "Well, thank you, Max. I enjoyed lunch."

Nilda had a one-track mind. She stood. "Now we go."

Vivianne glanced at the two hundreds. The total charge had come to a hundred bucks plus tax. Surely he wanted change?

Max smiled again, but this time, he looked amused. "You are concerned about my finances, ja? Too much of a tip, is that it, Vivianne?"

He tugged on Nilda's arm, pulling her back into her chair. "We wait for change."

Nilda looked as though she was readying to snort fire at Vivianne, but the woman restrained herself.

"Besides," Max leaned over, this time grasping Vivianne's hand and sandwiched it between his two huge ones, "I have a favor to ask of Vivianne."

Now Nilda squirmed in her chair.

Omigosh! Vivianne must've blushed vivid scarlet. His body warmth traveled up her arm and down her chest to settle in the most indecent places! Just what kind of favor was he asking?

"It concerns my cat."

"Your cat," she repeated, taken completely off guard.

"Ja. My cousin is kindly letting me stay with her during my visit, but the problem is my cat, Eins. I am afraid he is not used to sharing space with other animals, and Nilda has a dog."

Nilda made a gurgling noise, then quickly drank from a glass of water on the table.

With her hand still trapped, Vivianne wasn't able to think. She removed it and placed both hands in the safety of her lap. "Eins? Doesn't that mean 'one' in German?"

"True, number one. Eins thinks a lot of himself."

She laughed. She couldn't help it. Who would've imagined this mammoth guy under the paws of a housecat?

With THE COMING, my award-winning paranormal romantic suspense, I wanted to come up with a plausible idea to explain what was going on with the notorious Bermuda Triangle. This novel is not a typical time travel, because the hero, Jack Harrington, is a World War II fighter pilot stranded for what he believes is five years in the Bermuda Triangle. The modern-day heroine, Larissa Parish, becomes stranded there as well, and is astonished to find out that he’s her grandfather’s best friend.

IMPOSSIBLE LOVE: After scattering her beloved grandfather’s ashes in the Caribbean, Larissa Parish is swept overboard and washes up on a deserted island. She comes face to face with a man who, most impossibly, is her grandfather’s cohort from World War II. Can she learn to fully give herself to this mouthwatering 40s hunk… and also figure a way to leave this outpost in the Bermuda Triangle?

Real life snippet: Growing up, I always enjoyed Roman and Greek myths. I still do, and I’ve written a few novels and short stories concerning these tales and individuals from antiquity. In ninth grade I first read the Greek epic poet Homer’s famous poem “The Odyssey”. My diary entry for that particular day was “I like ‘The Odyssey’.” Not especially inspiring words, but remember, I was only fifteen. :))

This “like” has lasted a lifetime. One particular phrase always stuck with me: rosy-fingered Dawn, or the Dawn arose rosy-fingered. Such a lovely image!

The Scoop on the Science Fiction Short Story, “Adolescence”

I have to admit the origin of “Adolescence,” my coming-of-age science fiction short story is murky in my memory. I have no idea why I decided to write a tale about a teenaged alien’s angst. Maybe it was because I had my own young fleshling at home. Weird! Anyway, I do know that in 2002, I submitted this short story to an internet website no longer in existence for consideration in their Qwik Fics line. The editor loved the story, saying it was very original and “I’ll never look at the beach creatures the same again!”

After publication, I was free to re-publish “Adolescence”. It’s almost 800 words and sells for $0.99. Yep, another very short story. I’ve now re-released “Adolescence” electronically at Amazon.com, Smashwords.com, and Universal Link!

Never doubt an alien fortuneteller! Shandelle is a happy-go-lucky teenager who is preoccupied with normal teenager concerns. But what will she do when she learns that her perfect world will soon come to an end?

Now for my “Tidbit From Real Life”: so, not actually from “real” life, but it concerns something from Star Trek, one of my all time favorite TV shows... and movies. After Star Trek’s three seasons, the mystery of what the “T” stands for in James T. Kirk is finally revealed. The “T” is for Tiberius... a most unusual name.

In PUSHES UP DAISIES, Sedona sees Sheriff Doug’s nameplate and wonders what does the T. stands for in Dugan T. Marino.

Doug says, “I wish I could say T. stands for Tiberius, but I can’t. It’s Thomas.”

Her reply. “I like Thomas. But it’s too bad you can’t be an emperor of Rome. Or even Admiral James T. Kirk.”

Here’s my “Tidbit From Real Life”: Dr. Harrison Oakdale, or rather Dr. Harrison James Oakdale, is a celebrity psychiatrist who questions Sedona on the origin of her name. When she asks about his name, he says, “I was named after my great great grandfather, James Harrison Oakdale. My parents just switched the names around, to dub me Harrison James Oakdale.” One of my great great grandfathers was also named James Harrison... James Harrison Knight, not Oakdale! James served twice in the American Civil War. After being released due to a leg injury, he then re-enlisted and became a captain in the 2^nd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. In 1865, he was mustered out of service at Nashville, TN.

For my “Tidbit From Real Life” that I always like to include in my books, I’ll tell you about an inside joke. Dr. Harrison Oakdale is a celebrity psychiatrist with a little too much ego for his own good. When he sees what he thinks is an interloper on his vacation rental land, he assumes she, Sedona, is there to provide him with a night of pleasure--a celebrity groupie. Then he spots a book cover by her side that is identical to one of his bestsellers. I’ll let Harrison describe his first encounter with Sedona:

“Of course, you’re reading the perfect book.” He gestured to the hardcover on the dock, next to her lounger chair, and then smirked.

Sure, he was bragging, but he was entitled to gloat every now and then.

What would happen if someone offers an incorrect sacrifice to the Roman God Neptune?

That is the premise of my latest time-travel Regency, THE MYSTIC AND THE MARQUESS! Roman... and Greek Gods seem to be very prickly when it comes to Humans, and get easily offended by these natives of Earth. Oftentimes, catastrophic wars are fought just because a person innocently says he prefers one god over another. In our case here with THE MYSTIC AND THE MARQUESS, Neptune gets riled up because our heroine, Gwendolyn, offered up to him by a villainess, isn’t an actual virgin. Quelle horreur!

The Marquess of Sheffield, Nigel Nelson, isn’t exactly hospitable when he comes across Gwendolyn. He thinks the worst of her. For me, as the author, it was very interesting to watch his transformation from haughty landowner to ardent lover!

SHE’S REALLY NOT A MYSTIC

After being drugged at a bon voyage party, Gwendolyn wakes up someplace... and sometime else. The someplace is an English farm on the Marquess of Sheffield’s estate; the sometime is 1819. Impossible, but true. While she tries to figure out what happened and how she can get back to her own time, she helps the tenant farmers with some of their health concerns. Because of this, she is called a mystic and is highly thought of by the villagers. However, she has an unpleasant run in with the hostile lord of the manor, Nigel Nelson. He even plans to send her back to the Americas as a galley slave. Gwen is completely powerless until she can convince the Marquess that she really is the mystic as foretold in the Sheffield legend. Will she be able to change this haughty aristocratic lord’s mind?

HE REALLY IS A MARQUESS

Nigel Nelson, the Marquess of Sheffield, learns that there is an untrustworthy mystic taking advantage of his many tenants who live on the Sheffield estate. Protective of his people, he is determined to evict the woman from his lands. Before he can carry out his threat, he gets bitten by a pugnacious pug and must depend on Gwendolyn to heal his dog bites. Now for a real life tidbit.

Like Nigel’s mother Eloise, who focused her all on her first love: oil painting, I also painted for a time. Frankly, I wasn’t as good as the Dowager Marchioness, but I did give it my all, too! Below is an oil I did to complement my new dining table and chairs. Oh, it was such a huge painting! I loved it. I actually created the frame and stretched the canvas. The picture below is from my photo album because I have no idea where that painting is today.

Here’s a passage from THE MYSTIC AND THE MARQUESS that shows Eloise’s devotion to her work:

“Just look at that gorgeous picture over your fireplace,” Gwen said.

The Marchioness blinked her dark blue eyes. “You... You like my painting? Truly? You don’t think it’s juvenile? Full of blobs and smears?”

“What? No! Not at all. This painting is in a... a style that will be very popular in the future. An impressionist style. People will love it.”

“Oh! Oh! This is my creation, you know. Oh, I’m having palpitations.” The Marchioness patted at her chest above the fancy gown she wore. “Do give me my vinaigrette. It’s on the table next to the teapot. Aromatic smelling salts will set me right.”

So Lady Sheffield was the ahead-of-her-time artist. How bizarre was that?

After a few sniffs, the woman settled down. “You have no idea how much your words mean to me, Miss Scott. Indeed, I live and breathe for my painting. Why doesn’t Nigel understand me? He cannot abide my work. And Walter, my other son, cannot, as well. Why must they be so vile?”

She dotted at her eyes with a linen handkerchief. “I’ve a mind to run away to Paris. Someplace to feed my muse.”
