it's so cold

It seems cold to me but then it is winter! Yesterday dawned with a hard frost followed by an overcast sky and rain.....not my ideal day so I stayed close to the fire and worked on my assignment. Geoff dragged me out to help him feed the sheep around 2pm and the sun shone for all of a nano second and gave us this beautiful rainbow. Once that was done I headed back to the welcoming warmth of my fire and computer......

We have woken to another beautiful day with blue skies and mild temperatures. I'm loving it cos it means I am getting so much more done with the autumn clean up than I thought I would. This time last year I was just arriving in the UK and sadly the garden was completely neglected till spring.

When I woke up this morning I had a craving for soup. Soup for breakfast......why not? So I juiced an orange and some celery, added a tomato, half an avo and some broccoli. It was nice and hit the spot but I should have gone out and dug some carrots and got some spinach from the garden........but I wasn't dressed and I wanted the soup like now! It looks a bit bland in the photo but as I say tasted ok.

Weekend in Wellington

We have just returned from a lovely weekend in Wellington with the grandchildren. It was Stella's 7th birthday........

I got the privilege of making the cake this year and her father requested a volcano cake! His birthday is 3 days after her's so maybe it was more for him than her!? Here it is complete with pterodactyl, dinosaur and dry ice eruption.......

I made some crackers today that were a great success. Carrot pulp (as usual) ground sunflower, pumpkin and linseeds. Garlic, semi dried tomatoes, black olives (technically not raw), salt, pepper and water. What I like about making your own crackers is you can make them as soft or crunchy as you want. I like to take some out early when they are still soft enough to roll into a tortilla and fill them full of crunchy stuff. The rest I leave to get crunchy to top with avocados and spreads. I will take a photo for the next post......

I bought a green coconut yesterday and Geoff had to open it for me because it was very hard - I was amazed to get a whole pint of water! There's a lot of jelly too so all in all a good buy for $3.65 I'd say.

I have been busy, busy, busy juicing so I have plenty of pulp for my bread and crackers......these are some I made the other day and boy they were good.

I got this chair from my sister who is moving tomorrow so bagged it when I knew it wasn't going to fit in her new house! I recovered the seat yesterday with what I thought was appropriate material (Andy Warhol style) considering we live and work on a sheep research farm.

My lunch today. I can't get enough soup it seems....juiced carrot, celery and apple - whizzed up with cucumber, tomato and avocado and sprinkled with sprouted lentils. It was so tasty I could easily have eaten 2 bowls!

Henry is staying with us while his mum moves house. We went for a walk today in the woods behind the house and found all these beautiful plants popping up in autumn. A pretty little periwinkle flower braving the colder weather.

Can you believe this is a fungus! It's a mushroom that has morphed out to the side and made this weird shape.

We are home again after a quick trip south to see Geoff's parents in Oamaru. The day we left was unbelievably beautiful and the temperature was about 23. The scenery on the way down couldn't have been more perfect. It was so warm and with no wind at all it made our picnic at the Mayfield domain lovely.

Geoff took Dad to the ANZAC parade on Monday and they both came home excited because Dad had made the front page of the ODT when he was 18 on horseback at the Burnham Military camp just down the road from where we live. We all spent the rest of the day in front of the TV watching the rest of the country and their ANZAC Day parades as it was too cold to go outside to do any gardening. Dad always has a few jobs lined up for when we go down :-)

We headed home yesterday up through Twizel and Lake Tekapo. Geoff did a bit of fishing but didn't get any nibbles. That didn't stop us enjoying the day as it was so nice again and we just got to see the tip of Mt Cook before it disappeared.

I have been sprouting but my quinoa and aduki beans must be too old cos they don't seem to want to get going. The lentils are a great success.

I bought some crackers at the weekend and find that mine are infinitely better. Carrot pulp, ground pumpkin, sunflower and linseeds, onion, tomato, basil, garlic, salt and pepper and water. I will score these for crackers

I wasn't going to make this till later but just talking about it made me want to eat it. So I did just so I could lick the bowl!

I just love this pudding it is so satisfying. It's chocolately, creamy, velvety, and the dates taste like caramel chunks. And it's healthy!

My garden is still giving me lots of flowers and some beautiful looking fejoas. Especially beautiful because I only planted the tree last year so this is it's first crop.

The weather has turned cold a little too soon for me but hey I figure I had two summers in a row so, 'what goes around comes around' as they say.

I'm glad I tucked the broccoli and brassica's up in their winter bedding last week cos the sou'wester is howling through.

The lettuces and spinach are doing well and are well enough along so the cold weather shouldn't affect them.

Fred's been helping Geoff in the office today and sticking very close to the heater......

I have moved the Pohutakawa tree that Sam gave me to under the trees as we are supposed to get a frost tomorrow and I want to give it a good chance of survival. He grew it from a seedling so it is especially 'special'.

Geoff and I went mushrooming yesterday and got lots of lovely field mushrooms bought them home and I cooked them up. I put some with lamb shanks for Geoff's dinner and froze the rest for winter stews. Battled the sou'wester to get more today......they must be ok cos we are both still here to tell the tale..........

I have been away from my blog since leaving the UK and arriving home over a month ago.......but I have been busy. The weather was still so lovely when I arrived that I wanted to throw myself at the garden and dig, plant and enjoy the last of the healing summer sun. All that snow and low temperatures in the UK had left me chilled to the bone..........of course they are now enjoying a lovely spring and have thrown off their jackets and scarfs and put on their shorts and t shirts.....

I don't begrudge them some warmth cos it sure was a cold winter.

So now I am back on an even keel my raw food seems to be back on track......I still eat some cooked vegetables if I'm out or we do a big mess of veg like baked pumpkin, parsnip, zuchini, beetroot, kumara, shallots ......I think you get the picture! Geoff will have meat on the side but loves his vegetables too so it is never an effort to feed him.

For lunch today I juiced some of Geoff's amazing carrots straight fromt the garden, some celery, apple off the tree and squeezed a lemon - added 1/2 an avocado and spinach.......result creamy green soup. I sprinkled sprouted seeds on top and I can tell you it was delicious.

I finally got around to framing Stella's beautiful and vibrant art work......I hope it inspires her to do more.

Saturday tomorrow and we are going to pick some things up from the sisters as she is moving into a smaller place/space in a few weeks. I have bagged myself some really rustic garden furniture and Geoff is buying her nearly new mower..........which is good cos our mower is nearly dead!

Had Henry for the day and he and Fred have been racing about like......well like mad dogs! They are a hoot to watch. Unfortunately I didn't get any photos and they are now both laid out in front of the fire enjoying the warmth and fire glow...........aaaaaaaaaaahhhhh.

And look at that it's already wine o'clock...............

Gosh how time flies.............

Since arriving back I seem to have been here there and everywhere. My final visit to Italy to visit with Kate and Pat and the boys was lovely. Pat was away racing/testing for most of it so Kate and I got to do lots of girly things like shopping and drinking prosecco in the evening and gossiping. We had a lovely visit to Bologna which is such a beautiful town. It boasts the oldest (1088) university in the world!

So we wandered the streets taking in the sights, did a little shopping for Kate at Furla then had lunch at a very nice tratttoria tucked down a narrow side street just off the Piazza Maggiore.

Then back to a very chilly UK to visit Ethan and Lachie.

I helped Merian spring clean the house after the bathroom was renovated and move back in. Then on to three weeks of night duty.

In amongst all this Christchurch has been hit with a terrible earth quake which has caused untold damage. The city I grew up is no longer there and it will take a long time and lots of hard work to get it back up and running. We were fortunate and suffered no damage or injuries but so many haven't been so lucky and the worst of all is the death toll.

Geoff is slowing recovering from his COP but has managed to get shingles so he is feeling a bit miserable.

So as you can imagine I am looking forward to going home. Ten days and counting..........

I'm going over to Henley for my last visit with Tim, Merian and the boys tomorrow before I head home.

I woke at 6.30am feeling brilliant and refreshed after a 10 hour sleep! I definitely look better....no black smudges under my eyes and my skin looks good again - my face was starting to look 'dirty' even after I had cleansed. So clearly sleep is the key.

Bummer have a flat tyre!

Saturday:
I have Ethan, Lachie and Merian staying this weekend. It's been cold so we have been in front of the fire reading books and watching DVD's.

I'm sticking with my raw soups and salads and had my delicious choc pudding last night. I only hope it isn't too hard to keep up when I'm in Italy. I find it difficult when I am staying with friends who are committed meat eaters.......a cooked vegetarian meal is something they have maybe once a fortnight. Italy is like NZ in that it is only seasonal fruit and veg so no out of season strawberries, tomatoes or avocados for the next fortnight.........*sigh* :-(

I had a lovely soak in a bath and a scrub down with my homemade sugar/olive oil/lavender oil mix this evening. I haven't been sleeping since my big flight but last night I slept 10 hours only waking once to go to the loo. So I am trying to do it again tonight and thought a bath and the lavender would help.....I'll let you know in the morning.

Struggling big time!

I am bewildered and annoyed with the struggle going on within me at the moment. I so want to be 100% raw because I feel so well and vital when I am but I am really struggling to maintain even 50-60%. There seem to be so many things pulling me in all directions that I feel like I'm putting all my needs on the back burner.......or so it seems.

I think I want to be in NZ rather than the UK. I feel guilty saying it because that means I can't see the UK grandies or my son and D-in-L. But with Geoff being ill before Xmas I feel that's where I want to be. I so enjoyed the warm weather, gardening and planning the year ahead with Geoff that I question why I'm here.

I've been eating cheese, fish, cooked vegetables and bread and wine.........why am I doing that when the cheese and bread historically makes me really unwell. I get a runny nose/sinus, itchy skin, constipated and my asthma starts to play up. It's a no brainer really........oh and weight gain!

Also I'm not sleeping properly. The jet lag thing is relentless and I wake at 3am every morning. In saying that when I fly I only have a fruit platter and water/juice during the 24+ hour flight so I don't get jet lag.......but it's not working this time.

I believe that we should listen to our bodies and follow it's 'needs' but I have to fight the urge to eat the foods that I know aren't good for me. So I am trying desperately to regain my 'faith' in raw foods and get back in the zone by reading my raw uncook books and revisiting the websites and raw blogs that I find inspirational.

Northern Hemisphere

The northern hemisphere is still in the grip of cold and it is a bit of a shock after my fantabulis 5 weeks of summer in NZ. I just hope it hangs on for when I get back in early March :-)

After arriving last Thursday I have spent my time at Tim and Merian's. It was so, so, so lovely to see Ethan and Lachie. They are so beautiful I cannot keep my eyes or hands off them. Ethan asked me why I kissed him all the time........my reply, 'you are so gorgeous I can't keep my lips off you'!

Tim and Merian have moved over the road for a couple of weeks so their bathroom can be revamped. Tim was given a reprieve and squeezed another two days at home which has been nice for us all. He leaves for 5 weeks in St Moritz today so I am hoping to see Merian, Ethan and Lachie for the weekend.

Geoff is producing brilliant vegetables out of our veg patch at home and I hope he continues to do so till I get home.

Stella, Roan and I had some wonderful feeds of raspberries over the last 5 weeks. We would pick them all and by morning the bushes would be full of little red gems again.

I am back at Tillingbourne now and geting ready to do some work. Before the end of Feb I have to go to Italy to see Kate and Pat and I need to start thinking about my ticket home..........

Here I am on my last day in NZ before heading back to the UK........have I really been here 5 weeks?

It all started with an email literally minutes before I closed down my computer and headed out the door for Heathrow. My D-in-L emailed to say Geoff was back in hospital with the chest infection that wouldn't go away but would hopefully be out by the time I landed. OK that gives him approximately 36 hours to sort it. I didn't manage to check my emails at Changi as the flight was late and we got off one airplane and straight on to the connecting flight.

So when I saw my sisters face and not Geoff's at ChCh airport I knew he was still in there. She drove me to the hospital and it was all down hill from there. Geoff stayed in hospital for another 5 days and came home having been diagnosed with COP. He has been on a hefty course of steroids and we hope on the mend.

Two days after he got home Sam, Tori, Stella and Roan arrived.

And it was all over too soon. The parents went away so Geoff and I had the grandies all to ourselves for a few glorious days. Then the 3 weeks were up and they packed the car and headed back to the city.

I (our family) have had an awful week to say the least.

Ethan was taken to hospital with an asthma attack, Lachie was bitten on his eye by a dog and spent 4 days in hospital on IV antibiotics, Geoff in NZ is back in hospital with a chest infection and Roan is on antibiotics for a chest infection too.

I leave in 2 hours for NZ and although I am looking forward to getting there I'm not looking forward to the 24 hours in the air! I have asked for fruit platters instead of meals so I can at least arrive feeling on top of things and hopefully avoid jet lag.

It's 6 degrees here which is surprisingly warm.....not as warm as NZ though. Geoff tells me it was 29 the other day. I am so looking forward to soaking up some rays. The weather news here is talking more snow this weekend so glad I won't be here!!!!

Sam, Tori, Stella and Roan arrive on Monday and I am so excited about that.......can't wait to get my hands on them!!!

The temperature is -5 this morning and I am wearing tights under my pants, 3 layers of tops and a scarf! I have just come in from feeding the birds and my fingers won't work the computer keys properly they are so cold.......

I have had porridge for breakfast a couple of mornings this week made with rice milk. I love it but need to get back to my greens. I have a red cabbage in the pantry so I am going to make a coleslaw with carrot, onion, corn, cucumber, peppers and apple.

I shouldn't run out of fresh veg if I am careful. It has stopped snowing but as the weather is I don't think I will get out till at least monday.

Well it is very white outside. It is taking us all our time to keep the food up to the birds and squirrels.

Totty a little Scottish Terrier who is staying with me while her family are away in Switzerland loves snow. But in this picture she is thinking about which pheasant she should chase first.

Tim and Merian and the boys are supposed to be coming over on Friday to celebrate Christmas with me before I go home to NZ on the 13th. Alas at this stage they won't make it as I am now snowed in!

Brenda who has to get to Yorkshire has phoned some people (AA?) to pull her out over Broadmoor Hill. Apparently they are going to be here in 4 hours! We will see....

Tired, last day, tired, did I mention that!?

Ok, so last day of being a nanny, nose wiper, cook, housekeeper, drop off at school/driver, laundress, drawer tidier, bather, babysitter and general dogs body. And I might say it hasn't come soon enough!

I will do anything for anybody......just ask. But I DO NOT like being used. Take the piss too often and I simply shutdown and that is where I am at the moment. I no longer offer to do anything extra or stay longer because the so called 'good nature' I never knew I possessed is constantly being asked to stretch a little bit further.

I think people believe if you are in childcare you don't mind doing extra cos it's part of the job. Bollocks! We have a life you know and maybe, just maybe we are having a drink with mates at 7pm. And no we can't stay longer just cos you have spent all day with the phone stuck in your ear and suddenly realise your running late!

Am I ranting? You bet I am. Mothers are so rude sometimes.....I remember doing a maternity nurse job and when I finally put in my bill for 20 days on the trot and charged extra for the days that were supposed to be my days off the mother got really cross. She didn't want to pay time and a half. You should have thought of that when you swanned out the door love leaving me holding the baby.....literally!

So now I have that off my chest .........I have my grandies form Henley for the weekend. What could be nicer? A couple of Aussie mates too so hope there isn't any cricket on...;-)

And next week some serious sleeping - only waking when I am ready with no alarm set. Getting my sister from NZ from Heathrow on Wednesday for a week of shopping before shipping her off to Yorkshire for Xmas and the Rellies.

The Last Post (not really).

I had a lovely weekend with friends in London and also a visit to my hairdresser of 8 years. London was as frantic as I remember and catching trains and tubes is awful - everybody pushing and rushing to get somewhere.

It was lovely to see my hairdresser Fabio. I hadn't had my hair cut since March so I was long over due for his 'sissor hands' to work their magic.

Kirsty and Simon were their usual generous selves and we had a couple of wonderful bottles of Lafitte champagne from his well stocked cellar. Simon has invested in wine for the last 20 years so I was honoured that he should crack a couple of these beauties for my visit. Kirsty is the producer of The Great British Menu so we had lots to talk about. We had roast chicken and veg for supper - I had the veg minus the chick rather than make a fuss and very nice it was too. It was lovely to see their girls, Celeste and Valentine who I looked after as babies.

On Sunday we went to the Armistice Day celebrations at Putney Bridge and the Last Post had me in tears as it does every year. Some of the veterans were openly crying and it was heart breaking to see their sadness - of course nothing compared to what they must be feeling.

Geoff's father who turned 90 in August is one of the last of his regiment left now and I was so pleased when Geoff went with him to this years centenary. What would the world be like and would we be free if it hadn't been for all those men and women.

I finished shopping for the few Christmas presents I needed and headed for the Surrey Hills as soon as I could. Came home and lit the fire and once I was unpacked I did a few jobs and settled in front of the TV for X Factor and I'm a Celebrity Get Me out of Here.

I listen to a lot of radio especially BBC Radio 7 when I am in bed. Last night I listened to War Horse written by Michael Morpurgo. Joey, a beautiful red bay horse tells the story of his time in France and the horrors he saw and experienced during WW2. It was on in memory of Armistice Day and it was a wonderful story. A fitting end to a thought provoking day...............

100% raw or 'high' raw?

The other day I read an interesting article about 'are you 100% or 'high' raw?' It helped me put into perspective being 100% or 'high' on the raw scale-ometer in my head. It showed that I am clearly 'high' and not 100% - here's why.

I made a salad during the week and used raw carrot, spinach, tomato and celery then added artichokes in oil from a jar and cooked pea's. I adore artichokes

and personally I think this is the only way to eat them - they are delicious beyond description. I don't like them fresh as there seems to be no point in the little bit of flesh at the end of a hoary/prickly leaf. Instead I like them already prepared for me in oil in a jar. There aren't any fresh pea's here now winter is upon us so I thawed some frozen ones and heated them through - they also were extremely delicious.

Purist would probably go without both these wonderful vegetables but I feel that they added to my salad and made it even more delicious. So the conclusion I came to is......some weeks I'm 100% other weeks I'm high.

Hah! High...that could mean all sorts of things.

Lying in bed.........

I'm lying in bed doing my blog today.......

I had a somewhat restless night and woke at 3.20am and didn't go back to sleep till about 7am. I knew it was 7 cos it was getting light and I had to put on my eye mask and pretend it was the middle of the night. So why was I going back to sleep at 7 you ask? I don't need to be at work till 1pm today....yippee!

You could say I am still indulging myself and extending my weekend detox. To be honest I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have. I went shopping on the Saturday and with all the crowds and detox I had this horrendous headache by lunchtime. So 'big mistake' and a 'lesson learnt'. If you're detoxing stay home and be quiet.

I did do some colonic's, skin brushing, moisturising, juicing and reading but never felt completely in the 'zone' which was disappointing. So I will have to wait now and try again after my sister's visit and before I head back to NZ for Christmas.

I have a 4 - 5 day window where I can prepare myself for the long haul flight and fast cos I don't eat the airline food. Not even when they tell me it is vegetarian! A limp lettuce leaf, 2 cherry tomatoes, some cucumber slices, dubious dressing, a yoghurt (?) a hard as a rock bread bun and some cut up unripe melon. Mmmmmmmmm yummy - not!

So I would rather water fast between Heathrow and Changi and get a juice or smoothie at the airport. They are amazing and make them in front of you. Last time I went through I went to the sushi bar and had vegetable filled tofu pockets - not technically raw but oh so good. You can ask them to fill them with whatever you want. I checked first to make sure there weren't any nuts or nut oils that were going to set me off then sat down with a large glass of Pinot Grigio and indulged myself. I am so going to do it again this time......
