They gave us a panda plush toy when our baby girl was born. She navigated towards it with golf-ball sized hands, strong and chubby, as if she knew.
Now every night when we cry from fatigue, exhaustion, stress, she squeezes Edgar to herself and laughs, enveloped by his fur.

“Who’s Edgar?”
“The Panda!”
God, you infuriated me that first day, 6 years ago. Impatient for your coffee like the world would end if you couldn’t drink it instantly. First impressions are weird. Now I know you are nothing like that – you’re kind, gentle, caring. During that first phone conversation, however, your annoyance seeped through – a combination of being overworked and miserable.

“Danapple,” I murmur in between breaths of sleep. “She’s awake – go check on her.”
You wave me away. “She’s fine.”
Then, as if struck with a lightning bolt, you jerk up in horror. “I’m so sorry.”
Your biggest fear is being neglectful, but we all slip into weakness sometimes. Closing my eyes into dreams, I kiss out at you but you’re gone; there’s someone more important in our lives now.

We only had to speak once for me to craft the perfect nickname for you. The reason you had been rushing me with sighs and eye rolls to place your order? You wanted the last Cranapple muffin. Seriously! I wasn’t going to order it anyway, not when I was on my way to LA and had a night planned with my girl friends in K-Town. I was already missing all my stuff – new blue shorts I just had delivered, an indigo coloured special-edition laptop, Edgar. At least it was all locked up so you couldn’t riffle through it.

Training wheels off – rocketing into free-fall. Bouncing from disaster to drama. It turns out that we had our lives together back then: time for our careers, friends, health, the gym. Now we barely have time to catch up on the next episode of Romance Is a Bonus Book, and I know you’re wearing thin when it comes to my love of cheesy rom-coms.

“Edgar has put on a bit of weight,” you said.
A new panda, 10 times the size, was strapped to my suitcase – smothering it. What a bizarre incident that we both had the same suitcase, at the same time, in the same coffee shop and ended up switching. But when I was reunited with the case, my desire for my shorts, laptop, even Edgar, sunk away.
I laughed at your attempt to impress me – you’d obviously been watching romance films – and it had worked.

In the morning, we check on her together. Snuggled up to her fluffy friend, sleeping peacefully. I look at your face, golden and proud, and your eyes move to me. We did this – we’re doing this. Somehow, after all these years, you’re just as captivating. I pick her up, pulling her away from her Edgar, and she cries, until she knows she’s still at home. You wrap your arms around us both and kiss the few dark hairs on her plum-soft head.

Just to check in with you all and ask you for feedback...

So what do I have planned for you?

I've been writing more FanFiction (Malec, as per my current obsession) so I will upload the link to that ASAP.
I was also thinking of writing a quick review of Tinder and what I think makes a good date (as I have been on a few recently since ending my relationship of a year and a half 4 months ago).
Potentially a post on break-ups (as this has been a hot topic of conversation for me and my best friend over the last few months).
I will endeavor to write more reviews (TV, book, film).
Something a little bigger that I have planned is a guide to Copenhagen (as I have a trip planned soon) to let you all know what I think and where to go there.
I would also like to write about bisexuality and the transience of sexuality.
I will attempt to publish more creative work on here (short stories, etc.) for you to enjoy at your leisure.

In Praise Of ... The Breakfast Buffet

With heads spinning in rapture, we steal our bowls, plates, troughs. A spoon wielding army. Descending.

There's a diamond-sparkle gleaming off your cornflakes. Hear the crunch and shuffle of our cutlery gouging out a small mound. Cornflakes are not your only crunch. You crackle with crispies, offer a choc hit of coco pops and slow-release us from our excitement with weetabix.

Weary steps, hungry travelers.

Your table is wrapped in a twenty year-old cloth, but the presents atop it hold all of our desires. Except... if you only had last night's Indian takeaway, now cold, with garlic rice. You hardly need it - already weighed down. Thick buttery pastries that we crush with our molars to release sunshine smile mornings and French mountains. Toast we send on a quest through a toasting machine to circle the depths of heat, disappearing into toasty-land, then falling into reemergence caressed with golden success. We pile up ladle-fulls of fruit, chopped into baby-bite sized chunks. Treasure chest of rainbow jewels. Sweet, citrus, tangy, bitter, sharp cocktail.

Then we button mash your coffee-machine world of caffeine. Addictive pattern of pressing, slurping, relapsing.

Your tanks are the next stop. Electric-orange bursts from one chamber, parked next door sits a weak yellow and, further down, the table presents a keg of sea-foam-white milk, cold as stone, refusing to curdle.

This war-zone is multifaceted. Starving eyes slide across - scanning, gathering data, mouth slobbering at jam slashed into the heart of a warm croissant. We hawk-eye which riches we most crave and plot a course through the bodies that are equally eager to snatch away palmiers and feast until crumbs rain down from their greedy mouths. Instead, we please and sorry ourselves politely, ambling until able to devour. Because, breakfast buffet, we love you.

I love the cinema and will find many excuses to climb into a great new film! Colette particularly sparked my imagination and inspired me to write a short feminist piece. I loved the representation of sexuality and gender. As a bisexual and a writer, I am thankful for such an awesome exploration of her life. So, here goes...

Take Up Space In Your Own World - A Review of Colette

I am a woman. And through history that has meant: daughter, wife, mother. House-bound. Object of desire. Weaker sex. Fairer sex. Must go without sex. Person without rights. I won't bore you with the list because what is important is that... We are women and we get to decide what that is.

I am alive. I seek pleasure. I am not the sum of my parts. I am gorgeous, bright, powerful. A lover, a lesbian, an artist. Blissfully unashamed.

I am surrounded by thousands of buzzing women doing wonderful things. They ride bikes. Have empowered sex. Wear trousers and short hair. Desire happiness. They are not created and destroyed by the male gaze. They respect themselves. They are alive.

Women are as in demand as ever. They are consumed millions per second. Breasts are bought and sold. Vulvas. Bodies. The human herself. But never her soul. Never her heart. Or inner workings of her mind. That clutter in her brain that makes her unique, unchained.

She is not just consumed - she consumes. She creates. She reserves or gifts her consent. She grabs fistfuls of power. She adds to the noise of the modern world. She is the noise of the modern world.

Colette was a woman who reclaimed her words, her world. Loved as she pleased. Fought to live as she desired. Beat down the lock on her door. Rapped the knuckles of her 'headmaster'. Defined her destiny as she saw fit.

What is sensational today may one day be normalcy. But we are sensational and may choose never to fade into obscurity.

Tour of Book Cycle and Parliament Street

Little piece of Exeter that I wrote for Uni. Not my usual subject, but hope you enjoy nonetheless. Let me know what you think!

Dichotomy of peace and present. The noise of modern day a rash against landscapes of old. Nuggets of history slicing through the trappings of day-to-day mundanity. Exeter shrouded in a day of powder-blue and gloopy-grey skies threatening to unleash droplets of cold. Steel-coloured pavements throwing up ichor scents that blast through the veins of the city.

The House That Moved

We started our class tour at Book Cycle- a winding shop comprised of a ground floor bursting with bookcases, stairs creaking up to a seed collection, and a first floor of more paper back treasures with boards that let out an old man’s sigh at the weight of your steps. Tread lightly; he’s seen more years than you.

Stepcote Hill

Opposite Book Cycle is The House that Moved, so called because a group of 60s workers - complete with waistcoats and cigarettes dangling from their mouths - manually lugged the 21-ton-15^th-Century damsel to the current location to save her from demolition. A chunk of history sent rolling past bemused Exetonians and clattering cameras.

The class then weaved their way to wind up at Parliament Street. A 14^th Century cut between Greggs and Patisserie Valerie that may simultaneously feel like a quiet, claustrophobic haven from the overload of city streets and an alley often used as a toilet for drinkers on a weekend pub crawl.
