After hundreds of thousands of gallons of water have leaked from Cambridge, England's, 100-year-old underground piping system this winter, Cambridge Water officials are asking its customers to keep an eye out for future leaks while the company works on replacing the aging system, the Cambridge City News reports.

Reportedly, Cambridge Water met a 3-year goal by reducing water losses from plumbing leaks. However, the paper states new leaks are constantly occurring, and the company has already invested £2.5 million on leak detection technology to repair the system.

Andy Cuthill, water supply operations manager, told the paper, "While we can't stop leaks from happening, particularly at this time of year, what we can do is ensure we locate and fix them as soon as possible and this is where we are asking the public for their help." He told the paper customers should keep track of their water usage by consistently checking their water meters.

Water rates for Cambridge Water customers decreased from 2009 to 2010 to help ease the cost of the leaks. According to the company, metered households were charged £0.79 per cubic metre of water used in 2010, down from £0.82 the year before.
