My opinion is that it is - I am basing my decision on what is happening in my life. I have money in several financial instruments with varying risks. I do have money when Erap was still President, but the financial investments I can access at that time are limited. For a country to improve its economy, the people should have access to investment vehicles they can earn passive income from.

Now, you don't need a couple of millions of pesos to earn a good return in a time deposit account.

When my Business Ethics teacher, MBA, asked my class to watched 'The Corporation' to give us an insight on how corporations behave toward their environment, I had no idea what 'The Corporation' was all about.
I did gain insight - although, I still think that the movie is biased. It is bias in the sense that the film creators are vent in showing the world the wrongs that corporations, for profit corporations did and are doing.

It is still a good watch though. An eyeopener.

This is the film's synopsis from its Web site:
"

Among the 40 interview subjects are CEOs and top-level executives from a range of industries: oil, pharmaceutical, computer, tire, manufacturing, public relations, branding, advertising and undercover marketing; in addition, a Nobel-prize winning economist, the first management guru, a corporate spy, and a range of academics, critics, historians and thinkers are also interviewed.

A LEGAL "PERSON"

In the mid-1800s the corporation emerged as a legal "person." Imbued with a "personality" of pure self-interest, the next 100 years saw the corporation's rise to dominance. The corporation created unprecedented wealth but at what cost? The remorseless rationale of "externalities" (as Milton Friedman explains, the unintended consequences of a transaction between two parties on a third) is responsible for countless cases of illness, death, poverty, pollution, exploitation and lies.

THE PATHOLOGY OF COMMERCE: CASE HISTORIES

To assess the "personality" of the corporate "person," a checklist is employed, using diagnostic criteria of the World Health Organization and the standard diagnostic tool of psychiatrists and psychologists. The operational principles of the corporation give it a highly anti-social "personality": it is self-interested, inherently amoral, callous and deceitful; it breaches social and legal standards to get its way; it does not suffer from guilt, yet it can mimic the human qualities of empathy, caring and altruism. Four case studies, drawn from a universe of corporate activity, clearly demonstrate harm to workers, human health, animals and the biosphere. Concluding this point-by-point analysis, a disturbing diagnosis is delivered: the institutional embodiment of laissez-faire capitalism fully meets the diagnostic criteria of a "psychopath."

MINDSET

But what is the ethical mindset of corporate players? Should the institution or the individuals within it be held responsible? The people who work for corporations may be good people, upstanding citizens in their communities, but none of that matters when they enter the corporation's world. As Sam Gibara, Former CEO and Chairman of Goodyear Tire, explains, "If you really had a free hand, if you really did what you wanted to do that suited your personal thoughts and your personal priorities, you'd act differently."

Ray Anderson, CEO of Interface, the world's largest commercial carpet manufacturer, had an environmental epiphany and re-organized his $1.4 billion company on sustainable principles. His company may be a beacon of corporate hope, but is it an exception to the rule?

MONSTROUS OBLIGATIONS

A case in point: Sir Mark Moody-Stuart recounts an exchange between himself (at the time Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell), his wife, and a motley crew of Earth First activists who arrived on the doorstep of their country home. The protesters chanted and stretched a banner over their roof that read, "MURDERERS." The response of the surprised couple was not to call the police, but to engage their uninvited guests in a civil dialogue, share concerns about human rights and the environment and eventually serve them tea on their front lawn. Yet, as the Moody-Stuarts apologize for not being able to provide soy milk for their vegan critics' tea, Shell Nigeria is flaring unrivaled amounts of gas, making it one of the world's single worst sources of pollution. And all the professed concerns about the environment do not spare Ken Saro Wiwa and eight other activists from being hanged for opposing Shell's environmental practices in the Niger Delta.

The Corporation exists to create wealth, and even world disasters can be profit centers. Carlton Brown, a commodities trader, recounts with unabashed honesty the mindset of gold traders while the twin towers crushed their occupants. The first thing that came to their minds, he tells us, was: "How much is gold up?"

PLANET INC.

You'd think that things like disasters, or the purity of childhood, or even milk, let alone water or air, would be sacred. But no. Corporations have no built-in limits on what, who, or how much they can exploit for profit. In the fifteenth century, the enclosure movement began to put fences around public grazing lands so that they might be privately owned and exploited. Today, every molecule on the planet is up for grabs. In a bid to own it all, corporations are patenting animals, plants, even your DNA.

Around things too precious, vulnerable, sacred or important to the public interest, governments have, in the past, drawn protective boundaries against corporate exploitation. Today, governments are inviting corporations into domains from which they were previously barred.

PERCEPTION MANAGEMENT

The Initiative Corporation spends $22 billion worldwide placing its clients' advertising in every imaginable - and some unimaginable - media. One new medium: very young children. Their "Nag Factor" study dropped jaws in the world of child psychiatry. It was designed not to help parents cope with their children's nagging, but to help corporations formulate their ads and promotions so that children would nag for their products more effectively. Initiative Vice President Lucy Hughes elaborates: "You can manipulate consumers into wanting, and therefore buying your products. It's a game."

Today people can become brands (Martha Stewart). And brands can build cities (Celebration, Florida). And university students can pay for their educations by shilling on national television for a credit card company (Chris and Luke). And a corporation even owns the rights to the popular song "Happy Birthday" (a division of AOL-Time-Warner). Do you ever get the feeling it's all a bit much?

Corporations have invested billions to shape public and political opinion. When they own everything, who will stand for the public good?

THE PRICE OF WHISTLEBLOWING

It turns out that standing for the public good is an expensive proposition. Ask Jane Akre and Steve Wilson, two investigative reporters fired by Fox News after they refused to water down a story on rBGH, a controversial synthetic hormone widely used in the United States (but banned in Europe and Canada) to rev up cows' metabolism and boost their milk production. Because of the increased production, the cows suffer from mastitis, a painful infection of the udders. Antibiotics must then be injected, which find their way into the milk, and ultimately reduce people's resistance to disease.

Fox demanded that they rewrite the story, and ultimately fired Akre and Wilson. Akre and Wilson subsequently sued Fox under Florida's whistle-blower statute. They proved to a jury that the version of the story Fox would have had them put on the air was false, distorted or slanted. Akre was awarded $425,000. Then Fox appealed, the verdict was overturned on a technicality, and Akre lost her award. [For an update on the case see Disc 2 where we learn that at one point, Jane and Steve became liable for Fox's $1.8 million court costs, later to be reduced to $200,000.]

DEMOCRACY LTD.

Democracy is a value that the corporation just doesn't understand. In fact, corporations have often tried to undo democracy if it is an obstacle to their single-minded drive for profit. From a 1934 business-backed plot to install a military dictator in the White House (undone by the integrity of one U.S. Marine Corps General, Smedley Darlington Butler) to present-day law-drafting, corporations have bought military might, political muscle and public opinion.

And corporations do not hesitate to take advantage of democracy's absence either. One of the most shocking stories of the twentieth century is Edwin Black's recounting IBM's strategic alliance with Nazi Germany-one that began in 1933 in the first weeks that Hitler came to power and continued well into World War II.

FISSURES

The corporation may be trying to render governments impotent, but since the landmark WTO protest in Seattle, a rising wave of networked individuals and groups have decided to make their voices heard. Movements to challenge the very foundations of the corporation are afoot: The corporate charter revocation movement tried to bring down oil giant Unocal; a groundbreaking ballot initiative in Arcata, California, put the corporate agenda in the public spotlight in a series of town hall meetings; in Bolivia, the population fought and won a battle against a huge transnational corporation brought in by their government to privatize the water system; in India nearly 99% of the basmati patent of RiceTek was overturned; and W. R. Grace and the U.S. government's patent on Neem was revoked.

As global individuals take back local power, a growing re-invigoration of the concept of citizenship is taking root. It has the power to not only strip the corporation of its seeming omnipotence, but to create a feeling and an ideology of democracy that is much more than its mere institutional version."

Opinion of an Outraged Citizen

Few years ago, when Antonio Trillanes and several other soldiers formed Magdalo and laid siege on the nation, I was outraged. Now, that this man, hiding behind his soldier-image, is again waging a personal war, I am outraged.

First, I was outraged during the Oakwood mutiny, as it will always be referred to in the nation's history - societies exist because of the an unwritten rule that us, members, obey rules, otherwise a society can not exist. If everyone has the option to wage a personal war against the government or an entity for any slight, imaginary or real, then everyone will. I have no respect for any man or woman who acts beyond the boundaries of rules. Although, I admit that sometimes rules need to be broken if such rules are outdated and no longer serve their purpose. However, I can't stop thinking that what Trillanes and the rest of his group are doing are mere expression of vanity.

Second, how dare this man invoke 'the people' in his propaganda. Tell me, where are the people in this farce? The people are laboring for tonight's bread while Trillanes is inside Manila Peninsula where 'the people' had never been in or will they ever be in. What a load of crap!

When will this man stop his madness? Clearly, he just want to get out of jail, and yet again, cheat the system. Who wouldn't be outraged with the gall of this man for breaking the rule and not pay for it? A murderer, a thief, a rapist incarcerated in our jails are more dignified - they, at least, are paying for what they did and this soldier will probably not.

Portfolio Update September 30, 2007

Y'all! this is how my portfolio fared this past month. Since I started trading in July, I now have P1,658.41. Not so much, but if annualized it's a return of 678.79%!You can take that to the bank, I guess :)

So here is my portfolio. It now has something close to P34,000. I've said that by the end of October, I want my portfolio to be P100,000. If I include my special savings account and other bank accounts, my portfolio is almost to that level, however the P100,000 refers to my stock portfolio. I still have a month to go guys :)

Ayala Corp to buy back P2.5B worth of shares

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippines' biggest conglomerate, Ayala Corp., said Tuesday it will buy back up to P2.5 billion worth of common shares, or about 1.3 percent of the company's current market capitalization, to boost its stock price.

The buyback program "sends a positive signal of the company's confidence in its own shares," Ayala Corp told Manila's stock exchange. The company did not say when the buyback will start.

It said the program will not affect the company's prospective and existing projects and investments, including its ongoing liabilities management program.

Ayala Corp's listed units are Globe Telecom Inc., Ayala Land Inc., Bank of the Philippine Islands and Manila Water Co. Inc.

At 9:43 a.m., Ayala Corp. shares were steady at P462.50. – Enrico dela Cruz

for me there is no contest between the two. after all, their goals are the same - wealth accumulation for the investor. where one is more comfortable, then, by all means, use that method.

for me i use a blend of both. as a matter of fact i am waiting for a friend's email. he promised to send me some stock advices which i probably BUY next week. i have a couple of thousand of investible funds.

i am still learning. i think that my life is a continuous learning process. i want to know random walk theory, technical analysis, yadda yadda yadda.

this is a random thought, unorganize as always.

A LIFESTYLE writer, who was earlier reported to have been hounded out of her job after she wrote a travel piece many readers found insulting to millions of Filipinos who work abroad, has resumed writing.

Malu Fernandez had earlier said that she quit her job as a columnist at the Manila Standard Today newspaper and People Asia magazine after her article "From Boracay to Greece !" provoked international outrage.

However, an article titled "Unseen evil on your dressing table" with her byline appeared on the newspaper's website and on its Monday issue.

Fernandez's earlier travel piece, which appeared in the June edition of the magazine and later in modified form in the newspaper, recounts her mock horror at finding herself in economy class surrounded by Filipino maids reeking of cheap cologne.

"I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them," she wrote.

The column drew fire from across the universe of online diaries who denounced her for alleged bigotry.

Eight million Filipinos, including maids, seamen, construction workers and professionals, work abroad and sent a record seven billion dollars back to the Philippines in the six months of 2007.

Fernandez at first tried to deflect criticism of her article, saying in a subsequent newspaper column that it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek humor.

"If any of these people actually read anything thicker than a magazine they would find it very funny," she wrote.

"Although it may sound elitist to you the fact is this country is built on the foundation of haves, have-nots and wannabes. One group will never get the culture of the other."

However, Fernandez said she has since become the "target of death threats, hate blogs, and deeply personal insults" and felt the need to apologize and quit.

The Manila Standard Today had earlier confirmed that Fernandez no longer wrote for the paper. It was not immediately clear why she had resumed writing.

Dear All,

By now you should know that I am not a fan of sending or forwarding personal matter through email… and my friends would attest that I am not that keen on writing letters, even to those who are closest to me. But in this case, I would like to make an exception.

A few days ago, I woke up late, tired from the previous day’s work. Saw that I missed some phone calls. One of which was from Mr. Luisito Ibarrientos, or Kuya Lito. Kuya Lito and I would usually exchange texts messages every so often. But due to the tons of stuff I had to do that day, I failed to return Kuya Lito’s call. Or to even text him back…

Who is Kuya Lito? He was the supervisor of the College of Business canteen in UP Diliman. Sobra kaming close nito. He practically took care of me when I was still in UP. Served as my pseudo-dad. And when there was a time my faith in the Lord was waning, he was there for me. He would read the Bible to me in between classes. He served as my “spiritual director”, and gave me sound advise and moral strength. We were not of the same religion, but he prodded me to be strong in the faith. He even gave me a prayerbook one day so I will always remember to pray. Birthday ko noon. And he didn’t know na birthday ko. I so felt God’s love through him, even during the times I questioned if God did indeed loved me.

We were so close that I invited him to work sa isang business na kasosyo ang family ko, hoping that I can improve the quality of his life. Naging ninong din ako ng kaisa-isang anak niya. His name is Jigo. 6 years old siya ngayon. I think he’s in Grade 2. Things were going on smoothly for years, until business needs dictated that the corporation had to let go of some workers. Napasama dun si Kuya Lito. I felt bad na during that time. Wala kaming magawa. Me and my family tried to look for a job din for Kuya Lito. But since he was not that young anymore, nahirapan kami. We tried to start a sari-sari store business din for him, pero it failed too.

In spite of that, Kuya Lito and my family, would normally keep in touch. Lumalabas ako at si Kuya Lito minsan, kasama si Jigo, just to bond. Minsan, natutulungan at naaabutan ko rin siya ng kaunti, because I was still working then.

But law school came. And all the responsibilities that came along with it. I had to resign from this post I had from this multinational firm. Di ko na din naaabutan si Kuya Lito dahil wala na akong steady income. Nawalan na ako ng oras. But we still kept in touch, until recently, when talagang my responsibilities took most, if not all of my time.

Back to the phone call. Yes I missed it. And I totally forgot to return his phone call.

A few days after, (last Friday) I got a text from Kuya Lito’s wife. Nastroke daw si Kuya Lito, and ni pang CT scan wala sila. I tried to make some phone calls to facilitate his transfer to a better hospital. But in spite of that, hindi daw sya stable. The next day, (Saturday) he died na. At hindi na naman ako nakadalaw. Busy with bar exam preparations. Late na nung nakadalaw ako. Sunday. Patay na sya.

I feel so guilty because I promised him I will try my best to make his life much better, especially for my inaanak, Jigo. But I failed. I know it is not naman my responsibility, but I so feel that I failed him. Ni yung last phonecall niya, sa sobra kong pagod at busy, ni hindi ko nasagot.

Worse, before Kuya Lito died, pinagbilin nya sa wife nya to contact me. He still remembers my promise na I’d try to make his life much better. He told his wife na lapit ka kay Ralph, he won’t fail us.

I would like to ask for your help. Kahit huli na. If you know any place where I can get a scholarship for Jigo, then please let me know. If you would like to give anything to him, kahit kaunting amount lang, then please feel free to contact me. I want to raise funds for Jigo and his family. I will not fail on my promise.

Please help me fulfill my promise for a better life, at least for Kuya Lito’s son Jigo.

Asia-Link Conference 2007

when i started this blog 3 weeks or so ago, i pledged to myself that i will update it everyday. i did for sometime, but this week i didn't. i have been so busy in my other activities that i failed to honor that pledge - i just need to do my best next time (however, i will be going home to Ilocos this weekend AND since my bluetooth-capable mobile was stolen, i won't be able to access the Net at home). i will just post as many tonight as the days i missed and will miss.

last monday, though the rest of the country rested, i was at edsa-shangrila ortigas the whole day. i attended an International Conference - Asia Link Project. basically, it was a gathering of intellectuals. I am glad I got to meet some of them. :P One of the fun parts of the whole day event is i got to listen to BSP Gov. Armando Tetangco and his views on the economic prospect of our part of the world.

Analysis of balance sheet accounts which includes receivables, inventory, investments including SUBPRIME, intangibles, and property, plant and equipment;
Financial analysis of financial institutions and holding companies; and
Financial analysis of mining companies.

The first two sessions will be discussed by Marie Therese F. Agustin. Ms. Agustin is an Associate Professor at the UP CBA. She is also a management consultant undertaking financial advisory, investment brokerage, strategic planning, and operations auditing services. Her major clients include the Asian Development Bank, Asian Finance and Investment Corporation, and Sun Hung Kai Securities (Phils.), Inc. Prof. Agustin holds a Master of Business Administration (major in Finance) degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

The third session will be discussed by Arthur Cayanan. Dr. Cayanan is Professor of Finance and Accounting at the UP CBA. He is also the Assistant Vice President for Finance of the University of the Philippines System, Investment Consultant to the UP Business Research Foundation, Inc., and former Investment Officer of the UP Foundation, Inc. He is one of the authors of the book Investment Management and the Philippine Stock Market, and the Philippine Corporate Finance. Prof Cayanan earned his PhD in Business Administration and MA Economics degrees from UP.

The session on mining companies will be discussed by Dr. Carlo A. Arcilla. Dr. Arcilla is the Director of the National Institute of Geological Sciences of the UP College of Science. He is also an Associate Professor of geology in that college. Dr. Arcilla holds a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering and geological Sciences and a Masters in Geology degrees from the University of Illinois. He has worked with some of the top mining companies in the country for several years.

Portfolio Update August 31, 2007

Y'all!

Everything looks good this week - life, racket, teaching and of course, stock portfolio. With the additional MIC purchase this week - I bought at P4.35. Here is my updated stock portfolio.
Yehey! My portfolio has a paper rate of return at 7.62% which is much better than last week's 2.15%. Anyway, the goal for the next 2 months or so is to increase the portfolio to P100,000.00. Let's see, if I divide the required increase for each of my racket, I think that the goal is reasonable. But then we'll just have to see at the end of two months - on October 30, 2007. Goodluck to me! :p
