"God Knows the Big Picture"

Proverbs 31 Speaker

Exodus 29:46, “They will know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of Egypt so that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God.” (NIV)

I’d been reading in Exodus when the Israelites were leaving Egypt and God told them to ask for gold and valuables from their neighbors. He said, “Tell the people that men and women alike are to ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold” (Exodus 11:2). Now, for the Israelites, this was probably very strange. First of all, how awkward for them as slaves to approach their masters and ask them for, not just a handout, but a valuable handout! They had to have been questioning what God was asking them to do. Secondly, they probably were wondering why in the world God would have them tote all that stuff when they were obviously going on a long journey. Hadn’t God heard the phrase, “Traveling light?”

Then I got to the part when God instructed the Israelites to make the priests’ garments and the tabernacle furnishings. As He carefully listed off what the people should make and how to make it, it was clear that God was thinking ahead when He asked them to take the gold and other valuables from the Egyptians. He knew in advance what He was asking and how it would all turn out. Exodus 12:35-36 says, “The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. The Lord had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians.” Even though the Israelites couldn’t see the big picture of what they were facing, God could. He had it all under control. He didn’t ask them to do anything He hadn’t already prepared them to do.

This story was a great comfort to me today as I pondered the “Egypts” in my life. I thought of the times when God asked me to trust Him and obey—even when what He was asking sounded crazy. I thought of how He knows the future and provides our needs ahead of time. I thought of how He can soften hearts as He did with the Egyptians and how I can trust every situation to Him. He sees the big picture, when all I see is what is right in front of me. I need to rely on Him when the future looks scary. I need to say “yes” to whatever He asks of me, instead of arguing based on my limited view. I can only have a big picture of life when I see it through His eyes. That truth continues to bring me peace—even in the midst of this crazy, mixed-up world. I hope that it will bring you peace and hope today in whatever you may be facing in life.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, help me to rely on You, and not on what is in front of me. Help me to trust in the outcome simply because I know it is in Your very capable hands. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Today, I'm bringing you some additional info so you can be a fashionista in-the-know! This is my beauty-tip list for you:

Vintage jewelry. Can you say charm bracelet? Ask your mom, grandma or aunt to dig deep into their jewelry boxes and find an old charm bracelet from high school days. Tell them that you want to wear it! Try anything with ribbons, pearls and crystal beads.

Embellished tees. Leave your necklaces and scarves at home, and wear a Tee that’s already decorated. Or buy a do-it-yourself kit and add some jewels to a T-shirt you already own.

Neon. Bright is in! Wear combos of black and pink, red and purple or neon green!

Sparkly shoes. These beauties will dress up your casual jeans or finish your dressiest dress. Find them in wedges, heels and ballet flats.

Metallic eye makeup. OK, go easy on this one, but a little sparkle is fun for your homecoming dance or a fun Saturday night out with friends. Don’t go overboard, but add a little dash of gold or silver in place of eye color. Try Fine Wink by “Wet ‘n Wild” for $1.99 at most drugstores. It’s a soft pinky-beige you’re sure to love!

Green nail polish. Go green on your nails and show the world you care!

Wavy hair. Go natural with your curly hair, or use a curling iron to add some soft waves to your straight hair.

Leopard print. This fashion statement is BIG this season. Find a belt, purse or shoes with this outstanding print to show your style.

Leggings. These come in patterns, denim, solids and textures. Wear a long and loose shirt with this fall and winter trend.

Ruffles. Wear a pretty blouse and soften any look with ruffles. Find them on purses, vests, sweaters and skirts.

Where is God When I Hurt?

We tend to do great with God when life is good, but what happens when God allows hard times in our lives? We get angry. We begin to doubt. We question why He lets things happen. He could have prevented this so why didn’t He?

Life crises tend to cause faith crises.

Breaking up with your boyfriend.
The death of a parent or grandparent.
The death of a friend who didn’t know Jesus personally.
A natural disaster or tragedy that causes the death of thousands.
Finding out your best friend betrayed you.

It’s unrealistic for us to think that if we’re Christian we should just be able to accept the situations God hands us and smile through them. As Christians we should be have hope remembering God is preparing something great for us after this life. But the pain we experience in this life is very real and it hurts! We have to feel our pain in order to get through it.

When you face a hard time, these things may help you get through it:

-Tell God how you really feel. God already knows, but He wants us to be real with Him. Our true feelings – even the ugliest ones – don’t make Him love us any less. When we’re real with Him, He can begin healing our hurts. But if we can’t admit to Him our true feelings, chances are we can’t admit them to ourselves either, and we’ll be stuck.

-Read some of the Psalms that express anger and pain. For instance: Psalm 31, 71, 73, 77 and 109. Also, check out Lamentations. I bet you’ll identify with some of the writers’ feelings.

-Find someone to talk to who will encourage you or just listen. Talking to someone helps you process through your situation.

-Pray a simple prayer for what you need. For instance: God help me! Help me get through this. Help me see & feel You here because I feel like You’ve left me.

-Read some of the Psalms for encouragement. For instance: Psalm 40, 121, 116, 136, and 138.

-Finally, try to look for the good in your situation. Can you find one thing to be thankful for? Thank God for it.

The key to coming out of a hard situation well is dealing with your pain and feelings and with God as soon as possible. If you don’t, you may experience harmful consequences later in life, such as bitterness, rage, consistent unhappiness, cynicism, depression, or unbelief.

As Angela pointed out yesterday, God deeply cares for us and what we’re going through. He is a safe place for us to express our emotion. Jesus says, “Come to me all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Also David says, “Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall” (Psalm 55:22).

The answer to the question, where is God when I hurt?, is that He’s right there with you. He is always with you and there for you in every situation. We’re here for you too. "Let the Water Flow"

Psalm 56:8, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” (NLT)

Isn’t God so good to us? He knows every heart break, pain, and hurt. I believe if we realized the extent of His care in our lives we would do nothing but serve Him. His goodness and His love are beyond amazing! Did you know God is so near to us that He collects and records each one of our tears? Does that amaze you? It does me.

Every tear shed is precious to Him. So precious in fact that He collects them in a bottle as a person would a precious treasure. There is something to that, don’t you think? The Bible says, “He is close to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18,NIV).The Lord is so close, so intimately involved in your life, that He keeps a journal of every single tear you shed!

I joke when I talk about all the tears I have shed. They are enough to fill an ocean, so the bottle God uses to collect them must be HUGE! Seriously though, wouldn’t it be neat if in front of our place in heaven there would be a beautiful fountain filled with our tears? What an amazing reminder of all God has brought us through.

In heaven there will be no crying, no tears. That gives me hope that no matter the heartache here, it is only temporary. This world, along with all of its problems and tears, is only part of our journey. The best is yet to come.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for being so mindful of us. You know every good and bad thing. You never lose sight of us. Thank You for being a Father who understands and deeply cares for us. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

"Curtis"

Matthew 25:40, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” (NIV)

“Please help. Looking for work. God bless you,” his sign read, which he stood by the road holding.

He was not just some man or hopeless bum. His name was Curtis. When I drove by him that day, God nudged me to do something. But I reasoned with Him, What can I possibly do? I don’t just want to hand him money.

I continued driving. God would not let Curtis leave my mind, though. Okay Lord, if You want me to do something, show me what. Nearing home, I saw Christian, a good friend who is always helping others in need, particularly the impoverished and homeless. When I asked Christian what I should do, he gave me some good pointers: lock your doors; roll down your window just enough to ask if he’s hungry or thirsty; if so, meet him in front of the convenience store where many people are; buy him some food and a drink; and pray with him.

I was so grateful for Christian’s advice. At the same time, I was still afraid! What if something happened to me? However, trusting this was what God wanted, I drove back to Curtis.

After a run of bad luck, Curtis was trying to make his way to Georgia to get assistance. However, he didn’t have enough money to get there. He was hungry, thirsty, and thankful that I stopped to help him.

Despite fear and nervousness, I was excited. God gave me an opportunity to meet someone’s need, to quit thinking about myself for ten minutes and focus my attention on a complete stranger, who oddly enough seemed familiar.

The Bible says, “Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!” (Hebrews 13:2) I sensed God with me while I was with Curtis. Perhaps he was an angel, or perhaps he was Jesus Himself! After all, whatever we do to the “least” of our brothers and sisters, we do it to Jesus too.

Fear can paralyze us in these situations. We may fear what might happen to us or rejection. Even so, as a teacher once said, “Don’t ask God to take away your fear. Ask Him to help you be faithful and bold despite your fear.”

This doesn’t mean we intentionally put ourselves in dangerous situations. We must be wise. However, if God calls us to help someone in need, we better not ignore Him! Otherwise, as Jesus says, “…I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat…thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink…a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me…I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me” (Matthew 25:42, 45, NIV).

Who is the Curtis in your life whom God is asking you to help? Don’t miss the opportunity!

Prayer:

Jesus, Thank You for taking care of each of us, including those who are poor and in need. When You call me to help someone in need – to be Your hands and feet – please help me be faithful to You. Remind me that whatever I do to another person, I’m doing it to You also. In Jesus' name, Amen.

List the gifts and talents God has given you which you can use to help others in need. Look at the needs of those around you – at school, in your neighborhood, at church, at soccer practice or dance lessons – and find ways to begin using these things to help others.

Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (NLT)

Colossians 4:5, “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.” (NIV)

"Compassion"

Ephesians 6:18, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” (NIV)

When I transitioned into my new college life I prayed to God for a variety of things. Specifically, I wanted a burning passion for Him, to listen to the Holy Spirit carefully, and to feel and see God in all people and in all circumstances.

One Saturday night in my dorm room, I decided to see what was new on the Proverbs 31 Ministries’ home page. I came across a video of a visit to Ecuador some of their speakers and staff took with Compassion International (click here to watch). I pushed play, not ready for what I was going to encounter. Within seconds my heart crumbled. I cried tear after tear and was surprised I had all those tears in me.

There was one young boy in particular who held my attention. His eyes were closed tightly and his hands clasped as if he were right in the presence of God. I paused the video and just looked at him. His prayer looked pleading, as if in desperate need. And he looked like he was passionately in love with God. He left me speechless.

I sat in my room looking around in awe. I yearn to love God with a passion that my heart cannot contain and here’s this little boy with that passion. I finished the video and knew I didn’t stumble across it for nothing. I had prayed to see God in all things and He clearly showed me His answer through this video.

What to do now? I went to the Compassion International web site and read their information on how to help children like this little boy. There were thousands of precious faces from different parts of the world, all with needs. Unfortunately I couldn’t donate money monthly. I felt devastated. I wanted to do more than what I was financially able. I looked at their faces and profiles and then it hit me. I can’t donate money, I can’t visit them, and I can’t tell them it’s going to be okay…but I can pray.

I have the ability to pray for them, their country, brothers and sisters, parents and their jobs, the development facilities that care for them, their health and that they find and seek God for the rest of their lives. So I began. I clicked on each individual profile, read the name and prayed.

As young women we have the ability to do more than we can imagine through God. He is everlasting and knows the lives and hearts of these children. They might not be able to hear me, but I pray anyways. I know they need prayers just as much as they need support.

So do you care to join me? I still have about a 1000 more profiles to pray for! Help me pray for these souls. We have the ability to help them in this way. God will be honored, they will be blessed, and we will be changed.

Prayer:

Dear God, we sometimes forget the power of prayer. Let us come to understand that as the Creator of the world, Your hands and eyes are on the needy. Allow us as Your daughters to care for those who are less fortunate. Thank You for the many blessings You shower upon us. Allow our hearts to be thankful even in the midst of hard times. We love You Lord. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

What Are You Doing This Halloween?

If you haven't already made plans, why not get together with some friends and make this Halloween a chance to reach out to others and share your faith?

Here are a few ideas:

Idea #1: Get your friends together who don't attend church, make some yummy treats for them (like LeAnn's cookies below!) and then go to a Judgement House event. Judgement House is "a dramatic walk-through presentation about the truth of people's choices and their consequences both in this life and the next.

Recipe: Chocolate Drizzled Peanut Butter Cookies

I played around with a few peanut butter cookie recipes and came up with one that I really love. This recipe has LOTS of peanut butter and isn't that the point of a peanut butter cookie? While the end result was truly yummy... the cookies needed just a little something extra to push them over the top. Sounded like a good excuse for a little dark chocolate. After all... dark chocolate is good for you... right?

Ingredients:

2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 large eggs
An 18 oz. jar of extra crunchy peanut butter
2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup 60% cocoa chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Place butter and both sugars in a large mixing bowl and beat until light and creamy. Add vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, beating for about 30 seconds after each addition. Add peanut butter and continue to beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder. Stir with a whisk to combine. Add the dry mixture to the peanut butter mixture and beat on low speed until all the flour is incorporated. Do not over mix at this point.

Drop the cookie dough by big spoonfuls (heaping tablespoons) onto an ungreased cookie sheet. You want them about 2 inches apart because they will spread a little as they cook.

Pour about a quarter of a cup of sugar onto a small plate. Dip the tines of a fork into the sugar and then make a crisscross on each cookie to flatten slightly.

Bake the cookies for approximately 14 minutes. Do not overcook. The edges will appear very lightly brown. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven onto a rack and let stand for a couple of minutes to set. After 2-3 minutes, remove the cookies from the cookie sheet and let cool completely on a wire rack.

Repeat until you have used all of the dough. You should have about 4 dozen cookies.

Once the cookies are completely cool, line them up on waxed paper.

Melt the chocolate chips in a glass dish in the microwave. (This takes about 1 minute on a low setting in my microwave but ovens vary so check yours frequently.)

With a fork, drizzle the melted chocolate over the cookies. Cool in the refrigerator just long enough to set the chocolate.

Store cookies in an airtight container, foil, or ziplock bag.

Hey, it’s me again! Last time I talked to you guys I was telling you all about fall trends. Winter weather will be approaching fast and it will soon be cold.
It’s time to talk about some toasty trends!

During the winter you need to stay warm but that doesn’t mean you can’t look great while you wrap up.

First of all, you need to keep your toes warm so why not keep them snuggly and cozy with some furry wool lined boots? These cool boots go great with skinny jeans so you can tuck the bottom of your jeans inside them. Yes, boots are in but converse tennis shoes still are too! Why not add some snazzy new socks for a funky new look?

What would a fabulous pair of boots be without a jacket or wrap to go with them?

This winter wraps are in. Wraps are made of long cardigan-like fabric that you can tie up or just wear as-is. Since a wrap is not made of the thickest material, wear a long sleeve shirt underneath. If it’s really cold and you’ll be outdoors you can wear a pea coat with a tie-belt attached to the waist. There are many vibrant, beautiful colors to choose from and with a colorful, snappy scarf you have a great way to brighten things up on a cold winter’s day. Scarves are a terrific accessory that can change an outfit but for a little different look try one that is triangular shaped, perhaps one with a checkered pattern on it that will have you looking fab-YOU-lous!

Finally, if you want variety this winter, just add a wool hat or headband. Try a headband with a simple sophisticated bow or feather on the side. It will look awesome with a scarf and jacket. It also may help control crazy hair when the sleet and snow comes down!

I like how I can always depend on God, through whatever I'm going through. I can always trust Him, even when it feels like no one can help me. I move frequently, so I know what it's like to feel helpless and like nothing is in my control. Then I remember that God's the one who's in control, and I pray for Him to help me get through it all, and I always do. I know that I can depend on God no matter what, and that's what I like most about Him.

"Jesus Bling"

Exodus 34:29, “When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD." (NIV)

Being in style, wearing the “right clothes” was one way I thought I could be part of the “in” crowd. I saw the “in” crowd. I studied them. The “in” crowd was where I longed to be. But much to my dismay I never made it into the “in” crowd. But, what I thought was my dismay was really God’s demonstration of His sovereign hand on my life.

Though the pull to be part of the “in” crowd has lost its grip on my life over the years, my love for style has not changed. It is hard to know what to wear and what not to wear. I want to be stylish but I have deep desire to represent myself correctly as a woman of God. This can be challenging in today’s society because what is most popular typically doesn’t help us represent ourselves as women of God.

A few years ago Shari Braendel joined our team at Proverbs 31 Ministries. With her special gifts of grace, love, and humor, she begin to slowly teach us "what not to wear" by educating us on what looks good and what does not look good on us as individuals. She has taught me how to represent myself as a woman of God and still be in style.

After being around Shari, I have developed a love for "bling." “Bling” is a relatively new word that I have added to my vocabulary. I must say, I embrace the word with passion. Apparently my love for bling shows. Recently a friend gave me a bracelet she had made for me. I squealed with delight when I opened the box. As I showed my husband the bracelet he said, "You love your bling, don't you? But Jesus is your bling." I thought, “Yes, He is.”

The Lord took my thoughts straight to Moses. I thought of how bright the glow of his face must have been when He came down from Mount Sinai after meeting with the LORD. I pondered the question, "Does my face radiate Jesus? Do those who see me know that I have met with the Lord?"

How about you? Are you wearing the "Jesus bling?" When you walk the halls of your school do others see a difference in you - the Jesus difference? Ask God how you can shine brighter for Him today. The simple truth is this phrase I borrow from my friend Lysa, "Others will not want to know about your Jesus until they see the reality of Jesus in your life."

Prayer:

Dear Lord, help me to gladly put on a garment of praise today. I want the desire of my heart to be making You famous. I desire to boldly and unashamedly proclaim Your glorious name in all that I say, think, and do. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

"To Wait or Not to Wait...The Banana Blunder"

Willing to do anything to give my daily ritual of a chocolate breakfast drink a shake up, I grabbed one of the new bananas next to the blender this morning. Ok, so they were a little green at the top, but the rest of the banana was golden and ripe. Immediately after breaking off the top, I knew I was heading in the wrong direction. You know that resistance you get when you start to pull back the banana peel and part of it clings to the fruit? Well, I ignored that warning, threw the hard banana into the blender and hit the liquefy button. I anticipated a great new taste as I watched the yummy chocolate and banana swirl.

Wow...were my taste buds in for a BIG disappointment. Yuck! It tasted chalky, a little bitter and pasty. Even after that initial swallow, I continued to gulp down my breakfast. I couldn’t quit now - I had already mixed it together. Of course, an hour later I totally regretted my decision. My stomach wanted to remove that banana! How I wished I had waited one more day to eat the banana. One more day would have made all the difference between gross and great!

Do you ever feel like your life has been a series of short stories on waiting? Waiting to get to high school. Waiting to get out of high school. Waiting for your driver’s license. Waiting for a car. Waiting to start dating. Waiting for a date. I don't know about you, but sometimes while in the middle of waiting, it seems like some of my deepest dreams and desires will never come to pass or I feel that God has forgotten about them.

Now, I am starting to see life in a new light. I see that sometimes I have actually made choices to wait; waiting for the Lord to do His thing in His time. This waiting has been good and has led to many blessings, like waiting to give away my virginity until I got married. Don't get me wrong; there have definitely been those times when I didn't wait. For example, I didn’t wait to buy a car that really was reliable; instead I just bought what I could afford. Hopefully, as I grow though, I will see the true benefits of waiting for the Lord and those times of getting ahead of God will be less frequent.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, Please help me to be patient when you call me to wait. Sometimes, it is so hard, Lord. Help me to trust You, knowing that every time You will do exactly what is best for me and what will glorify You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

We live in an age where the media screams we must look perfect. The more we see beautiful models, the more insecure we become with ourselves. In Leviticus 19:18 (CEV), God tells us in the Ten Commandments, “love others as much as you love yourself,” but do you really love yourself?

How can you love others if you don’t? When you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror at yourself, do you see a beautiful girl, or one who needs to put on her make-up to be beautiful? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think make-up is bad at all. I think it’s great to want to look your best. But are you confident in yourself, how God made naturally made you, and how you look without make-up first?I totally understand why we young women are so insecure in who we are. Lately, there’s been a lot of controversy over a Ralph Lauren model who was photoshopped. The model was a size 4, and they photoshopped her picture and fired her for being too fat. Come again, a size 4??? Ladies, that is not fat. And it’s not healthy for a size 4 woman to be considered “fat.”

It’s not rocket science why girls are so insecure with their body types. Or their faces for that matter. Watch this crazy photoshopping done to a woman from the neck up in this video:

As I watched that ad, I realized not even models are flawless. Their photos are fake and fixed. The girl behind all that looks normal. She looks like you and I. If we can be confident in how we look and who we are, and not try to change ourselves, we can be truly beautiful, from the inside flowing out. This goes for your personality too, why try to be somebody else who you're not? God made you beautiful, now it’s time for you to accept it. Smile with confidence! =)

"A Little Lesson in Weed-eating"

Hosea 10:12, “Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD.” (NIV)

This week, I rolled up my sleeves and spent an entire afternoon pulling weeds from my yard. Thankfully, my family helped me in this back-breaking, nail-splitting task. What had started out as a handful of weeds when we first moved into our house had turned into an epidemic of unruly weeds scattered across our yard. “Why, oh why didn’t I do this sooner?”, I thought as I yanked out the umpteenth weed from the ground. After all, I could have saved us so much trouble!

Like the bright dandelions children pick for their mothers, some weeds look sweet when in reality they are dressed-up parasites that spread like wildfire. With weeds, there should be no putting off until tomorrow what we can do today.

Sometimes I wonder why God created weeds and troublesome insects like mosquitoes. The Bible says that “The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble” (Proverbs 16:4, ESV). Although I still don’t know what God had in mind when He made mosquitoes, I think I’ve found God’s special message in weeds. While I was working in my back yard, the Lord challenged me to begin pulling out the “weeds” in my own life.

Just as every good gardener devotes time to weed his or her garden, we also need to protect the soil of our hearts, so that the Lord may transform our hearts into sachets of His pleasing and holy aroma. “Weeds” like unforgiveness, pride, doubt, gossip, disobedience, anger or lust choke God’s Word in our lives. These cripple the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22).

With each passing day, these weeds dig their roots deeper and deeper into the soil of our hearts until we need to ask our family, friends, and most importantly God, for help. We cannot free ourselves from sin by mowing over it, because weeds reproduce from their roots. Only through prayer, praise and Scripture can we break up the hard unplowed ground of our hearts and begin pulling out our “weeds” – one at a time.

Weeding my yard this week I learned that this is not always pleasant. It’s a constant struggle. However, if we are diligent, we won’t need to take out the hoe and spend hours weed-eating. By keeping watch over our soil and watering it daily with God’s Word, we can clear the way for an abundant harvest of righteousness, leaving little room for the pesky weeds that try and take root in our hearts.

I encourage you today to pull up your sleeves and join me in the garden of your heart. The sooner we get started the better!

Prayer:

Lord, thank You so much for the fruit of Your Spirit that is already living in my heart. I realize there are many “weeds” in my life that are disturbing Your fruit’s growth. Father, You are the true gardener (John 15:1). Help me tend my garden. Show me the “weeds” I need to pull out of my life and thank You for planting Your seeds of righteousness in their place as I study Your Word. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Spend a couple minutes in silence asking the Lord to help you identify the “weeds” in your life. What are some ways you can “uproot” them and prevent them from sprouting up again in your heart?

Once you spot your “weeds,” use a Bible thesaurus to look up scriptures that address those areas. I encourage you to use these verses as good “fertilizer” for your heart.

"My Attitude is Lazy"

Romans 3:31, “But by shifting our focus from what we do to what God does, don't we cancel out all our careful keeping of the rules and ways God commanded? Not at all. What happens, in fact, is that by putting that entire way of life in its proper place, we confirm it.” (The Message)

By nature I’m not a lazy person. When I was in college, I held down four jobs, earned two degrees, lead worship for a campus ministry, and was involved in many clubs and organizations.

Often I would have liked to slow down and quit some of those things. Yet I knew God’s plan is for me to stick them out. I had to learn to trust that when I felt sluggish and lazy, God would give me the physical energy to get through each task. Even more, I trusted Him to help my attitude when it became lazy.

What’s a lazy attitude? Have you ever been so caught up in your busy schedule that you forget about other responsibilities? Or you don’t check yourself before responding to others and you bite their heads off? Or so many things are running through your head you don’t focus on the task – or person – in front of you? That’s what I’m talking about.

I feel pretty good about having my priorities in order, but often my heart isn’t focused where it should be. For instance, one day when talking with my roommate about something very important to her, I tuned her out. I was there physically – I even prayed with her! But my attitude was lazy and I didn’t fully respond like I should have to my friend in need.

Another time, I had to leave a meeting early to get to another job. Even though I explained ahead of time, my boss became angry when I announced my departure. Instead of calmly re-explaining, I reacted in anger and raised my voice at him. I didn’t take time to check my attitude and respond appropriately.

When we get bogged down, we often react negatively. It’s self-centeredness in which we are more concerned about ourselves and what we have to get done, than caring for those around us. You can see that for a busy person a lazy attitude is a definite threat, and instead of being selfless, we choose to be selfish.

Lazy attitudes also mix up our focus. As busyness pulls us in different directions, chances are we will not be able to concentrate on the task at hand because we’re too busy thinking about the next one! Not only will we probably do a poor job on our current task, but it may also affect our daily walk with God. Our intentions might be to read a devotion and pray, but a lazy attitude won’t rope in wandering thoughts of that day’s agenda and we will lose our focus on God and His plan for our day.

What can we do to change a lazy attitude? Focus on God and the things He is doing in our lives. Instead of freaking out because of too much to do, commit it all to God first. Ask for strength to do His will and for self-control when tempted to tune others out or react in a harsh manner. Trust Him to work out the details, and then you can concentrate on keeping your attitude hard-working.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I know that sometimes I get so busy that my attitude isn’t what it should be. Please grant me the mindfulness to know when I need to change my attitude and refocus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

If you haven’t seen leggings when shopping at the mall then you’ve definitely had your head in too much homework.

Leggings are so fashionable this season that you’ll certainly see them on Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and any other teen celebrity you know and love!

So how do you wear leggings? Well, first things first. Leggings are best when worn in a darker color like black, chocolate, gray or dark denim. But don’t be afraid to wear exciting prints like leopard, polka dots and those with stripes or other fun prints. When choosing leggings, make sure they fit you correctly. These fashion items are best in a style that ends at your ankle, or slightly above, a few inches below your knees. Wear a long style top over them like a short dress or a long sweater that comes just a few inches above your knees. If belts are your thing, then add a wide one to cinch your waist and finally, add boots or flats with this new, hot trend.

Your look won’t be complete unless you add some big, bold accessories. Buy some bangles for your wrist, a brightly colored watch, and some big hoop earrings. A scarf knotted in front, hanging low, will bring a definite splash to any combination when leggings are a part of it and will have you looking like a fun fashionista!

Take a look at this picture so you can know what NOT to wear. Even though this is a featured look for teens, just because it’s in style, doesn’t make it right. So leave this look alone. Like I said above, leggings are meant to be worn with something long on top, NOT something short. And girl, those shoes! Yikes!
