I just got back from the Joe Louis Arena in Downtown Detroit, where a rally in front of 22,000+ took place, and where our last Democratically elected President, Al Gore, endorsed Barack Obama.

It was awesome. And I've got pictures! Enjoy!

We show up there, and the line stretches all the way down the river walk as far as I could see, probably over a mile.

Here's a quick view across the Detroit River of Windsor, Ontario. Yeah, we're that close to Canada.

But we weren't trying to wait in that line, so we walked to the front of the line, and cut. Saved about an hour at least.

So we get inside, and get to the floor area in front of the stage. I'm like 20 feet away from the podium. Good times!

The Joe Louis Arena fills up and they start passing out signs. I snapped these couple of pics of the cutest little Obama supporter there.

Heck, even Detroit Piston's Chauncy Billups came out to warm up the crowd.

Then our Governor, Jennifer Granholm came up, spoke a few, before introducing the men of the hour. We have quite the foxy Governor.

Then, the Barack and Al come to the stage.

And then Al Gore gives a wonderful speech in support of Obama. And Obama listens in attentively.

Now it's Barack's turn. You know how everyone says this guy is even better in person than on TV, well that is a huge understatement. Obama lit the place on fire.

And, of course, I catch him blinking as he points out to the crowd.

Now, this picture, you might ask, why the hell post it? Well, it's because it's the shot I snapped while shaking Barack Obama's hand!!! I also got the opportunity to shake Al Gore's hand right after. So I shook the last man Democratically elected President, and the next man to be President.

All in all, it was a wonderful time and the energy and excitement was just awesome. If any of you ever have Obama visiting your town, go see him. It's truly a memorable experience.

And that's all for tonight from Detroit, Barack City!

Congratulations Barack Obama!

The entire team here at LJ's Blogorific would like to congratulate Barack Obama for winning the Democratic Party's Nomination for President of The United States of America.

It was wonderful watching MSNBC the night he clinched it and feeling proud to be witnessing history. 143 years after this country fought a civil war and eventually freed the slaves, we finally have nominated the first African American to a major party ticket for Prez.

I wish I could offer some gracious words to Senator Hillary Clinton, but I can't. She and her husband Bill opted to take the low road this primary campaign season. I really do hope that both of them make every effort possible to make amends for the atrocious way each of them behaved and campaigned. They managed to scar the Democratic Party and may have irreparably hurt the Clinton brand and legacy.

I know the next 5 months are going to get ugly at times. But never has this country been more ready to elect a Democrat as President. Barack Obama, although not my first choice (John Edwards was,) is the best candidate to run for and win the Presidency this election. If the way he has ran his campaign is any signal as to how we'll run this country, than we are in store for many good times ahead.

His approach of bottom up, grass roots politics, heavily influenced by his many years as a community organizer, should give all citizens an excitement that this government and this country will be returned back to its rightful owners, We The People.

Visit www.barackobama.com and familiarize yourself with this candidate. Volunteer to help us elect him, and if you can afford it, donate some money to his campaign, so he can continue the good fight through November with a victory, and lead this nation back to the promise that it has so often offered and delivered on, in it's 232 history.

Vote Barack Obama For President in 2008!

The RNC's Must Have Gift For Independence Day

I'm on the mailing list for the RNC, and I got this awesome idea from them for a gift for the 4th of July.

Dear LJ,
Just in time to celebrate our Nation's independence, meet Sam, the new member of the Republican National Committee.

Embroidered with the official logo of the RNC, Sam is decked out in red, white and blue and is sure to be the hit of your July Fourth party.

Sam is available for a limited-time only to our most loyal supporters like you, L. Ranging from being a Corporate Democrat, being funded by lobbyists, or representing the status quo.

John Edwards:

"We don't want to replace a bunch of Corporate Republicans with Corporate Democrats"

From the debate, prior to the New Hampshire Primary.

Let me just say a quick word about this. You know, Senator Obama and I have differences. We do. We have a difference about health care, which he and I have talked about before. We have a fundamental difference about the way you bring about change. But both of us are powerful voices for change.

And I might add, we finished first and second in the Iowa caucus, I think in part as a result of that.

Now, what I would say is this: Any time you speak out powerfully for change, the forces of status quo attack. That's exactly what happens. It's fine to have a disagreement about health care. To say that Senator Obama is having a debate with himself from some Associated Press story, I think is just not -- that's not the kind of discussion we should be having. I think that every time this happens -- what will occur every time he speaks out for change, every time I fight for change, the forces of status quo are going to attack. Every single time. And what we have to remember -- and this is the overarching issue here -- because what we really need in New Hampshire and in future state primaries is we need an unfiltered debate between the agents of change, about how we bring about that change, because we have differences about that. But the -- the one thing I do not argue with him about is he believes deeply in change and I believe deeply in change. And anytime you're fighting for that, I mean, I didn't hear these kinds of attacks from Senator Clinton when she was ahead. Now that she's not, we hear them. And anytime you speak out -- anytime you speak out for change, this is what happens.

John Edwards damaged Hillary Clinton.

Now, I don't take anything away from Barack Obama. He has excited and activated so many new people into the process. He has run a stellar campaign, and it has worked for him thus far.

But I strongly suspect that, had it not been for John Edwards attacking Hillary Clinton as he did, that Barack would not have done as well in the early states and on Super Duper Tuesday, which led to the 11 contest momentum he enjoyed until yesterday.
It's one thing to stay above the fray. And I've respected Obama's stance on it. But when you've got Hillary on the ropes, you've got to finish the job. And that's what he failed to do.

Barack Obama's campaign needs to come out, guns blazing. Let it start with the surrogates for a week or two, until we get past the next couple of caucuses and primaries coming up in Wyoming and Mississippi. But after that, it's Pennsylvania, which is comparable to Ohio in many ways.As Pennsylvania Governor, Ed Rendell said on MSNBC last night, Pennsylvania is looking for a John Wayne. Someone they think can take the fight to the Republicans.

There have been a couple of really good diaries here and here. And I was happy to see this story today;

Obama to sharpen criticism of Clinton

The presidential candidate said he planned to do more in the days ahead to raise doubts about his opponent's claims to foreign policy and other Washington experience. In a television ad that her campaign credits with helping her win, she portrayed herself as most prepared to handle an international crisis.
"What exactly is this foreign policy experience?" Obama asked mockingly. "Was she negotiating treaties? Was she handling crises? The answer is no."

Here are a few lines of attack I'd pursue.

Hillary Clinton only cares about Hillary Clinton. The saying is true, that the most dangerous place in the world to be, is between a Clinton and elected office.

Continuously remind Democrats of the Bill Clinton years, in specific reference to triangulation and cutting Democrats out of the process, to pass legislation with Republicans. Remind Democrats what happened in 1994, after 2 years of Clinton stabbing his own party in the back, and enabling the loss of the House of Representatives, for the first time in almost 50 years.

On Health Care, bring up that since Hillary Clinton pushed for National Health Care in 1993, Big Pharma and Insurance company's lobbyists have sure managed to forgive her, by contributing more to her campaign, than any other candidate this election cycle, Democrat or Republican.

On Lobbyist money. This resonated with many people, and why it was such a natural migration for many Edwards supporters, like myself, to Barack Obama. She is the Corporate Democrat John Edwards warned us about.

Continue the judgment argument against her. Link her repeatedly to her Iraq War vote. But tie that judgment to her economically as well. Talk about the costs of this war, in blood and in wealth. Explain how that money could have been better used, had it not been for Hillary Clinton's support of George W. Bush's war.

Hillary Clinton wants to couple herself with John McCain on experience, while Obama just gave a speech. From here on out, clump Hillary Clinton with John McCain and George W. Bush, at every turn. She, along with McCain and Bush pushed through the earlier version of the Bankruptcy Bill. She, along with Bush and McCain authorized the war in Iraq.

Talk about the damage to the Democratic Party that Hillary is causing by steering this Democratic Contest into negative attacks. In a year where the country is ready to hand the keys of the castle over to the Democrats, Hillary Clinton, and her unyielding desire for power, poses a grave risk to the Democratic candidate's chances this November. Explain that the longer Hillary Clinton denies the inevitable, (Obama as the nominee,) the harder it will be for Democrats to win in November, because of Hillary Clinton and her negative campaigning.

Repeat over and over again that Obama is the candidate that CAN beat John McCain. The candidate that can open up states to Democrats, that Hillary Clinton cannot. Talk about his 50 state strategy, and his desire to bring more and new people to the Democratic Party, where as Hillary Clinton depends on the 50%+1 strategy of the past.

Talk about the strong anti-Hillary sentiment in the country that will unify the Republican base in November, to turn out and vote against her. And talk about how that will end up costing Democrats seats in the House and Senate. This will resonate with undecided Super Delegates as well. Explain that, it'll take strong Democratic majorities in each body, to get many of the changes that this country needs, and that a Hillary Clinton candidacy will thwart those efforts.

I'm sure there are many more arguments that can be made and I'd love to read your suggestions and ideas below.

Side note: This constant theme out there, justifying Clinton's attacks on Obama, by saying that "if you think this is bad, wait until the Republicans start," is flawed. Rush Limbaugh made a good point the other day about the Republican Party not willing to attack Obama, and that's why Republicans should vote for Clinton, so this campaign becomes more gruesome and damaging.
I actually believe him on this one. I think, as Karl Rove believes, that Republicans would find themselves in a tough spot trying to attack Obama to a certain point, for fear of coming of as bigoted or racist. Don't get me wrong, they'll do what they can get away with, but what Hillary Clinton is doing is opening up all of these new lines of attack on Obama, which when the Republicans recite them later on, anyone who tries to make the case that Republicans have sinister motives for these attacks are thwarted by a simple response of, "well, Hillary said it first, and she's a Democrat." I wish this thought virus would be addressed as well.

And for those that think this strategy is a bad idea, I'm willing to listen to your logic and reasoning. I just view it as, Clinton has already opened up this door and has dragged Obama through it as well. I believe people will like seeing this kind of fight in him and he'll be able to get away with it, without driving up his own negatives too much, because he was forced into a corner by the highly negative Clinton Campaign, and he needs to defend himself. And the best defense, is a good offense.

Yes We Can - Barack Obama Video

This video truly touched me and only helped further my belief that Barack Obama is the change we need in this country.

Yes We Can!

No President John Edwards in 2009

The presidential candidate and true American, who inspired me more than any other presidential candidate ever has, bowed out of the race for the Democratic nomination today.

I got the text message early this morning notifying me of the news, and I was truly saddened. John Edwards was a candidate of the people and a man that spoke for so many without a voice. A man who saw the hardships of so many Americans. A man who felt the anguish and struggle so many people experience everyday, trying to get buy, trying to raise their families, trying to better themselves.

There's little I would wish for more, than I President John Edwards. I still hope that will come to be one day. He has inspired me and has inspired so many Americans with his message. Our Democratic Party and remaining candidates for President are better and more progressive candidates, because of John Edwards. The voice he has given so many is being heard and will continue to be heard.

Thank you Mr. Edwards for your campaign, your caring, and your fighting spirit. November 9th, 2004, just days after one of the most depressing elections in this country's history, I needed to find a way to vent. I needed to find a way to let the world know that we Progressives didn't perish. There were already plenty of great blogs out there. But I needed my own wrecking ground to reach the world. Hence, LJ's Blogorific was born.

It's amazing to me how much has happened and how much has changed in this country over the past 3 years. We've gone from a state of sorrow and depression, and propelled into a new Progressive era, with hope and excitement for the future. There is still so much work ahead of us, but the people are standing up. We are organizing. We are vocal. And we are, as we have always been, representative of the values and traditions of the majority of Americans. It's an amazing time that we are living in right now. I truly believe that history will look back on these years, and identify the darkness that has set over this country's democracy over the past generation, and will view the netroots as an integral tool of enlightenment, that helped save this country, and this democracy, from the the dark clouds of corporatist and neo-conservative ideology and rule.

Although individually, many of our roles have been a small part of the movement, but together, a significant and threatening force has been created, to battle the powers that be. And these powers be, are truly in their last throes.

Here are a few links to some of my favorite posts of the past 3 years here at LJ's Blogorific. Yesterday the Michigan Democratic Party received numerous complaints from around the state, including Wayne, Oakland, Genesee and Ingham counties, from voters who were incorrectly told by election workers that they would be unable to vote without photo identification and from voters who were not offered an affidavit if they did not have photo ID. Some polling sites had large signs stating that voters could not vote without photo ID.

??The photo ID law was administered incorrectly all across Michigan yesterday. Voters need to know that if they do not have an ID with them at the polls they can still sign an affidavit and cast a regular ballot,?? Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer said. ??Part of the problem was that Secretary of State Land??s office did not adequately publicize the photo ID requirement and they did a poor job preparing election workers for the new law. We will fight vigorously to make sure that in 2008 Michigan voters know they have the right to cast a ballot if they go to the polls without a photo ID.??

Gongwer reported Friday that Land??s office said that, ??No major debriefing and assessment of the voter ID requirements are planned at this point.??

Another law designed to suppress the vote and the will of the people. When it comes to Republicans, at the local, state and national level, it's all about disenfranchising voters and a coup of governance.

Workers at Chrysler Narrowly Approve New Contract

Well, it appears that the UAW barely approved it's new contract with Chrysler. Oh I know, so Republicans could try tricking people into thinking you need an ID to vote, hence suppress voter turnout.

Thanks to the Michigan Democratic Party for taking the time to address this. And the day after the 2004 Presidential Election, I wrote the majority of them off, because they were Bush supporters. Sure, that only lasted for a couple of days, but for those 48 hours or so, I was convinced that these people could not possibly be my friends and be so god damned stupid to vote for Bush. I mean, come on... do I really keep that kind of company?

Well, with the good grace of God, and my persistent advocation of progressives and the progressive agenda, I slowly have turned many of my friends to "independents" who think Bush is a failure, and will, for the 1st time in a long time, contemplate voting Democratic in the Presidential elections in 2008. But there's still 16 months left for the corporate media spin to sabotage all I've worked for.

With all of that good news, I still have a couple of hard core die hard Bushies. Yeah, I frequently remind them that they're a part of the remaining brainwashed 25%, and that the rest of the country has wised up to Bush and his failures. But what really irks me is when they get into attacking Governor Jennifer Granholm.

"That Canadian Bitch in Lansing is ruining our state. The rest of the country's economy is flourishing, except for here in Michigan." So, I respond that many of the manufacturing based states are very much struggling, just as much as Michigan, and it has wholly to do with the conservative economics, the promotion of unrestricted free trade, and tax incentives for corporations to ship good paying jobs overseas... all courtesy of the Republicans and George W. Bush.

This is where all of the sudden, any inclination of reason and logic, pull a Houdini with these whack jobs. Some sort of weird forcefield suddenly encompasses them, and all facts just bounce right off.

I know the economic status of the state of Michigan is lackluster currently. But I don't comprehend how these extremist cons can just so quickly write off our trade policies and blame a governor of a state, who took the job during one of the most painful job recessions in recent history.

I know, you may wonder, why I keep people like these as friends. As much as I would like to turn my back on them, aside from politics, they're not bad people. Sure, their ideology may lead to more disagreements then with my less fanatical friends, but as a progressive, my belief and value structure makes me view our current situation in a progressive light... that we are all in this together.

This is truly one of the most basic differences between the left and the right. The right has a "every many for themselves" type outlook, where the left's nature is that we are all in this together. And who knows, maybe over the decades, I may be able to break through to these hard core nuts. But in the mean time, I'm not holding my breath.

Democratic Presidential Primary 2008

I know, I've been sucking badly at this whole blogging thing in 2007. Call it recuperation or call it lazy, but it's been hard for me to reenergize after the 2006 Democratic victories.

Here in Michigan, Governor Granholm finally found common ground with the obstructionist Republican Senate, to find money for the state. Things are still pretty shaky here in Michigan's economy, and it's hard to say when things will turn around.

On the national picture, the 2008 Presidential Election is still 16 or so months away, but the campaigns are in full swing already. My guy on the Democratic side is John Edwards. He has been saying many of the things progressives want to hear. He seems the most willing to stand up to these multinational corporations and to the big lobbies in Washington DC, like Big Pharma, the HMO's, and Big Oil.

If I had to pick right now, who will likely be on each major party's ticket, I'd say it's looking like John Edwards vs. Mitt Romney.

I know you may be thinking, why John Edwards? He's behind in the national polls to Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama. Well, I truly do believe as the year comes to an end, Edwards will chip away at Hillary's support. And if the Iowa polls, which have John Edwards leading right now, hold as they are, it'll be a big bump for him going into Nevada, South Carolina, and then the Super Tuesday states.

Am I being optimistic? Maybe. But he really is the best candidate out there when it comes to progressive values. Although Barack Obama is also on the right track with some of what he's been saying.

May - Checkin In

I know, I know.
