MRES Celebrates the 20th Annual Solar Boat Regatta St. Paul, Minn. – Student and adult teams from across Minnesota will compete in the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society (MRES) 20th Annual Solar Boat Regatta.

Students build or adapt boats to run on solar power for the event, which includes speed, slalom and endurance races. For the first time, an elementary school team will race in the 2012 Regatta. At 9 a.m., a solar-powered pontoon boat will give free rides to the public. The Nick Hass Trio will provide live music. “We are expecting 20 student boats racing in the event to celebrate our 20th anniversary of Solar Boat Regatta this year,” said Doug Shoemaker, the MRES event organizer. “In 1992, the first Solar Boat Regatta in the U.S. was started here in Minnesota, and we’ve carried on the tradition for 20 years.” The solar boat races are designed to educate students about solar energy, design and engineering. The boats make use of the sun's radiation, which generates electricity and is either stored in a battery or used directly to run the boat's electric motor. No other power source is allowed in the races.

The public is invited to attend the free Regatta, which offers a chance to show support for solar power and the students' interest in renewable energy. It’s a day at the lake with family fun in the sun on the beach, so bring your grills, picnic baskets and lawn chairs to enjoy the day. “This year, we expect teams from Royalton High, Orono Middle School, Roosevelt High, City Academy of St. Paul and Odyssey Academy of Brooklyn Center and new teams from Alexandria, Parkers Prairie, Moose Lake, Rochester S.T.E.M. Academy, and Dover-Eyota will be racing in their solar powered boats,” said Shoemaker. “For the first time, we’ll have an elementary school participating--from Richfield Elementary S.T.E.M. School. We hope to get a balance of boys and girls from each of the second through fifth grades on the elementary school team,” said Shoemaker. The Minnesota Renewable Energy Society (MRES) is a member-run, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in Minneapolis in 1978 to promote the use of and to engage in advocacy for renewable energies in Minnesota through education and through the demonstration of practical applications. MRES is involved in education, awareness, and advocacy efforts for all forms of renewable energy, with a particular emphasis on solar technologies.

Build a Solar-Cell Phone Charger Class

When: Sat May 12, 2012 2pm to 9pm
