Here’s what to know about the new Fuel Up Friday deal and how to make it work for you:

Every Friday from April 3 through May 29, Amazon Prime members can save 20¢ per gallon at participating BP and Amoco stations, plus select AMPM and Thorntons locations. The catch is that the full 20¢ discount is one-time use each Friday, so it’s best to plan your fill-up around it.

The discount stacks automatically once everything is set up. There’s a base 5¢ off through BP’s rewards system, another 5¢ for being a Prime member, and then an extra 10¢ added during the promotion window. That’s how it reaches the full 20¢ per gallon.

To use it, you’ll need to connect your Amazon account to BP’s rewards system through the earnify app. Once linked, you can activate the discount at the pump just by entering your phone number or using the app directly.

Outside of Fridays, Prime members still get 10¢ off per gallon year-round, which comes from that same 5¢ + 5¢ combination. There’s no minimum or maximum on gallons, so it works whether you’re topping off or filling up completely.

The earnify app itself is optional, but it does make things easier. It helps you find participating stations nearby and lets you track rewards or savings over time.

For anyone already paying for Prime, this is one of those perks that’s actually worth remembering—especially if you time your fill-ups right.

One thing I learned not long ago was how to consign clothes for sale in order to better afford new ones. This is also a great way to ensure your closet, drawers, and other storage areas are clutter-free.

Let’s dive into the best way to learn how to consign clothes. You can earn money easily, reduce clutter, and make room for new styles. 

Before heading to my first consignment store, I researched and had lengthy conversations with multiple store owners throughout Baltimore. Each store is different in terms of what it’s looking for, but here are a few tips for successful consigning:

How to sell to consignment shops

Call first. Many consignment stores will only take designer names, and most will take clothes by appointment only. Some fill up so quickly that they won’t meet with you until they’re ready for more stock. Calling first saves you time, energy, and frustration. 

Think about the time of year. Most consignment shops take only in-season clothes. It’s best to plan as early as possible because, just like other stores, consignment stores put clothes out on the racks seasonally. They may already have spring/summer clothing out, even though it’s still winter coat weather.

Make sure your clothes are washed and wrinkle-free. Most places will not take your used garments if they have the slightest stain.  If you have even just a couple of wrinkles, they will most likely ask you to get your piece dry-cleaned before bringing it back.

Start with some of your best pieces. That way, the next time you call, the store owner may be more inclined to meet with you sooner rather than later.

Don’t have any expectations. Don’t put a price on a piece of clothing unless you’re considering keeping it. The store owners know their own inventory and customers best, so leave the pricing up to them. Also, don’t expect them to like a piece of clothing as much as you might. It’s best to come to the store owners with an open mind.

Find out how and when you will receive payment. Each store works differently. Some may cut you a check for every item sold, or some may decide to cut you a check for items sold within a given period. They may even be able to set it up to pay you electronically. Also, not all stores will offer cash for your clothes – some may offer only store credit. Decide which one is more important.

Don’t bring anything to consign that you wouldn’t buy yourself. You are truly your best critic. If you bought something on a whim with unusual patterns or that was part of a trend that has been out of style for quite some time, consigning the item may not work. Most consignment store owners are very selective.

Every time I have consigned my clothing, it’s been a huge success. I continue to donate pieces I can’t consign to local charities. Working with a new consignment store to sell clothing is definitely a process, but it’s worthwhile. Who doesn’t love having extra spending money in exchange for something that could be just collecting dust?

The prices are automatically discounted at the store, so there is no need for coupons, rebates, codes, memberships, or anything else. You just have to head to Aldi, grab the items off the shelf, and check out at the register.

While we do try to have factual information, be sure to verify deadlines, dates, times, and information for your specific student and state. The only way to get 100% factual information is directly from the FAFSA source, which we’ve linked to below. 

What’s the FAFSA? It is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and it is the only way that families can apply for federal and state financial aid, along with college financial aid. Most of the information you’ll need for the FAFSA will come from your tax returns. But since you probably haven’t done your 2024 return yet, you can use your 2023 federal return to get the details to complete the form.

Every parent should fill out the FAFSA, even if you think your income is too high to qualify for financial aid. While a higher income may disqualify you from obtaining need-based aid, if you want to apply for loans to help pay for college, you need that FAFSA done.

To get started, head over to the FAFSA website. Make sure you have the one that ends in .gov; that is the official FAFSA site.

Once there, I recommend clicking on the “FAFSA Deadlines” section on the home page. While the federal FAFSA deadline for 2025-26 isn’t until 11:59 p.m. Central time on June 30, 2026, every state has a different FAFSA deadline and you’ll need to know yours.

If your child is attending a state school – or even if you want to apply for state-level financial aid – you need to make sure that your FAFSA is filed on time.

In addition, each college may have a completely different FAFSA deadline from the state where you live, so you need to keep that in mind as well. Some could be as early as mid-February.

Note: Some private colleges want you to fill out what’s called a CSS/PROFILE form for financial aid, too. That is done through the College Board. Unlike the FAFSA, the CSS/PROFILE asks for detailed financial information about your home, mortgage, retirement accounts and more. While colleges aren’t supposed to consider this “wealth” when assessing your child for financial aid, there is nothing stopping them from asking, and you would be wise to answer their questions and answer them truthfully – even if they do feel invasive and annoying.

You’ll also need to have your child’s Social Security number handy to get the FAFSA started. Make sure you enter it correctly in the proper place. According to the handbook that guides Federal Student Aid partners, the SSN on the application is checked against the records of the Social Security Administration. If they don’t match, the application would be rejected.

Also, the name on the application should match the one on the student’s Social Security card. Clearing up either error means dealing with the Social Security Administration and possibly submitting a new FAFSA. And losing a lot of time.

You should budget 30 to 60 minutes for filling out the FAFSA, assuming that you have the most recent year’s federal income tax return handy. Note to self: Find that tax return before you start the FAFSA. Once you have it, you should be able to plug in all the numbers the FAFSA requires pretty quickly. It is understood that these are just estimates of incomes, based on past income tax returns. You are advised to file your 2025 federal tax return as soon as you can, and online, so that three weeks later you can go back to the FAFSA website and use the “income tax retrieval” option, which will auto-fill your current information from the IRS.

You may be tempted to put off the FAFSA until your tax return is finished. But you really can’t, because of those aforementioned state and college deadlines.

If you can’t get a solid hour to finish this online form, you can always start the FAFSA, save what you’ve done, and come back to it. Just don’t miss those deadlines.

And speaking of coming back, parents need to come back and do a new FAFSA for every year they will have a child in college – and for each child.

Once you buy the Sam’s club membership, it’s good for one year. When you sign up for this offer, you authorize auto-renewal. However, if you decide before the year is up that you don’t want to renew, you can contact Sam’s Club and have them cancel it. (A good way to remember to cancel auto-renewals is to put a reminder on your calendar a week  before the membership is set to renew.)

More likely, if you’re like me, you’ll just renew year after year. We save so much at Sam’s it makes the membership fee a bargain.

Here’s the deal. I was skeptical, too, at first. But just hear me out. Here are a few things I buy monthly at Sam’s Club that I ALWAYS save money on.

• Toilet paper
• Protein bars

These are just a few of the items. Just like any place, you have to look at the prices and verify, but it’s no secret that buying in bulk really does save money. 

Why buy in bulk? 

It’s true – you don’t have to buy everything in bulk. That being said, there are some things that I LOVE buying in bulk because I get tired of running to the store every so often. 

I find that buying coffee in bulk keeps me sane in the morning. 

• Buying flour in bulk means that I can always use my breadmaker to make homemade bread. 
• Cottage cheese in bulk keeps my protein intake high.
• Toilet paper in bulk is self-explanatory.
• Large bags of coleslaw for less than $3 are a great addition to stir-fries, salads, and more. I always have it on hand! 

Do I buy everything in bulk? No. Do I buy enough things in bulk to justify the $2 per month cost? Absolutely.

How long will I get to keep the books?

Literally forever once you download them to your Kindle app. It’s that easy! Just make sure that you are checking the pricing – and that you are sure that they are FREE.

Best easy fundraising ideas for tight budgets

If you have an organization that needs to raise money for a cause, here are several fundraising ideas to consider. Most of these are not difficult to setup, organize, or complete. We arranged them in order of easiest and least cost to ones requiring more organization ability and some supplies or upfront costs.

Quick fundraising ideas

If you are new to fundraising, start with first few easier methods. If you are a veteran moneymaker, you might find some fresh fundraising ideas to your current approach. Finally, be sure to check with your state or local gaming commission for any rules you might need to follow in order to fundraise legally in your area.

Containers, envelopes, and website buttons

When you need to raise money, one of the easiest things you can do is simply to ask for it. While this is stating the obvious, make sure you are asking in all the right places: use donation containers, donation envelopes, and a website donation button.

• Donation containers (aka “penny drive”). Place coin collection containers in appropriate locations to collect lose change. This method works best if you can place containers in places where there is a steady stream of people who might have lose change to donate to a good cause. Examples of good locations include the counter at a coffee shop or local retail store within the community. The containers should be well-marked and emptied regularly. While this option isn’t practical for everyone, if it is available to you, be sure to use it. This option works best for fundraising projects of fairly short duration.
• Donation envelopes. Envelopes work best for organizations like churches and schools, but any nonprofit can benefit from using them. Envelopes can request a specific amount or list a range of amounts (“what your donation will buy”). Place envelopes in strategic locations such as pews and bulletin boards, mail them out to members of your organization, and include them in correspondence. It’s an especially good way for groups to collect money for small projects or limited campaigns.
• Website donation button. If you have a website, consider placing a donation button on a page where you explain your fundraising need. Most fundraisers can use PayPal to collect the funds and pay a relatively small transaction fee to collect this money. Read about crowdfunding below, which is another method to collect donations online.

One thing is for certain, asking for money never works if you don’t ask.

Like donation envelopes, containers and buttons, “matching gifts” is free money for the asking. If your existing donors work for a company that has a matching gift program, your organization might be eligible to increase the donation through their employer’s program.

Matching gifts requires some administration. To get this money, you need to do two things: promote matching gifts to your donors and follow the correct procedure for reporting and collecting the matched amounted.

Box tops

Box Tops for Education has transitioned from clipping physical box tops to a digital format using a mobile app. Here’s how it works with the scanning app:

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is collecting money online for a cause or project. This method works best for causes with a compelling story that will inspire donors to open their wallets.

Every crowdfunding platform has rules and fees. So examine them carefully to confirm whether a particular platform applies to your project or goal. Fees range between three and nine percent. So be sure to figure this amount into your fundraising goal.

Popular crowdfunding platforms

Below is an (alphabetical) list of some of the most popular platforms for general and charitable fundraising. We’ve included a very brief description of the types of projects which might use this method successfully.

• Crowdrise. Used for many projects and causes, including charitable events such as marathons or any other charitable fundraiser, community projects such as a skate parks, or personal causes from scholarships to medical needs.
• FundRazr. Used often to fund critical needs such as medical expenses, as well as animal rescues, memorial & funerals, personal needs (education, travel, emergencies), nonprofits, and many other causes.
• GoFundMe. Used often to fund critical needs such as medical expenses, education costs, volunteer programs, youth sports, and funerals or memorials, as well as money for charity.
• Kickstarter. Used for projects that create something to share with others. Projects cannot fundraise for charity, offer financial incentives, or involve anything on their list of prohibited items. Finally, it’s all-or-nothing: meet your fundraising goal or all money is returned to donors.
• StartSomeGood. Used by organizations or individuals to fund social impact projects that create tangible social good in your community or around the globe.

Restaurant gift cards

This deal seems too good to be true. But it’s legit. You purchase restaurant gift cards at a price significantly lower than their retail value, sell them and make $10 profit on each card. For example, you can sell a $50 gift card for $20 and keep $10 from each gift card sold.

This method is gaining in popularity because the cards are easy to get (even in low quantities), sell fast, can be sold and redeemed any time of year, and never expire.

There are also options for paper and electronic gift certificates, as well as other features that your fundraising group may find useful.

‘Ante Up’ fundraising activities

The basic premise of “ante up” fundraising methods is for donors to divert money to the cause through some fun activity. It’s like a penny drive, but bigger and with benefits. The ante can take different forms.

• Give it up ante. Donors will divert money they would have spent on something and donate it to the cause. For example, donors divert money spent on some indulgence they would be willing to give up for a short time to support a worthy goal. Specific examples include giving up lattes at the local coffee stand for a week, giving up dinner out at restaurants or going to the movies for a month, or even going “meatless” on dinners at home one night a week.
• Dare ante. Organizations challenge donors to help achieve a fundraising goal by a specified date or the organization accepts a dare. If the fundraising goal is met, the organization completes the dare. For example, upon reaching the fundraising goal, the board of directors all dye their hair, wear face paint, shave their heads, jump in an icy-cold body of water, or some other fun antic.
• Sports tourney ante. This ante includes walk-a-thons, 5K runs, or any other athletic tournament such as bowling, baseball, or croquet—whatever your community might enjoy. Fundraising is achieved primarily through participant entry fees and/or sponsorships. Individuals and teams can solicit sponsorships, as well as the hosting organization. A dare ante could be added to both the losing and winning teams.

The “give it up ante” is fairly easy and cheap to implement. However, the “dare” and “sport” antes require increasingly more organization and planning. In addition, they may need some upfront funding for supplies.

Fundraising raffles

There are two types of fundraising raffles to consider: a prize raffle and a split pot raffle. For either type, you sell tickets and draw one or more winners.

• Prize raffle: participants win a prize if their ticket is drawn at the end of the raffle. Prizes can be modest or expensive, depending on your resources. For example, a basket of goodies, restaurant gift certificates, a rental car for a week (or a year), an exotic vacation, or a house. To raise the most money for your cause, try to get any prizes donated. Otherwise, the cost of the prize needs to come out of the raffle ticket sales, which decreases the net fundraising amount.
• Split pot raffle: money sells! Sell tickets and simply split the money collected with the winner and your organization. You can have one grand prize and several smaller prizes. This method works well when the grand prize is significantly higher than the ticket price. For example, a $10 ticket buys a chance to win $10,000. If your organization can reasonably sell upwards of 1,000 ten-dollar tickets, this can be a great option. (Don’t forget to include the cost of any other prizes in your ticket sales goal.) Total cash payout should be less than 50% of total ticket sales.

Tips for a successful raffle:

When selling tickets, state clearly whether or not a ticket holder needs to be present to win. If a winner does not need to be present to win, then be sure that donors retain one ticket (to prove they won) and write their name and contact (phone or email) on the back of the ticket submitted to the collection box.

Since the goal of a raffle is to sell as many tickets as possible, it’s a good idea to give discounts for bulk buying. For example, if tickets are priced at $3, then you could sell two tickets for $5, four for $10, and 10 for $20.

The cost of all prizes should not exceed 50 percent of the total amount raised. For those on a budget, strive to get items donated, or consider choosing another fundraising method.

Raffles are most often held at an event or organization with a built-in audience such as a school or church. If you don’t have an event or audience, you might be able to find one by contacting a popular business, such as a restaurant or festival.

Like the prize raffle, try to get any prizes donated rather than take the cost of the prizes from sales. Spin the prize wheel is good for well-attended, lively events such as festivals and potlucks.

‘Pop the Balloons’ variation: if you don’t have a prize wheel handy, the same idea can be implemented using balloons. Simply write the prizes on slips of paper and insert into balloons before blowing them up and tying them off. You can sell the balloons directly, or pin their tail onto a board.

Similar to the “sports tourney” listed above under “Ante Up” fundraising activities, a game night can be a great fundraiser that is fairly easy to implement at low cost. Bingo, card games, and board games make for fun, fun, fundraising events that can become a regularly recurring event that continually nets money for an organization.

If there is not already competition in your area, Bingo can be a good fundraising option. While known as a soft gambling option for “ladies of a certain age”, bingo is experiencing renewed interest in some areas, particularly with populations under 25 and ethnic groups with little or no prior experience with the game.

So consider these facts and your audience. Bingo may be worth a try. To raise money, participants pay for score cards, which you can purchase in wholesale quantities.

As with raffle tickets, plan to give discounts for participants who want to buy multiple playing cards to increase their chance of winning. Cash prizes (up to 50% of the total sales) are best and more likely to draw a larger audience. But you also need other Bingo equipment to call numbers randomly.

Prizes aren’t necessary, people simply play for fun and to donate money to a good cause. So don’t forget to tell a good story when you promote your event.

Finally, if you have a large hall or outdoor space suitable for showing movies to a large audience, consider hosting a movie night. This can be indoors in cold weather or outdoors in summer months and is a great family option. Charge a reasonable fee (less than the going rate for movie houses, perhaps $1-$5 per person), and offer a price break for families.

You can further increase the funds raised by selling refreshments during any of these events. Adult Spelling Bee

Schools are natural locations for the adult spelling bee as a fundraising effort. But it’s also a great idea for any organization in lieu of a game night fundraiser. Find word lists on spelling websites. 

Include specialized terminology based on the organization or sponsors. For example, a church might include biblical words. Or a community group might use terminology related to the history of the area. Use your imagination and make it fun.

For an adult spelling bee at a school, each class might choose one or more parents to represent their grade and compete against parents from the other classes, perhaps with a dare ante attached. Other organizations might allow entrance to any adult who wants to participate and complete against all of the other adults.

Fundraising can “bee” accomplished through ticket sales and concessions or refreshments during the event. But you can also require participants to pay an entry fee directly or through sponsors they solicit (similar to a national school spelling bee).

With entry fees and sponsorships, you can offer the audience the option of pay-what-you-can or a suggested donation.

Car wash or dog wash

Washes are common and easy ways for low budget groups to raise some needed cash. You can charge a flat fee or suggest a donation amount—which means you must accept any amount the customer wishes to pay.

The first requirement is a busy location with a reliable source of water, such as a school yard, church parking lot, or gas station. Second, you need the equipment and supplies, including hoses, buckets, sponges, car or pet-friendly soap, and towels.

For dogs, also have water bowls and a few treats on hand. Finally, you need lots of volunteers to do the work and move customers through quickly. Promote your car wash or dog wash well ahead of the event. Don’t forget a contingency date in the event of rain.

Car detail option: If a car wash isn’t feasible, or you want to increase car wash fundraising by offering an additional service, consider car interior cleaning or detailing. You’ll need a reliable electrical supply to plug in a vacuum cleaner, plus a few supplies (try to get these donated, as the cost can add up): glass cleaner, a spot cleaner for upholstery, vinyl/leather cleaner, and plenty of shop towels. Hang an air freshener on the rearview mirror for a finishing touch.

While car washes are popular, it requires purchase (or donation) of some supplies, as well as access to a suitable location. If you can resolve these issues and have a solid group of volunteers who can also donate some of the needed items, this can be an easy way to reach your fundraising goal.

Sell a product

A well-chosen product can be a very effective fundraising technique, either as an annual fundraiser or one-time event. Below we list a few popular fundraising products.

• Coffee and tea
• Flavored popcorn or beef jerky
• Candy bars or cookie dough
• Concessions at any event
• Flowers
• Bake-at-home pizza

When using methods with prizes, you will make more money by choosing something most people attending your event would find desirable. Let’s discuss when to use your credit card and when to use your debit card! 

I’ll start out by saying that I don’t use debit cards, but I do understand why some people do. They’re linked to your bank account, so in theory, you can’t spend more money than you have in your account. However, after extensive research, I now know why I’ve always avoided debit cards. The biggest advantage of credit cards over debit cards is the consumer protection they provide.

Debit cards are linked to your bank account. If there’s a problem with a charge to your account, you have two business days to notify your bank, and your liability is limited to $50. After two days, you are liable for up to $500, or perhaps much more. The lender can hold your disputed funds for 10 to 20 days while they investigate the problem.

This can be problematic if the funds drained from your account are needed to pay your mortgage, rent, car payment etc. While you wait 10 to 20 days or more to get your funds back, your credit could be ruined.

The situation is vastly different with credit cards. If there is a problem, you have 60 days to notify your bank of a problem, and your liability is limited to $50. After 60 days, you are liable for up to $500.

While the lender conducts its investigation, you may withhold payment of the disputed amount and any related charges. The lender is not allowed to report that underpayment to the credit bureau.

Based on these differences, in what situations should you use a debit card or a credit card?

When to use a debit card

You are in credit card debt

Clearly, being restricted to only spending the money you actually have is the first step to getting out of credit card debt. Just be certain that you don’t have overdraft protection. This will allow you to overspend and then sock you with fees of $35 and more per transaction as overdraft fees can compound.

If you have overdraft protection, contact your bank and opt out. Set up notifications for purchases as alerts for when your balance falls below a certain level.

When the only option to pay is with cash or a debit card

Self-explanatory -right? 

When paying cash is cheaper

I haven’t seen this lately, but some gas stations charge less if you pay cash. Also, in some cities, like Las Vegas, taxis charge a fee for using a credit card.

When paying your taxes

Some states and the federal government allow you to pay with a debit or credit card. The fee for paying your taxes with a credit card is usually a percentage of the taxes due. With a debit card, it is a flat fee regardless of the amount paid.

When you have a separate bank account exclusively for debit card purchases

This account should only contain an amount that you can afford to do without for an extended period of time.

Most reasons to pay for certain purchases with a credit card relate to the better protection they offer in cases of unauthorized transactions or disputes. Credit cards should be used for large purchases, in situations where fraud may be prevalent, and in places where the exact amount of a transaction may not be known when the merchant first requests authorization for a purchase. Credit cards sometimes offer money-saving benefits that debit cards do not.

Where to use a credit card

Restaurants

Your card almost always leaves your sight. This gives unscrupulous employees a chance to skim your card. Also restaurants may put a hold on your debit card over 20 percent over your base bill amount, tying up your money for three days or more. (Skimmers are card reader devices attached to payment terminals that harvest all the data off your card, which criminals use to either clone your card and use it for fraudulent purchases or to empty your bank account). 

Gas stations

Gas stations are notorious for having skimmers attached to their pumps. They also put a hold on your debit card for an amount much greater than your gas charge, and the hold can last for three days or more. Convenience stores and now grocery stores are reporting skimmer incidents

Taxi cabs

Some people have reported multiple charges for a single taxi ride.

Travel

If you are prepaying for a cruise or a tour package and the company goes bust or flying an obscure international airline that ceases operations, you can get a refund through your credit card. Many credit cards also offer an insurance policy when you purchase airfare on their cards. Some offer other benefits such reimbursement for replacement items if your luggage is lost.

Hotels

A couple of months ago, I stayed at a hotel that put a $400 charge on my credit card just for incidental expenses (the hotel room was free using reward nights). My ending charge was $134.40 but the $400 didn’t come off my card until three days after I returned. This amount would have been put on hold with a debit card.

Rental cars

Companies will run a credit check on you when you pay with a debit card. They do this to combat thieves who use debit cards to rent cars and then steal them. This is known as a hard credit pull, and it will negatively impact your credit score.

To avoid foreign transaction fees

Many credit cards do not charge foreign transaction fees, but all debit cards do. Also, if you are overseas and using your debit card and there is a problem, you may spend a significant amount of time and money contacting your bank to straighten it out and be stranded without access to cash.

9. When purchasing from an unfamiliar seller. If you are buying something overseas and have it shipped home and it never arrives or arrives broken your bank will intervene.

For online purchases

If your merchandise doesn’t show up or is damaged, you can dispute the charge with the credit card company.

When buying through PayPal

PayPal has strong protections but people’s debit card accounts have been cleaned out. By linking to your credit card, you have extra bank protection.

Big-ticket items that require a deposit or advance purchase, such as furniture and appliances

Many years ag,o I ordered a dining room set, which was supposed to be delivered in two weeks. After 30 days, I cancelled it, but the merchant wouldn’t remove the charge. My credit card intervened on my behalf and got the deposit returned.

When warranties matter

That is especially true of electronics, car repairs and appliances. Last year when my hard drive went out on my almost two-year-old laptop, my credit card company paid to replace the hard drive. It offered an extra year of warranty over the manufacturer’s warranty.

 For automatic monthly payments, such as subscriptions and memberships

A merchant or service provider may continue to charge your debit card even after the service ends and repeatedly tie up your funds for months.

To earn frequent flyer miles, hotel and credit card points and cash back

Depending on your spending level, you can strategically use credit cards to earn tens of thousands of miles and points annually worth thousands of dollars in free travel. The Durbin Amendment to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act limited the fees that banks can charge merchants when they use a debit card. As a result, almost no debit cards offer any miles, points or cashback benefits anymore. The few that do are inferior to the benefits offered on credit cards.

To build up or improve your credit score

If you’re starting out or got into trouble with spending but now have your financial life under control, debit cards do not improve your credit score. They are the equivalent of checks. To start out, get a credit card with a low limit. If you don’t trust yourself, you can call the bank and ask for a reduced limit. If you want to buy a car or a home someday and you use debit cards exclusively, you will not have a credit score since you have never borrowed any money.

Bonus: Don’t use your debit card at ATMs. They have long been targeted by skimmers and, unlike a traditional ATM card, which has a daily withdrawal limit, a thief can empty your bank account by stealing your debit card info.

If you have a spending issue, limiting your spending to a debit card can be a good tool to keep yourself or your significant other in check. Just be acutely aware of the risks that debit cards pose. With fraud at an all-time high, use a separate account for debit card purchases. Set up notifications through your bank so you receive an email or text for every expenditure over 1 cent and when your balance hits a certain amount (credit card users should do this also). Then, check your bank account daily for fraudulent debit charges and learn the specific requirements for filing a claim with your bank.

If you’ve had trouble with credit cards in the past, you may still want to get a card with a low limit and use it carefully to get benefits such as cash back or miles and points for free travel and to improve your credit score. Getting your spending under control and using a credit card that you pay off every month will eliminate some of the hassles associated with debit cards but can also benefit you financially if appropriately used.

Ask 100 parents about the best cloth diapers, and you’ll get a wild mix of answers—probably 80 different ones! My advice? Don’t drop a ton of money on a full stash right away. Test the waters first. I grabbed a handful of styles and brands before my little guy arrived, figured out what worked for us (and him), and then stocked up on our favorites.

Diaper systems

Understanding all the different options is important! Let’s break down the different types of diaper systems to see what might work best for you and your baby.

Fitted Diapers with a Cover

Think pre-folds, but pre-shaped, and no folding required. They snap or Velcro on like disposables and need a waterproof cover over the top.

Suggested stash: 20-24 fitted diapers, 4-6 covers

Pros: Made from cotton, bamboo, or blends, they’re natural and soak up a lot. If clean, covers can be reused a few times. Elastic leg gussets make leaks rare—great for overnight use.

Cons: Two steps with a wiggly baby? Ugh. They’re wet against the skin, slow to dry, and bulky. If any bit pokes out, clothes get damp. Plus, they’re sized, so you’re buying 2-3 rounds as baby grows—pricey!

My take: I borrowed some Bumkins fitted from my sister-in-law. They were super soft and had no leaks—I loved that. I hated fastening two layers and the bulk. I used them sometimes but wouldn’t ask anyone else to deal with them. Once my son outgrew the smalls, I didn’t buy more.

Inserts with Covers (or All-in-Twos)

Here, absorbent inserts lay in or snap into a cover. You’ve got options like cotton cloth diaper inserts, bamboo cloth diaper inserts, hemp cloth diaper inserts, or microfiber. Covers come later!

Suggested stash: 24 inserts, 8-10 covers (aim for 3 inserts per cover)

Pros: No mess to touch—just dump it in the pail. Reuse the cover if it’s clean. Customize the insert for your baby’s needs. Covers dry fast, inserts can hit the dryer, and it’s cheap cloth diapers territory since you buy fewer covers.

Cons: Inserts can shift or wick if they poke out. Not the best for overnight unless you double up or grab “overnight” ones. Daycares might balk since the whole thing gets swapped each change—check first.

My take: Our go-to! I love reusing covers ‘til laundry day (if they’re not poopy), and they dry in hours. I swap inserts—hemp diaper inserts for heavy wetters, bamboo inserts for cloth diapers for softness—depending on naps or car trips. They’re thin, so clothes fit better, and I stretch laundry to three days (four max—don’t let the stink settle!).

Pocket Diapers

These have a pocket you stuff with inserts (cotton, hemp, whatever). The lining’s usually fleece, suede cloth, or bamboo—some babies don’t vibe with suede, though.

Suggested stash: 18-24 pocket diapers + inserts (grab extras for double-stuffing)

Pros: Stuff them ahead, and they’re grab-and-go like disposables. Super customizable—double-stuff with hemp cloth diaper inserts or whatever for overnight. They dry quick since you separate them for washing. Best pocket diapers like Bum Genius 4.0 are fan faves.

Cons: Unstuffing wet ones? Gross. Some brands claim inserts pop out in the wash, but most need pulling. Stuffing can be a pain—harder than it sounds. The whole thing gets washed every time.

Cons: Air-drying takes forever (two days+), and they’re pricier.

My take: I love the simplicity, but I hate the dry time and cost.

CARFAX

Once you sign up for an account at CarFax, you can run a vehicle history report on the car you are interested in buying. Simply scan the VIN bar code or manually type in the 17-digit number. 

Useful feature: Type in the vehicle license plate for a search to make sure the plate matches the vehicle.

Consumer Reports

Another long-time trusted source, Consumer Reports offers an app that is not a classified section or listing of vehicles available for sale. Instead, it is a guidebook on buying a used car. You can look at car ratings and calculate loan or lease payments. Available for Android and Apple users. 

Useful feature: The Ask the Right Questions category gives you sample questions to ask a seller once you have found a car you like.

Edmunds

This car guru has long been a go-to for car buyers. The Edmunds app lets you search pricing and inventory at dealerships close to home. There’s also a calculator to help you calculate monthly loan or lease payments. 

Useful feature: Get Edmund’s “true market value” to see what a particular model is selling for in your geographic region, and locate a dealer within a specific distance who is offering an incentive deal.  

Instamotor

The Instamotor app helps you take the guesswork out of car shopping by offering a free vehicle history report, showing information like salvage titles, lemon history and weather damage. You’ll also get personalized selections from multiple sellers and full transparency pricing.

Useful feature: Inspection, warranty and a seven-day test drive are included with every car. 

Kelley Blue Book

Use the Kelley Blue Book app to search by manufacturer for new cars, and by year for used ones. It includes reviews by both professional automotive journalists and consumers who own or lease the model.

Useful feature:  You can view videos of cars you’re interested in or of ones that fit within your price range. 

TrueCar

Use the TrueCar app to search for a used or new car and receive a price calculated by what others have paid for the same car. Easy to navigate and more than 12,000 dealers participate. 

Useful feature: TrueCar scans window stickers at dealerships that are including in their database so you can get a fair market price in your area.

iSeeCars

The iSeeCars app allows you to view millions of used cars and trucks for sale by owners and dealers across the country. Narrow down the search by using a number of search filters including price, third row seats and even the amount of headroom in the cab. The cars are also listed according to best price, above and below market prices. 

Useful feature: Email alerts tell you if a saved vehicle price has changed.

Augmented Driving

Do you drive an older car but wish you had some of a new cars’ bells and whistles? For $4, you can try Augmented Driving. Only available for Apple, this app lets you experience a safer drive with real-time object detection using augmented reality. The app can give you an evaluation of your driving, detect vehicles in front of you or in neighboring lanes, or alert you when you have crossed into another lane. 

Useful feature: Take screenshots or video of your drive and save as an MP4 stream.

No matter what mistakes you made last year, you get a do-over this year. The beginning of the year is a great time to make changes that will boost your bottom line going forward. But before you can make a plan to save money, you have to find out where your money’s going. If you use an online budget tool or computer program to track your spending, run some reports and evaluate where your money went. If you don’t have any records, write down every penny you spend for a month.

“It’s hard to figure out where you’re overspending until you know where you’re spending,” says Jean Chatzky, author of “Money Rules: The Simple Path to Lifelong Security.”

Once you’ve got a record, do some analysis. The first question, obviously, is whether your outgoing funds exceeds your income. If you’ve got a mountain of credit card debt, and every month you spend more than you take in, you need make some changes.

Even if your expenses don’t exceed your income, drilling down into your spending may reveal places you can painlessly cut costs to have more money for retirement, a home down payment or an exotic vacation.

Your best spending plan may not be the best for your neighbor. We’ve all heard the cliché about cutting out the morning latte, but that isn’t going to work for everyone, especially those who never buy lattes. “If you value that takeout coffee – if it puts a little joy in your day – I don’t believe that’s what you should cut,” Chatzky says.

For some people, cutting out the morning latte won’t make a dent. They may have to look at more painful cuts, such as moving to cheaper housing or choosing public rather than private schools. “Sometimes the little trims here and there aren’t enough,” Chatzky says.

16 things you’ll regret not doing sooner to cut expenses:

Cook more at home. “We eat so frequently on the go these days,” Chatzky says. “The evidence is gone before you get home.” Anyone who can read can cook, and the Internet is full of websites with easy, healthy recipes. Use up the ingredients that are already hanging out in your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer.

If you are crunched for time in the evenings, use one of the weekend days to cook and freeze several meals for the month ahead. And put a stop on wasting food at home. It costs you the same amount of money to throw food away as it does to cook a nutritious meal.

Save on groceries by shopping store sales and using coupons. It’s true that a lot of coupons are for junk food, but that doesn’t mean you can’t save with coupons, particularly on personal care and cleaning products. Store sales can provide even bigger savings. Many products go on sale every two, three or six months. Watch the sales cycles on products you use, and stock up when prices are lowest. 

Look for happy hours and restaurant deals. For many people, drinks and dinner with friends are a big part of socializing. If you don’t want to give that up but you want to spend less, find restaurants with 2-for-1 drinks and free or cheap appetizers and make those your dinner. Join restaurant email clubs to get coupons you can use to cut the price of restaurant meals. (See the latest restaurant deals and coupons here.)

Call your cable TV and Internet provider and ask for a better deal. As more users abandon cable and more competitors get into the market, companies want to hang on to customers. That means they’re ready to make a deal. You’ll get the best deals from the customer retention department, which is where you call to cancel.

“The last time I did this, I saved close to $50 a month,” says Liz Weston, author of “Deal with Your Debt: Free Yourself from What You Owe.” (Consider ways to cut out cable TV entirely.)

Investigate cheaper cellphone plans. Many carriers are offering new no-contract and pay-as-you-go plans. If you find a plan you like, and your contract is up, ask your existing carrier if it will match the price or give you a better deal. (Look at a comparison of cellphone family plans here.)

Use that cellphone to help you save money. Opt in to getting text and/or email alerts to remind you when a bill is due. There are also lots of great apps for managing all aspects of your budget and bill paying. Saving on those late fees (not to mention the hit your credit score could take) is a great way to get more bang for your smartphone buck.

Cancel your landline phone. Many people find they rarely make calls on their home phone. If you’re not using it, why are you paying for it? Ask about bundling your phone with your cable and Internet service – but be warned that a cable phone will not work in a power failure.

Review your insurance costs. Call your insurance agent and make sure you’re getting all the discounts to which you’re entitled. Make sure your coverage fits your current circumstances. If your teenage driver moved out and got his own car, get him off your policy. You might also want to get quotes from other companies on auto or home insurance.

Call your credit card companies and ask for lower rates. Or do balance transfers. Credit is loosening up and card companies are sending more offers. If you get a good offer, call your existing company and see if it will match the new offer. If your credit is good and you make all your payments on time, you’re in a good position to negotiate. “All they can do is say no,” Harzog says. “Consumers have more power than they know.”

If you are in debt, make a plan to pay it off. Paying $200 a month in interest charges is a waste of money that would be better used toward retirement savings, your kids’ braces or a trip around the world. Some experts advise paying off the smallest balances first, although Harzog recommends targeting those with the highest interest rates.

Either way, start paying off those cards, one at a time. Make the minimum payments on all cards, but target one card at a time and make bigger payments so you can pay it off. When you’ve paid off one card, go to the next.

Look for a cheaper health club. Are you paying $75 a month for a gym membership you never use? Maybe you should cancel and take up walking, biking or hiking. If you’re paying for a gym membership that you’re not using, why not use your smart phone to work out? You can use it as a pedometer with Map My Walk, get inspired to become a runner with a “Couch to 5K” program, or track your fitness goals with MyFitnessPal.

Many of these apps have a social networking aspect, too, so you get motivation from friends and new connections. Perhaps you can get a gym membership that’s equally good for half the price at a YMCA or community center. Shop around. 

Look at the fees associated with your bank and investment accounts. If you don’t have free checking, ask your bank what you can do to get it. If your bank doesn’t offer free checking, find one that does.

If mutual fund fees or stock account fees are eating into your returns, move your accounts to a discount brokerage, especially if you’re not getting personalized advice.

Don’t shop for recreation. If you’re not in the stores, you won’t be tempted to buy. That goes for yard sales and thrift shops, too, Weston says. Ask yourself if you have a real need – or a want. If it is the latter, walk away and find a no-cost way to satisfy the craving.

Do your errands in a loop. Map out your errands ahead of time, and create a circular route to save money on gas.You can keep watch for the best deals on gas with the GasBuddy app, too.

Be careful of online purchases. It’s easy to shop online in the wee hours of the morning, but that spending can add up. Unsubscribe from email alerts that urge you to spend. Get yourself off stores’ online mailing lists and restrict your online shopping to things you really need, when you need them.

Make a budget and stick to it. Give yourself a realistic allowance for discretionary spending and don’t spend any more than that.

The first step in creating a monthly budget is to sit down and figure out how much money is going out (being spent) every month.  We suggest that you gather all of your monthly recurring bills such as medical bills, student loans, utility bills, credit card bills, insurance bills, car payments and so on from last month.  Sit down with all of this information and fill out our free printable monthly budget sheet.  This is your baseline expected expenses.

Step two is recording your actual expenses for the current month.  Use our free printable monthly actual sheet to create this as your bills come in throughout the month.

Step three comes at the end of the current month.  You will use our monthly balance sheet to subtract actuals from your planned budget.  Below is a simple illustration of each step and the sheet you should use.  After this exercise you’ll know exactly how much you have saved!

You may see fluctuations from month to month in your expenses so it’s important to sit down with our free printable budget sheets and complete this exercise every month.  If you do this, you’ll know exactly how much is being spent vs. saved every month.

Monthly Expenses Sheet

Equally important as creating a monthly budget is figuring out how much you’re spending on all those incidentals and discretionary items that pop up and fluctuate from month to month.  These are items like your grocery expenditures, take out meals, babysitting and household items.

The easiest way to do this is to print out our expenses sheet (maybe a few copies if you have a lot of monthly transactions) and take it with you whenever you go shopping.  When you have an expenditure you should absolutely record it in the expense sheet (this is used almost like a checkbook register).  At the end of the month you can total up how much you spent in each area and add it to your monthly budget sheet previously discussed.

Debt Repayment Plan Sheet

If you have goals to pay off a backlog of debt then you’re really going to love our free printable debt repayment sheet!  It helps you establish a plan of action for eliminating mortgage, credit card or student loan debt as an example.

It’s important to know how much money you have left over each month after your expenses to put towards debt.  That’s why completing the monthly budget sheet and expenses sheet previously discussed is so important!  You’ll know exactly how much money you have left over each month to put towards your debt repayment plan.

As a temporary worker, you will not receive employee benefits, and you may have to pass a background check and drug screenings.

Other seasonal jobs can be found at Christmas tree lots, pop-up holiday stores, mall kiosks, flower shops, retail stores and restaurants. Don’t wait to read a classified ad for a position — approach local businesses in person with a résumé and a request for employment. A face-to-face connection makes an impression and will put you ahead of email applicants.

Build your own pop-up business. Are you a whiz at wrapping gifts? Do you shop with lightning speed and have a unique ability to choose the right gift for a person? Consider hiring yourself out as a shopping elf. Determine an hourly wage and a list of services. Create a checklist for your clients, outlining gift-buying budgets, guidelines, descriptions of recipients, payment methods, etc.

Post a notice on your Facebook page to let friends and family know you are offering the service, and place an ad in the local newspaper and on local websites including Craigslist. If you are a DIYer, ask friends if the need any help with home repairs or chores done. If they are not handy or procrastinate when it comes to household chores, offer to clear that “honey-do” list for a fee.

Dirty pieces of silver. We’ve all been there. We rummage under sofa cushions, in little-used jacket pockets, and under car seats. The coins can add up. Take them to Coinstar and turn them into paper. There is a fairly hefty fee for the exchange, 11.9% according to the website. But the service offers full value for your money if you choose to trade your coins for a gift card from participating businesses including Starbuck’s and Home Depot.

If you want the cash, call your bank first. Many banking institutions will no longer accept large quantities of coins from customers, but a few still offer that service for no or low fees. Call ahead and ask for requirements. 

Spin the bottle — and can. Clear your home of your own returnables, and ask your neighbors and coworkers to save their cans and bottles for you. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and grab a garbage bag to collect dollars with the cans you pick up on the edge of the road.

Consign it. Is your basement full of furniture you inherited from Grandma? How about the cellphone you threw into the drawer in favor of a newer, shinier model? Do your closets bulge with clothing that is not quite the right size? Are there unused skis languishing in the garage? Take them to a consignment shop. These places are busy during the holidays, so your stuff could sell fast. The shops keep a percentage of the sale, but it can be worth it.

Don’t dismiss pawn shops; most are clean, well-managed shops. A caveat: When you pawn an item rather than sell it, you are basically getting a loan using the item as collateral. You can come back to retrieve it by paying off the loan plus interest. If you don’t return within a specified amount of time, your item goes up for sale in the store or is sold to another vendor. Return trip. Search your home for those items you bought but did not use. Did you do a DIY repair on your plumbing and buy parts you didn’t need? Take them back to the hardware store for a refund (if you kept the receipt) or a store credit.

Observe return policies: Don’t abuse the process by taking back products you’ve used.

Become a local tour guide. Do you know all the great places to view Christmas lights in your city? Have you mapped out all the independent bookstores? Create a tour that lasts one to two hours and advertise in specialty groups or online. Some cities require you to be licensed as a tour guide, so check your local guidelines. 

Some other tour ideas: snowshoe trails, birding locations, pub crawls, literary walks, or ghost walks.

A rose for the lady? You may need a license, but roadside or special-event sales can be profitable. Consider buying flowers from a wholesaler, or make a deal with a local florist to sell street-side for a profit. Keep your bouquets small and affordable; drivers will be more likely to buy on impulse.

Other possible profit-makers are bottles of cold water or other beverages,candy, baked goods or boxed lunches. Follow the laws in your area, and always pick out a safe place to hawk your wares.

Help out at parties. How many times have you wished you had an extra hand for a party (or the horrible clean-up afterwards)? Rent yourself out to party-makers.

Offer to make runs for extra ice, act as a server or bartender, or handle the kitchen duties. You can also contact catering companies to see if they hire extra help over the holidays.

Watch the kids. Yep, that old high school stand by is a win for adults, as well. Parents need time away form the kids to shop or unwind at parties. Responsible babysitters can make $20 per hour or more, and overnights bring in extra cash. Advertise early for New Years parties.

Sleep on it. There is more cash in that couch than you might think. Consider renting it out through AirBnB or other similar websites.  Complete deals and payments through the site, which charges a fee for the service. You can rent couch space or extra bedrooms for a night or longer. You can choose the days your space is available for rent.

If you don’t mind a roommate, you can offer it for a longer period of time. But make sure you create a legal and binding lease agreement, and take precautions to ensure your own physical and financial safety. Another option: Offer garage space for winter storage of boats, convertibles and other vehicles. In my city, residents are not allowed to park on the street after the end of October, and parking spaces are at a premium. An extra spot in the driveway or garage could bring in a few extra bucks over the winter.

Will you boss me again? Talk to your employer about opportunities to make extra cash. Will he let you put in a few extra hours during the week? Think creatively: Is there another non-exempt part-time job opportunity within the company for which you qualify (or, maybe, over-qualify)? Perhaps you could share hours in a flex-time arrangement with another employee who needs extra cash. This could save your employer the hassle of hiring and training someone new. But he will have to follow federal and state guidelines for employment and overtime hours, as well as breaks and worker’s compensation.

If a second job within the company is not possible, ask your employer for recommendations for temporary part-time work. He may have networked with someone and can put in a good word. If you are an exemplary employee, your boss will be happy to help you through a financial pinch so he can keep you on his regular payroll.

The studio is seeking men and women who are 18 to 40 years old. You can live anywhere in the United States, not just Colorado.

Holiday Inn: Holiday Inn guests can eat at the on-site restaurant, and up to four kids ages 11 and under can eat free from the kids’ menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The meal must consist of at least one main course and one dessert, and children must be accompanied by an adult who is registered as a guest and orders at least one main course from the full-priced menu.

Tony Roma’s: Kids eat free all day long, according to the promo card on this restaurants’ website. Tony Roma’s changes its promos routinely, so always ask about any deal before ordering.

Woody’s BarBQ: Located in Florida and Pennsylvania, this restaurant chains’s locations vary the days of Kids Eat Free Nights, so call ahead for verification. Children under the age of 10 or 12 depending on the location can eat free from the Kids menu with the purchase of an adult entree. One child per adult purchase.

Twofer: The most common offer at the fast-food restaurant is a twofer promo. The offer requires the purchase of two specific menu items at a special price. The value is always really big – usually up to 50% off the regular price. However, you must purchase the two items for the savings. Otherwise, pay full price for just one.

4 For $4 Meal Deal: One of the best Wendy’s values is the ongoing and popular $4 meal deal. For just four bucks, get a sandwich, four nuggets, small fries and value fountain drink. The sandwich options change every so often, but usually include a Jr. Cheeseburger. 

$5 Biggie Bag: Customers can bag big savings with the chain’s on-and-off again $5 Biggie Bag. The savings are usually around 50% off. The sandwich options change every so often, but usually include a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, Double Stack or Crispy Chicken. 

Open the bag and find the featured sandwich, four nuggets, small fries and small fountain drink. It’s similar to the $4 meal deal, but the sandwich is a premium menu item and, therefore, slightly higher in price and includes more ingredients/toppings. 

In some cases, there is a $6 Biggie Bag available with an even more premium sandwich. 

Frosty Key Tag: Every year, usually from mid-November to late January of the following year, Wendy’s sells its popular Frosty Key Tag for $3. The key tag is the entry into lots of sweet savings for the following year.

Flash the key tag at checkout and enjoy a FREE Jr. Frosty with any purchase. The tag pays for itself in just a few visits. And, even cooler, some of the proceeds go to the Dave Thomas Foundation For Adoption.

Free Food: Wendy’s is known for giving away FREE food several times a year, especially as part of the launch of a new or limited-time menu item or special partnership/promo. In the past, they have given away breakfast sandwiches, burgers and nuggets.

The chain launched its first-ever rewards program in the summer of 2020 – Wendy’s Rewards.

Members earn 10 points for every dollar spent, with rewards beginning at just 200 points. Rewards include everything from a small Frosty at 150 points to the big Baconator or full-size salad at 800 points.

To get your points, you must always scan your QR code at checkout before ordering. However, if you forget, Wendy’s has your back. Keep your receipt and submit it here within 24 hours for credit to your account.

The only way to fully benefit from Wendy’s loyalty program is to always get the points, no matter the size of the order. Every point matters. 

Wendy’s App

Of course, Wendy’s has an app and it’s tied to the chain’s loyalty program, especially important for accessing digital offers. It’s the only way to add discounts to your order.

It’s also the best place to track and easily redeem any earned rewards.

However, in addition, customers can also place a mobile order on the Wendy’s app. There is also an option for delivery on the app, but it’s through a third-party service.

Wendy’s Delivery

Wendy’s does not offer any in-house delivery service. You can still have your Baconator, fries and Frosty delivered right to your front door through a third-party delivery service – DoorDash, Grubhub, Postmates and Uber Eats. As a result, expect to pay additional fees for Wendy’s delivery.
