My curiosity about "all things RSS" has evolved to the point where I am ready to launch a new version of the web site.

TodayinAustin2011 is a new test-version of the site. It will continue to deliver high quality content about today's events in Austin. However, I am crafting the new site in a way that will save me lots of time. Instead of reading the hundreds of secondary sources that contribute little, I have focused on including only the best and consistent information sources about Austin's fun events. I will let my automated programs "read" more of the content to determine which events are suitable for the day. The largest category of wonderful event news will be in "Planning Ahead" - but I will not be sorting it by dates and categories any longer.

I'll still be sitting behind the screen here, turning the dials. So if you'd like to be in touch with suggestions, please feel free to email me at atxpress "at" gmail "dot" com.

A last note: this particular feed with "Today's Events" will feature exclusively Today's Events at the University of Texas. If you'd like to receive all of the other events that I've found for Austin, please subscribe to Planning Ahead. If you pop that into Google Reader, you will be happy with the results, I believe.

If you love email, here is the link to receive "Planning Ahead" via email:
Subscribe to TodayinAustin's "Planning Ahead" - Delivered as one daily email.

Upcoming: Art Gallery Shows (listed in order of closing date)

Dec 4, 11 -- Co-Lab: Kale Roberts: Fabrication and Value – 7-11pm
http://www.colabspace.org/

Dec 5 -- Arthouse: Cyprien Gaillard. As many of the comments indicated in response to my blog post in March, it’s not very customer-oriented to institute a limit but not also provide better amenities like secure bike parking. So, the goal of this group will be to set priorities, budget and timeline for upgrades to improve bicycle access to both MetroBus and MetroRail.

To read the whole article and more customer comments, see: http://capmetroblog.com/2010/04/28/the-bike-policy/

Word on the street: MetroRail's Stranded Passengers

Apparently Cap Metro has some kinks in the customer service plan regarding bicycle commuters on the new MetroRail service.

If you are new to MetroRail, here is the description of the new train service from the Cap Metro web site:

MetroRail offers service weekday mornings between the hours of 5:25 and 9:25 a.m. and weekday afternoons between 3:45 and 7:42 p.m. The approximate travel time between Leander and Downtown Austin is one hour.

The schedule options allow riders to arrive and depart downtown Austin at these times:
Arrive Downtown (M-F) 6:27, 7:02, 7:37, 8:12, 8:35, 8:56 am
Depart Downtown (M-F) 3:45, 4:20, 4:55, 5:30, 6:05, 6:40 pm

Cap Metro has been taken by surprise by the number of bicyclists who are riding to and from the train stations and hoping to ride the train. Cyclists have commented on (1) too few bikes permitted on board, (2) lack of secure bike racks at station(s), and (3) infrequent service resulting in customers being stranded at the station. Cap Metro suggests that there are some work-arounds, like finding the nearest bus stop and hoping that when the bus arrives it will have an available slot on its bike rack.

What models do we have for mass transit that is pedestrian and bike friendly? These folks in Boston are a wonderful example of advocacy for pedestrian and bike friendly development: http://livablestreets.info/mission. And this comment on the Cap Metro blog is enlightening:

Couldn’t the wisdom of other cities be considered? Santa Clara has a great system and you can put 4 bikes in their hangers and 2 bikes can stand for a total of 6. They also have a Bike Ways Map. Apparently some genius overlaid the streets, the train tracks and stations and the bike paths and safe streets together and developed a map. The schedule is very frequent also; http://www.vta.org/schedules/SC_901NO_WK.html

Here's my feedback: A customer service problem results from customer's expectations. If you expect to be able to roll your bike onto the train, you plan your day accordingly. I suggest a reservation system that will allow a rider to reserve a bike slot. Or Cap Metro could install a real-time monitoring and announcement system to report how many bikes are currently on the train. It will be interesting to see if Cap Metro can solve this problem.

If you would like to read the thread of customer feedback regarding stranded bicyclists attempting to ride the train, here's the link:
http://capmetroblog.com/2010/03/26/bikes-bikes-and-more-bikes/

4/23 blog post addition: More criticism surfaces today with article "CapMetro blasted in state report" from the Austin Business Journal.

Take a virtual tour of the new MetroRail

Last year, Cap Metro hosted an open house at Saltillo Plaza in East Austin. To call the box office, try: (512) 472-5470.

I went ahead and created a list of all of the movies eligible for this pre-purchase: http://my.sxsw.com/user/schedule/dprechter

If you end up unable to use the ticket because the film becomes "sold out"
