Ensure you carry a small amount of cash, as well as your usual bank cards. According to money.co.uk, carrying local currency or pre-payable cash cards is the best way to pay when you are on holiday. This rule of thumb is just as relevant if you are travelling in the UK, as well as if you are travelling abroad. It means that you don’t risk having your cards lost or stolen, and (if you are visiting from a different country) it means you will avoid having to pay any extra charges for using your credit or debit cards abroad. It is particularly important to carry some cash in more rural parts of the country, such as remote areas of Norfolk or the Lake District, because cash machines are harder to find and many small independent shops and pubs don’t have card readers. And you’ll have some very disappointed children if you don’t have enough money on you to buy lollies from the ice cream van!

Remember to bring some of your children’s favourite toys and a generous supply of family-friendly DVDs. Here we look at a handful of walks you can try while you are there. Which one will you attempt?

Aysgarth Falls

There is no reason to tackle a huge walk when you arrive in the Yorkshire Dales. This example is of a fine half day walk that starts in the charming village of West Burton. It begins with a challenging climb to the top of the hill en route to Aysgarth village, although once this climb is complete, so is the hardest part of the walk.

Once in Aysgarth you can make your way east along the river to reach Aysgarth Falls. The map marks out High Force, Middle Force and Lower Force as you make your way towards the waterfall itself. Beyond this you will find Hestholme Bridge, and then you can follow the Ordnance Survey map south back to your starting point in West Burton. The total distance covered is about 2.5 miles.

Horton-in-Ribblesdale circular walk,

A circular walk is always useful if you park your car at the starting point. This walk is just shy of 11 miles so it is designed for the more experienced walker. However it takes you out onto Horton Moor and provides a more challenging circular walk for those who go prepared.

Partway into the walk you will go past Hull Pot – be very careful here because this is where a natural cave collapse took place, leaving a large open hole on the surface. Care is also required to navigate around Black Dub Moss Bog, to emerge safely on the other side. Elsewhere, stiles, dry stone walls and narrow tracks will lead you around the walk and on to Selside before returning you via another route to where you started. If you didn’t partake of the cafe before you left, you will certainly want to now.

Malham Tarn and its connection to the Romans

Perhaps one of the finest walks achievable by many people is the circular walk that takes you past a Roman camp. The walk is some 5.5 miles long, beginning at Street Gate and heading along Mastiles Lane towards the Roman camp.

You’ll wander past New Middle House Farm, but if you take a short detour up the hill you can also see the original farmhouse, which dates back to the 16th century. From there you can return to the original path you were on, heading towards Gordale Beck. In the latter stages of the walk you will reach Malham Tarn, and it is a wonderful reward for your efforts thus far. The shores of the tarn lap at your feet and provide a wonderful excuse to take some photos. The Yorkshire backdrop hugs the water and provides some gorgeous views. On a nice day, after a few hours walking, this provides the perfect place to stop for a leisurely lunch away from the madding crowds. Afterwards get back to your log cabin for a relaxing jacuzzi, you deserve it.
