Session 12 Lay Counseling Training last October 20, 2026

2026-10-20T07:30:00.000-07:00

Key Outcomes

The session established that God’s care is both personal (individual) and corporate (family, church, nation), and that this care is the foundation for healing damaged hearts and finding purpose. 1 The primary theological framework presented is that every person is fearfully and wonderfully made by God, designed for His glory, and known intimately from conception through old age. 234

Theological Framework

Holistic Approach: Counseling should be theological and doctrinal, using scriptures as the overriding principle, while filling gaps with theistic science (psychology, sociology, anthropology) and cultural context to understand the counselor and counselee holistically. 5
Creation and Design: God is the personal creator who "knit" individuals together in the womb; therefore, every person is designed with purpose, regardless of the circumstances of their conception. 16
Purpose of Existence: Humans are created for God’s glory; intellectual or material achievements should not lead to pride, as all abilities are gifts from God. 3
Personal vs. Corporate Care: God cares for individuals (e.g., King David) and for corporate bodies (e.g., the nation of Israel, the family, the church). 1

How God Views the Individual

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: The complexity of human anatomy reflects God’s delicate and intricate design; strength and beauty are inherent because humans are created in God’s image. 27
Known and Planned: God saw the "unformed body" before birth and has recorded the days of a person's life in His book. 89
Valued and Remembered: God does not forget His creation; the relationship is described as a "chosen friend" rather than a slave, allowing for the revelation of spiritual mysteries. 1011
Apple of His Eye: A metaphor indicating that individuals are the focus of God’s attention and tender care, similar to the pupil of the eye. 1213

Healing and Emotional Needs

Barriers to Feeling Care: Unresolved issues like abandonment, rejection, and neglect can create core beliefs that hinder a person from acknowledging God’s love. 14
Jesus as the Identifier: Jesus identifies with human pain through His own experiences, including being a refugee and coming from a notorious place (Nazareth). 1516
Path to Healing: Damaged hearts can be healed by coming to Jesus, who is the "road to the heart of God." 1517

Practical Applications for Life and Counseling

Counselor Accountability: Counselors are more accountable to God than the counselee; they must pray for wisdom and empathy to ensure the counselee becomes "better, not bitter." 18
Daily Spiritual Practice: Acknowledge and thank God upon waking and before sleeping; sleep is presented as a God-given therapeutic time for physical and mental rejuvenation. 192021
Ministry in All Roles: Service to God is not limited to pastoral work; any role (housewife, teacher, lawyer, laborer) can be a ministry if done as a witness for Christ. 22
Security in God: Security should be placed in God rather than money; wealth is acceptable if used for God’s glory and missions. 23
Dealing with Fear: In times of crisis or spiritual attack, calling on the name of Jesus and the blood of Christ is presented as a way to find strength and protection. 24

Open Questions

The speaker noted that some biblical mysteries remain unfulfilled or not yet fully revealed, encouraging ongoing study of the scriptures. 25

Monday Womens Dgroup Meeting

2026-10-19T07:25:49.082-07:00

Key Outcomes

The group reviewed the biblical meaning of water baptism as a public declaration of faith and a symbolic death to the old self and resurrection to a new life in Christ. Members shared personal struggles, including parenting challenges, spiritual dryness, and the need for better time management and surrender to God's will. The meeting concluded with mutual encouragement and prayer for family, health, and spiritual growth.

Decisions Made

Water baptism is understood as a voluntary, public declaration of a believer's commitment to follow Jesus, not a means of salvation. 12
Salvation is by grace through faith alone, not by good works or baptism. 3
Following Christ requires putting Him first, even above family and one's own life, and carrying one's cross daily. 45

Personal Updates & Praise Reports

Jen completed her professorial accreditation and is praying for a successful interview. 6
Janice started a new job at PSA and is adjusting to the environment and routine. 7
Sara shared that her business sales have been good and she is preparing to open a new location. 89
Jen shared that her son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder level 1 and ADHD, and they are starting therapy. 10

Spiritual Struggles & Reflections

Sara expressed feeling spiritually dry and distracted, struggling to prioritize her spiritual life amidst family and work responsibilities. 1112
Janice shared the importance of spending time with God to feel the Holy Spirit's presence and avoid feeling lost. 1314
Jen encouraged the group to start each day with prayer and reading God's word to find strength and focus. 1516
Loudilee shared her struggle with balancing motherhood and ministry, including the challenge of inviting other families into her home. 1718

Prayer Requests

Jen's son: Provision for therapy and a good recovery process. 1920
Jen: Success in her professorial accreditation and favorable results. 1920

Loudilee: Consider starting a Bible study with a friend and finding a way to balance family and ministry. 28

Session 11 Lay Counseling Training last October 17, 2026

2026-10-17T08:00:00.000-07:00

Key Outcomes

This session focused on Childhood Emotional Neglect (CEN) — its behavioral and emotional effects in adult life, and practical steps toward healing. The facilitator (Norma Gaston) drew extensively from personal experience and counseling cases to illustrate CEN's impact. A healing framework — Awareness + Acceptance + Direction + Overtime (IAAA) — was introduced as the core intervention model. Participants engaged in discussion connecting CEN to attitude problems, faith life, and interpersonal difficulty.

Decisions Made

Western interventions (e.g., confronting parents directly about CEN) are not recommended for Filipino cultural context due to enmeshed family systems and likely defensive responses 1
Emotions are not inherently good or bad — it is the behavior resulting from emotion that carries moral weight 2
Negative attention is preferable to no attention for CEN-affected individuals, explaining many attitude and behavioral problems 3

Key Effects of CEN in Adult Life

Difficulty identifying personal strengths, preferences, and interests 45
Low resilience — quitting jobs, relationships, or courses when challenged 56
No compassion for self; self-punishment behaviors (e.g., self-cutting, hitting walls) 78
Critical inner voice overriding positive feedback; fixation on negative evaluations 910
Guilt, shame, emotional numbness, and a persistent sense that "something is wrong" 1011
Difficulty with close relationships — avoiding intimacy, fearing rejection, putting up a false self 812
Alexithymia (poor emotional awareness): irritability, explosive anger, feeling fundamentally different from others 1314
Poor self-discipline: procrastination, lateness, disorganization, overreacting 1315

CEN and Faith Life

CEN directly affects spiritual life — difficulty trusting God often traces back to early relational wounds 1617
Case example: a pastor who could only pray by screaming, rooted in a childhood memory of screaming after an abandoning father — he believed God could not hear a quiet voice 1617
Knowledge of scripture does not automatically override faulty core belief systems formed by CEN 1819

Healing Framework: IAAA

Identify — name and journal the specific emotion 20
Accept — receive the feeling without judgment; discern its reason 20
Attribute — trace the source: CEN, pressure patterns, abuse, or spiritual issues 2021
Act — respond to what the emotion calls for, appropriately and assertively 2122
Healing equation: Awareness + Acceptance + Direction + Overtime — the "overtime" variable is known only to God; healing timelines vary by severity and age of damage 2324

Boundaries and Assertive Expression

Compassion toward CEN-affected individuals must be paired with clear personal boundaries — Module 8 will address this directly 25
Assertiveness means expressing feelings so the other person can receive them — not passive, not aggressive 22
Facilitator's personal example: setting firm household rules with a verbally abusive father while maintaining love and eventual care for him for 7 years 222627

Q&A Highlights

Q: Can CEN cause attitude problems? → A: Yes — attitude problems often mask overwhelming emotions, insecurity, weakness-concealment, or a bid for attention 31428
Q: Is being emotional negative? → A: No — emotions are God-given; emotional capacity enhances empathy 2930
Q: How long does healing take? → A: Unknown; only God determines timing — celebrate small changes as progress 2431
Q: Does CEN affect faith practice? → A: Definitively yes — soul wounds affect spirit and body; faulty belief systems persist even after salvation 1618

Pending Confirmation

Core belief system (faulty beliefs formed by past experience) to be addressed in the next session 18

Action Items

All participants: Submit outstanding reflection papers for all 12 modules — failure to do so may affect graduation 15
All participants: Begin applying the IAAA steps personally before the next session
Daisy: Seek Holy Spirit's grace as a corrective emotional experience for her roommate; apply boundary-setting principles from Module 8 2532

USeP and UB Online Session last October 16, 2026

2026-10-16T06:32:30.816-07:00

Key Outcomes

An international guest lecture by Elizabeth Neri Fiska (USeP) was delivered to Universitas Brawijaya (UB) students on Philippine international trade, covering trade structure, trading partners, tariff mechanisms, and ASEAN policy. The session also served as the second COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) meeting, with Dr. Jennifer introducing the ACE Project — a comparative economic analysis between the Philippines and Indonesia — including its three deliverables and timeline.

Decisions Made

Lecture scope confirmed: Focus on merchandise trade only; services trade and balance of payments explicitly excluded 1
ACE Project outputs defined: Three deliverables — comparative paper, infographic/poster, and a 2-minute video 23
Submission deadline: November 23 (Monday) for all outputs, ahead of the November 27 culmination/awarding ceremony 2
Topic uniqueness enforced: Groups must register titles on a shared Google Sheet to prevent duplicate topics across 26 groups 3
Zoom room kept open post-lecture for breakout group discussions; students not in the International Trade Course were designated visitors only 4

Philippine Trade: Key Data Points (2025)

Total merchandise exports: $84.48B; imports: $134.20B; trade deficit: –$49.72B 15
Export growth: +15.3% vs. 2024; import growth: +5.2% — deficit does not indicate declining exports 5
Top export: Electronic products at $45.89B (54.3% of total exports) 6
Top import sources: China ($38.44B), Japan ($10.63B), South Korea ($10.60B), Indonesia ($10.18B — 4th largest, 7.6% share) 7
Indonesia's ASEAN share: Supplied ~28.8% of Philippine imports from ASEAN members in 2025 8
Import composition: Raw/intermediate goods + capital goods = ~66.4% of total imports, reflecting productive rather than consumptive import patterns 9

Tariff Mechanics Covered

Ad valorem tariff: Duty = customs value × rate (e.g., 1,000 pesos × 20% = 200 pesos duty) 1011
Specific tariff: Duty = quantity × fixed amount per unit (e.g., 10 pairs × 20 pesos/pair = 200 pesos) 12
MFN rate: General WTO non-discriminatory rate applied to eligible partners 13
Preferential rate (ATIGA): Qualifying ASEAN-origin goods may access 0% duty; requires rules-of-origin compliance and documentation 1415
Key distinction: Tariff type (ad valorem vs. specific) and rate schedule (MFN vs. preferential) are separate questions — not additive charges 16

COIL ACE Project Structure

Paper: Comparative analysis of Philippines–Indonesia economic/trade indicators with theory-based explanation 17
Infographic: One-page visual comparison of chosen indicators 3
Video: 2-minute clip explaining the infographic; at least one Philippine and one Indonesian student should appear to reflect collaboration 18
Evidence required: Accomplishment report with screenshots of group meetings/chats 19
Communication: Most groups already active via WhatsApp; Zoom breakout rooms used for initial meetings 20

Action Items

Group leaders: Register unique project title on shared Google Sheet (before November 23) 3
All student groups: Submit paper, infographic, and video by November 23 2
Dr. Lina / Dr. Elizabeth / Dr. Jennifer: Evaluate outputs before November 27 culmination event 2
Dr. Lina: Save Zoom recording 21
Dr. Jennifer: Open and monitor breakout rooms; broadcast 5-minute warning before closing Zoom 22

Open Questions

Group 4 had no UB students assigned at session close — assignment gap to be resolved 23
Not all breakout room assignments were completed due to time constraints 4

Output	Keterangan
Makalah Komparatif	Perbandingan indikator perdagangan Indonesia–Filipina berdasarkan teori
Infografis	Satu halaman, visual ringkas perbandingan indikator pilihan
Video	Durasi maks. 2 menit, langsung ke pokok analisis, melibatkan mahasiswa kedua negara

Session 10 Lay Counseling Training last October 13, 2026

2026-10-13T06:50:55.234-07:00

Key Outcomes

The session introduced Childhood Emotional Neglect (CEN) as an invisible force shaping adult behavior, using a case study and a 22-item self-assessment questionnaire. Participants learned that scoring 6 or above "yes" answers indicates CEN, and that its effects — though rooted in childhood — manifest in adult life. The facilitator emphasized that healing is possible but is a long, ongoing process, with full healing reserved for heaven.

Decisions Made

No breakout rooms from Module 3 through Module 8; replaced with personal, confidential seatwork and reflection 1
Questionnaire results are not to be collected or shared — participants are not required to disclose their scores 2
From Module 9 onward, contemporary issues will be discussed in small groups 3

Key Concepts Covered

CEN is an invisible force: Unlike physical neglect, CEN leaves no visible signs and is rarely recognized — even by those who suffered it 4
Scoring threshold: 5 or below = no CEN; 6 or above = CEN present 5
"Running on Empty" (Dr. Jonice Webb) is the reference book for the module; available on Shopee for under ₱200 3
Counter-transference: If a counselor's own unresolved issues are triggered by a counselee, objectivity is compromised — a core reason self-processing is required 1
"You cannot pour from an empty cup": Counselors must process their own issues before effectively helping others 2
Governing scripts: Internalized beliefs (e.g., "I am stupid," "I am not lovable") formed in childhood that silently sabotage adult potential 6

12 Parenting Types That Cause CEN

Narcissistic, Authoritarian, Permissive, Bereaved, Addicted, Depressed, Workaholic, Parent with special-needs family member, Achievement/Perfection-focused, Sociopathic, Parentified child dynamic, and Well-meaning but self-neglected parents 789

Case Study Highlights (Carlito)

An 8-year-old hyperactive boy sent home with a note for talking back to his teacher 10
His mother modeled emotionally attuned parenting: listened first, validated feelings (embarrassed, frustrated, hard), named emotions, held him accountable without shaming 111213
Participants noted the mother's approach seemed "too good to be true" but confirmed it is doable 14
Key lesson: naming a child's emotion gives them vocabulary to self-regulate in the future 12

Q&A Highlights

Q (Michelle): How do you distinguish CEN from trauma like bullying?
A: CEN is caused by significant caregiving adults; bullying is a separate issue. The intake session ("Tell me about your childhood") helps trace root causes. Effects of CEN in adult life will be covered next Saturday. 1516
Q (Sarah): How long does healing take?
A: Depends on how hard one works; full healing does not happen on earth. One counselee has been in counseling for 5 years and is better but not fully healed. 1718
Q (Jonel): Is CEN the same as damaged emotions?
A: No — CEN is more specific; it is the umbrella under which the 7 pressure patterns and 4 abuse issues fall. These will be addressed in Modules 5 and 6. 1920
Q (Michelle): Can issues exist that did not stem from childhood?
A: There are 7 pressure patterns + 4 abuse issues = 12 emotional damage types to be covered in upcoming modules. 1921

Pending Confirmation

Full breakdown of effects of CEN on adult life — to be discussed next Saturday 22
7 pressure patterns + 4 abuse issues → 12 emotional damage types — covered in Modules 5 & 6 19

Action Items

All participants: Complete the CEN questionnaire honestly; reflect privately on results 23
All participants: Begin processing personal CEN with God in prayer; do not blame parents 2224
All participants: Optionally acquire Running on Empty by Dr. Jonice Webb for deeper reading 3

Session 9 Lay Counselling Training Session | October 10, 2026

2026-10-10T07:00:00.000-07:00

Key Outcomes

The session established that the family is the primary ministry for any believer, emphasizing that spiritual leadership at home must precede public ministry 1. Participants discussed the importance of unconditional love and the need for corrective emotional experiences to support children who have experienced the loss of a parent 23.

Biblical Examples of Attachment

Sarah and Isaac: Highlighted as an example of long-awaited attachment 4.
Rebecca and Jacob: Used to warn against favoritism, which creates emotional unfairness among children 4.
Mary and Jesus: Exemplified the "Holy Family" and the importance of not rushing into public ministry, as Jesus waited 30 years 45.
Lois, Eunice, and Timothy: Demonstrated the power of family-led scriptural education in preparing a child for ministry 5.
The Prodigal Son: Illustrated the necessity of unconditional love and the role of a father in maintaining an unbreakable emotional attachment 25.

Principles for Parenting and Ministry

Priority of Home: Leaders must manage their own families effectively to be fit for church or mission work; the family is the "first member" of one's ministry 16.
Spiritual Responsibility: Based on Genesis 18, fathers are responsible for directing their households to keep the way of the Lord 2.
Balance: Believers must balance family and ministry to prevent children from viewing the church or God as a "rival" 6.
Spiritual Warfare: The family that fears God is a primary target for Satan, who seeks to steal joy and destroy relationships 7.

Guidance for Fatherless Children

Corrective Emotional Experience: For children missing a father, it is recommended to find a positive male role model (e.g., a relative, church leader, or neighbor) to provide emotional strength 38.
Non-Biological Support: Support does not have to be blood-related; "adopted" spiritual parents can serve as corrective emotional figures 3.
Handling Grief: Children, especially eldest children who had strong bonds with a deceased parent, may require more time and patience to develop new attachments 910.

Key Outcomes

This was the first-ever joint meeting of Davao Pag-asa Toastmasters Club and Butuan Toastmasters Club, held on October 1st with an Oktoberfest theme. 1 The meeting covered a full Toastmasters program including a food-for-thought segment, table topics, a formal speech, and a comprehensive evaluation block. Four guests attended and expressed interest in joining future meetings. 2 The Area Director announced the Area Contest on January 16, 2027, and the Division Contest on February 13, 2027, both to be held in Davao City. 3

Decisions Made

First joint meeting officially called to order by DTM Babes Kabedian (President, Davao Pag-asa) on behalf of both clubs. 1
Toastmaster of the Evening: TM Jen (Area Director) led the full meeting program. 4
Area and Division contests confirmed: Area Contest – January 16, 2027; Division Contest – February 13, 2027, Davao City (Grand Regal Hotel, Pantawag Hall). 3
Clubs advised to hold club contests in November or December to prepare for the area contest. 3

Program Highlights

Food for Thought – TM Julie Aguilar shared the history of Oktoberfest (originated in 1810 Munich as a royal wedding celebration) and drew a parallel to the Filipino tradition of early Christmas celebrations starting in September. 56
Table Topics led by TM Eunice Serrano (Finance District Finance Manager); four speakers participated: 7
- TM Rex – described his personality as "sweet and sour fish" 8
- DTM Babes – proposed a tree-planting festival in Davao featuring rare fruit-bearing trees (e.g., siniguelas, ilang-ilang) 910
- TM Crevi – shared attending a District Convention while breastfeeding her newborn (1999) 1112
- TM Jojo – recounted being stranded without money or phone in Bangkok on New Year's Day, walking back to her hotel alone 13
Formal Speech – TM Rex Parro delivered his Level 1, Project 2 speech titled "Slow Beat: One Day of Laughter, One Morning of Tears" — a personal narrative about a family Sunday that ended with the death of their puppy, Bobit. 1415

Evaluations

Table Topics Evaluator – TM Dino Lingat: Noted speakers used varied patterns (AREM, SMG, AIDA); advised more concrete conclusions and use of visual/gestural presence on Zoom; recommended flashing timer colors on screen. 161718
Speech Evaluator – TM Venus Roque: Praised TM Rex's organization and inspirational purpose; suggested stronger vocal variety, standing posture for presence, faster pacing in the opening, and a clearer closing message. 192021
Grammarian – TM Crevi Culada: One grammatical floor noted ("I was tired" tense issue); reminded speakers to use past tense for past events, "with regard to" (not "with regards"), and plural after "one of the." 22 Gems noted: "What we celebrate today is the memory to cherish tomorrow" and "Cherish the moment with your loved ones while you still can." 22
Timer/Accounter – TM Venus Roque: DTM Babes (2:54) and TM Crevi (2:45) exceeded table topics time; TM Rex's formal speech landed at exactly 7 minutes; filler words flagged for TM Jen (3× "tonight"), TM Eunice (2× "that"), DTM Babes (3 ums, 1 ah), TM Dino (3 "r"s, 1× "over"). 2324
General Evaluator – DTM Babes: Commended TM Julie's prepared and on-theme food-for-thought; flagged that absent role-players (Anything Goes, Word Master) were not communicated to the TMOE in advance; praised the meeting's smooth flow overall. 252627

Pending Confirmation

Division X Butuan Visit 2026 Core Group Online Meeting last September 26, 2026

2026-09-26T08:30:00.000-07:00

Key Outcomes

Planning is underway for a September 30 visit to Butuan combining three activities: a demo meeting at Father Saturnino Urios University (FSU/Oreo) at 1:00 PM, a meeting with the LGU/City Mayor's Office at approximately 3:30 PM, and an installation of officers in the evening at 6:30 PM. 1 Role assignments for the demo meeting are partially identified but not yet finalized. Attendance confirmation from Downtown Butuan Toastmasters remains the critical blocker, particularly regarding President Hemadi and VP Gilbert. 23

Decisions Made

Demo meeting format: Follow the Digos program template (district-issued); roles include Toastmaster of the Day, Grammarian, Ah-Counter/Timer, Table Topics, Prepared Speech, and General Evaluator. 45
Direk Bobby to deliver the prepared speech (same speech used in Digos); confirmed willing to repeat it if no other speaker is available. 67
Installation venue: Leaning toward Balangay Hotel (where the club holds regular meetings); Amara also considered as an alternative for overnight stay. 89
Travel plan: Depart Davao by 5:00 AM on September 30 to arrive in Butuan by approximately 10:00–11:00 AM. 8
Installation deadline: Must be completed by end of September per district directive (Suzette's guidance). 10
Presentation materials: Use Direk Bobby's short, straightforward Tagum template rather than the lengthy Rainer PowerPoint; fewer words preferred. 1112

Role Assignments (Demo Meeting — Partial)

Call to Order / Speech: Direk Bobby 6
General Evaluator: Tm Jed (if available from Butuan) 13
Evaluator of Speech: VP Gilbert (confirmed willing) 14
Toastmaster of the Day: Ephrelyn (tentative) 13
Grammarian / Ah-Counter / Timer: Jen (dual role if needed) 15
Table Topics: Preferably assigned to a Downtown Butuan member 16

Installation Program Flow

Discharging of outgoing officers → Induction of new members → Acceptance speech → Valedictorian address 1718
Keynote speaker: Sir Jed proposed; Direk Bobby to confirm his availability. 1920
If President Ched is absent, Vice President to deliver the valedictory speech. 17
Roasting/tribute segment (Table Topics style) before valedictory address is optional and can be removed. 21
Program estimated to start at 6:30 PM. 22

Blockers & Risks

Downtown Butuan attendance unconfirmed: President Hemadi unresponsive; Gilbert is the primary point of contact but has limited availability. 223
Ma'am Jojo and Ma'am Ched are out of town and cannot confirm attendance for September 30. 1524
Low headcount risk: Demo meeting requires sufficient numbers to make a credible impression on FSU; showing up with only 3–4 people is not acceptable. 2526
Wednesday is a workday, limiting availability of LGU employees and school contacts for the demo. 27
Caraga State University contact (Rex Paro) not responding; university has exam week, reducing student availability. 28

Pending Confirmation

Sir Jed's availability to fly in from Butuan as keynote speaker. 19
Final headcount from Downtown Butuan (target: at least 4 members). 29
Mayor's schedule confirmation by Monday (Ma'am Crevi to follow up with Gem). 30
FSU/Oreo permit: names of all attendees must be submitted in advance. 26
Hotel booking: Direk Bobby to check Amara via friend; Ephrelyn to ask Tm Addi (Inland manager) about a discount. 31
Charter fee status for Oreo club: PHP 7,000 confirmed as within budget; individual membership fees are separate. 32

Action Items

Jen: Convert demo meeting program to editable Word/Google Docs format; share via Google Drive for role input by members. 2933
Jen: Send attendee name list to FSU/Oreo by Monday for permit processing. 26
Jen: Request soft copy of materials and flyer from PRM Charity for distribution at the demo. 33
Jen / Ephrelyn: Follow up with Downtown Butuan members (Gilbert, Hemadi) to confirm participation by Monday. 26
Direk Bobby: Text Hemadi directly — ask if installation is pushing through for both Butuan and Downtown clubs. 334
Direk Bobby: Contact Sir Jed to confirm keynote availability for installation. 19
Direk Bobby: Check Amara hotel rates via personal contact; share hotel details once confirmed. 9
Ma'am Crevi: Message Sir Jed to confirm keynote; get mayor's schedule confirmation by Monday. 1830
Ephrelyn: Individually call/confirm role-takers for demo meeting by Monday night. 35

ARISE International Lecture Series on Big Data and Time Series Models by Prof. Yoonsuk Lee of Kangwon National University last September 22, 2026

2026-09-21T20:22:29.696-07:00

Key Outcomes

Professor Yoonsuk Lee provided a comprehensive lecture on the evolution of agricultural big data in South Korea, the distinction between machine learning and traditional econometrics, and the practical application of time series models like ARIMA for agricultural forecasting 123.

Agricultural Big Data Evolution in Korea

The transition of agricultural data in South Korea occurred in four distinct stages:

Stage 1 (1990s–early 2000s): Conversion of paper records to digital databases and computerized administrative work 4.
Stage 2: Introduction of RFID and ubiquitous sensor networks for continuous monitoring and traceability (e.g., beef supply chains) 5.
Stage 3 (2013–2019): Expansion of smartphone technology and the rise of "Smart Farms," particularly in Gangwon province for crops like cabbage and paprika 67.
Stage 4: Current focus on digital transformation and AI innovation to integrate fragmented data across production, distribution, and consumption 8.

Big Data Characteristics and Challenges

The 3 Vs: Big data is defined by Volume (scale), Velocity (speed of arrival), and Variety (different formats) 9.
Biological Variability: Unlike industrial data, agricultural data is uniquely challenged by biological variability, where the same inputs can produce different outputs due to soil, weather, and growth stages 1011.
Data Quality: AI cannot fix "poor data"; errors in raw data collection (e.g., incorrect labor records) will persist in the AI output 12.

Modeling Approaches: Machine Learning vs. Econometrics

Machine Learning (ML): Effective for large datasets with complex, non-linear relationships and high dimensionality 2.
Econometrics: Preferred for causal identification, precise explanation, and interpretable parameters 13.
Supervised Learning: Uses labeled data to map inputs to known outputs (e.g., price prediction or disease classification) 14.
Unsupervised Learning: Finds hidden patterns or groups without pre-defined labels (e.g., clustering farmers by characteristics to tailor government policy) 1516.
Selection Criteria: Traditional econometric models are recommended over ML if the dataset is small (e.g., only 30 observations) because ML requires splitting data into training and testing sets, further reducing the available learning data 1718.

Time Series Analysis and ARIMA

Core Principle: The order of observations is critical; randomly reorganizing time series data destroys essential information 1920.
Stationarity: A requirement for many models where the statistical behavior remains stable over time. Non-stationary data is typically handled through differencing or log transformations 212223.
ARIMA Model: A basic univariate model consisting of Autoregressive (AR), Integrated (I), and Moving Average (MA) components 2425.
Outlier Modeling: Mention of the "outlier model" to catch structure breaks in data, a topic further explored in Professor Jennifer's research 2627.

Practical Guidance for Students

Missing Data: For small amounts of missing data, an average of nearby variables (e.g., 3-year or 5-year average) can be used, provided the result is compared against the original regression to ensure similarity 2829.
Workflow: Students are advised to plot data visually first to identify trends and seasonality before applying AI or complex models 2330.
Consultation: Students are encouraged to consult their professors rather than relying solely on AI for model selection 31.

Monday DGroup Meeting last September 21, 2026

2026-09-21T06:30:39.334-07:00

Key Outcomes
The group completed the second session of Book 2, focusing on the Bible as the primary source of spiritual guidance and the "Creator's manual for living" 1. Participants shared personal praise reports, discussed inspiring biblical characters, and committed to implementing the Obedience-Based Bible Study (OBBS) method to foster spiritual growth 2.

Biblical Foundations
The session outlined five primary reasons for believing in the Bible 3:
- Truth: Fulfillment of approximately 2,000 of 2,500 prophecies, including over 350 regarding Jesus 1.
- Unity: Written by over 40 authors across three languages and three continents over 1,500 years with a single unifying theme: Jesus Christ 4.
Accuracy: Validated by ancient manuscripts, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, which show identical similarity to modern texts 5.
Divine Inspiration: Viewed as "God's breath" (theognostos), where the Holy Spirit led human authors to speak words from God 67.
Transforming Power: Demonstrated through the supernatural ability to reform lives and change characters throughout history 7.

Purpose and Application of Scripture

The group discussed why believers should follow the Bible, noting its utility in four key areas 89:

Teaching: Providing sound doctrine and comprehensive knowledge of God's truth 10.
Rebuking: Convicting believers of misbehavior and exposing ungodly conduct 10.
Correcting: Straightening out errors and providing the right understanding of truth 10.
Training: Instructing believers on how to live righteously to please God 10.

Spiritual Discipline and OBBS Method

To avoid the common pitfall of acquiring biblical knowledge without growth, the group introduced the Obedience-Based Bible Study (OBBS) method 2:

Process: Read $\rightarrow$Interpret $\rightarrow$Obey/Action 2.
Goal: To move beyond hearing or writing to active application in daily life 2.
Example: Using a "Story-Message-Gain" pattern to relate a personal experience to a verse and derive a practical life lesson 11.

Personal Reflections and Commitments

Participants shared favorite biblical characters and their personal "I will" commitments:

Inspiring Characters: Job (faith despite loss), Joseph (integrity and forgiveness), David (repentance), and Esther (faith in difficulty) 121314.
Individual Commitments:
- Janice: Restart journaling to help meditate on the Word 15.
- Sara: Become more intentional with time management to read the Bible regularly 16.
- Weng: Move from taking screenshots to physically writing notes in a journal to enhance learning 17.
- Loudilee: Commit to meditating on the Word day and night 18.

Action Items

All Participants: Practice the OBBS method daily as a session assignment 19.
