Choosing Faith over Fear: Kristian Lanza’s Story Living with Hemophilia

Marriage conflicts, divorce, loss of job, critical illness, death of a loved one, are some of the stressful life events that most people face. No one is immune to fear, but in times of desperation, let us remember that we have God. Allow me to share an inspiring story of a child with hemophilia.

I had the privilege to interview Kristian Lanzar, the very first wish kid recipient of Make-A-Wish. Kristian openly shared his struggles battling with hemophilia, a type of blood disorder. People with hemophilia take longer than normal for bleeding to stop. There is no cure yet for this type of critical illness but there are ways and treatment to manage complications.

Make a Wish, Kristian!

Kristian was a 10-year old boy back then, suffering from hemophilia, a medical condition that causes him to bleed severely at the slightest injury. His wish was to sing a song to the world. His dream was fulfilled in time for the millennium celebration when he sang with Regine Velasquez and 2,000 other children at the grand fountain of The Peninsula Manila. A momentous event not only for Kristian, but also for all the kids who are fighting against critical illnesses. It was broadcasted live via satellite to 60 countries.

He can still remember where exactly he stands during the performance and how it all started. Kristian revealed to us that the wish was just a "spur of the moment". Suddenly, I was reminded of the many "spur of the moment, wishes and prayers" whispered and were granted all because of God's grace.

Pain became part of his life but despite the challenges, Kristian learned to live with it. He went to school and enjoyed collecting toys. One of his fond memories is being the recipient of Make-a-Wish. As he tells this story, it felt like I was brought back to more than ten years ago when he performed and sang to the world. Surely, it was a wonderful experience not only for Kristian and his family but also for thousands of children who performed that New Year's eve. Indeed, a wish granted!

The wish to sing to the world did not end there. Many firsts came, Kristian was sent to Arizona to speak with Make-A-Wish International. There he met Chuck Norris and other Hollywood stars. Until now, I felt the excitement as he tells his travel story in United States, a wonderful experiences he can’t imagine. This was all made possible with Make-A-Wish, the first and only non-profit wish granting organization in the country, with the mission of creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

Thriving and Surviving

With the holiday season in full swing, the rest of the country may be feeling care-free and busy. Sometimes, we also forget people who need us the most. Chronic illness has somehow clouded my experience of Christmas. For the past three years, someone in the family has been diagnosed with cancer and it hurts me to see them in pain. But I was moved by Kristian's story of hope and strong faith.

"Hemophilia is a lifetime condition," says Kristian. “I make sure to be mindful and careful of myself. I am just grateful that I am still here and alive, believing there’s a purpose.” He recalled frequent hospitalization and extreme body pain because of his condition. But despite many school absences, he finished school well.

He also shared fond childhood memories spending Christmas in the hospital and meeting Santa giving presents to kids in the hospital.

"Christmas is still Christmas even though I'm in the hospital" he said. "I am a happy go lucky person, pero deep inside I am also hurting," he added. But with the love of family, trials and pain become more bearable."

Now that he’s an adult, Kristian teaches kids in the foundation how to manage bleeding disorder with less strenuous activities. He taught them to memorize this pneumonic RICE - rest, ice, compress, and elevate. Hemophilia is not curable, but it can be managed with medication and prevent complications. Kristian is right when he said, "It's better to know your condition, so you know how to live with it."

Choosing Faith over Fear

Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

"To my fellow Make-a-Wish Kid, if there's doubt and questioning why you are sick, just be strong. You really need to make your faith stronger, with the love of family and faith in God. Believe in yourself and believe in the Lord. They still have the purpose so trust in the Lord."

Kristian has been working with a tech company for almost 10 years now. Outside work, he spends his time with Hemophilia Advocates - Philippines, an organization advocating people with hemophilia. Being a homebody, his hobby is collecting action figures such as X Men.

Through talking with Kristian, I have learned that it is vital to accept pain and not to fight it. Pain is not just physical. There's pain that’s deep within us. There’s pain that makes everyday life too heavy to carry. Maybe we feel there should be something deeper to our pain - a meaning or symbolism, if you will. So how do we continue to live life with purpose?

Kristian is challenging us all to face not just the holiday season but everyday with a purpose in life. We might even have the greatest Christmas this year if we would just go to our family Christmas events or spend the day with our immediate family. Show up, be present, and find something to be grateful for. Rather than giving up, keep trying, just like what Kristian did. We must make the most of each day. People with critical illness may sometimes miss out the festivities, but it doesn’t mean they can’t be happy. Life is not always ideal, but it doesn't mean it's not worth living.

Nonprofit organization Make-A-Wish® Philippines is gearing up for its first-ever charity golf tournament - Swing for Wishes - a landmark event to celebrate the foundation’s 25th anniversary in the country.

Guided by its mission to bring hope, strength, and joy to children with critical illnesses, Make-A-Wish® Philippines has granted 5,507 wishes and counting since its establishment in 2000. Now in its 25th year, the organization partnered with COMCO Mundo League of Enterprises to amplify its efforts during this important milestone.

Make-A-Wish® Philippines aims to channel the proceeds from the upcoming Swing for Wishes charity golf tournament towards granting the life-changing wishes of 525 children with critical illnesses. In line with this, the foundation calls on aspiring golfers, enthusiasts, and professionals to join this important milestone and to help make children’s wishes come true, one swing at a time.

The previous years were quite challenging for our family as we dealt with health concerns. If we are friends on social media, you've probably seen my posts about my late sister-in-law who passed away due to metastatic breast cancer. Since her diagnosis, I became more interested in naturopathy, natural healing and integrative medicine. I enjoy attending and participating in health and wellness fairs and activities.

The most recent that I attended is the Health and Wellness Conference and Expo (HWONFEX) in SMX Manila. It's a three-day wellness event and their 4th staging of the Philippines’ pioneering and premier expo dedicated to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. This year, HWONFEX aims to inspire Filipinos to lead a healthier, happier, and more meaningful lives. The three-day wellness event was attended by hundreds of visitors and health enthusiasts.

Here are some of the highlights of the event last Sept. 5-7 at SMX Manila.

HWONFEX 2025 was formally opened by Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, who commended the event’s objective of promoting the Philippines as a wellness tourism destination and affirmed the government’s support for the movement.

“It is said that when you arrive in the Philippines, you arrive as a guest and yet, you leave as a family,” she pointed out in her keynote address. ”That is the Filipino brand of wellness, that is the Filipino brand of care. This is what all of you have championed for our country."

Ms. Catherine Turvill, Wellness Tourism Association of the Philippines (WeTAP) President, who gave the opening remarks, said: “The region is coming together to make ASEAN a wellness hub. We are not competing; we are working together. There is a very strong call now for us to go back to our roots and highlight it for the world.”.

The opening ceremony was attended by guests of honor who graced the event were: TPB COO Margarita Montemayor Nograles, Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Dr. Emmie Liza Perez-Chiong, DOH Undersecretary Ms. Farwa Hombre, Department of Agriculture Assistant Secretary Atty. Christopher Anarna, Former DOT Secretary Mina Gabor, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) OIC, Health Services Dr. Janice A. Saraza, DOT Undersecretaries Shahlimar Hofer Tamano, Verna Buensuceso, Rica Bueno, and Ferdinand Jumapao, Assistant Secretaries Judilyn Quiachon and Ronald Conopio, DOT Director Dr. Paulo Benito S. Tugbang, and Deputy TESDA Director General, Ms. Nelly Nita N. Dillera.

The mind-body connection, which focused on how physical health brings about mental health and vice versa, was a recurring theme throughout the conference. Perfectly aligned with the HWONFEX’s tagline “Go and Get Better!”, this theme proved to be very popular as shown, for instance, by the enthusiastic audience reception to the presentations of Dr. Lourdes “Honey” A. Carandang, a clinical psychologist and national social scientist who talked about “Mental Health and Resilience in the Workplace,” and Mr. Edric Mendoza, Maxwell Leadership Philippines President who discussed “Leadership in Wellness.”

Another much applauded number was the talk on “Revitalizing the Body” by Dr. Atoie “Doc Atoie” Arboleda, a naturopathy practitioner who included spiritual health as an added benefit to the mind-body synergy.

The focus on traditional and alternative healthcare practices was another HWONFEX feature that attracted huge interest. Not only did visitors make this conference session, one of the highlights of the event’s opening day, a standing-room-only affair, but they also flocked to the booths that were offering these traditional practices.

The well-attended conference session on integrative and alternative healthcare practices was conducted by the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC), an attached agency of the Department of Health. Dr. Ma. Teresa C. Iñigo, PITAHC Director General, opened the session that featured talks and demonstrations on hilot, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), acupuncture, chiropractic, and the ancient Indian ayurveda.

But the PITAHC session was more than just a showcase of traditional wellness practices. As Dr Iñigo emphasized, it was part of the agency’s campaign to reclaim the Philippines’ healing heritage and to promote safe, effective, and accessible healthcare options for all Filipinos.

As Macky Beltran Soriano, HWONFEX organizer, said in her welcome remarks, this yearly event was – and will continue to be – inspired by the Bible’s Book of Job 21:23, which proclaims that God’s design is for us to live in full strength and vitality in our appointed time, free of pain and diseases.

“Regardless of age or health, we thrive by honoring that design and embracing preventive care or what we call wellness,” she pointed out. “So let’s go and get better. Let’s all say yes to wellness.”

This pioneering holistic wellness conference and expo is co-presented by the Wellness Tourism Association of the Philippines (WETAP) in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Philippines Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC).

Twelve Years Today! A Wedding Anniversary Reflection

Twelve years ago, my husband and I got married in a beautiful garden wedding ceremony in Manila. After a year of dating and more than six months engagement, we sealed the deal. It was a joyous day!

Like any other marriage, ours was also tested with trials and misunderstandings. I can still remember the first two years were the challenging ones. We argue a lot and most of the time, on petty things. Until we agreed and learned to adjust, compromise and settle the issues. One of the things I learned in our marriage is to speak and express how I feel instead of him making guesses. I learned to be more specific of what I want and go straight to the point.

We are blessed to see each each other through seasons of disappointments, stress and even illness. To balance our busy schedule, we travel and go for an adventure. We celebrated our wedding anniversary with a lovely lunch at the modern Filipino restaurant, Casa Buenas in Newport World Resorts. It's a beautiful restaurant with modern interior design - high ceiling, elegant chandeliers and curtains, gorgeous flowers and a huge wine cellar.

We ordered some of my favorites such as the delicious pork sinigang in coconut shell and sinugba (roast chicken with fried, crispy pork skin). For appetizers, we tried the La Queso de Fonduta, melt-in-your-mouth cheese baked with fresh grapes and cherry tomatoes. It comes with superb gourmet delights - US angus beef, veggies and bread. For sweet endings, of course we had bibingka, an all time favorite Filipino delicacy and banana choco pie.

Our anniversary continues with a relaxing staycation at Savoy Hotel Manila, we got our room at less than P5,000/night. Check out the room rates here.

We also took the chance to visit the health club to relax at the sauna and steam room. It felt good afterwards, natanggal ang mga lamig ko sa katawan. Breakfast comprises of Filipino delicacies like puto, bread pudding, lomi, congee and the usual scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon.

A Short Visit in Alishan Chiayi, Taiwan

It was in early 2000 when Meteor Garden was aired in our country. I was still studying back then and would rush home just to catch the afternoon drama series. Meteor Garden was so addicting, if movie marathons are possible back then, I would!

Last November, I went to Taiwan and was able to visit Alishan for a day. Chiayi, a charming county located in Southwestern Taiwan. Although it was short but sweet trip. How I wish I did the 'Meteor Garden Sightseeing Tour then and explored some of the tourist spots of the popular Taiwan drama series in early 2000.

We took the train from Formosa Boulevard station going Zuoying station where the High Speed Train (HSR) is located. The High Speed Train station in Zuoying is quite huge. It actually looks like an airport. Since we already purchase HSR tickets in Klook, we just have to show our passports at the ticketing center.

It was freezing cold when we arrived in Alishan. There's a lot of walking inside the park so make sure to wear comfy shoes and bring jacket when you visit during the autumn and winter time. There are several tea shops where you can learn about Taiwanese tea.

There's a hotel inside the park, it would be best to stay a few days here so you can explore Alishan and nearby attractions. Don't forget to catch the old red tram and enjoy a relaxing tour inside the forest. Sadly I have to skip that activity since we need to go back to catch the last bus trip to Chiayi station.

It was a short but memorable tour in Alishan. If given the chance, I would still go back.

Yesterday, I was shocked reading the news about the passing of one of my childhood favorite actresses, Barbie Hsu, also known as Shan Cai of the famous Meteor Garden. The cause of her demise was due to influenza induced pneumonia. It broke my heart to hear this unexpected news.

Meteor Garden is one of my favorite drama series. The love-hate relationships between Barbie Hsu who played Shan Cai and Jerry Yan as Dao Ming Si was excellent. The series talks about various things including family, friendship and love-hate relationship between Shan Cai with the handsome Dao Ming Si. If I have the chance, I will definitely do the Meteor Garden Tour the next time I visit Taiwan. Perhaps will stay a couple of days in Chiayi.

My Hair Treatment Experience at Lithe Lounge

I got my glow on and ready to shine after the much-needed hair spa treatment about a week ago. Taking care of my wavy hair isn't that easy. Some days are great, some are bad, I guess it's because of the products I use. It's been five years since I started my journey to maintaining my curly/wavy hair. To do that i need to make sure that products I am using are paraben and sulfate free.

May of this year, I had my hair colored. I was happy with my brown hair but then it started to become dry and frizzy. I continue using all-natural hair conditioner and deep conditioner - these are my hair's best friend. At least it becomes manageable and always smells great but I feel my hair still lacks moisture.
