An Open Letter To Lee Coan

Today I'm going to write a letter to Lee Coan (the one on the left who isn't James May), the "Journalist" who wrote an article that was featured on the Telegraph's website today entitled "How old is too old to skateboard?"

This week we have already seen teen girls told not to bother trying to skate, because it might hurt, by a "Journalist" at Marie Claire, the article has now had the offending section edited due to a public backlash.

We are also being treated to the Selfridges' conspicuous consumerism take on skateboarding with their tacky/tasteless and exploitative "Board Games"promotional event, that featured such exciting and ground breaking items as this for a measly £75 or this travesty of an object for a poultry £1000. But I digress.

This post is all about my disappointment with Mr. Coan's article that I mentioned above. Last night I got home from skating at Stockwell and my wife mentioned that she had read the article and suggested that I should not (as nothing good would come of it). This is tantamount to putting me in front of a big red button marked "Do Not Push".

I heeded her advice, right up until this morning, when I noticed multiple friends posting a link to the article on Facebook, accompanied by some very strong reactions, and I cracked.

One big reason for my reading the article was the title "How old is too old to skateboard?"

This is a question I've asked myself in the past, more than once. I've spent many ours and weeks looking into what sport, activity or hobby I can move to when my body finally says "no, that's it your done with skateboarding", Martial arts, Cycling, and many more are currently in the running. So for a serious newspaper like the Telegraph to dig deep into their pockets to hire a freelance journalist to investigate this problem that is close to my heart, well it was obviously going to be a stellar piece of work.

Not so much.

What they did was, hire a guy who used to compile the Funny-news-stories/readers-letters section in lads magazine FHM. Who apparently skated for a year when he was 11, hurt himself a little bit, as a result gave up and... well that's it. This year of skating when he was eleven satisfied the editors at the Telegraph that he was the man for this exhaustive piece of investigative journalism.

The article seems to find it's genesis in the fact that a guy at his son's nursery happens to skate in his late 30's/early 40's.

Coan swings incoherently from suggesting skateboarding is the greenest mode of "Transport", to equating older skaters to Gary Barlow singing Nirvana covers, to continually repeating his assertion that older skaters look "ridiculous" "is not a good look". This all wrapped up in his singular viewpoint that everyone should stop skating when they are 11. Because that's what he did.

His piece shares a number of characteristics with the Marie Claire article, that incensed women and girls across the country and beyond, one is the sheer number of, what my friend Kev referred to as, "Clangers" that are present on both. The sign off paragraph being the most obvious. Here it is:

"So by all means skateboard, just know that you look ridiculous, and remember that you'll probably end up at some point sobbing in a some filthy A&E department."

How much did the Telegraph pay this idiot to dispense such incisive advice? It was definitely too much.

Maybe Coan regrets not persevering with skateboarding. Maybe when he tells his son "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" a wave of shame and regret washes over him as he realises that's what he should have done to get the most out of skateboarding. Maybe it's that deep sense of self loathing that drove him to write this hate ridden piece of tosh. I'm sure we will never know.

What I do know is what I want to say to Mr. Coan in my open letter to him. Here goes.

Hayes Skatepark And The Birth Of A Travesty

Concrete skateparks are now getting built at a fantastic, almost unbelievable rate. If I look back at the skateparks that existed in the south of England in the year I left school, I would barely need the fingers of a second hand. Now they are getting built all over the place. And surely this can only be a good thing. Well, not always.

Back in June of this year, so less than six months ago, some photos appeared on the Caught In The Crossfire site. Take a quick look HERE. The photos were of a new Wheelscape designed, concrete park in Hayes, Hillingdon, West London. This area needed something decent as this is one pocket of Greater London that seems to have been slow in getting anything built for skaters. The photos looks promising, as did the plans. Quite a large area, a good mix of transition and street and even a few bits I've not seen done before.

A visit to this park has been on my list ever since. My friend James had been to check it out and what he said did nothing to move the visit up my list. Even after all this time I couldn't just take James's word for it, I had to go and see for myself.

Overview

Two words. FUCK ME!! I have no idea who built this park, but they need to be outed, blacklisted, sued and given some form of electronic tag that delivers a life threatening electric charge if they go within 5 miles of a skatepark construction site.

I didn't think this shit could still happen. There is so much wrong with this place, coping that wanders all over the shop, riding surfaces that seem to have traffic calming measures built-in, seems in the pours that you could stick your finger in, pockets that should have a transition are kinked beyond belief, the shapes of some of the obstacles are almost avant-garde in their randomness. Some pieces are actually WONKY, fucking on the piss, sloping, not square, twisted...

Was it even finished?

As I was wandering around the park with my brain being hit by travesty after travesty it was hard to believe this place was completed only 6 months ago. It's already falling apart. It's probably going to be too dangerous to skate or derelict in less than 5 years.

I can't overstate how bad this place is. What makes it so bad is that it's purely down to the construction. It's not a badly designed park, and that just makes it worse. You want to skate it, but there are fucking booby-traps all over the place. So back we come to the question of "How do incompetent contractors get the work?" and "Who signs off on this kind of incompetence?" and what the hell kind of come-back do skaters of Hillingdon have to get it sorted out? They are all questions that I hope to get to the bottom of. If only to try to stop it ever happening again.

So watch this space, and watch yourself of you decide to try to skate this death-trap.

Time has a habit of flying by these days. It's been over a week since Johners and I got soaked to the skin at Stockwell only minutes after arriving for a relaxed skate, the day before the Annual Stockwell Jam.

The place was deserted and considering it was a bank holiday Saturday, it was strangely unnerving. Of course, the benefit was that we almost had the place to ourselves, apart from James McLean and Stevie T. fresh from his power move onto the roster of INSANE skateboards.

Some Horsing Around with James

You've probably noticed that as you go through life you will come across two types of people; those who are doers, and those who don't. James is a doer. Quite a good one too.

He's the man behind Horse Zine, a hand screened DIY and Skateboarding Zine that he's recently stepped up to produce his complete book that looks at all aspects of the DIY skateboard culture, which I'm sure he's saved me a copy, but more about that when he finally agrees terms to come and do an interview for the Lizard In A Lab Coat blog.

For now James is helping me drag out last Saturday's Kennington photos. I shot this in the middle of a little corner session that James and Questions where having, both coming at it from opposite directions and both getting the travelling tricks they were after. Unfortunately I didn't get Questions lip-slide but I stopped chatting long enough to grab James's Crail Slide.

I'll give you all the details of Jame's book and his other DIY projects when he has a chance to talk to [LIALC] ... James?

Danger Taking Advantage

After the recent long gaps between posts, I've decided to hold a couple of bits back. In reality I just didn't have time to sort them out quickly enough so when people started pestering to see photos I figured I'd make sure they got posted via this here blog.... everyone's happy.

Here's a little sequence of Alan "Danger" Christensen recreating a much loved line that has survived the re-vamp at Kennington. Mixing the old with the new is always a romantic proposition and this time it looks like it's paid off.

The original "DIY" quarter-thing had a lot of "Personality" and this recreation has managed to retain some of the original's unique characteristics, which the guys who did the work should get a good old pat on the back.

Of course I've yet to skate it, but that will happen soon enough.

A Slight Return to Kennington Sun

This happens with blogs, by that I mean it happens with THIS blog. I'm talking about the long gaps. Between posts. It's never deliberate, things just happen that way. I'm not going to go into the reasons for this most recent period of dead-air but it's a combination of injury and biblical weather, suffice to say I ain't been skating much.

Thankfully Jamie Harrison got my attention on friday with a message about having a skate to Celebrate the Hippy's (Johners) birthday, that he had kept pretty damn quiet, Johners that is. This kind of occasion would usually mean a session at Stockwell but a recently revamped Kennington had just been returned to a skateable condition thanks to the eventual installation of a drain. Yep, a drain, singular. I know, me too.

I'd just kind of imagined a bowl that big would need more than one, but that remains to be seen and so far THE DRAIN was doing what is paid for and the standing water, that had caused a certain amount of blood pressure increase in the South london Skate community, was gone. Now a distant memory.... so no real need to post this...

Since when did I need real reasons to do anything?

There are going to e many more conversations in the near future about brands like Nike and Converse getting involved in skateboarding and what that means to us in the short term and long term, if what I hear is true. More on that when it happens.

But for now, here are some photos documenting a brief explosion of sun in this dark and grim June.

I Put My Back-out Amidst A Photo Black-out.

I'm not a fan of the "text only" blog post. But there is a very good reason for this one. Secrecy, and lots of it.

I've talked about the etiquette of secret spots and DIY builds before and I'm not going to go over old ground here but, that's right, BUT it would seem that not all skaters in the UK read this blog, a revelation that rocked me to my core. How do I know this?

I know it because of our recent escapades at the new Secret Spot. A combination of a poor grasp of the etiquette and the introduction of the interwebs and associated social media has had blood pressures rising and stern words a-spoken.

I was going to bring you images of the spot depicting the leaps and bounds in construction that happened on Saturday and even more that went down on Saturday. Unfortunately we are now on a photo-blackout. Hence all the words.

So with no visuals for your eye-balls it leaves me only one course of action. To moan about my bad back. It'll get you too you know. I was very smug about back pain when I was younger, I was a very flexible teenager, as my golf swing proved, and bad backs were what lazy, inactive people got as karma for being lazy, inactivate and quite possibly fat. Now I know better.

My back's taken a beating over the years, like most skaters, just think of all the times you've landed on your coccyx. This Saturday I learnt that crouching on my knees hammering away at a concrete floor with a masonry chisel and a flimsy hammer for an hour or so can have an even more devastating effect on my back. Since the hard labour of Saturday I've been walking like the worst kind of incontinent pensioner and, of course, unable to skate.

This is where I finally get round to making my point. Skateboarding is amazing, we all know that. Building something to skate is even more amazing. Crippling yourself building something to skate is still amazing because pain is temporary. I'm gutted I won't be able to skate for a week or so but knowing what is in the works at the spot totally makes up for it. If my back goes once we're finish and it's ready to shred, I may well be less philosophical about it.

The Candle-light Session - Secret Spot

I've been meaning to get these up for a while now, got loads going on at the moment so it's only now that they make it onto the world wide web.

These shots were taken before the clocks went forward so we were arriving at te spotin the dark and having to get light any way we could. Head-torches, wind-up lamps, bicycle lights and candles were all being employed in a desperate attempt to light the place enough to skate it safely. We failed.

It was lit, a bit, just not enough. The bottom of the quarter-pipe had just been skimmed to meet the floor and the thin section at the floor started to crack up and finally big enough chunks were coming up to throw me into the face of the hip opposite. There really isn't a lot of time to take evasive action.

Johners and James kept on shredding until we'd finished the beers and the candles were fading.

Since these pictures were taken there have been big steps forward and hopefully I can get down to help out again soon. But for now you can all take a look at how things looked a week or so ago.

Nocturnal Bristol DIY Fun.

It's been a while since I made it down to Bristol for a skate. This time round it was a flying visit, driving down on Saturday morning and back on Sunday afternoon. After hanging out with the family Plews, it was time for Dave and I to head to Daveside, his new DIY spot.

Habgood had a face full of snot so it was just Me, Joxa and Dave that made it down to the amazing little spot. I'd seen a few photos but none of them really did justice to just how good this spot is. The location is amazing, right by a vast expanse of smooth tarmac with superb lights all the way along the side.

Dave had spotted the location ages ago and had tried to get people to get something started down there without success. Then he decided to take the bull by the hors and started building the first quarter with rubble, as soon it started to look like something was possible people started being available to help out. There have been hic-ups along the way, some loose lipped moments had the place open for business way before Dave would have liked, as is often the case with these things, and several bags of out of date concrete at a pound each later... you have what yu see in these photos.

The transitions are by no means perfect and the surface is showing signs of being a little to thin but Dave and the crew are going to resurface what's here before starting on the expansion programme. The concrete structure that they've build up against is like a gnarly gift from the skateboard gods. it's topped off with angle iron that has some heavy duty bolts, nails and rivets protruding out here and there, making for some interesting grinds. A few backside grinds had me tipped to the floor, who knows what stopped the grind but each time the effect was the same, me on the floor.

Dave and Joxa were having it. They both paid no attention to the holes and rough patches and just shredded for the couple of hours that we were there, luckily an ankle roll for me made me pick up the camera a bit earlier than usual.

Chapped Lips and Bad Backs - The Price of Living Your Dreams.

This time last year the Fox Spot was already starting to take shape. Now we know it's time is limited thanks to the redevelopment of Burgess Park and the inclusion of an Olympic size BMX track. The site of the Fox Spot is where the final corner before the home straight will be.

Continuing to add to the Fox Spot seemed stupid if it's only a matter of weeks away from destruction, so a new site was needed. Thanks to Johners' and James' keen senses, we have one.

There's no telling how long this will last so for now it's staying a SECRET location. But you can see how we got on with the fist afternoon of building below. Fingers crossed there are going to be many more to come.

Kingpin's Set In Stone - Finland, and a bit of extra Alv.

So that's it, this is the last in the series. This time it's Finland with a lot of rain involved. This place looks like it's going to be amazing as time goes on and more bits get added and seeing as they have a deal to stay on site for the next five years or so there cold be a lot to skate at the eviction party in 2017.

All of the edits have touched upon the hard work aspect of DIY skateparks, this one introduces the discomfort angle quite nicely too. The wet is shit at the best of times but when you are trying to get concrete to go-off against the clock with the rain coming down in bucket loads, well that just taking the piss. But that's what these guys had to deal with and I love that the muck and wet and cold feet aspect of this build really comes across.

The motivations behind this park are set out really clearly at the start. Basically no-one was going to do it for them, so the had to do it for themselves and it seems that the local government were happy to give the skaters temporary residency as long as it meant they didn't have to put their hands in their pockets. And so it began.

In the accompanying article, Alex irvine delivered a gem. It's great to get advice, tips, instruction on how to build, shape and finish concrete and even make your own tools but there is, as Alex points out, only one minimum requirement "That you can ride it"! The cover of the magazine is a portrait of Pontus Alv, who appears in this edit and who I'll be returning to in a minute, crouching in the pocket of an unfinished transition surrounded by re-bar, an illustration of where DIY can go. But Alex is pointing you towards the starting line. A handful of old bricks and mud, some pre-mixed concrete from Wickes/BnQ, a bucket, some water and a trowel and you are off and running.

Pontus talks about the smaller scale stuff in the edit and about there being a greater reward-to-work ratio from making something skateable out of a tiny pour/build and lets not forget, ten tiny pours later you're going to be looking at a lot of stuff to skate.

Staying with Pontus for a second there is aa new edit/interview with him doing the rounds today. In it he talks about his return to his homeland and his feelings about the skateboarding's ability to affect your emotional and mental well being. I can't remember if I've talked about this on here before but I've definitely had conversations with other skaters about the ability of skateboarding to almost act as a form of meditation. To take you out of the maelstrom of all the worries, stresses and anxieties you might be dealing with. Years ago when I was going through a weird patch I would go and skate the vert at Playstation and for the three hours I was there non-of that stuff would enter my mind and I was free of it while trying desperately not to land on my face. I know some don't like to talk about skating in these terms but I am all for it, the more we appreciate skateboarding for what it really means to people, as well as the purely fun aspect, the better.

The Life Saver Park that couldn't Save My Weekend Skate.

Last weekend I was all set to have a good skate at a park up in Derbyshire that is round the corner from a relative's house. I was amazed when it got built and I've only skated this Park in Wirksworth once. I remember being quietly impressed with the simple layout that puts something in every corner allowing you to keep a good flow going. Also the inclusion of a mini-ramp that is more than 3 feet tall and wooden bowled hip that makes for some fun.

Unfortunately on the Thursday night when we were due to set off up the M1 the weather reports were all about extreme weather warnings, freezing rain and 97 car crashes in the space of two hours. As soon as we decided to postpone the drive until the Friday morning it started to snow in London. Vindicated.

Either side of the M1 was like winter wonderland the whole way up. As we got closer to Derby a quick phone-call revealed that the snow had missed the Wirksworth area all together. Now I felt a bit sick as I'd left my board at home, resigned to the bad weather. My sanity remained intact though, because the week old snow had refused to melt away so it made no odds after all.

While taking these shots I noticed that qquite a few sections of surface plyu had recently been replaced others hat were marked fr replacement. So it looks like it's going to be kept in a skateable condition for a while yet, despite the Derbyshire climate.

One day I'll get to skate this little beauty again.

Kingpin's Set In Stone - Sheffield - with some added Casper

That's right, a day late again. Why fire yourself into the eye of the storm when you can sit back, ponder and let the calm settle before sending your ship of words floating out onto the sea of the interweb?

I know I promised to read the accompanying issue of Kingpin in order to have a little more insight into the motivations of those involved with these builds. I have of course been distracted by beer, snowfall, hanging with Harper, motorway driving and preparations for Valentine's Day. This is not so say I have failed completely, I have read the first couple of articles and was struck between the eyes by something Daryl said in his little interview.

Daryl's interview is mainly about the process of building and demystifying some of the technical aspects and explaining how you can do things on the cheap rather than having to buy all the expensive tools. Hidden in this interview was a little throw away remark that struck to the heart of what sets these places apart form others "it's your spot for you and your mates and not for a load of poxy kids on sc00ters". If that single sentence doesn't get you excited about the prospect of spending all of spring, all of summer and all of Autumn up to your elbows in concrete, nothing will.

As for any hi-brow dissection of the motivations and thought processes of the people involved in these builds you'll have to wait until the final installment.

What I can do is mention how pleased I was to see the skating of Casper Brooker in this Sheffield edition. I saw Casper at South Bank in the dying days of SEDJ and couldn't help but be a little jealous of his pop and power. Kingpin's Set In Stone - Brescia, Italia

Although it's a day late, I get to break my post S.E.D.J radio silence to bring you the next in the series of four films from Kingpin Magazine designed to inspire every skateboarder out there to get building.

This one features Daryl again, and Jerome Campbell who was out there getting his skills up and helping build what looks like a really good qiality DIY park. Going on a DIY fact-finding misssion to Brescia must be fun eh?

One of my favourite bits of this film is sseeing someone mixing some concrete in a wheelbarrow with a stick. It's that kind of image that helps bring these large projects back down in scale to something that me or you can handle. This is where I could wax lyrrical about what the project means to Sam Bailey and those involved but right now it would all be conjecture; so I'm going to read my copy of Kingpin from cover to cover and get back to you on that one. After all this is a project created by a magazine.

S.E.D.J. Day 31 - A Multi-Story Finale

OK I'll admit it. I didn't quite realise how hard Skating Every Day in January would be. The Planning, the skating, the blogging, the editing, the pain, the late nights and it's general all consuming grip on my brain. Having said that it could have been worse. The weather for January was pretty dry and I only really had two spanners in the works out of a total of 31 skates. I managed to get through all them on the same board, that still has a little life in it, that I'm swapping it out and keeping it as a memento of what has just happened.

The last skate of S.E.D.J. was back at the Kingston car park that has served as the dry, late night refuge through this challenge. It's got a couple of manual pads, some grindable curbs and that's about it. It's just like all those car parks all over this country that have sustained UK skateboarders through winters and wet summers for more than 3 generations. For that reason I'm perfectly happy to finish off S.E.D.J. here.

Sam and Dave were up for a skate despite the cold. The conditions were nice and dry and we had the place fully lit for the first half an hour so we got warmed up just in time for the majority of the place to be thrown into darkness. It still left the main two curbs in enough light to skate and we all concentrated having a fun roll late on a Tuesday night. If you were stood still for more than a couple of seconds you instantly felt the cold getting at you, which kept up our motivation.

Gradually we all started to slow down and I started to allow myself to think about the fact that I could stop skating and consider my challenge of Skating Every Day in January accomplished. Eventually we all drifted over toward the car and started chatting and I mentioned that I was done for the night an Sam produced a bottle off Stella from his bag for me to celebrate with, a nice touch I thought. Thanks for that Sam.

So that was it. From about 2-3 skates a month before Christmas to 7 skates a week for the month of January. It's got me out on my board more that's for sure. By skating has got a bit better in some ways but the constant fatigue in my legs did hold me back in some ways, my pop definitely suffered because of the tired legs. I learned a couple of tricks, re-instated some others and skated quite a few places that I had yet to make a trip to. I got skate with my mates on all but about three occasions which was unexpected. The response to this has been amazing and I can't thank people enough for their words of encouragement and diagnoses of insanity.

I really want to thank the following people for coming out and Skating, Johnners from Day 1, Martyn Thomas, Sam Noble, Phil Proctor, David Line, Matt Gold, Jim Thompson, Dave Reading, Marcus Adams, Kev McKeon, Jeremy Donaldson, Jamie Harrison, Alex Irvine, French, James Hall, Jotham, Adrian Downie, James Mclean, Jack T. You lot made a potentially nightmarish challenge a fucking good laugh.

I reserve the most important thank-you to one Rachel Madill, my wife. In the same way that I didn't know what this was going to be like, neither did she but she supported me completely through the whole thing and has never made me feel like I shouldn't or couldn't do it. I couldn't have done it with out her, it's that simple.

Would I do it again? Not fucking likely. Once is enough and it has shown me that the dream of skating every day can become a bit much and letting ankles and backs have a rest for a couple of days is never a bad thing.

Kingpin's Set In Stone - Berlin

Now that there is a lull in the S.E.D.J. activity, until the final post, I thought I'd better post this little beauty.

You may have already seen it as it was released by Kingpin Magazine yesterday but I'm determined to do my bit to get it seen by as many skateboarders and non-skaters as humanly possible. Why? Because it's a forward thinking project that showcases what can be done with a little time, effort and , I won't lie to you, money.

I was lucky enough to be involved in some of the building at last years Fox Spot that featured on this blog quite a bit (and again below). I got to work with Daryl and pick-up as much from him as I could, which was easy as Daryl has no problem at all in sharing his knowledge. As a result I could now go away and build something of my own, Johners did immediately, adding elements to the Fox Spot as a one man building team.

DIY is not a dark art. It's the same as most things in life; some basic rules and some key techniques that once you know them a whole world of possibilities is opened up to you. That's why I'm so pleased to see Set In Stone come to fruition. Imagine if everyone in your crew knew how to build like these guys, you would never run out of new things to skate.

Keep your eyes out for the next 3 of the series of four, don't worry, I'll point them out if you miss them.

S.E.D.J. Day 30 - Solo Lunch-Time Skate at Meanwhile Gardens

Another cold day in London and another lunch-time skate mission for Skate Every Day in January. It was either going to be Meanwhile Gardens or Meanwhile II and only the weather would decide. I was happy that it had stayed dry over the weekend into today meaning Meanwhile Gardens was on.

Arriving at work today on the motorbike I was all set to park round at the back of our building and then I remembered what happened last week, with the Vans blocking me in, and decided Soho Square was the "Better safe than sorry" choice. Fucking good thing too, seeing as when I was walking to my bike at about 1.00pm I saw a van jammed into the entrance of the Mews that would have blocked me in again. I felt quite smug as I walked past and jumped on my bike and off without any delays, and with no urges to kill anyone.

Although I've generally found these lunch-time skates quite stressful, today I really enjoyed the ride up to Westbourne Park, leaving Soho heading down to Piccadilly, round Hyde Park Corner, Park Lane and off down to Notting Hill. The sun was out and maybe I was a bit more relaxed knowing this was the last one of S.E.D.J. For whatever reason it struck me how lucky I am to live and work in as amazing a city as London and how this city has really helped me in getting this far with my challenge.

When I got to the bowls they were empty; not a huge surprise. The lack of company was not a problem today, I knew what I was there for and it was just to have a relaxing roll around and do a load of backside disasters in the two top sections off the bowls, in an attempt to get a bit more consistent with them. While skating I became very aware of the aging that's taken place here. Last summer was all about the fox spot so I didn't skate here too often and maybe that's why the change seems more drastic but there are a lot more dodgy bits to keep an eye out for. God knows what the chances of repair are?

Towards the end of my skate Awadh was walking past and came into the park for a chat, he was heading off to check out Clapham, it's a shame he hadn't set out half an hour earlier and we could have had a skate, there aren't many people who are more fun to watch skating Meanwhile Gardens than Awadh. Back to skating, a few more Back-Ds and I was done.

Day 30 was never going to set the world on fire but I did put it to good use and avoided a potential Van-blockade disaster. Having ticked this one off the calendar I only have one more day to go, that's right only one left.

The final skate, Day 31 is going to be back in the same kind of surroundings that my skateboarding life began, a Car Park. Part of me feels a little disappointed that it'll be ending in a whimper rather than a huge fanfare and another part of me thinks that it's fitting because is representative of real skateboarding and how it's been done on this country for decades. Tomorrow night from about 9:45pm I'm heading to the Sainsbury's Car Park in Kingston to finish what I started and to have fun riding my skateboard. If you fancy a slice of the good-times you know where to be.

S.E.D.J. Day 29 - Day of Falling Over at Stockwell

What a perfect day for falling over. If you ride a skateboard through the winter there is a temperature barrier that once colder than this arbitrary threshold, slams hurt at least 25% more than at warmer temperatures and concrete is 10% harder. FACT!

Weirdly it seems you are also more likely to fall over, at least that was the evidence gathered from Day 29 of Skate Every Day in January at the hallowed Stockwell Skatepark. It seemed like everyone was hitting the deck, and some were awesome. So much so that I missed one of Alex's because I was picking myself up off the floor at the time. It wasn't quite carnage but more a skateboarding comedy of errors and I'm pretty sure nobody got hurt, badly I mean.

The thing that struck me on my ride home was just how much worse it could have been. I had at least two close calls with Alex, 2 with Martyn, 1 with Johners, Josh almost got me twice and Zombie only the once, it was like someone had sent the Red Arrows up pissed and blindfolded. The rest of the tumbles were self inflicted mishaps that happen when your having fun on your skateboard.

Between all the collisions and rolling around on the floor everyone seemed to be having a good laugh. The crew at the park was a quality collection with appearances from types such as Johners, Zombie Stu, Will, Alex, Martyn, Ewen B. , Josh, Jack, Pete H., Jamie "Horse Zine" Hall and others.. and we even had food laid on buy Johners and Dave and helpers; BBQ's in January are awesome, if only for the ambient heat that's available if you hang out chatting with the chef.

I had a great day down at Stockwell for Day 29, the last weekend day of SEDJ. Great people to skate with thanks to Zombie for making the trip specially; and to everyone else who came down to help make Day 29 a really fun skate.

Day 30 is going to be the last of the Lunch-time Smash'n'Grabs: it's another Meanwhile Gardens if dry and Meanwhile II if wet. I'll be at one of those places at 1.15pm.

S.E.D.J. Day 28 - Damp Concrete and Other Old Friends

It's often counter productive to be too picky about things especially in the world of skateboarding. Spots that aren't perfect can be written off by some, missing out on all the fun that conquering unskateable terrain. The skatepark that is notoriously busy at weekends can be sometimes be surprisingly quiet or made to be so if enough of you turn up en-masse. And in this country the damp skatepark or bowl can be shunned when a bit of ingenuity and effort can get you something skateable.

Arriving at Tolworth for the skate for Day 28 of Skate Every Day in January brought back all those memories of old soggy news papers, sacrificed t-shirts, DIY cardboard squeegees and wet feet trying to get places dry enough to skate. On this occasion it was just a case of a bit of damp at the bottom of the bowl and a couple of puddles. Nothing the broom couldn't sort out.

The choices for this skate had been narrowed down to either Sunbury or Tolworth based on location, the deciding factor was purely how busy they'd be. Tolworth won out purely because it seems to be the forgotten treasure of South London Skate Spots; I've only ever arrived there to see other skaters there on 1 occasion and the scooterists and BMXicans are few and well behaved. If you've only got a window of an hour and a half this is the shit you have to take into consideration. A month long of daily skate logistics takes it's toll just as much as the actual skating believe me.

Day 28 was the second one where i was lucky enough to be skating with Howie who was down from Liverpool. Me, Sam and Howie had made it to the e bowl and after a quick sweep we decided it was just about dry enough to skate although one of my lines into the capsule section was wet enough to make me skid out a couple of times, Howie had a few twitches too but we got away with it. Howie was another first time visitor to Tolworth who left with a good feeling about the place, I'll have to get him back in the summer to skate it properly.

S.E.D.J. Day 27 - A Return to The South Bank

I'm putting Day 26 behind me and moving on. Parking my bike on SOHO square was the first step in avoiding any repeat performance of getting blocked in. Knowing that I had to pop over the rive to the South Bank was another source confidence that Day 27 of SEDJ would go off without a hitch. Today was going to be a bit of a re-union with one of my oldest mates Howie. We used to skate together back when we were about 14 onwards and the South Bank was always the first spot one on our regular trips to London with the rest of the Wokingham crew. So skating there with Howie again, even for half an hour, was going to be good lunch break.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that this is the bit were I start telling you how it all went wrong and how I'm on the verge of murdering the bastards responsible.. but not this time.

Ten minutes over Westminster Bridge and I'm underneath the Royal Festival Hall, Howie is already there and Martyn turns up seconds after I've said hello to H. Bikes locked, helmets and jackets stashed and off we go. I was all about the banks, they're are definitely my favourite thing about what is left of the original undercroft. Martyn was hitting the blocks and Howie was sharing it out all over the place. We were all loving having the undercroft almost to ourselves with only another four guys skating and was starting to bring back memories of the first time we ollied the seven, not that I was bout to throw myself down them on this visit.

As with all these lunch time skates it was all over too quickly but after this there is only one left on Monday so I could handle going back to work: plus the fact I was going to be skating with Howie again on Day 28 at Tolworth. Thanks to Howie and Martyn for coming out and keeping me company.

S.E.D.J. Day 26 - Done Over By White Van Man.

Another lesson learned today. If I have a lunch-time smash'n'grab session planned, do not park in the mews at the back of our building. Because twats like the guys driving these two vans will work together to block the entrance as comprehensively as possible making it impossible to get my motorbike out and head to the spot of the day. not only that but arguing the toss with them lost me too much time so I couldn't even go for a street skate around Soho and the West end... oh and my frame of mind was more one for slashing tyres than shredding streets.

When I'd finally calmed down I realised that I could get to the Kingston Car Park later that night. I sent the e-mail with the change to the plan, sent texts to car park stalwarts but everyone had other commitments or plans; meaning this was going to be the first official solo skate of S.E.D.J. I didn't really have a problem with that. It was Day 26 after all so I was due a bit of a disaster and at least I had an alternative to the planned skate.

One thing that did pop into my mind about half an hour in was, how am I going to show this on the blog. Shots of car parks are not really that interesting. As you can see above. Last time I got away with filming a nose manual, I suppose I'll have to film something again. This is starting to drift into "vanity-blog" territory. I know people don't want to see photo's or footage of me skating so I've gone to great lengths to minimize any self exposure and I definitely keep my face well hidden. This was made all the easier by the lights getting turned out about 5 minutes after I'd remembered I needed some content for the blog.

Day 26 was a day of contrasts, an emotional roller-coaster of anticipation, annoyance, anger, frustration, acceptance, hope, determination, fun and mild embarrassment. Despite the set-backs I got the skateboarding bit of the day sorted and another day in January is ticked off as a success.

Day 27 is a lunchtime visit to the Undercroft, The South Bank. I can't even remember the last time I skated there but I'm looking forward to going back... I'll be there from 1.15pm.

S.E.D.J. Day 25 - Snakes on a Ramp, Must be Wednesday Night at Playstation.

Come on brain, don't let me down now. I can handle the physical knocks and and aches but if the brain goes then I'm sunk. All it will take is for me to get my days mixed up, think that I'm skating that night, miss my lunch-time window and that Rach is out past 11 meaning I can't get out to skate before the clocks strike twelve and I turn to a pillar of salt and the S.E.D.J. dream comes to a rather pathetic end.

That is one possible outcome and there are thousands of versions similar. Tonight was just one such version. Unfortunately you, dear reader, are the unsuspecting victim of this cerebral meltdown.

Earlier today i needed to grab some images off the Lumix for the last blog entry, I managed to leave the camera on after downloading the shots. So when I reach into my bag while a t Playstaion/Bay66 tonight I spot the battery is already dangerously low. So low in fact that i get two useless frames before it dies. See, nothing groundbreaking, just forgetting to unplug the bloody camera. As a result YOU have to put up with these shockingly bad photos to the guys at the session, who were: Johners, Irish Steve, Jamie, Alan, Jack, Awadh, Jotham and Kev.

We spent the first half of the session having a Wembly Gap session over on the street course and then the obligatory snake session on the mini. I couldn't shoot any actual skating as the HTC Phone I've got is worse than useless in that regard. Despite the camera fuck-up I'm happy with Day 25, I had a good skate, got backside 180's up the gap again and it looks like I'm going to get to bed before one o'clock.

Day 26 is another quick lunch-time visit to Meanwhile II/Royal Oak, aiming to be there for 1.15pm for a half hour skate and then it's back to work. You know the drill, if you are about....

S.E.D.J. Day 24 - Robotic Monotonous Car Park Training

S.E.D.J. is obviously a skateboarding based challenge. But to be honest a ot of the real challenges lie in the not skateboarding side of things. Timetableing being the major one and physical maintenance and recovery and, believe it or not, the blogging bit all make demands.

Day 24 was a perfect example of that. Tuesday's are the day I pick up baby Harper from childcare, so once I'd collected her and got her home, play with her for a little while, which actually means desperately trying to distract her from grabbing all the stuff she's not allowed to, which is basically all the expensive/interesting/dangerous stuff. Next up is bath time, one word.. awesome. Then it's feed, brush her two teeth and bed. So now that she's in bed it was time to feed myself and cook-up some purées for Harper's lunch, so it was all chopping, steaming, blending for a while, then I had my food just as Rach get's back home. Then I get my shit together and head to Kingston to meet up with Sam at the covered car park.

The whole place had that covering of dampness again, I don't mind it really because I kind of have to skate, Sam on the other hand is under no such obligation. Sam's been out for almost all of these Kingston Training sessions and was still out skating with me in a damp car park putting his board as risk of sogginess despite having only snapped his last board at the weekend. Hats off to Sam.

After the weekend my ankle, the bad one, has been in a fairly bad way, put that together with a damp car park what do you get? Nose manual and no-comply session that's what. Yep, it was literally that, Nose-manual attempt, No-comply, Nose-manual attempt, No-comply, Nose-manual and repeat. I did weaken and put some street slides in there just to take advantage of the slidey surface and the odd curb grind but mostly Nose-manual, No-comply, Nose-manual, No-comply, Nose-manual, No-comply.....

It doesn't quite capture the grace of the No-comply does it?

After my breakthrough with the Nose-manual last week there was no way I could stop skating before I made at least one over the prescribed distance. Nose-manual, No-comply, Nose-manual, No-comply.... and repeat, again. Perseverance paid off and I started holding them long enough to cover the distance I'd set myself. Then another problem. What to put on the blog to illustrate this little training session. I tried a couple off my-space style shot's of a No-comply with the camera held at arms length while attempting to get pre-focus sorted and shutter firing perfectly in time with my attempt. Then I had the idea of filming my success on the Nose-manual front. Of the four attempts I filmed, I made two. I suspect I could get obsessed with nose-manual you know.

By this now time was starting to run-out and I heard a text arrive on my phone. It was Rach letting me know that Harper had woken up crying and had been doing so for the last hour. Off home I went. Rach had been looking after Harper all through the night before so tonight was my turn. She was consoled and finally snuffling herself to sleep by 1.00am. Then it was time to wash-up, edit video, do my physio and stretches and get the hell to bed. The skating was the easy bit.

Day 24 has been done. I favored the robotic monotonous training (RMT) style for this one and it feels like it's paying off. Thanks to Sam for keeping me company on such an uninspiring night.

Day 25 is Playstation/Bay66 evening session. I'll be taking this one fairly easy and my even apply the RMT style to learning/cementing a couple of tricks on the mini, if I remember. If you are about, come and have a skate.

S.E.D.J. Day 23 - Stockwell Skate By Street-Lamp Light.

I'm going to be quick again tonight. I need to get to bed before midnight for once. I was knackered anyway but after only 2 hours sleep last night, thanks to a sick and yet strangely mischievous baby, I'm on my knees.

Today was a nice change from the last couple of Mondays' lunch time skates. This time I met up with Adam (Johners) at Sockwell for an hour. We were the only two skaters there. Adam and I share a strange enjoyment of skating Stockwell in the dark in winter; The Park is lit much better than you would think and it's always quiet. The cold is normally the big problem but I think we all understand that you are rarely cold while actually skating.

You may have noticed that I'd left my digital compact camera at the office by accident so was reduced to my phone. What a pile of crap; oh well. I got the photo's I needed. Day 23 was a good laugh. Hacking it around the park with Johners, having a chat and generally having a nice relaxed skate. Thanks Adam.

Tomorrow is Day 24. Tomorrow is a Tuesday...... so that means a Kingston Car Park Training session. Hopefully see you tomorrow from 10:00pm.

S.E.D.J. Day 22 - South London Street Skating Eutopia.

I don't see myself as a worrier. I'm generally pretty good at figuring out the stuff that is out of my control and letting fate or the universe or whatever, sort things out. Planning where to skate over the last three weeks has affected my sleep, being able to squeeze in the lunch-time skates has definitely affected my heart rate and blood pressure. Now that I'm only 9 nine days away from the end of Skate Every Day in January I was starting to get a bit obsessive. As with many things in life, sometimes things just happen for a reason. Like today.

We had no real plan other than meet up at Elephant and Castle and go find some street spots. On my ride to E&C the sky looked a little dark and for a split second I thought rain was going to stop play but that feeling passed. As soon as I hooked up with Adam, Ivan, Jamie, Alex and Martyn, any stress-head tendencies disappeared and all I had to worry about was staying on my board, shooting some crappy photos, missing Alex's make on his blunt-slide transfer to grind while on filming duty and laughing a lot.

You don't need a blow by blow account of what happened. It's getting late, I'm completely done-in and writing this is sapping the very last remnants of energy from my brain. Let's just say that Day 22 raised the bar. Skating a real street spot that was so much more fun than it originally suggested and doing it with some of the best people out there.

Day 23 is going back to Stockwell. It's an after work visit this time, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. If you are around I'll hopefully see you there.
