Tutorial: Personalized Belt Buckle

Before being eliminated on PR&P earlier this year, I had already started on a concept for the Boy week. My look was going to be called Preppy Punk :)

I never got around to showing any of you the few things I did have made, so here’s one! I love it and my punks think it’s pretty cool they have a buckle with their name on it ;).

Here’s how you make one:

Fabrics in your choice
Mod Podge
Buckle Blank (source)
Wonder under (2 sided fusible web)
Glossy Accents

Find a print out a font that you like and that fits in your buckle blank nicely. I used Ambulance Shotgun font from Picnik

grab a piece of paper and make an indent of the buckle blank as a pattern

cut out the ‘pattern’ and use it to cut out a piece of fabric for the background of the buckle. Set aside for now.

Take your letter fabric and apply a piece of Wonder Under to the wrong side of your fabric following the directions

Hang your word on a sunny window and tape the fabric up. Outline the letters in reverse!

Carefully cut out your letters

Peel off the back of the wonder under from each letter

Place the letters on the background fabric and press with an iron to set

Apply a generous amount of mod podge to the inside of the buckle blank

Place the graphic onto your buckle blank and press down to adhere. Allow to dry a bit.

Using your glossy accents and using a steady hand, squeeze the material onto the buckle

until it is completely full. Make sure that when squeezing the material that you don’t allow air to get into the bottle. This will create bubbles which are a pain in the arse to get out. Steady and slow! Store away in a place where punk paws can see or touch and allow to dry for 18-24 hours.

Throw on a belt!

What’s so Pinteresting? {a discovery tutorial}

Have you heard of Pinterest? Have you joined yet? I’ve heard many people say, “Oh…that’s just another time sucker”. But for me, it has been the ultimate motivator! There is so much to see and learn and DO! Any topic you can think of (well, maybe not EVERY topic ;) is there for you to explore. It's like your own personal website of stuff you like, from home decor ideas to inspiration on what to cook for dinner.

This is a screen cap of my Homepage. This is where all the people I follow have pinned (bookmarked) something from a specific site. When the pin is made, you get to pick a picture from the post to help you visually remember what it is! GENIUS!

It’s so fun to follow different people and get inspiration. If you see something they have pinned that you want to keep for your own, you just…

Repin it to one of your own boards. Your boards are basically specific categories that your pins may fall under. I’m pinning to my PARTYS board above. That’s where I store all my ideas for future parties.

Ahhh… eye candy! I seriously am motivated to bake all the time! I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing nowadays, but my kids sure are appreciating Pinterest because of all the yummy treats that bake in the oven!

This helps you see it up close and even bigger. The link to the post is in the upper right hand corner (just to the left of the Facebook like button). You click on the link and it takes you straight to the post where the recipe is.

I made these cookie bars this week and packed ‘em up in the boys’ lunch so as to get them out of the house ;).

There are so many ways to explore too:

My new favorite thing to do is to click POPULAR at the top (just below the Pinterest logo) and see what is popular right then. It changes every time you click popular, so there is plenty to go around. I have to say I have run across some great stuff this way!

I’ve seen a lot of bloggers get noticed this way too! This Learn How to Knit post was on the Popular page and this particular pin had 902 repins! That’s a lot of traffic heading to your blog! As a matter-a-fact, my blog’s No. 1 traffic producer is Pinterest…and has been for several months. Yippee :)

That brings me to another tool…you can see who has pinned what from your blog by clicking on a pin from your site. I will usually pin my own tutorial once it goes live on my blog, so we’ll start there:

You’ll see in the left column, below my Board stats, a row of three pictures and right above it it says ‘Also from livingwithpunks.com’. If you click on that, it will take you to all the pins that have come directly from your blog! Sweet!

It’s fun to see what people like and see the comments they leave in the description. As you can see, the pin I just took from my site is now first in the line up in the left hand corner….and someone has already repinned it in those 20 seconds it took me to screen cap! Do you see how this is going? More and more people discovering your site… and you discovering more for you to do!

Which brings me to my latest obsession:

QUILTS! And I’m actually making some of these as we speak! I don’t think I would’ve ever been this motivated to QUILT without Pinterest :)

Another awesomely awesome tool is the SEARCH tool. I seriously search it like Google sometimes! Here I searched for Balloons and got this:

I hope this helps those of you who are newbies or have heard about Pinterest but wasn’t sure. I’m gonna go bold here and say I think Pinterest is the next Facebook!

DIY: Button Inital

I used a monochromatic theme with this initial using buttons and filling in the gaps with faux pearls. I love the texture it adds to the letter up on the wall!

I whipped up this hoodie for my little punk and she adores it…can you tell? She is usually under protest to take pictures, but she actually asked if we could do a photoshoot this time! I didn’t skip that opportunity, loaded her up and went to our nearest pecan orchard to have some fun.

I’ve made this pattern before for my boys and it is fantastic. It is really easy to put together, even the zipper is a snap because you to get to separate it to install it! The fabric I used is a dramatic monarch butterfly print. I can’t find the scraps from the project (in the middle of sewing room remodel), but I did get it at a quilt shoppe, so I know it’s from a designer. Anyone have the info on it? I love it! It’s kinda abstract with awesomely vivid color.

For the interior I used a buttery soft gunmetal sweatshirt fleece. It is cozy and irresistibly soft. It will definitely keep this little punk warm on chilly days. I love the purple cuffs and waistband. It lends a playful touch to the bold print.

Definitely punk approved!

DIY: Sequin Initial

I’m on an initial kick…actually I’m creating my daughter’s name for her room! I’m using a different size and shape for each letter…some will be wood, some will be cardboard. But all will be covered in some fantastic way!

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to post one letter every week, so yay for that!

Today’s letter is sooo quick, it’s only gonna take you 5 minutes, tops!

In case you hadn't heard yet, I was the first to go from Project Run and Play :(

I certainly was not expecting that! But, someone had to go right? And if you check out all the designs that were submitted, I can see why! The winning design was certainly a design masterpiece. The work she put into it was gorgeous! Congratulations Danielle :)

Although I'm sad to be gone, I have to say there is a sense of relief. I feel like I can get back to my home and family. I haven't cooked a decent meal in a few weeks and I still have Christmas decorations up, man!

Thanks from the bottom of my heart for all your support. I had already started on the Boy Theme, so be looking for a few tutorials in the next week...

Hi-ya! I’m so excited to finally get this party started!

This week’s theme is a remix of the Junebug Dress by Craftiness is not Optional! Fun!

I fell in love with this lining fabric for the dress and you’ll find it peppered through out the remix design

The quilted front panel was inspired by the patterned fabric

I thought about adding a belt, and actually made one... but it felt too busy and took away from the design

Her Sanita Clogs go perfect, yah?

I utilized the lining fabric and covered the buttons in a way to showcase the diamond design on the quilted front.

I love how her little elbow peeks through the scalloped edges

For little punk’s room I knew I wanted a silhouette of her profile (‘cause it’s so cute!). But, I didn’t want to use black in her room…to harsh with all the pink and yellow :)

So, I came up with a ‘Quilted Silhouette’

…While packing up Christmas…

Thought I’d share my shoe ornament collection with you! Aren’t they fab? My mom and I started collecting them from The Metropolitan Museum of Art several years ago. Every year they have 6 or 7 new shoes available. I hate it when I miss a year and forego all the goodness. The shoes come individually boxed with a distinct description of its inspiration. Some of them are replicas of royalty or celebrity shoes!

Do you have a ton of these red berry trees/garland/picks like I do? They are so festive, but over the years of being unpacked and re-packed, the berries can get nicked and banged up, exposing the white Styrofoam and sticking out like a sore thumb!

It bugs me to no end! But, as I was on the verge of making an emotional decision (chuck them out), the idea of adding red nail polish popped into my head! Bam!

Voila! So, don’t chuck ‘em like me! Fix ‘em and get more use next year :)

Now, I know I’ve said before that I’m a procrastinator… I love to think up ways to put off important things! Well, welcome to the mother of all excuses to procrastinate for Project Run and Play! YES! A few days ago, we decided to rip out the carpet in our office, which doubles as my sewing room, and lay hardwood! Actually it was my Christmas present from the hubs, so it wasn’t a total devised procrastination, but…it works!

It’s especially helpful when I go to look for my scissors…or an empty bobbin... and can’t find it, and then get the satisfaction of putting it off. Procrastination Heaven!

The flooring guy got it all finished up today though, so tomorrow it’s back to business! Although… it would seem that a few days of organization could be in order, yah? ;)

Made: Kaleidoscope Quilt

Another project for little punks room is done! I can’ t tell you how much I love this quilt... I actually took the time with this one to plan the fabrics and where they would be positioned. I love scrappy quilts, but my organized mind also thrives on uniformity and direction. As you can see in the quilt, I arranged the kaleidoscopes so they would fall in a diagonal line by color. I love that!

Also, for each kaleidoscope, I used the fabric opposite each other. Each large triangle has a corresponding small triangle right across from it.   Ahhh, it pleases my eye!

For the backing, I choose a super soft flannel check and the binding matches the EURO SHAMS I made a little earlier.

I used THIS tutorial from Don’t call me Betsy. It’s actually an awesome step-by-step quilt-a-long!

As I was making the top, I started to see all types of shapes in the quilt that I had never seen before!   Large circles… and see how the white is also making a star!

X’s are also prevalent… You can actually use the fabrics in a certain color scheme that will make these x’s stand out more like this one HERE.

And of course, the kaleidoscope shape. This is what I chose to emphasize with my design and fabric choices.   Check out the flickr pool of all the quilts made using this tutorial…there is some awesomeness in there!

I get all my quilts quilted by The Backporch Quilters. They do an awesome job and are very easy to work with. You just ship them the top, batting and backing and they send it back to you all quilted! You can even send them the binding material and they will bind it for you too!

It’s now laying at the foot of little punk’s bed…ready for some use!

Eat. Salted Caramel Sauce

This past weekend was our annual Cousin’s Luncheon on my husband’s side. Basically, it’s a group of ladies that get together and catch up on the going’s-on in our lives and have tons of laughs…

This year was my turn to host and I knew instantly what my table gift was going to be for each person attending…

The best thing in the world: Caramel Sauce…with salt!

I used THIS recipe. It really is the simplest thing you can make… and people will think you fussed over it. Great right! Lots of fame with little effort ;)

It really is funny when you read the recipe…she states not to stir the sugar and water as it is cooking….for 30 minutes! I didn’t realize how hard that would be. I was standing over the pot, watching it boil away and it literally felt like a cartoon scene where the devil guy is sitting on one shoulder saying,

“How is this gonna turn out right unless you stir it?”

While little miss angel is on the other side saying “But the recipe said not to be tempted to stir!”

Devil: “A few little stirs isn’t gonna hurt anything”

Angel: “Ahahahhh…She put in the instructions TWICE not to stir”

Devil: “Puhleeze, what does she know?”

Well, I’m happy to say the little angel won. I didn't stir, not once. Not even a little bit!

I doubled the recipe and was able to fill 4 8oz. jars for each batch. Topped them off with a lace topper and handmade gift tags.

We dipped pretzels and our fingers in the leftovers…yum!

These will definitely make great neighbor and teacher gifts for the holidays…if you can get the lids on fast enough!

Tutorial: Ruffled Euro Shams

In my quest to perfect my daughter’s room, I knew we had to have some ruffle. Girls+Ruffle =Fun!

I love euro pillows on the bed. I think they make a great backdrop for the overabundance of pillows that are usually on any one of our beds in this house. I love the scale they bring to a bedroom and they are a perfect landscape for some pretty awesome prints to tie everything together.

I’m loving all the colors that we are ending up with too. I can not WAIT to show you the entire room. Just need to tie up a few loose ends first.

These shams are pretty basic and easy to whip up. The ruffle border is a ton easier if you have a ruffle foot. I bought one when I purchased a new machine a few months ago and oh. my. gosh.! What a miracle worker this thing is. I definitely recommend one if you are a sewer and have girlies. I believe any machine you have while have an optional ruffle foot. Try googling ruffle foot for____ (enter make and model of your machine). They are an investment, but let’s face it… how much ruffling is there to do out there???? A LOT!

If you’d like to make some ruffle shams, follow along:

MATERIALS

2-2.5 yards of 42” fabric. I give a variance there because if you have a directional print, it may take more fabric

Cut your pieces. To achieve the looooong 7” piece, which will be for the ruffle, you can use THIS TUTORIAL on how to sew the pieces end-to-end in the correct way.

Excuse these dark pictures too. Curse you , Daylight Savings Time!

Take your long 7’ piece and iron it in half, so now you have a loooong 3.5” piece!

There she is. The ruffler. Quite a contraption isn’t it. Another great thing about it is the ability to control the “ruffliness” of the fabric. You can make it super ruffly, or just a slight ruffle. It is all controlled by the gear.
If you are not using a ruffle foot for this part, you can ruffle the common way, no problem. I suggest you stitch in 12-16” increment to make it not so hard on yourself though.

Once your ruffled piece is ready, pin it to the right side of the 27” square.

When you get to the end, it will look like this…unfinished edges.

Just turn in the sides about a 1/2” and press. Pin down and get ready to sew.

Sew around the entire square using a 1/2” seam allowance

Now, take your 27x14” and your 27x17” pieces and on one 27” side, iron over 1/2”

Fold over another 1/2” to close up the raw edge

Edge stitch the hem closed. I like using my presser foot as a guide to keep my stitch straight

Place those 2 ready pieces right side down right on top of the ruffled piece. The two finished edges that we just did will be overlapping each other a bit on the back. That’s what we want. Right sides are facing. Pin in place.

Flip your sham over so you can see the stitching you already made when you sewed the ruffle in place and stitch right over the same stitches.

Clip all four corners and turn the pillow sham right side out

Fill it up! Euro shams are typically 26”x26” and that is what this pillow sham tutorial is for. Please check your pillow form size before you start sewing

Oh, in case you are wondering the fabric I used on these are from Jennifer Paganelli’s line called Honey Child. Love! If I didn’t have a smidge of self control, I might have wallpapered the entire room in it!

DIY: Candy Cane Wreath

A couple of things today :)
First:
I’ve made a few improvements to the Navigation Bar and how all the tutorials are arranged.

I have drop down menus! Yay! Each tutorial ‘theme’ has it’s own page. You can always get to ALL the tutorials if you’d rather, but thought the individualized categories would be nice!

I used this tutorial and it was pretty simple…just time consuming to get them all arranged. Whew!

Peruse around and let me know if you see any glitches…

Second:

I’ll leave you with a few pictures of my daughter’s new comfy cozy robe I sewed up for her this weekend…

She loves it and got so excited when she put it on for the first time. She said, “Mommy, you made that?” Love it when they get excited!
