Pattern Review: Emmaline Dress by VFT

I was so excited to get this pattern! When Violette Field Threads teased us with the pattern several weeks ago on Facebook, I about died!!! I love maxi dresses, but let’s face it: They don’t always look the greatest on adults…so I got my fix by making little punk one!

I knew I wanted to make it with knit and ran out and bought this pink and orange tribal ikat. It’s a soft, weighty knit that has deep, gorgeous color hues. If you end up making this dress in a knit, I would suggest omitting the ruffle piece on the neckline. That was a lot! of knit to sew through and weighted it down a bit.

She said she feels like a princess in it. :) She had a lot of fun twirling and spinning in her new favorite dress! Bonus: She actually cooperated with me taking pictures…that say’s a lot!

TUTORIAL: Sugarplum Capris Free Pattern

Who doesn’t love ruffles?…they just make things happier. When I wear ruffles myself, I think I probably have a little bit more bounce in my step… they just do that. Add more bounce!

Everywhere we go someone comments on her ruffle capris. I usually avoid the whole “I made it “ conversation if I can, but recently, I was just too proud of these fun pants to pass it up :) I still don’t know if the woman who asked about them got it… that I actually made them. She said, “Oh, you added the ruffles to leggings?”
I think that is my main fascination with making clothes…that they are unlike anything else you can buy….and you can make them in whatever cool fabric you can get your hands on!

And these definitely don’t have that ‘handmade’ look to them anyhow!

They are of course, loaded with ruffles on the bottom and adorned with a comfy yoga style waistband… or, she can wear them high-waisted too!

My obsession with making them turned out several different types of knit. They all worked really well, but I think my favorite fit is with the blue jersey. It’s a thinner material and buttery soft, perfect for a running and bouncing. The white ponte roma is not as stretchy but is a luxurious knit and I’m reserving those for special occasions. The sprinkle interlock capris probably have the most stretch and will be perfect for running on the beach or even just lounging around the house. Hope that info helps you when picking out knits for this pattern!

Let’s make your sugarplum a pair too:

**This template is for a size 3/4 toddler, but you can always adjust up/down where needed**

3/4 yard of 60” knit
Sugarplum Capri template (4 pieces), taped together and cut *front and back pictured above*
1/4” seam allowance

Cut the pieces pictured above. Make sure you keep your main pieces (front, back and waistband) with the grain

Sew a front and back together at the sides, RST using a 1/4” seam

Transfer the ruffle line markings to the front of each capri panel

Ruffle all the 2”x22” strips at the top using a 1/4” stitch line

Add the first ruffle to the bottom ruffle line and pin in place. Stitch the ruffles to the capri using the gathering stitch that was used for the ruffles

Add the second ruffle and stitch in place

Add the third row! Now sew the other capri panel in the same manner

Place the two panels RST and pin and sew as pictured above

Now they look more like capris! Using the diagram above, stitch the inside legs.

Take you 18”x9” piece and sew it down the short side RST

Turn it right side out and wrong sides together to form a high-waist waistband

Pin the waistband to the capri top raw edge. If there are any gaps , just stretch as you sew.

Wear them high-waisted…

Or turn the waistband down for a yoga pant style.

The sherbet colors I chose for the four tiered ruffles pair nicely with the playful neighborhood sketch fabric. It’s so fun for Summer!

I know I’ve said in the past that I was over paper patterns, sick of ‘em…but I was mainly referring to commercial patterns, like the Big 3. I can’t remember if it was the wrangling of tissue patterns or the sketchy illustrations that turned me against them, but I definitely had my nose turned up ;)

Until recently I fell in love again…
I attribute my new love affair with well-designed paper patterns, like this one by Violette Field Threads, the Vivienne.

Isn’t it nice and neat? Not mounds of tissue that takes a math degree to fold back together and plenty of contributions to the swear jar ;) One, easily-foldable, piece of paper that isn’t the size of your front door. Just trace the size you need and put back in the booklet.

Another pro to have your pattern in paper form is that you can have it right in front of you. Sometimes I can’t get on my computer right away to look at a digital pattern because little punk is doing important stuff on there. ABCMouse.com, anyone?

Violette Field Threads offers 3 of their beautiful patterns in paper right now. They sent me all three to try (Thanks ladies!). I chose the Vivienne for now…isn’t it the sweetest thing? I made the Molly Jacket and I can’t wait to tackle the Stella.

Instead of adding buttons, I used one of the decorative stitch patterns on my machine! I love the look and foresee a lot more decorative stitches in my future…I especially love it against the denim. The fabric I chose for the underskirt was a purchase from Joann’s about a year ago. I love it and I think it’s right on trend with all the tribal and Aztec prints out there right now.

DIY: Jute Bottles

I’m a jute lover….I have it all over my house. I love the comfortable and tropical spa look in my décor, so it fits!

Perfect for stems from the garden. Roses, hydrangeas, lilies all work great! I love the rough texture of the jute contrasting with the delicate petals of the flowers.

They’re super easy to make and are great hostess gifts when the neighbors invite you over for a weekend barbeque…

Do you find a pattern first, and then buy the fabric? Or do you find the fabric first and then hunt down the perfect pattern? I’d have to say that I’m the buy the pattern and go and find the perfect fabric kinda girl. The kind that hops in the car the instant I see a pattern and goes on a search…and can’t rest until I find it…which usually isn’t too long ;)

I had been dying to make this Sunki dress from Figgy’s. It is so fresh and modern and I especially loved that the pocket inserts allowed for so much design. I really like the dress on the cover of the pattern using all one fabric, but thought it would be fun to change up the pocket panels. So, as soon as I spied the pattern, I grabbed little punk and we went on a ride across town to find the perfect fabric…
I ran into this madras plaid at Hancock’s and fell in love. Rarely do you find a plaid girly enough for cuteness, but this one had just the right amount of feminine colors that we just had to buy it. Little punk is really into pink right now (ya’ think?), so as long as it has a hint of pink, she’s ecstatic. The black/white gingham was a no-brainer complimentary fabric to add just enough contrast to the panels, yet stay completely true to the madras feel of the outfit.

The pattern has so many tailored features, something I love now that I have become more experienced in sewing. Sometimes, I need a challenge to keep me interested ;) The overlapped bodice at the shoulders is a smart addition and the puckered sleeves is a darling alternative to the common gathered sleeve….it’s just nice to look at!

As you can see, the dress is easy to move and play in. Definitely a versatile dress that can be used for play or transitioned into a Sunday dress when needed.

Alterations?: Sleeve length variations are included. I made 3/4.
Will you use this pattern again?: Yes!. Already have the fabric chosen (surprise!). This one will be made with only one fabric…will show the results once I get it made
What do you love most about it?: The pockets. They truly are a special part of this dress. Not only are they functional, but the design possibilities get me excited :)

Floor Cushion Redux

Have you made the floor cushion yet? I’ve made it for every 1-year-old I know…as long as they invite me to their birthday party ;) It’s the perfect cozy companion for encouraging book reading for kids of all sizes! As a matter-a-fact, Sherry from Young House Love recently made it for her soon-to-be 2 year old baby girl! How awesome is that?

The built-in handle is perfect for toting your portable seat from room to room. The easy, piped edges are the perfect accent to make the cushion pop. For this particular cushion (made for my wee little nephew’s 1st birthday next weekend) I used a home dec fabric that I picked up from Joann’s that is super fun and bright. Just the ticket for a budding rough and tumble beast like this one.

I added one of my Punkware labels that I had made up about a year ago. I’ve been using them on all the clothing I make, but hadn’t thought to put them on the cushions! And, why not? I love them and it adds a little bit of a professional look too…that’s always a plus ;) I’ve toyed with the idea of making a few and putting them in an Etsy shop to see what happens. They’ve become so second nature to me that they really only take a few hours to make from start to finish. Should I do it?

I enlarged this one a bit, making the diameter 19” instead of 17”. I like the fuller size and think it may extend the usable life as the tushies grow ;) If you want to make your own, you can easily do that with only a yard of 45” home dec fabric (or use quilting cotton reinforced with interfacing) and 2 packages of pre-made piping.

Cabo Sew-a-Long: Hemming and Finishing

We made it! That wasn’t so bad, right? All-in-all, I think this is a pretty great pattern. I love the low back and the classic look. And because of the cut, pretty much any fabric would look fab with this pattern.

The last steps are pinning and hemming the bottom. I ironed my hem before and after the I sewed it to keep it crisp. You will notice that the bottom hem is not cut straight across, so make sure that your hem stays true to that cut line. Don’t try to straighten it or you will end up with a gappy hem. The cut seems a little weird, but just go with it and you will see in the end it looks great!

If you try your top on and it has a little bit more gap near the cleavage than you like, you can do a few different things to help it:
You can pin it here, right at the top, making sure your fabric is straight and smooth and hand sew it closed right where it crosses at the top. Keep the stitches on the wrong side so they do not show through to the front.

Another option would be to add a few rows of ruffles to the neckline at the lowest point.

What I finally settled on was pinning the two bodices together and, making sure they were straight and smooth, stitched a close top stitch to the top bodice in a coordinating thread color:

It definitely helped with the overdose on cleavage factor. I certainly would say this pattern runs smaller than normal. I am typically an 8/10 for tops, and sewed the medium (10/12), and I’d say it is a little snug, especially in the bust area. But, I am confident with this fix.

Did you survive yesterday? Not so bad, right? At this point, you should have a bikini-top-looking piece. If you are using the same fabric for the lining, you get the pleasure of actually choosing which side you like best to be your right side!   I am going to spend most of today giving details and tips for installing the invisible zipper. AB gives great instructions, but they could be confusing without visual aides, so get ready for some pictures :0)

Let’s get this party started:
After you sew the 3 bottom pieces together and attach it to the top of the bodice, you should have something like the picture above.

First thing you MUST do in order for the invisible zipper to be installed correctly, is to iron the teeth down on the WRONG side of the zipper. Use your judgment on the heat, but I keep mine pretty high. I try to keep the point of my iron doing all the work. As you can see in the picture above, once ironed, the teeth are now laying FLAT

With RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, pin the zipper down per the instructions. Look carefully at the picture above. It feels totally weird to be sewing the zipper down this way and will probably mess with your mind, but trust…. as long as it looks like the above pic, you are OK

Using a zipper foot, sew the zipper down carefully, removing the pins as you go

Here it is: all sewn and pins removed

**Sidebar: I flipped the top to the other side in the next few pictures, please don't let that confuse you!**
Now, bring the other side over and now your entire top will be right side together. Take the unsewn zipper piece and pin it down to the other RIGHT side of the top. Also, I marked the bottom of the zipper where I should stop sewing to make it easier   (faint blue lines on zip, right above zipper head). Sew this side of the zipper in place

This side all done and pins removed! Make sure to clip all loose threads so you they don’t get caught in the zipper. Zip the zipper all the way up now, so the top is fully closed up.

Now pin the small bottom portion that is still unsewn below the zipper. Pull the zipper up out of the way and sew up to the zipper point.   DONE WITH THE ZIPPER!

To install the hook-and-eye, just hand sew it to the top 1/4” that was kept free at the top when you installed the zipper. I think this is probably an optional step. If you don’t install it, no sweat!

Cabo Sew-a-Long: Sewing the bodice

Are you all cut out? I’ve been stalking the Flickr Pool to see who’s playing and am excited to see you guys on the ball! Isn’t it great to have a sewing partner?!

Today we will sewing the entire top bodice. It took me about 1.5 hours, but that included time to stop and take pictures of a lot of the steps, so you should get through it easily in under a couple hours.

Let’s get to it:

First up is to create darts in the fabric to allow for our curves ;) I never mark my fabric until right before I sew it because I use an air-erasable pen. It stays visible for about 20 minutes and is perfect for those that get a little paranoid about marking up your precious fabric with things that may/may not wash out.

Once you have your dart position pinned and ironed, draw a line from point A to B so it is easier to sew a straight line. Back stitch at each point to reinforce.

After sewing the darts and the back piece to the front, you should have 4 pieces that look like this

TIP: I always find that good pressing makes for a well tailored garment. You can never press too much!

Here are both lined pieces finished and basted at the bottom per the instructions. (Steps 5H and 5I)

Because I didn’t mark the front center line when cutting, I have to go back and draw my center line. If you do this too, just make sure that when you line up the pattern, don’t line up the slanted edge where my arrow is. You can see that the pattern piece goes beyond that a 1/2” because of the seam allowance already sewn. To get the right position, line up the notches on the bottom.

Baste the two pieces together on the bottom

TIP: I never baste at the 1/2” mark because that means I have to rip them out eventually. I just baste around 1/4”, that way they will not show once I sew at the required 1/2”

Make sure to try the top on at this point to make sure it will fit well once completely sewn. Tips are given in Step 5L of the pattern to assure wearability. There is also an option later in the construction to sew the two bodice pieces together if you feel they are gapping too much, but gaps may reduce once the bottom is sewn to the top, so don’t stress!

Cabo Sew-a-Long: Tracing and Cutting

So excited to get started today! Hope your Easter break went well! Are you ready too?

For those of you who are new or just joining us, we are starting a sew-a-long for the adorable Amy Butler Cabo Halter top. You can join the Flickr group… or if you want to just watch, you are welcome to stalk ;)
I didn’t even realize that our sew-a-long is coinciding with Rae’s ever-popular Spring Top Week, so make sure to join THAT flickr group too if you are sewing along, and add your finished product to that pool too!

A few notes about this pattern:
It’s nice that the pattern only has 5 pieces. That makes for simple construction. Open up your pattern pages and find the size you want to cut. Notice that the lower front and lower back pieces are right on top of each other with just a few small differences. Be careful when tracing that you are on the right line.

OK, Let’s get started:
I always trace my pattern onto a piece of drafting/tracing paper. You can see my full tutorial HERE for tracing and cutting pattern pieces, or you can just follow along and get the jist.

I’ve never had to tape a paper pattern before, so this was a new one for me. Digital patterns of course have to be taped ‘til the cows come home. But, if you can line up two dots while wielding a piece of scotch tape, you can do this :) Make sure to cut each traced piece out fully, then tape them together.

Cut all your pieces out of the fabric. As with all Amy Butler patterns it seems that too much fabric was called for. I bet you could whittle this down to 1.5 yards easily…but don’t quote me on that. Don’t think you need a rotary cutter and weights to cut, that’s just what I do… you can always pin your pattern to the fabric and cut it with traditional scissors.

Here are all the pieces cut out and ready to go. I’m just remembering that I wanted to extend the length of the ties to get a bit longer tail hanging down the back…anyone else want to do that? If you do, just extend the pattern piece by again, taping an extension with the paper to the middle of the tie area. I would say a good 4-5” extra would be great!

Easter Outfit Duo

Wanted to share the two outfits I made little punk for Easter. I’ve pretty much given up making anything for the big punks because, you know….they’re 9, and not real hip on wearing matching pink and green bow ties that mom made!

This dress is an Oliver and S pattern that I have had For.Ev.Er, but just never got around to cutting one until now. Here is a quick review:

Pattern: Oliver and S School Photo Dress
Skill Required: Intermediate
Cost: $16
Fabric used: Cotton floral and cotton pink crosshatch (both from Joann’s)
Other notions: Invisible zipper (they have great instructions included to install one flawlessly)
Pattern Sizing: 6M-12years (I cut size 4)
True to size?: Yes
Variations: Collar: Ruffle or Flat standing Sleeves: Gathered or cuffed
Paper or Download: Paper
Instructions easy to follow?: Yes! Very thorough and detailed instructions
Alterations?: No. Made as written
Will you use this pattern again?: Maybe. There are a lot of pieces to cut on this dress. It was pretty labor intensive, but it really makes a quality garment. It is fully lined and wears easily.
What do you love most about it?: The pocket inset!! It is a darling addition to the dress that sets it apart from others I’ve sewn. I also adore the ruffled collar. I thought it might bother her by sweeping her face, but the way it is constructed, that doesn't happen.

After we got home from church, I asked her if she wanted to change into her comfies and she said No Mama. That’s always a winner in my book

Saturday, we had our annual Easter celebration at my dad’s and she wore another Whimsy Couture Pillowcase Romper . You can take a look at the first one I made and a review of the Romper HERE

I used Denise Schmidt fabric for this one and also ended up making my own bow. To tell you the truth, I don’t know if I will make my own bow again. It was so easy to use the satin ribbon when I made THIS ONE. But I do love the contrasting/matching fabric we used for it.

The adorable lace headband was inspired by See Kate Sew’s ruffled lace flower headband. Love it!

Don’t forget.... Tomorrow we start our Amy Butler Cabo Halter Top Sew-a-Long. So excited!!!

Do you know how difficult it is to take a picture of yourself, in the mirror, in a badly lit bathroom, with a 12 pound camera? Well… it’s not 12 pounds, but it felt like it after a while

I asked hubs to help me and he tried, but he wasn’t into it, and the shots he took showed it…every one was me with my mouth open :) I guess if I would’ve stopped telling him what to do, some of them would’ve turned out…

Anyway, the pictures are to show you my latest DIY article for Momtastic using good, old-fashioned sewing trim. I love these! Super easy and so stylish to strap on your head when you want a little more ooopmh to the ‘do.

Tutorial: Pom-Pom Kerchief

I first made a kerchief for little punk when I made THIS outfit. It was super simple and over-the-top adorable and I knew I wanted to make a tutorial for it. So, I got to work and added in one of my favorite trims, pom-poms! The poms make it extra special and adds just the right style to this boutique-esqe accessory. You can easily keep the poms off if you’d like a more simple look, but why, oh why would you do that?

Just look at the cuteness…

Let’s make one:

MATERIALS

Scrap piece of fabric at least 18”x12”
Kerchief Template (Click to download for FREE) Cut out along lines. Because my scanner was having a bad day, some of the lines may not show up fully. Just use the lines as a guide…c’mon, it’s a triangle :)
1 yard pom trim
up to 22” of 1/4” or 3/8” elastic

Cut out your fabric using the kerchief pattern

On the wrong side, position the pom trim towards the outside edge and sew on close to the edge to create another row of stitches perpendicular to the first one

Just like that! Sew poms on the other side too!

Now, take your elastic and measure your child’s head right where the elastic will sit when the kerchief is complete. Our measurement was 19.5”. Cut to 19.5”. Lay it right on top of the raw edge centered across the top, and sew elastic on using a straight stitch.

Bring the two edges together and use a zig zag stitch to secure together

Strap on your beauty and let her run free!

Strawberry Pizza

Today I've got a quick and fab.u.lous pie for you. Strawberry Pizza! It's perfect for Easter and just the ticket to usher in Spring with plump, juicy strawberries. I'm almost certain we've had it every Easter since the beginning of time. It's always the most anticipated ...and the first to get devoured...

Ingredients
Pre-baked pie shell
8oz. pkg. cream cheese (not low fat), softened a bit
1 cup sugar, divided
1 Egg
4 cups strawberries, divided
2 T. cornstarch
1/4 cup water

Beat the cream cheese and add 1/3 cup sugar and then the egg until mixed well

Pour into baked and cooled pie shell. Bake at 250 for 10-12 minutes. Middle should be set. Allow to cool.

Meanwhile, place 2 cups of the strawberries with 2/3 cup sugar. Mash while heating over medium heat. Heat until bubbly.

Dissolve the cornstarch in 1/4 cup water

Add to the crushed strawberry mixture, stir and lightly boil a few minutes until liquid has cleared. Allow to cool.

Wash the other 2 cups of strawberries and halve

Place on top of the cooled cream cheese layer

Pour the cooled crushed strawberry mixture on top. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

So refreshing! Enjoy!
