Morris has trained thousands of Logos users at his two-day Camp Logos seminars and provides many training materials.

One of the many powerful aspects of Logos is its ability to take us English students back to the original languages of the Bible, even though we may not be language scholars. Logos accomplishes this through the reverse interlinear option. Many of the questions I receive are related to the reverse interlinear, such as this one a Logos user recently sent:

How do I search for 2 Greek words within proximity of each other? For example:
grace WITHIN 5 words righteousness (grace and righteousness in original languages)

I answered a similar question a few months ago in a blog, but since this is a common question I’ll address it again from a slightly different angle.

Open an English Bible (containing the reverse interlinear) to a passage, such as Colossians 1:2, containing the first word you want to locate. (1)

Right click on a word such as grace . (2)

Select Lemma | Search this resource. (3)(4)

Take the Bible to a passage, such as Matthew 3:15, containing your second word.

Right click on your word such as righteousness.

Select Lemma | Search this resource.

Notice you now have two search panels open.

Add this text to the search query in the first search panel: WITHIN 5 words.

Copy and paste the search query text from the second search panel to the first.

Make sure the query looks like this:

Use the drop down lists to adjust the search ranges.

Press the Enter key to initiate the search.

Logos now locates all the occurrences of these two Greek words within five words of each other—in your English Bible!

Please note these very important observations:

If the search type is set to Bible then both terms have to be in the same verse!

If the search type is set to Basic then both terms have to be in the same chapter!

If you enjoyed this tip about using English Bibles to accomplish original language work, then you’ll benefit from Camp Logos Live 2 DVD training which highlights numerous ways for English students to dig into Hebrew and Greek using Logos.

How has digging into the Hebrew and Greek helped your study of the Bible? Leave a comment and let us know!

P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt

In 1897, two archeologists stumbled upon the greatest cache of papyrus manuscripts ever discovered. B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt’s discovery of over two thousand manuscripts buried in a trash heap in the sands of Oxyrhynchus was a watershed event for New Testament and lexicography studies.

The Oxyrhynchus Papyri, as they’ve come to be known, date from as early as the first century CE all the way through the ninth century CE. They include literary works from Homer, Plato, and Sophocles, as well as other important works from antiquity. Also buried in the sands were some of the earliest manuscript witnesses to the New Testament writings. Among these discoveries were fragments of Matthew 1, Romans 1, and 1 John 4, parts of 1 Corinthians and Philippians, and a leaf from Revelation. These discoveries gave paleographers and lexicographers new manuscripts to analyze and compare with the thousands already at their disposal.

Why Is This Discovery Important for New Testament Studies?

Before the discovery of the Oxyrhynchus Papyri, New Testament Greek was often called “Holy Ghost Greek.” This referred to the unusual style and syntax used by New Testament authors in their writings. Scholars like Adolf Deissmann and J. H. Moulton noted that the style of the New Testament was similar to that of personal letters, informal notes, and other non-literary documents found amongst the other Oxyrhynchus Papyri manuscripts. The discovery of the papyri put to rest the theory of a divinely inspired Greek language and allowed scholars to analyze the language of the New Testament alongside contemporary first-century writings.

Having the Oxyrhynchus Papyri (vols. 1–15) in your Logos library allows you to do serious textual studies first-hand. For anyone engaged in textual criticism, the Oxyrhynchus Papyri are an indispensable tool. Instead of doing research based on what other experts say, you can engage in critical research with the primary sources themselves! What’s more, included with the Greek inscriptions are discussions on particular examples, translations with line-by-line commentary and the reasoning behind textual reconstructions, and references to relevant parallels. So even if your Greek is not as good as it once may have been, the Oxyrhynchus Papyri (vols. 1–15) is still a valuable reference tool for contextual study of the New Testament.

The Oxyrhynchus Papyri are on Community Pricing, and what makes Community Pricing so great is that it lets you set the price! The final price will be the lowest one with enough bids to cover production costs. To snag a copy of the Oxyrhynchus Papyri (vols. 1-15) at the lowest possible price, all you have to do is make sure your bid is at or above the final community bid.

Place your bid now, and tell everyone that might be interested in this resource to bid too. The more who bid, the quicker this goes into production at the lowest possible price!

If you pay careful attention, you might notice new links and other obvious updates. But most of the updates happen under the hood—like updates to milestones, data types, and other pieces of functionality that make Logos books shine.
Here’s an example of the work we did on one of our resources, the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary.

Updating the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary

The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary is just under 7,300,000 words long. After looking at user-submitted typo reports and going over the entire dictionary ourselves, we identified around 800 typos, and fixed all of them. Or, to put it differently, we went from 99.989% accuracy to as close to 100% as possible. (I’m hesitant to say we hit 100%, because with a work this big, it’s inevitable that we—and all our users—missed one.)

This is even more impressive when you consider that 20% of the words in the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary are in languages other than English: Aramaic, Danish, German, Greek, Spanish, French, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Latin, Dutch, Norwegian, and a few other languages. There are also 61,141 words transliterated into English. That means finding typos is a little more complicated than running a spellchecker.

How We Fix Typos

Fixing typos isn’t as clear cut as it sounds. For some words, there isn’t a clear consensus on the correct spelling, like gray and grey. And a surprisingly large number of typos aren’t actually typos—they’re submitted by U.S. users encountering U.K. spelling, and vice versa. Many U.K. users report words like center as a typo, but U.S. users report centre. (As a general rule, we follow the print edition.) Other words are reported because they’re unfamiliar: we’ve received multiple reports of pine nut as a typo, with pine cone as the suggested correction. But a pine nut is a real thing, and it’s possibly referenced in Song of Songs 6:11.

For some of our resources, it’s not unusual to check a typo report against the print edition, only to find the typo exists in print as well. Fortunately this isn’t a problem with the print edition of the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary, but with 22,000 books in Logos, there are bound to be typos even in well-proofed print source material. But unlike print, the Logos edition can be updated.

More Than Typo Updates

In addition to the typo fixes in the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary, we also added 4,810 bibliographic milestones. We added links for 39,080 bibliographic citations—both to resources already in your library and to resources that don’t yet exist, but will someday. We also linked thousands of references to 61 new data types.

The Anchor Bible Dictionary is just one of around 22,000 resources available in Logos. At any given time, we’re making thorough updates to hundreds of books, adding links, functionality, and other tweaks to make your books shine in current and future versions of Logos. All the updates work on all your devices—Mac, PC, iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and Biblia.com. You always have access to the latest and greatest.

The best part? You get the updates automatically—absolutely free.

There’s nothing extra you need to do to get the latest, polished version. Nothing to buy. Nothing to click. It all happens in the background, all for free.

That means if you own the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary, you already have all the updates described above. If you don’t own it, now is the perfect time to get it.

Here’s an example of the work we did on one of our resources, the <a href="http://www.logos.com/product/1660/anchor-yale-bible-dictionary">Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary</a>.

<a href="http://www.logos.com/product/1660/anchor-yale-bible-dictionary?utm_source=logostalk&#038;utm_medium=blog&#038;utm_content=textlink&#038;utm_campaign=product"><img class="alignright" title="Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary" src="http://www.logos.com/product/1660/anchor-yale-bible-dictionary.jpg" alt="" width="257" height="174" /></a>
<h2>Updating the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary</h2>
The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary is just under <strong>7,300,000 words long.</strong> After looking at user-submitted typo reports and going over the entire dictionary ourselves, we identified around 800 typos, and fixed all of them. Or, to put it differently, we went from 99.989% accuracy to as close to 100% as possible. (I’m hesitant to say we hit 100%, because with a work this big, it’s inevitable that we—and all our users—missed one.)

Logos 4: “Advantage Logos”

Today’s post is from Morris Proctor, certified and authorized trainer for Logos Bible Software.
I am often asked at Camp Logos something like this:

What’s the difference between a Logos book and an Amazon Kindle book? Why should I buy a book in the Logos format as opposed to another electronic format?

Great questions. Various differences elevate Logos books above other formats, but perhaps none more so than the level of tagging in our Logos books.

Rather than explain what I mean, I’ll offer a specific example:

Open a Bible to Luke 9:61.

Open the resource Moral Foundations of Life by Oswald Chambers.

Right click on any word in Luke 9:61. (1)

From the right click menu select Reference Luke 9:61 | Search all open resources. (2)(3)

In the Search panel click By Title to arrange the search hits according to the title of the book. (4)

Click the triangle icon to the left of Moral Foundations of Life to expand the search hits. (5)

Notice in the search hits of the resource, the characters Luke 9:61 do not exist, but the words Lord, I will follow Thee do. (6)

Click a search hit to open Moral Foundations of Life to that location. (7)

In the resource rest your cursor on the words Lord, I will follow Thee to see a preview of Luke 9:61 from your Preferred Bible.

Here’s the point I’m making with this example:

When we search our Logos books for Luke 9:61 the system will find Luke 9:61 or Lk 9:61 or verse 61 or Lord, I will follow Thee. Why? Because somehow the Logos book developers have tagged all of those as references to Luke 9:61!

So remember, when you’re reading Logos books, you’re reading multiple levels of tagging that are also networked with the rest of your Logos library!
