Jim Rutter Writes That Swarthmore Singer Strives for the Spotlight

The News of Delaware County writer Jim Rutter asks in his article that profiles Liz Seymour, "What do singers Joan Jett, Kid Rock and Strath Haven High School alumni Liz Seymour all share in common? Each started by selling their self-produced albums out of the trunks of their cars. And in this recessed economy, Seymour is proving that hope can still inspire young performers to take risks and follow their dreams."

He goes on to say that in the summer of 2008, Liz went to Range Recording Studios in Ardmore, PA to produce her debut album "Liz Seymour – That Thing Called Love" – a collection of love songs coming from the country, pop, and Broadway show tune arenas.

Mr. Rutter is quick to point out that a search of Google search on "Liz Seymour sings" turns up hundreds of hits because she has such an extensive website (LizSeymour.com), Facebook Profile (Liz Seymour's Fan Page on Facebook – Click Here! NOTE: If you do not have a Facebook account, you might not be able to see this page.), and MySpace page (Liz Seymour's MySpace Page – Click Here!).

Liz's website, Facebook page, and MySpace page are filled with videos, song clips from her CD and elsewhere, and information about Liz and her time in the studio. Liz is also prominently displayed on YouTube (Liz Seymour on YouTube – Click Here To See!) and other video sharing sites. Videos are produced by Liz's father (marketing expert Charles Seymour Jr) and by her fans.

Mr. Rutter goes on to say that Liz's new CD fits "her music theater background, featuring songs that display her three-octave high-soprano range (the girl can belt!), some infused with a pop and country sensibility. The title she took from a line in "Gimme, Gimme" a signature number in "Thoroughly Modern Millie," a role she'd still love to perform, and which she sung to win the Miss West Chester University competition in 2004.

"So why produce an album if she's still performing? Seymour says she 'felt inspired' by the success of her childhood friend (and fellow Player's Club alum) Josh Young, a Broadway star who released his own CD the year before and also appears in duet on Seymour's compilation. Plus, she 'didn't want to be left without a reminder, something I could show to my children and grandchildren.'"

Teaching is important to Liz. She is a sixth grade teacher at PA Leadership Charter School and teaches, directs, and choreographs for the Young People's Theatre Workshop at The Players Club of Swarthmore. She is a role model to her students, showing them ways to use their talents to enrich their lives.

"'I love singing, and if I could do that every day for an audience, it would be a blessing.'"

She wrote about Liz: "Liz Seymour is a TERRIFIC young singer, and it will be very exciting to watch the upward trajectory of her career. Alison Fraser."

Liz features a song from "The Secret Garden" on her CD: "How Could I Ever Know."

Fraser is a well-known American actress and singer who has appeared in concert at The White House, Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, The Brooklyn Botanic Garden, The Tisch Center for the Arts, The Folger Shakespeare Library, The Wilma Theatre, and The Players Club of Swarthmore.

She played Tessie Tura in the New York City Center production of "Gypsy" starring Patti LuPone under the direction of the legendary Arthur Laurents.

She was the first-ever recipient of Philadelphia's Barrymore Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of "The Blonde" in Marion Adler, Scott Wentworth, and Craig Boehmler’s film noir musical, Gunmetal Blues under the direction of Jiri Zizka.

She was the original "Trina" in William Finn's "March of the Falsettos" and "In Trousers."

Let's just say she knows something about Broadway, singing, and producing CDs.

Ms. Fraser has appeared as the flamboyant but clueless "Babs Caplan" on the award-winning Children's Television Workshop series, "Between the Lions" on PBS. She has appeared on "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" and "Third Watch."

"Forget counting carbs. Metropolitan Bakery’s new 15-month calendar offers up favorite recipes, “Metro Memories” and significant dates in the Philly baking institution’s scrapbook. Acquiring the secret behind Metropolitan’s legendary French berry roll—not to mention the chocolate-chip sour-cherry cookie—is reason enough to snag one of these."

And on the same page, they wrote this about Liz Seymour and her new CD, Liz Seymour – That Thing Called Love:

That Thing Called Love
Liz Seymour (Range Records, 2008, lizseymour.com)

"Whether tackling pop, country, Broadway show tunes or ballads, 25-year-old Liz Seymour is a talented singer loaded with theatrical flair. Her debut CD is devoted to love—good and bad. Sentimental types will want to keep a box of Kleenex handy for “Still Hurting,” which seems destined for a movie score. If you’re aching for a good cry, Seymour will help you get in touch with your big, sad self."

Recipes for the Good Life
Patti LaBelle
(Karen Hunter Publishing, 208 pages)

"Homegrown chanteuse Patti LaBelle knows how to open a show—and a cookbook. In Recipes for the Good Life, the sassy chef dishes the goods from the first chapter, enticingly titled “Hot ’n’ Spicy (Like Me!).” Dive into “Smack Yo Mama Seafood,” with quick-and-easy recipes for blackened grilled halibut, salmon with lemon-chili butter, and more. We’re partial to “Down-Home Stick-to-Your-Ribs Meals,” and its recipes for short ribs in brown gravy, and salmon and grits."

It's always impressive to receive a letter from your Congressman, especially when he packages it in the official blue folder with gold seal on the front proclaiming U.S. House of Representatives. And it arrives in a large manilla envelope with his "franking" privileges sending it through the US Postal System. Then combine that with the excitement of your CD release, and you can imagine how pleased Liz Seymour was to receive a well-thought-out letter from Congressman Joe Sestak.

Here's what Congressman Sestak wrote to Liz:

On the special occasion of the release of your new CD, I express my admiration for both your remarkable talents and your commitment to our community as you strive to provide aspiring young people interested in the arts with the opportunity to reach their potential.

As a native of Delaware County who has always called this area home, I join your family, friends and local fans in congratulating you on your latest accomplishment. We are inordinately proud to have you as a representative of Swarthmore, the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District, and the many organizations to which you have contributed. I want to additionally recognize your family, and specifically your parents Pamela and Charles, for instilling in you the value of service through their involvement in schools, churches, and recreation associations.

With the incredible accomplishments you have attained as a performer, I appreciate that you have maintained such a high level of enthusiasm for staying involved with the places and people that have helped you on your way. This participation includes teaching and directing at the Young People's Theatre Workshop, where you have played many lead roles, and becoming the fifth generation in your family to perform and direct at The Players Club of Swarthmore Theatre.

Unfortunately I have a prior commitment that precludes my attending your CD Release Celebration; however I would be honored to meet you and your family at a time convenient to you.

I look forward to following your impressive career for years to come and wish you the best in all of your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Joe Sestak
Member of Congress

.
