You may have caught our Article on Ali after the release of his first mixtape "February 30th." Now, we're back with the Exclusive as Ali prepares for the release of his new album entitled, "February 31st!"We recently had the chance to chat with 16-year-old Rap sensation, Ali Tomineek! You may have caught our Article on Ali after the release of his first mixtape "February 30th." Now, we're back with the Exclusive as Ali prepares for the release of his new album entitled, "February 31st!"

Ali! It's so good to have you! As you know, I'm a very big fan of yours, so I have a lot of questions for you. For starters, tell us about how you got involved in the rap game.

I remember when I was 8-years-old I would rap with my older brother and sister, just messing around. At age 13 I told my dad I wanted to be a rapper. I could see the disappointment in his eyes because he wanted me to become an engineer. But then he told me the story of Muhammad Ali and said, “make sure you are the greatest.” I spent the next two summers in my room creating music and making rap videos to post on YouTube. In a very short time with my unique rap style, and without profanity, I was able to become a YouTube sensation. With over 60,000 fans around the world I used my celebrity to raise money to buy clothes, pay rent and buy food for families around the holiday season. As Muhammad Ali used his boxing talent to draw attention to social issues in the 60’s and with Parkinson’s today, I’m currently using my poetic rapping talent to perform at each and every Boys and Girls Club throughout the Arizona valley's to send my anti-bullying message, “Bullying Stop It." My dad named me "Tomineek Ali" and as I got older I understood why. Now that I am 16, I am glad that I took the time to watch hours of videos on YouTube about Muhammad Ali. My dad always said, "If you give someone a good name they will live up to it.” Muhammad Ali has inspired me, not because of his wonderful talents that could not be matched in the ring, but because of his dedication and passion for human beings all over the world.

Wow, I didn't expect that! That's an awesome answer! You mentioned that with your personal style of rapping you don't use profanity. There are few artists out there who don't cuss in their music, but we all know that profanity has become a major part of the rap game. Did you make a conscious decision not to cuss?

I don’t think it is a conscious decision to be yourself. I enjoy a variety of styles in Hip Hop, from gangsta, country to old school. I just hope I’m lucky enough to have my music become as popular as mainstream.

Cool, I believe your music will be as popular as the mainstream artists very soon. As I said, I'm a big fan of yours and I noticed that you've done a few songs with your brother. What is it like working with him and having that family support?

It was weird because the first song we ever recorded together I was nervous and sweating, lol, but once I found my comfort level everything went smooth. My brother Shaun and I have a lot of new music coming that I think people are really going to like. As far as the rest of my family goes, everyone is very supportive. Its almost like I have my own team of label heads.

LOL! That's cool. You should always follow your dreams no matter what, but it's nice to have a solid support system backing you up. So, can you tell us a little bit about your writing process? Do you have a method?

It really depends on my mood and how I am feeling at the moment. Im always looking to expand my vocabulary so I read the dictionary and pick a word I don’t know, learn the meaning, and use it in a song.

I have to admit, when watching your videos I always wonder how you come up with your wordplay, lol. That's a very creative method and obviously an effective one. I see that you have your own style when you rap, but who are some of your musical influences?

Nothing is new on the wheel and there is a lot great music in the world. I draw my inspiration from within, but I like Pharrell Definitely, Odd Future, Mayer Hawthorn, Sufjan Stevens, Mac Miller, and Childish Gambino.

It's cool that you can draw inspiration from other artists and still keep your own style. A lot of people have a hard time with that. Now, I know you can't speak on it too much, but can you tell us a little about what we can expect from your upcoming album "February 31st?" When is it set to release?

Well without giving too much away, the album is on track to be released in September. You can Pre-order the album if you go to kickstarter.com/AliTomineek, before June 15, 2013. Everything is being produced by me. There will be a lot of fun songs, and a lot of story telling as well. I want my fans to get a glimpse at the world through my eyes with this album. I’m very excited about it!

I for one, am excited! I can't wait to pick up a copy! You seem like a very confident guy, do you ever have problems with haters or people leaving negative comments on your videos? How do you deal with things like that?

I’m actually touring high schools and boys and girls clubs in my State promoting my anti-bullying message. So I welcome negative comments it is part of the path of success. I know everybody is not always going to have something positive to say, but it won’t stop me from reaching my goals nor will I EVER hurt myself over Haters’ comments.

That's what I like to hear! And it's great that you're getting involved with the youth, we need more of that. So, what advice would you give to one of those kids if they wanted to pursue music, or any other craft that they're passionate about?

Make sure you’re happy with whatever it is that you choose. If it begins to feel like work and not fun, its probably not the right path. Also, strive to be the best at what you do. Never stop practicing your craft.

Another great answer! What plans do you have for the future? Will you always rap, or would you like to branch out to other aspects of the music industry?

I would actually like to branch out into acting. One of the best examples I can give is Will Smith. He was once called corny, but now he demands $25 million a movie and if that’s considered corny, sign me up! Haha.

Sign me up too! There's nothing corny about pulling $25 million per movie, lol. It's been great talking to you Ali, I just have one more question for your. What has been your biggest moment thus far?

I would say hitting close to 10 million total upload views on Youtube is a pretty big moment for me. But everyday I wake up and I am able to do what I love without boundaries is truly my biggest accomplishment.

Thank you so much for speaking with me Ali and you're welcome here anytime! I believe we're gonna see great things from you in the near future!

Check out the videos below and remember to pick up a copy of "February 31st" when it drops!

Click here to subscribe to Ali's Youtube channel! At age 14, Levi is not only an accomplished singer, but also a young Humanitarian. Volunteering not only in his church, but in his community. With his desire to give back, and his remarkable musical talent, Levi is exactly the kind of role model that we need in society today. So without further adieu, please check out this One-On-1 Exclusive Interview with Levi Mitchell!

Levi! It’s so great to have you! Thank you for speaking with me.
No problem, I am honored to be here.

Great! So let’s get into it. For starters, what inspired you to pursue music?
I was inspired to pursue music once I realized that I always wanted to listen to music non stop, and when I picked up an instrument and found that I could play it easily. One of the most revealing moments was when I would write songs about everything. I write songs about food, and whatever I see; I write funny songs and songs that will make you cry. I got a standing ovation at the age of 3 and never stopped singing.

Wow! A standing ovation at only 3-years-old? That’s amazing! And it’s great to have that kind of support, especially at such a young age. Who do you consider to be your strongest support system?
Friends and family always give me the best support. Some of the best ways they support me is through motivation and song ideas.

That’s cool, it’s great to have those closest to you so involved in something that you’re passionate about. Almost all teenaged male singers are compared to Justin Bieber, which I think is a very cool comparison, but how do you feel about it?
He is very successful, so if people want to compare my journey with success than that's okay. It can be difficult to break away from the shadow, at times, of such a successful teen and have your own path. But, it seems as though my music speaks for itself and is unique enough to have Levi fans.

That’s an awesome answer, and a great way to look at things. So, who are some of your biggest influences in music and in life as well?
Music on Guitar? John Mayer; Music on Piano? My Mother.
Overall I relate to so many styles and Artists that inspire me, it's tough to give credit to one person or group. In life, Jesus is my biggest influence.

It’s funny that you say that, because my next question was do you believe in God? Even though you’ve already answered, I have to officially ask, Do you believe in God?
Absolutely.

Awesome! So let’s get off of the music for a sec! I’d like to ask a few questions about society, if that’s cool. What changes would you like to see over the next 20 years?
Over the next twenty years I would like to see society be disciplined and take responsibility for it's actions concerning the environment, the generation of youth, and the respect of others.

Great answer, and with the right attitude we can make it happen. Now, as far as your music goes you have a lot of young fans who look up to you, do you consider yourself a role model? And, if so, what example would you like to set?
It is humbling to be considered a 'Role Model' and I think that some fans do see me that way. It can be a lot of pressure but, it's the greatest feeling to know that you have done something right and people want to imitate that.

Yes, it’s also something to be very mindful of. I can only imagine how much pressure being a role model can cause. You got your fan base mostly from posting videos online, and we all know how many critics are trolling Youtube. Have you had any problems with haters? How do you stay positive?
Every Youtube user has haters. If it is something you want to do take the haters comments as motivation to prove them wrong. Staying positive is easy especially when you have something to look forward to. i look forward to sleep.

Lol! Me too! So, how does it feel to go from posting your very first video, to having a fairly large fan base in such a short period of time? How do you keep yourself grounded?
It feels amazing because people are finally starting to see what I do and take notice. I don't feel that it has been only a short amount of time since I have been performing practically my whole life but, as far as the internet is concerned I have gotten a lot of fans quickly. I keep myself grounded by having friends that keep it 100, and will tell me about myself.

That’s always good to have, you need people who aren’t afraid to be honest with you. It keeps you humble and you tend to work harder. As you know, LivingTru.com only features clean music with positive lyrics. In your opinion, why is it important to keep your music clean?
If you listen to the current music it is not really uplifting, creating positive music helps make the world a better place.

Agreed! Thanks so much for speaking with me Levi, I just have one more question for you. What is your ultimate goal for your music?
My ultimate goal for my music is for it to be heard all around the world, and help to change lives.

And there you have it folks! How long have you been singing and what inspired you to start?
I have been singing for as long as I can remember. I am only thirteen, but I enjoy listening to different types of music.

Does your family support your decision?
My family are very supportive in every way possible. Of course they give me guidance regarding my decisions.

As with us all, there has got to be someone who has influenced you. Who are some of your biggest influences in life and in music?
My biggest influences in my life are my parents who give me great guidance and encouragement. In music, I would say Michael Jackson and Beyonce. I love their commitment, hard work, determination and I love their style of music.

Yes! M. J. and Beyonce are just two of my favorite performers as well. They are two legends past and present. Now, on a spiritual note, do you believe in God? If so, what role does he play in your life and your music as well?
Yes I do believe in God and go to church every week . God plays a very important role within my life as I realize that It is God who has blessed me with a very special gift to sing, and I thank Him for allowing me to use my voice to bless others.

It’s cool to understand, if not realize, that God is definitely omnipresent and instrumental in everything. At least that’s what I believe. Lol. Now, tell me, whet is your favorite genre of music - who are some your favorite Artists?
I love listening to all different types of genre's, but I would say my favorite’s are R&B, Soul, Pop and Gospel. My favorite artists are Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Usher, Justin Bieber, Jessie J and Chris Brown.

You can definitely hear the different influences when you sing. It’s awesome. And to admire such an assortment of heavy hitters can do nothing but insure your success. Lol. What advice would you give to another person wishing to pursue a career in music.
I would say, follow after your dream and with hard work and determination you can accomplish anything. And, make sure you have fun and enjoy what you do!

Photos taken by Dez Mighty.

That’s a very encouraging answer for others. It’s good that you can give positive feedback to people like you trying to pursue a dream. This industry can be tough but social media has helped to open the playing field, and that’s a good thing! Lol. What has been your biggest moment thus far? What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I was the first person EVER to perform on the London Olympic Stage platform in the Olympic Stadium. Although it was not at the Olympic Games, I performed in front of ten thousand people! I also had the privilege to sing at an event in front of former President Bill Clinton, daughter, Chelsea Clinton, Princess Beatrice, and Will-I-am. I managed to get photos with them all at an event that Bill was hosting in London. That was amazing!!

Wow, that is amazing! I can only hope to be in front of such dignitaries some day. Lol! No, but seriously, those are some very memorable events for you and I hope there’s more for you in the near future. With that said, do you have any new and exciting projects coming up?
Yes. At the moment I am having studio sessions where I am recording some original material that I love and cannot wait to release!
So, that’s why its been hard for me to track you down! But Livingtru.com has finally caught up with Poetic Lace, a.k.a. Le'Serone Smith. Let's get right into it. Now tell me, how did you get your start in music, and what inspired you?

"It all started with me writing poetry to relieve stress. I've been through a LOT of ups and downs in my life, and writing poetry is how I coped with it. I had played basketball for awhile, but quit. Then I transferred to Florida International University in Miami. After this transition, at one point I became homeless. I got sick with hives and my banking account was "mysteriously" emptied out. I felt very much alone, but God was always there for me. When he brought me out of that situation, He told me that I have work to do, and that music was a part of my purpose. However, I never took my gift of writing seriously until I'd quit playing basketball. Needless to say, several months later here I am composing songs (my first project was sponsored by La Vida Clary Mason/Mijoi and Associates LLC), that I consider to have a positive influence and glorifies God. Lol. What truly inspired me was not just what God had done for me, but what he can do for others. There is so much negativity in the world - I feel it's time for something positive. I met a lot of people who didn't know they have a heavenly Father who loves them."

There are a lot of people hurting out there. It's good to know you still believe there is a God even through adversity. Obviously you believe in God, so what role does he play in your life?
"God is my everything! Smile. Without Him I am nothing. He's my Best Friend, Father, God, Creator...everything. That pretty much sums it up. Lol. Oh yea, I am saved through the blood of Jesus Christ!"

Lol. Thanks for that no-holds-barred answer! Now, can you tell us who some of your biggest influences are?
"My biggest influence is Jesus Christ. He is the definition of keeping it real! He spoke his mind, He was loyal, He wasn't afraid to be Himself, He went out his way to help people, and He died for what He believed in! My family also plays a huge role in my life, and I am not just talking about blood relatives. I have a host of church family who influence me as well. As far as musical influences go; I would be lying if I said Tupac Shakur didn't play a major role. His music meant a lot to me growing up. I have a lot of respect for his passion, he fought for what he believed in. Oh, I am also a Lecrae fan!"

I love it! I'm a Lacrae fan too, lol! What is positive energy to you, and how do you utilize it?
"Positive energy to me...(laughing). It's hard to explain in words. God has done a lot in my life. Just the thought of that moves me to excitement! Having a pen and a pad in front of me, people laughing and smiling, and the Holy Spirit in the atmosphere...That's amazing! I know it sounds crazy, but I'm the type of person that instead of complaining about something, I will just go fix it. So the more souls that need help, the harder I have to work to do my part. "

What projects are you working on?
On March 23rd I released my debut project, "When Silence Falls" and it is available for purchase on iTunes and free download at datpiff.com. This project takes you on a journey from the perspective of a far from perfect person. All of my flaws, mistakes, ups and downs will be exposed as we travel through righteousness. Everything is one hundred percent original and Holy Spirit given! I am also working on several music videos. Be sure to see the "Broken Wings" extended version.

Sounds good. You are obviously a very busy man! Lol. Can you tell me what changes you'd like to see in our society?
"Truth be told, the Bible says its going to get worse before the return of Christ, but I would love to see us unite as a people. I'm talking about all people, no division of color, just everyone coming together as one through the blood of Jesus Christ."

That would be awesome. Folks just being who they are and not trippin' off race. Lol!
How do you feel about the entertainment industry as a whole, do you think more people should get involved in sending positive messages?
"I apologize in advance if I offend anyone, but the entertainment industry is full of bull. How is it cool to market evil? Because of what we see and hear, young ladies (not all) feel like they have to lay down and spread their legs to get somebody to love them. Young men (not all) feel like they are nothing without money. Drugs and murder are what I hear most on the radio in my community. There are some strong influential artists/actors/entertainers out there, but they get put through hell. Either they get no support or the media bashes them. So, yes I do feel more people should get involved sending positive messages. But if they don't, its cool, I'll hold it down (winks)."

Tell us how you really feel! Lol. Honesty's cool. What advice would you give to someone interested in entertainment, or any other field of their choice?
"My advice is: if God put a desire in your heart, then go after it with everything you have. There will be times when you won't see the light, but you have to believe. Regardless of what you are pursuing you will encounter trials and tribulations. What doesn't break you helps make you. So stay focused and stick to your guns."

What keeps you motivated and grounded?
"Reading my Bible and prayer helps A LOT. Looking at what others before me have gone through, and how they overcame it puts me in a "who are you" mind frame. Who are you if you haven't been through anything? Who are you that everything should be easy? Jesus' own people turned Him in to be crucified. Who are you? I'm Gods' child. That's what motivates me."

I pray everyday! I can't live without it, and that's real. Lol! Tell me what messages you want to transcend to others through your music?
"The message from me is...Just come to God. You don't have to be perfect, rich, cool, attractive, a certain ethnicity, or anything. God knows all about our imperfections, but it doesn't stop Him from loving us.

And lastly, if you had the opportunity to do something really profound, what would it be?
"To get in a position where I am able to feed the hungry, clothe and provide shelter for the homeless. And, most importantly, get people to go to God by way of Jesus Christ."

Wow, that's cool. I love hearing that you believe in Jesus Christ. I think it is way cool when I hear Justin Beiber telling his fans the same thing! Well, I'm down for Jesus Christ! Thank you Poetic Lace. Your interview was very insightful! We'll be following you!
"Thank you once again for this opportunity. I enjoyed speaking with www.LivingTru.com. Have a blessed day!"

Be sure to connect with Poetic Lace on all of his social networks!
Facebook
Twitter
Youtube

Check out the new video for "Broken Wings" by Poetic Lace Ft. It's been a long time coming, but I have Hip-Hop Artist E-Hos here at LivingTru.com! Hailing from West Philly and no stranger to the music game, E-Hos is currently working on a new EP and has recently released a new music video for a hot track entitled "Underestimated." You guys are definitely in for a treat! You know what to do! Hit that "Read More" button to check out my One-On-1 interview with E-Hos!

Thank you so much for speaking with me E-Hos! I'm so excited to have you here finally! Lol.
Thank you very much for having me. I’m the one that should be thankful haha, but really it’s my pleasure.

No problem at all! So let's get to it! Tell me how you got started in music, and what inspired your decision to pursue it.
To be honest, like many, I’ve had an interest in music since I was born. My mother’s constant playing of all types of music was definitely my biggest inspiration to do music. I started doing music way back in like 3rd grade. I was playing the viola and singing in the choir. I took interest in Hip-Hop about a year or two later after seeing my first Rap video. Funny story, I was assigned a project by my 5th grade Science teacher to write a poem or some sort of creative presentation about vascular plants. I thought, this is my big break, so I broke out the boombox with a built-in microphone to record, a blank cassette tape, and my mom’s CD player where I was able to play an instrumental CD. I then recorded my very first Rap song about vascular plants. I still think I have the recorded song lying somewhere around my house. Someone’s gonna find it and use it to blackmail my career one day haha.

Haha, I hope so! I personally would love to hear that, lol. So, your mom was obviously very influential in your decision to pursue this business... who are some of your other influences as far as music and life as well?
Aside from my family, I would say that Will Smith is probably one of my biggest inspirations and influences me the most. Being that we’re both from the West Philadelphia area and his style is so authentic and gracious. Dude is undeniable from the big screen to the music studio. I have mad love for Will Smith, and I would definitely love to meet him one day. Even if I couldn’t get a business opportunity from him, I would just love to sit down and have a conversation with him. His philosophies on life are just so inspiring and empowering.

Agreed. He's very eloquent and intelligent, and definitely a good example for the younger generation. Not to mention that all of his music was profanity free, and age appropriate for all, something that doesn't really apply to a lot of today's music. Speaking of which, how do you feel about the current state of the music industry?
I believe the current state of the music industry has so much potential. Unfortunately, many artists are stuck trying to find themselves so they end up being something they’re not. It’s very sad because creativity in everything from subject matter, beat selection and even inflections in voices are becoming very mundane. Almost every new artist sounds like the other new artist that came out last week. Everybody’s afraid to take that leap.

That's so true, and it's a shame because there really is so much potential in today's artists. Creativity and story-telling is what makes music fun and it allows the listener to relate to the artist by knowing their story. Fortunately for me, I did find that in your music. I absolutely love your new song "Underestimated" I feel like I got to know you a little better through that. So, what exactly do you want your music to do for others?
I want people to jump around. I want people to cry. I want people to laugh. I want people to hate it. And I want people to do those same exact things 20-30 years from now. I want to get people through their deepest and darkest times in life, as well as get them through rush hour traffic on a Friday, haha.

Haha! I think it does and it will in the future. While we're talking about it, what upcoming projects are you working on right now?
Right now, I’m currently working on an EP album with Patrick Donovan, one of the best singers I’ve ever heard. I’m also working on a new solo album produced by one of the best producers in the Philadelphia area, AO. Both projects will be very innovative musically. I plan to utilize instruments that most hip-hop artists seem to neglect.

Dope! I can't wait! I actually interviewed Patrick Donovan a couple months back, I love his voice as well. Now, I imagine that you're starting to get a lot of recognition for your music, and we all know what comes with the territory. Lots of fans, haters, tons of new people in your life. How do you keep yourself grounded?
Family. Friends are included in that term “family” to me. But that’s it, family. Also, the simple fact that anything that you are given in life can be snatched away twice as fast.

Very true, so I take it you either believe in karma, or you have some kind of religious background. Do you believe in God?
Firm believer in God…I believe God lives through my family, therefore God is a primary factor and motivator for me to strive in any and everything that I do.

Awesome! Let's get off the music for a minute, I always like to ask questions about the current state of things in our society and how we as role models can make a difference. So throughout your lifetime what changes do you hope to see?
The overall decline in hatred. Also an increase in individuality. I want to see people in society treat each other more genuine. The honor and integrity system is almost extinct in this day and age.

I totally agree with that! That's a big change, and it's one that every individual will have choose to make. If you had the power to make big changes in society, what would you do to produce a positive change?
Give every active unemployed struggling individual a job, pay the loans for every student who was succeeding academically in college but was released because they could no longer afford to pay tuition, thus, leaving them with no degree and outstanding loans. Of course world peace and good health tops my list as well, but I’m sure that’s on a lot of people’s lists.

That would be dope lol! I think you're right, a lot of people would do the same things. And we definitely need to get it together in terms of education. So, as you know LivingTru is all about the power of positive energy. What is positive energy to you?
To me, positive energy is the ability to always keep focus on the optimistic aspects of life, living life to the fullest, and always smiling. Another important aspect of positive energy is knowing how to keep your pride in check and understanding that pride belongs at your side, not leading you. I utilize positive energy by trying to have a positive impact on any and everyone that I come across in life. Helping an older woman with her bags may mean nothing to me, but could touch her positively for a long time to come. One positive act by me could change her entire outlook on young men in general, and that means a lot.

That's awesome and definitely the best answer I've heard to that question! I've really enjoyed speaking with you, and I'm not going to keep you much longer. I just have one more question. What advice would you give to someone trying to make it in the music industry, or any other field of their choice?
I would tell any artist to stay true and persistent: Take the proper time to improve your craft on a daily basis: Take twice as much time promoting yourself: Believe in whatever you’re doing, and utilize all of the technology and outlets that are available today. Anybody can be heard, so make what you have to say count.

Once again, I totally agree! Thank you so much for speaking with me E-Hos, this has been a very inspirational interview and I know people will be able to take a lot from it!
Thank you very much for having me…it has been my pleasure. Please continue doing what you’re doing with this blog. It’s a wonderful thing, seriously.

Thanks so much! Check out the video for "Let It Go" featuring Patrick Donovan! And don't forget to connect with E-Hos on all of his social networks!

Twitter
Facebook
Youtube

It’s been a long time coming, but I have a treat in store for you all! This edition of One-on-1 features Rap sensation and Youtube phenomenon, P. Sanders! At only 16-years-old, he’s already taken the Rap game by storm! With thousands of fans and being the cause of what is now referred to as “Sanders Syndrome,” there’s no question in my mind that this young man is going to go far in the music game! Click the link to check out my interview with P. Sanders!

P. Sanders!!!! What’s good! Thank you so much for speaking with me! LivingTru is so excited to have you!
Thanks for having me! I'm happy I could be a part of this.

Me too! So let’s get to it! First off, I have to say that your fans go hard for you! A girl named Riley (@Mahomie_4Ever) suggested that I check out your music, and I’m glad that I did! Thanks for the tip Riley! P, can you give her a shoutout?
Riley thanks so much for spreading the "Sanders Syndrome" and being such a great fan. Your a true Psanderette. Keep shining, and much love to you!

Cool! Thanks again Riley! So my first question is an obvious one, how long have you been rapping and what inspired you to start?
Well I've only been rapping for about eight months now. I started because some people around my school would always rap at football games and other places and I just felt like I could do it too. Plus, I have always loved music and since I couldn't sing very well I just picked up rapping. It's what drives me to the feeling of having success.

Wow, so you’re fairly new to the rap game. You’re really good! Especially for somebody that’s just starting out! So you’ve become popular really fast, how does it feel to have fans? Did you think that it would happen this quickly?
The fans are what I look forward to everyday! Just reading all their messages and getting fan mail is enough to make me feel like the most loved kid on the planet. It's amazing how much support I have been getting lately and I never thought it would happen this fast! It was within a matter of weeks that I had a thousand followers, and it's been growing uncontrollably ever since. It's a rage that my fans describe as “Sanders Syndrome.”

Lol! Well, it certainly seems like an epidemic! I know if you keep at it you’ll go far! So, do you want to pursue music on a professional level? What are your dreams for your career?
Of course I do! It would be just plain stupid if I stopped as an internet Rapper. I have bigger dreams than most people can really understand and throughout all the obstacles and turns that the future has to hold, I'm never giving up. My biggest plans for my career are to win a Grammy, tour all over the world, receive the highest honors for an album, and of course star in a movie. It doesn't have to be about my life, but I've always wanted to be in one.

It’ll happen! I know it will. You have a strong support system with your fans and I know that they’ll push you towards you goals. While we’re on the subject, does your family support you with your music, and every other aspect of your life?
Yes, my family supports me 120 percent through everything I do. My mom even got a twitter (@Saucy_Mama) and my grandma too (@Grans_Loves) just to talk to all my fans as supporting figures. I'm extremely blessed to have such a loving family, it's sort of unreal how much they care.

Wow, you’re Grandma has a Twitter? That’s so cool! Lol, Guys make sure you follow them! So P, even though you just recently started rapping, you obviously chose that kind of music for a reason. Is Hip Hop your favorite genre? Who are some of your favorite Artists?
Hip-Hop has always been a part of me, the very first rap song I ever heard was by Jay-Z, he has always been my role model. Eminem influences my music as well, he is one of the greatest out there. Drake, Kanye West, and J-Cole are big inspirations to me also. They make me want to do greater things and be better everyday.

Cool, we all need somebody to look up to especially when trying to pursue our dreams. You have a lot of people that look up to you, so what advice would you give to another kid wishing to pursue a career in music?
Never give up. That's what I tell everyone...Never give up! If you let the haters and the problems get in the way of who you are and what you want to do, there is no hope for your career at all. You have to constantly work to be better than the day before and improve your skills in every aspect. Shoot for the stars cause there is nothing higher that could ever stop you. Be you, and never change, cause chances are people will love you for who you already are.

Very wise words my man. So off the music for a minute, I always ask this question because I know how important it is to me. Do you believe in God? What role does he play in your life and in your music?
Of course I believe in God. He has been the main fuel supply to the fire that has ignited. In other words, now that he has got me started there is no stopping this legacy that is literally building right in front me. I've always given him credit, cause without God where would I be?

So true! None of us would be anywhere without God! I know that can be considered a personal question, so thanks for answering. Alright, back to the music, what do your fans have to look forward to? Do you have any new and exciting projects coming up?
I will be on a TV show for VH1 called H.O.T. (Hip-Hops Outstanding Talent) and it airs sometime this year. I also will be opening for Mac Miller this summer in Chattanooga Tennessee. There will be tons of new videos uploaded to my Youtube channel and some surprises coming up as well. Maybe a few commercials or something along those lines. Stay Tuned.

Wow! Congrats! Tv shows, opening for Mac Miller, commercials? You’re doing it big! Good luck with everything! I see you’re a busy man so I won’t keep you any longer lol, I just have one more question. What is your greatest ambition?
To be loved by the world, and inspire people everyday to be the best they can be. At only 17 years old, Tyler is already making his mark on today's music industry. Currently residing in Nashville Tennessee, Tyler has had the opportunity to work with some really big names in the industry and there's no doubt in our minds that he'll go far! You know what to do, click "Read More" to check out a very inspirational interview with Singer/Songwriter Tyler Matl!

Tyler! I'm so excited to have you! Thank you so much for speaking with me!
Thank you so much for having me! I really appreciate it, and I cannot wait to began!

Usually I start the interview with a question about music, but i'm going to switch it up a little bit this time. I know the answer to this already, but I really liked how you answered it and how personal you made it. So the first question is, Do you believe in GOD?
"I believe in God, and that everything happens for a reason. When I was younger I went through alot that I don't feel most kids or people in general should go through. My biological father passed away when I was five, I was diagnosed with Tourettes Syndrome, which you wouldn't notice by talking to me, because I have been very blessed due to an old seizure medication I use which hides it, and I was teased a lot in school. It's been my faith in God that got me through those times, and shaped me into the person I am today! I actually started out singing with a youth group at my church. I grew a lot in my relationship with God through that opportunity and learned a lot more about how important music is to me. I personally feel and believe that I am meant to be in the music business but I don't worry about when my career will launch or take off. I have already put that in God's hands because that is for him to know and decide when I am ready, not me.

I know that can be considered a personal question, so thanks so much for being open and personal with the answer. You're awesome Tyler! (Lol) Now, let's jump into the music related questions! I've gotten a glimpse of your work ethic just from following you on your social networks. You work really hard to get your music out there, and I've noticed that you always reach out to your fans. So music is obviously something that you're really serious about pursuing, where does that passion come from?
Music is what I really love doing and is always how I have expressed myself. It's something I'm blessed with and comes easy to me, but now that I am trying to be successful as a Recording Artist I have to work very hard each day. When I was younger, I picked up music really easily. I was five and I could hear a song one time and remember every single lyric. I also hear music in my head, and when I was younger, before I played any instruments, I wanted to make what I heard come to life. Eventually I got a keyboard from my grandmother. Then I was able to make the sounds I heard actually happen and I started playing by ear. I also picked up the drums and guitar by ear. I've been songwriting since I was twelve. I'm really blessed to live in Nashville where I have the opportunity to pursue music because of all the other contacts, organizations, and the great history of music that Nashville has to offer.

That's awesome! I'm sure a lot of musicians would love to live in Nashville, the opportunities are endless in a musical city like that. You mentioned songwriting and I know that you write a lot of your own music, would you ever, or have you ever worked with other writers?
I write a lot of my own music, however, I have been really fortunate to write with some amazing writers who have already had songs cut by other well known artists, or have had songs on the Billboard Charts. I have even wrote with Grammy nominated writers and they all have something great to teach me that I didn't know before! I use my personal experiences and the things I go through that maybe others can relate to or might share a similar experience to write a song. Most often when I write, the idea comes from something I felt about someone or wanted to say to them in a certain moment but passed on it. I never rush a song when I write it. If I start a song but during the first verse or halfway into the chorus I loose interest or feel like it has changed direction from where I was intending it to go, then I will stop and come back to it later. When I am writing I try to write as if I was more than one person. What I mean by this is, I write from as many point of views as possible so that I am not just writing a song that only I will relate to. I want my music to be relatable by as many people as possible. I think it is great when a song is able to move you emotionally.

I totally agree. I think that's one of the major components missing in music these days, they kind of lack a sense of feel. Speaking of which, how do you feel about the current state of music?
I think that music changes with every generation and that not everyone likes change, however it's something we should learn to appreciate. There are alot of really exciting things that can be done to songs with technology these days, in the recording studio, that couldn't be done in the 70's and 80's. As long as we don't overuse it, I think it can make music great for everyone! I do however think that it has changed in ways that are depriving listeners of what they would get in past times. Nowdays there is still talent, but everything is very identical sounding. Where as in the 70's or 80's people were always exploring new things with music. I sometimes wish that artists would try to break out of their shells and do something that is not already going on. Music is always changing and always will be so I am curious to see what "music" will be when I have children.

I expect it will be a lot different from what it is now lol. That's the great thing about music, it's timeless and forever changing. So, who would you say are some of your biggest musical influences?
I definitely look up to Taylor Swift, which is for a few reasons. Since I live in the same area that she lived in when she made it, it makes me work that much harder to succeed because I hear a lot about how she made it and what she did to get there, so I already have a set of footsteps I can follow behind. The other thing that gives me a lot of respect for her is that she is a celebrity, but she doesn't make it a big deal. I had the chance to be an extra in her music video You Belong With Me, and I met her afterwards at a local shop and she was really nice and sincere with me. If I make it as an artist I want to be the same way towards others around me and always be thankful for what I would be lucky enough to do. It's actually kind of funny that I look at Taylor as an inspiration because I am always compared with Taylor Swift or told that I'm the male version of Taylor Swift. I completely take it as a compliment when someone tells me that because she has earned a lot of respect and has accomplished more than most artist do in a lifetime and she is only twenty-one. Also she is very much like the "girl next door" and has a good image to her so if I am seen with a good image too, than I think I'm doing something right.

That's a really awesome answer! I'm a fan of Taylor Swift as well, and I've always noticed how real she seems when she's being interviewed. I think that's so cool, because being a celebrity tends to go to some people's heads. I think highly of anyone who can keep that balance. So Taylor, like you said is an inspiration to you especially in terms of her career. As far as your career goes, what is your greatest ambition?
To make it as a Recording artist and to gain respect for what I love to do. I want to be successful, but do things for other people whenever I can and however I can. I mentioned that God does everything for a reason, and I think that all the experiences I've been through were so that if I make it, I will be thankful for what I get, and understand that there are others out there with way less and more who have nothing at all. I know that I have what it takes to make it, but I also want to be different. I don't want to do whats already been done. I want my music to show a sense of honesty and realism for what I feel and I don't just want to be another guy singing about money, fame, and sex. I think there needs to be a male singer who isn't afraid to show emotions and be sensitive , because you never hear anything about true love anymore on the radio, it's mostly one night stands and songs about "I want to take you home and have a good time". It would be good for both men and women to hear a different point of view coming from someone of youth.

And THAT my friend, is exactly what "LivingTru" is! Artist who are willing to step up to the plate and be a good role model, because they're going to be labeled as one anyway. I haven't heard too many artists your age say that. I think it's great! Not to mention, that answer kind of leads up to my next question. What changes would you like to see take place as far as music and any other aspect of society over the next 30 years?
I hope that in thirty years people will be more accepting to Country music. It's a lot more accepted than it used to be, but I think it still has a way to go. If I could be a country artist that crosses over into pop music as well, I would love to have the opportunity to do that. I think that artists like Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, and The Band Perry who have had songs played on both pop and country stations and can be categorized as either country or pop have helped to bring a lot more of a new younger audience into Country music and have helped make country music more modern to what today's pop music is. I would also love to see a revival in the church. There is so much desensitization that has taken place thanks to the media that the shock factor of seeing murder on tv, nudity in movies, hearing God's name in vain, and drug activity doesn't exist anymore. It has gone from abnormal to accepted as normal to see those things around us and I hope that it changes.

I have to say that that is one of the best answers I've ever gotten for that question. I couldn't agree with you more! We touched on this one a little bit already, so it would be great if you could just elaborate a little bit. What kind of role model do you want to be for kids?
I want to be seen as a strong individual who always is confident in his ability to do the right thing even if others won't be accepting and to be recognized as a man of God. I want to drive people to overcome any struggles they are facing,or to stand up to any problems they have in their life. I want to take all the experiences I have learned from in my life and be an example of what it's like to overcome even the hardest difficulty you are facing. I also am really open about my faith and personally feel as though everything has happened to me to shape me into who God plans me to become. So since I have been through experiences like having tourettes, my biological father passed when I was five, or being bullied, and living in Nashville, where I see a lot of people who are homeless and less fortunate my eyes are opened to things like, "I want to help those people if I ever make it", or "I want to have a story to share that other people who lost a parent will be able to relate to" and I also want to create organizations for people who are bullied and for people with tourettes.

These answers keep getting better and better! I won't keep you too much longer, I only have a couple more questions for you. In your opinion, why is it so important to go for your dreams while you're still young?
I believe that if you have a dream and there is something that you love, than you should go after it. I would rather have the opportunity to be in a career I actually enjoy doing everyday instead of one I don't like but I have to do to pay the bills. Life is too short to not do what you really enjoy. I am thankful that I have been able to have the opportunity to pursue my dream and that I have such a supportive family who believes in me.

Awesome! I just want to say that I've enjoyed speaking to you very much Tyler, you're truly an inspiration and a very nice young man. I know you're going to make it far! So let's close out this interview with this, what has been your biggest moment thus far?
I would say that my biggest moment thus far has actually been having the opportunity to live in Nashville, TN where I am so blessed to have met alot of great people who believe in me and want to help me succeed. I have been able to write with some amazing songwriters who have already had songs cut by other artists or have had songs on the billboard charts. The fact that in one year of being in Nashville pursuing music as much as possible without a record label I was able to grow my fan base over 30,000 people online and that people start to come hear me perform means a lot to me. Ultimately just knowing that I have my foot in the door, and it is a matter of time before the rest of things fall into place, and the door is flung wide open is my biggest moment thus far!

And there you have it folks! At only 16-years-old, Dylan has already made a name for himself as an internet celebrity, and has established quite a fan base. He sings, he raps, he plays the guitar and he's also a Humanitarian. "Read More" to check out my interview with Dylan Holland!
Dylan! I can't tell you how excited I am to have you! It's great to meet you, thanks for coming through!
Yeah! I’m really excited to talk to you! Very good to meet you!

My man! So as you know, this is my first "Fan Edition" of ONe-On-1 and I have to tell you, your fans campaigned hard for you! I've got to give a special shoutout to Cierra Gannen for sending me your youtube link. I'm so glad I checked out your music, because you're just as awesome as she told me you were! So of course it‘s only fair to include them in this, I have a couple of questions from your fans at the end of this interview! So for starters, what are you working on right now? Do you have an album in the works?
Yes! I am working on an album! Its called “In The Dark” and its a 6 song album including “I call you love” & “What I dream of." I’m really excited! Its going to have a little bit of Country, Hip-Hop, R&B and pop. I don't have a release date set though, it all takes time :)

Cool! Be on the lookout for that everybody! I’m sure It’ll be really good, I love eclectic albums! It keeps you interested! So, I assume that your life can get a bit crazy, how do you balance everything out? I mean with school, recreation and music you must not have a lot of time?
That’s actually one of the hardest things to do. I absolutely LOVE hanging out with people on weekends. It's always been a favorite, I mean who doesn't right? I’m also big on baseball and I have a game every day of the week until May, so that's really hard too. I would love to have a career in music more than anything. So, on some weekends I sacrifice the times that I have with my friends to either write or produce music or talk to my fans. I really do give up a lot and that's hard, but its worth it if it means making all of these people happy. I guess I’m just afraid of missing out on big childhood things while I’m still a normal kid.

Yeah, I understand that. I’m sure it’s tough, but It’s totally worth it right? A lot of kids would love to have a huge following like you. In your opinion, at what point can you sit back and say “I’ve made it”. Is it having fans? Selling out concerts? At what point would you consider yourself to be successful?
Well, I mean, I already consider myself successful because everyday I get to make someone happy. Everyday that I do that makes me feel more successful. Hearing how happy someone gets when I surprise them with a phone call, or a skype call makes my week!

That’s awesome! I have to admit, I didn’t expect that answer lol. I thought you would say success was getting rich or famous, you’re a humble kid I like that. So, how do you feel about how fast you became popular and how did you market yourself?
Hmmmm....Well I think that it’s pretty amazing! I never would of thought in a million years that I would have so many people looking up to me. It makes me feel like an important person! And I would never ask for more. My good friend Brandon Utley helped me a lot with my marketing. He sent my music to iTunes and around the world basically. He's a great friend.

I’ll say! He obviously sees your potential. It’s always nice to have close friends and family that support you. Now as far as life and music go, who are some of your biggest influences?
I would have to say two of my biggest influences are Garth Brooks and my Dad. The reason being because when I was just a little baby, or toddler...which ever, my dad would always play guitar and sing for me. Most of the time it was Garth Brooks. I’m not a huge fan of country music, but Garth is one of the most talented artists I have ever heard in my life. I am also inspired by Michael Jackson, Brian Mcknight, Boyz II Men, 2pac, Eminem, Justin Bieber, and Blessed Union Of Souls.

It’s cool that you like so many different genres, and that your Dad is a big influence in your life. I imagine you can get a bit carried away sometimes when you have fans at a young age... so you need someone to deflate your head a little bit if you get to that point, lol! Speaking of that, what keeps you grounded?
I think its more of who, haha! My mom and Dad for sure are a big part in that. They're always on me about picking up after myself and cleaning my room. Honestly, I am very messy, lol! I have a hard time remembering things too which is always a problem. My really good friends keep me grounded as well. They tell me when I start to get a big head or a little too full of myself. I love them.

Haha! You have to have that solid foundation, we all get big-headed sometimes. So Dylan, I noticed in one of your videos that you were talking about an Animal Foundation I believe? I hear you are involved in a lot of charities, if so, Which ones are you a part of?
Well at the moment I have a group on twitter called The Deezy Army, and what they do is for every follower that they get, they donate I think either one dollar or fifty cents to the ASPCA, which is an animal cruelty awareness charity that I think is amazing. I love animals and helping people so I would work with pretty much anything that came my way.

Awesome! Shout out to Deezy Army! Everybody follow them on Twitter (@DeezyArmy), they contacted me about you as well Dylan! Let’s talk about some of today’s issues. Personally, I think there are a lot of areas in our society that need work. What changes would you like to see take place in society over your lifetime?
The main thing I would like to see changed is the way people treat each other. I know exactly what it's like to be treated like dirt. A lot of people are surprised when I tell them that, at my school, I’m not some popular singer on the internet, that I’m just a regular kid with a handful of books and shaggy hair. I’m treated just like everyone else in public school is treated. A lot of my friends DO call me Deezy though. Haha :)

Haha! Well “Deezy” I definitely agree with you on that! Changing the way we treat each other, alone, can move mountains. So, being that you‘re so involved and active in your community, I guess it would be important to you to treat others well... Do you think it‘s important for all young people to get involved in their community?
It’s so important! More than people realize. When you do something for your community, It not only shows how much you care, but how responsible you are to take up for the place where you live.

Very “Tru” Dylan, I had to use the play on words here, lol. Alright, this is my last question for you and then we’ll get into some of your fans questions. Do you believe in God?
YES! I do believe in God. I used to go to church every Sunday for about a year and then I got really big into my music and baseball and that slowly faded. I pray every night before I go to sleep. HE really is great. If HE's not in your life, you should invite him.

Beautiful! You’re absolutely right! So Dylan, I got A LOT of questions from your fans, but of course I couldn’t use them all. I had to go with the most frequently asked questions and the most interesting, so let’s get to it!

Kaleigh asked, “When was your first kiss?”
Hmmmm....I think, my first kiss was Jessi Chandler. Haha! Out in the school parking lot in 6th grade. So funny!

Haha! Thanks for your question Kayleigh! Alright, Ciara wants to know “Have you ever had the chance to meet any of your fans?”
Yes I have! I think its the best thing to experience too. You really get to see how inspired people are by you and that’s really uplifting.

Thanks a lot Ciara! Eric wants to know, “Do you think you’ll ever turn into a celebrity?”
I think that with hard work and a good mind set, I have a good chance of doing something with music. If I could go everyday for the rest of my life, not being famous and just make at least 3 people happy with my music, that would be okay with me.

Very cool! Thanks Eric! Next up is Hailey, she asked “How do you deal with the haters?”
Don't listen. There is always going to be someone that doesn't agree with what your doing or how your doing it. I do what I love and what my fans love. “Whip your hair“ as Willow Smith says. Haha.

Lol! Alana asked “What is currently your favorite song?”
I think it would be “All of the Lights” Kanye, Rihanna and Cudi.

And last but not least, we have somebody who shares my name lol! Ari K. asked, “Is it weird for you to suddenly have all these fans and girls in love with you?"
Not weird. Different. Its something that just happened over a couple months. I wouldn't trade it for the world I think I’m a role model in a way. I love what I do. Not stopping anytime soon. :)

And there you have it folks! Dylan, it’s been a pleasure! Thank you so much for hanging out! I’d like to give a special shoutout to Hannah Stankus and Cassidy Ohrt who are probably your biggest fans! I'm so happy to have you! I've been waiting a long time to speak with you, and I'm so glad that I've finally got the chance! Let's get right into it! The most obvious question would be, how did you get your start in music, what inspired you?
Music started at a very early age in my life. I sang as a toddler and by the time I was 5-years-old, I was singing solos on my church platform. I guess you can say it was never really a choice, rather a part of who I was and still am. I felt the need to share that part of me with everyone at church, and it was there that I not only developed as a person, but also cultivated this musical gift I believe was given to me by God. He has inspired me to pursue this career and fulfill my dreams.
That's an awesome answer. You touched on my next question a little bit already, but maybe we can elaborate a little bit. You obviously believe in God, but what role does he play in your life?
Yes, I am a firm believer in God. There is no doubt that He has placed me where I am, given me the family that I have, and put me in the situations that I have been through for a reason. When I look back on my life I didn't understand why certain things had to happen the way they did, but now, it all makes sense and I'm grateful He did things His way rather than mine. Knowing this, I believe that God's hand is over my life guiding me into the future that He has planned for my life.
Beautiful. I know that can be considered a very personal question, thank you for answering. So let's get to the music, who are some of your biggest influences in life and music as well?
In life, my family/"team" have always influenced me. From what I wear to what I sing, we approach everything together and as a unit we make decisions together, I value their opinion and trust those closest to me fully. In music, I have always looked up to the greats such as Luther Vandross, Boyz 2 Men, Whitney Houston, and Celine Dion, to name a few. These are artists who perfected their gifts and never compromised. They truly were talented and awesome role models. Today, however, we are lacking the Celine Dion's of the world. The business has been consumed with vulgar lyrics and racy fashions. Autotunes has taken over and I think it is so sad that young people have not had the chance to experience pure music. I think it is even more troubling that young people are looking up to artists who are more concerned with their definitions of art rather than being role models. I have never agreed with that mentality nor has my team. For that reason and many others, I aspire to be a positive influence just like the greats from earlier decades have been for me.
I completely agree, and you hit the nail on the head with that answer. That's exactly why I started LivingTru.com, we need more positive music role models in the forefront. Now, I have to say, I've had your cover of "Who I am" on repeat since the very first time I heard it! Did Nick Jonas ever reach out to you regarding it?
Who I Am always brings great memories. It was one of the first decisions that were made collectively as a team. We all did our part, and the results were pure magic. It got a lot of attention including the Jonas crew. Not only was it listed as one of their favorite covers, but we received personal feedback from his team confirming that we did something really great. Like all things in life, it’s always nice to see your hard work pay off.
Agreed! You really couldn't have done a better job on that cover, it was brilliant! So, Are you currently working on an album or any other projects? What do we have to look forward to?
Yes, I am working on an album that will rock your socks! To be completely honest, this entire year has been a whirl wind, and I love that I am in the studio every week laying down a track, writing new songs, and doing what I love. I have a new song called Dumb Dumb Boy which was just released on itunes. It’s a great dance track and I look forward to getting out there and performing for my fans. Cool! I love that song! Guys, make sure you purchase "Dumb Dumb Boy" on iTunes! So, let's get off the music for a sec. As far as society is concerned, what changes do you hope to see over your lifetime?
I kind of talked about this a little bit before, but my greatest hope for society would be love. I know that sounds cliché but it's true. I'm not talking about the kind of love found in a boyfriend or girlfriend. I'm talking about doing the right thing by others. Look around you. The world is falling a part. We are in constant war, natural disasters are becoming more and more prevalent; and young kids are killing themselves more each year because of bullying. We need to make a change. First, by understanding that no matter who you are, you are influencing someone. You can influence someone to do good or bad, and if you don't want to be a role model, than too bad because somewhere out there, someone is looking at you. We need to encourage society to do the right thing by eliminating hate and replacing it with forgiveness, acceptance, and love.
Priscilla, I can honestly say that you've given me some of the best answers to these questions. It's nice to know that other people care about our society just as much as I do. Especially those that are in the forefront. While we're on the current state of things, how do you feel about the current state of music, and the industry?
I miss real music. I mean, I miss the days when ballads were played on the radio and artists could actually sing live. Don't get me wrong, I love pop and dance music. Beyonce and Usher are some of my favorites because they have combined today's current trends with actual musical talent. They're fashion forward, great dancers, and sing the heck out of any song. The more I listen to the radio, however, the more I'm seeing artists like these fade away. I hope that the industry will stop praising mediocrity and start recognizing talent.
Me too! I believe we'll get back to the basics one day. Hopefully people will get tired of mediocrity, and go back to the original formula which was all about good music, and actual talent. The Industry is growing and the newer artists are getting younger and younger, what advice would you give to someone wishing to pursue a career in music, or any other field of their choice?
Go for it! And don't give up. This career is not easy and it definitely has its ups and downs, but if you love what you do, go for it. Don't forfeit your dream for something that seems easier. More importantly, don't abort your destiny. Excellent advice! So I have 2 more questions for you, after hearing all of your answers and seeing how level-headed you are, I have to know, what keeps you so grounded?
My family keeps me grounded. I am surrounded by a lot of "real people." They always encourage and praise me, but they are not afraid to tell me I got it wrong and try again.
That's good, we all need a strong support system backing us up. Honesty is key when you're putting yourself out there the way that you and any other artist does. It's been great talking to you Priscilla, this is my last question and I'll let you go, what do you want your music to do for others?
I want my music to bring people joy. I hope it will inspire people to live their lives as it was meant to be. Priscilla, it's been an absolute pleasure! I can't wait for everything that you have coming up, please keep us updated on your success! However, you gotta check out this next "feature" with our most anticipated Smooth Jazz Artist, the Sax Man, Mr. Charley Langer! With the smooth sounds that are reminiscent of Phil Woods, Boney James. and Grover Washington, to name a few, Langer is on a mission to share his smooth musical skills with the world! Writing an article about the "Sax Man" is cool, but if you really want to get a clear understanding of who this man is, read on!

Hey! Mr. Langer we finally meet! Albeit on paper, but nonetheless, we meet! Lol! The first and obvious question is, how long have you been peforming? What artist's do you listen to and how do they influence you?

My approach to the saxophone is definitely rooted in both classical and jazz. I listened to a lot of “legit” (classical) players like Harvey Pittel and Donald Sinta, as well as jazz guys like Paul Desmond, Phil Woods, and Richie Cole. I didn’t really get interested in more popular saxophone styles until later. I think my tone still has quite a bit of Pittel, Desmond, with a touch of Phil Woods. My improvization is fairly lyrical and, when I play straight-ahead jazz, my lines are probably more similar to Desmond than anyone else that I can think of. When it comes to “smooth jazz”, it’s hard to play that style without being influenced by Grover Washington, Jr. and David Sanborn. I also like the jazz-fusion sounds of the Yellowjackets, Dave Weckl Band, and Steps Ahead.

Your sax skills are mad cool, and you exemplify a gentle prowess when you play...is this something you've always done, or have you had formal training?

First of all, thank you! Honestly, my tone hasn't changed that much over the years, but I've had to work hard at everything else. I practice a lot of scales and patterns! Concerning my training, I have a master's degree in saxophone performance from the University of Southern California. And I've been fortunate to have some great teachers, including Vincent Gnojek, Douglas Masek, and Laura Hunter.

Wow, I agree that having good teachers can impact your life. Man, I'm grateful I've had a few in my life, lol! Your breath control is on point and the exuberance you bring to the music you play is cool, and laid back. Where do you think that vibe comes from?

Those who know me personally would tell you my musical vibe is just an extension of my personality. I'm a pretty laid back person, and a bit nerdy. Now that I think about it, it was probably Desmond's coolness--and, frankly, his "nerdiness"--that fascinated me and moved me to emulate him. His playing was typically understated, but brilliant. I admire that.

Cool. I know I have a lot of questions, but are your parents musically inclined, and do you have siblings who perform? Is playing the Sax your full time job, and what other interests do you have?

Music was very important in our home while I was growing up, and it was my grandmother who started teaching me piano when I was in the fourth grade. I loved music, but wasn’t particularly excited about playing the piano. When I was in the fifth grade, my parents bought me an alto saxophone. My dad played the trumpet, my step-mother takes piano lessons to this day, my sister plays the flute, and my brother plays the trombone. While I'm the only family member who continues to actively perform, music was a huge influence on the kind of people we became -- you just can't master an instrument without developing some life skills.

The Saxophone is not my full time job at the moment. When I finished school, it was more difficult to be a full time musician and live a balanced life than it is today. Technology and a shift in people's attitudes are changing that. I can do recording sessions for other people without leaving my house now. I can sell my albums on the internet. There are musicians making good incomes doing short house concert "tours" instead of being on the road for months at a time.

Other interests? Hmmm...I'm actually a shallow person! Kidding! I enjoy art and culture. I like to fish rivers and streams and spend time in the mountains or at the beach. I like playing games with my family and taking walks.

Lol, I love a sense of humor! I believe you can probably play anything! I mean there are a lot of folks who have re-recorded other artist's songs, but not as well as the original. How do you feel about your skills in this area?

Again, thank you! Although I play other people's music, I know I'm always going to be compared to the person who made the song famous. That's just the way it is. I've recorded some jazz standards, and it's always gratifying when someone says, "Your version is my favorite!"

Right? Its hard to follow in the original's footsteps, lol! I got feedback from people who really enjoyed hearing your Sax abilities! Do you plan to collaborate with other artists?

Actually, I need input from other musicians. Some people do a great job of going it alone. I can't do that. Almost everything I do is collaborative. A number of the songs on my album were co-written by Mark Morris, who is a wonderful guitarist. Mark is my hero. He rescued a few of my songs that I thought were destined for the trash can. I met Mark on an internet music forum, and he suggested collaborating. At first, I just played on some of his tunes. Then I asked him to help set the groove for my scratch tracks on “City Lights”. He not only got it grooving, but he sent me back that cool guitar counter-melody on the bridge. Mark and I both use the same recording software, so we sent audio tracks to each other over the internet.

Modern technology, you gotta love it right?! Your songs are dope! How did you feel recording them, were you nervous and what frame of mind were you in while recording?

Recording requires a different mindset than playing live. I record myself all the time when I practice, so I'm a lot more comfortable with it now than I used to be. Even so, when I'm working on a serious project, I try to tell myself, "Hey, this is just a practice take." Otherwise, I tend to get focused on the fact that the "red light" is on.

I have just a few more questions. What role does religion or spirituality play in your life, and if there is one thing you could do to make this world a better place, what would it be?

I'm a Christian. I believe my art reflects who I am and, indirectly, who God is. It says in Romans that God's creation testifies to His invisible qualities. I think the same can be said of man: his creation testifies to his qualities. The more I resemble God--i.e., the more I become conformed to His image--the more my art resembles Him also. As to making the world a better place...I'm starting by being the best me that I can be!

Wow, "my art reflects who I am..." that statement says alot, its something for me to think about as I continue on with my website!!! What venues will or have you performed in?

I've played in clubs, casinos, churches, theatres, concert halls, convention centers, stadiums, and even at the second inauguration of Ronald Reagan! But right now, I'm excited about doing some house concerts. I love the concept of playing music in an intimate environment without the hype. If I might make a shameless plug, I have a newsletter that will keep you up to date. I also give away quite a bit of free music to my subscribers. Ar, I moved this below!! You can sign up at: http://www.charleylanger.net.

Shameless plugs are cool, I'll put your social networks at the end of our interview! Okay, this is the last question, lol! how do you channel or spread your "positive energy?"

I think this quote answers the question nicely: “I simply want to reach a level where I will never cease to make progress.” — Sonny Rollins

Nicely said! It's been a blast speaking with you, thank you so much for spending some time with us at www.LivingTru.com! So for starters, How did you get started in music? and what inspired you?
Well, I've always had a passion for music. My family tells me all the time that I was a singing baby, lol. So, I've always been influenced by music. As I got older it sort of progressed into me wanting to write and perform.

Lol Okay, so clearly your interest in music started at a very young age. Now, I know that you write your own songs, but where do you get your inspiration from?
As a Gospel Musician, I'm often just inspired by the power of God. I can be in a church service just witnessing the awesome power of God, when I'm inspired to write. Also, when I think of the struggles that people around me are faced with everyday, it inspires me to write as well. That is probably why I write so many songs about relationships, because even as Christians, we have relationships and need direction.

That’s true. We Christians are still people, and we all need to listen to music that we can relate to without having to be limited to one genre. I know you’ve talked about this a little bit already, but what role does God play in your life?
Ari, God is everything in my life! Literally! Lol, I'm a PK. So I was born and raised in the church. And even when I tried to stray away, I came right back to God. It's impossible to stay away from someone you've known your entire life without feeling like something is missing, you know?

I know exactly what you mean! That just shows how awesome God is, the fact that he pulls you back even when you call yourself trying to get away from Him, lol. So, is that why you decided to pursue Christian R&B? Or should I say, “R&P” music?
Actually, it was in 2009 when I first started to record any type of music. I started off with a Praise & Worship sound. My group, "High Praise" and I recorded a three track EP called, 'Brand New Morning'. So initially, I was leaning more towards that style. But I've always loved R&P, and it was something that I wanted to try. So in January of 2011 I decided to start recording R&P, and the response I have received in just two months has been amazing!

Awesome! We all want our hard work to be recognized in a positive way. So as far as your message goes, what do you want people to take from your music?
You know, I want people to see real life! Christian music is at a point where If you sing about a relationship, it's automatically assumed that you are not a Christian. I can't even wrap my mind around that. There are so many married Christians. How did they get married? I'm sure they had a relationship prior to that marriage right? and during that relationship they probably were faced with some of the issues that my music covers. Now, with that being said, If they would have had something similar to my music to listen to, God may have spoken to them through that music concerning that relationship. I feel like the Church sometimes hides behind Religion and pretends that real life doesn't happen. But it does. Even the bible discusses relationships. So I really want people to be able to relate to the 'Real' content that my music delivers, and also be able to find hope and the peace of Jesus through my lyrics.

Beautiful, I absolutely agree! There has to be a balance in life, even as a Christian. Nobody’s perfect, and we all go through things. Personally, music gets me through a lot of issues on a daily basis (lol). Off the music for a minute, what changes do you hope to see over your lifetime?
I would like to see the church 'lighten up'! Not compromise, but seriously, just see reality, because life happens.

Haha, I’m with you on that one! So Erica, do you remember your very first performance? How was the experience?
My very first performance was at a school play where I sang a duet. I was really young, maybe 5-years-old, I can't remember the details but I remember feeling like it was the biggest night of my life (lol).

Aww, that’s sweet (lol). So since that first time on stage, what has become your greatest ambition?
Honestly, my greatest ambition is to do the will of God. I'm ready to do whatever God wants me to do. If its music, fine. If not, that's fine too. I'm just at the point in my life right now, where being obedient to God is a priority for me.

Wow, we have a lot in common! I feel the exact same way! God’s will is always my first priority. You see things a lot more clearly when you focus on Him. I love that answer (lol)! Tell me, as far as life or music, what has been your biggest moment thus far?
The biggest moments for me have been the enormous amount of support that I have received from fans! Its been crazy, just the Love and support that I get when I'm traveling & performing. Also the support I’ve been getting from other Christian performers like Canton Jones, T-Haddy, & so many others. It's priceless to have people in your corner that believe in you.

Very true, especially people that can relate to what you do. Now, I know that I’ve kept you for a long time, so this is my last question (lol), do you have anything big and exciting coming up in the near future?
Yes! and I'm so excited to share it with you first! My video for my single 'Secrets' has just been filmed. We wrapped up a few days ago. So be on the lookout for that in the very near future. Also, My Mixtape 'Introducing Erica Diamonds' dropped in April of this year. I'm really excited about that! The mixtape is hosted by T-Haddy & it really shows my fans who I am as an artist. Also, my single, 'Secrets' is getting national airplay on radio stations. I'm really excited about that because a lot of urban Gospel Artists don't get that opportunity. So I'm very grateful.

That’s really great Erica, I’m very happy for you! And I‘ll definitely be on the lookout for everything that you’ve got coming up! Thanks again for stopping through, and please keep me updated on your success! Guys, you know what to do! Connect with Erica on all of her social networks. Make sure you keep up with what she’s doing!

Twitter
Youtube
Facebook
Official Website

Check out Erica Diamonds' latest single "Secrets" I promise you'll love it!

Man! Talking about ‘accentuating the positive!” There is nothing negative about our next feature! She’s a woman with raw talent, and a woman who has a penchant for soulful tunes. She is also the first female Vocalist to be featured at LivingTru.com, and she is definitely a young woman who understands the purpose of music and how to utilize it, in such a way, that makes people stop and take notice. Come with us as we showcase the genuinely humble, and remarkably talented, Ms. Jori.

The first and obvious question Jori is, how long have you been singing? What artist's do you listen to and how do they influence you?
Well I have been singing since I was 9-years-old. I was singing to myself during recess and one of my peers overheard me and said that I could sing. The rest is history! As far as the artist's that I listen to... they range from Beethoven to Beyonce. But, I am influenced more by the older generation. I love the rifts and runs of their vocal style.

I know what you mean. I grew up on "old school" music, and I love it! Your vocals are very strong, forceful even, and you exemplify such power when you sing. Is this something you've always done, or have you had formal training?
I've had about a year worth of training with world renowned vocal coach, Robin Brown. I definitely noticed the difference in power and control after she taught me the proper breathing techniques.

Yeah, it shows in your music! Your breath control is on point and I love the style you bring to each song, where do you think all of that energy comes from?
I think the energy comes from within. When I'm on stage I feel completely free. It is a euphoric feeling.

I can imagine that! Its probably close to the way I feel each time I feature a new talent! Lol! Do you come from a musical family, do you have siblings who sing, and do you have any plans to record a mixtape, or CD?
I come from a family of singers. My grandfather was in a Doo-Wop group back in the day. My uncle, who sings, had a huge impact on me wanting to sing. When I was younger he was pursuing his musical career, so I spent many days going to his performances and video shoots. My two younger sisters also sing. Right now I am in the studio writing and recording original songs; I plan to release a single on itunes.

That's cool! Being a Songwriter and Vocalist has to be rewarding, because not only are you writing the songs, but you sing them too, which means that you can project what you really feel from within. And, it gives insight into the artists' psyche! I believe your voice will definitely appeal to the masses, and LivingTru.com likes the idea of being just one of the vehicles used to take you where you wanna go!Lol! What would you do to help someone in their career endeavors, (any career)?
One of the things that I look forward to doing in the future is helping kids like me get prepared for the music industry. I can do this by providing them with the tools and knowledge they will need, and by opening a school that caters to performance careers in the "mainstream" music industry. I feel like it's something that's missing from the world, simply because there are many formal music schools, but none that would have really prepared people like me for what I want to do.

Very well said! And its great to see another young person interested in the direction of younger people, and having the wherewithal to help them! I love kids and I believe they need all the help we can give them as long as its steering them in a positive direction, lol! Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
I see myself being on top of my game, traveling, performing, and just really devoting myself one thousand percent to music... meaning, I would have graduated from school so that I can focus all my energy to my career. I see success! :)

Well, success is a really cool vision, and may we all get there and remember to help those who are less fortunate along the way! Smile. Are you ever nervous about performing, and what frame of mind do you have to be in before singing?
I always get butterflies before I go on stage because waiting to perform is so nerve racking to me. I always try to relax/chill and think about the words to the songs I'm going to sing. Keeping in mind, that I am telling the audience a story.

I've either heard or read many Artists say the same thing with regards to being nervous before performing! Its kinda funny to hear that especially if the artist has mad vocals, lol! I have just a few more questions. What role does religion or spirituality play in your life, and if there is one thing you could do to make this world a better place, what would it be?
God is the most important thing in my life. He comes first. He keeps me grounded and humble. If there is one thing I could do to make the world a better place, it would be to make everyone genuinely love each other. I know that sounds corny, but I feel like if we all loved one another then the world would be a million times better.

Wow! That's not corny at all! Its a shame that simple things can keep us divided when we should be more unified as a society. What venues have you performed in, and who's your greatest supporter?
I've performed in venues all over Atlanta, The Apache Cafe, The CW and The Atrium just to name a few!. My greatest supporter or supporters would have to be my mother and father. They support my dreams by coming to every single one of my shows. They provide everything I need for my career; from wardrobe to studio equipment.

It's great having someone believe in you, whether its a parent, or a person in your community! My mom supports me too, and I am very grateful for that! Okay, this is the last question, lol! How do you channel your "positive energy?"
I channel my positive energy through music itself; I use all my bottled up emotions to fuel the songs that I write, then I release it all when I perform them. Lol. I enjoyed answering the questions!

LOL! I enjoyed having you! Thank you so much! Alright LivingTru readers, you know what to do! Be sure to connect with Jori on all of her social networks, and check out her video below!
Youtube
Official Website

OMG! LivingTru.com has got, Musician, Patrick Donovan in the house! Its been a roller coaster ride getting this feature together, but well worth it!!! “I am your thunderstorm and you are my fire…” talking about some epic love! This song should be an anthem to all relationships and knowing when to let go! It’s hot, its cold, its tumultuous, and its passionate! Kudos to Patrick and his love of music and a big SHOUT OUT to the, lyricist, E-HOS and the gang! Read on if you want to see what all the hype is about!

We've had a few hits and misses, but now we're on track! Its really nice talking to you Patrick, lets get started! Where do you get your music influence?
I've spent my whole life listening to music, as I was introduced to it at a young age, and I got a lot of influence from that. I was also influenced to get into music by my mom and my grandpa who were both incredibly talented musicians.

Cool! I find that most artists have someone in their family who is musically inclined, lol. How long have you been a musician?
In 4th grade I started playing the Saxophone; from there I fell in love with creating music. It gradually turned into playing guitar, piano, singing and songwriting. But I've been making music for a very, very long time.

Wow! You have a lot of skills going on, I like that! Have you always wanted to perform professionally?
I've always dreamed about it, but it wasn't until last year that I thought about seriously considering, or pursuing a profession in music. It's a tough industry but I would kill to be a part of it.

Lol. I feel it, but don't hurt nobody, lol! Seriously though, did you come from a musical household, if so, what was it like growing up?
I don't think I've ever had a day in my life where I didn't hear music. My dad is a music lover, as is my mom who also played piano for years. My sisters and I were all in band in school, so music was always in the house. I found lots of inspiration in all of the different kinds of music that I was exposed to at such a young age.

That's cool that you and your sisters share the same heart for music. And, having parents who love music only intensifies your awareness of how important it is. What is some of the best advice your parents ever gave you?
My parents have always told me to just be myself. The reason this has become such important advice is that, as a songwriter, without being honest you lose the entire sense of the art form. The minute you write a song you can't relate to is the minute you've settled for something that isn't what the art is about. It's about expression, and expressing yourself is hard to do if you're not being yourself one hundred percent.

So true! Music is definitely the art of expression and it is a very communicative device that draws people together. Its powerful! And its just my opinion, but I think we should utilize it in a positive way. What is it that you would like the world to know about you and your music?
If I could tell the World anything about my music it would be, simply, that I hope they can find a connection to it. I like to write about things that are happening or have happened in my life, and it's comforting to hear when someone else is going through or has gone through the same thing. Even if it's not a great thing, it proves that we're not alone.

Eloquently put! And I totally agree! So, what do you think you can contribute to society to help make it a better place?
Music has powers that people underestimate incredibly. If I could share a song with someone and have it make their day a little bit better, or have it change the way they think about something, then that's a contribution. Even if it's tiny, I like knowing that I might be making a difference.

Cool, I would say that is definitely the effect of "positive energy," something that we at LivingTru greatly care about! Where do you see yourself, musically, 5 years from now?
Still playing and still writing. Even if I end up graduating and going to grad school or getting a job in business, I don't think I'll ever stop making music. It's like my therapy; I honestly don't know what I would do without it.

By all means, please don't stop, especially if you can help others! Lol! And, as I mentioned in the previous paragraph, "positive energy" is something we relish...What do you consider "Positive Energy" to be?
I think that positive energy can be found in anything that puts a smile on someones face. It can be found in virtually anything, you just have to look hard enough to see it sometimes.

Thanks Patrick! It was cool getting to know you and how you feel about life in general. Keep making music! And if you do end up in grad school or working in a profession outside of music, don't forget to take that "positive energy" with you!

Guys be sure to connect with Patrick on all of his social networks and his website!
Twitter
Youtube
Website

Also, don't forget to check out the new video by E-Hos, "Let it Go" featuring Patrick!

This edition of One-On-1 features Drummer Jacqueline Cassell! Jacqueline has been playing the drums for 6 years now, but she has the skill and style of a music veteran. I had the opportunity to speak with Jacqueline about her music, life and a few of today’s issues. Not only is she an awesome drummer, she’s a really good person and has a kind heart. You know what to do, click the link to find out more about Drummer, Jacqueline Cassell!

Jacqueline! Thank you so much for coming through! I have quite a few questions for you, so let’s get into it! For starters, how long have you been a musician?
I have been playing drums for 6 years now, but when I was younger, I started playing the piano around age 6, I picked up the acoustic guitar and bass guitar not too long ago. It's nice to have an instrument to fall back on when you can't make all the noise you want on the drums, anytime you want, and I think its really important for any musician to play multiple instruments. Not only is it an impressive task, but it also broadens your musical horizon and you learn more about what really makes up music today.

That’s true. It also keeps you from getting bored with one particular instrument and it‘s nice to see how each one differs. So, as far as drumming goes, where do you get your musical influence?
I'd say most of my influence comes from drum teachers I've had in the past, and of course drummers I've met, but currently I am really influenced by the drummers and musicians that I see on Youtube. I get so many messages and emails from viewers and musicians sending me videos of their drumming and its so great to see how passionate they are and it really motivates me to keep playing.

That’s so cool! It’s great when your peers keep you motivated, but what about your family? Are they musical? If so, what was it like growing up?
I really don’t come from a musical family. My dad nor mom grew up playing musical instruments. My brother fiddled around with the guitar for a year or so, but never really gained interest in it. My grandparents on both sides of the family, however, did have a musical background. It wasn't until my stepbrothers and I decided to bang on some trashcans that I realized I might want to play the drums! So I eventually got a real drum-set, and the rest is history...

Wow, so you’re really the first to pursue it professionally in your family huh? Most musicians have a musical background, but the fact that you don’t shows that this is definitely a gift. So, even though you may not have gotten musical talent from your parents, what’s some of the best advice they’ve given you?
My parents are such awesome people. I'm so lucky to have them as parents. They've always told me, especially the past few years as I graduated high school and got into college, to follow my dreams. I know that is so cliche, but my Dad always tells me that he wants me to be happy and do something that I am going to wake up everyday and be so happy to be doing, and right now that is music. I can't see myself sitting in a cubicle everyday crunching numbers. My parents have taught me that life is short and you need to make the best of it and do what you love!
That’s great advice! I know it’s something that we hear a lot, but that doesn’t make it any less true. Life should be fun! So, what is it that you would like to express through your music. What would you like the world to know about you?
I put all of my heart into every one of my drum videos and I have all of you guys to thank! I wouldn't be where I am today without you. Drumming is something I am truly passionate about and I plan on doing it for years to come, but I really genuinely appreciate every single one of you viewers!!

Great! We appreciate the videos lol! Alright, I have one more question for you as far as the music goes, and then I’d like to get into some other topics. Where do you see yourself, musically, 5 years from now?
I will definitely still be drumming, but do not know where or for what! But that’s the love of it all, I can't wait to see where this crazy world of Youtube brings me. It's gotten me to places so far that I am so grateful for, and I can't wait to see what is to come!

Me either! I know whatever it is, it’s going to be big and I can’t wait to see it! So, we’re getting down to the last few questions and I’d really like to pick your brain about some other things. LivingTru is about changing the world and making the it better, what do you think you can contribute to society to do just that? I'd love to take the gift of music and spread it around the world. I want to do mission trips to third world countries in the future years, and work with my church to spread the importance of music and worship. I believe music truly has a healing power, and its universal, that’s what I love about music!

That’s so true! Music, in my opinion, very influential and really has the power to kind of dictate your current state of being. That’s why it’s so important to be careful about what kind of music you take in, and to keep it positive. Speaking of that, what do you consider "Positive Energy" to be?
Positive Energy is what you make it to be. Energy is energy, but its up to you to make it either negative or positive. Positive energy is what motivates me everyday to get up and enjoy life. It's what inspires me to keep posting drum videos, it's an important thing!

Awesome! So back to the music briefly, I see that you have a lot of views and subscribers on Youtube, and the response that you get from people is really good. Do you plan on pursuing music and performing professionally?
When I started posting videos on Youtube about 5 years ago, I never thought It would go anywhere, and to now have over 3.5 million views, it really just is unreal. I am at a point where the exposure is overwhelming...I've had people I look up to tell me they've seen my videos, or come across my videos, and that just blows my mind! The internet is truly amazing. But anyways, back to the question...I've come to a realization that I've worked so hard, and continue to do so, on my videos, that it would seem foolish to not do anything with my drumming at this point. It would be an absolute dream to play drums professionally...is that my calling? Only God knows, but boy, do I hope He likes my drum videos, ha!

Haha! I’m sure he does! After all, He is the one that gave you the talent. For my last question I was going to ask whether or not you believe in God, but you’ve already answered that lol. So I guess, what I’ll ask is what role does God play in your life?
It may be last here in this interview, but absolutely not least in my book! Wow where would I be without God? Well not here, we know that! I am just so blessed with a great family, friends, fans, etc. and God continues to bless me in ways that a million thank you's wouldn't be enough. I am very involved in my church back at home, and here in the ministry on campus here at college. I don't know what I would do without my Lord and Savior, he is my everything, and I am so grateful for that! He is the way, the truth and the life!

That he is!!! Thank you so much for speaking with me Jacqueline! It’s been my pleasure! Everyone be sure to subscribe to Jacqueline’s Youtube channel and connect with her on all of her social networks!

Twitter
Youtube
Check out Jacqueline's Drum cover of "All I want" below!

I’m really excited about this one! Now as you know, I have a lot of questions for you! For starters, how long have you been singing and what inspired you to start?
I have been singing for as long as I can remember but really starting to have dreams to pursue music a couple years ago. I was also inspired by Justin Bieber with his incredible talent and his love for music as well.

Yeah, Justin is phenomenal! He pretty much took over the world in 2 years (lol)! I’ve noticed that you cover a lot of his songs, what is it that you appreciate about his music?
He is multi talented and made his dream come true with hard work at a young age and has earned the respect of so many other artists. Also, I think his voice is amazing and his songs are so catchy they just touch me.

True, I find myself singing “Baby” more times than I’d like to admit! So, what is your favorite genre of music, and who are some of your favorite Artists?
I love Hip Hop, but my favorite is Pop. My favorite artists are Justin Bieber, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Usher, and MJ.

Alright! You’re taste is pretty eclectic, which is awesome! Now, is music something that you would like to pursue professionally? What are your dreams for your career?
Yes, that’s my dream and goal in life. My dreams for my career would be to travel the world and to see new places when I perform for people that love my music.

It will definitely happen for you Austin! You seem so mature, do you have a strong support system backing you? How does your family feel about your decision to pursue music?
Yes I have a wonderful Mom that supports me in everything I do. I'm also very close to my Grandparents who always have encouraged me.

That’s great Austin, they’ve obviously done a great job making an impact in your life. I wanted to ask, you became really popular on Youtube very fast. How did you market yourself?
I set up my own website, made a YouTube account for singing videos and also started broadcasting live Ustreams and online chats

Wow, so you really invested in Social Networking, an obviously effective method (lol). Do you have anything big and exciting coming up in the near future?
I am excited to participate in the upcoming YouTube event, Playlist Live in Orlando, Florida. I'm also continuing to work on some more videos including an original.

Wow! That’s great! I’ll be on the lookout for that! Playlist Live? That’s really exciting! Great things are in your future Austin! I’m not going to keep you too much longer, I just have a couple more questions. What would you say to another kid wanting to pursue a career in music?
I would say to go for it! Never ever give up on your dreams, and to sing or play their instrument like nobody is listening. Also that we all have haterz and we just have to ignore them because they're probably just jealous or upset with themselves and are probably just taking it out on you. Just block them out, and look at your awesome comments that say you're amazing and to live your dreams because they know you will make it someday. That is what keeps me going.

That’s an awesome answer! Every kid needs to hear that, regardless of the profession that they choose. So Austin, for my last question I’d like to know, what is your greatest ambition in life?
That would have to be making a successful career from music and possibly working with my inspiration, Justin in the future. Also, traveling the world, seeing new places and performing up on stage.

You are truly an inspiration Austin! Thank you so much for chatting with me, I’ll definitely be on the lookout for all of your upcoming projects, and please keep me updated on your success!

Everyone be sure to connect with Austin on all of his Social Networks!

Youtube
Facebook
Website

Check out Austin Mahone's cover of "I'll Be" by Ed McCain!

This next edition of One-On-1 features a singer songwriter that I’ve been a fan of for a while, Lavance Colley! At only 27-years-old Lavance is already doing big things in the music industry! He is currently in Japan performing and working on an upcoming project, and he‘s not slowing down anytime soon! Check out this edition of One-on-1 with Lavance Colley!

Hey Lavance!!!! I’m so excited to have you! I’ve been a fan of yours for a while now! I have a lot of questions for you! So for starters, How long have you been in the music business and what inspired you to start?
Well Arionna, It’s sometimes hard for me to say. I have been singing since the age of three. My nickname as a child was screamer. My mother said that I was always screaming and singing, so she decided to nickname me that, lol! As I got older I would always sing in my church, school choirs, and talent competitions. I can even remember the first time I sang in public at my middle school. It was the theme song to the movie "Sister Act." I sung "I will Follow Him." Lol. I remember hitting high notes! People were coming up to me and my mother after the show telling us how great of a job I did. As I got older I continued to sing. When I turned 18-years-old I got a gig singing backup for Chante Moore and Kenny Lattimore. That opened up a lot of doors for me. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and I am so thankful to have had my BIG start singing professionally with them. They really taught me a lot about work ethics and what it really takes to make it in the music industry. So I guess I started singing professionally at age 18. Lol! But, the inspiration to continue singing until I got my first BIG gig came from my mother, Louise Colley. She is a singer as well, and I got every ounce of my talent from her. I remember in church I would sing and always be ALL over the place with my vocals. She would always tell me what I was doing wrong. At the time I hated her advice because I thought she was always judging me. But, I didn't realize until later that she only wanted me to be a better singer. I had pretty much been getting free vocal lessons for over 18 years and they paid off big time! I love my mother so much and I thank God everyday for her. I am sure without her teachings I wouldn't have been as good of a singer. I still sometimes get vocal notes from her and I take them humbly now, lol. Also, what inspired me to start singing professionally was when I did praise and worship at church. I loved being on stage singing, when I would sing I'd forget about my problems. I felt safe, free, and with God. I guess I would say God put this inspiration in my heart. I was always self motivated and determined to sing, and I feel lucky that I knew what my purpose was at such a young age. I know there are many people my age that still don't know what their purpose in life is, but I always just knew I was going to be a singer.

You can always tell by the quality of the music whether the Artist is passionate or not, and I definitely feel the passion in your music. I know that you write your own music, what is the process behind it?
Yes, I do write my own music. I like to write music according to what I feel the track is saying. When I get a track I like to just play the music over and over until I have the music completely inside my mind. Then the creative juices start to flow and I write what I feel with the music. In a way I let the music tell me what to write. Now when I don't have a track to write to I write in a journal. Sometimes it will be about things that are going on in my life and at other times its just about random thoughts in my head. I then go back and look at what I wrote and turn it into a song, or sometimes it just stays there in my journal unused. I feel like the mood for writing has to be one that is natural and free feeling. Sometimes I will dim the lights and burn some candles just to put me in a relaxed and opened mood-and just let whatever I feel come out of me onto paper. This process for me is almost therapeutic and after my writing is done I feel like I have let go of any problems I had from the day. Writing helps me express my emotions. I feel that its very important to be able to write your own music, especially with the way the industry is now-with everyone just being a one hit wonder pop star who's completely produced and manufactured by record companies. When you write your own music, I feel, that you truly become an individual and people will love and respect you more.

Absolutely. How does your family feel about your decision to pursue music? Do you have a strong support system?
Oh yes sweetie. My family supports me to the fullest. I don't think that I would have made it this far if it wasn't for my family. I remember when I was in high school I joined the ROTC program for about 1 year, and I was literally going to join the NAVY after enrolling in that class. An officer from the NAVY base came to my school and gave me some brochures to look at, I took them home to show my Mother, she strongly urged me NOT to join the NAVY. She said that I was to be a singer and shouldn't waste the gift that God gave me! I know this might sound like she was forcing me to do what she wanted for my life, but I believe that she knew that God wanted me to sing. I am so glad that once again I listened to her. Like I said before everything happens for a reason, and if I had joined the NAVY I wouldn't have ever meet Kenny and Chante, and the domino affect of that wouldn't have ever happened, I wouldn't be who I am today. I am so grateful to have a family that supports and loves me. They root for me and have by back in every situation.

Wow, the Navy? You ended up on a completely different path (lol). It’s great that you have a family that backs whatever decisions you make. I’ve noticed that you sing a lot of Gospel songs, what role does God play in your life?
God plays a BIG role in my life. I grew up in church and have always been a very spiritual person. I have always wanted to please God, and I am a big believer that when a person uses their God-given gifts to its fullest potential, God is very pleased. Doesn't matter if your singing gospel or R&B or whatever genre you like. Use your unique qualities to the max and your life will be filled with happiness. I thank God everyday for the gift that I was given. I don't abuse it but love it, respect it, and take care of it. By doing that I feel I am showing God how much I appreciate him for my special gift.

That’s an awesome answer! I love asking that question (lol). So Lavance, what has been the greatest moment of your career thus far?
I would say that the greatest moment I have had so far is when I made the conscious decision to really start taking my career EXTREMELY serious. About a year ago I was in a place in my life that I didn't know what was next for me in my musical career. I was pretty much at a stand still and I really didn't know what I was going to do. I knew I could get gigs, but I wanted to make sure that everything I was doing was to help better me and my goals that I have for myself, and not just take a gig for the money. Don't get me wrong sometimes people have to do things they necessarily don't want to do, that’s life! But I felt like I was just wondering around aimlessly doing whatever with no ideal of where I was headed. It took me having to take some really crappy gigs and getting hurt emotionally, and physically by them to understand my self worth and that God had way BIGGER plans for me then what I was doing at the time. Lol! I had to learn the hard way. But now I truly feel like I am in complete control of my career and I know what direction to take in getting what I want in life. I can finally see myself in the drivers seat, I can see the destination, and it is so very close.

That’s great, I’m happy for you! And as a fan, I’m glad that you’re going full force with your music, simply because I enjoy it so much! (lol) Who inspires and motivates you in your personal life, and your music as well?
When I was a kid I use to idolized Karen Clark Sheard. I used to study every single riff and run she ever did, lol. That would drive my mother crazy! Lol. I was always screaming in the house trying to growl and sing high and stuff, lol. I remember listening to her in my room for hours at a time and watching her "Finally Karen" VHS tape over and over. Wow VHS tapes, lol. At the time it was my only motivation. But as I got older listening to all types of music became my big motivation. I am very eclectic when it comes to music, so I can just sit in my room all day and just listen to every style of music I have in my collection. I am talking about genres from Celtic, to Alternative, to Gospel, to folk, to Jazz. Sometimes I just put my iTunes on shuffle and just let myself be surprised. I think that by listening to all these different styles of music I then was able to create my own style of music. Its kind of like the more you know, the more you have to pull from. That’s what inspires my music. Now when it comes to my personal life, I have a lot of great friends who love and support me and give me sound advice. Some of my friends are even singing now with people from Diana Ross to Mary J. Blige. So if I ever have concerns about my music I can always call them at anytime and they will help me. Also, when I have extra time on my hands I love to read spiritual self help books, they really give me a boost when I am feeling down and lonely even. I think that true motivation must come from ones own self, because if you depend on someone else to motivate you, and they then let you down you loose that motivation. Once I really learned that lesson my life changed for the better.

I must say, I feel inspired just from listening to you speak! You’re absolutely right, ultimately you have to motivate yourself. I appreciate that you’re music taste is so eclectic, if given the chance which Artists would you like to collaborate with?
WOW…that is a tough question. There are so many artists I would love to work with. But one that pops in my head is Janelle Monae. When I first heard her album I fell in love with every song. Her music is like a mixture of Alternative, Funk, R&B and folk. I feel like my music will have that same type of feel to it. You won’t really know what genre I am in, but it will sound pretty damn good. Lol! I have watched a few interviews on Monae and she seems like a very sweet and humble person. Yeah… it would definitely be Janelle Monae. I would love to work with her, "Tight Rope" is my jam! lol

(Lol) The first time I saw her perform, I loved her energy! She’s so animated and she really draws you in. You two would make an awesome track! I can’t believe it, but this is actually that last question that I have for you. The big one! (Lol) What is your greatest ambition?
Hmmm…well. My greatest ambition would be to finally get signed with a major record label and make great music and a big name for myself. Also, I am very interested in doing Broadway Shows like the Lion King, or The Color Purple. I have always had a love for singing and acting onstage. I have plans to one day be in a major Broadway show so who knows, maybe you might see me in New York in a show someday very soon….

Make sure you get me a ticket when it happens! (Lol) Thank you so much for speaking with me Lavance! Like I said, I’ve been a fan for a long time and this is truly an honor! Everybody, make sure you connect with Lavance on all of his social networks!

Youtube
Twitter
Facebook

For my first Celebrity feature I had the chance to interview Singer, Song Writer and Cinematographer Michael Jeffries! Michael Jeffries, respectively known from the popular R&B Soul group "Tower of Power" is back on the scene with a new album entitled “Family Affair” as well as a few other projects he’s got in the works. Check out my latest edition of One-On-1 with Michael Jeffries!

You don’t know how much of an honor this is! Thank you so much for speaking with me Mr. Jeffries! I’m so excited about this!
Thank you Ari, It’s a pleasure to do this interview.

The pleasure is all mine I assure you! So, as you know I have a lot of questions for you! You’re the first celebrity feature that I’ve had as well as the first Artist from the “Old School” so I’m sure you have a lot of knowledge to drop on my readers! So for starters, when did you decide to pursue music, and what inspired your decision?
Since I was just a young lad ( in Memphis ) music was always around, the radio was always on and the popular songs of the day provided the background and sometimes the foreground to everyday life. My uncles and aunts were teenagers and I lived my life looking up to them while trying to understand it all. This was the golden age of the Motown sound and the Memphis sound, it was an era when Radio Dj’s were stars and people would tune in to listen to what the top jocks played. With all the great music coming from Motown and Memphis I had plenty to grow on. But while watching Ed Sullivan I got a glimpse of what would push me into action, James Brown. That night on Ed Sullivan I saw something that would not allow me to sit still, I got up and started skating around imitating what I saw James Brown doing and I was his newest 8-year-old fan! With a mirror and a brush for a microphone I skated and hollered until my parents thought I was good enough for half time entertainment at some of their house parties! I would get so excited when I would hear them tell their party guest that I was really good at doing the James Brown. They would often come and get me to give an impromptu performance. I looked forward to those opportunities and I never shied away from the slightest request. All this James Brown craze lead me to the record store with my 50 cents to buy “ I Feel Good”. I played that record until the grooves wore thin! I thought I would die when my mother took me to see the man himself live at the Oakland Coliseum in 1966. James blew my top off and I haven’t been able to get it back on every since.

Wow! That must’ve been awesome! I would’ve loved to have been at that concert! So obviously James Brown is a favorite of yours, who are some of your other favorite artists past and present?
I am such a Stevie Wonder fan I could listen to his music everyday and not burn out on it. I was able to hang out with Stevie while he was recording Vocals, I thought I had died and went to heaven. The best thing about meeting him was finding out how down to earth he was, no superstar vibe at all.

Really? That’s awesome! You would think that someone of his caliber would be totally celebrity! I guess there’s a lot of humility in the music veterans. Now, as far as your music goes what is your ultimate goal? What do you want your music to do for others?
I like to write songs that send out messages. Just the other day someone was listening to the “Family Affair“ CD and they asked me, “ do you write from your personal experiences?" The answer is yes and no. We’ve all missed opportunities to say” I Love You” to those who really care for us. We have all wished for the ability to “Rewrite “ a situation that was miss handled. My music is speaking to that inner voice that lives inside all of us.

I couldn’t ask for a better answer than that! That’s one of the main components missing in music these days. It’s really hard to relate to a lot of the mainstream, so thanks for bringing the original vibe back! With that said, what are your views on the direction of music these days? Well the most obvious difference is lyrical content in terms of using profanity. Man you would have never heard some of the words that are being used today. I do realize that every era has it’s art form and I can appreciate where music production is coming from now. Working with digital workstations brings a world of production power and creative freedom. I think the organic way of recording ( with the rhythm section all recording together ) still has it’s special place in production, if you’ve got the budget to do it. Today’s music has incorporated sample use into the art form and that’s cool too. It’s all art at the end of the day.

Yeah, that’s true. I guess it all depends on how you look at it. Personally, I don’t have too much patience for all of the profanity because I think it’s unnecessary, but as far as the sampling goes, I can appreciate the creative aspect of it. So, Mr. Jeffries we all know you from Tower of Power, what are the major differences between being in a group, and being a solo artist?
When you’re in a group the focus is on the group sound and may not allow you to explore other areas of music that might better represent where you’re coming from.

Nicely articulated (lol). Alright, let’s get off of the music for a minute. If you don’t mind, I’d like to get a little more personal. I like to ask this next question because I always get a different answer. What changes would you like to see in society over your lifetime?
Man it would be great to see the day when we don’t see color and just see people! Growing up in America can be a very different experience for some. It would be nice to see the day when that statement wasn’t true. The good thing is we as a nation have made considerable progress but there’s still much work ahead.

Agreed! I can’t wait for that either! I know we still have a long way to go, but I believe that with God it’s totally possible. Speaking of God, are you a believer?
I lean on God everyday for direction in my life.

Simply stated, easily articulated! (lol) I’m not going to keep you much longer, I just have a few more questions. What has been your greatest moment thus far?
I think when I became a father tops that list. Just being Dad is a major thing cause in the eyes of your "new to the world children," you are a super hero. To them Dad can do anything. To me that has been the greatest honor of my life.

Beautiful. More young guys need to hear that, being a Dad isn’t an option it’s a gift and it should be cherished! Thank you for being a positive Role Model Mr. Jeffries. So, do you have anything big and exciting coming up in the near future?
We are writing for the next video from the "Family Affair" CD, and producing a video for the song “ Rewrite” a duet with Lenny Williams and myself. I’m working with Sterlen Roberts on the video. Sterlen and I recently completed work on his newest video “Live”. We work well together, the energy is really good. I’m also promoting the CD daily and looking forward to performing.

Cool! I featured Sterlen Roberts not too long ago! I love what he’s doing with his music! I’ll definitely be on the look out for your new video! I just have one more question for you, what is your greatest ambition?
I just want to continue to grow. I’m a firm believer in never resting on what you already know but try to harvest as much knowledge as you can!

That’s great advice! Thank you so much for your time Mr. Jeffries, I really appreciate this! Everybody, you know what to do! Click [here] to purchase Michael Jeffries' new album "Family Affair" and be sure to add him on Facebook as well!

Facebook

Check out "Don't Forget to Say I Love You" by Michael Jeffries!

Muy caliente! LivingTru is proud to feature one of the hottest Latin duos out there, “Neftali Rosado Jr. & Fernando Wilkins Jr.” They are also one of the first Latin groups to grace our site! Rosado & Wilkins play original up-tempo dance music that infuses the Latin sounds of Panama and San Francisco. So, on that note, lets get started with this "ONe-On-1" exclusive and much anticipated interview with co-founders of Temblor Productions, Neftali Rosado Jr. & Fernando Wilkins Jr.!

This interview has been a long time coming, Lol! Thank you for allowing us to get up close and personal with you!
Thanks for having us (Ari)`! We are excited about both this interview and our debut single “Temblor De Rumberos!” The response to the single has been awesome!

Cool! It’s a good feeling of accomplishment when people recognize you for good work that you do! Lol! Where do you get your music influences, what do you do, and what are your objectives?
We get our music influences from everyday life in the neighborhoods we grew up in. We write about traditions, struggles and relationships, and we Compose, Produce and Perform Salsa Music. Our objective is to use our talents to express ourselves musically, and to delight Salsa music lovers all over the world

I can understand that! That’s where the stories come from in music, “tru” life experiences! Yes, that was definitely a plug! Lol! How long have you been musicians?
We have been playing music for a combined total of 20 years on the San Francisco Bay area salsa scene.

Have you always wanted to perform professionally?
No, at first our goal was to get into the local salsa club circuit. After performing cover songs for a while we felt the need to compose and perform our own original material.

Salsa music is very energetic! I come from a mixed family that includes Latinos and when we get together to Salsa or Merengue it is tiring, but so much fun. Lol! Did you come from a musical household, if so, what was it like growing up?
Yes, we come from a family of Panamanian and Puerto Rican background where music is our culture, and a part of every day life.

I feel it! What is some of the best advice your parents have ever given to you?
To set and achieve our goals, stay away from all of the negative influences, such as, drugs and alcohol.

That’s great advice! You gotta have all your senses to do a great job! I’ve listened to your music, and the beat is so exciting that you can’t help but want to dance! What is it that you would like the world to know about you and your music?
We want the world to know that our music is for everyone and that it has no boundaries!

That’s what’s up! Unity and getting to know one another's culture! I’m down for that! Lol! What do you think you can contribute to society to help make it a
better place?
We bring joy to people who both listen to and dance to our music.

Yes! Joy should be contagious and that’s what we try to spread through LivingTru! Let’s make it universal! Lol! Where do you see yourselves, musically, 5 years from now?
We see ourselves finishing a second project and being recognized internationally as recording artist.

What do you consider “Positive Energy” to be?
Positive energy is surrounding yourself with people who share the same visions and goals; maintaining respect for others while being humble, driven and professional.

I agree, humility is very important when trying to spread that positive vibe! Lastly, what role does God play in your life?
God is the prominent role in our lives. Without Him nothing is possible.

Well that sums up our interview! But rest assured LivingTru will be following Temblor Productions! Its been a pleasure speaking with the both of you, Neftali and Fernando! Good luck to you on your journey to spreading “joy!”

Be sure to connect with Neftali and Fernando on their website!
www.temblorproductions.com

“Coming to the stage” for this edition of One-On-1 is Comedian Aaron Burleson! An accomplished comedian he may be, but he is also very knowledgeable and he really has a heart for the world and fixing the current conditions of it. I had the chance to chat with Aaron about his career in comedy as well as his family life and his views on society! “Read more” to check it out!

Aaron!! You don’t know how much I’ve been looking forward to this interview! I’m sure it will be very funny (Lol)! Thanks for sliding through!
Never a problem Ari. Anything for the homey…who is not a clown ( hahahahaha...awkward laugh while trying to play off the bad joke.) I’m really happy to be here. How are you?

I’m great thanks! And thank you for specifying that I am NOT a clown (Lol)! Let’s get into this interview! When did you decide to pursue a career in comedy? What inspired your decision?
Well it’s not just comedy by itself that I want to pursue. Much of my art deals with observations, politics, race, gender, culture and family. I am inspired by theater, entertainment and storytelling. I've always loved all forms of Art including, storytelling, literature, history, poetry, TV, movies, and comic. I want to change the world of comedy and art, and now I have a chance to put all of these great items from my subconscious together with my art. In addition, the community and people who aren’t cared for deserve a voice and advocacy. Lower income communities are being institutionally and systematically oppressed, that's why I am motivated to change this through my art and education. I want to bring sustainable change to these conditions.

Sustainable change? This is my zone right here I‘m all about change, can you elaborate on that? Specifically, what changes would you like to see in society over the next 20 years? Just people not letting fear make them ignorant, discriminative, xenophobic and racist anymore. I’m tired of people hating on others maliciously. I love a good practical joke or a little ribbing from time to time. But when it turns cruel and especially insensitive then it needs to stop. I want all people to be truly equal no matter what gender, identity, ethnicity, or class.

So in other words, you want the whole world to be “Living Tru” Yes, that was a plug (lol)! On a serious note though, the world isn’t going to change overnight, or on it’s own. We as adults have to completely embrace our job as role models for the kids. We have to lead by example. What example would you like to set for the youth? A really bad one! Just kidding! I want kids to know that life is fun and don’t try to grow up too fast. I want them to really appreciate the time they have when they are younger. I want them to see a strong, good, black nerd who’s helping right some of the wrongs in society through art. Hopefully I can motivate them to listen to Michael Jackson‘s Man In the Mirror and “MAKE THAT CHANGE, CHUMONN!!!”

(Lol) That’s a very good answer! Kids tend to grow up way too fast these days! They need to be reminded that it’s cool to still be a kid. So, back to the comedy, how do you go about coming up with new material? Do you have a specific method? What inspires you?
Well I went to college, didn’t do that well but I learned how to study. So I love making observations and studying people and things in society. My comedy is also very inspired by my life and my wonderful crazy family and friends. I have the honor and privilege of utilizing my crew, and my wacky experiences to theatrical effect.

Awesome! It’s cool that your family and friends don’t mind that you use them for comedic effect (Lol)! Do you have a supportive family? How do they feel about your aspirations?
My "Lawah Dawah Crew" (family and friends) goes so Hard in Paint WAKA FLOCKA!!!! (Sorry about that outburst, I didn’t mean it). They have been there for me every step of the way. My parents originally wanted me to be a lawyer but they said that stand up is fine because it suits my outspoken yet intellectual nature. My folks really understand my talent and believe in me and want me to realize my destiny (Sounds really like a superhero. That’s really cool. What would I call myself? Oh! That’s it. “Black Man!”…ok that might need work.)

(Haha!) I ask that question a lot, and I love it when the people I feature have a strong family backing. I think family is really important in every aspect of your life, regardless of the decisions that you make. You spoke about your parents, I assume that they play a major role in your life. Who else do you look up to as an example, or mentor?
My parents have been a tremendous influence and my first real mentors of my life. I have been blessed to come from love. My parents have always been supportive selfless individuals. Coming from beautiful people like these two, I have no excuse as to why I can’t succeed as a person. In addition to my parents, I would have to say Richard Pryor and Louis CK are two comedians which I love to study. Pryor was way before his time. His material and observations on race were simply groundbreaking. Pryor said things that could have got him blacklisted from the entertainment industry. Beneath it all however, Pryor was an artist who was always looking for new stories to tell and ways to push himself as an artist. Louis CK is pure comedy. His observational humor is subversive in nature but packs a punch of relativity that makes it easy for fans to enjoy. As a performer, I have patterned myself to a museum curator. The museum that I am curating is my mind. When I perform, I am allowing folks into my mind but I must make sure that I am speaking clearly and timely so people can get really get the “picture”.

I love that you said “Coming from beautiful people like these two, I have no excuse as to why I can’t succeed.“ What an awesome compliment to your parents! So, what are your greatest ambitions as far as your career, comedy and life?
My greatest ambition is to put out conscious, subversive, humorous, honest and relate-able art to people through different mediums. I am not trying to be a mega star. I don’t want celebrity like some other people. I would rather be a good comedian and actor any day over being a Justin Bieber mega super star. I want to put out good art which people can relate to and resonate with. I also want to bring opportunities to folks and communities who don’t have any advocates. That’s why I want to establish a network of artists, musicians, actors, comedians and activist to look after each other and provide opportunities for one another.

That’s great! We need more people in the world to feel the same way. Let’s take care of what’s important. I’m not going to keep you too much longer, I have a couple more questions for you and then we’ll wrap it up. Are you religious, or spiritual at all? What role does God play in your life
With my family, God and spirituality comes first. As long as I have been doing my art and educating folks, I have always wanted to have a strong spiritual base. At times that spiritual base has been rocked and threatened more times than the X-men Mansion School ( Yes, I am that much of a geek). But a strong faith, discipline and loyalty to my integrity has always seen me through.

That’s a beautiful answer, except for the part about being a geek! I love X-men! (Lol) Alright Aaron, so my last question is what advice would you give to someone wishing to pursue their dreams in the field of their choice?
There will be no one who gives you a golden ticket to success. It will take hard work and an incredible amount of dedication and focus. Always be courteous and never evil.

Thank you so much Aaron! This addition of ONe-On-1 features the man himself, Sterlen Roberts! He's back with a brand new sound, and a new mix-tape entitled, "Beats Piano Me." I recently had the chance to catch up with Mr. Roberts to get the scoop on his latest projects, and to find out a little more about him on a personal level. Click the link to check out this exclusive ONe-On-1!

"Thank you so much for speaking with me Mr. Roberts, lol! And thank you for the copy of "BPM"! I can't wait to listen to it! As you know, I have a lot of questions for you, so let's get into it..."
Yes!! Yes!! I love your Website!!!

Thank you, thank you, lol! So, when did you realize that music was something that you would like to pursue professionally?
When I first heard my song on 94.9,and I was still in high school. I think everyone took me seriously after that.

So, you must've been pretty young starting out if you had a song on the radio by the time you were in high school! Who are some of your biggest influences, in music and life as well?
Hm... Prince, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, and people I know, like Kurt Carr, Jamie and Walter Hawkins and my father. It's funny, I was 13-years-old in the studio with Jamie Hawkins and a dope cat named Zone. Watchin them cats get down, that's where I picked up sequencing beats. My father introduced me to Kurt Carr on an airplane, that's when I got into his music and style. And last but not least, ERIC HUDSON is another influence!!! Man this cat is raw! We have the same background, he just has a long list of hits and I don't (hahahaha). I dig his style big time. He did Kanye West's "Flashing Lights." If I had a choice of who I would want to work on my album with, it would be Stargate and Eric Hudson, who reached out to me once after my XXL spread, however, I never really got in touch with him.

I'm sure it'll happen if you keep pushing! I hope you didn't lose that contact info though lol! You mentioned that your Father inspires you, does your family support you in your decision to pursue music?
Yes. They just want me to be careful. It's a tough industry. They know I've sacrificed a lot, they just don't want me to lose everything for it. For example, I lived with the R&B group "Jodeci" for a few years, and I guess they were scared I would get caught up in crazy L.A. stuff. I'm really focused, and too strong for the fast life. They raised a strong kid.

That's good, and you're right! You definitely have to be strong to survive the music industry. Now, I know that you come from a Christian background, and I always ask this question to anybody that does...What role does GOD play in your life?
Well, I believe that everyone must develop a personal relationship with him, people get so caught up in church they forget why they are there.

Very true, that is by far the most important thing to remember. It should always be about God, not the building that you're in, or the politics. So, let's take it back to the music for a minute. I know that you've just finished up your latest mix-tape "BPM." What made you do a mix-tape as opposed to an album?
Well, I wanted to be in control of my music for once . This mix-tape is 100% ME. Written, produced everything every key, every instrument. This is very special to me. I chose the artist's I wanted to feature. This whole process was nothing but great energy, including filming my own "live" music video. Since I'm still signed to MTL records, legally, I can't drop an album, so to avoid sample clearance and label issues I'm dropping it as a mix-tape, basically giving it away. I have no beef with my label at all we are cool, and I'm sure they understand I have to stay creative. I breathe this stuff ya know, hahahaha.

Lol, indeed you do! How is BPM different from any of the other music you've put out?
Everything else I put out has always ran through someone's opinion of some sort. BPM is all me, and the bus did not stop to pick up anybody, hahahaha!

LOL! Did you have the chance to collaborate with any other artists on this mix-tape?
Yes!! Luke Boyed from "Luke & Q," Mia Zuniga, Chris Arron Smith, Eboni, Rob Porter,
AB, Scott Rose, Savadra, Micheal Jeffries, Anikol, Adrian Battle!!! And, Lyrica Anderson. Man these are all dope artists!

Wow, so you have a lot of people featured on BPM! Actually, "LivingTru" will be featuring Mia Zuniga really soon! Which track is your favorite, and why?A track called F-Train. Its just an AMAZING track that I wrote for Alicia Keys. I met her but, I didn't give it to her. I wanted to keep it, I'm so stupid hahaha!

Definitely not! Lol I heard F-Train, and I don't blame you for wanting to keep it! Lol, that song is crazy! I just have a couple more questions for you, and I'll let you go. What has been your biggest moment thus far?
It's a cross between my first video shoot years ago in L.A. with director Mike Taylor, Sheldon, Jesse Terro, and a few others, it was BIG!!! Or, it was hangin out with Beyonce Knowles.

Haha, I love how you just casually threw Beyonce Knowles out there, lol. So, as we come to the close of this interview Sterlen, I just have one more question for you. Do you have anything big and exciting coming up in the near future?
YES!! My "live" music video!!! My new mix-tape "Bpm" that I've been working on for about 2 years....And most of all I'm doing a big concert in San Francisco.

There you have it folks! Make sure you get the mix-tape when it drops, and also be sure to check back at LivingTru.com for more updates on Sterlen Roberts! Sterlen, it's been a pleasure speaking to you, thank you for your time!

Be sure to connect with Sterlen Roberts on all of his social networks!

Facebook
Youtube
Myspace

Check out Sterlen's new video "LIVE" Written, Produced and Edited by the man himself!

This is by far one of the best One-on-1 Exclusives that I’ve ever done! This edition features 24-year-old Richard Stevenson, Creator of the Radical Imagination Series. Richard is currently studying Education Policy, Leadership, and Advocacy at New York University, but is originally from Inglewood, California. Richard is a perfect example of what it means to be “LivingTru“, he is a personal development mentor, a motivational speaker and he is currently planning to develop a center for family, and making efforts to build up the communities in Watts and the Southeast Los Angeles area. Please read on for a very inspirational edition of ONe-On-1!

Richard it is truly an honor to have you! I’m a really big fan of your videos on Youtube, and I have a lot of questions for you!

So, give me the background on the "Radical Imagination Series." How did it come about?
The idea for the series was inspired by one of my favorite authors, "Robin D. G. Kelley. In his book, Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination." Kelley says that in order for a people to fight for freedom, justice, love, dignity, it must first be imagined. It must first be believed in order to manifest in our actions, our words, and our lives. I read it recently during a visit to LA, and really began to focus on how true to life this concept is. I’ve been fortunate enough to be surrounded by amazingly beautiful and talented artists and activists who inspire me on a daily basis.

As we gather formally or informally, we have these conversations about our futures, our dreams, our realities, and together we build upon foundations of common interest to see change in our world. However, with all the distractions these days, it’s pretty hard to cut through all the noise and find a genuine, consistent, and progressive voice. This series is my way of opening up these conversations and amplifying the inspirational voice of people I know will change the face of the world as we know it. Through documenting our conversations and highlighting the ways we use our talents to inspire change, I was fortunate enough to end up with a project that I love and am excited to share with the world.

That’s so awesome! That is exactly what the world needs, it’s so important to be reminded that our talents, though different can be used for a common purpose. What better purpose than changing the world? So, Richard one of the biggest changes we can make today is to really make it a point to empower our youth, what example would you like to set for them?
I’m striving to show the youth through my words and, most importantly, my actions that it’s possible and necessary to devote their lives to making our world a better place using their talents and greatest passions. I speak openly and honestly about our history as a people, the obstacles we are facing, and what it means to be an agent of change. I also stress the immense feeling of pride and love that it brings. I think that’s critical because it prepares them for whatever comes their way. Too often our youth are lied to. Their obstacles are glossed over and when challenges arise, they are left to question themselves and doubt their own greatness, brilliance, beauty, and worth. So when I work with young brothers and sisters, it’s always straight talk, backed with love and trust in them that they can make anything happen. I want them to go on knowing that we can have a rewarding and fruitful life by listening to our hearts and allowing our passions and desire for justice to drive our direction in life.

Such an awesome answer, I’m not going to talk too much Richard I’ll just keep going with the questions while you drop the knowledge (lol). What changes would you like to see in society as a whole, over the next 20 years?
With all the crimes against humanity in our global community, too many people are going hungry, too many go without shelter or clothes on their backs, too many lack self worth and self love. And sadly, many of us in privileged positions are part of the problem. Simply put, I want to see many revolutions in our coming decades, revolutions of the mind, of the heart, and of society. All too often people cringe at the word Revolution. Revolution simply means Change. I want to see change in our ability to determine our forward direction, our wealth, our land, our education, our entertainment, and our environment.

I want to see change in the way we think about and value our lives and each other. I’m looking to inspire change in all aspects of our lives just by getting us to imagine that a different way of living is possible if we first believe in it. I think it’s ridiculous how people who want progressive change are labeled radical. Change isn’t radical. What’s radical is the way in which countless people in our world are being forced to live without basic necessities and without respect. That’s radical. I hope to see a shift in the discussion around what change is needed in our world and I believe that this can be inspired through art and education.

Agreed! I take it that the "Radical Imagination Series" is your own creative way of spreading that message. Your art, so to speak. With that said, what is your ultimate goal for The "Radical Imagination Series?"
I’d like for these works to inspire conversations that grow into progressive social change. The series took absolutely nothing to start but a consumer camera, a little bit of time, and a vision. Plenty of people have great talent and brilliant things to say that inspire, so I hope some folks check the series out and say, “I can do that” or “I think so-and-so needs to be heard” and just continue the work of building collective consciousness through artful imagination and action. And of course draw attention to the masterful work being done by these artists. It feels great to go to the artists’ pages and see positive feedback from people that saw their episodes and commend them or reconnected with them because of the great work they are doing.

I totally agree, we need more people to be positive examples. Not just for the Youth, but for mankind as a whole, we all need to be inspired. Now, I’d like to touch on the creative process for a sec, what motivates and inspires you as far as your creative vision goes?

I am inspired by my experiences with so many dynamic people all at the first major crossroads in their lives. I’ve never been the person that was inspired by the polished professional with the classic success story. I’m more into learning about people during the unsure and most critical times of their lives. I need to see their reality, their challenges, and the decisions they make before they know anyone is watching. I am inspired when I can relate to someone’s humanity because it lets me know that even the most talented and dynamic of people are just like me and that I can be at least half as great as some of these people by embracing the things that make me who I am.

This can be seen in my series. While I try to produce films that look and sound good, I take care to leave in the pauses, the stutters, the silent searches within their hearts as they weave together their responses. It’s the difference between reciting that rehearsed answer we all expect, and documenting an artist’s first articulation of something genuine and uniquely personal.

Wow. Where does all this wisdom come from at only 24-years-old? (lol) You must’ve had great role models growing up, how does your family feel about your dreams and aspirations? Do they support you?
I am fortunate to have a strong and loving family to support me in everything that I do. My family has always told me to do what I love. They stress that by finding fulfillment in my life and career, I will be able to do great things. They’ve helped me not to value money above happiness, self worth, or justice. And at every fork in the road, they’ve trusted me to make the right decisions. My friends are synonymous with my family. Their level of love, trust, and accountability is something that fuels everything that I do. I have some amazing brothers and sisters in my corner that keep me going through all my highs and lows. We’ve been through a lot together. I also have a strong and beautiful woman in my life that has challenged me to be the best man that I can be. It’s like a Dream Team. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people in my life.

Beautiful! A great support system makes all the difference, regardless of what you choose to pursue. Speaking of family, were you raised in a religious household? What role does GOD play in your life?
I work to speak a language of love that I think allows me to understand and vibe with people regardless of their faith. Which is why art is so special to me. There’s something very spiritual about artistic expression that allows the human spirit to communicate beyond borders, language, space, and time. I believe that one can be spiritual without necessarily subscribing to any one particular religious institution. I have been a student of a few different faiths and traditions through study and conversation. In looking at the histories of Islam, Christianity, Rastafarianism, African Spiritual Science, and others, I’ve found similarities in the messages and the inspirational figures that embodied love and justice. In developing my spiritual self, I look to building a lasting connection with the creative and loving spirit I recognize in all people and as well as with the earth beneath my feet. I know that on some deeper level I am working to address the spiritual imbalance in our global community that comes from the vast injustices.

That’s deep, I’ve read up on different religions and I too have notice lots of similarities. I am Christian, but I respect everybody’s beliefs. I really admire your passion Richard, and like I said earlier it’s important for us as a people to inspire one another, so what advice would you give to someone who would like to spark a positive change, but doesn’t feel that they have the power to do it?
To that person who doesn’t believe in his or her own potential, I would say that no start is too small. Most of what I know of mass movements began in homes, churches, and schools, just small conversations that took root and changed the world. Begin with jotting some ideas down on paper; start an e-mail thread, feed that hunger with relevant history; start with small conversations among friends and family; and above all, know that you are in good company by fighting the good fight. As rough as it can be sometimes, you’re never alone. You’re carrying on a legacy and struggle that began generations ago. If we tap into that history, it’s hard to ignore just how powerful and beautiful we really are. There are a lot of poisons out there that cause us to hate and doubt ourselves. We have to constantly feed and nurture our spirit physically, mentally, and emotionally to reach our potential. This is the very reason why I developed the "Radical Imagination Series." These are everyday good folks that boldly met the challenge to not only develop their talents and spirits, but to use them in order to spark positive change. I believe that every single person has limitless possibility to change our world.

And I couldn’t have said it better myself! Thank you so much for your insight Richard! Hopefully we can keep in touch, and continue networking to spread the vision that we both share. Before we conclude the interview, I have two more questions for you. Do you have any new projects coming up in the near future, and what is your greatest ambition?
As far as my future plans, I want to have the opportunity to teach and organize in the Southeast Los Angeles and Watts communities. Specifically, I’d like to teach at a local school and develop a community center alongside family and friends. Essentially I want this center to serve as a place for family and community building. I’d love to be able to organize with brothers and sisters there to strengthen the schools, social services, and physical environment in the surrounding neighborhoods. Pretty soon I will be kicking my planning for all of this into full gear. I’m excited but also a little nervous at the same time. History has taught me that there is always a risk in standing up, in speaking out, and in doing the right thing. In the long run though, I know our work will help us to see a better tomorrow.

Richard, thank you so much for your time! I have to say that this is the most inspiring edition of ONe-On-1 that I’ve ever done. I appreciate your vision, and it’s so nice to speak with someone that shares mine! Hats off to you sir, (lol).

You guys be sure to subscribe to Richard’s Youtube channel, and follow him on Tumblr!

Check out this episode of the "Radical Imagination Series" by Richard Stevenson featuring one of my upcoming features Aaron Burleson!

This edition of One-on-1 features 25-year-old Music Producer Jabari “J Staffz” Bowry! I really appreciate the chance to be on your site. Are you kidding? It’s my pleasure (lol)! As you know, I have a lot of questions for you that I can’t wait to get into! So far starters, I know that you Produce beats, how long have you been doing that? I’ve been making beats since I was 15 year old.
So you’ve been at it for a few years now. Which genres of music influences your style? Who are some of your biggest inspirations when it comes to your work? I love classical music. I love cool chord progressions and string sections. I really love the production by The Neptunes as well.
Yeah, the Neptunes are dope. I wouldn’t have thought you’d be inspired by Classical music though. Especially since the beats you make are primarily hip hop. Do you play any instruments, and do you take part in any other aspect of the music business? I rap and sing. Not that I want to do them as a career. I make beats and I have my own studio so it’s easier for me. Recording other artists all the time taught me a lot. I've been playing piano for 18 years. I also play the drums.
Wow, you wear many hats. Now, I know that you’ve worked with Wiz Khalifa, G-Unit, Yung Berg, 40 Glocc, and The Cokeboys just to name a few. These are some really big names, how did these collaborations come about? Wiz Khalifa was about an hour from my house in the summer of 2009. So I went out to see him and Boogz Boogetz and we did 2 songs. They put Yung Berg on the second song. Some stupid bootleg producer from New York stole my beats and gave them to G-Unit and they ended up doing a bunch of records to my beats. I met one of the Cokeboys on twitter and just kept in touch and got the opportunity to work with the whole group eventually.
That’s crazy! I guess a negative turned into a positive as far as your beats getting stolen (lol). Everything else is either pure luck or God’s blessings, depending on how you look at it. Speaking of God, what role does he play In your life? I think he's completely responsible for where I came. He keeps pushing me further and further and providing me with better and better opportunities. I'm just glad I get to do something I like and make money.
That’s what’s up! So, do you have a strong support system behind you? How does your family feel about your success? My family is cool with it. Its basically their fault. My dad is a DJ and my mother sings so there’s always music in my house. I remember the day my dad heard my song on the radio. They love it.
That‘s really cool, having a supportive family means everything when you‘re pursuing your dreams. So, off the music for a sec, what kind of example would you like to set for the new generation of youth wanting to make it in the field of their choice, Music, or any other profession? Make sure they're serious about what they want to do and make sure they invest in themselves.
That’s a great answer! Usually if you’re scared to invest in yourself, you probably aren’t truly passionate about what you’re doing. Now, you’re quite established. How did you get so popular so fast? Lots of things. I put out songs every other day so I guess the word spread fast from just my work ethic. Investing in trips and going to parties to network and be around people who can push my music further then I can. Also having my music all in one place (www.ProducedByJStaffz.com) and getting my beats out to people who need the help by doing sales for cheap. Twitter helped a lot as well.
So you really just spread yourself around a lot! An obviously effective method. What has been your biggest moment so far? My biggest moment has probably been meeting all the artists that I looked up to. Its a toss up between that and hearing my beats on TV and Radio. I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing my music on the radio or on TV.
I don’t blame you, you work hard for that! Do you have any big and exciting new projects coming up in the new future? I just have my mixtape called The Staff Meeting 2 coming out. Its featuring Wiz Khalifa, G-Unit, Yung Berg, 40 Glocc, The Cokeboys and a few artists I'm working with, as well as other records I've done.
I’ll definitely be on the lookout for that! So my last question is a simple one, what is your greatest ambition? I REALLY want a Grammy. Or 2.
You’ll most definitely get there! Keep pushing the way that you have been, and I’m sure we’ll all be seeing you on that stage! Thank you so much for speaking with me, and please keep me updated on your success! Everyone be on the lookout for J Staffz new mixtape "The Staff Meeting 2", and be sure to connect with him on all of his social networks!
Twitter Facebook Youtube Official Website
