I was then ready mentally to spend more money into my idea.

Anton is working full-time with me and I wouldn’t look back on that decision.

Why I outsourced the development

Development takes a lot of time and is too enjoyable. I would procrastinate a whole week by developing something new or by tweaking the design rather than do any marketing stuff.

I would also tend to work on the things I’d enjoy coding instead of working on important “details” like streamlining the buying process.

Focusing on the development I couldn’t see how much effort was required in marketing.

Why developers should outsource development?

A developer can talk to a developer.

Being a developer myself it is easy for me to explain what I want to a developer. We talk the same language.

One of the main risks of outsourcing is miscommunication but by removing the barrier of domain language, the risks are reduced.

I know how I would code a requirement myself and sometimes to make myself clear, I simply show him each step I would follow to code the requirement so that he can have a better understanding of what I want. He might not follow the steps I listed and I don’t care about it but what is important is that he understood what I want.

I also know where we can take shortcuts and what solution would require less time to develop. I can say “just hard code that in the view, this will be used only the admin”, he understands what I mean and I spared him 10 hours.

Benefits from outsourcing development

Obviously, since I outsourced development, I have more time and I can spend this time for marketing and blogging. I would probably not be writing this blog post for example.

Another benefit is that I am not working in the business anymore but on the business. I have a higher level view of the whole business.

Each feature I add to TaskArmy costs me money so I am much more disciplined in prioritizing the tasks.

And finally, Anton is a better Ruby on Rails developer than I am (I come from a .NET background) so his expertise is very valuable.

How I found the developer to outsource the development

This is the part where you expect to say: “On TaskArmy we have great developers…”. Well to be honest, only very few developers have listed their services on TaskArmy and at the time I was looking for Ruby on Rails developer, none was available on TaskArmy.

By the way, if you are a good developer and understand that constant communication with your client is important, please list your services on TaskArmy.

What I did is I went on Odesk and looked for a personal assistant who would help me find a developer. That’s right, the plan was to hire someone that help me hire a developer. I was looking for someone I’d pay $3/hour who would look for a developer for me.

This is the ad I posted:

Hi I am looking for someone who can speak perfect English, and who can help me recruit contractors for various areas of my business (web design, marketing, blogging, etc…)
You first tasks would consist in recruiting a Ruby on Rails developer and a blogger for example.

I actually hired two girls for $3/hour each with this ad.

The virtual assistants I hired were “IT recruiters” or “Technical recruiters” from the Philippines. I wanted to find a Filipino developer so I hoped by picking Filipina assistants it would simplify the search because they would use their personal social network. It turned out that they didn’t know anyone good enough and after trying to hire only in the Philippines without success, I opened up the criteria to accept Eastern Europeans.

I wanted to work with a Filipino because he would be in my time zone. The advantage of working with Eastern Europeans is that they are usually very reliable, they speak their mind and the time difference works well too for me (I start my day when he finishes his). They found Anton a great guy a week later. Overall it costed me somewhere around $20.

How we started working together

Like anyone else, I am not comfortable sharing my intellectual property with someone I don’t know who lives on the other side of the world. So originally I gave him an independent project that didn’t have any dependency with TaskArmy. Then slowly, as I grew more comfortable with him, I gave him more and more access to TaskArmy’s core code.

His first task on the TaskArmy source code was to write a team time zone visualizer. It was an independent tool that was not relying on any existing model in the core which made it a nice introduction to TaskArmy’s source code.

To describe the tool I wanted to Anton, I used OneNote to quickly draw a mockup:

The first version he came up with looked like that, which was spot on what I wanted:

And this is what it looks today after a few iterations:

Anyway, progressively Anton started working deeper and deeper inside the source code and recently he has rewrote part of the payment processing.

Conclusion

It is not the first time I outsource development work and it doesn’t always work. Before Anton I had hired another developer to work on the same micro project and he was not responsive enough.

The important in outsourcing is to fire fast if things are not smooth so that you can find someone better. The less time you spend with a bad performing provider, the less painful outsourcing as a concept feels.

Outsourcing also makes sense financially if you are doing some consulting work on the side. One day of consulting may cover the cost of several days (or several weeks) of a freelancer in a country with lower cost of living. The folks preparing for an election found that a short stack of paper worked as well as 30 laptop computers -and cost a lot less. That reminds us of the story of the toothpaste factory that had a problem detecting empty toothpaste boxes at the end of the assembly line.

Understanding how important that was, the CEO of the toothpaste factory got the top people in the company together and they decided to start a new project, in which they would hire an external engineering company to solve their empty boxes problem, as their engineering department was already too stretched to take on any extra effort.

The project followed the usual process: budget and project sponsor allocated, RFP, third-parties selected, and six months (and $8 million) later they had a fantastic solution — on time, on budget, high quality and everyone in the project had a great time. They solved the problem by using some high-tech precision scales that would sound a bell and flash lights whenever a toothpaste box weighing less than it should. The line would stop, and someone had to walk over and yank the defective box out of it, pressing another button when done.

A while later, the CEO decides to have a look at the ROI of the project: amazing results! No empty boxes ever shipped out of the factory after the scales were put in place. Very few customer complaints, and they were gaining market share. “That’s some money well spent!” – he says, before looking closely at the other statistics in the report.

It turns out, the number of defects picked up by the scales was 0 after three weeks of production use. It should’ve been picking up at least a dozen a day, so maybe there was something wrong with the report. He filed a bug against it, and after some investigation, the engineers come back saying the report was actually correct. The scales really weren’t picking up any defects, because all boxes that got to that point in the conveyor belt were good.

Puzzled, the CEO travels down to the factory, and walks up to the part of the line where the precision scales were installed. A few feet before it, there was a $20 desk fan, blowing the empty boxes out of the belt and into a bin.

“Oh, that — one of the guys put it there ’cause he was tired of walking over every time the bell rang”, says one of the workers.

Some have pointed out that the simple solution would not have been found if the complicated scheme hadn’t been put into effect; others say a cash incentive to the line workers would have done the job. Whether the story is true or not, it illustrates the importance of thinking simple when possible. Link -via a comment at Hacker News/Metafilter

(Image credit: Flickr member Gustavo Durán)
 http://www.neatorama.com/2011/06/13/a-simple-solution/
-

Posted via email from Logger.info

However, many investment experts seem unimpressed with returns from condominium investments and for a good reason.

The bigger question to ask is why are you consideringpurchasing a condominium unit? Is your purpose purely for capital gain or do you intend to live in that condo? I always say that when we select our investment options, we need to take a closer look at our investment objective, risk tolerance and time frame.

In this case, are you already certain as to the three I mentioned?

Assuming that you already have those questions answered, is investing in a condo a good idea then? The question is rather difficult to answer with utmost objectivity.

Firstly, it is difficult to ascertain the actual rate of return for condominiums. It can be very good for some projects and very dismal for others. Location and developer play a big role in determining the growth rate for condos, but these do not guarantee high returns. There are very good developers who develop condominium units that do not appreciate as much as expected. However, there are some developments that register substantial growth in just a few years.

Condo units are real estate and are an asset class. Real estate remains one of the most preferred investments of Filipinos. It will always be a good part of your investment portfolio because it gives the investor peace of mind and it is a simplified asset preservation tool.

When properly selected and the purchase is done in a prudent manner as to cost, condo units like other realestate properties can provide asset appreciation while income at the same time—like having your cake and eating it, too. Such costs can be substantial and can largely dilute the appreciation of the property.

Further, a condominium unit is not always easy to sell, so be prepared to lower selling price if you are in a rush to liquidate your asset—or wait until there is a buyer, which can take many months, even years.

Reading my answer probably made you more confused right? Well, there are no perfect answers to questions like “best investment,” as money issues are always relative. Investing in a condo can be part of your asset class in your diversified portfolio.

As to a condo appreciating in value, well, only time can tell. In the end, you will make many investments and the returns will vary—some might even cause you to lose money but hey, that’s life.

Buying the condo unit on credit will make the scenario very different as you now have to contend with interest that can actually dilute your investment.

I hope my answer helped instead of confused you. Always remember to be prudent and don’t forget to diversify. No investment is perfect, better have many options.

“But divide your investments among many places, for you do not know what risks might lie ahead.”—Ecclesiastes 11:2 (NLT).

(Randell Tiongson, RFP, is an advocate of Life & Personal Finance. He plays Guitar Hero, shoots hoops with his friends, and has a platonic girlfriend.

But in other ways, he's a little different. Jake, who has an IQ of 170, began solving 5,000-piece jigsaw puzzles at the age of 3, not long after he'd been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism. A few years later, he taught himself calculus, algebra, and geometry in two weeks. By 8, he had left high school, and is currently taking college-level advanced astrophysics classes—while tutoring his older classmates. And he's being recruited for a paid researcher job by Indiana University.

Now, he's at work on a theory that challenges the Big Bang—the prevailing explanation among scientists for how the universe came about. It's not clear how developed it is, but experts say he's asking the right questions.

"The theory that he's working on involves several of the toughest problems in astrophysics and theoretical physics," Scott Tremaine of Princeton University's Institute for Advanced Studies—where Einstein (pictured) himself worked—wrote in an email to Jake's family. "Anyone who solves these will be in line for a Nobel Prize."

Here you can watch Jake question some of the key elements of Albert Einstein's theories on quantum physics:

It's not clear where Jake got his gifts from. "Whenever I try talking about math with anyone in my family," he<a href="http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/yblog_thelookout/ts_yblog_thelookout/storytext/for-12-year-old-astrophysics-prodigy-the-skys-the-limit/40872194/SIG=1216210t1/*http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2011103200369" style="color: #0058a6; text-decoration: none;">told the Indianapolis Star, "they just stare blankly."

But his parents encouraged his interests from the start. Once, they took him to the planetarium at Butler University. "We were in the crowd, just sitting, listening to this guy ask the crowd if anyone knew why the moons going around Mars were potato-shaped and not round," Jake's mother, Kristine Barnett, told the Star. "Jacob raised his hand and said, 'Excuse me, but what are the sizes of the moons around Mars?' That they can outlast 12 regular light bulbs? That they’ll make you save tens of thousands of dollars by switching to them? That those who did not switch to CFL did not care about the planet (and are therefore eco-terrorist)? Well, I hope you did not fall for this crap. Since 2007, numerous studies proved that CFLs contained dangerous amounts of mercury which, as seen in the VC article entitled Dumbing Down Society Part 2: Mercury in Foods and Vaccines, caused brain neuron degeneration. In other words, it makes you dumber. When these bulbs break (which often happens when thrown in the garbage), the mercury contained within is released.

Other recent studies proved an another type of eco-friendly bulb, the LED’s (used in new generation Christmas lights) also contained high levels of toxic chemicals. Here’s an article fromNatural News on the subject.

Though the notion now borders on political incorrectness among many environmentalists, the simple incandescent light bulb is still the cleanest, most non-toxic form of consumer lighting available. A new study published by the University of California – Irvine (UCI) has found that popular energy-saving LED light bulbs are filled with high levels of lead, arsenic, and various other toxic chemicals.

Much like hazardous compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which numerous investigations have shown contain dangerously high levels of mercury that damage human health and pollute the environment, the LED bulbs used in things like Christmas lights, traffic signals, and vehicle headlights, may be just as bad.

Oladele Ogunseitan, professor of public health and social ecology at UCI and lead author of the new study, and his team, crushed a variety of different LED bulbs to expose their internal chemicals. They then simulated an acid-rain scenario to see how the chemicals in the bulbs would react, and what the resulting liquid would be composed of.

They found that high-intensity red LED bulbs contained the highest levels of arsenic, a toxic element that damages cells and leads to cardiovascular problems, among other things. And low-intensity red LED bulbs were found to have the highest levels of lead, a toxic heavy metal that damages bones, the heart, intestines, kidneys, and the reproductive and nervous systems. White bulbs had high level of nickel, another potentially damaging metal that can cause skin problems.

In a landfill situation, broken LED bulbs can contaminate ground water supplies, rivers, streams, and lakes. In individual homes, the breakage of such bulbs is similar to CFLs in that careful cleanup is necessary as the residue is highly toxic. And even when taking precautions, bulb fumes and their corresponding chemicals can get into carpet and other hard-to-clean places, exposing young children to untold levels of such toxins over long periods of time.

Employees at Nu-life Industries wear a hazmat suit when breaking CFL bulbs to protect them from mercury poisoning. Honestly, I didn't know the "The Triangle of Life". Perhaps it has been taught in school before or I was informed by somebody but it didn't register in my mind. The recent unfortunate events in Japan made us all aware of what could have beens in the future. I am thankful that we are safe right now. My prayers to all who have suffered in these recent events.

Please take some time to read the article below:

Where to Go During an Earthquake

Remember that stuff about hiding under a table or standing in a doorway? Well, forget it! This is a real eye opener. It could save your life someday.

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON 'THE TRIANGLE OF LIFE'

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI ), the world's most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake.

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a member of many rescue teams from many countries. I was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years, and have worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene -- unnecessary.

Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them - NOT under them. This space is what I call the 'triangle of life'. The larger the object, the stronger, the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. The next time you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the 'triangles' you see formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a collapsed building.
TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

1) Most everyone who simply 'ducks and covers' when building collapse are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed.

2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a bed, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or large chair.

6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed!

7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different 'moment of frequency' (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged.

8) Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible - It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked.

9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.

10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper.

Spread the word and save someone's life...
If you’re a woman, it may cost well over $50 a visit. Dying your hair? You’re broke!

Use Time as a Measurement for Success – The millionaire next door measures success based on output quality, the results. The amount of time spent on something means nothing if the results do not meet the expectations.

Buy Brand New Cars – Why would anyone pay the full retail price worth half a year’s salary for the fastest depreciating assent on Earth? We are brainwashed!

Carry a Monthly Credit Card Balance – Carrying a monthly credit card balance only makes sense if you enjoy poverty. Monthly interest payments can add up to hundreds of dollars over the course of a year. Do not buy “stuff” right now that you cannot afford to pay for in cash right now!

Eat Out on a Regular Basis – With the recent price increases in corn, wheat and dairy products, preparing your own food is already expensive enough. If you eat out you will pay triple the price. If done on a regular basis you will waste a few thousand dollars a year.

Think He Knows It All – People who think they know it all stop learning and thus become unaware of new opportunities. The millionaire next door desires long-term deferred compensation over instant gratification.

Pay Retail for Name Brand Clothing – You can easily save hundreds of dollars a year on clothing purchases by waiting for sales or shopping at discount retailers like Marshalls. Better yet, avoid name brand clothing all together.

Keep His Money in a Checking Account – If you want to increase your wealth you have to set your money up to make more money. Most checking accounts yield little to nothing in interest. Think long-term (5 years +). Invest in quality stocks, bonds and mutual funds, especially those with high yield dividends and interest. Or buy some land in an area with growth potential.

Replace What is Not Broken – The millionaire next door fixes things. If you’re a woman, it may cost well over $50 a visit. Dying your hair? You’re broke!

Use Time as a Measurement for Success – The millionaire next door measures success based on output quality, the results.
