How to Unfreeze a Frozen Car Lock: When the thermometer dips below freezing temperatures at Mr. Locksmith we receive many calls from customers who are locked out of their cars because the car door lock is frozen.

When the thermometer dips below freezing temperatures at Mr. Locksmith we receive many calls from customers who are locked out of their cars because the car door lock is frozen. Note: the most common cause of frozen car locks is the customer washed their car and not only is the car lock frozen but the entire door. Most of the time only a small amount of water has entered the car lock via the key hole.

So what do you do if your car door lock is frozen “do not pour hot water over your car door and car lock.” Boiling water may or may not work but the hot water may damage the door lock and seals. Also, the water will freeze again this time in the lock and linkage.

I have found the best method to loosen up the frozen lock is using a spray “Lock De-icer.” Lock De-icer is available at most Automotive Stores and Canadian Tire.

No Lock De-icer? If you are at home Hook up a blow dryer. If you don’t have a long enough extension cord try warming your key with a lighter (not too hot or you can melt some parts of the lock, a lot of plastic parts in modern car locks). Just heat the key up and put it into the lock, remove the key and reheat, keep doing this until the lock will eventually unfreeze and open. Note: If you do not have a lighter use you hands to warm the key.

Lubricate Your Car Locks:
During cold weather flush your car locks with WD40 to remove the moisture (do not use oil, this attracts dust and dirt and will eventually jam the lock). Again, the best solution is “Lock De-Icer” sprayed into the car lock key hole. Gently put the tip of your car key into the lock to push back the key lock dust cover and spray lock de-icer into the keyway.

Never try to force your door open. Cold plastic and metal become brittle and cold metal will break with very little force. We have had to open cars with a broken car door handle because the customer try to force open the door.

A very simple method is to try opening the passenger door or the cars hatch. However, most modern cars only have a drivers door lock and no passenger lock.

Hopefully these simple methods can help you. If you do call us at Mr. Locksmith Professional Locksmiths to open your car we use a portable rechargeable hair dryer and Lock De-icer to open your frozen car door lock.

If you have BCAA auto insurance, Canadian Automobile Assocaition (CAA), American Automoblie Assocation (AAA) or other emergency auto/RV/motorcyle/bike roadside service, and if your keys are locked inside the car or trunk, or your keys are lost or broken, and lost car keys, they will cover emergency locksmith service up to $100. Mr. Locksmith will provide you with a receipt so you can submit it to your auto insurance provider for 24 hour locksmith Vancouver reimbursement.

Locked out? Need Keys? Keys locked in your car? or worst, keys locked in the trunk? Mr. Locksmith Automotive Locksmith Vancouver Mobile Service specialize in opening cars and trunks without damaging the vehicle.

Locked out? Need Keys? Keys locked in your car? or worst, keys locked in the trunk?

When I passed my drivers license (one day after I turned 16yrs old) and I could now, after school and weekends, do emergency mobile locksmith service. My favorite locksmith job was “keys locked in car.” I could open any car with a homemade long piece of banding steel (later I bought a “Slim Jim”) and a coat hanger with a Sheperd’s hook bent on one end. I later updated my coat hanger to a chrome coat hanger (people got upset when I just used a plain coat hanger).

I could open any car in less than 60 seconds. Today with modern cars with anti-theft devices, air bags in the door, pick resistant locks I have a large car opening kit filled with air wedges, long reach tools that glow in the dark, bendable tools with hooks and lasso and a computer program to help me open the harder cars. Also, I have specialized lock picks to open pick resistant locks (BMW, Lexus, etc.).

Note: Tennis balls blowing air into the keyhole will not open any car (fun stunt on Youtube).

BBB, BC Consumer Protection and the BC Crime Prevention Association.

The top ten list identifying the Fraudulent and Unlicensed Locksmiths was developed jointly by the BBB, BC Consumer Protection and the BC Crime Prevention Association.

BBB ”Consumers reported “local locksmiths” advertising online using a local telephone number and local address, but when contacted, consumers are connected to a call centre in another city.

Consumers who have hired these companies allege they have been overcharged for products and services, received bad advice or poor workmanship, or have had difficulty contacting the business to correct problems.

BBB stated “Fraudulent locksmiths: Florida-based locksmiths posing as local firms have been overcharging for poor workmanship and bad advice and have left consumers with no avenue for redress. Locksmith Master and Locksmith Pros are two operating locally.”

AVOID FRAUD, DON’T BE A VICTIM: Don’t just pick the first “local” company you find online. Most of the Google “Paid Ads” are unlicensed locksmiths. Confirm the company address and ask for the legal name of the business. When the locksmith arrives, ask for identification, a business card and their BC Security Employee license. All reputable companies will take Visa or MasterCard if they insist on cash only beware.

I was contacted by a lady yesterday who said she was a victim of a Unlicensed Locksmith company she found on Google Ad Words in Downtown Vancouver who wanted to charge her over $300 to replace a mailbox lock she had lost the keys to. She paid the two “scuffy looking men” $160 cash and still has no keys to her mailbox.

Note: Mr. Locksmith charges only $95 + HST to pick open and replace the mailbox lock and we supply 2-3 keys.

Mr. Locksmith is a BC Licensed Locksmith Company (B4227) and is a 24 Hr. Emergency Mobile locksmith specializing in lock rekeys, lock outs, high security deadbolt installation and are experts in picking locks (except UL Listed Pick Resistant Locks eg Schlage Primus, Medeco, ASSA). Mr. Locksmith has a locksmith store at SFU Harbour Centre at 555 W Hastings.
How to Rekey a Schlage SecureKey Deadbolt by Mr. Locksmith in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Terry Whin-Yates 3rd Generation Locksmith.

Schlage SecureKey locks are customer rekeyable locks. You must have an existing Reset (blue) key and a different cut Reset (blue) key and operating keys. The lock is identifiable with a “+” stamped at the top center of the keyway or cylinder plug.

Step One
a) Insert Reset (blue) key into deadbolt lock.

b) Turn Reset (blue) key 30 degrees left (counter clockwise).

c) Remove Reset (blue) key from lock (Note: do not turn key).

Step Two
a) Insert new Reset (blue) key into keyway.

b) Turn new Reset (blue) key Right 30 degrees (clockwise).

c) Remove Reset (blue) key from lock.

Final Step Three
Test lock with New Schlage keys (matching Step Two Reset (blue) key).

Note: Do not use Reset (blue) key for everyday use.

Blue Key Blank (Left), Blue Key Cut (Center) and Regular or daily use key (Right)

The Reset (blue) key has a thinner key blade and different millings than a regular Schlage SC1 key.

If you have lost all yours keys to the Schlage SecureKey lock(s) you must replace the lock cylinder. (Good time to upgrade the lock cylinder to a regular or commercial Schlage cylinder).

I highly recommend most of the Schlage deadbolts and key-in-knobs. I have been installing Schlage deadbolts for over 30 years and my favorite is the B660 Heavy Duty and Primus High Security deadbolts. However, the Schlage SecureKey Deadbolt in its current configuration has similar weaknesses as the Weiser Smart Key and Kwikset Smart Key locks. The Schlage SecureKey lock can be picked by experienced locksmiths (Weiser Smart Key lock picking competitions have Schlage SecureKey as a comparison). However, the Weiser Smart Key can be opened in seconds while the Schlage SecureKey is slightly more secure.

In future blogs I will demonstrate how easy it is to defeat these locks and why you should not install these customer rekeyable locks on your home or business. Again, Schlage has a great line of residential and commercial grade deadbolts and locks but I cannot recommend the Schlage SecureKey locks for my customers.

I appreciate any comments especially from Schlage or Weiser / Kwikset (Black and Decker).

In this blog Mr. Locksmith discusses some of the increased security risks associated with the holiday season, and provides valuable security warnings and helpful hints into season-specific theft prevention.

In recent years Vancouver has earned the title of ‘Canada’s most dangerous city.’ Yet in Canada, violence is not typically associated with home invasions. However, as this video shows, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWeX-RwhhQY) the threat of home invasion is very real and very scary. Criminal behaviour is tempted by opulence and materialism. Thus, as any locksmith would tell you, home invasions rise exponentially during the holidays. Like ‘The Grinch,’ criminals want to slink through your home stealing the presents from under your tree. Here at Mr. Locksmith, we have identified several security tips that will help keep your home safe throughout the Christmas season and beyond.

The most important step to home security is having adequate door hardware. This does not mean having a super expensive electronic door lock; however, in Vancouver forced entry is common, so a solid deadbolt is a must! Mr. Locksmith technicians carry a range of excellent deadbolts, all of which are UL listed and built to withstand break-and-enter attacks.

A deadbolt on your door works as a visual deterrent. Criminals see the deadbolt and know they will have to work that much harder to get your Christmas goodies. Other visual deterrents include Mag locks and Strike plates. Mag locks wrap around your deadbolt and double the strength of your door, while strike plates protect your frame from being pried apart. Effective door hardware protects your house from home-invasions and visually reinforces your security. As a visual deterrent, home alarm security stickers can be just as effective as an alarm system. During the holiday season, let the criminals know that your house will not be an easy target.

The Christmas season is filled with parties and celebrations that take you out of your home. Criminals take advantage of the busy holidays by breaking into unoccupied houses. Making your house appear occupied is as simple as leaving the lights on when you are out. The flicker from a television can create a busy and bustling atmosphere in your otherwise empty home. This way, you can enjoy your work parties and Christmas trains without worrying about home security. If a Christmas vacation is your way of bringing in the holiday season, have a friend or neighbour pick up your mail. This way, a cluttered stack of mail will not speak volumes of your absence. Or as a humorous solution, leave a large dog bowl on the front porch with a note that says ‘beware: dog will bite.’

Vehicles are frequently broken into during the holidays. Christmas shopping drives everyone to the malls, while parking lots provide ideal targets for the hungry criminal. When you go shopping, make sure you take your keys/purse/wallet from the vehicle while you are out, and hide all gifts out of site or in the trunk.

Mr. Locksmith is a family owned and operated locksmith company. We recognize just how stressful the holidays can be for everyone. Your time and money are put under extra pressure, and criminals are looking to take advantage of the hectic season. Our technicians are security experts, and are itching to help you secure your home for the holidays. Check out our webpage at http://www.mrlocksmith.com and contact Mr. Locksmith for free estimates and excellent security solutions today!

Each of our Mr. Locksmith Professional locksmiths receive extensive in-house locksmith training on how to pick locks on hundreds of locks in the shop. Mr. Locksmith has ongoing lock picking training and lock picking competitions. Last summer three of our Mr. Locksmiths and I were refused entry to a “Professional Lock Picking” competition because we have perfected a method to open Smart Key locks with a simple pick.

A vital tool for Professional Locksmiths is a plug spinner or lock flipper. A plug spinner is used can if a cylinder is picked in the wrong direction, or if picking requires the plug to be rotated in one direction and then flipped. Sometimes the lock because of wear or manufacturing it will be be easier to pick in one direction. The plug spinner will spin the plug when picked and move the lower pins across shear line without having any drivers drop into lower chambers.

I have several plug spinners in my lock picking kit that will flip the plug to the opposite or unlocked position and they all accomplish the same task, but in slightly different way.

My favorite or every day plug spinner is the A1 Plug Spinner. It is durable and fits in my everyday pick case and I have a spare in my Lock Picking Kit.

My Favorite Plug Spinner

Heavy Duty Plug Spinner (Note: I use this for BMW locks)

In my Lock Picking Kit I have the Pistol of Gun Plug Spinner. I like the larger blade for inserting into automotive locks and the higher tension when you flip the plug. Specifically, I use this plug spinner for BMW locks. You can pick a BMW lock to the locked position easier than the unlocked position. I pick the BMW to the locked position then I use the Pistol Plug Spinner. Note: be careful you can apply too much tension and damage the lock.

Rytan Plug Spinner

Rytan makes an excellent plug spinner and extra tension sprints are inexpensive and easy to replace. I keep one in my Lock Picking Kit but I find it a little bulky for my everyday pick kit but an excellent plug spinner.

Peterson Plug Spinner

HPC Plug Spinner

Various other styles and plug spinners are available. You will need more than one type of plug spinner in your lockout kit. Again, the plug spinner is a time saver, some locks will only pick one way or you just picked it to the locked position instead of the locked position. Just adjust your tension and direction on the plug spinner, insert into the lock and depress the release and the plug will quickly flip to the opposite direction without locking.

In conclusion, Mr. Locksmith Professional BC Licensed and Security cleared (Criminal Records Checked) locksmiths are the best locksmiths to call if you are locked out and need keys. All of us at Mr. Locksmith open locked doors every day in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. And when we are not opening customer lock outs we are practicing lock picking (ask about our Padlock Chain).
