Squirrels Show Softer Side by Adopting Orphans

Red squirrels will adopt pups that have lost their mother if the pups are related to them. Red squirrels live in complete isolation and they are very territorial. The only time they will allow another squirrel on their territory is when the females are ready to mate or when they are nursing their young.

These squirrels will only adopt an orphaned pup when the costs of adoption are low and when the orphans are related…such as siblings, nieces or nephews rather than more distant relatives.

Remarkably, these squirrels are able to assess which pups are related.

Beach Boys Consider 50th Anniversary Reunion

The Beach Boys are going to reunite for at least one concert next year to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

The lineup will include Al Jardine, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and possibly guitarist David Marks.

Says Jardine: “I want to see a 100-date anniversary tour,” he says. “I want to go all around the world, but if this is the way it has to be, then so be it. We’re going to have to rehearse one hell of a show. My point is, if we’re going to rehearse and make this such a wonderful show, we should take it on the road…”

Swimming has helped a cat walk again after being paralyzed.

Nazzaning, a 6-year-old cat, was injured in June and could not move her left side. Her owner took her to the hospital and was told that Nazzaning’s condition was very serious. After an initial hospitalization, the owner inquired about physical therapy for Nazzaning and was told that hydrotherapy might help.

Nazzaning’s treatments consist of 30 minutes of walking on a treadmill beneath 4 to 5 inches of water.

After the treadmill, Nazzaning swims in a 4 1/2-foot pool supported by a therapist to help strengthen her limbs.

Now her balance is better and she is walking unassisted.

These contraptions are still as despised as they were when the first 150 of them were installed in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on July 16, 1935.

As soon as the meters went up, angry residents gave them the thumbs down.

18th Century Ship Hull Discovered at Ground Zero

A new discovery at Ground Zero – the rib of a vessel. The 32-foot-long ship hull was used in the 18th century as part of the fill that extended lower Manhattan into the Hudson River.

Additionally, a 100-pound anchor was found a few yards from the ship hull. The archeologists are not sure if it belongs to the ship. The delicate wood, now exposed to the air, will begin to deteriorate quickly. Archaeologists are racing to record and analyze the vessel.

Rare 90-Year Old Tree Flowers for First Time

A rare tree in Ireland is proving that it’s never too late to try something new. Over 90 years after being planted near Belfast, a Goat Horn Tree is flowering its pale, aromatic blossoms for the very first time ever.

The tree is a descendant of a specimen brought to Ireland from China in 1908.

Researchers have recently discovered two proteins called Mahjong and Lgl that may help to identify how the body’s own cells fight back against cancer cells.

Healthy cells and cancerous cells compete with each other for survival. If healthy cells gain the advantage and surround cancer cells, the cancer cells will die. If the cancerous cells break free, they can continue to divide and grow undisturbed.

Lgl and Mahjong proteins are important in these cells’ competitiveness, influencing which cells will die.

This discovery could lead to new kinds of treatments for tumors, making up more than 80 percent of all cancers.

The Mars rover team members is informally naming features around the rim of Endeavour Crater. The team is making plans to investigate that destination when NASA’s Opportunity rover finally arrives there after many months of travel.

Thanks to a new, super-resolution view of part of Endeavour’s rim, team members can see details that were not discernible in earlier images from the rover. Super-resolution is an imaging technique combining information from multiple pictures of the same target to generate a new image with a higher resolution.

The Pentagon is recommending that the White House award the Medal of Honor to a living soldier. This would be the first time for such an honor since the Vietnam War.

The soldier up for nomination ran through a wall of enemy fire in Afghanistan in the autumn of 2007 in an attempt to push back Taliban fighters who were almost overtaking his squad.

Military officials said his actions saved the lives of about six men.
