Current owner of Yolinda Animal Hospital, Dr Rana Olsen, announced the creation of a scholarship named after her predecessor “for exhibiting the compassion, tenacity, excellence and good nature necessary to one
day procure a veterinary medical degree”.

The first ever Gene E. Hofacre Scholarship for Future Veterinarians was awarded to Cara Smith, 24, of Rancho Cucamonga. Cara leaves California for Edinburgh, Scotland in July, where she will study veterinary medicine. She is currently employed at Yolinda Animal Hospital as a veterinary technician.

Dr Olsen said “Dr. Hofacre has enriched the lives of thousands of Orange County pet owners and their pets for almost half a century. The kindness he has shown me since my acquisition of Yolinda Animal Hospital is truly inspiring. There is no more appropriate tribute to him than the creation of a scholarship, and no more deserving a recipient than Cara. She has worked exceptionally hard and risen from intern to technician in less than a year, a unique and formidable achievement. I look forward to one day employing her as an associate veterinarian at Yolinda Animal Hospital.”

The winner of Jump the Line 2012 will receive roundtrip airfare to New York and two nights hotel accommodations in addition to being part of the first group to audition at Radio City Music Hall at Rockettes Open Auditions! During last night’s city council meeting, Mark Schwing stated that a notice of the upcoming Police Services Contract meeting scheduled for April 24th would be sent out to everyone in their water bill. According to the water district (un-verified), they informed city staff last week that there was not enough time to include notification.  Therefore, NO notices will be sent out.

Every year, the Royal Riders Pony Club sponsors a community fundraiser for the Shauna Ann Stuewe Foundation (www.shaunastuewe.com).

Six years ago, the Stuewe’s suffered a terrible tragedy when their daughter, Shauna, died of Sudden Cardiac Arrest while she was at cheer practice at Esperanza High School.  They have created a foundation in her memory whose mission is to place Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in all the schools.  Had there been easy access to one that day, there might have been a very different ending to their story.  They are committed to trying to keep other families from suffering the same fate.  To date, they have placed over 54 defibrillators and one has even been used to help save a life.

Each year, Pony Club asks it’s members to solicit sponsors for our egg hunt.  Each color egg has a different dollar value.  You can sponsor for as little as $5 for a pink egg, all the way up to a $50 golden egg and beyond for our mystery “black” eggs that can fetch up to $100 and beyond.   Each egg is labelled with the donor’s name and placed in the hunt.  The sponsor’s name is also featured in our program for the event.  This will be our third year.  In the past two years, the club was able to raise close to $10,000 total with almost 500 eggs sponsored.  Please become a part and sponsor an egg by visiting:  SpEGGtacular Charity Event .

We have changed the format this year so that we can involve the community more than ever.  We are hosting the event on Saturday,  March 31st from 9-12 p.m. at the Paxton Equestrian Center (18661 Buena Vista Ave., Yorba Linda).

We are featuring both dogs and horses.  There’s a dog and pony costume contest and egg games with both dogs and horses (Paws and Hooves) and an egg hunt for the little children ages 5 and under.  We will have a dog search and rescue demonstration, a police K9 unit, a dog microchip clinic and a fire truck.  The Girls Scouts will also have a booth there.  We are also hoping to have a wild mustang demonstration.

Sometimes I am truly amazed at the lack of compassion for other less fortunate. Today I read this story about how the city investigated St. Martin’s de Porres Church, which hosted Mercy House’s temporary shelter, after a resident complained. The Church’s parish was notified in writing on Feb. 13 that it violated city codes prohibiting shelters in residential areas.

February 9th St. Martin’s hosted a temporary shelter for approx 500 people. At least 2 local residents complained to the city. Leanne Mendez, 38, was glad to hear the church in her city could no longer hold shelters.

Yorba Linda resident Alex Howell, 39, is glad as well that the homeless won’t be going back to the church. He remembers walking to school and seeing people drunk outside liquor stores and injecting heroin while growing up in Hollywood.

Howell said half of his salary goes to the mortgage for the house he bought five years ago.

I think the city should let the church keep the temporary shelter operation. It is not an every day or every weekend event. It appears that it was a last resort because another schedule shelter was not available and they had no other choice.

The FBI was on the street this evening on Imperial passing out flyers seeking information. Daytripping Mom provided the flyer. The flyer has local contact but I mention the FBI as the person who was handed the flyer was stopped by the FBI while walking on Imperial Hwy and handed this flyer.

First of all HAPPY NEW YEAR! May 2012 bring back the Fiesta Days Parade to our Land of Gracious Living. We are planning our second Fiesta Days Organizational Meeting for January 26TH, 7pm at The Main Street Restaurant. I have attached a flyer for the meeting that I am asking you to forward to any and all interested parties. As you know this is quite an endeavor and the fact that it has been absent for the last few years only makes our task more difficult. You may not think you have the time to get involved, but your insight and opinions may be all we need to help move things along so I encourage you to attend and help us restore a part of Yorba Linda’s History and reward our citizens with the civic and community pride that will accompany the event.

We have inspiring plans for the parade and will transform it into a showcase event for the City and its residents all that is missing is you.
