Movies: 21 Days of Horror, Day 1; 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' , Public Power and Utility

noreply@blogger.com (local usa uk news and reports) — Fri, 8 Oct 2010 21:23:00 -0700

Scary movies are great year round, but it feels so right in October. We are gearing up for tube time with horror classics, Asian horror and campy gore and decided it would be fun to share some of our personal favorites. Throughout the month of October, we will be sharing one horror movie (or a series) a day of recommended watching.

To start it off, let me introduce you to one of my all-time favorites: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

In school, I was a bookworm and many of the books I loved were found in the “True Crime” section of the library. What I loved in the pages was on screen with “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” (1974) directed by Tobe Hooper.

The opening credits claim that what you are about to see is true (sooo ahead of “Blair Witch Project”), which led to rumors that it was loosely based on the real life killer Ed Gein, making it even more appealing. The story of teenagers getting stranded in the woods and looking for help only to find that the help might get them killed became a formula for slasher flicks.

The original film was controversial for violence and torture, sexism and gore, but the movie also was praised, garnering numerous awards and finding a place on many horror-movie lovers top-whatever lists.

While I love the original, the sequel that came out twelve years later in 1986, also ranks high on the list for introducing us to Bill Moseley (‘Chop-Top’ Sawyer). One of my favorite horror scenes is in this movie where the teenage boys are driving on a Texas highway and a van pulls alongside and a chainsaw-wielding Leather face on top of the car to the sounds of Oingo Bingo.

Hooper was only involved with the first two movies, but more have been produced with

I skipped the 2003 remake, but caught the prequel, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” (2006), both produced by Michael Bay. I wanted to hate it, but it was still the story I love with buckets of gore, violence and chase scenes with a madman wearing a mask made out of a dead person’s face. Both movies received negative reviews, but if you love the original, it wouldn’t kill you to see all of them.

FLV - US , Tuesday TV: New 'Big Lake,' 'Melissa & Joey'

noreply@blogger.com (local usa uk news and reports) — Wed, 18 Aug 2010 04:51:00 -0700

US Traffic Only; No Incent Allowed. Converts on download and install

Of the two, "Big Lake" (Comedy Central, 10 p.m.) is at least timely in its depiction of a Wall Street trader gone broke and going back to live with his parents. But Chris Gethard, the slight newcomer chosen to take the role vacated by Jon Heder, can't quite fill the space; he's fairly eclipsed by ex-"Saturday Night Live" cast members in supporting roles, Chris Parnell and Horatio Sanz. Plus, it's not so funny.

Ditto for "Melissa & Joey" (ABC Family, 8 and 8:30 p.m.), an interesting curiosity mostly because it features a pair of former child actors. But Melissa Joan Hart isn't quite credible in the kind of role Amy Poehler plays in "Parks & Recreation"; Lawrence even less so as the new nanny. The jokes can be pretty raunchy for an ABC Family production, but still not very funny. However, the canned laughter roars.

The otherworldly landscape of the South Australian Salt Flats provides a fascinating landscape for photographer Murray Fredericks, caught in film "Salt" on "P.O.V." (WGBY, 10 p.m.; CPTV, 11 p.m.). It's accompanied by a short film, "A Healing Art" by Ellen Frick about the people who hand paint artificial eyeballs for those who have lost an eye. Not as pretty: removing and installing them.

Also on "P.O.V." for a number of weeks starting this week are some choice recordings done by Story Corps trucks. The autobiographical tapes, done all over the country and frequently heard on NPR, have been animated by Mike & Tim Rauch. And while animating existing audio tapes doesn't always work, with "The Ricky Gervais Show" being the most recent example), these are charming because of the sympathetic depictions and the splendid stories, beginning with the elderly love story of Danny and Annie this week.

On "Shaq vs." (ABC, 9 p.m.) the behemoth goes after the tiny Rachael Rae for a kitchen competition.

"Wipe out" (ABC, 9 p.m.) has been renewed for a new season., if you're making viewing plans for next summer.

Another way to slow down action on "America's Got Talent" (NBC, 8 p.m.) is to have a wild card round, giving previously eliminated acts have a second chance.

The bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, 45 years (and 11 days ago) is recouted on "Explorer" (National Geographic, 10 p.m.).

Marc Anthony and Michael Vartan are guests on "HawthoRNe" (TNT, 9 p.m.).

Baseball tonight includes Tigers at Yankees (WCTX, Channel 59, 7 p.m.), Angels at Red SoxRangers at Rays (MLB, 7 p.m.) and Mets at Astros (SNY, 8 p.m.). (NESN, 7 p.m.),

In WNBA action it's Shock at Sun (CSN, 7:30 p.m.) as well as Sky at Dream (NBA, 7 p.m.) and Mercury at Sparks (NBA, 10:30 p.m.).

GameFly - US , Jim Thome's homer burns White Sox in 10th as Twins extend lead in AL Central

noreply@blogger.com (local usa uk news and reports) — Wed, 18 Aug 2010 04:15:00 -0700

Jim Thoma hit 92 homers in three seasons for the Chicago White Sox.

But years from now, the homer White Sox fans might remember most is the one he hit Tuesday night to steal the wind from Chicago's playoff sails.

Thoma belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th against Matt Thornton, lifting the Minnesota Twins to an emotional 7-6 win against the White Sox.

"That might go down as one of the better games I've ever played in," said Thoma, who's played in 2,365. "What a game."

Minnesota manager Ron Garden hire was glad the White Sox didn't see much playing time in Thoma's future when they let him go to the Dodgers at the tail end of last season. He knew Thoma still had his power stroke.

"We brought Thoma in here for a reason, and that's one of 'em," Garden hire said.

Even White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen knew Thoma was still capable when he urged management not to attempt to re-sign Thoma this season. On the first day of spring training, Guillen told the Chicago Sun-Times:

Chicago had taken the lead in the top of the 10th, when Alexei Ramirez, who had tied the game with a ninth-inning homer against Matt C apps, singled home the go-ahead run against Jon Ranch.

But the Twins continue to have Chicago's number.

The win, Minnesota's 20th in its last 26 games against the White Sox, extended the Twins' AL Central Division lead to four games. The White Sox, who led the division by 1 1/2 games on Aug. 7, were still tied for first after Aug. 11.

How excited are the Twins?

How high in the air did Thoma fling his batting helmet before meeting his appreciative teammates at home plate?

Thoma, who turns 40 on Aug. 27, has hit 17 homers this season on just 253 at-bats. He's 10th on the all-time home run list with 581 (eight more than Twins legend Harmon Killebrew).

Of Thome's homers, 12 have been walk-off winners. That ties him for the most all-time with Babe Ruth, Frank Robinson, Mickey Mantle, Jimmie Foxx and Stan Musial. Those five players are in the Hall of Fame.

Tuesday's drive deep to right field -- Minnesota's first walkoff homer in 57 games at Target Field -- revived the questions about Thome's status as a legitimate Hall of Fame candidate . Although he's never been an MVP, he's never been linked to performance enhancers, despite thriving in the steroid era.

Paul Konerko homered for the White Sox on Tuesday, reaching 30 for the sixth time in his career. He has 356 career home runs, having played six fewer seasons than Thoma.

Thoma has hit 30 or more homers in 12 of the previous 14 seasons. The Hall of Fame discussion will come in due time for both players.

Tuesday night was all about the present and the pennant race.

The Twins won despite blowing a 4-0 first-inning lead and having two runners thrown out at the plate. Delmon Young , who homered to give Minnesota a 5-4 lead, was taking no prisoners when he collided with White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski in the eighth inning, unsuccessfully trying to jar the ball loose.

Pierzynski stood his ground and Thornton, handling closing chores in place of Bobby Jenks, did the same after the game.

"The only thing that stings is the fact that our offense battled all night and we couldn't pull it out," he said. "That's the only thing that hurts for me. It doesn't matter who hit the home run."

Make My Baby AU , 'Flipping Out' - 'Hot Streak, Lots of Baggage' (Season Premiere) Recap

noreply@blogger.com (local usa uk news and reports) — Wed, 18 Aug 2010 03:36:00 -0700

Use FBI face detection technology to predict what your baby will look like. Converts on pin submit. No incent. NC

When Jeff Lewis referred to the changes in his business early on in the season premiere of 'Flipping Out,' for a while there it seemed like it was all for the better.

After all, the Ryan Brown smoke screen had been lifted -- a Google search snafu that resulted in business never reaching Jeff because it was diverted to Ryan -- and the job offers were up four times what they'd been before. But enough about the work, what about the baby in the office?

Well, it wasn't Jenni and Jeff's. That much hadn't changed. No, it was Jeth's. Between the baby -- an occasional visitor -- and the unruly dogs and willful cats, the Jeff Lewis office was more a variation on last season than a real change.

You could say the same about Jeff Lewis. Instead of being happy about all the new opportunities, the perfectionist in him continued to drive the mere mortals on his staff to distraction.

Only Jeff could be personal and sweet while inquiring about Jenni's new boyfriend, a nice Greek fellow named Jonathan of whom her mother approved, then chew her out for leaving a phone number off a client list. Jeff was looking for an apology, but Jenni felt that mistakes happen.

Their fight lingered, with Jeff suggesting in front of another client that Jenni didn't get it. "It seems like you don't care." After nine years of Jenni putting up with a world of criticism from Jeff, including some rough stuff, like the time Jeff nanny-cammed Jenni's then-husband Chris to prove he was using Jeff's computer (which contributed to their divorce), Jeff still treated Jenni like baggage.
What the new season shows is that it takes a tough shell to work in the Jeff Lewis environment. It's getting tougher too because the business is busier than ever. Remember those convivial lunches with the staff when Jeff would chastise an assistant for bringing a meal that didn't exclude the onions from his burger, and then he'd tease Zoila for the amusement of the team? They're gone. Lunch now is McDonald's in the car on the way to a site. Yum.

A lifelong friend not only brings bail money but doesn't ask questions and carries a shovel in the trunk. Ideally, we never need that, but we should all have friends willing to get arrested for us. In "Revenge of the Bridesmaids," airing Sunday, July 18, on ABC Family, those friends are Abigail and Parker ( Raven-Symone, "That's So Raven," and JoAnna Garcia, "Privileged"). They not only get arrested but even wear Pepto-Bismol pink dresses, all in the name of friendship in the romantic comedy. The movie is a lot better than it needs to be. Yes, it's predictable, but so are action movies. In this at least, there are some fun lines and a celebration of the power of women's friendship. "It's about friends and girls and the length we would go to be a friend to somebody," Garcia says. "At the end of the day what is right prevails, even if it causes us to be arrested and do naughty things. I don't know that I would go to that extent. It is just a really fun escape to a girlie, girlie world." As much fun as deposing an evil bride is, the movie is not without its lessons. "The secret girl rules of: 'Do not steal my man!' come with consequences," Raven-Symone says. "So watch before you start man stealing."

RIPON, Calif. — Walter Hawkins, a Grammy Award-winning gospel singer, composer and pastor from Oakland, died Sunday. He was 61.

Hawkins, who was battling pancreatic cancer, passed away at his home in Ripon, Calif., his older brother Edwin Hawkins said.

"Today, I lost my brother, my pastor, and my best friend," said Edwin Hawkins. "Bishop Hawkins suffered bravely but now he will suffer no more and he will be greatly missed."

Born in Oakland, Hawkins studied for his divinity degree at the University of California, Berkeley.

While at the university, he recorded his first album titled "Do Your Best" in 1972.

The next year, Hawkins became a pastor and founded the Love Center Church in Oakland, where he also formed a choir.

In the 1980s, Hawkins recorded a number of albums and earned nine Grammy Award nominations, according to friend and family representative, Bill Carpenter.

His "The Lord's Prayer" won a Grammy in 1980 and he also performed on the televised Grammy Awards ceremony that year.

In 1990, Hawkins released "Love Alive III" which spent 34 weeks at the top on the Billboard gospel album sales chart, while going on to sell more than a million copies, according to Carpenter.

In 1993 his next album, "Love Alive IV," also hit the top spot on the album sales chart. Between work on the two albums, Hawkins was ordained a bishop in October 1992.

At the time of his death, Hawkins was planning a new "Love Alive" CD concert recording for this fall.

Besides his brother Walter, Hawkins is survived by two children, two grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

THIEVES stole a litter of one-week-old piglets from a farm and are now suspected of running

a scam to sell them as pets.

The eleven piglets were snatched from beside their mother at Segment Farm on Pennington Lane, Earlestown.

They battered the sow with wooden sticks and it is believed they may have returned to the farm several times to gather all the piglets.

Owner Arthur Bevan, a butcher, believes many of the piglets will have died but there have been reports some are being offered for sale as pets in parts of St Helens.

It is feared crooks have been trying to pass off the piglets as ‘micro pigs’. These are trendy teacup sized pets favoured by some celebrities which sell for about £700.

Arthur, 60, from Burton wood and a part owner in Pimmies Pies, said: “It is cruel and despicable to take them away from their mother when they are so young.

“They are most probably dead but we’ve heard reports some are being offered for sale in Parr by people falsely claiming they are micro pigs (which do not grow and are kept bigger) and trying to sell them for £100 each.

“But these pigs would grow up to weigh a third of a tonne, they are bred for meat. I would be lucky to get £20 for them even when they are six weeks old and feeding properly.

“Anyone who may be transporting these animals without the proper documentation from DEFRA could face jail. So in many ways they are breaking the law.”

Merseyside Police confirmed to the Star they are investigating the unusual theft.

A police statement read: “Sometime during the evening of Friday, June 18, 11 piglets were taken from Segment Farm on Pennington Lane.

“Officers are urging members of the public not to buy any livestock that is offered to them illegally and to report anyone attempting to sell livestock illegally to the police.

“Anyone who may be able to help the police with their enquiries regarding this theft can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Whi l e mo s t of A merica w ent to bed eagerly anticipating/nauseating over ESPN's Lebronathon (also known as "The Decision"), numerous reputable sources are reporting that Lebron James will sign with the Miam i Heat.

With the two-time MVP's new Twitter account and marketing website and much-maligned announcement show, maybe the result of this cat-out-of-the-bag should've been expected.

ESPN is reportedly spoiling their own show, although nothing will be certain until "The Decision" (perhaps because everyone at a network has to make sure its hottest television finale is as drama-packed as possible).

The big news yesterday morning--other than that one-hour announcement show being announced--was that Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were committed to the Heat. "The Decision" may have been ruined by, among others, ESPN's own Chris Broussard, but it's definitely set up an intriguing set of NBA seasons.

There were grumblings that Lebron's camp leaked that info to the press ahead of schedule to make Thursday all about him, but that's apparently forgiven (and this was always about Lebron anyway). Mmaybe Le Bron James should make his announcement from South Beach Thursday night.

Though the superstar free agent plans to reveal his future NBA team from the Boys and Girls Club in Greenwich, Conn., - a jump shot away from the New York Knicks' practice facility in Green burgh, N.Y. - reports surfaced early Thursday morning that James plans to join the Heat, where a new 'Big Three' appears to be on the horizon in Miami.

It would be the third major coup in fewer than 48 hours for Pat Riley's Heat. Franchise star Dwyane Wade announced his intention to re-sign with the team he won an NBA championship with in 2006, and former Toronto All-Star Chris Bosh said he'll be joining the Finals MVP in South Beach.

The news of James' intentions to avoid the Big Apple first appeared in a published report online and in multiple posts by NBA reporters on Twitter. It came less than a day after multiple reports indicated the New York Knicks' chances of signing James had improved.

On Wednesday, Jared Dudley, a former Phoenix Suns teammate of Amar'e Stoudemire, posted on his Twitter account, "Breaking News!!! My sources tell me Le Bron will announce that he will be goin to the NY KNICKS tomorrow on ESPN.. This is serious.. WOW!!!!"

Later in the day, a source close to James said the NBA star was expected to fly to Greenwich, Conn., to take part in an hour-long, nationally-televised special with ESPN Thursday night. In addition to its close proximity to the Knicks' practice facility, Greenwich is approximately 25 miles from Madison Square Garden.

GULF PORT, MS (W LOX) – Food and music are standard ingredients for most Fourth of July celebrations, but one group took it a step further and added education.

People lining up on the front lawn of Gulfport's Chimney's restaurant were adding more to their Fourth celebration than just fireworks, thanks to the first annual Save Our Sound event.

Save Our Sound brought together local entertainers to do their part helping the coastal crisis.

"It's just an awareness about what's happening, not only in the Gulf, but also in the Downtown Gulfport area or the Gulf Coast in general," said event organizer John Hosey Jr. of Green Earth Productions.

According to Hosey, the event started as an idea to show off local bands. After talking with family, he said it turned into a grassroots movement to educate people and bring more attention to the Mississippi Sound. Along with day long concerts, the event included art vendors, food, painting booths and even a chance to write troops overseas.

Warehouse 13 - "Time Will Tell"

noreply@blogger.com (local usa uk news and reports) — Wed, 7 Jul 2010 03:58:00 -0700

Warehouse 13 is one of those shows I want to like a lot more than I actually do. I love the idea of it. It's set in my beloved home state. I think the cast is pretty fun, and I really love the character of Artie, who has what's pretty much my dream job. This has all of the ingredients necessary to make a goofy, fun summertime romp. And yet, something about it holds me completely at arm's length. I've enjoyed individual episodes (particularly as season one got going and found a groove), but the series itself is full of moments that never coalesce for me. Inevitably, when the show turns to its master plot about who's behind the warehouse or all of the crazy things it has on its shelves, I start to zone out. The same goes for the rivalry between Artie and MacPherson. Sadly, much of the season premiere focuses on that relationship.

I think the reason so many people love this show so much is because the world the show has cooked up is a fun place to hang out. The idea that there's a massive warehouse in the South Dakota badlands that features numerous objects from various fictional traditions is an inherently fun one, and that gives the show a lot of goodwill from the start. Honestly, this show could just be about people wandering around the warehouse and having laconic conversations about its contents for a half hour every week, and it would probably still be pretty enjoyable.

Roxy Olin of 'The City'

noreply@blogger.com (local usa uk news and reports) — Wed, 7 Jul 2010 03:42:00 -0700

In her hometown of Los Angeles, where women wear colors, Roxy Olin wore black.

In her adopted hometown of New York, where women wear black no matter the season, Olin wears more colors.

She isn't necessarily contrarian; she's just a bit of a fashion outsider. A participant in MTV's The City, the offshoot of The Hills, Olin works for Kelly Cutrone, a publicist with her own reality show, Kell on Earth. If that's not TV-incestuous enough, Olin, 24, may also be familiar as Michelle from Brothers & Sisters, on which her father and mother, Ken Olin and Patricia Wettig, appear as actors, her dad serves as director, and her brother Clifford is a writer.

In The City, Olin is immersed in the fashion world and has been changing her look.

"Since I have been on the show, you get lost between the girls," she says. "Olivia has her style together. Being in New York defines who you are; everyone is so fashion-forward here, and to keep up, you have to define yourself, and I try to put a little more edge."

She describes her look as "edgy street style; I wear a lot of vintage stuff."

Marcus Wesson "Family Secrets"

noreply@blogger.com (local usa uk news and reports) — Wed, 7 Jul 2010 03:24:00 -0700

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Six years ago, Fresno became the scene of a notorious mass murder. Marcus Wesson is now on death row for killing nine of his children.

His victims included kids he fathered through incest. In a primetime special called "Family Secrets," the stories of the surviving Wesson family members, including Wesson's now ex-wife Elizabeth will be told.

Elizabeth Wesson's divorce became final two months ago. She says that was a symbolic closure for her. Marcus Wesson was a controlling part of her life since she was 8-years-old.

Her family's story is the focus of an hour-long special about how she and her children survived decades of mind control and how they are moving forward now.

Elizabeth Wesson says she didn't even begin to see the deep scars her former husband left on her and her children until several years after the horrific crime. "It feels like I'm coming out of a fog or something. It's taken me time to get where I'm at, it really has."

Tuesday night Elizabeth and her five surviving children share the pain they endured under the constant control of convicted killer Marcus Wesson.

Elizabeth says her family opened up and spoke candidly with correspondent Jay Schadler about what they did to cope with extreme physical and sexual abuse. "This is the first time ever they verbally expressed what they were going through. And it's gonna be hard for me to watch. Very hard."

The twisted life the family led under Wesson's domination came to a halt in March of 2004 when Fresno Police arrived at a domestic dispute at the family's Central Fresno home. After a brief standoff officers walked in to find nine bodies piled in a corner, all shot to death.

The murders ended a family secret the group hid for years. A life of beatings, insults and incest. Even today, sharing the way they existed is difficult.

"The questions, I wasn't prepared for the questions that they were asking you know I tried to answer as honestly as I could and it brought back a lot of memories that I really don't want to remember really."

As part of the story, the family returned to places they lived with Wesson ... Like Tamales Bay in Northern California. Although the family almost always lived together, they were isolated from the world. The journey reminded Elizabeth of the emotional scars her children will always carry.

"Seeing the pain on my children faces. Because after we did the filming it took us about a week or two to get over that. Because it's really painful."

The first Fresno Police officer who arrived at the scene that day also talked about his experience. Eloy Escareno was the first to enter the home and confirm what other family members had already assumed.
