How to Introduce Lolita Fashion to NYFW - Victorian Maiden at Global Fashion Collective

Lolita fashion will forever be an outlier fashion; even as the style is slowly integrated into the mainstream, with elements seen in Hot Topic and the like. Majority of the time a Lolita fashion show is unheard of unless you attend an anime or comic convention where they are brought out as a guest.

At New York Fashion Week this is even rarer.

Global Fashion Collective aims to bring smaller, international designers to the forefront and a chance for their collections be viewed at an even wider, iconic audience like at NYFW. And to my surprise, Victorian Maiden was featured this year.

The last time New York Fashion Week showcased a Lolita fashion focused designer was in 2016 where Souffle Song (a Chinese Lolita fashion brand) was selected as part of Nolcha Shows.

It's interesting to note that Victorian Maiden was placed under the “Evening wear” showcase which is often interpreted as code for be as fancy as you want – which ultimately Lolita fashion tends to encapsulate. Since this is not an anime or comic convention where say a good number of attendees have a basic understanding of Lolita fashion, it makes you wonder what the reaction is for regular goers.

There is always this hidden controversy when you hear “Lolita” attached to anything. Sexual. Underaged. Manipulative. Victorian Maiden is and has always been the opposite. And for this collection they presented it as how Japan has always viewed it – inspired by Victorian and Rococo fashion.

Naturally it's always a spectacle. Instead of face-valued expectation of anatomy revealing we are presented with modesty - and we are left gaping in awe. All we can really do is take a photo to preserve that moment and initial feeling.

For Victorian Maiden this is a show to celebrate their "25th anniversary" so to the unseen eye all the dresses would be entirely new. However it was a mixture of new and old pieces if you were familiar with the brand.

Beginning with the two models posing as “twins” dressed in a Regimental fabric in a Classical Doll style (a design that is used often in their brand). To an outsider this is cute perhaps reminiscent of the Shining or the original historic-based American Girl dolls. To the Japanese fashion enthusiast this is a regular pose that Lolitas have lovingly embraced in twins, triplets, and even sextuplets. Continuing with a Sherlock Holmes style coat and more jumperskirts in black or navy hues. The collection itself starts with a darker color palette to a lighter was also a good choice for an unknown audience as it makes Lolita fashion more palpable.

They ends more with a lighter and indulgent style with more gown-like inspiration with original toile print fabrics. Designs you could definitely see being worn at the next Bridgerton Experience.

Lastly, I really liked the choice of only having their second last piece with a cage-style petticoat (or at least the obvious extra detail of fashion enhancement). While a bell-shaped petticoat has defined the Lolita silhouette it's hard to see that as regular wear in present day fashion. It's impractical. However Lolita fashion is not meant to be practical. It's frivolous and fun. With the model's twirl before walking back it sends the message, "Yes, this is a doable if I want to wear it".

Victorian Maiden has always kept their focus on design and textiles rather than flamboyant nostalgia-focused prints. With the focus on design elements like laces, ruffles and pleats it really puts your focus on the talent rather than the generalized assumption of Lolita (i.e. a coquette aesthetic with Nabokov-esque undertones). I found this especially important for Fashion Week, as this is period of time is always the opportunity for what we should view as fashion in general; not necessarily what to expect in the upcoming seasons. The show itself really is a collection of how far Victorian Maiden or even just Lolita itself has come.

Talking with a few other audience goers they really genuine loved it. It was fashion. There were pieces you could see yourself wearing everyday. Often collections made for Fashion Week is not always made for daily wear - it was seen wearable which I think is most important. Especially for such a niche misunderstood fashion.

Level Up: Kitsby's Cookie and Cream Puff Kit Review

Baking has always been a form stress relief for me and living through this pandemic it's escalated to making something at least once a week. From cookies to madeleines to melon pan to swiss rolls. Put all the restless energy you would expend by going outside and socializing has been put into making something that could be delicious to share (contactless, of course) and eat.

Kitsby is a small Williamsburg cafe bakery that creates unique sweets with bar style setup and course style menu. They have also been currently selling DIY kits and mixes for savvy bakers, and Dessert Boxes for savvy eaters that are available for delivery or pickup in NYC. The Dessert Boxes have enough sweets to theoretically last a week.

I decided on the Cookies and Cream Puff kit. The suggested level was Advanced but I felt I was ready!

Experience:

The nice thing about this kit it gives you all the ingredients and most of the supplies (pastry bag, parchment paper) you need along with a recipe booklet with instructions. It even comes with a 20% coupon on your next Kitsby purchase.

All the parts (choux pastry, cream filling, craquelin) are packaged separately with their own ingredients and labeled. No need to measure anything or realize you forgot to add something. It does tell you what you need like butter, water, and general baking supplies (bowls, hand mixer). All you needed to do was follow the instructions and open said ingredient.

In addition you should have filling leftover to try again yourself or for another baking adventure! Or just eat it out of the bowl; I won't judge.

Troubleshooting my own fail:

What got vs What I needed

There were only three issues.

The instructions for the cream puff shell was not clear when creating the last part of the dough. I wasn't sure what was the right texture and it didn't specify. The piped dough was too runny and as a result the cream puffs were flat. Only after looking online at other recipes did I realize I should've mixed the batter longer after the cooking step and to really wait after adding each egg to thicken for the ribbon texture you need. So I quickly made a second batch to get the result I needed.

The second problem was with the cream. The cookies will need to be crushed more because if it's too chunky they will get stuck as you try to pipe it into the puff shell.

The third was when pouring the craquelin mixture onto the parchment the cookie it did not mix with the butter evenly. When it came time to cut out circles I was searching for solid areas. Next time I would pile the mixture onto the paper as close as possible and flatten out so the butter absorbed the cocoa power and sugar better.

However these were more my mistakes than Kitsby's.

Overall A- :

I really liked the experience of Kitsby's kit and the ease it gives for a "baked by from scratch" feeling. It does suggest an Advanced level but it felt more like an Advanced Intermediate because everything was measured out for you and it only required you to have eggs and butter.

The instructions would need to be a little clear so you know you've achieved the right texture and look at the end of each step. However if you know how to fix your mistake, kudos on you. But when in doubt start again (if you can).

You will need some prior experience for baking. I would definitely NOT choose this as a first kit if you've never baked anything before. However if you're willing to give it a shot I definitely would go for it!

What is Lolita Fashion Like During Coronavirus?

From a general perspective Lolita or any alternative fashion always has a big social component. However -- what happens when you take it away? Surprisingly, like fashion in general – the community as a whole MADE IT WORK.

It's been a few months since New York City was declared a hotspot for the coronavirus. And while cases are going down, we're not out of the woods yet. What has impressed me though is seeing the community rise up and still remain active. To some, after all, it is our therapy and this is a time where we need it most.

You still take outfit shots; you still host meetups; you still host fashion panels. Your coordinate post offers even more of a glimpse into your rooms and personal style. It provides a window on how much this fashion has integrated into your lifestyle. Instead of structured pose, you concentrate on the coordinate you were inspired by, blurry self-facing camera and fluorescent lighting and all. Then there's the Pass the Brush challenge (check out They/Goth, Black Lolita Pt 2, Boston Lolita, NY Lolita) which gave you a glimpse of people in and out of alternative fashion – the perfect visual example that alternative fashion takes work and practice.

Violet Fane and Peppermint Fox created a "Cozy Cottage Moments" prompt early on keep you active and inspired when the world was uncertain how long we would stay in our homes. If you've already participated, why not recycle and create new ideas from the same prompt?

Baby is offering masks as a novelty for purchase over $150

Indie brands rose up and like everyone else, started making masks. You coordinated to match your outfits like it was an existing accessory – except now it's functional to boot. Currently Japanese brands are postponing shipping overseas, the internet still allows you to see what's going on. They've also taking up mask making, selling out like popular print releases.

At Home Lolita Project X Harajuku Pop Contest promoted a solidarity that we are still fashionably at home and Lolita is not necessarily only for tea parties and meetups. Who says Lolita is dead?

Conventions have taken themselves virtual to remind you you are not alone, simply physically distanced. If you missed Purgatorio's event check out some of the past content.

The Invisible Weight of Worrying

You've been invited to a meetup. You've planned your outfit and are ready to head out the door. Then it hits you. Is this outfit OK? Why didn't I wear X/Y/Z? Do I have enough time to get there? I got here too early am I at the right place? What if I don't know anyone? What's the app that filters out all the flaws? Should I hang out afterwards or go home? Will anyone like me?

I am constantly asked “is there drama?” when people want to get into Lolita or ask about the local community. Sometimes their response is “I'm not part of the community because I don't want to deal with drama.” Drama implies that you are already part of a close-knit group but if you've hardly attended an event there's no reason for this logic. It also implies you should be social whether you like it or not. Sometimes its more about what you think others will think of you than what others will say about you. Whatever negative thoughts you have before you even start it is probably that fear of the unknown.

It's very easy to say “Just do it” when someone wants to get into Lolita fashion. Sometimes it's not so simple. It's natural to have fears and worries and feelings of inadequacy, especially when your new at something. When you want to meet up with other like minded people you want to impress them with your knowledge and style take.

Sometimes you will amaze people and be talk of the town. Sometimes you feel like you said something wrong, hate yourself afterwards and replay that moment over and over. And over.

As I'm getting older I find the community less important to me because that's not the core reason I wanted to embrace this fashion. When I started out I wanted to find like minded people because I was new to the city and wanted to connect to others with similar interests. I have and did and I'm extremely thankful for the weird emotional support group that I've created for myself. Not only that but in general, I am not very comfortable talking to people overall. At first I felt that it was just nerves and thought the best way to overcome this was putting myself in as many social situations as possible. However now it still feels awkward and disingenuous no matter how many times I've hung out with people.

Like most tribes, you can get sucked into a group mentality. The feeling of being included all the time is strong. That group picture would validate you as a Lolita if you go to every event. Going to every outing is emotionally exhausting but to say you were there also makes worth it. Keeping up to date on the latest trends and brand releases takes a toll on your wallet but you have the envious attention that feels important. You tell yourself you need to do these things to feel like you belong.

So is getting into Lolita fashion worth it? That's up to you.

I will say that due to job changes and monetary reasons I stopped going to meetups. Life simply got in the way as it always does. I no longer really cared about the latest series (This is a lie but I am able to ask myself is this a want versus a need?). Not only that but I'm constantly battling social anxiety and lack of self worth that I was telling myself that I don't deserve it to the point everything in garbage bags because it was too stressful a process to sell my entire closet.

But the FOMO grew extensively especially with social media. Everything should be curated to create that personality you believe is defined as “Lolita.” If you do this you feel it will give you the validation that you belong.

A few years ago, I hadn't gone to a big event in years and I thought maybe I was fine and it there was a guest I wanted meet for the first time. I could be there as if I never left being part of a group. In reality I was afraid to do anything as soon as I arrived. I felt there was a certain procedure to follow even though there wasn't. I could barely converse with people I had known for quite a few years. I felt out of touch and the social pressure overwhelmed me seeing others converse so smoothly and effortlessly. The negative feelings of being not on pointe and being the unintentional wallflower stuck. It wasn't my fault, just that little voice that is second guessing everything who happens to be VERY LOUD. For the rest of the afternoon I panicked when I should've engaged. I froze. I no longer felt like I belonged because I hadn't been going to every meetup I was invited to or wanted to take selfies. I ushered myself out as the host said event was over when I should've said goodbyes that would last way too long to the people I knew.

For the record, this is my personal experience. I'm not saying you shouldn't be part of the community. You should at least try. You can find the truest of friends and you can also discover new skills you never thought you could do because you found a style that speaks to you.

If that latest MTO dress makes you genuinely happy and you have the funds, go for it. If you want to go to a meetup to see friends or just show off a new coordinate, go for it. If you want to post on social media about how amazing Lolita makes you feel -- reading this shouldn't stop you.

However it's not negating the fact you can also panic and worry and paralyze yourself into extreme disassociation and severe anxiety attacks. And that's OK too. You've learned it's not for you. If you feel more comfortable with close friends, do that. If you can only hang out one on one, do that. If you prefer going solo, be that lone wolf.

You are still part of the community in your own way.

Ten years later: Just be yourself

New York is where you find yourself, which for me was discovering Lolita fashion. Since I was in high school I was always fascinated by the bell-shaped skirts and lace-trimmed bonnets that were clearly inspired by another time (but still entirely unique). I could never fathom wearing something so outrageous down the street let alone meeting people who actually wore the fashion. Staring at the Baby, Stars Shine Bright website to distract me from college essays was enough. I could never bring myself to think to wear clothes like that in real life.

Then I moved to New York for various reasons: the probability of a job was higher, closer to my boyfriend (now husband), to get away from my parents and finally be the adult you're supposed to be (whatever that was). Of course, moving to the big city after a childhood in the suburbs can be an overwhelming experience and you're not sure how to survive alone. You drift to what you're comfortable with - which ends up to be anime and fashion. In the early ideas of New York Anime Festival, I was able to talk to people who loved to dress up and discover that they were just regular people who wanted to express themselves. It fascinated me; it also made me curious. What compels people to wear such elaborate clothes that was clearly different from cosplay. Who are actually these people? How much confidence do you need to be so cool?

In the end, they were just people who loved to dress up no matter the day or the occassion.

I had those qualms like everyone else:

"Am I too old to dress up?"

"It's so expensive"

"People will look at me funny."

"What will happen once I get married/have kids."

Once I acquired my first job (after a year of nothing!) I knew exactly what to spend it on. It was an In the Starlight skirt with cats on it and a petticoat. At the time $100 was crazy amount. I still thought the skirt was crazy. At first I just hung out with friends, feeling comfortable in numbers. But we're in New York, so eventually I wanted to venture out alone. I wanted to prove to this city I exist; that I am my own creative, unique individual. I can be just like that old school punk in Grand Central. Going out alone for the first time I had real confidence. Not in others but myself. People strangely opened doors for me. They never looked at me funny; in fact just compliments but rarely pictures. They respected it (for the most part). It's cool. No big deal. New York is filled with crazy stuff. That's what makes New York, New York.

The rest is history - I was on the road to finding that "real you." Lolita fashion was no longer seen as a costume; it was just clothes that expressed who I wanted to be on the inside. I created this website. I read Lolita and found nothing but a good read. I started an Etsy shop that combines both a love of crochet and Lolita and the like. I held a 101 panel at a convention. I adopted a cat (and lost one a year and half later). Some of those "weird people" are now friends I hold dear. That's what living in New York is all about. We are all living in New York trying to survive and trying to find our true selves.

The NYC Lolita community is no different. There are more of us than in 2008. A lot more. There's are actually stores you can shop in now. No shopping service to translate Japanese, except for the truly elusive item. Everything is much more accessible to the new generation it makes me jealous. We all love this weird frilly fashion and that is our bond. Lolita can be seen as armor, to protect you from people who cannot see the way you do. It is also a calling card to those that do. I see it as bringing out your confidence and true potential. It's that wellspring of confidence that you gravitate to like a moth to a flame. It is the same with living in New York City.

New York hardens you a bit. Whether you have been here all your life or you've come to experience the big city, in order to survive this city you have to make it work for you. Otherwise it will chew you up, tumble you in an overheated lint-filled dryer, and wait an incredibly long time before spitting you out. It's a constant hustle. You'll feel lost a lot and forget why you want to be here - but then you'll pull out a beloved print and forget all those feelings just for a moment.

Lolita, and overall alternative fashion, hardens you a bit more. It helps you find that piece of yourself that inspires you to improve, to create, to grow as a person. It also helps you thicken your skin to insults and misunderstandings. Only you can dictate who you want to be.

If after a decade you are still figuring things out that's ok. If you are starting to feel a little bit lost, that's ok too. If you have to let go, let go.

Most of all, remember not to stop whether you're graduating from wearing Lolita or are still loving every minute of it. Once you've found what you truly love (what's true to you), keep going forward and never, ever look back.

6 Cool Recipes to Survive the Rest of Summer

With the weather being so humid I've been doing my best to avoid the kitchen and heating up small apartment. Here are some simple recipes I've been referring to most of the summer.

Cold Brew Iced Coffee - When it's too hot to make an iced coffee run, pouring one from your fridge is not too bad either.
Chia Seed Pudding - Add cinnamon for flavor and frozen fruit that will quickly thaw before you know it as you browse your Instagram or Twitter feed for the day.
Lavender Lemonade - This was a popular trend at the start of summer but never got around to trying it until now. Lavender by the Bay's stall at the Union Square GreenMarket always makes it easy to grab some on your way home.
Banana Crumb Cake - Take advantage of those rare cool days. Bake and eat. Cut into 4 big slices, throw it freeze and you have breakfast to last you the next few weeks.
Avocado Pasta - A change from avocado toast and tossing it in your salad. Here's a handy tip to depit and a chart to determine if its ripe or not.
Coconut Jelly - This recipe is vegetarian and vegan-friendly and using agar-agar powder (a plant-based gelling agent) instead of gelatin. Pour it in your favorite mold for something picture worthy.

Simple and clean: MapleHolistics Review!

With all the makeup applied to complete your Lolita style, it’s also important to take care of your skin after all that social interaction. In my 30s I'm still suffering from breakouts and constantly dreaming of a healthy complexion. As such I’ve made it an initiative to develop a skincare routine and really have been investing in Korean skincare routine. At the time MapleHolistics contacted me to try out their products just when I was ready to try new products for my regime.

Attracted by their natural ingredients and production, I was willing to give them a try!

Grapeseed Oil. Despite having oily skin and still have cystic acne every now and then, the Grapeseed Oil helps during breakouts (despite being oil)! Whenever I felt any developing I would spot apply with the oil. It doesn’t get rid of acne completely but it does keep it in check when it comes to reducing pain and swelling. Although be wary of the amount you apply - for my skin type I tend incorporate it in my nighttime routine when it has a tendency to be drier. Make sure to apply a small layer because it is still oil it can work in reverse ( and could cause potential breakouts). But this would be a product I would definitely continue using.

Degrease Natural Shampoo. I had wanted to try because after using LUSH's Rehab shampoo and hoping it would have a similar effect. It does have a pine-y scent and it does effectively remove any excess oils from the day but had to heavily condition afterwards. Note: My hair was dyed recently so it has been drier than usual and would probably recommend this product for those who keep their hair natural and untreated.

Kira Kira Launch Crate review!

Subscription crates seem to be all the rage right now, but I was never really on board to get a box of stuff that's cute (but I'll never use) or snacks (that I probably wouldn't eat). Overall I hate wasting anything. In November, Japan Crate advertised in a new crate full of makeup and skincare products. I've been into the Korean skincare routine for awhile but I'm afraid of buying a bunch of products and then finding out none of them work and then have it unused for years. Kira Kira Crate does all the work for you - picking a few products for you to try out without too much hassle!

I've gone through about 3/4 using most of the products from their launch crate so I wanted to do a mini review:

PureSmile Cherry Blossom Essence Mask: I'm a big fan of masks so it's nice to have one included in the box every month

NonKuma x Hello Kitty Eye Patch: This works the same way as the eye mask.

Choosy Lip Pack - Peach: Haven't used yet

Naive Peach Face Wash: It lathers up well and leaves your skin very soft and moisturized. Though as a person who has oily skin this was not for me. If you have regular or dry skin it might be better suited.

Eyelashes: Always in need of new lashes so this was a nice item.

Yuzu Bath Tablets: I'm not a bath person, so this may end up as a future gift.

Family Honey Soap: It's soap? But it has a really nice smell of honey that permeates through my bathroom. It doesn't dry out your skin. : )

Hotto Mie Eye Mask: 💖 This was my favorite!! I had recently gotten Lasik and this promised to promote better circulation around my eyes, making it less dry. I tend fall asleep with it but in the morning my eyes were slightly less "I need water NOW" dry. Also I immediately went to Flushing to restock. The only downside is the mask is rather large and if you have a small head you'll have to push it up (or buy ones that cover the entire eye). 💖

PROS:

-You get a good variety of 7 things to try out for $29.

-You can skip crates whenever you want and are only billed for that month.

-They post a few items on their Facebook and Instagram to help you decide if you want that month's crate or skip it.

-Comes with a booklet on what everything is and how to use it.

CONS:

-The crates tend to ship late and take a long time - even after they've sent an email saying it's shipped.

-Personally it takes about a month and a half to finish more than half the products. As such I've personally decided to just get one every other month.

-If you already have a skincare and makeup regime down pat this is probably not for you.

7 Resolutions for the New Year That You Can Really Keep!

Happy 2017! We all make resolutions that we never keep but here are a few that you can apply if you love Lolita and are in it for the long haul:

Closet clean that wardrobe. Having read Mari Kondo's book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, a few months ago I've really gotten motivated. Your styles may have changed over time or you've hung onto items long after realizing which cuts suit you best.
Revamp your wishlist. Whenever you started Lolita or love of designer fashion, you've probably created a wishlist of items to own. It's probably grown since you've started and hasn't really changed, just added on. Now's the time to curate what you really, really want to own!
Budget your income. This is tricky as everyone says they want to do this but never gets around. Start with big stuff (rent/allowance, cellphone, groceries) - these numbers don't change too much and you'll know how much to reserve. Whatever else is extra (if there is leftover) can be devoted to stuff like savings and credit cards. Don't rely on credit cards a lot - it's a slippery slope. Hiding it outside your wallet helps too.
Go solo. Have an adventure in Lolita by yourself. It's scary but it will exhilarate you and really give you a confidence boost.
Treat yourself. Splurge on a meal you would never do every week. A full dinner course (tea, dinner, dessert) at Laduree is a luxury that you should do at least once.
Meditate. Take 10, 20 minutes out of your day or week to meditate. This is a good way to center yourself, clear those anxiety fears, and focus your mind on improving your cute lifestyle. I love using the SimplyYoga app and Sworkit.
Fly away. Go on a group vacation with close friends. Far off Lolita events like a Street Fashion Europe event or Baby, the Stars Shine Bright San Francisco anniversary tea party is a great opportunity to see sights with the people you've really grown to care about! Or start small and go to a convention you've never been before.

We Are X is a fantastic documentary on X Japan, one of the oldest visual kei bands out there. If you're part of that older generation of Lolitas, visual kei was one of the gateways (praise Mana-sama). Whether you are a big fan of J-rock, Yoshiki, X Japan, or just a fan of film documentaries - this is a must see.

The fall weather Monday reminded me I needed a new travel mug and stopped by David's Tea. They also had their fall selection out like Pumpkin Chai, Mocha Latte, and Blueberry Muffin - if you love that "hot kick" from cinnamon hearts candy you will love their Pumpkin Chai tea.

Brunch

Discovered the Alcove, one of my favorite Queens haunts is serving brunch! Speaking of brunch, the Lowery Bar & Kitchen was pretty neat - the Kale omelette was really delish.

It's International Lolita Day tomorrow and while it's mostly about getting together with long lost friends, it's also important to reflect why you love this frilly fashion. Do something different and have fun spending time with yourself too!

It's nice to recharge and reflect why you like this fashion of lace and petticoates; loving it not only because of the friends you've found but how much you've grown as a person overall.

Here are 10 ideas you can do by yourself but can easily do with friends too!

1. Go out visit the museum like the Museum of Art and Design, you'd be amazed how serene walking through galleries alone area.
2. Treat yourself to an expensive meal. Indulge yourself. Or try something new at the Japan Block Fair.
3. Go see a movie you wouldn't normally see by yourself. No one you know will see you cry during When Marnie Was There.
4. Get a summer version of the St. Honore, strawberry and pistachio, at Laduree.
5. Request to sit in a cafe by the window and just people-watch.
6. Be a tourist and check out the World One Observatory.
7. Do some retail therapy at Planet Cute.
8. Book-browsing at the Albertine, a store devoted to French literature (books are in French and English.
9. Buy a dried flower bouquet at the Union Square Farmer's Market.
10. Visit the Hello Kitty Time Capsule.

Planet Cute Pop-Up 6/4 - 6/28

Planet Cute is a one month pop up shop that will open up tomorrow, showcasing local Etsy artists inspired by cute, creepy, and kawaii styles. Find everything from prints, cute flasks, plush toys, jewelry, and more!

On June 5, there's also a grand opening party with wine and cookies from 7-9. It's a great opportunity to support small businesses (and artist)!

Alice: 150 Years of Wonderland at the Morgan Library 6/26 - 10/11

Lewis Carroll's Alice and Wonderland is an inspiration to many movies and archetypes in pop culture. It's also a constant theme and inspiration for Lolita fashion - there are many prints and outfits modeled after the ever curious Alice.

If you've never been to the Morgan Library, it is a museum devoted to art and literature (think lots of first editions). As part of the 150 anniversary of this novel fairytale, the Morgan Library and Museum will house the original manuscript, as well as "an engaging account of the genesis, publication, and enduring appeal of Lewis Carroll's classic tale, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," in their exhibition Alice: 150 Years of Wonderland.

Note: The museum is free from 7-9 on Fridays. Perfect way to start the weekend.

Sebastian Masuda announced last month at his lecture at Japan Society that he will be bringing his Time After Time Capsule project to New York City! This time it's the iconic Hello Kitty (see above). There's going to a big event where you can make your own kawaii memory to put into the capsule.

Eventually this will be part of a bigger project to be showcased at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Currently their holding a Kickstarter to help promote this event - an $80 pledge will get you a ticket to an exclusive VIP event later that night!

Sketch of the Time After Time capsule art project for New York City. Will debut later this year.

Last month, I went see Sebastian Masuda spoke on his artistic journey as well as the history and "real" meaning of Harajuku fashion at Japan Society. Often people who are not familiar with Japanese pop culture think that "Harajuku fashion" is a definitive style of dress, similar to the silhouette of Lolita fashion. Masuda says this is not the case but rather it is more about self-expression - so each person that has been captured in Fruits and Kera is expressing their style than a group style.

He also announced later this year he will be debuting another "time capsule" art project in New York City like he did at Art Basel Miami sometime in May.

Kawaii Meets Art and Fashion: an Evening with Sebastian Masuda 3/25!

Sebastian Masuda returns to New York again to talk about his latest projects like the Time After Time Capsule. The creator behind the everpopular 6%DokiDoki and stage designer behind Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's very kawaii sets, Masuda is above all an artist. Last year he held his first US exhibition, Colorful Rebellion - seventh nightmare in New York, which was a huge success.

Whether you like anime, Japanese fashion, or pop art be sure to attend this event at Japan Society on Wednesday, March 25, 2015. Tickets are $12 ($8 for members). A short reception will be held after where you could even get a chance to talk with Masuda himself.

There will also be a small selection of 6%DokiDoki items for sale as well!
