As one corporal lays dying, he asks for her help. But how can she possibly help a ghost?

Jake Mantree is a hired hand on the very plantation his ancestors lost after the Civil War. A brooding loner, he resents northerner Rebecca’s winning ways. But he doesn’t count on her Yankee perseverance nor a Union ghost who has plans to make them fall in love over the holiday.

This short story is dedicated to four of my great grandfathers times two and four of my great grandfathers times three who fought in our American Civil War.

Time for another Tasty Recipe Treat from one of my Romance Writing with a Twist novels! Today, we'll take a peak at my paranormal romantic suspense at Awe-Struck Publishing--2007 Dream Realm Finalist, COMPETITORS!

In COMPETITORS!, both Vivianne and Max enjoy Chicken Pad Thai. Try this different version of this classic dish from Thailand and see if you don’t fall in love with it, too!

CHICKEN PAD THAI TO THE MAX!

1 T. peanut butter, creamy
1 T. soy sauce
1 t. Asian chili paste
1 T. water
3 T. peanut or cooking oil
1 t. garlic powder
1 t. ginger powder
1 c. carrots
1 boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into thin strips
¾ lb. linguine, cooked
1 T. brown sugar
1 T. cider vinegar
2 cups bean sprouts
Chopped peanuts for topping

* Mix peanut butter, soy sauce, chili paste and water together until smooth. Set aside.
* Heat pan or wok over medium heat, then add oil.
* Once hot, stir in ginger and garlic and cook for one minute.
* Add carrots and chicken to stir-fry for about three minutes.
* Add noodles. Stir, and continue to cook.
* Add peanut/chili sauce, brown sugar and cider vinegar. Stir to coat.
* Serve with bean spouts and top with chopped peanuts.

Another Mouthwatering Monday Recipe!! This one is from my popular Regency and EPPIE Finalist for Best Historical Romance, 2003, THE MAGIC TOKEN, now available at Uncial Press.

Marcus Hamilton's (the Duke of Yarborough), brother and sister love the taste of sweet jelly tarts. This recipe is easy to prepare and has all the sugary flavor the Hamiltons’ enjoy!

DAPHNE & GREGORY’S JELLY-TARTS

or Strawberry Tarts

1/2 packet of prepared pie crust mix
1 egg
1/4 c. sugar
1/8 t. salt
2 T. butter, melted
1/3 c. strawberry jam

* Prepare pastry as directed on package except divide dough into 6 equal parts.
* Shape each into ball, then roll into 4 inch circle.
* Grease muffin tin, then arrange dough in muffin cups.
* In small bowl, beat remaining ingredients, then divide into muffin cups.
* Bake about 30 minutes or until filling is set and pastry is brown.
* Cool.

So this means another Mouthwatering Recipe! Let's see what Minx Tobin is up to in Case One of the Minx Tobin Murder Mystery Series. In THE BLOODSTAINED BISTRO, Gabe surprises himself by inviting Minx out for dinner. Minx surprises herself by saying yes. While the “date” doesn’t end on a high note, Minx does enjoy her dinner. Be sure to try this version of La Boca Ardiente’s (The Burning Mouth) cheese enchiladas.

LA BOCA ARDIENTE'S CHEESE ENCHILADAS

1/2 c. monterey jack cheese, shredded
1/2 c. cheddar cheese, shredded
1/2 c. mozzarella cheese, shredded
1 taco seasoning packet
2 T minced onions
1 10 oz. bottle enchilada sauce
1/2 c. sour cream
8 flour tortillas

* Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
* Mix cheeses together. Set aside 1/4 cup of the mixture.
* Prepare taco season packet according to instructions.
* Add minced onions and enchilada sauce. Stir and cook for about 5 minutes.
* Remove from heat and add sour cream.
* In a square (8x8) baking dish, place 1/2 of sauce on bottom.
* Fill each tortilla with cheese mixture. Roll. Now place in baking dish.
* Pour the rest of sauce over tortillas, covering them completely.
* Now cover the tortillas with the remaining cheese mixture.
* Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.
* Enjoy!

LACE BROWNIES

In my best-selling futuristic science fiction romance with Wings ePress, ALIEN HEAT--impetuous Will Flagg loves the taste of lace brownies. You will too after you try these delicious cookies!

1 c. white sugar
1/2 t. salt
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 T. flour
1 c. quick cooking oatmeal
1 egg, beaten
1 square unsweetened chocolate
1/2 t. vanilla

* Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
* Using low heat, melt chocolate square.
* Mix ingredients in bowl to form batter.
* Cover cookie sheet with aluminum foil.
* Drop teaspoon of batter on sheet and press down a bit.
* Bake until golden brown, about ten minutes.
* Remove, then cool.
* Peel cookies from foil and store in a covered tin to keep crisp.

Good morning and welcome to the debut of my Mouthwatering Monday collection of Romance Writing with a Twist recipes. Each Monday (fingers crossed!) I'll post a recipe specifically created for one of my books.

Today, I'll start with COCONUT CONCOCTION CAKE -- a delicious dessert (and family favorite!) based upon my paranormal romantic suspense THE COMING, a Dream Realm Award WINNER.

COCONUT CONCOCTION CAKE

In my paranormal romantic suspense at Awe-Struck Publishing--2004 Dream Realm WINNER, THE COMING--coconuts are plentiful on the desert island. Larissa uses coconut shreds, tern eggs, goat milk, and ground nuts to create a mouthwatering concoction for Jack and his men. Here’s a scrumptious recipe that will make your mouth water too!

1 1/4 c. flour, sifted
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 t. baking powder
1 t. salt
1/2 c. butter, slightly melted
1 c. milk
2 eggs
1 t. vanilla extract
1c. flaked coconut

* Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
* In large bowl, sift flour with sugar, baking powder, and salt.
* Add butter and milk.
* Mix at low speed for 2 minutes.
* Add eggs and vanilla.
* Mix at low speed for 2 minutes.
* Stir in coconut, then pour batter into two greased 8-inch pans.
* Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until golden brown.

SCENE SET-UP:

An unexpected visitor, staying at the hotel where Elizabeth Williams works, asks for a glass of water. She realizes that she might possibly know him from twenty years ago.

EXCERPT:

From out of nowhere, she heard a knock. Or did she? Setting her bare feet down on the tiled floor, she held the front edges of the robe closed at her neck, then tiptoed to the door.

She checked the time. Ten o’clock. Who could be paying a visit at this hour?

The knock came again.

“Who’s there?”

No answer. She glanced through the peephole, but the magnified view was clear. “Hello?”

Still nothing.

She opened the door to a deliciously mild breeze... and that was it. No one stood on her front step, nor was anyone in sight. The stars twinkled down on her from a sky crystal black. It was quiet, so quiet that goose bumps made noise as they popped up on her skin.

The breeze couldn’t have been responsible for the knocking sound, could it?

About to turn back into the house, she stopped when she heard a man’s voice.

“Hello, there. Is anything wrong?” A tall shadowy figure left the gravel path winding around the colony of resort bungalows and headed toward her. “Do you need some help?”

Oh dear! Elizabeth clasped the edges of her robe even tighter. She definitely wasn’t dressed for company, especially male company, and someone she didn’t know.

“No, thank you. Everything’s fine.” She slipped back over the threshold.

Before she had a chance to close the door, the man had hurried, and now stood on the front step under the outside light fixture. “Pardon me, but aren’t you from the restaurant here?” He didn’t pause for her to reply. “I was wondering if I might have a glass of water. It’s a long walk from the main resort.”

She recognized him. It was the man from the patio who’d ordered the nachos. His eyes, from behind his glasses, were the most vivid green she’d ever seen. They seemed to sparkle at her, just as the stars had. His beard was neatly trimmed, accentuating his high cheekbones and oval face. He looked trustworthy, non-threatening. Plus he was a guest at Sol de Caliente.

Her decision made, she bit her lower lip. “Ah, sure. If you’ll wait here, I’ll get it.”

Pivoting on her heel, she rushed to the refrigerator and took out the water pitcher. She poured a glass, turned around, and then yelped. The man had followed her into the kitchen.

“Oh, I... you, ah, startled me.” She thrust the water at him. “Here.”

“Thanks. You’re very kind.” He took the glass. As he sipped, he slowly wandered into the living area. His keen gaze took everything in as if he was absolutely fascinated.

She tapped her bare toes against the tiled floor. “Look, I don’t want to be rude, but as you can tell I’m not exactly dressed to entertain. And I did not invite you in.”

His smile was warm and open. “True, but I didn’t think you’d mind. I’m curious about this little house you have.” He sniffed the air. “Do I smell lavender?”

The man had the temerity to make himself comfortable on the couch.

Still a safe distance away in the kitchen, she narrowed her gaze at him. “Yes, I took your advice about lavender oil for my sunburn. But, listen--”

“Paul.”

“Paul, I must insist you leave.”

He lifted an eyebrow as if waiting for something. What did he want?

Oh. “My name’s Elizabeth. Now please, if you don’t go, I’ll have to--”

“I know your name. I asked Jasmine. Lovely Lizzie suits you.”

Lovely Lizzie. As impossible as it sounded, the earth actually stopped spinning. At least, for Elizabeth it did. Although she would’ve sworn she had never seen this man before today, her vortex visions had reminded her. Only one person had ever called her Lovely Lizzie. Could this man possibly be the same Paul who had volunteered at the hospital with her twenty years ago?
